Career Academy Program brings students into workforce BY ISABELLA WARNER STUDENT REPORTER
When Jared Cutts was in high school he wanted his learning to extend beyond the classroom. He wanted hands-on experience in the workforce. “When you’re sitting in class learning you’re absorbing information, you’re not out experiencing what you’re learning,” Cutts explained. He joined Osceola High School’s Career Academy Program because he thought the opportunity for hands-on learning through the program was unique. He did not know that CAPS would lead to a job as a fulltime employee with local paddle manufacturer, Branches LLC. The Osceola-based manufacture
of Bending Branches and Aqua Bound paddles mentors high school students in the Career Academy Program, with the aim of helping students choose a career. The company’s president, Ed Vater, strives to hire long term employees. Many high school students aren’t sure of what career they would like to go into. Vater believes the CAPS program helps provide clarity for high school students exploring what they want to do in the future. “I love mentoring and I desire to help students decide and figure out what career path they want to choose,” Vater explained. Branches LLC is a small company with many small departments, but they all come together and work as one big team. Through CAPS, students are able to expe-
rience all departments within the company. They spend time in marketing, engineering, purchasing and accounting. “The CAPS program gives them an opportunity to go out and experience what they have been learning inside the classroom” Cutts stated. Amy Krenz is the advisor for the CAPS program. During the interview for her position as business and marketing teacher at Osceola High School she was told coordinating a school-to-work program would be part of her job. “I wish I had the option to join CAPS when I was in high school,” Krenz stated. “I believe it is a great opportunity for high school students to decide what career path is SEE CAPS, PAGE 8
