ArtBarn hosts community art classes

Last winter, the St. Croix ArtBarn began hosting Canvas at the ArtBarn, a weekly painting class for painters of any experience level.

Participants were supplied with all they needed to complete an acrylic painting each week as well as a lemonade or cocoa to drink. Peg Medcraft, ArtBarn board member and course instructor, was inspired by the popular art and wine classes offered in the Twin Cities.

“I wanted to go to them, but they are forty-five minutes away or an hour away and I didn’t want to drive that far,” said Medcraft, “It’s really popular right now all over the U.S., it’s on Pinterest, and I just wanted to bring that to the community.”

Healing veterans with wilderness

Jeff Butler doesn’t do a lot of talking when he brings military veterans on the river. He knows the water and wilderness surrounding it will communicate in their own language.

“When we go out, we talk about Vets on the River or the history of the river,” he says, “but a lot of the time we just don’t even talk. We just sit back and watch the guys.”

Butler, the National Park Service ranger who coordinates outings for Vets on the River, has collected his share of heartwarming stories since helping to start the program in 2012. He’s SEE VETERANS, PAGE 17

The course is straight, flat and fast.

And those who run or walk it will help raise funds for a different kind of journey: a mission trip for youth at Peace Lutheran Church in Dresser.

Dubbed “Peace Out and Back 5K,” the course sends racers safely down back roads, which will be blocked from traffic with help from members of Dresser’s fire department.

When participants reach the halfway point, they’ll turn around and come back.

AmeriCorps volunteers live, serve in community

As birds and green return full force after a relatively mild winter and spring, local AmeriCorps volunteers are returning to a variety of outdoor activities as well.

Living and working in Osceola, these volunteers participate in life at Community Homestead, a collection of six households including adults with developmental challenges, who together operate an organic dairy farm, CSA garden, bakery, kitchen, winter crafts and wood shop.

Wynne, a member of the church and its youth ministry, is one of the race’s organizers. “It’s the same course we had the first year, and people who’ve run it in past said this is where they set personal record times. The road is very flat and it’s a back road. … Parents can let kids run without worrying that they’re going to get lost.”

The race raises funds to send church youth on an annual service trip. This year, they’ll go to Mission, South Dakota to help rebuild and repair houses.

What is in a name? at a school board meeting to gain approval for the request they made regarding naming the gym floor after Osceola Coach Dave Rusham.

The board listened to the presentation has now approved the Osceola High School gym floor being dedicated as the “Dave Rusham Court” as requested and paid for by alumni and community members following a lively discussion by the board.

“We feel that Dave Rusham contributed to a lot at Osceola High School,” Raffesberger said. “We had a great tradition of winning when he was here and we feel

he should be honored for that.”

School Board member Pete Kammerud commented on things like name recognition and where it might stop.

“I am all for honoring those that have made a strong tradition in Osceola,” Kammerud said.

“But there are many people that we could honor and we will run out of ways to do that plus there is the fact that many do not know some of these people.”

Deb Rose-Raffesberger took the floor in defense of the lack of name recognition.

“What better way to teach our youth about

past local history,” Rose-Raffesberger said.

“This is a way to keep them part of us and remember them, it is part of our history to honor those that made an impact on us.”

The floor is to be refinished this summer and letters, to be approved by the board, will be added to the floor to honor the outstanding coaching Rusham provided during his career here.

A dedication date will be arranged most likely during the basketball season.

As part of the fundraising efforts, Raffesberger told the board that community members and

alumni who are supporting the proposal are also interested in starting a booster club.

Along with the possibility of a booster club Timm Johnson recommended that the district think about investing in marketing to help bring students to the school district.

“Osceola Vision 2030 will be creating a video marketing the benefits of living in our community,” Johnson said. “Perhaps that may be a place for this promotion.”

The board consider it at a future meeting.

Bob Wright returned with additional information regarding the State’s

budget for public schools.

He thanked everyone for the continued work to petition for more funding to public schools and asked that we continue with this. Wright provided updates of the proposed changes by the State which affects our entire educational system.

Outdoor water meters go wireless in Osceola

The days of visiting homes to test and read outdoor water meters are likely numbered for utilities staff in the Village of Osceola. When the transition to iPERL water meters is complete, workers will be able to get readings wirelessly.

“We have a hand-held system now,” said Village Administrator Joel West at the village board’s June 9 meeting. “We take a wand and electronically touch a pad on the outside of the house to get a reading. But eventually with the iPERL meters we’re switching to a radio read. At some point we’ll be able to wirelessly read those, either remotely from a fixed location, or at most we’d drive through the community and pick those up as we drive by.”

The meters track the volume of water used outdoors, which isn’t isn’t subject to sewer charges.

That amount is subtracted from the household’s water bill.

Because they carry a history, the new meters can help residents solve problems with high water use.

“If you’re having water issues in your home, usage that seems to be high or maybe a toilet that’s running or something unusual,” said West, “we can go back a period of

days and look at water use by hour or day … so we can help people discern where they might be using the water.”

With the new meter, the village has already helped one household solve a water-use mystery.

Additionally, the water meters are guaranteed for 20 years and do not need to be tested for accuracy, said West.

Although they measure outdoor water use, the iPERL meters must be installed indoors so they don’t freeze. Until now, meters designed to measure use on outdoor spigots were allowed.

According to West, the change will affect about a dozen people in Osceola, and the village will give them about five years to transition to the new meter.

Coy is an extra-large eight month old 80 pound Black Lab pup. He is robust in every category. Coy loves playing in the water, rides well in the truck, has started water fowl training and knows how to sit on command. Coy is friendly to all and ready for the world.

For the past month and a half, Arnell has been taking in donated items for the annual Shelter Garage Sale. Volunteers Pam Carson and Joyce Klinkhammer headed up the pricing of those items. In addition to pricing hundreds of items, they also test each and every electrical appliance, clean up dust covered treasures and research prices for them online.

This year they enlisted four volunteers to complete the monumental task.

Our sale is an outdoor sale, so we watch the weather forecast diligently. This year we were relieved when the local news channels all predicted that the day of our sale, Saturday June 13, was going to be the best day of the weekend, with rain holding off until Sunday.

With a crew of eighteen carrying boxes out, unloading them and finding the appropriate table for display, we were ready for the sale to begin. As our sale began, so did the rain. It drizzled at first and then it poured. And it continued to pour until 1 p.m.

Luckily our sale has a healthy, faithful following and shoppers lined the street with their umbrellas. They shopped in the rain, lifting tarps and snatching up their purchases. Everything was soaked but it didn’t dampen the spirit of the shoppers or volunteers. Everyone commiserated and promised to return when the rain let up. And many of them did just that.

The sale raised over $3,000 for the shelter, rivaling the amount raised last year in perfect weather. The success of our 2015 Shelter Garage Sale was because of the people; the people who donated, the people who collected and priced, the people who helped to set up and work the sale and the people who shopped and bought garage sale treasures in the rain.

So we can’t even laugh now?

I

love a good stand up comedian. There’s nothing quite like some edgy observational humor to make me laugh and then think about where our society is heading.

