Year-end momentum sets stage for 2018 Discovery Center challenge met Osceola rose to the challenge in the fourth quarter of 2017 to help raise funds for the new Discovery Center. A $500,000 Challenge Grant, initiated by the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation and two other community leaders as a means to encourage broader participation in the fundraising campaign, sparked public interest and support – to the tune of more than $515,000. With the Discovery Center groundbreaking on June 27, a
long-awaited vision became a reality, and along with it came momentum. “The community came forward in a big way to show their commitment to the Discovery Center project,” said Campaign Chair Mark Kravik. “Through the years the people in our community have readily recognized the value of taking an active role in ensuring quality services, education and resources are available for all of our residents. The Discovery Center is just one more example of that can-do spirit.” However, Kravik stressed the need to keep focused on the campaign, and called on residents to

continue their support. Fundraising must keep pace with construction, and the capital campaign is urging everyone to get on board and help make sure that happens. Again, it’s about momentum. “Strong financial support on the part of the community adds heft to our ask when talking with foundations and major donors,” explained Kravik, “and it increases the likelihood of getting additional funding.” As public support increases, momentum speeds up, and builds up. “It’s winter – think snowball effect. A really big snowball,” SEE CENTER, PAGE 20
