Area manufacturers and skilled tradespeople gathered last week at the site of the future Discovery Center Fab Lab and Workforce Development Center for a hard hat luncheon hosted by the Inspire…Building a Center of Discovery fundraising campaign.

Speaker Mark Tyler spoke about fabrication laboratories as a local resource for training the next generation of manufacturers. Tyler is president of OEM Fabricators, Inc., chair of the Governor’s Council on Workforce Investment, president of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board and a regent for the University of Wisconsin.

He encouraged manufacturing companies to get involved with high school apprenticeship programs.

“Fab labs are the ideal venue for connecting employers with students and educators. They take the discussions and discovery out of the academic setting and put them in real world situations. This is where students get excited about opportunities that are close to home,” said Tyler.

The Dresser and St. Croix Falls Area Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post # 4186, and the Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day Service to honor all veterans of the community who have given their lives for our country. Danielson earns second straight trip to U.S. Women’s Open

Although she grew up on golf courses in Wisconsin and played collegiate golf at Stanford University, Casey Danielson seems to enjoy the comforts, and successes, of playing in Minnesota.

In 2016 Danielson posted a round of even par 72 at Forest Hills Golf Club to earn a spot in her seventh consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. A year ago, during her first event as a professional, Danielson carded a 2-under par 142 at the Legends Club to qualify for her first U.S. Women’s Open.

The trend continued Monday at Stillwater Country Club as Danielson fired rounds of 73 and 68, respectively, to earn her second straight trip to the U.S. Women’s Open by claiming medalist honors at 3-under par 141.

“I knew I was hitting it really well and felt good about my game. I knew if I could get it together that I could make some birdies,” Danielson said of her mindset entering the second round Monday, May 14. “I was pretty excited to go out and play. I feel comfortable on this course and hoped to go out and make some birdies, but play very consistent.”

A native of Osceola, Danielson played the front nine of the morning round at 1-over par before trading a birdie with a bogey over the final nine to post an early round of 73.

Danielson rolled in a 25-footer for birdie on the second hole during the afternoon round before tapping in a short birdie at the seventh to move into red figures. Blasting

a 7-iron to 15 feet at the par-4 ninth, Danielson converted her birdie chance to turn at 3-under for the round.

“I was playing really solid, so if the putts fall, they fall, and if not, just keep it steady and that’s all you can do,” Danielson said. “Then I birdied ten and then it started raining. The mindset changes a little bit—you’ve got a lot more to worry about and there are some tough holes out there that get a little longer.

“I made two good upand-downs for par and just a lot of two-putts. I felt really comfortable and positive and excited to be out there, which is not easy being a 36-hole day.”

In December Danielson earned her status on the Ladies European Tour by winning Lalla Aicha Tour School in Morocco to claim her card for the 2018 season. Playing in four co-sanctioned events in Australia, Danielson notched three top-15 finishes, including runner-up at the Women’s NSW Open, climbing to 14th on the LET Order of Merit and launched her as a front-runner for Rookie of the Year honors.

“This will be my second [U.S. Women’s Open] and both I’ve played as a pro and I think I’ve gained some experience from last year, as well as playing on the European tour.”

Danielson said her goal is to ultimately play professionally in the United States, but she’s enjoying her time playing across the globe. She will compete in a Symetra Tour event in Michigan shortly after the U.S. Women’s Open before competing

At the national championship at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., last July, Danielson carded an opening-round 76 before coming back with a round of 73, but would miss the weekend cut by three strokes.

Twenty-one-year-old Spaniard Celia Barquin Arozamena didn’t quite match her career-best round of 65, but she did set a new course record at Stillwater Country Club.

Firing a 6-under par 66, she tied briefly for second with Emma Albrecht at even par 144 before carding a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim the final qualifying spot for the national championship later this month.

USGA event after wrapping up her senior season at Iowa State University last week, Arozamena couldn’t put into words what qualifying for the biggest tournament in the U.S. equates to.

“I don’t know—I was just excited there was a tournament in Minneapolis,” Arozamena laughed, “I still have to process it.”

Maya has long hair, soft grey with tan highlights.

She proudly wears a fluffy tuxedo bib and white gloves to the elbow. Maya has a soft personality to match her coat. Maya takes time to smell the roses; she is agreeable and easy going.

Maya came to the shelter as a stray in March and delivered six kittens here, which have been adopted and she iss now waiting for her turn turn. She is a young mother, just one year old. Maya will fit in most anywhere she goes. She loves attention and would be good with children.

Two litters of kittens have been born and adopted. A room full of beautiful adult cats is available and waiting for you. In addition to Maya, another mother to six kittens is Minna. She loves the attention and will sit quietly by your side on the couch. Minna has a short Diluted Calico coat with gorgeous markings. She is a honey.

Ms. Gracie has a cherubic silhouette with a soft Blue Tabby coat of short hair and cherubic is a nice way of saying she is plump.

Gracie is nine years old. She was surrendered to the shelter when her caregivers were moving. If you are looking for a sweet cat to spend quiet afternoons with, Gracie is for you. She puts the cat in cat nap but is ready to enjoy a sitcom or two in the evening.

Over the past few weeks, Arnell has been lucky enough to be the recipient of much needed supplies from WITC students and a birthday party celebration. These donations help us keep the shelter clean and pets pampered and fed. We remain in need of

a few supplies. If you are able to add them to your shopping cart for the animals, it would be greatly appreciated. Supplies in need: liquid all-purpose cleaner like Lysol or Mr. Clean, Purina Cat Chow, (Purina only please, to keep our cats on a steady diet) dog biscuits (all sizes) and hot dogs. The hot dogs are very handy to have in house. We use them to train the dogs and mask medications. The dogs aren’t picky; any brand will do. The gift of supplies is a big help to us.

