WELCOME Students. Hello. Freshers Week has passed us in a haze of alcohol infused giddiness, an overload of freebies and a snooze of missed lectures. November has appeared. Happily ensconced in your halls, the last thing on your mind is looking for somewhere to live for next year. But now is the time to get to grips with the property search for 2012-2013; to sniff out the top pads you have to get in there early. But don’t start to panic – we’ve compiled the ultimate student property guide to nudge you gently through the property picking problem. And for a cheeky treat especially for you, we’ve tracked down none other than platinum selling Steps as they burst back into pop with their Ultimate Collection and tour. Read on and embrace your guilty pleasure. On top of all that we’ve packed in some cringe worthy Freshers Week confessions and a delving interview with TV comedy favourite Mark Watson, plus all your favourites from Studentstrology to Blogged to What A Gwan. So settle down in the back row of the lecture hall, turn over the page and squirm with unadulterated pleasure as The Student’s magical words and pictures bring sorcery to your eyes. Kate Hobson

What A Gwan?

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Give It A Go

As usual, there are many different and diverse ‘Give It a Go’ events taking place around Sheffield Uni in November. Whatever your interests are you are bound to be able to find something new and interesting to try out. There are visits to Newcastle, Stratford, Cardiff and Edinburgh which will be a great chance to sight see and to make new friends. Or maybe you feel like you need a new hobby? Well whether it’s learning sign language, Spanish or having a go at traditional Bulgarian dance (not for everyone I am sure!) you’re guaranteed to find something exciting to do. Take advantage of the new opportunities on offer and start something new this university year. You only live once after all.

Bar One Events

Bar one has re-launched and it looks better than ever and the same goes for its nights out. Reloaded on Saturday night is 00s and 90s disco party full of the best party anthems from when you were younger. If you’re feeling nostalgic and you also want to take advantage of the great drinks prices then Reloaded is the place to be. If you’re partial to the more recent club hits then Bring It On on a Wednesday night is right for you or Ignition every Friday if dubstep is more your thing. Whether it’s a pre-bar before a big night out or you plan to stay ‘til close at 1am, Bar One is the place to be this November.

Keeping Fit The Fun Way

There are many fun and alternative ways to get fit and if the gym is not for you and you want to find a new way of exercising then why not try one of many fitness and dance classes on offer at your union. If you’ve heard the hype about the Zumba workout and are intrigued, then try it out at the union on Friday 25th November, perfect for those who like to have fun yet want the benefits of a full workout. There are also classes in salsa, burlesque and belly dance, which can help you keep fit, get you making new friends and perhaps help discovering skills you never knew you had.

There’s no need to stray away from University this November - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union...

HALLAM UNIVERSITY Football at the Hubs

For all football fans out there, all throughout November major premiership football matches are being shown in the Hubs and entry is completely free! There are also the usual great drinks prices so you can enjoy watching the game and a beer at the same time. On 12th November there is even a trip to go and watch a Manchester United match; tickets are only £15 so if you are a huge fan of the team, or just fancy a day out in a different city then get your ticket while you can.

Entourage

Looking for a cheap and student friendly club night on a Saturday? Then look no further, because Entourage at Hallam Union is one of the biggest nights of the weekend in Sheffield. Expect three arenas, fantastic DJs and cheap entry price and drinks. Whether you like club anthems, dubstep, pop, drum and bass or indie, there is a room to suit your tastes. There is something for everyone and with tickets at only £4 when bought in advance, it is definitely not worth staying in on a Saturday night. If you’re really eager, then pop down to Bar Phoenix beforehand and enjoy the official pre-bar.

Eat Well This Winter

Whether you’re in need of a quick snack or the full works there are many cheap and tasty bites on offer in Hallam Union. If you feel like a light lunch then get yourself to pod4 where you can choose from an array of sandwiches, salads and paninis and also many choices of milkshakes and smoothies. Your union knows how students worry about money and have made the prices reasonable enough for everyone to afford. Bar Phoenix has loads on offer and is the place to go if you fancy something a bit more filling, there are great 20% offers on certain meals too!

