Discovery Center announces fundraising challenge

Organizers of the Mill Pond Discovery Center’s capital campaign announced a $500,000 challenge grant last week.

Three donors have committed to matching donations through the end of the year, up to a half million dollars.

“Our challenge is the challenge to raise a half million,” explained John Martin, a fundraising consultant for the Inspire … Building a Center of Discovery Campaign. “And there’s a sense of urgency. We have until the end of the year.”

The donors are the Fred.

C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation, which has offered a second gift of $200,000, and two un-named locals who pledged funds to bring the incentive to $500,000.

“Their goal is to broaden the base,” said Martin. “The grant is designed to encourage others in the community to give at all levels. It really is an exciting opportunity for us. For those people who haven’t made a gift but are thinking about it. … It’s a strong message, we’re moving forward.”

If the fundraising goal is reached, the challenge would raise a total of $1 million, bringing the capital campaign within approximately $500,000 of its initial $4 million fundraising goal.

“These challenge grant funds are an absolutely marvelous show of support for this project and an exciting opportunity for people to double the value of their contributions,” said Inspire campaign chair Mark Kravik in a press release announcing the challenge. “We’ve been seeing tremendous support all along for the Discovery Center and now here’s another opportunity for more of us to get involved and show support.

After quilting for 10 years, Lindholm has assembled scraps of fabric leftover from many quilts and sewn them into a new creation for the Mental Health Task Force of Polk County.

The organization plans to hold a raffle for the quilt at its Second Annual “A Summer Night” fundraising event on Thursday, August 24. The event will take place at the Sawmill Pizza and Brew Shed in Clear Lake, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Lindholm’s quilt, like many of her others, was sewn as a gift. She remembers as a young girl waiting to get her first quilt from her grandmother.

“I love to make quilts and give them away,” she said.

“People are always so happy to receive a quilt.”

The quilt will be shown at two community events prior to the August 24 raffle: Music on the Overlook in St. Croix Falls on Friday, August 18 and at Sawmill Pizza and Brew Shed in Clear Lake on Sunday, August 20.

Raffle tickets will also be sold at these viewings.

I

have to admit it, as an industry, newspapers are terrible at promoting their own brand.

We spend so much time carefully crafting the news and working with local merchants to make sure their messages are seen that we often do self-promotion as an afterthought.

It’s one of those mistakes that you have a really good explanation for why it happened. I’ll try.

For well over a century, newspapers of all types and sizes have shouldered the load to make sure our communities keep informed, and by extension, keep running.

Our reporters are often the only Publisher member of the general public who attend many governmental meetTom Stangl ings. Part of what our readers buy with their subscription is our eyes, ears and expertise in distilling the sometime confusing operations of our democracy.

I also think that our readers want as much local news as possible, and if we spend time promoting ourselves we can be seen as self-indulgent or preaching to the choir. The folks who are reading the paper are the ones who get it, right?

I’m not so sure.

Since the last recession (the downturn that had its beginning nearly 10 years ago) the granddaddy of the original fake news stories has been continuing. You know the one, “all newspapers will be gone in 10 years.”

The death of a few prominent metro dailies that had been purchased for far too much, with very little cash down — a lot like real estate was back then — fell on hard times, like everyone else and didn’t have the reserves to weather the storm. They couldn’t cut enough staff to keep making the payments and put out a paper, so they cut their losses and closed the doors.

Well, if the big boys couldn’t make it, how would the little guys like us survive?

We did like we always have done — focused on our communities, schools and local businesses.

The recession was hard on everyone, but look who’s still here.

Little old us, thanks to you. Your continued support as a subscriber or advertiser has kept us in business, just like it did in year one.

So, let’s talk about the front page, which was intentionally left (nearly) blank. The Minnesota Newspaper Association is marking its 150th year, and this “white out” campaign is a subtle marketing ploy to raise awareness of the job we continue to do, week in and week out.

We are so dependable, many think of us as a utility, something that will always be here when we are needed, just like the electric company.

But what if we weren’t here?

Where would you find out about the latest happenings? Where would you get the latest scores?

Where would you find out about the triumphs and tragedies of your friends and neighbors?

Social media? Perhaps. But your uncle is a bit prone to exaggeration… A website or two or three?

Maybe.

Sounds like a lot of screen time to me.

You are holding the ultimate mobile news device in your hands, and it never needs to be recharged.

Well, you do need to renew it once a year or it stops coming to your door.

The bottom line is you are crucial to the continued success of this newspaper. It’s OK to take us for granted, but rest assured that we will never take YOU for granted.