The Arnell Garage Sale is Saturday, June 9, only two weeks away. We started taking donations on May 1 and are now in full swing Marking Mode. The Shelter Garage Sale is great way to support the shelter with stuff you thought you needed and didn’t use, stuff you used and loved but no longer need, stuff that is cluttering the garage or closets. All of your unwanted Stuff will find a new home through our sale and help Arnell care for animals in need.

Please donate household goods, garden tools, furniture, knickknacks and beyond. Our sale has something for everyone but does not include clothing. Alder he celebrations around graduations are underway with families and friends gathering to mark this milestone in the lives of our children. In homes, garages and church halls photo albums are on display, videos are being played and a buffet of food including lots of cake, mixed nuts, homemade mints in school colors and food that the family will be consuming for a few days are being offered for guests who have come to mark the special occasion.

The Class of 2018 is also receiving awards, accolades and scholarships as this stage of their lives Publisher is coming to an end. A new adventure is waiting just around the Tom Stangl corner, but it’s fitting and proper that we pause for a short time, look around and enjoy the celebration before diving into the unknown. Besides, it’s always better to start a new undertaking on a full stomach.

I attend the Senior Awards Night each year in Amery. The Free Press gives a $500 scholarship, funded by proceeds from the Spring Show. It’s quite an evening as graduating seniors receive recognition for their accomplishments as well as some money for the next stage of their lives.

Each scholarship given at every high school in the nation has a story. A group or organization and individuals have decided that it would be a good use of their money to make an investment in the future of others. For some this is a very personal remembrance of a loved one. The act of providing this helps keep the memory and the essence of the loved one alive. By being able to recognize and encourage the best characteristics of people who have gone on before us, we not only keep their memories alive but also make the world a little bit better place because we have recognized and nurtured the same in the next generation.

Collectively, as a society, we can do a great deal of good through this process. That’s why every scholarship matters.

I received a scholarship given in the memory of a girl who died in high school as the result of a tragic car accident. My older siblings knew the young lady and told me a little bit about her. After a month of enjoying doing nothing after graduating, I finally acceded to my mother’s nagging and wrote a thank you note to the family. I thanked them for their kindness and shared remembrances of their daughter from my older siblings.

A few short weeks later, my older brother John was killed in a construction accident.

My parents chose to use some of the money given by the community to fund a scholarship in my brother’s memory. John enjoyed football and was a consummate teammate, providing leadership on the field and off the field. He was one mean middle linebacker.

The award continued for 20 years and stopped when the school district I attended merged with a neighboring district. We gave the remaining funds to the new school district’s football program.

Our communities and the world at large are made better because we remember those we love.

W

hat is the purpose of journalism?

Maybe it’s a question you’ve thought about before. Maybe not.

I’m not entirely convinced there’s a single right answer. But when I posed the question to Osceola High School students earlier this year they hit upon the same general definition as the American Press Institute, implying that there is some degree of consensus.

“The purpose of journalism,” writes the API, “is to provide citizens with the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, Editor their societies and their governSuzanne Lindgren ments.”

Sounds like a pretty essential task, i ht? But B t believe b li right? it or not, the public view of newspapers is not all kittens and cotton candy. In fact, if you head over to the crowd-sourced Q&A site Quora, answers to the same question are downright cynical.

“The purpose of newspapers is to place readers’ eyes in front of the advertisements,” writes one critic, identifying himself as a former reporter and editor.

A journalism student is slightly more generous, but reaches a similar conclusion.

There’s substance to these critiques. At the level of national news, market-driven forces do seem to propel the dissemination of opinion and commentary over traditional, “just the facts” reporting.

But at the level of the small town, I believe newspapers serve a purpose that hasn’t been mentioned at all: reinforcing a sense of community.

Here’s why. A couple years ago I was talking to Edna Siniff, the woman who helped transform the Sun’s sister paper, the Country Messenger, from a grocery store flier to an official newspaper. She told me her interest in cultivating the paper stemmed from a desire to bring cohesion back to Scandia, Marine and May Township after the Forest Lake and Stillwater school districts had divvied up the territory.

“The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing,” she said. “I would go to meetings in both communities trying to find out what was happening.”

Last week, I was reminded of my conversation with Siniff after reading about a start-up news effort in Weare, New Hampshire. The local paper had shut down. And people noticed.

“It was a news desert, as I call it,” the local library director, Michael Sullivan, told Editor & Publisher magazine. “And that makes it hard to get a sense of community.”

Sullivan and the Weare Public Library initiated the production of a four-page weekly, now a year old.

It’s a time-consuming endeavor, but Sullivan said he loves doing it and knows it’s a valuable service to the community.

Times are changing and it’s been hard on papers.

The internet has made it easy to broadcast and receive messages publicly, instantly and for free. Counter intuitively, and in spite of the hype, social media has been found to have an isolating effect on many users. The need for news that brings our communities together may be stronger than ever.

“The list keeps getting longer”

es, A.J. Fryerson complained about everything, and the number of folks on his “bad list” increased by the week. There’s a funny thing about collecting such a long list.

Chances are, a lot of those folks included A.J. on their bad lists as well. Sooner or later, people would say, something bad was going to happen to A.J. The September Columnist 8, 1998, edition of The Hometown Kevin Slimp News included A.J.’s latest discourse. Not a week went by that Fryerson didn’t write a letter to the editor, and on slow news weeks, they often found their way onto Iris Long’s opinion page.

His latest rant had to do with the only gas station in town, Buford Levitt’s Sinclair Oil. The problem with complaining about Levitt’s was obvious to anyone in the Valley. Along with Perry Pratt, Buford was just about the most liked and respected merchant in the community. A.J. wasn’t going to attract many allies.

His latest diatribe had to do with the way the gas pumps kept track of his purchases. It started when Buford introduced

“self-service” pumps at his station in 1997.

Prior to that, customers would pull into the station, order their gas, and pay the attendant. More times than not, the rotating cylinder would turn over by a penny or two, but the attendant always charged only what the customer ordered.

