State of Wisconsin presents proclamation to St. Croix National Scenic Riverway The National Park Service and the St. Croix River Association are celebrating 50 years of the St. Croix as a nationally designated Wild & Scenic Riverway. U.S. Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Wisconsin State Senator Patty Schachtner, community leaders, and young river stewards gathered at the St. Croix River Visitor Center Thursday, April 5, to commemorate the anniversary and highlight plans to celebrate all year long. “Today’s riverway reflects the commitment of people working together over the past 50 years,” said Julie Galonska,

giveBIG St. Croix Valley, a daylong online fundraiser, returns April 24. This year, the giving event that started in Osceola and expanded to include St. Croix Falls and Amery is furthering its reach to New Richmond and Somerset. While giveBIG St. Croix Valley happens in 24 hours on April 24, donor investment will have a long lasting impact in area communities. In the past five years, Amery, Osceola and St. Croix Falls have raised more than $970,000 for 71 nonprofits through giveBIG SCV. Donations help organizations with vital projects and programming that change lives. “giveBIG St. Croix Valley is focused on more than just the 24 hour of giving,” says giveBIG Development Director Jessica Neumann. “Strong communities are created by individuals empowering one another.

Man will hike Ice Age Trail with new heart, artificial knees St. Croix Falls will serve as the starting point for a most unusual through-hike. A Chicago area man plans to hike the entire on the Ice Age Trail (IAT) with a transplanted heart. The Indianhead chapter of the IAT will host a talk by that hiker, Bill Spence, the day before he steps off from Interstate Park on April 29 for his planned 1,200-mile journey across Wisconsin. The chapter meeting will be held at Café Wren in Luck at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. The public is invited to hear Spence discuss the challenges
of hiking with a transplanted heart and to learn more about organ donation. The 64-year-old Elgin, Ill., man received his transplant four years ago after his own heart had worsened to the extent that he was living in a hospital with hope of a transplant. Thus it’s not surprising that Spence will mark April as National Donate Life Month by seeking to sign up new organ donors during his hike. “I got my gift,” he said about his new heart. “So this is my way of giving back.” SEE HIKE, PAGE 10