With two universities, there’s loads of student areas and properties in Sheffield, and everyone’s student friendly. For Hallam, the main areas are city centre, Ecclesall Road and Hunters Bar, and es for the University of Sheffield, Broomhill, Crook and Walkley. Bear in mind what’s important to you – city centre shops, pubs, library, bars – being in walking distance means less spent on bus, taxi and tram fare.

Whether you choose to live with your current flatmates or someone new, decide now so you can search for the right size house and decide on a budget to suit everyone. You can choose to go with a private landlord but we recommend you stick to agents who especially deal with student properties. They fully understand your situation and their rents are reasonably priced, usually including bills and contents insurance so you don’t need to worry about a thing.

What does the total rent include? Can we pay less for the smaller bedroom? When does the tenancy start and finish? Can we stay over the summer? How much is the deposit? If anything breaks will the landlord fix it for free? Is the rent monthly, quarterly or annually? There’s so many student properties that even if you don’t find one straight away, you won’t be without anywhere to live next year. On your own? Don’t worry – look out for groups advertising for extra housemates, or try privately owned student accommodation complexes like Unite and Opal, where you can apply for one room in a flat.

Sex and the Steel City: “One Night Stands” Kate Hobson The whim of a singleton and the result of a booze-fuelled night on the tiles. Faced with the never-ending ocean of unfamiliar (and more often than not satisfyingly attractive) faces, as a new student in the age of free love you’re put under the impression that one night stands are the norm; the more fellow students you ensare in your trap the better. However the impression you make in Freshers Week is, more often that not, the impression that sticks throughout your entire University stay. Forever finding a different bedraggled girl wandering the corridor at 8am having been kicked out from your flatmate’s bed? Discover various bashful guys shuffling into the bathroom every morning? Yep, they’re the results of your friskiest flatmates’ most recent nights out. The positive of one night stands? (Almost) guaranteed action with no annoying relationship headache. The negatives? The attached stigma (see above), the knowledge you’ve been used and abused (or the user and abusers), the chance that your nostrings-attached fumble may have been interpreted as true love and near enough marriage proposal, the threat of a nasty STI lurking under the covers. And who could forget the legendary walk of shame? Then there’s the awkward morning situation. Beer goggles are a wicked vice and waking up to something not even vaguely resembling what you went to sleep with is a scary prospect. Should you stay for/ offer breakfast? Are you obliged to send a follow-up text or see them again? Should you offer to pay their bus fare home? Ah – the everlasting conundrums of student life.

Fashionista: “Keen On Jean” Sophie Bromley Piazza Last month, my 85 year old nan spent £170 on a pair of jeans. It wasn’t a snap investment. She’d researched and tried and tested until she found the perfect pair. Apparently, this particular pair lifted, stretched and tightened in all the right places and she was prepared to splash some serious cash for the desired outcome. My family’s reaction was of amusement, horror and shock, but it made me think. People will pay decent money for a pair of trousers, usually worn casually and made from cotton. We are a nation obsessed with the denim trousers. And it’s not just because, with the average person owning around six pairs because they are a useful, popular item of clothing. But why? Why do we form such a strong bond with a pair of jeans? To quote a recent article, one in 12 Britons keep a pair of jeans that they no longer wear simply for ‘sentimental reasons’. Meaning that we don’t simply love them to wear. We just plain love them. Maybe as a reminder that your waist was once that tiny, or perhaps to relive the fantastic times you had whilst wearing them, either way, jeans have become part of our lives, not just our wardrobe. The UK jeans market is expected to reach a value of more than £2billion pounds next year, so our love affair has a definite future for years to come. Whether you’re sporting a washed out, lovingly worn pair or are experimenting with this season’s indigo shades and flared bottoms, here’s to denim jeans. And long may they reign.