No news could be very bad news

f you saw the front page of the paper this week, you probably noticed the lack of, well, news. The Sun and other papers in the region are taking part in a “whiteout” campaign designed to underscore the importance of newspapers in our communities.

It’s not purely hypothetical. In his column this week, Sun publisher Tom Stangl has done a fine job of highlighting the various roles local newspapers play, from watchdog to community booster. I’d also like to turn your attention to a matter of national significance.

Last week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced renewed efforts to investigate leaks coming from the White House, which may come to Editor punishing the press.

“One of the things we are doing is Suzanne Lindgren reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas,” he said. “We respect the important role that the press plays, and will give them respect, but it is not unlimited.”

Later, Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein qualified that a bit, saying, “We don’t prosecute journalists for doing their jobs. Our goal is to prevent the leaks, so that’s what we’re after here. We haven’t revised the policy with regard to reporters.”

That said, the president has taken a less subtle stance in the past, calling for throwing journalists in jail. And, in fact, he probably wouldn’t need to revise

any policies to do so.

“It’s a common misperception that there is a legal protection (for journalists protecting an anonymous source),” said Dana Gold, director of education and strategic partnerships at the Government Accountability Project in an interview with Bob Garfield of the radio show On the Media. “It’s actually more norm than law.”

In an effort to get to whistleblowers, journalists reporting classified administration have been prosecuted as recently as the Obama Administration. If they refuse to expose their source, they can go to jail.

And they’re worse off if they do. Gold called journalists who don’t protect anonymous sources, “dead in the water as far as having integrity.”

I think most people would agree that exposing the possibility of high-level wrongdoing without putting anyone at risk is different than leaking information that might put others in danger. So far, the leaks that lead to investigations of Russia meddling in the U.S. presidential election seem to have been the former.

Threatening to prosecute journalists in an effort to stop whistleblowers, said Gold, “will have a chilling effect — not just on the journalist but on the sources willing to talk to journalists.”

It could be a different kind of “whiteout” campaign.

Advice for the new pastor How will Reverend Sarah respond to news that the Baptists are shooting turkeys and she’s not invited?

It had been nine days since Rev. Sarah Hyden-Smith made her fi rst appearance in the pulpit of Lennox Valley Methodist Church. Her schedule was fi lled with unpacking boxes, meeting with committees, preparing her fi rst two sermons and other ministerial duties.

Thanks to the surprise remarks from the Albright siblings during her fi rst children’s sermon, along with the large number of folks who had come out to hear the new preacher, Sarah was feeling pretty good about her fi rst two weeks in the valley. Still, Sarah knew that the newness would eventually wear off, and her attention would turn from getting acquainted with her new surroundings toward shepherding her flock at the Methodist Church.

Three weeks before moving to her new appointment, Sarah made a visit to her predecessor, Glynn Vickers, who was retiring after 42 years in the ministry. She was eager to learn all she could about her new congregation and to gain any insights that could help as she prepared for her position.

Being newer to the ministry, Sarah didn’t know much about Rev. Vickers, but soon learned that he would be an invaluable resource. Glynn was an amiable sort, quick-witted and easygoing. Sarah took a quick liking to him.

They mostly talked about her new church. Rev. Vickers had enjoyed his

years there, and Sarah could tell he didn’t want to force information on her. Finally, she asked him if he had any advice for her.

“I’ve been in the ministry a long time,” he began. “I know a lot of pastors spend most of their time in meetings and preparing for sermons.”

Sarah was on the edge of her seat, hoping for any information that would help her be a better pastor to her new flock.

“In my four decades, I’ve found that it all comes down to three things. As long as I did those, people seemed to like me, and congregations grew.”

“He must know what he’s talking about,” Sarah thought. In her research, she had found that the Lennox Valley church had increased in membership and attendance each year since Glynn arrived.

“What are those three things?”

After pausing briefly, Rev. Vickers said, “First, make a personal visit to the home of every new visitor within three days.”

“Three days?” she asked pensively.

“It’s important to get to them quickly. That way they know they’re important to you. Wait any longer, and they’ve probably forgotten they even attended.”

“OK. What else?” asked Sarah.

“Visit all members of the church in their homes at least once each year,” he said, as if it were common knowledge.

“But how do you fi nd time to prepare for sermons if you’re visiting so many people?”

Glynn grinned knowingly, looking

down toward the ground. “People will forget your sermon by dinner time. They will remember when you visited their home for years.

“People come to church,” he continued, “because they want to matter. And when you visit them at home, they feel like they matter. It’s not hard. We have 104 family units in the church. Some live alone, some are families. If you get to two homes each week, you’ve visited everyone.”

Both were quiet for a moment while Sarah digested this new information.