Buford replaced his old gas pumps during the same period he introduced self-service. Instead of the old cylinder models, Levitt’s now had electronic pumps with digital displays that indicated the amount of gas purchased.

This apparently upset A.J. to no end. He penned his letter on Monday, September 7, and dropped it off at the newspaper office, saving him the cost of a 32-cent stamp.

Unlike most Valley residents, Iris saw A.J.’s rantings as harmless. She figured she was doing the Valley a favor by letting him blow off steam in the paper rather than finding a more violent method of expressing himself.

And sometimes, as was the case with this letter, she found A.J.’s thought process rather amusing.

“Dear Hometown News,” he began. “I have been a customer of Sinclair Oil for more than 30 years. When I purchased my first car in 1963, I bought my fi rst tank of gas from Buford Levitt himself.”

Like many of A.J.’s letters, this one started out peacefully enough. But as was often the case, his tone quickly changed.

“What I want to know is,” he continued, “when gas pumps went from calculating the cost of your gas to robbing you like a slot machine in Las Vegas?”

The crux of the matter came down to the precision of those new pumps.

“Before Sinclair got those new pumps, you knew what your gas was going to cost. Now, you might as well close your eyes, because those numbers keep on rolling until they decide to stop on their own!”

He went on to call Buford the worst kind of thief: one who would steal from his neighbors and friends.

Yes, A.J. Fryerson made a lot of enemies, and as his list got longer many folks figured it was only a matter of time before he complained about someone who wouldn’t take it as calmly as Buford Levitt.

The letter to the editor on September 8 would be the last anyone would hear from A.J. in 1998. Yes, he liked to complain. But as the good folks of Lennox Valley would soon discover, A.J. had just complained for the last time.

MASTER GARDENING Can containers be gorgeous and practical?

T

he short answer is “yes.” If you don’t have the space or don’t want the work involved in maintaining a large garden, why not try container gardening. Containers can be used for growing everything from the standard flowers to many vegetables.

Let’s start with the typical containers we are used to seeing – those with flowers. There are several methods to get those full, gorgeous containers you see in the garden centers. You can purchase them already done for you – but this will come at a higher cost. They will still require the same type of watering, deadheading and Columnist nipping back that flower containers you do yourself require. If you Julie Kuehl choose to create your own containers, you need to make sure your container has good drainage. Most plants do not like their feet to be constantly wet. Decide if you want a hanging container or one that will sit on the ground or in a stand. This year I am experimenting with stacking various size containers to make a pyramid.

This is done by using three large pots, each one a bit

smaller than the first. This is one way to add a little design element to your containers. You must also decide if your container will be in a sunny or shady area, which determines the types of plants to use.

Just as when we plant an in-ground garden we need to carefully read the tags to be sure our plants will play well together in our container.

I like to use MiracleGro with Soil Moist when I do containers. This seems to work well for me. Whatever type of potting soil you choose, make sure that your plants are kept fertilized throughout the season to keep them blooming profusely. I like to use Soil Moist in my potting soil to help with the amount of watering needed during the summer. Remember not to overfill your containers with the potting mix. Allow enough room to be able to water without the water running over the edge of the container.

I follow the ABCs of planting when doing my containers. “A” plants are taller and go in the center of the pot; “B” plants are medium height for the next area and to fill out the container’s center portion; and “C” plantings are the trailers for the overflow of the edges. Plants should be placed fairly close together to get that full look of the nursery planters. When planting your container you might consider planting a conSEE KUEHL, PAGE 6

Highway garage next on list

If all goes as planned, Polk County’s fairground grandstand will fall this week.

Fair Society volunteers have been dissembling the structure and preserving what they can.

Final demolition was set to begin Mon., May 21, acting county administrator Jeffrey Fuge reported last week.

The county’s old highway department garage is next on the list for demolition. County staff are developing a request for proposals for the project and expect to release the request in early June.

Construction of the new highway shop is well underway. Polk County supervisors visited the facility last week.

Broadband Forward certification Last week, the Wisconsin State Broadband Office and Public Service Commission granted Polk County its Broadband Forward

certification. Polk is one of just a handful of Wisconsin counties to have received the distinction, according to the Polk County Economic Development Corporation.

In February, the county committed to helping expand broadband infrastructure by streamlining the application process for telecommunications companies and committing to some direct funding.

Going the extra mile…or two…or three

Imagine yourself as a businessman looking forward to retirement. You have no heirs to leave your business to and you’ve worked too hard and too long to see it all end when you retire. You set out to find someone you can mentor and eventually take over your business.

You narrow the choices down to two men. One has a long history of dependability, honesty and a good work ethic. He’s well respected by everyone and comes highly recommended.

The other has a long history as well. However, his history is quite different. He’s never held a job longer than two months. While he has never been convicted of stealing, rumors abound regarding past business practices. The words fraud and embezzlement have been frequently mentioned.

Which would you choose to en-

trust your business? Person A or person B? You probably don’t need and MBA to figure than one out!

No one would give person B much of a chance, unless of course, that person is Jesus.

The story of Judas Iscariot continues to amaze me. He watched Jesus heal people. He saw lives changed. He took part in a ministry that saw the blind given their sight and the lame being able to walk. Yet with all that he saw and all that he did, Judas looked for a way to destroy Jesus. Luke 22:4 tells us, “And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.”

Of course we know the rest of the story. Judas led a group of soldiers into the garden and betrayed Jesus with the kiss of a friend. How conniving! How heartless! To sell your friend for the price of a slave seems unconscionable.

However, there is something even more amazing about this story to me. The whole time Judas thought he was hiding in the shadows, Jesus knew his heart. Before

he was even born in a manger, Jesus knew Judas would betray him. Yet every day he greeted Judas. Every day he showed Judas the kind of love and acceptance only Jesus can give. He gave Judas every opportunity to change his story.

