WELCOME Students. Hello. .

//////////////////////// MAGAZINE

Welcome back after the Winter break! We’ve missed you. Thus we’ve concocted an overflowing basket of delights for February’s pages, enough to keep you entertained all month.

Managing Director Hussain Shafique Editor In Chief Kate Hobson Design Director Shane Gilmartin Web Designer Francesca Cirillo Photography Jacqueline Smith Photography & Andy Wright / Sytography 07595 431356

Flip the pages to discover our Valentine’s special, brimming with tips and ideas to make the annual night of love and kisses to go without a hitch, whether you’re hooked up or riding solo. On top of that, we’ve packed in some celeb interviews, chatting with Example courtesy of Capital FM, and we schmoozed with the stars of All Time Low when they performed at Sheffield’s O2 Academy. If you’ve been packing in a few too many home comforts on your break from uni, then you might want to check out The Student’s alternative fitness regime – all whilst you’re watching Towie. And as the bank account of a student is rarely a healthy one, we’ve teamed up with The Samaritans to help guide you out of the red. Set the stereo to love song classics of the ‘90s, whip out the chocolate sauce and get down and dirty with The Student Magazine.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Need to relieve stress after exams? Make the most of Sheffield Students’ Union

Exams are over and it is now time to relax for a few days and let yourself have some well-deserved fun! Sheffield Students’ Union has all the usual club nights on from sports clubs’ favourite ROAR to everyone’s favourite cheesy music night, Pop Tarts. There’s no excuse now all the deadlines have been met and exams have been sat so get your friends out and have a great time. Drinks will be priced at the same amazing prices as always. Let the good times roll!make sure you don’t miss out!

Give it a Go: York, Cambridge, Oxford and Chester

February is the month for exploring and making the most of the country you live in with trips to many brilliant places. Ticket prices range from £12 to £18 and all trips are bound to be worth every penny. Why not check out two of the oldest and grandest Universities in the world by visiting Cambridge and Oxford? Or why not wander the quaint and picturesque city of York and visit all of its landmarks? There’s even the option to shop in the fascinating city of Chester. Escape your usual routine and experience somewhere new.

Bring It Don’t Bin It!

Up until the 5th February you can get rid of unwanted items cluttering up your home at Sheffield Students’ Union. Bring along anything you no longer want or require and it will be sold on to someone else, with all proceeds going to charity! It’s a great opportunity to clear out your unused stuff and perhaps pass things on to someone who needs them more. On Wednesday 8th February all items will be sold at a discounted price, so come down and grab yourself a bargain!

08.

There’s no need to stray away from University this February - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union... HALLAM UNIVERSITY SHU Poetry Competition

If you’ve got the knack for creative writing then why not try your hand at potery? The competition called Uni.Verse is open only to students and the winners’ poems will be put up in the Adsetts and Collegiate learning centres for all to see. First, second and third prize winners all get awarded with a book token, so if poetry is your thing then this is for you. All poems must be submitted before 24th February and of course, it has to be your own work.

Hallam Snow Angels

Hallam Union needs people to volunteer to help out the community this winter. As you all know, Sheffield can get pretty cold at this time of year and snow isn’t unusual, this can be difficult for some of the more vulnerable members of society. It will be a great way to get to know the people who live near you and to give something vital back to your community. More information is being provided on the Hallam Union website so check it out if this is something that interests you.

Thank Phoenix it’s Friday!

Exams are over so you can finally get back that wonderful Friday feeling. The great cocktail prebar that is on every Friday is now on Saturday nights too! Drinks prices are great, with cocktails from only £3, pitchers for £5 and fishbowls for £10. You are unlikely to find cheaper cocktails anywhere! Every time you spend £10 at the bar you have the chance to have a go on the spin wheel, with the chance to win some great offers and prizes including ‘double your round for a pound’ and win free cocktails!

om the Always on fire with news fr am music scene is Capital FM’s Ad sure he O’Neill! This month he madehe n he caught up with Example w mo nth. performed in Sheffield last

You’ve just played in Sheffield, which was amazing by the way, and the next time you come back to Yorkshire it will be as part of your big arena tour – how does that feel?

It’s crazy! Although when you get to an arena level there’s loads of places that you never get to play again, lovely little places!