“And what’s the third thing?” asked Sarah.

“Visit every member and their relatives every day while they are in the hospital.”

“But the nearest hospital is in Springfield,” noted Sarah.

Rev. Vickers rubbed his chin, as if to say, “I know. I go there just about every day.” However, no words came from his mouth.

Sarah left their meeting convinced she would heed his advice. So here she was, ten days into her fi rst year as pastor, and it was time to start.

Looking at the visitors list from her fi rst Sunday service, she read, “Juliet Stoughton.”

Quite fortuitously, at that very moment Juliet Stoughton was planning her march to protest the upcoming men’s breakfast and turkey shoot at First Baptist Church. Reverend Hyden-Smith’s fi rst visit should be quite interesting.

The Polk County Fair Park in St Croix Falls has many historic buildings in danger of being destroyed by the Polk County Fair Society and the Polk County Board.

We must act now to stop this wanton destruction of our history on the 1886 fairgrounds. They are our buildings, owned by us, the residents or taxpayers of the county. The two boards appear to be moving rapidly to begin the process with the 1909 grandstand destruction, but this is but the tip of the iceberg. Motivated

by visions of newness, pushed by a campaign of misinformation and aided by intentional neglect, we are in grave danger of losing at least three more buildings in the near future.

The historic 1909 grandstand is the first in line, but the 1850s Red School House, the flower building, and the dance pavilion are next, with the idea floated about of moving in a pole shed instead.

The next county board meeting, Aug 15, 6 p.m., considers a resolution to fund an engineering study of the grandstand that would actually find out the condition and cost of repair to continue using the oldest grand-

stand in the whole Midwest.

Perfect Cat Diego made all the right moves and found his home with a young woman in need of his feline finesse. Chocolate Lab mix Patrick met a young family of four and went home the very next day. He was excited to complete their new home by taking up squirrel chasing chores and providing doggie kiss-

es. The only thing Tiny Scott ever wanted in a home was a lap to rest in and that’s just what he got. Scottie found a gentleman in need of a lap-potato. They were both thrilled to find each other.

Kittens in all the colors of the feline spectrum have made their debut in the adoptable cat room. Red Dachshund Sandy and Corgi Mix Dickens make a great couple. She is exuberant, playful and a tad big dominant while Dickens is reserved and submissive. Dickens lets her have all the toys and that’s just the way she likes it. Sandy, by example, gives Dickens the confidence to enjoy life (and the wading pool). They make the perfect couple and it would be a match made in heaven if they could go home together. Both are shy with strangers but quickly learn to trust with love and care.

The Light in the Darkness…Reflecting on the events of Charlottesville, VA.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness will not overcome it” - John 1:5 …And the darkness will not overcome.

I repeat these words over and over and over this day as I reflect on the past and current events of Charlottesville, Virginia… …And the darkness will not overcome.

The image of a terrified child being comforted while white supremacists surrounded a church and prevented people inside from leaving. …And the darkness will not overcome.

Fear. Hatred. Racism. White Supremacy. Neo-Nazi’s. Darkness. …And the darkness will not overcome.

We must name this what it is, which is Evil. Evil acts against children of God. Who are created and who are loved. Who have been named and claimed and created to be beautiful. …And the darkness will not overcome.

But I am not without blame. Have I done enough?

Has fear prevented me from taking action and standing up for what is right? Standing up for my brothers and sisters in Christ regardless of ethnicity, culture, background, color, age or ability?? The time for action is now. The time to stand against evil is today. ….And the darkness will not overcome.

Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) …And the darkness will not overcome.

The sin has been named. Conversations are happening. Barriers are breaking. Prayers are surrounding. God’s love is transforming. …And the darkness will not overcome.

Because Love Wins. Because Christ Wins. Because this is the promise of God. ….And the Darkness will NOT overcome.

Richard Chester Bierbrauer of Osceola died Aug. 5, 2017. at the St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls. He was 85.

Richard was born Aug. 118, 1931, at their farm on tthe Polk/St. Croix County L Line to Chester and Myrtle ((Rosenow) Bierbrauer. He w was the oldest of nine child dren. Richard was baptized a and confirmed at Zion Luttheran Church. He attended O Oak Lawn School in Farmiington, grades 1-4. He then rrode the bus to Osceola for g grades 5-8. Richard starte ed his freshman year but h his dad said he was needed o on the farm. He worked on the farm and became in charge when his dad went to work for the Railroad.

On May 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to Iris Engelhardt at Zion Lutheran Church. This marriage was blessed with three children, Sharon, Randy and Shelly.

