What A Gwan?

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD The Tuesday Club Presents Dillon Francis On 15th May a great night is being put on by The Tuesday Club at Foundry and Fusion; Moombahton pioneer, Dillon Francis will be dropping the beats with support from Andy H. The night will start at 11, ending at 3a m and tickets are very reasonably priced at only £4.50! This is a lot cheaper than Tuesday Club events usually are so if you are a big fan, or just want a great night with excellent music then get your ticket now before they sell out. There is more information on this event on the Tuesday Club Facebook page.

Activities Awards 2012 On Monday 14th May, the Activities Awards are being held at the Mercure St. Pauls Hotel in Sheffield city centre. The awards highlight the hard work of societies throughout the year and there are many different categories that clubs will be nominated under. The nominations have already been released, so if your club or society has been nominated and potentially could win an award then get yourself a ticket and support your team. Tickets are quite pricey at £18.70 but it also includes travel to and from the awards and also for the after party at Population.

Lake District Explorer The Lake District is home to the most beautiful natural scenery Britain has to offer. Steeped in literary and artistic history, a visit to England’s largest National Park is the perfect medicine to cure those revision blues. Taking place on Sunday 27th May, £29.70 will fund your travel, a tour guide and a cruise on the stunning Lake Windermere. What better way to enjoy the spring sunshine than to adventure in God’s country. Unfortunately, budding adventurers have to get use to early starts - meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One at 7am, and get ready to ramble!

Swedish Back Massage Dissertation handed in, exams done for another year, why not unwind with a traditional Swedish back massage? There were writings on the best massage techniques as far back as Ancient Rome – after thousands of years perfecting the craft, isn’t it about time it came to Sheffield Uni? The Swedish massage, also known as the “classic massage”, is the perfect way to relax those aching joints and get the circulation going after the past few stressful weeks. Fancy it? Pop down to Gallery Room 3 on May 17th between 7pm and 9pm, it’s a steal at just £3.85 and don’t forget your bath towel!

There’s no need to stray away from University this Month - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union...

HALLAM UNIVERSITY Get involved in the London Olympics 2012

Your union has achieved a gold award from the NUS for being one of five student unions who are really trying to encourage students to get involved in London 2012. There is a whole section on the Hallam Union website now giving information on how you can get yourself involved. Whether you get involved in sporting opportunities, the torch relay or be part of it through arts and culture, there will be something to suit you. There are plenty of quotes from students and pictures on the website showing you how students are already feeling part of the games.

BOING BOING @ EMBRACE Coming back after the Easter holidays means that you are definitely going to be in need of a night out with all your friends. Boing Boing is Hallam University’s official Wednesday student night and vodka mixers are only 80p all night long. The night is always a good one and there are five rooms packed full with students and the best music around. In the two main rooms there is chart, dance, indie and ultimate party anthems. In the smaller rooms there is also chilled music, hip hop and r&b so there actually is something to suit everyone.

Creative Spark 2012 Now in its seventh year, the Creative Spark exhibition gives you the chance to see a display of Hallam student’s innovation, creativity and imagination. Creative Spark 2012 celebrates and showcases the final projects created by students. It takes you on a journey, capturing the moment when a creative spark hits, following it through to its execution. The exhibition covers a wide range of creative disciplines, from fine art to photography, engineering to English. Between the 6th and 23rd of June, Hallam’s City Campus will be home to Creative Spark, and with the end of term fast approaching, isn’t it time to show a little uni pride?

Gervais Phinn in Conversation On 18th of October, Hallam’s Pennine Theatre will be host to award winning author, TV and radio personality, Gervais Phinn. Yorkshire’s finest raconteur will have you on the edge of your seat as he shares his hilarious and sometimes poignant tales of his life as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. Tickets are £14 with all proceeds to Lost Chord. The charity provides musical stimulation to suffers of dementia For further details visit the Lost Chord website.

Always on fire with news from the music scene is Capital FM’s Adam O’Neill! This month he made sure he caught up with chart-topping, grime and electro maestro, Labrinth. Labrinth – good to see you. How are you? I’m great man, I’m on tour at the moment and I’m really enjoying it. Yes! You’ve popped in en route to sound-check, how’s it going? It’s going really well! I’m doing my headline tour on two songs! Nobody really knows any of the new material I’ve been performing but it’s been amazing. The show has been received better than we could have hoped for. There’s been mosh pits and lighters getting waved! Everything you could want from an audience. No dramas then? Well, actually apart from the other night when my tour manager lost the itinerary, we were stood outside a hotel at two in the morning! I wasn’t too happy! The album ‘Electronic Earth’ is out soon, you must be pretty excited? It’s been a labour of love, loads of work and I just need to get it released. It needs to get out my studio, it’s like one of those children that needs to leave home and get a job. Sometimes you’ve just got to kick ‘em out and say, “Come on, do something!” You’re not feeling like a pregnant lady ready to give birth then? Ermmm… no! I can’t wait to hear it! The singles, ‘Let The Sun shine’, ‘Earthquake’ and ‘Last Time’, are all amazing yet very different. I’m looking forward to seeing how the changes in music play out in the album. My album is completely like that. It’s a mix. Some people enjoy the mix and some people don’t. Some people are like, “Why don’t you have ten million Earthquakes and Let The Sun Shines on your set?” I want to please people that enjoy a variety of music and people that don’t, well, they came to the wrong show, man!