I remember seeing the late, great George Carlin in concert in the early 1980s. Carlin never shied away from being on the edge, but boy he sure made you laugh.

Recently, Jerry Seinfeld made news when he announced that he is no longer appearing on college campuses because he feels the students are too “politically correct” to understand and appreciate the intention of the jokes.

Seinfeld, 61, has been making the rounds of the talk shows and said in a recent radio interview “I don’t Publisher play colleges but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges, they’re so PC.’ I have no interest Tom Stangl in gender or race or anything like that,” Seinfeld said. “But everyone else is kind of, with their calculating—is this the exact right mix? I think that’s—to me it’s anti-comedy. It’s more about PC-nonsense.”

“Let me give you an example,” Seinfeld continued. “My wife says to [my 14-year-old daughter], ‘Well, you know, in the next couple of years, I think you’re going to want to be hanging around the city more on the weekends, so you can see boys.’ And you know what my daughter says? She says ‘that’s sexist.’

“They just want to use these words. ‘That’s racist.’ ‘That’s sexist.’ ‘That’s prejudice.’ They don’t know what they’re talking about.”

I really believe that we have gone through the looking glass as a society. As recently as 20 years ago, college campuses were the place to be for testing the limits of all sorts of boundaries. But the wave of political correctness has become so prevalent that it trumps nearly every other point of view.

The Merriam – Webster dictionary defines political correctness as “conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated.”

I’ve seen Seinfeld do stand up on television. He mostly makes fun of the human condition. It would be a stretch to call him racist or sexist. This is the guy who had one of the highest rated sitcoms in recent history and the shows were basically about nothing, simply making observations about how silly we can be as a society and exaggerating for comic affect.

But in today’s hyper sensitive and self-centered world, lobbing the phrase “racist” or “sexist” is the equivalent of going nuclear in a war. It is simply the easy way out of actually having a discussion about the issues that comedy can raise.

It takes a strong person to be able to respond to a charge of being a bigot, even when you know in your heart that you are not prejudiced. This issue is also being painted as the “old guys” (Seinfeld is 61) not understanding the new realities of life.

Give me a break, there are no new realities.

There are only people who can’t laugh and need to make sure the rest of us don’t get the chance.

I believe we need to laugh, now more than ever.

If the comedian is offensive, change the channel, don’t go see a performance again.

ometimes it’s nice to remember that you’re on planet earth. To watch trout jump in moving water, hear birds sing and bullfrogs gulp. To feel a dragonfly, that creature of ancient instincts, land on your shoulder — and stay.

And then it’s back to screens and coffee and cars and Editor meetings. I feel Suzanne Lindgren immensely fortu-

nate to have a job that’s meaningful to me. But I try not to forget that somewhere out there the bullfrogs are still gulping.

Last Sunday was a delightful reminder, when I joined the St. Croix River Association’s 2015 Paddle Namekagon for a day. I saw young eagles flying and felt cold water on my skin and had a close call with some poison ivy (and it wouldn’t have been a true adventure if I didn’t get into just a little bit of trouble).

My canoeing partner called the Namekagon sacred, and I had

to agree. We live in a beautiful place, on an extraordinary planet. I took photos of the wild irises and horsetail, but they don’t do justice to the adventure or the calm that settled on the day.

Everyone has to experience that for themselves. That’s the idea behind the SCRA’s paddle and Vets on the River, a regional National Park Service program that brings veterans on paddle and pontoon trips (see related article in this issue). Whether veteran SEE LINDGREN, PAGE 16

Wisconsin priorities?

ov. Scott Walker is concerned that Wisconsin could lose $419 million over a 20year period if a new half-billion dollar professional basketball arena is not built in downtown Milwaukee. The National Basketball Association is threating to move the franchise out Matt Pommer of Milwaukee.

He is supporting

a plan that would eventually cost state taxpayers $80 million to pay off $55 million in bonds for the project. Milwaukee County would match that bonding level and the city of Milwaukee would build a parking structure. Past and current owners of the team would contribute $250 million.

The same day the governor unveiled the arena construction plan, the Hunger Task Force of Wisconsin and two Democratic legislators were urging a reversal of state decisions that led to reductions last

fall in the federal food stamp program for Wisconsin recipients.

Reversal of the Walker administration decision would provide an estimated $276 million in food purchases to 255,000 Wisconsin households annually. Unlike the basketball arena project, the increase could be achieved without any cost to state taxpayers through a reallocation of federal dollars provided to the state.

istory should not forgive those who leave little record of their life behind them. People of great events do great service to the near-present and far-away future if they leave a thoughtful and reflective record of the context in which they lived and formed the world in which they dwell. What actualColumnist ly happened? How did it come about?

Scholars try to answer these questions about the past. If no records survive that time, or few do, then historians and biographers sometimes leave critical gaps on the crux of an important story. Losing that personal context makes the story not only less revealing, but it can always become a detriment to someone who could have benefited from learning the points not known.

It should matter to all who live now to pass on to the future “who did what?” and “why did they do it?” We can learn from history, as philosophers says, but we cannot learn from anything about which we know nothing . Of course, scholars and others cover the big events in history, but they normally tell a

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wolf bounties in 1910 In light of the recent front page article in the Sun concerning the desired number of wolves in Wisconsin, your readers may be interested in data from the 1910 Official Proceedings of the County Board of Supervisors of Polk County. That year, a bounty of $10 each was paid for 90 wolves in the county, and $4 each was paid for 65 wolf cubs.

The 1941 Proceedings reported that bounties were paid only for crows and gophers. I had no point of view in offering this history. Just thought it was interesting.

Tick-borne diseases today Tick-borne diseases are on the rise with rare infections resulting in fatalities. Those of us who are living in this en-

similar story of humanity’s cruelty to itself. History in this age, as profession and hobby can change in an important way, to widen and broaden the human record.

How? By allowing the personal, and the mundane lives of individuals, share and show a story of the gifts each can contribute, to a spirit of humanity’s goodness to others. This covers, due to our technological opportunities,the person and family interested in their own journey on earth.

Our age, the early 21st Century, faces a surmountable dilemma. From the time of the ancient Greeks, beginning 2500 years ago, until 600 years ago and the advent of Western printing and wider-spread literacy, we have great story of the bigger events in history. However, we possess only large gaps in what we could usefully know about the history of real people; their record of daily toil, thoughts, feelings, their wisdom and the genesis of their inspirations. We do have monuments, buildings, and a few written records, but far less record that we could use today, now, to improve our wisdom.

In the digital age, the thought should scare us of a single catastrophe event, within the imaginable possibles, that would wipe out all of the records, even old records, stored electronically. And

how many records—personal photos, “blogs,” emails to family and friends—that historians would otherwise need to tell our story now, could become lost if no one has the means to read the code? A loss of some kind of all knowledge trusted to the domains of digits would amount to a million times more a catastrophe than the fire that destroyed the library of Alexandria.