While Judas’ story came to an unfortunate end through suicide, his story reminds us of a great truth: “Jesus knows we’ll fail him, but he loves us anyway!”

That’s what grace is all about.

God reaching out to us knowing that we can never keep the promises we make; knowing that regardless of how much he loves us and is patient with us, we will go our own way. He’s willing to go the extra mile or two or three to do whatever it takes to draw us to himself.

Don’t be a Judas! Heed Jesus’ call to repentance, forgiveness and grace. He’s always there to give you a second chance. Visit a house of worship this week where the grace of Jesus is celebrated and second chances abound.

High speed chase ends with multiple charges

An Osceola man is facing six charges following a high speed chase May 15.

Adam Wilmes, 30, led officers f from the Polk County S Sheriff’s Department o a 14 mile chase on a after a traffic stop n near the roundabout a US HWY 8 and 208th at S St. in St. Croix Falls.

A According to the Wilmes Wil police report, speeds reached near 100 miles per hour during the pursuit.

The police report states that Wilmes entered the roundabout and did not yield the right of way to the officer who was in the roundabout. The officer had to slow to avoid a collision.

Wilmes pulled over after leaving the roundabout when the police activated emergency lights for a traffic stop. After coming to a compete stop, Wilmes’s Dodge truck accelerated back into traffic.

The police report notes that Wilmes was driving beyond highway speeds making numerous lane changes. The chase began at 4:21 in the afternoon and Wilmes slowed for a school bus turning into a driveway.

Spike strips were deployed at CTH F and 210th St, damaging the driver’s side front tire. According to the report, Wilmes nearly

lost control at two different areas on 210th St., avoiding accidents.

Wilmes eventually stopped a 195th St., just south of CTH F. Wilmes told police that he did not have a license and “panicked.�

Wilmes’s license is cancelled in Wisconsin and revoked in Minnesota. The officer observed a strong odor of intoxicants and was taken to St. Croix Regional Medical Center for a blood draw. Wilmes refused to answer any other questions after being read his rights.

Wilmes has been charged with failure to yield the right of way, failure to stop at stop signs, operating without a valid driver’s license, second degree recklessly endangering safety , operating while intoxicated (OWI) third offense and fleeing an officer.

Hunters advised to exercise caution near location of St. Croix County bear incident NEW RICHMOND, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating a close encounter with two bears on the Betterly Waterfowl Production Area (WPA), three miles east of New Richmond.

On May 13, a turkey hunter on Betterly WPA was approached by a yearling black bear and an adult sow. The yearling bear arrived first, coming within 10 feet of the hunter. After yelling at the bear to scare it, the hunter noticed the adult nearby; the yearling bear began to follow the hunter as he was walking away, prompting him to fire a warning shot into the air, which chased the bear off. When the hunter was leaving the area, the yearling bear appeared a second time.

The hunter shot into the air again, but the bear did not move off. As the hunter continued to retreat from the area, the yearling and sow trailed him until he reached an open field and was able to run back to his vehicle.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, this type of conflict is unusual and a bear is likely to run away in similar situations. “In this case, these bears were behaving aggressively by continuing to follow the hunter even after several attempts to scare them away,� said wildlife damage specialist Brad Koele. “Due to the safety risk these particular animals impose, they will be trapped and removed from the area.�

Agriculture – Wildlife Services received a report of a yearling bear in the vicinity exhibiting little fear of humans when visiting a bird feeder. The homeowner was advised to remove the bird feeders to prevent further conflicts.

Staff from DNR and USFWS are working to post signs at the entrance of Betterly WPA to alert users to the incident and precautions to take around bears. “When hunting or hiking in areas where bears are present, make noise so the bears know you are there,� Koele recommends. “If a bear gets too close, yell and wave your arms to scare the bear off while backing away from the area. If possible, seek shelter in a vehicle or building and wait for

the bear to leave. Never approach a bear.�

Shooting a bear outside of the bear hunting season is illegal unless the bear poses a direct threat to human safety.

The local warden should be notified as soon as possible if a bear is shot in self-defense.

The department partners with U.S. Department of Agriculture - Wildlife Services to respond to approximately 800 bear-related complaints reported in Wisconsin each year. Homeowners who are unable to resolve a conflict with a bear should contact the USDA Wildlife Services toll-free line at 1-800433-0663 for properties in southern Wisconsin, and 1-800-228-1368 for properties in northern Wisconsin.

The Polaris Foundation The Osceola Area Ambulance service first began operations on August 30, 1975. It was the result of the hard work and dedication of community members such as Leo Lutz, John Bonneprise, Jan Johnson, Bud Hendrickson, Molly Brown, Ruth Hjelle, Alma Inyart, and Greg Nelson the first board.

They saw a need and set out to fulfill it.

With a goal of $8,500

to be raised by the area residents in order to receive a grant of matching funds from the state, they proceeded to do what friends and neighbors have always done in similar circumstances: have bake sales, dances, raffles, and various other fundraisers.

The result was the training of EMTs, and the purchase of the first ambulance.

Over the next several years the ambulance board with Molly Brown as president expanded and grew. With the dedicated service of EMTs such as Purnal Tracy, Ceil Neidermire, Herman Rose, Ginny Pearson, Kathy Grant,

Barb Ulisnik, and Dave Wilker, the people living in the south half of Polk County were assured that in a time of need that need would be met.

Forty-eight years later the vision of the people mentioned above is still being met in the arrival of this new state of the art ambulance.

The people of the area recognize the hard work and dedication of all who have served, and all who have contributed to meet and exceed the emergency needs of the community by the Osceola Area Ambulance Service, thus makings the future financially secure and state of the art.

Braves fall in opener

The Braves fell 13-12 in a wild marathon 4.5 hour game against Menomonie. The game lasted 12 innings and featured 37 hits — 20 hits by Osceola and 17 by Menomonie.