Tent APPeal Using the latest GPS technology TentFinder enables you to find your tent amongst the thousands of others at any music festival or other camping event. By simply adding a place (such as your tent, the beer tent, the main stage or even the toilets), TentFinder will then GPS stamp that location and you can name the place. You can optionally add a photograph and your stamped locations are saved and clearly shown across the screen. When you want to return to that location you simply press FIND and the app will guide you back using a virtual compass and a directional line laid over the festival map (Google Maps). Also included in the app is a torch for added assistance in finding your tent. This is a superbly simple and effective way of NEVER getting lost when trying to find your tent.

Lots of it. You can buy beer there but it tends to be expensive, so it’s best to bring your own as well. Most festivals don’t allow glass on site, so cans of beer/cider are your best bet. If you do want to bring spirits, empty them into plastic bottles before you go in. Bring some soft drinks as mixers too!

Condoms

This is an app available to all those who own a BlackBerry, iPhone or Android. Odds are you won’t know every single song by every single band performing that weekend. If you’re listening to a song you love but don’t know the name of, you can just Shazam it! The app records a small sample of the song, then gives you the artist, song name and links to YouTube videos.

.

Welly boots tend to be the most popular choice of footwear. Although they are practical when bracing muddy puddles, they aren’t the most comfy considering the walking you’re going to have to do. Hiking boots might be better if you own any (or any shoes you don’t mind getting trashed).

Pack of Tissues

.

This also doubles up as loo roll in case of emergencies. This is much more practical than carrying bits of toilet paper around in your pocket all day.

22.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

.

.

As disgusting as you may look, smell and feel (as will everybody else), you could still get lucky. It happens. So be prepared!

Dry Shampoo

.

Particularly for you girls. If you’re enjoying yourself as much as you should be, there will be very few opportunities to wash your hair. Spray in some Batiste dry shampoo when your hair is feeling lank to get clean, fresh hair in an instant.

.

Glowsticks / UV Paint

.

They’ll make the dance tent and silent discos that little bit more fun.

List of Set Times

.

You don’t want to end up missing your favourite bands; be prepared! If you know when and where they’re playing you can make sure you’re at the right place at the right time and get the most out of their set.

.

Very important you have this on you just in case you need to make any emergency repairs to your tent.

Fancy Dress

.

At a festival anything goes so think big! A theme among your group of friends will make it easier to find people in the crowds. Bizarre outfits are also a good way to meet people as it’s likely you’ll be followed by a group fighting to get their picture taken with you.

Tent Finder

.

There’s going to be a lot of tents wherever you go. Many will look the same. Tent Finder app for iPhone makes the journey back to yours that little bit easier, by GPS stamping the name of your tent’s location so you can always get back to it ASAP. You can even add other locations, so you can get to the best portaloo or the cheapest bar without any disputes over directions.

Baby Wipes

.

Essential for those days when you just can’t be bothered to find and queue for the shower.

Food

.

You can buy burgers and fast food there but if you want to save money you might want to bring your own. Snacks like biscuits, crisps, and cereal bars, or tinned food is good because it won’t go off. Pot Noodles are good too, but you’ll need a portable cooker for those. And what better excuse is a festival for a BBQ?

SHIT BOX

.

If you want to avoid the dreaded portaloos invest in a Shit Box, your very own portable, cardboard toilet! They’re £18.99 from thebrowncorporation.com and come with ten biodegradable poo bags, tissues, and a duffle bag to carry it all in. Not for the introverts, seeing as it means having to take a dump in public but it does mean you can skip the queues for the portaloos and poo wherever you want!

Flashing Mouth

.

They will fascinate everyone you meet, and they’re only £1.50 from glow.co.uk. Pop one in your mouth, and stand out from the crowd as your teeth light up.

C O N O R M A Y N A R D New face, Conor Maynard, has burst onto the music scene when his covers became a YouTube sensation. After the artists themselves started taking note, in a whirlwind Conor has become a chart hit with a loyal following of ‘Mayniacs’.

R E M E M B E R y o u s a W h i m h e r e f i r s t ! Hi, how are you? Good thanks, literally just woken up in my bus!

Did it take long to write? No, I did it in a day.

You started off by singing cover versions of your favourite songs and uploading them to YouTube. Then your YouTube channel became the 5th most subscribed to music channel in the UK without you even officially releasing a piece of music – did you ever imagine that this would happen? No, it’s amazing – I first started by just making videos to show my friends so I wouldn’t keep singing to them! Covers of songs, Usher’s ‘OMG’ was the first one, which blew up with 100,000 views, then Ne-Yo’s Beautiful Monster had a million views! Everyone started putting links to my songs, it’s crazy, I was the highest artist on the list on YouTube, all the others were drum and bass and dubstep tunes.

