France Lavin Design: Staircase of Passion

Led to Success

Designing an interior demands creativity, resilience, and innovation. France Lavin has aced the art of crafting interiors with her out-of-the-box thinking. Her journey was much like a blank canvas waiting for the first brush stroke of discovery, transformation, and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. France did not receive any formal education in interior design. Her path to becoming a distinguished designer was driven by inherent talent and an eye for potential.

France’s story began in Fairfield, Connecticut, where she studied business and marketing. Despite getting her formal education in these fields, she found herself inclined towards design. “Designing has always come naturally to me,” France admits. Her natural ability to envision the potential of space led her to redesign homes for family and friends just for fun. The year 1990 proved to be the turning point when she purchased a home in Naples, Florida. Professionals suggested to demolish the structure but she saw an opportunity to breathe new life into it.

The best thing was France was not ready to give up. To fill the gap she enrolled in evening architecture classes at the University of Chicago. France was balancing motherhood and a career in marketing during the day in addition to that she spent her evenings understanding the complexities of design proportions and plans. Slowly but surely confidence replaced hesitation. Soon, she started charging for her services and the response was overwhelming. As her aspirations flourished she laid the foundation of France Lavin Design.

She introduced elegant trellises, climbing bougainvillea, and classic French doors. Her imagination and creativity transformed the house into a Mediterranean Key West fusion masterpiece. “The final result was nothing short of breathtaking,” France confirmed. Her work was so great that Naples “N” Magazine (formerly GulfShore Life) knocked on her door, eager to feature her work. This turned out to be the defining moment just like a lighthouse cutting through the fog illuminating the path she was destined to follow.

France has an undeniable talent for designing but she was hesitant to turn her passion into a profession. Her father and her best friend encouraged her to pursue her passion full-time. They recognized her unique ability to see beyond the ordinary and transform spaces into extraordinary works of art. Yet she was hesitant as she feared that without formal training she might not have the technical skills required.

France has an experience of 25 years working on both coasts. She has carved out a niche in the world of interior design with her distinctive modern classical style that is filled with nature-inspired designs. “I like to bring the outside into the interior spaces,” she explains. Whether it’s a flourishing estate or a boutique cafe her designs did justice to every project complementing their surroundings rather than competing with them.

The services at France Lavin Design are extensive.

• Residential Designs: Tailored home interiors that blend personal style with functionality.

• Boutique & Hospitality Design: Chic and inviting spaces for restaurants, cafes, and small hotels.

• Green Design: Sustainable, ecofriendly, solutions that merge with contemporary aesthetics seamlessly.

• Space Planning: Includes Layouts, furniture placement, ceiling, and window concepts.

• Project Management: A start-tofinish approach ensuring seamless execution.

• Consultation Service: Expert guidance on ongoing projects, paint selections, and finishing touches.

Her approach emphasizes that every project maintains flow by emphasizing discovery instead of following strict rules. She crafts spaces that reflect elegance and warmth by utilizing natural materials and sober color palettes.

According to France designing is not about leaving her imprints on spaces rather it is about creating one that resonates with her clients. She encourages a collaborative approach, unlike many designers who maintain strict creative control. “It is their home, after all,” she remarks, emphasizing that designing should be an enjoyable phase rather than an intimidating one.

Before starting a project France opts for an in-person consultation, where she tries to understand the client’s needs, lifestyle, and aspirations. “Many first-time customers are nervous,” she admits. “I reassure them that the process should be as fun as it is rewarding.”

The Art of Leadership in Design

France’s meticulous approach to leadership and organization is the basis of elegance and creativity. She relies on comprehensive spreadsheets to manage the minute details of each project, where she keeps track of everything from material selection to project timelines.

“ A designer’s success is in the details,” she shares. “There are so many moving parts, and organization is key.”