During his employment years he worked at Maple Island in Stillwater, 7up Bottling Company in Somerset, Ralstad Purina in Hager City, Minn., and Ulrich Insemination in New Richmond. During his free time he roasted pigs and turkeys for various celebrations.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Myrtle Bierbrauer; and siblings, Paul and Barb.

Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Iris; children, Sharon (Dennis) Potting, Randy and Shelly; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Grace (Al) Conklin, Iris Bierbrauer, Carol Bierbrauer, Glenn (Judy) Bierbrauer, Chet (Kathy) Bierbrauer, Judy (Ron) Chlebeck; sister-in-law, Marjorie Bierbrauer, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Farmington.

Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery, East Farmington.

Edward L. Adams of Amery, formerly of Dresser, died Aug. 12, 2017, at Golden Age Manor in Amery. He was 86.

Edward was born Dec. 14, 11930, in Hinckley, Minn., tto parents Peter and Hilda ((Berdan) Adams.

Edward was employed as a pipefitter at Honeywell where he worked for many w years before retiring. He y lloved playing his fiddle as well as working in his shop w fixing cars, welding things and just spending time tina kering. k He married Janet Ashwill on June 7, 1958, at the w Church of Incarnation in C Minneapolis. He and Janet enjoyed traveling around the country and to Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Henry.

Edward is survived by his wife Janet; children, Thomas Adams of St. Croix Falls, Andrea (Gerald) Matzelle of Lake Mills, Carla Vossen of St. Croix Falls and Michael Adams. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Alanna and Adam Vossen and Joseph and Jacob Matzelle.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Aug. 16 at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Osceola. Interment will be held in the Sand Lake cemetery, Dresser.

The village of Osceola approved a plan last week to increase the water rates by 3 percent. The change will go into effect October 1.

The rate adjustment will be the first since 2003. Since then, according to Village Administrator Joel West, inflation has risen by approximately 34 percent.

“Increasing those is not something we take lightly,” said Village President Gary Beckmann. “It’s been 14 years, so we’ve certainly held off as long as we could. We’ve been assessing this for a couple years. … And now we’re in the position where we have to.”

The change will not affect the sewer rates in Dresser, as sewer and water are billed separately.

Village staff is also looking into setting rates for the long term, which would make future increases more predictable.

Site work at Fourth and Kent The board approved the first payment of $126,622 for road and utility work on Fourth Avenue

and Kent Street. Utility work is complete, according to village engineer Angela Popenhagen, and the roads now have gravel bases.

Construction crews planned to have curbs in by the end of last week and hope to pave this week, she reported.

Old hospital site The village is working with investors who are interested in re-developing the former hospital in downtown Osceola. According to Administrator West, the plan commission has reviewed options to rezone the site as either R-3 residential or a planned unit development (PUD). PUD zoning would give the village more control over the scale and density of the project, but the current code only allows PUDs on properties that are 10 acres or larger. The plan commission is in the process of reviewing a draft of an amendment that would allow PUDs on properties of at least two acres in already-developed areas. The former hospital property is 4.2 acres.

Driveway-paving swindlers making the rounds

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that a travelling paving company has targeted at least one Polk County couple this month. Sheriff Pete Johnson is advising residents use caution when dealing with companies going door to door, and

issued a report of an incident earlier this month.

On August 2, a paving company called “MVP” approached an elderly couple in their driveway in northwestern Polk County. According to the report, the leader of the group talked the couple into paving their driveway. The company reportedly did a low-qual-

ity job and charged the couple $8,690.

According to the sheriff’s office, “The group is very aggressive and through intimidation and trickery talked the elderly couple into writing two checks for almost twice the originally stated price.”

In this case, the bank noticed the abnormality

and eventually cancelled the checks. But the couple is being harassed to pay, according to the sheriff’s office. The leader of the group is reportedly driving a new-looking black Ford pickup, single cab, dualie. The other vehicles are a large blue or purple dump truck and SEE SWINDLERS, PAGE 7

Osceola family devastated after ďŹ re

An Osceola family was stunned and distressed Friday after a fire ravaged their Summit Street home the evening before. The fire started in the attached garage and spread to the house through a doorway, filling the home with

smoke and giving the family mere seconds to evacuate.

According to a resident on the scene Thursday, they tried to gather their pets as they hurried to leave the house. The family made it out alive but lost one pet, a cat.

Witnesses on the scene reported that the response from Osceola Fire and Rescue was excellent and

very professional.

The family said word of the fire had spread quickly through town and that others in the community, including strangers, were offering condolences.

They declined having their names published or a photograph taken of the house.

Osceola man, Hudson daughter drown in Lake Superior A man from Osceola and his daughter, from Hudson, died Thursday after they went missing while swimming in Lake Superior.