You’ve got some famous fans like Chris Brown and Ne-Yo – how does it feel to have people like that following you? Yeah, Chris Brown retweeted me early on, then it’s crazy how it’s progressed, I spent a week in Miami with Pharrell and I’ve been in LA with Ne-Yo. I’ve been working with Lil Wayne and Ludacris… It’s crazy, like I post a photo on Twitter then the next day it’s in The Sun or something… I’m surrounded by the right people though, all my friends still treat me the same!

How old were you when you put up your first song? 15, then it started going mental when I was 17. How did you get from YouTube to where you are now? Well, Ne-Yo himself saw my cover of ‘Beautiful Monster’, then one of his people rang me saying he’d love to work with me, asking me to go to America, I didn’t want to go though in case it was just one of my friends messing about! So I asked for proof and three days later I was having a Skype conversation with Ne-Yo saying he’d like to sign me. You got to No.2 in the chart – that’s an amazing achievement! Did you write ‘Can’t Say No’ yourself? Yes with Invisible Men – who worked on ‘Hot Right Now’ with Rita Ora – they produced the track. It was only written as a joke really, a bit tongue in cheek but everybody loves it! It’s not really a true representation of my life or anything, more of a premonition! (Laughs) I actually came up with the ‘Houston, I think we gotta problem’ bit first, then the rest of the song was written around that.

When is your debut album released? The end of July, ‘Contrast’ is what we’ve decided to call it. What can we expect from it? A bit of a surprise! All original songs, showing my versatility – can’t say much more! People are referring to you as the British Justin Bieber – how do you take this? Well yeah, first of course it’s flattering to be compared to someone that big, but I think people only compare us because we’re similar ages. My music is different and I’m British! Have you been to Sheffield before? No I’ve never been before, this is the last date of my tour and I’ve put a brand new song in to my set so it should be good! Who would be your dream person to work with? Ultimate is Drake. By the time I get to work with him though probably no one will like him anymore! Where do you hope your career will take you next? Erm, well generic goals really, I hope my singles do well and the album, then come the awards, and I’d like to break America…

Where did you wake up this morning? Premier Inn in Newcastle! Any secret celebrity crushes? Well, it used to be Megan Fox but now she’s married and pregnant so… Erm, I was interviewed by this Belgian presenter and artist called Elene? Don’t know her surname but it will be Maynard! Describe yourself in three words. Amazing… (laughs) No, erm - hungry, singing person. Any hidden talents? Acting? I was focused on acting before I got in to singing. If you were a pizza, what would be your topping? Margarita.

Sextual Messaging By Kate Hobson Published May 2012 Dirty texting is actually something of an art. There are many rules and parameters that one should abide by when undertaking a bit of naughty key tapping. Failure to comply can often result in some highly embarrassing situations, or can unwittingly brand you as a bit of an easy porn star. Neither desirable. When embarking on a new relationship, the flirty texts that pass between you can tell you a lot about what they’re like in bed. If it’s all safe, general conversation, you can be quite sure that the sender lacks a little bit of confidence in the bedroom department. On the other hand, it could mean that they’re just waiting for you to make the first move and once you do you may unleash the sexual beast that lies inside of them. Interesting. A slightly naughty text can work wonders capturing the recipient’s attention, but overly filthy words can be a little bit shocking if you’re not yet fully accustomed to being in the bedroom together. If you’re after more than just a simple roll in the hay then go easy on the utter filth, sticking to intriguing innuendos to whet their appetite. Pictures are something of a different matter. The most important point to remember is, above all, do NOT include your face in any images. These are undeniably incriminating and can far too easily fall into the wrong hands – remember, even the current love of your life can turn into a revengeseeking ex. No one is safe. Stick to tempting snippets of body parts. As a final point, be incredibly careful when pressing send. No one wants to accidentally send ‘I’m going to nibble your tush until you squeal’, to Dad, instead of Dave.

Racing Stripes By Sophie Bromley-Piazza Published May 2012 Everyone loves a bit of vintage, me included. But I’m not the type of girl to wear the classic florals or delicate laces that you see in so many vintage inspired pieces on the rails in almost every high street shop. However, this spring a new, clean-cut vintage look is blossoming. The racing stripe. A 60’s classic, made even more popular by the hugely influential and ironically fashion forward, sassy secretaries of TV hit Mad Men. As summer approaches this trend will be a stylish, high fashion but easy look for when the sun goes down. Tonal trousers with a bight stripe down the outside leg or a barely-there shirt with a centre or side stripe needs just a bronzed glow and polished hair to look catwalk ready. Add a light heel and a blazer for those all important interviews or go for some whacky wedges or pumps for a more playful, daytime feel. Sip cocktails and channel summer city chic. With such a simple look you can really push the boundaries and go for dramatic make up and bright accessories. Not to mention the fact adding a racing stripe to flattering cigarette trousers only makes your legs appear longer and slimmer. Keep your ensemble sophisticated by avoiding too many colours. However, don’t be temped to go too matchy-matchy. It might look like a fast food restaurant uniform, even if it is bang on trend.