Both teams were tied 9-9 after 9 innings with the Eagles scoring 3 runs in the top of the 12th. The Braves’ hopes for a comeback fell just short as the Braves scored twice in the 12th. Menomonie used five pitchers. Pitching duties in the opener for the Braves included Tyler Lueck, Noah Berger, Tyler Maxon and Blake Berger. Blake Berger and Brady Flaherty combined for 8 RBIs. Dave Measner, Pete Droher and Tyler Maxon each had three hits. The game also featured former Twins minor leaguer and St. Paul Saint Tanner Vavra, who played shortstop for Menomonie and had four hits.

“It was a fun and long game,” Braves centerfielder Pete Droher said. Droher rejoins the team this year along with Rob Rybicki. Rybicki and Droher had the nicknames Hans and Franz based on their strength similar to the Saturday Night Live skit of weightlifters who pump you up! “Pete and Rob - Hans and Franz - will pump you up and will have Osceola fans cheering this summer,” a scout from the River Falls area said. “It’s good they’re back.” The Braves offensive makeover also includes catcher Caleb Manecke from New Richmond.

The Braves vs. Spooner game was rescheduled from May 19 to June 3 at Spooner. The Braves host Champlin LoGators on May 23. The Hudson River Rats will play Spooner on May 26 at Oakey Park due to maintenance at Hudson’s field that day.

The fab lab will be located on the south end of town next to the fire station. The cost of building renovations and equipping the Fab Lab and Workforce Development Center is $1,175,000. The Mill

Pond Learning Foundation has received an EDA grant of $500,000, leaving the amount to raise at $675,000.

Kravik thanked the guest speaker and the invited guests, and concluded by encouraging the men and women gathered to get involved in the project.

Boys have just enough to win MBC title

The Osceola Chieftains’ overall roster is as small as it has been in several years. Don’t despair, it’s quality, not quantity. When the 2018 season began a total of 24 athletes met head girls coach Amanda Meyer, an okay number but not as many as the Chieftains normally would have. Could Osceola build on their lofty reputation for excellence? The OHS girls team had won the Middle Border conference title six times since 2000 and five times since 2008. Could such a lean team compete with seven other quality schools in the conference? The answer was a most definite yes.

Chiefs baseball sets sights on Regionals

Last year the Osceola Chieftain boys track and field team placed first by a scant one and a half points over runner-up New Richmond. Apparently the Osceola boys like drama and don’t want anyone leaving their seats early as they did it again this year. The Chieftains put together 144 team points over 18 events to capture their sixth team title since 2004 and their third in a row. The St. Croix Central Panthers were the tough-luck second place finishers this year with 141 points.

Soccer team ends up in deadlock with BW

The Osceola Chieftain soccer team played the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks to a 1-1 deadlock in a game played at the Robert W. Vesperman athletic complex in Osceola. It was a game that was crisply played with both teams having good sparks of offense and stellar play on the defensive end. The keepers from the respective teams made huge saves when called upon. Both teams had a shot hit the post late in the game only to fall harmlessly to the side. It was probably justice that the game ended in a tie as both teams played well.

“The first time we played Baldwin was a crazy game,” Osceola coach Nathan Anderson said. “They beat us 5 to 3. We were looking to not let them score as many

this time. The defense played well, especially since Baldwin plays with three forwards. Normally we come up against two or one, so to have an extra person to mark and still only let in one goal is phenomenal.”

The wind helped the Blackhawks open the scoring early in the game. BW lofted a high shot toward the Osceola goal that found the back of the net.

“They scored within the first five minutes on a shot from long range,” Anderson said. “They had the wind in the first half and it made the shot just barely soar over our goalkeeper’s head.”

Osceola was playing into the stiff wind in the first half but was still able to even things up on a goal by Sydney Mork.

Softball has a huge week in conference play

Things started well for the Osceola Chieftain softball team last week and kept getting better.

Osceola started by completing a suspended game against St. Croix Central with the Chieftains coming back to defeat the Panthers in extra innings. OHS then traveled to Somerset to challenge the Spartans and came home with a big win.

Osceola ended their week with a huge win over the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks.

Baldwin-Woodville has been the cream of

the crop the last several seasons in the Middle Border, having won or tied for the top spot seven years in a row. The Blackhawks also have a State title and a couple of near misses during this timeframe. This time Osceola played with confidence against BW. The Chieftains got great pitching, solid defense and just enough hitting to pull out a 2-1 win.

t was a beautiful morning to be walking through the spring woods.

There were turkeys gobbling in the distance as songbirds serenaded each other with love songs. With eyes scanning the landscape, my older brother Richard Bennett of Hudson was familiar with this location and the dead elm tree on the side hill.

Getting close Dick spotted the morel mushrooms he saw a few days earlier that were too small to pick. Although they’d grown a couple inches he told me over his cell phone that he was unsure if he should pick them today or wait a couple more days and come

back with hopes that no one else would find them.

Today is May 17. My white lilacs indicated that the morels were ready come out a week ago when that tree was starting to bloom. Dick had confirmed that my lilacs were right although he says you can’t always count on lilacs and morels to show up at the same time. Dick just feels fortunate and blessed, “The Lord leads me to where morels are...”

Richard said, “The morchella are just taking off and if we get rain they will be popping. I found some last week and left them in a couple locations when they were just coming up.” With a lifetime of “schrooming” under his belt, at age 77 Dick moves through the woods as he always has done; still in great shape he SEE BENNETT, PAGE 23

Chieftain golfers complete MBC play, on to Regionals

The Middle Border conference golf season is done.

What would be the best word to describe the Osceola Chieftains play this season? Improved certainly would be appropriate. Last year Osceola placed eighth in MBC play. This year they moved up to sixth as a team and showed at some meets that they are capable of performing at an even higher level.

So close. All seven entries for the Osceola Chieftain team got eliminated in the first day of the Middle Border conference tournament.