Night Owl: “Halloween was Deep” Shane Gilmartin

The night started like any other night really - very early. 2pm at a friend’s house, and after a lot of fiendish activities we headed into town around 8pm.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

We started at Boudica up at the top end of West Street; I didn’t even find this place until a few weeks ago, up a side road up past Cavendish. Look out for the blonde girl who’s always outside Cavendish, handing out vouchers to get you unbelievable drink offers - I can recall one is a free shot of anything, not just the usual Corky’s but absinthe, sambuca, Goldshläger - whichever you’re into, and buy one get one free on mixers. The only downfall in that place though is the DJ – it’s just generic boring dance, nothing out of the ordinary. I like a deep house vibe personally so after finishing our drinks we moved on. The Great Gatsby was next on the agenda but that was a no-go because my mate was wearing a hat… He refused to take it off as he’d shaved his head to look like Mr T (bit of a bummer) so we headed on down to the newly reopened Fez Club, which from my younger clubbing days was a heaven for all those underground house fiends (myself included). However, yet again my friend’s hat let us down but as the rest of the lads were already in I wasn’t one to leave a trooper behind, so we headed to Dan Sane. Walking down we could already hear the music blaring out of the venue from up the road! Located behind the old Niche nightclub, around the back of Decathlon, seek and you shall find - the venue itself is an old rundown factory-looking building with a lick of white paint, but that’s what gives it a purely unique feel every last Saturday of the month. The setup in there is amazing - massive soundsystem which is amazing when stood at the front but doesn’t fill the whole venue; you can have a chat at the back by the bar. The bar is just a small box area but the drink prices are brilliant: £3 for a can of Red Stripe, £2.50 for a vodka mixer (including Redbull). I think this is a place where they actually care that you have enough money in your pocket to quench your thirst at any time without running out to the nearest bank machine. The night lasted until 6am - a beast. Ending with Loshea doing a sick set, we stayed until the end and were some of the last ones out.

With a doormat overloaded with takeaway menus, choosing where to order from can be a terrifying prospect. Fear no more – here at The Student we’re no stranger to food by phone so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to review what the city’s fooderies have to offer – all in the name of research, of course. What? Jerk Central Where? Cemetery Road, S11 8FJ (near Waitrose) What did we eat? Jerk chicken with rice, peas and dumpling How much? £5, dumplings £1 extra With winter drawing ever closer, a bit of Jamaican spice is a welcome warm up. Jerk Central has recently opened up to offer Caribbean flavours, freshly cooked delights and real jerk marinades. For £5 the jerk chicken meal is massive – three pieces of chicken, rice and peas (coconut rice with kidney beans), coleslaw and salad, with a dumpling thrown in on top – enough for two! Cooked traditionally on a charcoal drum, the chicken had a satisfyingly barbecued taste, easily pulled off the bone, succulent with the slightly spicy jerk flavour soaked all the way through after being massaged in and marinated overnight. The rice was perfectly cooked, light and moist with a tinge of coconut, with the generous amount of salad adding a pleasant, fresh crunch. Jerk Central’s coleslaw is home-made, a favourite with the regulars! The dumpling was not what I was expected – more like a doughnut, sweet and bready but a welcome sweet finish. Unlike the usual takeaway, jerk chicken is much healthier – a winning mix of protein and carbs, making Jerk Central a favourite with athletes and even heavyweight boxer Richard Towers. Everything is cooked freshly on the spot with nothing re-used. With the rest of the menu including ackee and salt fish, curry goat, fried parrot fish and snapper with scotch bonnets and onion, Jerk Central offers a touch of sunshine flavour to Sheffield.

The Hee Haw Sessions has flourished this year with acts like Doug Paisley and Herman Dune; they bring their promoting magic to Sheffield from Autumn. LUS IVE Interview

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

Although you might not want to admit it, you can all remember the dance routine for One For Sorrow… after a few vodka shots out come the moves.