Death on the Pitch By Tom Hardy Published May 2012 As a footballer myself, it was quite worrying to see a seemingly fit and healthy Premier League professional come close to death on the pitch. I’ve watched footage of footballers losing their lives due to heart-related problems in the past (Marc-Vivien Foe, Miklos Feher and Antonio Puerta to name three famous cases). The videos are on the internet, but they’re pretty distressing – it feels as if you know them personally. I wasn’t even watching the Tottenham-Bolton game, but the impression I got was that Fabrice Muamba had very little chance of surviving; did he know when he stepped onto the pitch that night something wasn’t quite right? Perhaps the pressures of the game today mean professionals are too scared to come out and say they don’t feel 100 per cent. Whilst Muamba’s health gradually improves day-by-day in hospital, no one knows whether he’ll actually ever play again. The debate has risen as to why football teams aren’t provided with heart-rate monitors to assess the health of a player’s heart. Surely if even one footballer’s life can be saved through medical testing, it’s a step in the right direction. No one wants to have to watch scenes like those broadcast at White Hart Lane again.

Oscilliate Wildly Presents: Joy Orbison and Boddika @ DQ By Laura Keen Published May 2012 So it’s been three months since the resolution to, frankly, stay more sober. It’s been a struggle but the willpower has held in relatively well… and then along comes this epic excuse to do the exact opposite.

An hour after queuing we were finally in and Joy Orbison was already smashing it with his winning combination of dubstep/ garage/ funky house. He had the crowd eating out of his palm and the night was still young. We headed straight to the bar, an offer of three beers for a fiver meant we were set up for a good night, and then Joy O dropped Froth/Mercy and the crowd went wild. Next Boddika took to the decks with a whole new vibe and took the meaning of energetic to the next level. Never before have I seen someone enjoy a bass line that much, he was practically standing on top of the decks. His unique, (almost indescribable) combination of electro/ techno house meant that we were all vibing well into the early hours. Although the set didn’t finish until 5.30am, we were in pieces by 4.30am. A brief exchange of agreeable mumbling saw us head off in a taxi home with overwhelmed ear drums and very sore feet.

Add your comment Anne Wise: ‘huge night i was there!’

images sourced from f/WildlyOscillate

After going to Oscilliate Wildly at The Rhythm Factory, we knew they don’t do it by the half. We jumped on the opportunity to see them return to DQ after taking a year long break, and knew it would be worth every last penny. Oscilliate Wildly combine all the best elements of underground clubbing alongside an un-missable collaboration of big name DJs. This time they were bringing us Boddika and Joy Orbison with their first ever ‘&’ set, an eagerly anticipated concept and at £10 a ticket it sold out days before the scheduled event.

Add your comment Scott Jordan: ‘smokers MASSIVE’

Plug 0 - Fez 1 By Amy Ledger Published May 2012 Ok, so last week was a heavy one to say the least. Not only was I lucky enough to see Maceo Plex and Danny Daze at Mint Club (which was an incredible, sweaty, unforgettable experience) but also managed to recover by Saturday and squeeze in Jamie Jones at Plug. This was my first time seeing JJ and if I’m being completely honest, I was massively disappointed! I’d heard from a few friends that his set at Warehouse Project Easter Weekend wasn’t that great, so I was hoping this night would be a little bit better with positive feedback. Ok, by no means was it the worst night out I’ve had, but I’ve got to admit, at no point in the night did it actually feel like I was seeing JJ! It was average to say the least. Don’t get me wrong, he dropped some absolute corkers from FCL to Noir & Haze, not forgetting Hungry For The Power (obv) but for me this just didn’t make up for the lack of spark his set had! Not to mention he looked tired and worn out. Lucky for me Ryad were hosting the unofficial after party at Fez Club from 2:30-7am with Tristan Da Cunha, not forgetting the lads from De:bug, Drumro[ll] and Cargo. A massive thanks to everyone that was involved with the after party because for me, this was when the party really got started. Good work lads!

STUDENTSTROLOGY The final couple of months of the uni year are here – but what does the summer

of love 2012 have in store for you?

her crystal ball and brewed enough tea to supply an army Our resident Studentstrologist has once more consulted the skies, closely examined no warning of what’s to come then we recommend you read on in order to read the tea leaves. If you fancy facing the upcoming holidays with be foolish not to take heed of her warnings. now… Beware, innocent students, the universe works in strange ways and you’d

When your mates get you into a bit of a conundrum, Aquarius, it will be your quick-thinking which gets you out of it. Keep a clear head and you won’t find yourself shelling out for their little accidents.

You’ll be the one they all follow, Aries. Try not to get too carried away though, no one likes a bossy little madam.

A booze cruise in Malia just doesn’t cut it for you, does it, Gemini? Your thirst for travel may well find you much farther afield this summer.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

You know you don’t need to spend a fortune on a holiday, don’t you, Pisces? A little caravan in a muddy field is all you need to get the party started.

Did someone forget to save up for their holiday, hmm, Taurus? Spent it all on yourself? Remember that a few less drinks = fun times in the sun.

A trip to Cornwall with the folks is all it takes to make you happy. Watch out for a cheeky local on the beach…

A star is born

“By giving people the power to share, we’re making the world more transparent.” Real Name : Mark Elliot Zuckerberg Born : 14th May, 1984

The star of any party, you’ll be the one downing the fire shots and dancing naked around a pole. Just remember alcohol, darkness and pools don’t mix particularly well.