According to reports, emergency responders were called to Duluthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park Point at about 4:20 p.m. to rescue two swimmers in distress. The Duluth Fire Department reported that waves

were five to seven feet high near shore. After an hour of searching, they found the girl. They found the man about 40 minutes later.

The Duluth Fire Department reported that neither of the swimmers had a pulse when they were pulled from the water. Rescuers administered CPR and brought the swimmers to a hos-

pital. Eventually, both the man and girl, whose names were initially withheld, were reported to have died. The man was later identified as Ryan Paul Fuglie, 38 years old. His daughter, 10-year-old Lily Elizabeth Fuglie, lived in Hudson.

A Duluth firefighter was also taken to the hospital after helping

return the man to shore.

The Duluth Fire Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rescue boat overturned in the waves, but no deaths were reported among the firefighters.

A rip current warning was in effect Thursday and into Friday morning, and public beaches at Park Point were closed.

Cedar Lake alum treatment is underway

Cedar Lake is looking clearer after the first of five aluminum sulfate treatments. The change comes after years of overabundant algae in the lake.

From June 12 to June 28, the Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District contracted HAB Aquatic Solutions to deposit the first dose of alum into Cedar Lake.

The process will be repeated every three years for the next 15 years to decrease phosphorus levels.

Phosphorus is the primary nutrient leading to algae blooms in Cedar Lake, according to the 2014 Cedar Lake Management Plan. Phosphorus runoff is caused in part by the removal of trees for agriculture in the 1880s, followed by tiling the land and using fertilizer for crops, which allowed nutrients to run into the lake for decades. Today, farmers in the Horse Creek Watershed (flowing to Cedar Lake) use better management practices to keep fertilizer out of the lake. These efforts have stopped the increase of phosphorus levels in

the lake and will hopefully help maintain a healthy blossom of algae after all treatments are deposited.

After a three-year study of Cedar Lake and its watershed, the Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District Board observed that up to 90 percent of the phosphorus in Cedar Lake can be decreased with the application of alum.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, aluminum sulfate is a nontoxic compound often used to clarify drinking water. After it makes contact with water, the alum forms an aluminum hydroxide precipitate â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a chalky white â&#x20AC;&#x153;flocâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and bonds with the phosphorus, becoming an aluminum phosphate compound as it sinks slowly to the bottom of the lake. This treatment should improve water quality by depriving algae of its primary food source.

The alum treatment

was delivered by tanker trucks and stored in a series of tanks at 10th Avenue and at the north landing. The barge contains a sequence of tube fed nozzles and injects the treatment roughly a foot below the surface of the water. The treatment then descends to the bottom of the lake slowly at 8 feet each 20 minutes.

The appropriate dosage is precisely measured to contest the amount of phosphorus in the lake.

To ensure the lake is reacting to the treatment properly, the water will be monitored to protect the water quality. This is done by retrieving a sample of water from the lake each day to check the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pH level. Sediment samples will be regularly extracted and examined at UW-Stout.

So far the treatment seems to be working, reported Joe Demulling, a Polk County Board member who sits on the Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board.

The alum treatment is estimated to cost $2.5 million over the next 15 years, according to the July 2017 Cedar Lake Management Plan. Seventy percent of the 2017 treatment was provided

by WDNR grants. These grants as well as donated laboratory costs from UW-Stout will support the routine monitoring of lake water and sediments from 2017-2019.

Lake residents will pay the remaining costs of the alum treatment through a special assessment that establishes parcel assessment classes based on benefits to each parcel including size and proximity to the lake. Since the next SEE LAKE, PAGE 10

Braves fall in first round

The Braves fell 8-5 to the La Crescent Cardinals during the first round of the WBA playoffs in Hallie last Friday night.

Osceola jumped out to a quick 4-0 in the first inning thanks to three walks, a couple of errors and hits by Blake Berger and Matt Hasselquist.

Unfortunately, Osceola was able to score only one more run in the game, which came in the fourth inning via a Dave Measner RBI single.

The Cardinals chipped away at the Braves’ lead by scoring twice in the third inning and then tying the game up in the sixth with three hits and a couple of walks.

La Crescent added three more hits in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. The Braves used three pitchers in the game: Ethan Freese, Noah Berger and Tyler Lueck.

After defeating the Braves Friday, La Crescent fell to Brill 10-9 during the second round of the playoffs Sunday.