It probably doesn’t take a whole lot of sting out of the disappointment but there were a couple of matches that could have gone either way. If they would have gone in the Chieftains’ favor they would have been playing on the second day of the tournament.

Osceola’s Nick Stroshane played at No.1 singles and was ready for his match with Nati Raehl of Eau Claire Regis. Stroshane played tough tennis in the first set and put away Raehl by a score of 6-1. Raehl turned the tables in the second set as he evened the match with a 6-1 win of his own. Raehl kept the momentum into the tie-breaker defeating Stroshane by a score of 10-4.

Chieftain Bryce Johnson suffered a similar fate at No. 3 singles against Jon Peterson of Baldwin-Woodville.

After splitting the first two sets their match also came down to a tie-breaker. Peterson

held on to defeat Johnson 10-7.

“Big bummer, especially because Nick started off so strong against Regis and he was playing some incredible tennis,” Osceola coach Beth Friedrichsen said. “Also, it was a bummer that Bryce lost in a 10 point tie-breaker because he was playing well too. It would have been nice for those two seniors to have advanced a little further and be playing (in the conference semi-finals).”

Osceola fell in each of the other five matches in straight sets: Nolan Claassen at No. 2 singles, Brayden Thomas at No. 4 singles, Ollie Dressel and Graham Hunt at No. 1 doubles, Jedidiah Durand and Hahns Huebsch at No. 2 doubles and Jake Jensen and Liam Gallagher at No. 3 doubles.

Despite getting bumped out in the first round of the MBC tournament Durand was still upbeat. “Osceola tennis is awesome,” he said. “I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person because of it, and I know the pattern will continue for myself SEE TENNIS, PAGE 17

Saints split four games When and Where: May 14 at Amery Outcome: Amery 10, St. Croix Falls 0 Highlights: St. Croix could generate very little offense in their 10-0 loss to Amery in a non-conference game. Luke Thaemert and Calan Leahy each had a hit for the Saints.

When and Where: May 15 at Luck/Frederic Outcome: Luck/Frederic 10, St. Croix Falls 3 Highlights: St. Croix lost their second consecutive game, this time to conference rival Luck/Frederic. Freshman Johnny Wiehl collected two of the three SCF hits.

When and Where: May 17 at St. Croix Falls Outcome: St. Croix Falls 10, Siren 0 Highlights: St. Croix got back on the winning track with a 10-0 shutout of the Dragons. Sam Wilson threw the complete game shutout allowing just one hit. Wilson, Josh Skallet and Aaron Riley led the offense with two hits each.

When and Where: May 18 at Somerset Outcome: St. Croix Falls 7, Somerset 5 Highlights: St. Croix made it two wins in a row with a 7-5 win over Somerset in a non-conference game. Leahy and Alex Mysicka led the offense with two hits each. Jared Lessman drove in three runs for the Saints.

Upcoming: St. Croix Falls (5-seed) opens WIAA Regional play on May 24 with a game at Luck/Frederic (4-seed). The winner of that game will travel to Webster to face the top seeded Tigers on May 29.

Upcoming: St. Croix opened WIAA Regional play hosting the Spooner Rails on May 22. The winner of that game will travel to Bloomer to face the top seeded Blackhawks on May 23.

When and Where: May 17 at Turtleback golf course in Rice Lake Outcome: The St. Croix Falls Saints completed their Lakeland conference part of the schedule at the 18-hole conference final at Turtleback. St. Croix placed eighth as a team.

Highlights: Mitchell Steele led St. Croix with a 93, Madisen Jensen shot a 110 and Noah Horn a 113.

Upcoming: St. Croix Falls opened WIAA Regional play on May 22 at Voyager Village in Webster. Sectional play is scheduled for Frederic on May 29.

Lady Saints win Lakeland title, boys second

When and Where: May 15 at Frederic Outcome: The St. Croix Falls Saints girls dominated the West Lakeland conference meet winning the title with 207 points. Grantsburg was a distant second place with 97.

Highlights: St. Croix placed first in nine events led by Grace Klein and Anna Klein who won two individual titles. Addie McCurdy and Jordan Braund each placed first in one individual event. The SCF relay teams also had a great night with Riley Henk, Grace Bergstrom, Anja Erickson and Jenna Driscoll placing first in the 400m relay; Henk, Braund, Driscoll and Addie McCurdy in the 800m relay; Anna Klein, Addie McCurdy, Alaina Driscoll, Emily McCurdy in the 1600m relay.

Comments: “I was thrilled with how well the girls competed,” St. Croix head girls coach Steph Belisle said. “A few highlights were our athletes going first, second, and third in both the 100m and 400m dashes. Additionally, Addie McCurdy had her best 300m hurdle race of

the season and it was fun to see her run well for the win, with Lauren Borst trailing closely for second. We had many athletes with personal bests on the season, so I am hopeful we are peaking at the right time and ready for Regional competition.”

Outcome: The SCF boys placed second at the conference meet trailing winning team Webster by just 1.5 points.

Highlights: First place finishers included Logan Ross in the 110m hurdles, Ryan Peltz in the pole vault, Caleb Gearhart in the shot put and the 1600m relay team of Ross, Tony DeLuca, Derek Fisk and Andrew Opel.

Comments: “We had a great effort from our kids at the Lakeland West Conference meet (last) Tuesday, but came up just 1.5 points short of the championship,” SCF boys head coach Kris Wallace said.

“That said, we had some great individual efforts and all-conference honorees at the meet.”

Baldwin-Woodville drew first blood scoring their only run of the game in the fourth inning. Alex Carlson led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a bunt by Lexie Klatt. With two outs Lindsay Burr drove in the game’s first run with a double.

Osceola responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a one-batter rally. After the first two Chieftains were retired Ellie Dodge knotted the game with a line drive homerun over the right-centerfield fence.