You might want to invest in some waterproof mascara, Libra, and slather on the suncream if you want some photos to remember. Hot sun + heavy foundation = bad times.

Scooping up drunken messes from the pavement is your speciality, Sagittarius. You’ll be in your element on the sunset strip, believe me.

Keep on the safe side, Virgo. You know you’ll only ruin your holiday if you’re running back and forth to ‘el toilette’ due to a particularly vicious prawn.

Yes, that tasty looking waiter is making the eyes at you, Scorpio. Score.

Forget the obsessive passport/ suncream/ phone room key checks. RELAX - you’re on holiday.

In short, this means that you simply can’t afford to buy food! Richard Hodgson, Morrisons Group Commercial Director, says, “Budgeting shouldn’t mean having to compromise when it comes to the supermarket shop… all of our shoppers should be able to enjoy tasty, nutritious and varied meals”.

Money saving expert, Sarah Willingham, has these to tips for saving money whilst food shopping:

Morrisons’ M Savers range features a range of basic products, such as teabags and soup, as well as the household essentials, such as washing up liquid, with many products under £1, all available in store now.

..........................................................................................................................

Morrisons has also created a range of simple meal solutions to enable shoppers to create tasty, nutritious and varied dishes at great prices. Find the recipes and more information about the M Savers range at www.morrisons.co.uk/msavers.

Make sure you always go armed with a shopping list

Never go shopping on an empty stomach – you end up buying more

Don’t forget to look up and down when browsing the aisles so you can get a clear picture of all product options – don’t just go for the nearest product at eye level

Be aware of the supermarket layout – offers are often to be had at the end of the aisles, but sometimes you can seek out bargains elsewhere. And don’t be tempted by bargains at the checkout!

HOLIDAY ESSENTIALS Holiday packing is a very serious matter indeed. No one wants to find themselves at the airport without a passport, or even at the beach without a lilo. Therefore The Student Magazine has compiled an indespensible checklist to ensure all your precious items end up safely on the baggage carousel and not on your bedside table.

46.

1. Bottle Opener : You’ll never truly understand just how ingenious a simple bottle opener is until you find yourself without one 2. Fancy Dress : At least one outfit is required for the designated fancy dress night out 3. Passport : Probably the most important of all holiday items. No passport = no fun holiday times 4. Plug Adaptor : Your straighteners won’t work without one 5. Phone : Find out how much calls home will cost and remember to turn off 3G – roaming charges are a devil 6. Condoms : Better to be safe than sorry and you don’t know what ‘condom please’ is in Spanish 7. Hat : For those bad hair days after a dip in the pool 8. Camera : To record those unforgettable moments – remember your charger/ batteries/ memory card 9. Euros/ currency : You’ll need more than you bargained for! 10. Magazines : With which to pass the hours of sunbathing 11. Beach bag : For packing in those useful beachy items

12. After-Sun Lotion : To soothe those toasted shoulders 13. Printed Tshirts : Chav it up with a set of personalised Tshirts 14. Swimwear : One for every day of the week? 15. Plane Tickets/ Boarding Pass : No, they won’t let you on the plane even if you swear you had it ten minutes ago 16. Cleaning Wipes : More often than not you’ll have gone for the cheapest option, and no one wants to be bathing in filth. Mmm 17. Flip-Flops : Standard! 18. Lilo : Instead of buying a new one every single time you go abroad, pop one in your case. Perfect for comfort on the poolside 19. Phrasebook : Ensure you successfully receive a pint of lager with some local lingo 20. Phone Charger : No battery = nightmare 21. Sunglasses : Forget them and be forced to purchase a pair off the looky-looky men. 22. Suncream : You’ll thank Mum for forcing you to take it when you end up with 3 degree burns after the first day of over-eager sunbathing. 23. Beach Towel : Two towels are needed – one for getting sandy on the beach and one for after a shower

SNEAK PEEK This month’s smoking hot picks on the Sheffield student scene.

What? Harvester Where? The Oasis, Meadowhall, Sheffield, S9 1EP What did we eat? Flame Grilled Chicken Breast & Chicken Burger How much? £12 approx The average fried, and fatty takeaway sometimes just doesn’t cut it when you’re feeling particularly peckish. Harvester restaurants pride themselves on their grills and salads, so we popped down to the Meadowhall branch to pick up a spot of lunch. Harvester is slightly different to your usual takeaway – first you choose from the range of grills on the menu (ranging from ribs to burgers, but only one veggie option), then pick a sauce and a side. The food was ready to collect about 20 minutes after ordering by phone, and once at the restaurant we filled salad pots from the bar – a hefty choice ranging from sweetcorn to pasta to bread rolls. I went for the Flame-Grilled Chicken Breast, Harvester BBQ Dip and Baby Potatoes – the chicken was perfectly cooked and went well with the sauce, served with buttered peas - admittedly a little hard to capture inside the little cardboard box they came in! Baby potatoes were a nice alternative to chips, arriving hot and buttered. My partner opted for the Chicken Burger – a flame-grilled chicken breast in a rustic bread roll, with the Jack Daniel’s sauce; sweet and sticky with a hint of chilli – delicious. This was accompanied by Seasoned Fries; crisp and moreishly tasty. The Harvester Takeaway is literally a restaurant meal in a box – and only to be undertaken by the very hungry! I don’t think the salad is really necessary however as we were more than full after the main meal, but it was a great alternative to the usual boring sandwich at lunch.