Other St. Croix Valley League teams also had troubles during the opening rounds of the playoffs. Hudson fell 9-4 in 10 innings to Everest. River Falls surrendered a large ninth inning lead to Sparta and lost 9-8. Plum City lost to Spooner 8-7.

mouths. Returning with a crop full of food every nestling will get some food each time the adults arrive at the nest. I let all the big thistles grow along my fence lines and grassy edges as well as let some weeds survive despite allergies that hit this household every autumn.

It’s the female that chooses the nest site, usually along stretches where thick and open cover meet. The nest will be made of thistle down and milkweed fibers in a tree or shrub either just above ground or to the height of an NFL crossbar. Sometimes the nests will be made among thick thistle patches, a perfect finch designed home. Look at any famous Owen Gromme paintings if you don’t know what I mean.

Luckily my finches don’t like my vegetable crops, nor do they like apples. I just harvested my very first fall crop. Gravenstein, the first apple to ripen in North America, has produced a decent first harvest.

Friends’ book sales on hiatus The decision was difficult and bittersweet. After much discussion at their June meeting, the Friends of Osceola Public Library, Inc., opted to suspend their semi-annual book sales until the new library is built.

Not only are the book sales the major fundraiser for the organization whose mission is to support the library, area residents look forward to the sales each June and September. “I love browsing the wide variety of books. I buy enough to keep me reading until the next sale,” said one regular customer.

While evaluating the June sale held during Rhubarb Days, chairperson Jolene Pederson explained that the logistics of inventory storage and sale site made planning for

the September sale problematic.

“The free storage space in RCU’s lower level was perfect for us. Plus, having the sale in their east parking lot couldn’t have been better.

Both were such a gift and made managing that part of our sale preparations so much easier.”

Since the village offices moved into RCU’s lower level, that storage space is no longer available.

The Friends will have a dedicated room in the new library.

The plan is to have regular sales throughout the year, not just during the traditional Rhubarb Days and Community Fair/ Wheels and Wings events. They anticipate that the receipts from regular sales will compensate for funds lost during this hiatus. “We trust that when people have regu-

lar access to our used books, our financial support of the library will be as robust as ever,” said Barb Wetzel, Friends member.

Even though the Friends aren’t accepting donations, Osceola Public Library is because the library adds some donated items to its collection. As always, some items are not accepted: textbooks, encyclopedias, VHS, and magazines.

Non-fiction books should have a current copyright and all donations must be in good condition.

Donors should check with library staff before leaving any materials.

These donations will help stock the shelves in the library lobby.

Park will be named to honor Deputy Seversen

The Overlook Park in St. Croix Falls will be renamed later this month in honor of former county deputy Michael Seversen.

Seversen was shot in the line of duty in April 1991. He survived, but the bullet injured his spine. He

lived the rest of his life as a quadriplegic, remaining active with the Polk County Sheriff’s Department.

Seversen died in April 2014.

In September 2015 the St. Croix Falls City Council approved naming the overlook park in the deputy’s honor. August 25 that promise will come to fruition when the park is officially re-named Deputy

In Amery Ron Branster recently demonstrated how mounting waves of illegal aliens are reducing the incomes of everyday workers. He countered the notion that non-Americans were taking the jobs Americans would not do; Mr. Branster submitted that Americans dislike working for reduced wages when they once received wages for that same work.

There are two high-sounding congressional resolutions condemning ‘hate speech.’ These are House Resolution 257 and Senate Resolution 118. They do not have the effect of law; however, like the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, they can be destructive. The Devil is in the details. The Resolutions’ encouragement to investigate sets up possible harassments of free speech.

Most scorn an actor on stage carrying around a bloody head that mimics our president, but doing so is his/her right. Seeing protestors costumed in female private parts is vulgar, but it is their right of expression. Nobody forces us to watch or to listen.

Those who oppose illegal immigration seldom meet reasoned disagreement. Instead, they get put-downs with names like xenophobe, bigot, and Islamophobe.

This helps those wanting either cheap labor or the downgrading of Western culture to set up controls on ‘hate speech.’ Terrorism thrives on fear; however, the open exchange of ideas drives out fear.

Who benefits from amnesty and illegal/legal immigration? The Establishment list includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (not our local ones) for cut-rate labor and the Democratic Party for votes. It is a wonder why labor unions and minority interests mount few objections; both lose bigtime from limitless immigration.

‘These are not our values’ goes the claim of those wanting amnesty for illegal aliens. Many who charge this rarely state exactly what these values are. They resist seeing our Western values as superior to places where these occur: females have few rights, countries permit slavery, 200 million cases of female genital mutilation occur, economies rot away, or Sharia law represses hard-won freedom. Whenever the Third World adopts American free markets and human rights, they gain benefits.

