Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful hurricanes to strike the Caribbean and the southeast U.S., hit the U.S. & U.K. Virgin Islands before heading to Puerto Rico on Sep. 6, 2017 . Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Roselló stated that the storm was more dangerous than anything they’ve ever seen and compromised much of the island’s infrastructure. Despite the damage to infrastructure and at least 1.5 million power outages, Puerto Rico avoided the worst of the hurricane; yet the nascent destruction of Irma still caused three deaths. The dual-island nation of

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said 95% of the buildings on Barbuda are damaged and the island is “literally underwater” and “barely inhabitable.” An estimated 50% of Barbuda is now homeless. Two people died on the French islands of St. Martin and St. Barthelemy. Ten deaths were recorded on the French and Dutch islands of St. Martin, St. Barts, and Anguilla. The French government states that their side of St. Martin has sustained at least €1.2B ($1.44B) in damages. On the Dutch side of St. Martin, more than two thirds of homes were destroyed by the storm. Haiti and the Dominican Republic were both less damaged than expected,

Equifax faces a credit breach Staff Writer

Among the crazy weather last week, with multiple hurricanes, and even an earthquake in southern Mexico, it’s easy to have missed the Equifax credit breach that was announced on September 7th, in what many are calling the “worst data breach in the history of the modern era.” Equifax is one of the largest consumer credit reporting agencies in the world, with the personal information of over 800 million individuals, and over 88 million businesses worldwide. Of those consumers, 143 million American individuals’ information was exposed in a breach; this includes

Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, driver’s licenses numbers, and 209,000 credit card numbers. Equifax discovered this breach this summer, on July 29th, 2017, and they believe the hack occurred in the middle of May. There is currently no law stating how many days a company has to disclose such an incident to the public, but the fact that it took 40 days to do so is unacceptable and is likely to raise scrutiny from the various governmental agencies and the public. The entire situation has been fraught with poor decisions and suspicious activity. Three of Equifax’s top executives sold large amounts of stock only a few days after the breach was discovered —

before it was disclosed — benefiting from their shares before Equifax (EFX) shares dropped 14% on Friday, September 8th. This caused significant controversy, and many senators and lawmakers are urging the FTC, SEC, and DOJ to determine whether these managers violated insider trading laws by doing so. Following their public breach notification, Equifax set up a website for customers to determine if they were one of the individuals that were affected. Customers who used this site, however, claimed that the information provided was inaccurate after receiving conflicting results when entering their information multiple times. Additionally, the security PIN that was assigned to each user was generated using the date and time, rather than using a randomly generated number; this would allow significantly easier access to any person trying to brute force their way into someone’s credit report, just adding insult to injury. As of September 14th, Equifax

has fixed this issue and is using a randomly generated PIN, after much public outcry. The exploit the hackers used to breach Equifax’s systems was found be a vulnerability in the Apache Struts framework, used to create Java web applications (if you’re at all familiar with this field, you likely won’t be surprised to hear the words “Java” and “vulnerability” together). The real kicker here though, is that this is a known vulnerability that was fixed on March 6th, in a patch that Equifax failed to update their web applications to. This breach could have been prevented, had Equifax done their due diligence and updated their systems. Equifax is currently offering free identity theft protection and credit file monitoring, but I personally wouldn’t trust them, and I certainly wouldn’t give them any more data. The best thing to do, if you may have been affected, is to freeze your credit until your account and identity are no longer compromised.

arrived. Approximately one million people were evacuated from Cuba before the storm hit landfall on Sep. 8, yet the storm still killed ten. On Sep. 9, Irma, at this point a category 4 storm, hit landfall in Florida. Due to heavy flooding in the lower keys, boats from the dock lay around in the streets. Irma continued its path up Florida’s Gulf Coast, eventually becoming a category 1 storm as it hit major cities like Tampa and Naples. On Sep. 11, the storm moved into Georgia, where Governor Nathan Deal expanded a statewide state of emergency. On Monday and Tuesday, now Tropical Depression Irma went as far inland as northern Ala-

bama and Tennessee. Despite its inland path, Irma still caused excessive flooding on the Atlantic coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. At least 65 people have died in the hurricane, including 22 in the U.S. — 12 of which were in Florida. Florida Governor Rick Scott checked medical facilities in Florida after six died at a nursing home that was operating without power for days. Hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean as a category 5 storm, sustaining winds of 118 mph. Irma’s maximum sustained winds of 185 mph are the strongest winds at landfall in recent history, tying with a hurricane that struck the Florida Keys in 1935.

Davis Hall crowned Dodgeball King by NASIR MONTALVO Staff Writer

On Tuesday, September 12, the freshman halls came together in Walker Gym to see which hall would be crowned this year’s dodgeball champion.

Walker Gym was filled with students wearing an array of colors. This year, defending champions Hayden Hall battled in red, Humphreys Hall in green, Castle Point Hall (CPH) in blue, and Davis Hall in “yellow” (black seemed to be the color of choice among their team). As every group displayed their chants and began to prepare themselves, the referee (Stevens’ own chief of police, Timothy Griffin) stated some rules and closed with “Don’t be stupid!” With that, the games began. The first match was a face-off between Humphreys Hall and Hayden Hall. The game erupted into chaos, but Hayden Hall’s strategy was to wait until all the balls came to them,

and then to throw them sporadically. Despite this, Humphreys Hall did not let off their steam and it ultimately dwindled down to three girls on Hayden. However, they could not make Hayden Hall victorious once again: the last player stand-

ing for Hayden forfeited the match. As Humphreys settled down after their win, it was time for CPH and Davis Hall to face off. Before the match started, the teams were already competing for the best chant. The match was close. There were lots of brutal shots, and both teams even began shouting obscene language. Davis Hall later won that match defeating CPH. Davis Hall and Humphreys Hall were the last teams to play. While everyone watched upstairs, the two teams battled it out. Davis Hall showed Humphreys Hall no mercy and eliminated most of their players in the first couple of minutes. Eventually, everyone but