Simply Fish & Chips

.................................................................

The tantalising aroma of freshly cooked fish and chips is often just too tempting to resist. New chippy Simply Fish & Chips has recently opened in the city centre, freshly cooking a range of salty treats. Pop in for all the goodies you’d expect from a British chippy – chips, cod, haddock, wholetail Whitby scampi, fishcakes, sausages and pies – and Simply Fish & Chips also tempts with their Daily Specials, with meals from just £2.30. With a 10% student discount, Simply Fish & Chips might just become your new favourite takeaway! 44 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2JP - Telephone: 0114 275 3261

Labrinth Electronic Earth

The Futureheads Rant

Nicki Minaj Pink Friday…Roman Reloaded

After the explosive success of 2011’s ‘Earthquake’ featuring Tinie Tempah, following their collaboration back in 2010 on the infamous ‘Pass Out’, Labrinth’s (British producer and singer Timothy McKenzie) presence in the music world is stronger than ever, and hype for his debut album has been massive.

An entirely a capella (solely created with vocals, no other instruments) album is certainly a brave and original choice for this Sunderland post-punk band, who usually just incorporate the style into their upbeat, guitar-led sound. Yet after four studio albums, the band decided it was time to take the plunge.

Absurd, a little unhinged and the closest thing to a walking publicity stunt since Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj has, over the last two years, taken the world by storm. Is she a rapper? Is she a singer? Is she hip hop? Is she bubblegum pop? Well, after a full listen of ‘Pink Friday… Roman Reloaded’, we’re really none the wiser.

The album as a whole is diverse and refreshing. From the summery goodness of ‘Let The Sun Shine’ and bass-heavy chaos of ‘Earthquake’ to the soul-influenced ‘Express Yourself ’ and vocal-exposing, delicate balladry of ‘Beneath You’re Beautiful’ (featuring Emeli Sandé), this album features influences from a far wider range of genres than you would expect to find in such a radio-friendly artist’s debut.

‘Rant’ contains covers such as The Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Meet Me Halfway’ (which seems to lack something that the original has – and not simply the surrounding instrumentation), Richard Thompson’s ‘Beeswing’ (which takes an intimate acoustic song and turns it into a livelier folk ditty with added jazzy fingerclicking), and of course Kelis’ ‘Acapella’ (which works fairly well compared to some of the album’s other tracks). It also contains a capella versions of some of the band’s own songs – notably ‘Meantime’, which suits the style perfectly. However the a capella version of their own, ‘Heartbeat Song’, gets it spot on with the lyric, “we’re singing out of tune” – unfortunately a sentiment applicable to most of the album.

Clearly, she’s talented in her lyric-writing, although many of the lyrics leave you worrying for her sanity. Particularly during, ‘Come on a Cone’. The album seems to generally be split into sections – after the erratic, poppy opener, ‘Roman Holiday’, the rest of the first half stays very hip-hop-orientated. However at track 10 – ‘Starships’, thumping radio/club anthem of the moment complete with absolutely mental, angry, synthy euro-pop breakdown – the album falls headfirst into a realm of unashamedly bouncy pop verse/chorus glory. This continues with ‘Pound the Alarm’, ‘Whip It’ (a catchy highlight) and just about every other song for the remainder of the album.

In fact, ‘Express Yourself ’ stands out as not only one of the best tracks on the album, but also one of the most original in comparison to its surrounding tracks. Its lyrics are the opposite of the egocentric lyrics you hear in much of today’s pop. Labrinth himself also sounds different to most of the rest of the album and this is just one example of what is certainly a refreshing dive into a wide variety of styles for the very capable singer, writer and producer. (Release date 2nd April 2012)

Overall, the album is bearable and even has some enjoyable parts, but ultimately it is probably something that the band themselves will feel glad to have achieved - after having “dreamt of ” making it since recording their debut – than something fans and potential Futureheads converts will go crazy for.

Nicki Minaj has become a superstar across the world and many of her songs are incredibly catchy as well as unique. The album on the whole is worth a listen. If only she would just stop with the “British” accent… (Release date 2nd April 2012)

SHEFFIELD ALL STARS going deeper underground

Liam O’Shea (Loshea) Dan Sane nights are becoming the ultimate underground warehouse parties in Sheffield. We caught up with Liam O’Shea, artist and founder of Dan Sane, to discover how it all came about

.......................................................................................... So how did it all begin?

I started playing guitar as a kid, inspired by Jimi Henderix, then by my late teens I was bang into raving (late 80s). I started dj-ing in the early 90s at The Arches in Sheffield, at a techno night called, ‘No Logic’. Then I moved to drum and bass for a while as a resident at NY Sushi and Drum & Bass Arena. I signed to Formation Records, released as Grasscutter and Oshay. At the same time, I was working in what is now Plug, which used to be called The Capital. I did a house night there (all whilst doing drum and bass too), with my partner at the time, Ruth Joy. We both dj-ed, and we also did a hip hop night called ‘All In’, and played for clubs like Phonetics and The Tuesday Club. I started Mixed In Sheffield in 2009 to chart the electronic landscape of Sheffield and encourage collaboration in the arts, then I started Downlo two years ago with my partners Ryan and Dan. We opened our own warehouse venue a year ago and Dan Sane was born.