Cumberland man sentenced on child pornography charges

A 64-year-old Cumberland man, Charles P. Knapp has been sent tenced in B a r r o n C o u n t y C Court after pleading g guilty to o one count o of possesKnapp sion of child pornography earlier this spring.

During the August 4 sentencing, Judge Roderick Cameron ordered that Knapp spend the next three years in prison.

Barron County investigators were alerted to Knapp’s illegal file sharing activity on two separate occasions, once by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in July of 2016, and later again in November of 2016 by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ).

After the November notification, authorities served a search warrant at the Cumberland residence of Charles and Debbie Knapp, where forensic examiners recovered eight images of suspected child pornography. Knapp admitted to uploading and sharing images of what he considered to be child pornography.

According to the criminal complaint Knapp had been using an anonymous, disposable chat service to communicate and share files with other users.

Knapp’s original story to investigators was that he needed the child pornography to trade for images of cross dressers, which are the images he was really looking for.

During the course of the investigation, Knapp admitted to downloading an estimated 20 to 30 pornographic images of children.

Knapp was remanded to the custody of Dodge Correctional Facility in Waupun. Once released he faces an additional three years of extended supervision and mandatory sex offender registration for life.

Turtle Lake man allegedly violates bond with fifth OWI

Authorities pulled over Donald R. Duclon, 48 of Turtle Lake shortly after 3:30 p.m. near Milltown for having a revoked driver’s license.

The officer reported Duclon’s eyes to be bloodshot and glossy during the stop, but Duclon denied having had anything to drink that day, and seemed surprised that he didn’t have a valid license.

Conditions of Duclon’s release included that he not operate without a valid license and not to possess or consume alcohol.

Preliminary breath tests conducted at the scene registered .10 blood alcohol content.

Duclon was charged August 4 in Polk County with OWI 5, operating while revoked, and three additional counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.

About the crime stories

The crime stories on this page are based on the probable cause reports from different law enforcement agencies.

Probable cause reports (PCs) are simply a report stating the “probable cause” that the arresting officer had at the time of arrest. Being a neophyte apple grower, I just planted apples I liked five years ago figuring apples would just magically appear on their own. But after rabbits girdled three trees that died right when they would have delivered fruit, things continued to go downhill.

I learned about scab, rot, blotch,

blight, mold, spot and insects. I then found my county UW-Extension horticulture agent and got educated about the timeliness of spraying apples. After a few pies and crisps I think I am beginning to learn a few things at age 66.

I’ve noticed the hummingbird population has doubled. My sugar water feeders, late blooming lilies and hanging baskets are drawing a lot of attention. If you watch hummers enough you will notice that they have “little man

syndrome” like many small dogs and a few short guys I went to high school with. They will duel over sugar water feeders with other hummers, people, or annoying bees that get in their way at lunchtime.

Relishing Wisconsin Fish Frys

f Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes, then Wisconsin is known as the land of 10,000 Friday Fish Frys.

Last Friday, when we were camping in northern Wisconsin, we were hungry for a fish fry. We figured we would find one close to our campsite. We drove past four restaurants advertising fish frys on a 10-mile stretch of road and randomly picked the tiny Pla-Mor Bar and Restaurant in Cable, WIs. We lucked out. It wasn’t that the fish was better than some of the Wild Chow other fish frys we’ve been to, it was also the simple relish tray that acLisa Erickson companied it and the restaurant’s vibe.

Each restaurant finds a way to make their fish fry stand out from the rest.

As we walked into the restaurant, we noticed big beautiful relish trays at almost every table. People were laughing and the wait staff made us feel like part of the family. When I asked the waitress about the relish trays, she asked if we were going to order the fish. We said yes, and a relish tray appeared at our table a couple seconds later.

The tray was loaded! It could have been our meal.

There were two different delicious pasta salads, a cold pickled bean salad, cold pack cheddar cheese spread, carrots, radishes and scallions. Plus, it came with a huge basket of bread sticks and crackers.

The meal was memorable and I can’t wait to try another fish fry—anywhere in Wisconsin!

If you can’t find a Wisconsin fish fry near you or if you’re like me you want fish on Wednesday or a Tuesday, you can whip up this simple recipe for fried fish—don’t forget to serve it with a loaded relish tray!

Wisconsin Beer Battered Fish Serves 4 Adapted from Food.com

1 cup flour ¾ tsp. seasoned salt (I like Lawry’s) ½ tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. onion powder 1 cup Wisconsin beer (I like Spotted Cow) ¼ cup water ¼ cup cornstarch 1-2 lbs. fish, (any fish will do, but white fish will hold together better, like cod or haddock) washed and dried with a paper towel.