You’ve been touring in smaller venues, how are you planning on making your show different to fill the big arena stages? Are we going to see you on wires floating through the air? (Laughs) That’s not really my vibe. I’ve been to a lot of shows and studied people I like. People like the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and obviously I supported Faithless on tour. I think that when you’re in the pop world you can do a pop show. Take JLS - they can bring out the carnival outfits with people dressed up, 30 dancers and people getting on a spaceship or moving platform… I don’t think that would work for my show though.

So what will your shows be like?

Well, when I watched Faithless play there were lots of incredible lights, amazing sound and just an amazing set, a proper two hour rave. I’m not going to be stopping and wishing people Happy Birthday - whilst I do like

people with birthdays that’s not what I’m about. It’s about having a big party, so it’s going to be a big rave up!

You’ve got to have ticker tape falling from the sky at the end though… No, there will be no ticker tape! There’s not even going to be any pyro, I am the pyro! We will get to that stage eventually but you’ve got to grow, you can’t just go, “I’m playing arenas”, and then all of a sudden just start wheeling out jugglers and stuff!

You literally haven’t stopped this year - you finish this tour and a few months later it’s the Arena tour. Are you going to manage to relax and get a holiday in? I’ve got a gig in New Zealand and then Australia straight after and then I’m planning on staying there for four weeks. I’m probably going to start writing the next album, so it will be relaxed. I would imagine in an average day I would probably go for a run, go to the studio, sing for a couple of hours, go eat, go surfing and stuff like that.

You know your diary well. You’re not like some of the stars - just shoved in a jet and flown here, there and everywhere. Yeah, I know everyday what I’m doing.

My favourite thing of yours this year has to be the Example limited edition Elastoplast plasters - I’ve got box number 14 of 150.

That’s not bad; I’ve got the first 10. I’ve actually given some to my Mum for Christmas. You can sell these on Ebay now for a decent amount of money, people are paying like a hundred quid for them. It’s probably the best plaster endorsement since Nelly. He used to wear plasters on his cheek.

Will you sign my box so I can make a few more quid on Ebay? (Laughs) No, get lost!

Lush… so some down time, laid back Aussie style?

Yeah, that’s the plan, then it’s LA for a week, write some more songs, New York for a week, write some more songs, back to the UK for the Brits… I don’t know if I’m nominated yet but it’s free booze so I should go.

Valentines Scatter the rose petals, dim the lights and light the candles – yes, your favourite event of the year has arrived. For those of you smugly coupled up, we’ve concocted the perfect seduction techniques to charm your soulmate with your perfectly poised affections, from hot dates to gifts of love.

But if the sight of love-heart adorned shop windows, sickly sweet teddybears and fully booked restaurants make you cringe with the shiver of singledom then never fear; we’ve not forgotten you. Read on to discover tricks and ideas to fill your Valentine’s night.

If you’re anything like us, Valentine’s Day will be spent watching Bridget Jones’s Diary on re-run and singing ‘All By Myself’ into a hairbrush, scoffing our way through an entire tub of Ben & Jerry’s (Baked Alaska for us). However, it’s now time to put the spoon down and embrace the single life – you can do what you want, when you want. We’ve compiled the ultimate guide for the sexy single student in Sheffield. Leave the sobbing into a pillow to Bridget and get yourself out and proud as a singleton on the mean streets of the Steel City, realising that sometimes you are your own best company (as are your single best friends)...

Your powers of diplomacy will come in useful this year, Aquarius. Although a good dose of drama will kick off between friends, remember to remain neutral. Sitting on the fence can be surprisingly comfortable.

Blogged

It’s Complicated Kate Hobson / www.fumblesandroses.wordpress.com The

f relationship status: the definitive truth to your romantic situation.