“Watching the ball go over the fence was so awesome,” Dodge said. “My team had been fighting

the whole game to hold BW to one run and tying up the game was a momentum shift that we really needed. We hit the ball really well and played the best defense we have all season for the rest of the game and it showed.”

Osceola got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Grengs doubled with two outs and Sarah Butterfield was inserted into the game as a courtesy runner for the Chieftain pitcher.

Butterfield moved up to third base with Hayley Palmsteen at the plate. Later in the at-bat Palmsteen legged out an infield hit with Butterfield scoring from third giving Osceola a 2-1 lead.

The Osceola defense held BW in the seventh to ensure the huge Osceola win.

Although the win at Somerset wasn’t as dramatic it was still just as important. Osceola fell behind 4-2 after three innings but

rallied for six in the fourth to gain the lead. The Chieftains added a single tally in the fifth and three more in the seventh to secure the win. Osceola banged out 17 hits in their 12-6 decision. Grengs and Rebecca Morrison led the offense with three hits each.

“I thought that the team showed a lot of confidence at the plate,” Gillespie said. “Hayley Palmsteen had a big night at the plate along with Rebecca Morrison. All the girls were taking good swings at good pitches. They also did a good job of executing plays. I felt the whole team was playing with a high level of confidence.”

Osceola opened the week with a 6-5 win over St. Croix Central in a game that began on May 8 but was suspended due to darkness. Jam Dannenmueller had a huge game at the plate going 3-for-4 scored a run and drove in three.

Despite the losses last week Osceola still earned the 4-seed in the upcoming Regional tournament and will open play in Osceola against the 5-seed, the Amery Warriors, on May 24.

The winner of the opening round game will travel to Prescott on May 29 to take on the top seeded Panthers.

Osceola opened the week with a 7-1 loss at home to the New Richmond Tigers. The following day the Chieftains suffered a tough 3-2 loss to the Ellsworth Panthers on Osceola’s home field. OHS ended their week traveling to Baldwin to take on the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks where the home team prevailed 11-2.

“We were a little inconsistent with our play this week,” Collins said. “I thought we swung the bat pretty well. We struggled however to execute the little things we needed to do in order to continue to put pressure on the other team.

The little things like covering bases, getting bunts down and running the bases well often get overlooked. These little things always seem to come back to hurt you in big ways.”

Osceola just could not get the big hit against New Richmond.

The Chieftains had baserunners and got them into scoring position but could not get the clutch hit to account for runs. Matt Schultz and Tyler Ingram both had two hits to lead Osceola’s nine hit attack.

The best game of the week for Osceola was against Ellsworth.

The Panthers struck for a pair of runs in the first inning but Osceola came back to tie the game with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings. The Panthers scored the winning run in the seventh. Schultz and Howard Miller both had two hits to lead the Osceola offense. Brett Carlson pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up a pair of runs, walking two and striking out six.

“The Ellsworth game was a well-played game by both teams,”

Collins said. “It was fun to see two good high school pitchers battle it out on a perfect spring day in May.” Osceola dropped their final game of the week 11-2 to Baldwin-Woodville. The Chieftains opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead but it was all BW after that. The Blackhawks scored four times in both the third and fifth innings and three times in the sixth to salt away the win.

Despite the losses Collins liked the play of several of his athletes.

He especially was pleased with junior catcher Logan Clark.

“I thought Logan Clark played exceptionally well this week and throughout the entire year for us behind the plate,” Collins said.

“Logan is one of the best defensive catchers in the conference.

His ability to block every ball in the dirt is so impressive. Catchers don’t get enough credit for the work they do. It often doesn’t show up in highlights but is so incredibility valuable to a team.”

and all those after us. Its members are fantastic people and friends, and it’ll really [be sad] to part ways with them.”

The season is not done for Osceola as they now enter WIAA tournament play.

“We have sub-sectionals left (this) week and it

will be nice to not have New Richmond with us [as New Richmond will compete in the D-1 tournament] but Ashland will be a tough competitor,” Friedrichsen said.

“We will be practicing 10-point tie breakers at practice for the foreseeable practices, that is for sure.”

Osceola had one senior, Luke Ekstrom, on the varsity. The Chieftains leaned on Ekstrom for his experience and leadership and he helped the team settle in to improved play week after week. Besides Ekstrom the Osceola varsity was very young. Sophomores Nick Kremer and Ryan Leidle and freshmen Colton Wilmot and Jacob Hall saw most of the varsity action this season.

The team started the season quite raw but now has the appearance of a young veteran squad.

The highlight of the last week of conference play no doubt was Hall earning co-medalist honors with Zach Nugent of Ellsworth at the 18-hole finale at New Richmond.

Both golfers shot 83s at the tricky New Richmond golf club.

“I’ve had an awesome season with some great teammates and coaches,” Hall said. “I always set high expectations for myself with anything I do and coming into the season I expected to be

one of the better players out there mostly because I know what I’m capable of shooting on a consistent basis. The start of the season was a little shaky with some high scores but as the season has gone on I’ve been much more confident and because of that I’ve played much better.”

Osceola placed sixth as a team at the New Richmond finale with Wilmot carding a 99, Leidle a 100 and Kremer and Ekstrom both shooting 106s.

The first MBC event was a 9-hole meet at Krooked Kreek in Osceola.

The Chieftains placed fourth as a team with Hall leading the way with a 41. Leidle (42) and Kremer (47) were next in line for the Chieftains with Ekstrom and Wilmot both finishing with 48s.

“We had our best varsity team total of the season,” Osceola coach Lisa Richert said. “We played awesome with Jacob leading the pack and everyone breaking 50, even in the rain. It was our highest finish of the year.”

Winning the conference title is nice, of course, but now comes the tournaments. Osceola competed in the WIAA Regional meet at Amery on May 21 and the top four finishers in each event at Amery will move on the Sectional action in Colby on May 24.

“As we look forward to the Regional, Sectional, and State meets, we are continuing with our driven, focused, and persevering mindsets,” Meyer summarized.