2-3 cups frying oil

Heat oil in a large heavy pot to a depth of at least 2 inches.

In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, garlic, and onion powder. Add the beer and water slowly and whisk until smooth; set aside.

When oil reaches a temperature of 350 degrees, dust each fish filet with cornstarch and dip into the batter. Allow some of the excess batter to drip off.

Fry in batches. Do not overload or the temperature will get too low and the batter will come off the fish and the fish will be soaked with oil. Turn fish occasionally; cook for about 5-6 minutes. Filets will be golden brown. Repeat until all fish are fried. Serve with tarter sauce.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE VILLAGE OF DRESSER The Village of Dresser is seeking applications for TWO FULL TIME PUBLIC WORKS POSITIONS. The position performs repair and maintenance related to Village streets, public works, water, and sanitary sewer utilities. Ideal candidates must possess strong communication skills, knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the repair and maintenance of streets, sanitary and storm sewers, ditches, sidewalks, trees, and an aptitude to learn. The applicant must be able to interact with the public in a professional and positive way and be a problem solver. A working knowledge of water and sewer utility functions and a proficiency in the operation and use of computers and software such as Word, Excel and email are required. Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude also desired. Snowplowing experience and the physical ability to sustain long workdays required. On call every other weekend and to be able to work in the outdoors in cold, hot or inclement weather. The position is classified as emergency personnel and must have the ability to respond to emergencies after hours and on weekends. Employee is required to reside or establish residency within 15 miles of Village limits.

Additional requirements include high school diploma or GED. Experience in a municipal public works department or public works construction experience in the position of equipment operator or laborer desirable.

Within (2) years of hire, must obtain Municipal Water Supply Groundwater and Distribution Operator Certification. Applicants must possess a valid Wisconsin Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement or must obtain within 90 days of hire. Wage range: DOQ. Benefit Package to include: Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, PTO, Paid Holidays, State of WI Retirement.

Amery Free Press celebrates 125 years The public is invited to celebrate 125 years of Amery Free Press providing the community with local news. The newspaper is hosting an open house, serving refreshments from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 18, at its office at 215 Keller Avenue.

The newspaper is owned by Sentinel Publications and previously had a series of owners until 1942 when it was taken over by Palmer Sondreal of Amery. The Sondreal family owned and published the paper for 71 years, a notable run in

ownership. Jerry and Steve sold it in 2012.

The physical location changed many times over the years, but has been at 215 Keller Ave. since 1972.

Late blight is a destructive disease of tomatoes and potatoes, and it has recently been confirmed in Pierce County. The disease is caused by a fungus-like water mold called Phytophthora infestans., which is the same organism that caused the great Irish potato famine

in the mid 1800s. It starts with pale green or olive green spots on leaves that quickly enlarge to become brown-black, water-soaked and oily looking areas. A white cottony mold can also form on affected leaves and stems. Tomato fruits develop large, often sunken, light to chocolate-brown, firm spots, sometimes with distinct rings, followed by rotting. Potato tubers with late blight develop reddish-brown discoloration under the skin, which may become sunken.

Entire plants can collapse and die from late blight in 7 to 10 days if weather conditions are favorable. The patch will

start to smell as plants and fruits break down.

The spores usually blow into an area by wind, or can be brought in on infected plants. It does not over winter in the soil, but can survive on plant material that remains alive over winter, such as seeds or potato tubers that are missed during harvest.

Plants that get late blight cannot be saved and should be removed and disposed of immediately to limit spread to other plants. You can pull entire plants, place them in plastic bags and leave the bags in the sun for several days to make sure the plants and the disease are totally killed, then

place the bag in trash for pickup. Do NOT place the plants or any affected fruits on your compost pile Healthy-looking fruits from affected plants are safe to eat or preserve, but if the tomato fruits or potato tubers show any symptoms, they should not be used.

To avoid problems in the future, be sure to dispose of any volunteer tomato or potato plants that sprout next year, as well as any nightshade weeds in the area. Do not use tubers from this year’s potato crop as seed potatoes, but instead purchase certified seed potatoes from a reputable supplier each year. Consider planting tomato varieties that show resistance to late blight, such as ‘Better Boy’, Golden Sweet’, ‘Green Zebra’, ‘Juliet’, ‘Roma’, ‘Sun Sugar’ and ‘Wisconsin 55’.

Fungicides can also be used to reduce late blight, but in most cases, fungicides are preventative, not curative, so they must be applied prior to the onset of the disease. If weather is dry and hot, conditions are not favorable to late blight so fungicides are most likely to be useful during periods of wet, cool weather. Be sure to follow all label instructions if you choose to use a fungicide.