Knowledge, and its convenience, could disappear by a flick of THE really big switch. Technology does so much service, even if we recognize the poor quality of social media-bytes as less than valuable contributions, compared to Homer’s “Illiad,” or “The Peloponnesian War” by Thucydides. Absolutely, we must recognize technology as a tool. Useful, yes, but less useful to reconstructing the past than a flint knife or a Dead Sea scroll. A dead computer, in a dead “code” language, and a cloud that might evaporate, would wipe our significance from our times.

Test a theory: Journal this summer, adults and kids, and write and illustrate a satisfying record of a very personal history. Reflect, create — think. It might become a joy, and it will survive like a Theban play from ancient Greece, a champion work that garlands a life story done well.

There is just too much to absorb alone, and questions you might have meant to ask, may be forgotten. When you are sick, this is extremely important.

To prevent Lyme disease following a possible tick bite, the prevailing standard is to prescribe a single, 200 mg. dose of doxcycline However, a careful examination of the single-dose trial

demonstrates this approach is not effective.

In addition, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis (two common co-infections) are not cured with a single dose of doxycycline.

Points on Lyme Disease testing must also be understood. Commercial tests are insensitive and may miss up to 75 percent of all Lyme disease cases, as demonstrated by a Johns Hopkins study done several years ago. Doctors may erroneously believe that the Lyme disease Western Blot results must meet the CDC’s criteria in order to be positive. The majority of people who

Our area Lyme Education and Support Group who meet in Amery the 4th Thursday of the month at 7p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on Cty. Rd. F. have test kits available from the IGenX Laboratory in Palo Alto, CA. Their technicians are trained to recognize the pathogens of tickborne diseases. Unlike other labs which run tests to look for hundreds of diseases every day, IGeneX test only for diseases they

know well. They offer their interpretation of their test results to help our doctors diagnose this disease. Handouts about this are also available at our meetings.

On Thursday evening, June 25, we will (again) be having Bradley Bush, a Naturopathic Doctor from Stillwater as our guest speaker.

This will be an informative presentation that includes the complexity of treating Lyme and the co-infections along with the use of antibiotics. The use of exercise will be explained a component, for it has been shown to be just as effective as antidepressants at reducing depression, and can increase brain levels of certain

neurotransmitters that are associated with energy, metabolism, and sleep.

And remember: Educate yourselves! It would be well worth while to spend time reading one or more of the various books on Lyme Disease that are available in your library. They are yours to borrow just for the asking.

stamps scaled back last year are seniors and people with disabilities living in subsidized housing, according to Sherrie Tussler, executive director of the Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee. “These vulnerable populations need community to help restore their Food Share benefits,” she added.

In an effort to reduce food stamp costs through the 2014 federal farm bill reauthorization, Congress changed requirements for its socalled “heat and eat” program for 16 participating states. Previously the program allowed low-income households to receive a boost in food stamps if they received at least $1 a month in low-income energy assistance.

The change imposed by Congress required the states to raise the contribution minimum to $20 per household in order for those recipients to continue to receive “heat and eat” food-stamp benefits. The underlying intent was to cut spending on food stamps as states dropped out of the program.

Except for Wisconsin, Michigan and New Jersey, the other participating states ignored the congressional threat and increased their allocation to $20. The Hunger Task Force said those changes have been bipartisan “with both Republican and Democratic governors and legislatures making the necessary changes.”

Walker, who is seeking to be the next president of the United States, declined to support the required increase; subsequently food-stamp aid was reduced for the estimated Wisconsin 225,000 households. The

cut amounted to $100 per month for some families.

“A family living in poverty can’t afford a $100 cut in their grocery budget,” said State Rep. David Bowen, D-Milwaukee. Restoring the cut would help many to get back on their feet, he said.

“Making this change is a no-brainer,” said State Rep. Jonathan Brostoff, D-Milwaukee, of reversing the Walker administration decision.

“Without spending a single extra dollar in state funds, we could bring in $276.3 million more in food stamps and help more than 255,000 Wisconsin households to make ends meet.”

The same sort of slamdunk confidence was exhibited by Walker as he championed putting state money into a new professional basketball arena.

“It’s not just a good deal,” the governor told a press conference. “It’s a really bad deal if we do nothing.” A podium sign proclaimed it is “Cheaper to Keep Them.”

Walker said the state would lose $419 million in revenues over two decades if the team moved.

Included in the state’s take would be the income tax paid by the millionaire professional basketball players and the wealthy team owners.

Not everyone was buying into Walker’s enthusiasm. The conservative group Americans for Prosperity criticized the plan, urging the GOP-controlled Legislature to reject it.

“The current deal is based on fuzzy math, complicated accounting and millions of taxpayer dollars,” said David Fladeboe, AFP Wisconsin state director.

Bernetta Gross

Bernetta Gross of Osceola died on Memorial Day, May 25, 2015. She was 83.

Bernetta Katherine was born Jan. 19, 1932, in Mott, N N.D. to Anton and Margar Rausch. She graduated ret f from St. James Academy, N New Rockford, ND. On June 15, 1950, she marr ried William A. Engels in N New Rockford, ND. They h had eight children. The f family moved to Osceola in t the early 1960’s. Years aft Bill’s death in 1971, she ter m married Arthur ‘Sonny’ G Gross Jr. on Nov. 2, 1984, at S Joseph Catholic Church St. i Osceola. in Bernetta worked for Osceola Area Schools in food services, and substituted in playground duty.

Bernetta loved her Catholic faith, playing bingo, Jeopardy, word searches, reading, plus gardening both vegetables and flowers.

She enjoyed going to Wildwood Flowers, the Osceola Public Library, and many area businesses.

Bernetta was preceded in death by her parents, husbands William A. Engels, Sr., Arthur ‘Sonny’ Gross Jr., son Anton ‘Tony’ Engels, daughter Margaret

‘Peggy’ Engels, brothers Paul Rausch, Julius Rausch, sisters Angeline Clemens, Rosella Klinger and two infant sisters.

do follow the God of the New Testament, we likewise (and no less) follow the God of the Old Testament. Our God does not change.

The Old Testament is the framework from which springs the New Testament. After all, if the Old Testament was not an essential and vital part of the revelation of Jesus Christ, His starting point of that revelation would have easily

begun as John begins his gospel, “In the beginning was the Word…”

John begins to explain the gospel by bringing us back to the beginning – with allusions to the beginning of the book of Genesis, John is able to help us to understand even more about how the world was created. The New Testament informs our understanding of the Old Testament. At the same time, and with

great regularity, the Old Testament informs our understanding of the New Testament.

Here is one example that I recently came across in my private studies.

Within our churches and different denominations we hear phrases like “I have been ransomed by Jesus Christ.”

CANVAS: ArtBarn hosts community classes FROM PAGE 1

doing art because there were no accessible art programs for adults in the community.

“For adults to be working with art, it’s so cool!” she said.

“I also wanted to help out the ArtBarn in the winter because we can’t do programming in there,” said Medcraft as she gestured to the primary ArtBarn space, which includes their iconic theater.

The painting class is instead hosted in a heated addition on the front of the building. Between 12 and 16 people usually attend each class which always begins at 6 p.m. and runs about two or three hours depending on the difficulty of the painting and the pace of the group. Each event is

advertised on the ArtBarn Facebook page, and people can sign up by commenting below the event post.