We were trailing a great St. Croix Central team by two points after Kolten Heimbach closed in on the six point deficit we faced heading into the 3200. Kolten ran a great race and then the 4x400 ran a gritty race to win the team championship for the third year in a row.”

tains placed second in four events with the final one, the 1600m relay, being the clincher. The 3200m relay team of Feldt, Blake Slater, Sean Rogers and David Olson got Osceola off to a great start by placing second in the first event of the day. Haakon Carlson also earned second place finishes in both the high jump and long jump.

“Our athletes came ready to perform thanks to their dedication to the sport and the incredible group of coaches that they get to work with on a daily basis,” Stewart said. “Gabe Baier had an amazing 300m hurdle race, achieving a PR (personal record) of over two seconds. All three of our hurdlers (Dye, Baier and Jacob Campbell) ran PRs in both of their events. Coach Haase has been working very hard with them and they have been responding to their training. Haakon Carlson also competed very well in all three jumps, which is not an easy feat due to the amount of impact the body takes with that much jumping. Jack Feldt has an incredible amount of drive to win the 800 shortly after running a great 400m race. It takes incredible mental toughness and a special young man to accomplish what he did. Every one of our boys competed well and we are very proud of them.”

Although the athletes were the most obvious champions of the day, they weren’t the only ones.

“We are very grateful to all of the parents, athletes, community members and school district staff who helped in many ways,” Stewart concluded. “It takes a large group of people to put on a successful meet and we received many compliments about our workers doing an excellent job.”

“With respect to the conditions of the woods there are a few weeds and you can tell from the picture I sent you that there is a little grass growing. I’m finding them in buckthorn. But with no rain and heat I’m thinking that the south facing slopes will be over soon. The ones I’ve just found are on southeast slopes,” he added.

So what should beginners look

for when they go looking for morel mushrooms? According to Richard, “Look for dead elms that still have bark on them. Some of those trees will pump out lots of morels but not every elm will. I don’t know why. An 8” diameter tree is ideal. I find more on slopes but they can be anywhere. I think a slope gets better drainage as it washes nutrients from the soil down the hill into the valley.”

Get kids cooking with a visit to a local farm

chool’s out! Finding things to do with the kids during the summer is easier when one explores where our food comes from.

Some favorite memories of my kids being home during the summer were when we went to pick berries and visited farmers markets or farms. Friends with kids joined us and we’d pack lunches and make a day of it.

Our kids learned more on those days about where their food came from than anywhere else. One of my most memorable trips was to a dairy farm. The kids were in Wild Chow local heaven as we watched the farmer milk the cows. The kids squealed Lisa Erickson with delight watching the pigs run back and forth along the fence.

The kids each brought home two eggs. On our way home we stopped at the store to buy cheese and some ham to make omelets for dinner—connecting all the dots of “where our food comes from.”

We talked about the farm visit for days. Some of my kids declared they were going to be a farmer when they grew up. I’m happy my kids got to see where their food comes from. It gave them a better understanding of the process it takes to get food on the table and an appreciation for our farmers and the animals that feed us.

Kid friendly Cheese and Ham Omelets 3 fresh farm eggs 1 Tbsp. butter cheddar cheese, preferably from a local cheese company 1 thick slice ham, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

In a frying pan, melt butter until foaming. Slowly pour in the eggs. Let the eggs cook for 30 seconds until the bottom of the omelet is lightly set. Push the set parts of the omelet into the uncooked center.

Cook until the omelet has set further, then push those set parts into the center of the omelet again.

Repeat the process until the eggs have just set, but the omelet is still soft in the center. With a large spatula, carefully flip the omelet. Put the cheese and three-quarters of the ham in the center of the omelet and cook until the cheese has melted, about 1 minute.

Fold the omelet in half, then remove pan from heat and tilt slightly to move the omelet to the edge of the pan. Slide the omelet onto a serving plate.

Shape it into a neat roll. Sprinkle the top with the remaining ham.

Maintenance Technician and/or Senior Maintenance Technician Parker Hannifin - a World Class Motion and Control Manufacturing Company has an immediate need for a second shift full-time Maintenance Position. This position is in our Grantsburg, Wisconsin facility at 533 N Oak Street, Grantsburg, WI 54840.

Essential Functions: - Trouble shoot and problem solve highly technical equipment and/or processes.

- Perform preventive maintenance on more complex equipment and processes (internally/ externally).

- Dismantle and reassemble machines undergoing repairs, overhauls and/or rebuilds.

- Complex facility related repairs and/or modifications.

- Perform repairs on electrical processes such as pulling wire, hanging conduit, wiring boxes and circuit breaker panels.

- Assist in the installation and repair of heating/air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems.

- Perform repairs and/or modifications on pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems and equipment.

- Perform these and other duties as requested by Supervision.

Requirements: - Two to five years related maintenance experience in the above listed job duties and/or related education and experience to provide for a demonstrated ability to perform descripted responsibilities.

- Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, and use precision measuring instruments.

- Working understanding of PLC and robotics - Strong knowledge of National Electric Code; electronic circuitry and diagrams and ability to troubleshoot performance failure.

- Experience repairing electrical and mechanical functions of production machinery and support equipment including conventional, hydraulic presses, CNC machines, compressed air, chill water, and building ventilation.

- Must have experience with all or most of the following: plumbing, 480 volt electrical systems, forklift, welding, machinery relocation, and metal working equipment.

- Must have the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair problems with machinery and systems including making specific recommendations and determinations as to when rebuild procedures are necessary under normal and emergency conditions.

- Must be capable of working independently and part of a team - Possess strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and proficient computer skills - Detail oriented. Good judgment to comply with instructions and standard procedures, methods or practices - Maintain a positive and professional attitude with good attendance.

Physical Requirements: Required to stand most the time, lifting to 50 pounds is required
