Lessons of discipline and useful work live on in Sea Cadet Corps BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@OSCEOLASUN.COM

“Fall in,” calls a teenage girl outfitted in blue fatigues. It’s mid-morning, day eight of a 10-day training with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Thirty-five youth have come from across Wisconsin and Minnesota to attend the development program – one of many across the nation – held at the Associated Retreat Center (ARC) in Osceola. The girl’s cohorts begin ambling over, a bit too slowly for Lieutenant Jr. Grade Renae Bowers-Carnahan, who happens to be passing by. “You have an order to fall in,” Bowers-Carnahan calls curtly. “That means move! Don’t dawdle. Move smartly.” The kids straighten their posture and pick up their pace. Bowers-Carnahan turns and continues on her way. Fifty paces further, two cadets bend over a map they’re creating to scale for an obstacle course. Beyond them, a crew of teens installs a vent fan over the ARC’s outdoor barbecue pit. With a large field of would-be candidates, the August 9 Partisan Primary election will narrow the field within each party, thereby placing one candidate from each ticket on the November 8 ballot. In Polk County, only Republican and Democratic voters will have decisions to make. And many races within those tickets have already been narrowed to one candidate each. Polk County voters will weigh in on the following decisions: Republican Party Republican voters must decide between Sean Duffy and Donald Raihala to run for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. Polk County Republicans will also choose between Polk County Clerk candidates Sharon E. Jorgenson, Deanna Boettcher, and Michele Gullickson. Democratic Party Democratic voters must decide between Mary Hoeft and Joel Lewis to run for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. They’ll also choose between Russ Feingold and Scott Harbach for U.S. Senator, the winner of which will face

joins the mapmakers for a few minutes, then heads into a nearby building. The shop is empty at first, as Bowers-Carnahan explains that this is where the cadets are learning to assemble SeaPerch, remotely operated underwater vehicles. They make them from scratch, doing everything from cutting pipes

to assembling the electrical control box. “They start with a box of parts and learn to solder,” says Carnahan. “They finish with a completed controller. It takes a bit of time, but develops a lot of skill.” Development is what the program is all about, according to Kevin Dunaway, commander of the Osceola training contin-

gent. “We strive to develop confidence and leadership skills,” explains Dunaway, a retired Marine and active Lieutenant Jr. Grade in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Classes include everything from basic military drills and courtesies (salutes, saying

Four oars and a sail: Couple journeys to Florida BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@OSCEOLASUN.COM

It started as a conversation over coffee in Florida. Kyle Hawkins, a St. Croix Valley transplant, and Danielle Kreusch, a native of Salt Lake City, were living aboard a boat near St. Petersburg. The lifestyle suited them, but they craved a new adventure – and a slower pace. “We’d been working and working and I’d just graduated,” explained Kreusch, who is now 24. “To finish (needed repairs on the boat they live on), we would have had to keep working for two years. We didn’t want to do that. So we decided to downsize a bit and go on a smaller, inland journey. That’s where the idea came from.” The pair dreamed up a waterborne voyage from St. Croix Falls, where Hawkins’ parents live, back home to Florida. They’d make their way down the St. Croix River, and continue along the Mississippi, hanging a left in LouSUBMITTED