After the group arrives, there is a little introduction then everyone starts painting.

Medcraft paints stepby-step, and the class follows along.

“We paint and giggle and talk and listen to music. We usually rock out to the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s,” said Medcraft.

Then before the group disperses for home, Medcraft takes a group photo. “[Y]ou could come alone, or you could come with a group of people and you’re going to feel comfortable,” she said.

All of the art is original, though Medcraft admits she spends her free time getting fresh ideas from Pinterest.

“I love art and paintings; I gather ideas

from years of looking at and teaching art. I choose images that all, regardless of their skill level, will enjoy and have success [with],” she said.

Medcraft also hosts painting events for private parties such as wedding and baby showers.

In June, the ArtBarn also started hosting Clay at the ArtBarn.

Medcraft and co-teacher Cathy Oscarson, a local potter and teacher, run the class the same way as the painting class; $35 covers a beverage and all of the supplies needed to make a project out of clay. This class will be divided into two nights for a total of four hours.

“I just didn’t know it would take off as it has,” said Medcraft about both ArtBarn classes.

“It’s been really fun. …

And everybody can do it. That’s the best part.”

Study to shed light on health in Polk County A major public health project will focus in on Polk County families in 2015.

Approximately 550 Polk County households will be invited to participate in the University of Wisconsin’s Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW).

SHOW will meet with Polk families to learn about the real-time health issues they face. The project uses these profiles of health to help improve wellness in Wisconsin.

“Participating in this survey will

provide the health department and local medical centers valuable insight on important health information to allow for continued improvement on population health issues.” Polk County Health Department Officer Gretchen Sampson shares. “All this information allows us to take actions that will promote a healthy Polk County.”

“It’s not usually disaster relief,” said Wynne.

“They pick places in part of the community that need help, for whatever reason, fixing up their homes.”

The organization often chooses neighborhoods where elderly, handicapped or low-income people need help, said Angie Gehrman, who co-organizes the mission trip.

“We do repairs outside and in the houses,” she said, citing interior walls, decks, roofing, skirting of mobile homes and building handicap ramps as examples.

“We work on about 40 to 60 houses in each community,” she said. “And typically we work alongside residents. They don’t necessarily help us work, but they bring us

refreshments and socialize. That’s the relationship building aspect of it.

They have lunch with us and share in devotions if they want to.”

Groups that arrive together are split apart into work groups. Part of the experience, said Wynne, is meeting and working with people from across the country.

“There are 400 to 500 youth at each camp,” said Gehrman, “from five to fifteen churches. We take our group of 27 youth and five adults out there and our kids are split into crews with youth from around the country in groups of five, led by an adult. I’ll lead a group and I won’t have my kids, I’ll have kids from other churches.”

Youth from Peace Lutheran who plan to attend the mission trip typically volunteer on race day too, said Wynne, helping to organize, time

racers and hand out water. Gehrman is hoping the race draws 50 to 100 participants this year.

“Our first year we had 60,” she said. “Last year wasn’t so great because of the weather.” There was a thunderstorm on race day that likely deterred many.

But whether they have a few racers or many, Gehrman will be appreciative.

“Peace really appreciates the support of our community and congregation,” she said. “We do other fundraisers throughout the year too. … These trips would not be possible without the community support.”

The race will be held June 20, 9 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church. 2355 Clark Rd., Dresser. Racers can register in advance or the morning of the race, between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m.

COUNTY: Public health survey by UW-Madison will include 550 households in Polk County FROM PAGE 8

project from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison and is funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program. SHOW partners with local health departments and other organizations throughout the state to collect data and information on important health issues. In Polk County SHOW work will be hosted by several local agencies, including the Polk County Health Department in Balsam Lake.

“Our mission is to make new discoveries regarding the health and wellness of Wisconsin residents in the communities where they live,” said Kristen Malecki, co-director of SHOW. “We do this by thinking broadly about health and looking at many factors that impact our health — such as neighborhood en-

vironments and sleep habits. We also use state-of-the-art research tools to support novel and innovative research to identify opportunities for preventing disease, exploring new treatments and improving health care.”

SHOW will take a broad and deep look at health in Polk County. Survey topics include individual and family health history, community resources, access to health care, health behaviors, diet and many others. SHOW also takes physical measurements, including height, weight and blood pressure and asks participants to wear activity monitors for a week. Neighborhood locations are also included to better understand how where families live may impact health.

The SHOW study will begin to contact randomly selected Polk households in

June. SHOW will provide participants with a number of free health measurements and compensation of up to $100.

The SHOW has hired local residents to join the SHOW health data collection team, and they will be active in the county through the end of the year.

This year, SHOW is doing intensive work in four Wisconsin counties: La Crosse, Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Polk.

The research team will be inviting all eligible adults and children who live in selected houses to take part.

The SHOW research project has been running since 2008, and has a growing cohort of more than 4,000 Wisconsin residents. Research from the study has helped to make a number of important discoveries that can help to set priorities for improving health. The project recently measured and reported that

prescription drug use is on the rise in the state, with 55 percent of Wisconsinites prescribed at least one medication and 14 percent prescribed five or more medications. SHOW also monitors the availability of fresh foods through the state, and recently found that in some Wisconsin communities fast food is generally more accessible than fresh.

SHOW researchers have also found that access to parks and other green spaces is associated with better mental health, and that workers with daytime work schedules were less likely to be obese than those who work night shifts.

AMERICORPS: At Community Homestead, volunteers shape community and vice versa FROM PAGE 1

and weaving rugs to planting vegetables and picking berries with the coming of spring.

However, AmeriCorps Site Supervisor Christine Elmquist says the work of AmeriCorps volunteers extends beyond helping special-needs gardeners and crafters of Community Homestead.

AmeriCorps volunteers also serve the wider community of Osceola and the Twin Cities metro area.

“One of the service requirements of AmeriCorps is to do a volunteer project outside of the community and one within the community in an effort to bridge the wider community and nonprofits,” Elmquist said. “Our members do a lot more than one project, because they’re idealistic and very interested in serving all types of people and all types of events.”

Elmquist has lived as a member of Community Homestead for 20 years, during which time she has accepted more than 30 AmeriCorps volunteers.

AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the federal government and other donors.

Its purpose is to engage adults in intensive community service work. Besides building character, perks of the program include loan forbearance, or a freeze on student loan interest, as well as an education grant.

“We are very careful about who we take because this is a full immersion experience, not a job,” Elmquist said. “So the people that come here are really amazing.”

Chelsea Wagner speaks highly of her experience as a former Community Homestead AmeriCorps volunteer between 2007 and 2008.

“I found that it was a really great experience straight out of college to do something that wasn’t going to hurt my financial situation, but instead helped out my student loans,” Wagner said. “And it was a really handy way to take some time to explore life.”

Wagner now lives fulltime at the community with her husband and two boys.

Besides being a fun post-college experience, Wagner said the time she spent at Community Homestead shaped her plans for the future.