Understanding the market is another crucial element. France confirms that staying updated on the latest trends, materials, and innovations is non-negotiable. To keep her knowledge about the latest trends on point she relies on industry associations like the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) and frequent visits to design showrooms. “You have to see, touch, and experience the latest trends firsthand. A picture on a screen doesn’t convey the full story.”

Embracing Digital Era

France recognizes the power of social media in engaging with past and present clients, though she was late to the social media game. However, she doesn’t rely on it for business, she just enjoys sharing her work and keeping her audiences informed. She now has a virtual assistant which helps her maintain her active presence, allowing her to focus on her design work.

As a successful woman entrepreneur, France understands the significance of representation in the industry. She understands and emphasizes the importance of recognizing one’s own talent. “Know your market, do your research, and trust in your skills. It’s not necessary to have all the answers. What matters is your ability to find solutions,” she advises aspiring designers.

France does not see her competitors as a threat rather she embraces companionship with fellow designers. “We all have different visions, and that’s what makes this industry so dynamic. Some shy away from engaging with their competitors, but I find value in building relationships. We share knowledge, resources, and even stories.”

France is excited about the evolution of the industry, she is particularly looking forward to the integration of AI. She acknowledges the utility of AI but also emphasizes the importance of human touch for true creativity. “AI can assist, but it cannot replace vision. It can analyze patterns, but it cannot feel the soul of a space. Designers must remain innovative and think outside the box,” she asserts.

France Lavin’s journey from an untrained enthusiast to a nationally recognized interior designer is no less than proof of the power of passion, perseverance, and willingness to learn. Her story is an inspiration for aspiring designers and entrepreneurs. Her story proves that talent when nurtured with dedication can lead to extraordinary achievements.

With her continuous efforts to craft spaces with a blend of beauty and functionality one thing is certain, France Lavin is not only designing homes, she is curating experiences, memories, and a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Jessi Grow by Sto

OWNER/PRINCIPLE

Taking Chicago orm

DESIGN CITY

Chicago has been the inspiration for some of the sharpest minds in US architectural history, from the pre-eminent urban planner Daniel Burnham to the great Frank Lloyd Wright. For Jessica Cane, owner and principal designer of Parti Pris Design, the city was the perfect setting to launch a boutique interior design firm after moving to Wright’s old stomping ground of Oak Park, in the city’s Western suburbs.

“In Chicago, architecture and innovation are everywhere you look,” she says. “They go hand in hand here.”

With Parti Pris, which she founded three years ago, Jessica has carved out a niche in the city’s design scene for creating spaces that are both inspiring and functional. While her career has been rooted in creativity, after 15 years working in the luxury wholesale fashion industry, her entry into the design world was anything but conventional.

FROM FASHION TO INTERIORS

For 15 years, Jessica worked in fashion showrooms across the world in a career that took her to London, Hong Kong and New York. “I worked worldwide in the luxury wholesale fashion industry,” she says.

After moving to Chicago in 2018, however, it was time to pivot. “It became clear that continuing in fashion with two small children and frequent travel wasn’t feasible,” she recalls.

The move into design was both logical and organic. After buying a house that needed significant renovation, Jessica was struck by the similarities between fashion and interiors.

“The process of selecting colors, finishes, and working with wholesalers felt natural,” she explains. “I also found joy in spatial planning.”

Her next step was to join a local design firm. Then, after polishing her skills, Jessica launched her own venture. She named it “Parti Pris,” a French expression which, in architectural terms, refers to a big idea or central concept behind a project. As a Francophile, it felt like the perfect fit.

DESIGNING THE WORLD WITH PARTI PRIS

Three years on, Parti Pris is a full-service interior design company with a global reach. The firm works with clients both across the US and internationally, offering an array of services ranging from initial concept development to project execution.

“Communication is the most important thing,” she says. “Clients are busy, so I ensure they’re always informed without having to check in.”

Jessica’s client-focused ethos ensures that every project reflects the homeowner’s style. However, she’s also not afraid to push the boundaries, while respecting her client’s preferences.

“My job is to guide them toward loving their space,” she says. “If they are not happy, I’ll dial it back.”