However did we survive without good old Facey-B revealing someone’s availability? Not knowing whether that new guy at work already has a girlfriend? Being oblivious to the fact that your one true love has finally broken off their engagement to someone else? Yes, the relationship status is quite obviously one of life’s necessities. So for want of something meaningless yet strangely productive to do, let’s take a look at the various relationship options and analyse their underlying meanings: 1. Single = ‘I’m a single pringle, baby, and you know you want some – message me because I am available!’ Alternatively, the ‘Single’ status is aimed at someone in particular and means, ‘I am sooo over you/ You’re dumped’. Harsh. 2. In a relationship = ‘I’m off the market and not available for dates’. Adding to whom in particular you’re in a relationship with is further insistence of your dedication to each other and, as we all know, a Facebook relationship means it’s OFFICIAL. 3. Engaged = Well, engaged. For anyone under the age of 22 to select this means, ‘I am sooo dedicated to u and we will B 2geva 4eva n eva’. Hmm. 4. Married = Married and thus off the market. 5. It’s complicated = ‘I’m kind of seeing someone/ various people but I don’t like them that much so I’m still up for offers’. 6. In an open relationship = Seriously? 7. Widowed = Self explanatory. 8. Separated = ‘Can’t afford a divorce from my bitch of a husband/wife’. 9. Divorced = Why would you want to declare this to the world? Surely you’re once again single and ready to mingle? 10. In a civil partnership = Again, self explanatory. And if you don’t list a status? Then you’re a secretive beast shrouded in mystery. How intriguing of you.

Killer Heels Sophie Bromley-Piazza We’ve all been there. As your friends are throwing their best shapes, working the room, you’re perched on a stool in the corner. Those six-inch heels that you felt a million dollars in at the beginning of the night have turned on you. Someone has sneakily changed the soles to a bed of nails and the straps have steadily tightened like a boa constrictor. Like twins from a horror movie, they’re trying to kill you, one toe at a time. Despite the risks, we’ll never stop wearing heels-42 per cent of us are even willing to admit we’d wear a shoe we liked even if we knew they were going to damage our feet. And high heels can do some serious damage. So here are some tips on how to avoid bunions à la Vicky Beckham. Firstly, a thicker heel provides more support and better stability. Secondly, make sure your heels fit properly (sounds obvious, but still), If your feet are falling forwards in the shoe you risk serious damage by putting weight on to a small part of your foot. Thirdly, pick shoes with some cushioning on the ball of the foot, or use pads or insoles. Finally, my preferred choice, take a sneaky pair of flats in your bag to minimize the time spent hobbling on pavements. Splash out on the specially made shoes that fold up to fit into even the tiniest of clutches. Check out Flatmates by Redfoot, whose stylish designs will make the swap a little more bearable.

Viva Zabiela Laura Keen Good Saturday nights out for a student in Sheffield are few and far between, so when the rare treat came along, we grabbed it by the horns. Not only did the rarity lie in the fact it was a Saturday (typically full of ‘townies’), Shuffle was bringing us a rare House infused delight. Coming from Newcastle, a town where the House scene is thriving, it is promising to see Plug gradually introducing more lead DJs. James Zabiela is a regular at Plug, and with the venues epic sound system I couldn’t wait to see him gig there. We decided that Shuffle was to be our destiny, and soon got things underway.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

It’s no secret that Saturday night drinking prices are astronomical, so we met at a friend’s flat at 8pm to ensure we could get a good pre-session in. After copious drinking games and endless vodka shots, we felt ready to attack the night. It was a pleasant surprise when we arrived and saw the drink prices - only £1.50 for a shot of Sambuca / Tequila and £2.50 for an Amaretto and Coke or Cheeky Vimto. Then we saw the line-up for the evening and things got even better. Leeds based producer Midland was warming Zabiela up and, as expected, his set didn’t disappoint. All the closet House lovers were out in full force and the vibe within was incredible. After an epic set, Zabiela took to the decks and slowed things down with his break beat approach. As the bass kicked in, and the blonde locks started bouncing, he had us on the ceiling. At several points, he was leant right into the crowd dropping tunes from his ipad - typical of his world class, crowd pleasing style.

f/jzabiela

After a ninety minuite set, I was summoned to the toilets by one of my accomplices. There I found what could only be described as an exhausted, food hungry, dishevelled being slumped against the wall. I knew that it was time our journey came to an end.

I N T E RV I EW One of pop punk’s hottest new bands, All Time Low flew in to Sheffield on their sold out UK tour. We caught up with them at the O2 Academy for a quickie with lead singer, Alex Gaskarth.