“The experience brought some clarity about what I wanted to

pursue in a job. And I think for some people it can show them what they don’t want to do which is also valuable,” Wagner said. “But I found that it definitely pointed me towards working with people, and that wasn’t initially my intention. I credit my AmeriCorps experience, and specifically my experience at Community Homestead, for pointing me down that path.”

Current AmeriCorps volunteer Parker Ameel has been at Community Homestead for more than nine months and describes similar life ex-

periences.

“I’ve learned a lot of social and time management skills from working with people in groups and in teams,” Ameel said. “I’ve really been able to take on a task and see it through from beginning to end.”

Ameel has taken part in several volunteer opportunities outside of Community Homestead, coaching the basketball skills team for Polk County Special Olympics, judging a local Destination Imagination competition and working on Habitat for Humanity projects.

Central Bank merged with MidWestOne Bank in May, becoming a publicly-traded company.

Central Bank merges with MidWestOne

Central Bank merged with MidWestOne, a financial group out of Iowa City, Iowa, in May. MidWestOne now owns both banks; the combined company is worth about $3 billion in assets, according to Larry Albert, Central Bank CEO. Previously an independently owned bank, Central will adopt MidWestOne’s structure of public ownership and publically traded shares as part of the shift. Staffing at the bank is expected to remain consistent, with adjustments happening primarily at top levels.

“John Morrison, who is the owner of Central Bank, will be chairman of the combined company,” said Albert prior to the merger, “but there’s a board of directors that will have representatives from MidWestOne and Central Bank. …

It’s ultimately managed by a board of directors [who are] elected by the shareholders, like all publically owned companies are.”

Based on his previous experience with mergers, Albert believes that most of the time the customer’s chief concern is “[if] the people are going to be there to help them that were there yesterday.”

To that he said, “The staff there, will be the staff there. It’s not a lot different from when the Central Bank acquired the RiverBank as part of the FDIC process a few years ago. Most of the faces of the bank are the same as they were then, and it will continue to be that way.”

Since acquiring the RiverBank, Central Bank has been very careful to maintain things the way they were. Albert believes it is important to keep the same faces in front of the customers because “this is a relationship business.”

“We’ve honored a

number of community philanthropic commitments and things like that when the Central Bank assumed ownership, and we’ve continued to be very supportive of community activities and those types of things, and that won’t change,” he said.

Nothing will change right away at the local level, but Albert expects that the name will eventually switch to MidWestOne. The timetable for this shift has not yet been determined, but he estimates it will take about a year.

Customers will be able to use up all of their old checks. When they would otherwise need to resupply, they will get checks with the new name and routing number printed on them.

The long transition period echoes that of Central Bank’s acquisition of RiverBank.

“It’s pretty much just a repeat of that process,” he said.

Albert went on to say, “There’s absolutely no reason to worry that there’s big changes coming or anything like that. … At the local level in Osceola, it’s just not going to be a real noticeable thing, especially right away, because it’ll still be Central Bank with just a different ownership structure at the bank level.”

The quilts are donated to the local food shelves, Serenity House, fire victims and other emergency situations. The children’s quilts go the San Lorenzo Medical Clinic in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, which is built on a dump and serves the poorest of the poor. With limited medications, sometimes the best and only ‘treatment’ is basic medication for fever and wrapping the child in a warm blanket.

Minnesota man caught with methamphetamine, paraphernalia A male walking w south on H Hwy. 63 had a Wisc consin State Patrol o cer stopping to offi m make sure he was o okay on June 1.

According to the p probable cause reSchrantz p port, the man said he was on his way to Hudson, although he was walking in Clayton and said he had just left the Turtle Lake Casino.

He said he wanted to leave and all the people he was with didn’t want to leave yet, so he left by himself. The man was James Schrantz, 53, Dundas, Minn.

The officer offered to give him a ride to Clayton, so he wouldn’t get hit by any vehicles. Schrantz said he appreciated the offer and accepted the ride.

The officer said he needed to search him prior to his entrance into the police car – this is a state patrol policy. He said he didn’t have anything on him, but did admit to having a pipe in his jacket pocket. A white sock was in his pocket and inside was a glass pipe with a bulb at the end used for smoking methamphetamine.

When asked if he had anything more, Schrantz hesitated, but said he had .75 grams of methamphetamine. A silver cylinder was found with one

gram of crystal methamphetamine inside. Both the pipe and substance tested positive.

Schrantz has four felony offenses on his record for fi fth degree drug possessions – methamphetamine and one felony offense for fourth degree for marijuana possession.

Schrantz was arrested for the possession of methamphetamine and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Man threatens neighbors with axe A neighbor of Thomas Letourneau, 62, called the St. Croix Falls Police Department a about Letourn neau’s snow blowe which had been er, r running of several h hours, on June 6.

The officer walked over to the property and turned off the snow blower and saw Letourneau around the corner, inside the garage, with a sledgehammer or axe. He was holding the weapon in a threatening manner.

Stepping back, the officer ordered him to drop the weapon, at gunpoint. Letourneau didn’t immediately comply, but he did eventually drop the axe.

Woman kidnapped in Baldwin During the evening hours of June 3, 2015 a kidnapping occurred from the Nolato Contour business located at 660 Vandeberg St. in the Village of Baldwin.

A male subject, identified as Daniel J O’Keefe, 50 of New Richmond had gained entry into his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle where she works. The ex-girlfriend, KMD, 50, Menomonie, works at Nolato Contour where O’Keefe also worked.

KMD left work and started for her residence in Menomonie. On her way she stopped at a gas station in Baldwin then proceeded east on I-94.

After a few miles on the interstate a male subject popped up from behind her. She hit the brakes and the male told KMD to keep driving.

Stanley woman arrested for possession of methamphetamine, paraphernalia A St. Croix Falls Police officer was called to the Holiday g gas station for a p possible domestic d disorderly conduct c case in a white p pickup truck on J June 7.

According to the p probable cause Schaff S h ffner report, a male was shouting at a female inside the truck. The male was asked for his ID and the female, who turned out to be Theresa Schaffner, 28, Stanley, left the truck and began walking towards the gas station. The officer shouted to Schaffner to stop and return to the vehicle. She said she needed to use the restroom.

The officer said he needed to

speak with her and Schaffner ran into the gas station. The officer stayed with the male until he found his license, which turned out to be expired. When asked what the shouting was about, the male said Schaffner had lost a $20 bill that they were supposed to use for gas.

A deputy arrived at the scene and the officer had him stay with the male, while they went into the station to locate Schaffner.

There was a line at the women’s restroom and an employee waiting to check the room when Schaffner left. The officer instructed them not to let anyone else in the bathroom after Schaffner came out.

The officer returned to the vehicle where a device was found to store and smoke marijuana.

Eventually Schaffner came out of the gas station and met the officer in the parking lot.

Her story matched the male’s story as far as why they were arguing.

An employee motioned for the officer to come inside the station once again and she said there was blood on the floor and a syringe in the garbage can. When asked about it, Schaffner wouldn’t answer any of the questions; however she was bleeding on the back of both hands and had blood on her shirt.

Schaffner was arrested for the possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia and obstruction.

A great season comes to a close

Results: Osceola lost in round one of the WIAA Division 2 Baseball tournament 4-1 to the Barron Bears in action last Thursday night.

