DNR considers renewal of F&A Dairy’s permit

Polk County will delay demolition of its fairgrounds grandstand until more information comes to light on the feasibility and cost of repairing the historic seating area. Although improvements to the aging structure had been in the county’s capital improvement plan for about five years, according to County Administrator Dana Frey, the matter became urgent last fall after an engineer declared it unsafe. mented several changes to its system, bringing dissolved oxygen levels under the required limit last year. The DNR has tentatively decided to approve the dairy’s Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WPDES) Permit through March 31, 2022, according to a January public notice. Drivers of all-terrain and utility-task vehicles may now ride on Polk County’s portion of the Gandy Dancer State Trail when the ground is frozen, between Dec. 1 and March 31. Previously, ATVs and UTVs were only allowed on the county’s Cattail and Clayton to Clear Lake trails. The Polk County Board of Supervisors amended the Parks Ordinance at its Jan. 17 meeting to allow for winter use of ATV and UTV on the trail. Snowmobiles were already allowed to use the trail with frozen ground. In a news release, the county’s Parks Department notified riders that it “will declare when the trail is open and closed in a similar way to how the snowmobile trails are declared” — via signage and notifica-