42.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

Welcome to Sheffield – have you been here before? No we haven’t been to Sheffield before, but we are here now! Got here at some ridiculous hour in the morning, it’s pretty cool though but freezing cold. How do the UK audiences differ from that of the US? One thing we all notice is the energy of the crowds; everyone seems a little bit more passionate over here. We can vary the tour a lot more over in the UK with a wider range of [suport acts] as people have more of an acceptance to different genres. How is the tour going so far? Amazing! We started in Belfast; it was our first time in Belfast which was a great way to kick off the tour. I don’t think we have ever had a bad show over here, you are always really welcoming, and the crowds get bigger and bigger every time we come back which is cool. It’s a pretty cool feeling to come to Sheffield for the first time and sell it out. Do you change the show slightly depending on where you are? We will sometimes change it up a little bit but most of the time we stick to the same thing, but we never say the same things, we keep it fresh and mix it up a little bit and be spontaneous. What’s your last thought before you go out on stage/ any rituals? “Oh shit, here we go again”… We don’t have any rituals per say but I think it’s just a typical thing let’s just listen to good music and have a good time. It’s the highlight of our day to go on stage. You picked up Best Live Act at the 2011 Kerrang Awards – how did

this feel and what are your plans for 2012? It was a big thing for us as it was the first award that we have really been recognised for. It is really important to us. Plans for 2012: “We are going to end the world as per the Mayan calendar; we are going to go out with a bang”. You formed back in 2003 back in high school – how has your style progressed since then? Our biggest evolution is that we’ve just gotten better; better musicians and tighter as a band. We’ve always been based in the pop/punk scene, growing up with this and it’s what we fell in love with, so I think we’ve always had that sound. Where did the name, All Time Low come from? It’s from a New Found Glory song, ‘Head on Collision’. We were listening to this record a lot at the time and it stood out. We were looking for names and it kind of rolled off the tongue. What’s been the biggest all time low of your life? Well, erm, I’ve never really had an ‘all time low’, not really hit a rock bottom or anything. But I think maybe my lowest low was when we were writing the last album. It felt like I was being worked to the bone, I just needed a break and I freaked out a little as I’d been away from home for a year. Everything was non-stop but it was worth it.

They are the weirdest things. Someone did give us Gameboys once, which were pretty cool. From the UK we get a lot of those giant cookies. Millie’s Cookies. What inspires and motivates you to write and make music? Everyday life, all our music is inspired by real experiences. We’re really inspired by watching other bands do it and we wanted to live out that dream. In particular, Blink 182 have inspired us a lot.

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS //////////////////////// Where did you wake up this morning? My bunk in my tour bus in Sheffield Any secret celebrity crushes? Natalie Portman Describe All Time Low in three words. Dirty, Sweaty, Fun Any hidden talents? Video Games - The Legend of Zelda! If you were a pizza, what would be your topping? Mango Tandoori Chicken

You’ve got a pretty dedicated fan base – what’s been the weirdest thing you’ve ever received from a fan? From the US we have got lots of dildos and a stripper pole once!

The Potato Oven

TAKEAWAY REVIEW

With a doormat overloaded with takeaway menus, choosing where to order from can be a terrifying prospect. Fear no more – here at The Student we’re no stranger to food by phone so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to review what the city’s eateries have to offer – all in the name of research, of course. What? The Potato Oven Where? 64 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LR What did we eat? Jacket potato with tuna mayo and sweetcorn, baked beans and salad How much? £3 When you hear the word, ‘takeaway’, the first image that pops into your mind is probably of something dripping with grease and temptingly unhealthy. Not so with The Potato Oven. The humble jacket potato – nutritious, simple and loved by all. The range of toppings in The Potato Oven is huge, ranging from prawns to chilli to curry. I opted for tuna mayonnaise and sweetcorn, with a second topping of baked beans. Included is your choice of salad – fresh, juicy cucumber and sweetcorn. The enticing baked scent wafted up out of the bag and the food was still piping hot even when I’d got back home. The portions at The Potato Oven are generous – the potato itself was massive, piled high with beans and tuna. If you’ve ever attempted to cook a potato in the microwave you’ll know what I mean when I say there’s no competition against an oven baked jacket – this was the latter. Crispy, burnished skin with a fluffy, moist filling – delicious. Definitely value for money – masses of food for just £3!

FLICKS TAKE AN INSIGHT INTO THE THOUGHTS OF THE STUDENT MAGAZINE CRITICS AS THEY PICK AND PROD TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LATEST RELEASES.