What it means: The loss is the end of the season for Osceola. Bar-

ron faced Somerset and lost 6-1 to the Spartans to end their season as well. Somerset moves into Sectional action this week.

Highlights: Barron scored early to take a 4-0 lead by the third inning, a lead they would never relinquish. Ethan Freese started for the Chieftains and despite a good performance the Bears were

able to score a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings.

Tyler Maxon came in on relief in the middle of the fourth inning but the damage was done and the Chieftains could not make it happen on offense. The Chieftains’ season had its ups and downs but they were in every game and played like champions.

Battling big bulls

T

he sky was as blue as a robin’s egg with white wisps of clouds moving briskly overhead aided by a westerly wind that was putting a nice walleye chop on the water. The only problem was there were no walleye in this lake. This lake was loaded with pike, crappie, largemouth bass and big bluegills.

In fact, a friend stopped to show me his limit of 25 sunnies that ran from 9 to 11 inches, 3/4 of a 5-gallon bucket.

He had caught those big gills in 9 feet of water on crawlers. I have no problems following directions that Wild River put fish on the table. That is what this fishing trip was all about. He Trails also mentioned that he had taken Jim Bennett the fish across the lake from the boat launch. It all sounded too easy so after a stop at the bait shop we were on our way.

The launch at this little lake is shallow and loaded with firm muddy clay that oozes between your toes when we pulled our kayaks into the water. You could launch a fishing boat here but mostly lake homeowners are seen in boats here. Only ice fisherman hit this lake with any consistency and even they number few and far between. To make matter worse, the launch is in the weediest bay and there was only a slim corridor of water to snake a kayak through.

Josh got to the other side of the lake first and was

into small sunnies and bass right off the bat. Nancee also nailed some smaller bass but they both found that the westerly wind was making fishing on the wind side of the lake more work than either wanted to deal with. I let the wind blow me across the lake as I rigged up and arrived at the “secret spot,” but we weren’t there long.

Josh and I paddled to calmer waters while Nancee worked the wind side of the lake along the shoreline heading west. Josh put on a wacky worm rig and caught some average bass before he hooked and lost a 16” largemouth. I put on my new go-to lure for pan fish, a Power Bait Ripple Shad, and picked up a smaller crappie trolling. As I worked into the shallows I spotted many old abandoned spawning beds and sent in a Ripple Shad on the back sides of the weeds. It got hit with a vengeance!

The fish took off on a line as if it had been struck by lightning. The medium lite fishing rod took on a new bend as I held my own as the fast fish fled for weeds. I turned it with the 4-pound line stretching and saw it was a big male bluegill. It was patrolling the weed line still thinking spawn but most of that activity seemed to have ended. During the battle I noticed three more big bull bluegills swimming with the one now on my stringer but the fight had taken me too close to the old spawning grounds and they disappeared into thick weeds.

The St. Croix Falls Saints baseball team has a lot to celebrate this season. Although the team lost in the s sectional semi-final round, the victories d during the 2015 season are something to b proud of. be Chequamegon High School from the P Park Falls area proved to be a tough opp ponent and they defeated the Saints 4-2 i semi-final action in Cumberland last in T Tuesday.

Brady Leahy started on the mound for S St. Croix Falls and went four full innings b before Jacob Jacobson came in to finish tthe last three innings.

“Chequamegon is an excellent team,” C Coach Jacobson said. “Their pitcher did a an excellent job competing throughout Koshiol K hi l tthe course of the game, throwing 141 p pitches on the day. He deserves a lot of credit for our lack of offensive producc ttion.”

The Eagles took an early lead with two rruns in the top of the second inning and o one run in the third. St. Croix Falls beg gan a march to catch up with a Jacob J Jacobson RBI in the bottom of the third Peters inning putting Leahy across home plate ffor the first Saints run.

Chequamegon scored again in the top of tthe fifth and St. Croix Falls matched that rrun in the bottom of the same inning.

A Although the Saints defense held strong tto finish the game, offense put the ball in p play but was unable to score to stay in the ttournament.

Johnson Durand faced Chequamegon next in the tournament and suffered the same fate as the Saints and the Eagles have moved on to the state tournament with a 4-2 win over Durand.

With the end of the season come accolades and St. Croix Falls received several.

Senior, Jacob Jacobson (C/P) was named the West Lakeland Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

In addition to All-Conference honors, Jacob Jacobson was chosen as a representative of the West AllStar team for the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic to be played in Oshkosh on June 26-27. Jacob will be attending UW-Superior next fall where he signed a letter of commitment earlier this spring to play baseball and pursue a degree in Education.

“I am extremely proud of this team,” Coach Jacobson said. “They gave it their best effort, and at the end of the day that is all you can ask of your players.”

Tough week starts strong

lure between the weeds and shoreline and took a half dozen more big fish, including one nice jumbo perch that seemed a little out of its element.

I ran into Nancee and although she had taken some nice bass, the big bluegills had eluded her live bait approach.

Shortly after that Josh came over and showed us we were both using the wrong technique.

“I hate using live bait,” he said. “I don’t know why I use it. I switched to my fly rod and a large foam spider and those bigger bluegills tore it up.” He raised his stringer and we both smiled at the 10 or so big bluegills he was taking home. “I caught lots of fish and lost a couple bruisers

that may have gone 10 inches or more. I felt guilty keeping a couple of these; they are so big and beautiful!”

And they were just that. Not your normal colored bluegills these fish were more of hybrid that I have only seen in this lake. Big yellow bellies and fins trimmed in bright golden hues, including the back of the dorsal that seemed longer than your average bluegill.

Along with the aqua blue, almost teal bars that marked the flanks made these a gorgeous trophy bluegill that would also make a great meal.

Pitching proved to be the sticking point in a week filled with league games.

The Osceola Braves simply ran out of gas by the end of the week and will look for ways to shore up the pitching staff.

The Braves began on Wednesday with a win on the road against Menomonie 6-3. Friday night Osceola hosted the Hudson River Rats and lost 3-0.

The team went back on the road and it proved heartbreaking with a 11-1 loss against Ellsworth.

The win against Menomonie started the week on a positive note.

According to Paula Blum, one of the Woodhill Bar and Grill’s new owners, they will have a variety of events throughout the summer including volleyball, beanbags, meat raffles, bon fires and live music. Local DJ Aaron Skow is hosting karaoke on Thursday nights. Blum and Tim Woller just reopened the Woodhill this year and appreciate the community’s support for new owners.

Radio, a local band, playing on various Friday and Saturday nights.

In Farmington, Ken’s Keyboard will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary this September. In the meantime they will have live music on certain Friday and Saturday nights over the summer.

Blake Berger got things going in the bottom of the first with his first home run of the season.

“Berger’s hit was a shot to left field scoring Dave Measner,” Tetzlaff said.

“Dettmann followed with his first home run of the season with a long home run in the bottom of the second to right field.”

The Braves scored two at the top of the first inning and never looked back.

“We believe that tonight you saw what this team is capable of,” Tetzlaff said. “Good pitching, sound defense and offensive power.”