You DJ/ promote the Dan Sane deep house soiree once a month - where did the name Dan Sane come from?

Dan Sane is many things, depending on how you say it or what music you like it can mean many things. I have a deep love of original American Dance music - blues, boogie, rock ‘n’ roll - and jazz, they form the cornerstones of modern music. Dan Sane (September 22, 1896 – February 18, 1956) was an American Memphis and country blues guitarist and songwriter.

There’s a lot of competition in Sheffield for the underground dance scene - what sets you apart?

We have our own venue which we have got purely to do this one night and we only open once a month. We have a consistent booking policy, firmly rooted in underground electronic music; if you understand the subtleties of this form you will understand that we don’t have a scatter gun approach to booking. We don’t just book people because they are “so hot right now”, we are all artists too and we’ve all been doing what we do for years, as thorough music heads with years of experience across multiple genres, and come together now for the common love of house and techno. We have our own sound system and we play mainly off vinyl, as do most of the people we book.

Which was the first venue you played at? And where is your favourite venue you’ve played at?

The first venue is The Arches in Sheffield (pre Gatecrasher). The favourite venue is Dan Sane, it’s our home and we love it - I love it. I love the vibes in that place, big time.

TRACKS TO WATCH Hellraiser by Anne Savage Remixed by Steelz

‘ It’s like a cross between Adam Beryer, Marcell Dettman and Richie Hawtin’

Roughneck Ting on Seghdha

‘a UK take on Berlin Techno....like SHED meets Blawan meets Blawan’

What’s your current track to watch? ‘Roughneck Ting’ on SEGHDHA .

Apart from being a DJ, what else do you do outside of the deep house scene? I run MIxed in Sheffield, and I’m working hard on this year’s album: ‘Crossing The Line’. It’s an Olympic themed remix album with 39 bands, 39 remixers, and 39 pieces of cover art, one for each remix. I’ve got a launch event on 23rd June at Yellow Arch and a closing event at The Washington for Tramlines. I also do a rock ‘n’ roll night, “The Boom Boom Room”. I’ve done it for over five years now, it’s currently at the Frog and Parrot on alternate Saturdays. It’s lots of 40s, 50s and 60s tackle, original American dance music (I’m talking John Lee Hooker through to Little Richard and Bo Diddley, then moving through the years via Hendrix and The Doors to the present day, with local legends Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods or Seasick Steve. I love this music, but then again, I love a lot of stuff. I’m a total music nut. Outside of music I like to travel, keep fit, film and reading.

Dan Sane is a pretty happy go lucky place from my experience, you can do whatever you like in there and everyone loves each other. How do you keep the vibe going without attracting the common riff raff?

(Laughs) Your words not mine. All I can say is that we’ve kind of run the club on attraction rather than promotion. We have tried to keep it low key so only those who really like this music will come. It’s not a high street joint it’s a back alley warehouse for party freaks and underground music lovers. It’s not so obvious, but who wants to do obvious? www.mixedinsheffield.co.uk

Marvel’s Avengers Assemble

PG13; sci-fi violence and action throughout Director: Joss Whedon

...............................................................................

Avengers Assemble is a poor title for one of the year’s biggest releases - the dynamism of the earth’s greatest superhero squad tempered by an Ikea verb, that’s before British promotions were forced to tack “Marvel’s” in front of it to avoid confusing any Ian Hendry fans – it’s not half as tantalising as say, The Dark Knight. Whilst Marvel Comics can do spectacle at the drop of a hat, they have long stood in the shadow of DC and its imprints when it comes to character pieces (with a few notable exceptions of course), Cue writer/director Joss Whedon, Buffy creator, comic book writer and all round geek-guru, whose only other cinematic outing, Serenity, was a vastly underrated sci-fi gem.

Recommends

When Asgardian drop-out Loki launches an attack on earth, it’s up to Nick Fury - Director General of S.H.I.E.L.D - to round up the planet’s most powerful superheroes, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America, forging the greatest, most dysfunctional fighting team since the Entente Cordiale. The Avengers solo films have varied greatly in quality – Iron Man 2 is stunning, Captain America, disappointing, and juggling all these huge personalities in one film is a task so daunting, it verges on Sisyphan. Miraculously, Whedon just about pulls it off, fleshing out each character in equal measure; plumping out some rolls (Black Widow), and reining in others (Iron Man, though Downey Jr. still steals the show), infusing the whole thing with his trademark wit. If you haven’t seen the solo films you might feel a little lost to begin with, but the film is punchy, funny and much better than it ever needed to be.

Did you know?

. Lou Ferrigno voices the Hulk in this film. He has played the Hulk in almost every

live-action version since 1978; he played the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk and its subsequent three TV specials, and he voiced the Hulk in the big-screen The Incredible Hulk (he was seen in Hulk but it was a cameo role as a security guard, which he repeated in The Incredible Hulk ). He also has voiced the Hulk in various animated productions.