Jessica’s design philosophy draws on both her experience in fashion and her love of global travel. Still, her core focus remains on clientled designs. “I identify their style and taste, working within those parameters while introducing elements of color and texture,” she explains.

When asked about that one special project, Jessica insists that each project offers an opportunity to learn and innovate. She takes pride in every accomplishment, from executing her clients’ visions to inspiring them to explore new possibilities.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

To be a leader in design requires problem-solving, communication, and project management skills. “Rarely does a project go exactly as planned,” Jessica admits.

“The key is adapting and finding solutions quickly. Strong communication between vendors, contractors, and clients is essential.”

Jessica’s commitment to staying ahead of industry trends is also a central component of her leadership approach. She has developed a deep network of design peers, mentors, and vendors, who she calls her ‘design buddies.’ Together they attend industry events like High Point Market in North Carolina – the Superbowl of interior design- and share the latest insights and innovations.

Of course, Jessica also credits Chicago’s vibrant design scene: “My vendors are invaluable, introducing me to new products and styles. And living in Chicago offers access to incredible resources like the Merchandise Mart and vintage furniture stores.”

BALANCING ACT

Juggling a thriving business and a busy personal and family life is a delicate balancing act. “Work-Life balance? What is that? I am constantly striving for it,” jokes Jessica. She acknowledges the importance of setting boundaries to avoid burnout but also admits that this is very much a work in progress. She aims to strike that balance while continuing to pour her heart into her designs.

Jessica’s candor about her struggles certainly makes her relatable to aspiring entrepreneurs facing similar challenges. Her advice to them is simple yet powerful: “Work hard and hustle. Gain experience wherever you can, and don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know. You will be amazed at how many people are willing to mentor you.”

BOUNDARIES

Often considered male-dominated, the construction industry can be difficlt to navigate as a woman. Dealing with chauvinism can be a regular occurrence. For instance, she recalls being asked to run errands unrelated to her role.

“It’s important to establish boundaries,” she emphasizes. “I make it clear that my scope of work is design-focused. Once roles are defined, collaborations become seamless.”

This approach has earned her respect in the industry and offers an example for women in the field dealing with similar challenges.

WOMEN IN DESIGN: BUILDING BRIDGES, NOT WALLS

Having attended an all-women college, Jessica is a passionate proponent of collaboration over competition and a strong advocate of female empowerment. She works with female architects, designers, and other professionals, creating a network built on mutual support. “I love working with women-led companies, from architects to cabinet designers. Supporting other designers is also vital. There is enough work to go around.”

THE FUTURE OF PARTI PRIS DESIGN

Looking ahead, Jessica envisions continued growth for Parti Pris Design. “I hope to keep growing and perfecting my process so that every project runs smoother and smoother,” she says.

Jessica Cane’s journey to get this far, from her beginnings in the fashion industry to her present crafting exquisite interiors, proves the power of reinvention and perseverance and highlights how important it is to be adaptable and willing to learn. Her journey also serves as an inspiration for women in all lines of business.

AISHAH COLEMAN

AC DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

Aishah Coleman: Transforming the Architecture and Interiors Industry

Aishah has a background in architecture and has earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture. She wanted to become an architect because she wanted to help rebuild City Bronx as a child of the 1970s and 1980s. When Aishah started her business, she went back to the school for interior design and decorating so that she would be able to tie the architecture and interiors together to have the ability to offer more to her clients.

Aishah has over 22 years of expertise in design and construction, and she has managed projects worth $5 million to $75 million in both the public and private sectors. Aishah started her very own parttime interior design firm in 2006 while continuing her job full-time on other projects.

She believes that the decision to start her business was kind of a no-brainer for her, despite the fact of having to do so during the recession of 2009. As she comes from a family of entrepreneurs and small business owners, the journey was something that was going to happen eventually, but she did it sooner than expected. She always had her business part-time, but when the recession of 2009 occurred in New York City, she was let go by the employer. While trying to pursue a full-time job, she was pushing and marketing the part-time business which ended up becoming her full-time job for 13 years and she has been doing wonders since.