The hope was to carry the momentum over to the weekend with the schedule filled with backto-back league games.

Friday night Osceola faced a tough Hudson team but they faced an even tougher umpire.

The first two runs made

by Hudson put Tetzlaff out on the field contesting the calls.

“We were on the short end of some very controversial calls and this

seemed to take a toll on us,” Tetzlaff said. “Take nothing away from Hudson, they are very talented and should have a successful season.”

It is tough for a team to take that kind of controversy and rise above it.

The Braves were unable to push on offensively and make things happen at the plate.

“It was a frustrating night in many areas,” Tetzlaff said. “We hit some very hard shots but they were right at the Hudson outfielders, who are very fast and chased down some well hit baseballs.”

The trouble followed on the road the next day.

or civilian, unmediated experiences and connecting to life at its source breathes whatever healing we need into us. Nature meets us where we are.

We were built as part of the natural world, and simply existing in it triggers something primal and life affirming in most, if not all, of us. The dragonflies and bullfrogs, irises and bluettes are the real workings of life. So it’s strange that getting outside for a day often feels like a fantasy.

Jobs and bank accounts and houses are all real too.

But when you can unplug and get away, the pull of that world isn’t as strong.

When we got to the landing, I wasn’t ready to go back.

Yes, there’s substance to the “real world.” It helps us survive and live comfortably. There’s electricity and medicine. Inventions like the Internet connect us to one another and answer our questions, burning or trivial. I wouldn’t want to give these things up, but they’re hard to touch. You can’t swim in them. They won’t take flight and land on your shoulder.

And so I’ll just remind myself that the cogs and wheels of life continue to swim and buzz and hatch and grow and die, all while I’m checking my email.

VETERANS: Healing with wilderness FROM PAGE 1

watched the river give veterans a new sense of purpose and reengage with their communities.

He’s seen it bring families back together after a parent returns from deployment.

He also knows that those things come in their own time.

“When we first get out there’s always a lot of military banter, guys laughing and picking on each other,” says Butler.

“That usually goes on for a little bit, but then it’s just gone and people are having fun, laughing, splashing each other. Some of them go off on their own and we let them.

“Nobody said if you sign up for this you have to spill your guts,” he continues. “We just take them out and let the river do its magic. Nobody has to talk to them. It just kind of happens, naturally. I’ve seen it.”

When Butler helped organize the first paddle, a trip down the Namekagon for female veterans, he didn’t know that it would become a job. A Vietnam-era veteran himself, Butler had worked with vets through Outward Bound and guided wilderness treks with Northwest

Passage. So when Branda Thwaits, an interpretive ranger for the National Park Service along the Namekagon, needed help bringing vets to the river, she contacted Butler.

“Branda wanted to know if I had any suggestions for getting veterans on the river,” says Butler. “I said, ‘Let’s do a women vets paddle.’ The guys have hunting trips, we wear the hats and t-shirts. Women vets are kind of invisible. They slip back into their role in society.”

About 12 women signed up for that first paddle, and left rejuvenated and enthusiastic about the new program.

“Branda said it worked so well I should apply for a job with the NPS,” says Butler. “I applied for the interpreter job in 2012 and was hired. That gave us the chance to really develop [the program].”

Butler says the reason the program is a success today is because they started with women veterans.

“It started strong,” he says. “The women vets went back into their counties and spread the word. Now the first program we plan every year is a women vets paddle.

This year the women have taken it a step further and are going to

placed around her neck.

After about 2.5 hours of driving on backcountry roads she recognized the voice as belonging to her ex-boyfriend O’Keefe.

Eventually KMD told O’Keefe that she was hungry and needed a restroom. O’Keefe told KMD to go to the Kwik Trip located at 6107 3M Drive in Menomonie.

The two entered the store together and KMD stated that she forgot her money in the car. KMD noticed two Menomonie Police Officers at the Kwik Trip and went for help.

Menomonie officers secured the scene and contacted St. Croix County.

Baldwin Police responded to the scene. In the vehicle was a black duffle bag. In this bag two handguns and several other items were located including an object that appears to be an oil filter silencer.

O’Keefe was ultimately questioned and told officers that he devised a plan to make KMD talk to him. On June 1, O’Keefe states he collected items such as several pieces of rope, zip ties, and two handguns. On June 3, he drove to KMD’s place

of employment, took his bag and entered KMD’s vehicle.

O’Keefe was arrested and transported to the St. Croix County jail on several charges including Kidnapping –use of a dangerous weapon, false Imprisonment – use of a dangerous weapon (two counts), first degree reckless endangering safety – use of a dangerous weapon, attempt strangulation and suffocation, possession of firearm silencer, pointing a firearm at another and disorderly conduct, domestic abuse assessments.

For further details into this incident a copy of the criminal complaint can be obtained from the St. Croix County District Attorney’s Office.

There is an on-going investigation by the Baldwin Police Department and St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect is currently incarcerated and there is no reason to believe that the public is in any danger.

“Once we got the women vets going I went to Hayward,” says Butler.

“A woman there knew some Iraq vets in a support group who were interested in doing a paddle.”

The trips have fostered connections between different generations of veterans, expanding to include Honor Cruises for vets who can’t paddle.

“Somewhere along the line I heard we had a pontoon,” says Butler, “and I said to Branda, let’s do this right. We’ll take them out to the Stillwater Islands on Honor Rides.”

Butler recruited Bob Whaley, a retired army major and NPS law enforcement ranger living in Osceola, to steer the boat.

“Everybody loves Bob Whaley,” says Butler. “I call him Captain Bob and he says, ‘Well actually, Jeff, I was a major.’”

Butler and Whaley have brought veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam on Honor Cruises. They’ve also done rides for vets with

traumatic brain injuries and homeless vets.

“It just kept evolving,” says Butler of the program.

This year, the paddle trips have expanded to Polk, Burnett, Washington and Chisago counties. The counties are paired for the year, but that could change depending on response.

“Maybe we get a few from each county,” says Butler, “and next year we say Washington County can have its own paddle.”

Butler sees bringing veterans to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway as service come full circle.

“So many of us enlist-

ed to serve and protect,” he says. “So why don’t we come back to the riverway to see what we served and protected?

Especially the riverway.

Some veterans have never had the opportunity to just get out there and experience the quiet, or do anything like it. … The river inspires people.”

New owners, manager plan weekend festival at Chateau St. Croix

Local wine producer Chateau St. Croix Winery is gearing up for its annual festival, Fete de Fleurs, this weekend. New general manager Matt Scott, most recently of St. Croix Vineyards, shared more about the event and how the business is faring.

Q: What can attendees expect at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fete?

A: We will host about 10 artisans, three local food vendors and Hammerschalgen near our beer and wine tent. Enjoy local beer by the glass. As in past years, we will have the big tent with music and places to sit as well as the patio canopy if it decides to sprinkle during the day. We have live music both days: Saturday Croix Daddy will play from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. David Ybarra and the Northside Dukes will be on stage. Sunday we have St. Croix Crossings from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and from 2:30 to 5:00 pm enjoy listening to the Stude-

A: It was a hard decision to leave St. Croix Vineyards after being general manager for 8.5 years; it is a wonderful winery and the owners and staff are all close friends. My wife and I live near Taylors Falls and are expecting our first child in August of this year, so I needed to find work closer to home.