War Horse Director Steven Spielberg (Cert. 12A) The young Albert Nallcott (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to part with his beloved thoroughbred, Joey, who is sold to an army captain at the outbreak of WWI in order to pay overdue debts on the Nallcott farm. Joey journeys through the war-torn fields of France, touching the lives of everyone he comes in contact with; from British soldiers to French civilians, even a fellow steed. Meanwhile, Albert embarks on his own journey into manhood, joining the British ranks at The Somme, tracing the hoof-prints of his equine friend in the hope of one day being reunited. An adaptation of Nick Stafford’s hugely successful play, which in turn was adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 children’s novel, War Horse is a text orchestrated to provoke tears; this, in the hands of the man responsible for E.T. and Schindler’s List, of course means not a dry eye in the cinema. The lush greenery of the Devonshire landscapes through Spielberg’s lens looks as stunning as any Constable, and Irvine gives a solid performance as the human lead, although his character is significantly underused. Like all of Spielberg’s later oeuvre, War Horse suffers from over sentimentality and at two and a half hours long does outstay its welcome. If, however, you are willing to hand yourself over to Spielberg and his ever constant vision, you’ll be rewarded with an old fashioned, teary treat.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

FLICKS Coriolanus Director Ralph Fiennes (Cert. 15) The transposition of Shakespearian texts to the modern age is certainly nothing new, perhaps the most notable example of this phenomenon on the big screen is Baz Luhrmann’s money spinning, punk adaptation, Romeo + Juliet. Unlike Romeo + Juliet, or indeed Julie Taymor’s bizarrely anachronistic Titus, Coriolanus never veers into pantomime; the transposition of the text from Ancient Rome to a contemporary military stronghold never comes across as kitsch or quirky. One of Shakespeare’s most politically engaged pieces, Coriolanus tells the tale of the eponymous Roman General (Ralph Fiennes), a military hero forced into running for consul by his power hungry mother. After two tribunes (a wonderfully snide James Nesbit and Paul Jesson) succeed in turning the lower classes against Coriolanus, he is forced into exile, wherein he lays himself at the mercy of his sworn enemy, Aufidius (Gerard Butler). Ralph Fiennes is an actor able to turn even the most mundane character into something explosive; gifted with a Shake speare lead he is sublime. So too is Fiennes direction, confident and assured, where he could have easily been overwhelmed by the weight of the material. Disappointingly, with its militaristic agenda and political intrigue, the film seems to want so badly to deliver a message, but the desired effect is lost amidst the adrenalin-pumped gun play and Fiennes stunning, spit-splattered performance.

The Descendants Director Alexander Payne (Cert. 15) George Clooney is decent but dull Matt King, a wealthy lawyer and sole trustee of a vast sprawl of land on an utopian Hawaiian island which is on the verge of being sold for development. Matt’s life is thrown into turmoil after a tragic waterskiing accident leaves his wife comatose, forcing Matt to step up from the position of “back-up parent”, and build a relationship with his two difficult daughters. Matt is further devastated to learn that his wife was having an affair at the time of the accident; cue a journey of self-realisation, harsh truths, and musings on the nature of family, loss and inheritance. Eight years have passed since Alexander Payne’s stunning booze fuelled road-trip, Sideways, but for fans of the writer/director it has been well worth the wait. Working from Kaui Hart Hemmings’ novel, Payne delivers a mostly cracking script with all the warmth and humour we’ve come to expect from him. George Clooney once again proves himself to be a film star of genuine class, ambition and talent; his performance here is one of the best amongst his increasingly diverse choice of rolls. Sure, the film has its flaws, most notably the pacing is a little clumsy at times, but to dwell on them would be to do a disservice to a wonderful, warm slice of drama from one of the best.

BEATS GET YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR THREE LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS SECTION FOR ALL THOSE BASS HEAVY RAVERS OUT THERE.

Slow Moving Millie ‘Renditions’ ~

Slow Moving Millie – singer, pianist and songwriter Amelia Warner – has, to be fair, got extremely lucky. Most will have heard her delicate vocals recently when they wangled their way into the country’s festive season through our television sets, in a well-known high street department store’s advertising campaign, featuring Warner’s cover of The Smiths ‘Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want’ as the heartstring-tugging piano ballad of the moment.

68.

The Maccabees ‘Given To The Wild’ ~

The Maccabees have, thus far in their career, received modest but steady levels of critical acclaim and recognition – ensuring a slow but steady ascent to success. ‘Given To The Wild’, however, seems likely to be the album that will catapult them into a whole new realm of distinction. First single from the album, ‘Pelican’ (released in 2011), is a perfect example of the punchy, fast-tempo efforts that are so frequently churned out of the current wave of guitar bands in the UK, but strangely has an entirely different feel to the rest of the album: contrastingly ambient and with a progressive feel.