About AC Design & Development

AC Design & Development offers interior design and decorating services, architectural and space planning, and kitchen and bathroom design. They primarily work with homeowners for gut renovations, new home designs, extensions, and interiors. They also have commercial projects ranging from medical offices and beauty salons and currently, they are working with a well-known hotel chain for an interior renovation of the guest rooms.

They start by determining what are the needs of the client and what are their expectations from the results. They identify the budget and whether what clients want to accomplish is within their budget. Once this is completed and their expected timeline, they then start to map out the room and provide different design options as to what can be done along with the anticipated cost for the work. The costs will include any construction work that’s required, along with the finishes, i.e., furnishings, window treatments, tile, kitchen cabinets and countertops, etc.

If the client has their contractor to perform the work, they will work with their contractor. If not, then they make recommendations to contractors that they have worked with in the past and have good work relationships with. They oversee all our projects from inception to completion. At AC Design & Development, they handle the purchasing and coordinating of all the finishes and furnishings and once the work is completed, they then proceed to set up and stage the rooms.

The success of AC Design & Development

Aishah thinks that her greatest obstacle in achieving success was in the early stages of getting the business off the ground. There was a lot that she did not know, basically, the business side of a design business and there were so many things that she had to learn to be successful to sustain this business. She utilized her time by taking as many courses as possible, whether online or in person, to learn the business side of everything. She was grateful to have had her dad at that time, who had a successful restaurant for over 10 years and that provided her with guidance and support.

The driving force behind her success as a businesswoman is the fact that she still loves what she does! She always said to herself that when she gets to a point where she doesn’t like what she does anymore then she has to find something else to do. She believes that she is grateful that she is not there yet. She loves the freedom of owning and running her own business. It’s been 13 years now and the company has grown to a place where they have a team to help them get to the next level. The excitement of getting to the next stage is what keeps driving Aishah.

Strategy of excellence

Aishah approved keys to Success

There are a few points that she considers the keys to success:

• Ambition and setting a goal as to what you want to accomplish.

• Having the ability to be flexible when things don’t go as planned. You should always have a plan B, C, and D!

• Don’t share your business with everyone, share your thoughts and ideas with like-minded individuals who can provide you guidance and support.

• Remember that life will occur and will sometimes push you off course. The goal is to make sure that you stay focused on what you want to accomplish so that you can get back on course!

• Always have a written plan and go back to that plan as often as needed so that you can stay on track and if things change you can always change the plan to accommodate what you need to do.

AC Design & Development focuses on customer service. They maintain a certain level of transparency so that the client is aware of everything that is taking place and why. They hold clients’ hands throughout the design process, from construction to completion, so the client is always aware of every step that is taking place.

Aishah believes that in the early stages of growing this business, it is very challenging to maintain a work-life balance. She is naturally a workaholic so would work 12 to 15 hours a day. Unfortunately, you cannot sustain this for very long without it taking its toll on your health. So, she had to allow herself to take a day off to rest and relax without feeling guilty about the work that she had left on the table.

Whenever it is possible Aishah visits the trade events that they have in the city. Her team and herself stay abreast of the latest design trends or innovations by participating in webinars from trade experts. This enables her to pass along what is relevant to the clients and they appreciate knowing that AC Design and Development is always on top of what is current and can provide honest opinions to them regarding what would be beneficial for their projects.

Strategy of excellence

The advice that I would give an aspiring entrepreneur particularly a woman who is interested in starting their own interior design business is to:

Never give up on your dream.

Do your homework and learn the business first because what you love to do and the reason why you’re starting your business only make up about 10% of the business and the rest IS THE BUSINESS!

Take as many marketing courses as you can take because marketing has changed over the years and is still constantly evolving and you have to explore all avenues to get your name out there to generate revenue for your business.
