PROUD+ 2023

The Studio Door art gallery in San Diego, California is a respected creative space that showcases contemporary art across various mediums. It supports emerging and established artists through exhibitions and workshops fostering a vibrant art communty. The gallery’s diverse exhibitions reflect current trends and engage the local community through events and educational programs. Gallerist Patric Stillman mentors local artists in professional development while overseeing 17 studio artists. The Studio Door is a dynamic space that plays a vital role in promoting contemporary art and nurturing artists talent.

PROUD+ is a San Diego Tradition. Now in its sixth edition, the national exhibition has connected local artists with their national counterparts and to leading LGBTQ+ art leaders. Past jurors have included Directors from Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, ONE Archives at USC Libraries and Stonewall National Museum & Archives. With so few national opportunities for LGBTQ+ artists, these connections have become instrumental for the growth of the participating artists. Previous exhibition catalogs are available to flip through online at TheStudioDoor.com website.

Jonathan D Katz is an activist, educator, writer and queer art historian. He is internationally renown for his research and insights into LGBTQ+ artists. Two of his most recognized curated exhibitions are “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture” (2010) at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and “Art AIDS America” (2015) which traveled through the US.

Katz is currently working on a variety of exhibition programs across the globe, most significantly in South America and Europe. This year, he is a part of three significant programs relating to contributions to the art world by LGBTQ+ creators:

“Not Gay,” showcasing Trans art at SUNY in Freedonia, NY.

“On The Way To Gay,” featuring art connected to the formative development of the US gay rights movement.

“First Homosexuals,” a two-part survey of the very first self-consciously queer art created internationally in the first 50 years since the term “homosexual” was coined (1869 - 1930) at Wrightwood 659 (Chicago, IL).

Katz was a founder of Queer Nation and Harvey Milk Institute as well as being responsible for the very first queer scholarship on a number of artists.

Pride is a time for more than simply celebrating. It is also a time to remember our shared struggles, those that came before and how we are a part of a larger community. In that spirit as part of PROUD+, Maurice Cassidy is performing this thoughtprovoking performance that fearlessly delves into the depths of human experiences, shedding light on the complexities of suicide, mental health, sexuality and addiction. Through powerful storytelling, it raises awareness and encourages dialogue that speaks to the LGBTQ+ community while inviting audiences to confront these challenging subjects with compassion and understanding. Cassidy’s raw vunerable and artistic expression creates a transformative experience that prompts reflection, promotes greater understanding of the trials our Trans friends live and ultimately impires hope and resilience.

“Soon the day will come when science will win victory over error, justice a victory over injustice, and human love a victory over human hatred and ignorance.”

LGBTQ Legacy Visual Arts Project • Part One: Berlin

Broken Pedestals is an expansive project that aims to showcase a larger collection of visual artworks, starting with a diverse group of LGBTQ individuals living in Berlin before World War II. These courageous individuals lived their lives openly, loving, fighting, and playing just as we do today. During the 1920s, Berlin became a sanctuary for our community, where the modern gay movement began to take shape. It was a time of groundbreaking progress, marked by the formation of organizations, nightclubs, literature, media, medical advancements like gender reassignment surgeries, and the struggle for equality. Sadly, the vibrant freedoms experienced by LGBTQ individuals came to a devastating halt with the ascent of Hitler and the onset of World War II. Their legacy laid the groundwork for the transformative events of Stonewall years later.

PATRIC STILLMAN
- Magnus Hirschfeld

“A human being who was born a man, who was my husband, my friend, my comrade – has now become a woman, a complete woman. And this human being was never intended to be anything but a woman.”

The title ‘Broken Pedestals’ carries significant meaning. It acknowledges the deliberate erasure and fragmentation of LGBTQ history, which has severed our community’s connection to its past. Moreover, it confronts the harmful aspects of cancel culture, which attempts to tarnish the reputation of our forebearers due to their imperfections.

As the Broken Pedestals project evolves, there is a hope that it will be showcased alongside LGBTQ Archives in various regions of the US. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to actively reflect on how we embrace the humanity of those who came before us. What do the contributions of the past reveal about our community today? What lessons can we learn from history to shape our future? This ongoing endeavor is still in progress, with the intention of exploring two additional pods—one set in New York during the pivotal years surrounding Stonewall and another set in San Francisco during the emergence of the AIDS crisis.