This exposure has allowed Warner to release ‘Renditions’, which as the title suggests is largely composed of the singer’s cover versions of ‘80s hits including classics from Bananarama, Tears for Fears and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The highlight is certainly ‘Please…’ followed by ‘Head Over Heels’. It is difficult to tell whether these are the standout tracks amongst an otherwise fairly bland album due to Warner’s own talent and skill, or simply because of the excellent songs that they originally were - and still are - at the most basic level. Her own song ‘Beasts’ is terrible, So I suspect it may be the latter.

Highlights include ‘Heave’ – with its choral-like vocal layering and racing electronic beats - and final track ‘Grew Up At Midnight’, which rounds the album off with an uplifting and climatic crescendo. Other tracks such as the addictive, ‘Went Away’, showcase perfectly the vocal talent of singer Orlando Weeks. Overall, an album to be recommended as an addition to anybody’s music collection, whatever kind of modern pop rock you are inclined towards.

(UK Release Date – December 12th 2011)

(UK Release Date – January 9th 2011)

The Little Willies ‘For The Good Times’ ~

This American country outfit – which features Norah Jones on piano and vocals, Richard Julian on guitar and vocals, Lee Alexander on bass, Jim Campilongo on guitar and Dan Rieser on drums – have returned with ‘For The Good Times’, unable to resist the obvious chemistry between them as uncovered some years earlier, when they began playing for fun. From the start of the album, the whole thing sounds organic and very human – it’s clear that over-production is something this collection of musicians would never allow. Jones and Julian’s voices melt together in a way that happens only every so often in musical partnerships, and the result is most clearly demonstrated in tracks such as the laid-back ‘Lovesick Blues’, vibrant country classic ‘If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time’ and more delicately in the subtle harmonies within Jones’ cover of ‘Jolene’. (UK Release Date - January 9th 2011)

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

sheffield all stars

Your new album, ‘Breakfast’ drops here on March 5 th can you explain the title and what fans can expect?

Yeah man, basically breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we’re offering our aural breakfast. This album is the first thing we have to offer and really we just want to bring the music home and give the fans our own nutritious offering. Whenever me and Xaph had recorded a dope track or whenever we had a big gig, we would always celebrate good things with a huge breakfast, so yeah, we’re just bringing it all home.

Tell us about the new single, ‘Ray Charles’?

Well we couldn’t believe it was the track the label wanted, but they loved it. It was literally the last thing we recorded, me and Xaph were kicking back in the studio drinking and smoking. Xaph was laid back playing me some beats and he was wearing these huge shades and I swear he looked just like Ray Charles, and really that’s all the song is about. It’s all a freestyle, pen didn’t touch paper, and it’s just us having fun. We never thought it would be a single. It’s the same with the video, we like to have fun there too and we are sure to not take ourselves too seriously.

Chelsea Alice Scott 1.How would you describe your style of music? My music is very acoustic based but it’s heavily influenced by pop music. I write all the songs myself so I try to draw from other singer/ songwriters too, but still giving it an original edge of my stories and background. 2.Tell us something exciting about yourself. Being a musician is very exciting because I get to travel so many places and meet lots of new people. The most exciting things that are happening right now are my international bookings. Being able to spread my music abroad is brilliant and travelling to gorgeous places in the process is a massive bonus.

3.You taught yourself guitar and write your own songs – what sort of topics do you cover in your material? I always try to draw from my own experiences when writing songs because I feel the more real it is the more people can relate with me. For example, there’s a track on my EP called It’s Not Over, which I wrote for my brother while he went through a really tough time, and even now the songs reminds me that there’s always hope, no matter what the situation. 4.Where is your dream location to perform? My dream location to perform would have to be at Glastonbury festival. I’d love to look out into an audience and see a terrifying amount of faces looking back. 5.You’re releasing your first EP, ‘Lucky Girl’, this month – what can we expect to hear? The four track EP is a very fun album packed with catchy melodies and a few stripped back acoustic ones too. I draw a lot from my influences (Ed Sheeran, Colbie Caillat, Ellie Goulding) but the music has a slight country/ folk edge to it too. *Chelsea Alice Scott’s EP Lucky Girl is out 5th February 20 12, with a special launch gig at Costa Coffee on Division Street, Sheffield,