. This is the first Marvel film to be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

The Cabin in the Woods Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance: Blu-ray Release date: 25-06-2012

.................................................

Woman in Black Release date: 18-06-2012

.................................................

Rated 15: strong bloody horror violence and gore Director: Drew Goddard

.................................................................................................................................................................. We’re obliged to open a review of The Cabin in the Woods with a disclaimer; “The less you know about this film, the better”. So although this review will be a spoiler-free zone, The Cabin in the Woods, is most rewarding to those who enter blind. The directorial début of screenwriter Drew Goddard (Lost, Cloverfield) who co-scripts here with cult-hero, Joss Wheedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly), Cabin in the Woods is a meta-horror in the same vein as Wes Craven’s Scream, simultaneously conforming to and skewing the archetypal American horror story. The premise is all too familiar, five teens; a jock, a bad girl, a geek, a stoner and a virgin head out for a

hedonistic weekend in the eponymous cabin (eerily reminiscent of the Evil Dead shack). It doesn’t take long of course before things start to go awry; from the creepy gas attendant they meet along the way, to the bizarre, unsettling artefacts adorning the basement. As the teens’ tale as old as time unfolds, we are introduced to two white collar workers, who it appears are controlling proceedings from some hightech complex; all is, naturally, not as it seems. Whilst the ground that The Cabin in the Woods treads isn’t necessarily new (see the likes of My Little Eye, or the underrated Wes Craven’s New Nightmare), it is done with a sheen and pizazz not seen before, and importantly, it’s a great deal of fun.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists Rated U Director: Steven Vinacour

.................................................................................................................................................................. Anything that bears the stamp of Aardman Animations comes with a certain amount of expectation. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists marks the Aardman team’s first stop motion feature since the stunning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005. With a script adapted by Gideon Defoe from the first two books in his Pirates! series, the film follows the misfortunes of a group of calamitous pirates, led by the bumbling Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) - whilst on a desperate, disastrous rampage to win the much coveted Pirate of the Year Award, the pirates happen upon Charles Darwin’s Beagle. When Darwin spots that The Pirate Captain’s parrot is in fact the last remaining - thus highly valuable - Dodo, the pirates join forces with the boffin and his highly intelligent chimp Mr Bobo, but it’s not long before the crew fall afoul of the villainous Queen Victoria.

Whilst Aardman’s past two CGI driven efforts, Flushed Away and Arthur Christmas, retained all of the companys trademark, distinctly British wit, the return to thumbprint-heavy stop motion adds a warmth and charm to Pirates! that adds to the experience greatly. Hugh Grant is on the best form he has been in years, voicing the Monty Python-eqsue lead, and the strength of the supporting cast is astounding. Pirates! is a quirky, fast-paced, highly intelligent farce, in the most traditional sense of the word. We’ve yet to see how Brave will turn out, but with the hugely underwhelming Cars 2, maybe it’s time for Pixar to step down and let Aardman take their rightful place as kings of the animated feature.

Expect fireworks. Expect excitement. Expect more than a little bit of spine-shivering wonder. But most of all, expect the finest house and techno the world has to offer as drumro[ll], Cargo and Collect! collide in a supernova of raw dancing. I’d start stretching up now, it’s going to be a biggy.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

Fancy spicing yourself up with a bit of body art? For a unique bit of ink, look no further than Good Vibrations Tattoo in Crookes, who are offering students a 10% discount with NUS. Specialising in portrait, biomec and fantasy designs, the Good Vibrations tattooists each have a unique style and talent to create something special for their clients. You won’t see any flash adorning the walls here though – all the designs are custom-drawn, with the artists helping you to create stunning designs, whether you know exactly what you want or need a bit of inspiration to make your ideas come to life. Having been open since January, Good Vibrations houses four tattooists, two laser technicians, one body piercer and two apprentices. Artists Nikk, Kev, Rob and Adam are some of the finest artists in the business, each with their own individual style and skills. Kev has even tattooed celebrities like Rizzle Kicks, Fugitive and Paddy Considine, and with Adam having tattooed Steel Panther’s drummer, you know you’re in good hands! Offering more than just tattoos however, Good Vibrations also offers a range of piercing including ear, upper body, facial and tongue, plus skin divers and surface piercing. Piercer Jem is also a wiz with the spray tan and laser lipo is coming soon, so watch this space. Having second thoughts about an existing tatt? As specialists in laser tattoo removal, the team will eradicate any regrets by erasing an unwanted tattoo, or, combined with their cover-up skills they can transform a design.

Laser removal from £20 a session

Good Vibrations also stocks a range of merchandise, t-shirts and body jewellery, plus custom artwork is for sale by local artist Mute. A striking artist, his work is inspired by popular culture and cult icons of the past, for example Chunk from The Goonies and Back To The Future, with some pieces even accredited by the artists themselves. The studio is even featuring in a ‘Sheffield Ink’ broadcast, with filming taking place at Good Vibrations. The footage is due to aired soon, so keep up to date with the team on Facebook for broadcast details! Pop down to their studio to discuss what the team at Good Vibrations can do for you and prepare to dazzle with a spot of stunning ink.