MEDITATION: The riddle of Psalms, reading the Old Testament with the New Testament in mind FROM PAGE 7

paid my ransom with his life.â&#x20AC;? Liturgies, creeds, and confessions are filled with theological truths akin to this profession.

From where does this confessional truth of Jesus Christ as our ransom come? Origen (many call him an early church father) is said to have been the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;championâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of this truth, but I suggest to you that this truth comes from something much earlier than the man named Origen.

The New Testament has no shortage of references to the idea that Christ is our ransom.

Jesus teaches us this in Matthew 20:28 (c.f. Mark 10:45). Paul proclaims this truth to Timothy

in 1 Timothy 2:6. Peter teaches us this in 1 Peter 1:18. Even John, as he is recording the revelation from God the Father, is reminded of the veracity of the ransom of Jesus Christ in Revelation 5:9.

At first glance we may be inclined to think, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;this is all I need to know about being ransomed.

Jesus has ransomed me with His life! What more could we hope to learn of this truth? After all, the New Testament seems to do a good job at explaining it!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s take a look at what Psalm 49 teaches us about the idea of ransom.

Psalm 49 starts by calling all people to listen (that includes you and me), â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hear this, all peoples! Give ear, all inhab-

itants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together!â&#x20AC;?

The Psalmist continues by presenting a riddle for the reader (see vs 3). In verse 7 the riddle is in full form (a riddle that we must also wrestle with). The Psalmist writes, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Truly no man can ransom another or give to God the price of his lifeâ&#x20AC;?. This, at first glance, flies in the face of what we understand as our salvation in Jesus Christ. Indeed, if we believe Christ is our ransom (which seems to be an orthodox confessional belief), then we must wrestle Psalm 49:7.

The Psalmist goes out of his way to explain that no amount of wealth and no person can ever

ransom another person.

Truthfully, this makes sense. How can we expect another person to be justly forgiven because of a ransom?!

The truth that I was really struck by, comes later in the Psalm (the resolution and answer to the riddle). After the Psalmist has adequately laid out his riddle (how can anyone then be forgiven?), he resolves it with this simple phrase, â&#x20AC;&#x153;But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol (hell), for he will receive me.â&#x20AC;?

Only when you understand that man cannot ransom another man can you truly appreciate what the New Testament is saying about Jesus.

while Chateau St. Croix Winery is 11 years old. St. Croix is a great farm winery in Stillwater while Chateau is a European chateau winery in the rolling hills of St. Croix Falls.

Q: How is this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crop looking?

A: Every site has a unique microclimate.

This year looks to be on track to produce a great crop. Many local grape growers are reporting healthy vines, and flowering is either happening or will within the next two weeks. The Chateau is further north, so our vines will not flower for

another 10-12 days.

Q: Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your favorite Chateau St. Croix wine so far?

A: I enjoy our new blend of Marquette and Cab Franc. We bottled it recently and it is a wonderful blend of local and California grapes. We have been bottling ports lately and will have three

different ports available for the festival.

Q: Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the fiveyear plan for Chateau?

A: To double our production, start to wholesale our wines in Minnesota, build a new events room onto the back of the Chateau and increase our staff to support our growth.

Weekly St. Croix River programs The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, a unit of the National Park System, is offering weekly programs via pontoon boat on the St. Croix River on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this summer.

Presentations will explore the natural history

of the Stillwater Islands area north of Stillwater and the interactions that people have had with the river through time.

These programs are free and open to adults and children 13 and over.

Reservations are required due to space limitations and are limited

n the first real hot day recently, I wrestled with the thought of turning on the air-conditioning.

If it weren’t for the humidity, I wouldn’t have even considered it. We turned on fans to circulate the air, closed the windows and turned on the dehumidifier and hoped that would be the magical mix until sundown.

As the heat persisted, the thought of dinner troubled me. Heat has a way of sucking the life out of you. I had been working in the yard for hours and could barely drag myself up the 14 steps to the front door, each step as if my legs were made of Jell-O. My son and I set to work on a new recipe for cold almond cauliflower soup with a cold broccoli salad, and for dessert cold mango gazpacho.

Preparing everything from an uncooked cold state was an easy meal. All three things took the two of us only 15 minutes—score! However, cauliflower soup was not the greatest, but not a recipe worthy of a food column. The mango gazpacho on the other hand was wonderful. My son has been asking me to make it every day since. It’s rare to have a recipe that is so simple, tastes amazing and is healthy. It’s as if the stars aligned and shot a beam of magical cooking rays to my brain—I wish it would happen more often.

With the air conditioner on—yes, I conceded, a cold shower, and a bowl of dessert soup, I was feeling better, I could stand without falling over.

Cold Mango Gazpacho Soup Serves 4 3 cups cold mango juice (unsweetened or sweetened with fruit juice) 1 mango, divided 1 banana Juice of one fresh lemon 2 tablespoons chia seeds ½ cup vanilla yogurt, for garnish

In a blender, blend juice, banana, and ¾ of the mango cut into chunks, until smooth. Add lemon juice and blend for a few more seconds. Pour into a large bowl. Sprinkle chia seeds over the soup and stir in.

The seeds may sit on top of the soup. Let the soup sit for about 10 minutes for the seeds to expand, thickening the soup. Stir again and let soup sit for another 15 minutes in the refrigerator. Chop the remaining mango into small pieces and add to the soup. Garnish with a dollop of vanilla yogurt. Refrigerate any unused soup.

Barbershop winners

Four Score, a barbershop quartet from St. Croix Falls High School, recently won the 1st Annual Wisconsin State High School Barbershop Men’s Division contest held at Silver Lake College in Manitowac, Wis. on May 30. The contest is sponsored in part by the Barbershop Harmony Foundation International organization and the Manitowac Barbershop Chapter. To qualify for the event, quartets must have received a first rating at the WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Association) sponsored state festival. Four Score — comprised of seniors Mark Wampfler, Henry Klein, Jay Forsman and Alex King — received an almost perfect score card at the state festival in Eau Claire on an original arrangement composed by Wampfler. The arrangement, entitled “A Sesame Street Medley,” received accolades from one of the judges. Four Score took home the Schmitt Family traveling trophy, named after a well-known barbershop family who were featured in the Hollywood production of “The Music Man.”

State honors project

Four students from St. Croix Falls high and middle schools have been accepted to the Wisconsin State Music Association honors project. A competitive audition is held annually in Eau Claire for schools in the northern half, but students compete with all auditions throughout the state. More than 3,000 students in grades 6-11 audition to join one of the project’s seven ensembles. Left to right: Addie McCurdy will be participating for a second time in the state honors project. This year she was selected into the high school treble choir. First time participant Oliva Peer will also sing in the high school treble choir. Katherine Herrick is performing a second time in the project, this time in the high school honors band (trumpet). Seth Gudmunsen will represent SCF middle school in the Middle Level honors mixed choir.