With two number one albums, multi-platinum awards and sixteen single releases throughout their five year domination of the charts from 1997-2001, Steps are back with a bang. Their comeback album ‘The Ultimate Collection’ stormed straight in at Number One, Sky Living’s ‘Steps: The Reunion’ documentary has brought the group back into the public eye and their tour is set to sell out. Cheesy pop lovers at heart, The Student Magazine jumped at the chance of a chat with Faye Tozer, Lee Latchford-Evans and Ian ‘H’ Watkins.

How does this morning find you?

Faye: Really busy, just like the old times really! It’s like we’ve just picked up from where we left off. Tired after switching on the Christmas lights at the Manchester Trafford Centre last night, it was a bit of a late one! But the support and response has been overwhelming, really nice to be back.

Steps were massive back in your heyday. Did you miss those times?

Faye: Well we’re just getting back to where we were, it’s like we’ve never been away! It was good to have a breather from each other and some space.

What’s been the biggest achievement in your career so far?

What can we expect from you second time round? Have you got any new songs in the pipeline?

H: Well our tour is called The Ultimate Collection so it’s just that – all the hits. This time it’s different though as the things possible for a tour have technically advanced and all our dreams and ideas are now achievable.

Steps’ Ultimate Tour comes to The Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield in April. Will this just be covering past hits or will there be some new songs in there?

Faye: It’s focusing on our past hits and it’s amazing and overwhelming the response we’ve had. We’re in Sheffield on the 15th of April and had to add a second date on 27th April due to demand, I’m gobsmacked by how we’ve been received.

Lee: Performing on the West End stage, I went to theatre school so it’s a big thing for me and always what I’d wanted to do. H: Me too – it had always been my dream to perform on the West End stage and since I was 9 I’ve been involved in amateur dramatics and dreaming of the West End, then at 27 I played the lead in Joseph! Faye: We’re all very much into theatre and we’ve had so many amazing experiences in our lives, like winning a Brit Award for the most running Wembley show. I’m so excited for what’s to come and can’t believe The Ultimate Collection went in at Number One! We’ve all got multi-platinum awards on our walls! H: And we’re also the only band to have albums in three consecutive decades!

Do you think you’ll hit a whole new generation of Steps fans?

Which was your favourite song you’ve released? Which do you love to perform?

(All laugh) H: Oh yeah, they have our songs! Lee: I think I’ve casually walked past just as some girls have been dancing to 5,6,7,8… Faye: I’ve been on them before but I don’t think I’d do it to my own song!

Faye: We’ve been doing a lot of TV appearances and the most popular are Tragedy, Deeper Shade of Blue, Way You Make Me Feel… I do like Deeper Shade of Blue, that’s one of our favourites, it’s a bit of a cooler song! H: What’s your favourite? Me: Well Tragedy of course, whenever that comes on I’m up dancing! Oh and 5,6,7,8 – what about 5,6,7,8? All: Ohh no! H: Really? Faye: We have a bit of a love/hate relationship with 5,6,7,8! It was our first song so it’s a bit of a special one!

What have you been up to in the years you’ve been away from the public spotlight? H: Well theatre… and Lee has his own business, don’t you, Lee? Lee: Yes Famously Fit, I’ve been fitness based since Steps and I’m the male face of OK! Famously Fit. So I’ll be getting everyone in Steps in shape for the tour! Faye: Oh I bet you’ll love that won’t you H… H: Ohhh…

Did you spend time together as friends in the years after you’d split? Faye: Yes, it was a tough split but we’ve been to each others’ wedding and christenings and shows etc. It’s funny though as we’d never all been in the same room together until we started the TV show!

So how did that come about? Did someone approach you or did you just all decide one day?

Faye: Well we’d decided to release The Ultimate Collection, to uphold the legacy then the offer of a TV documentary came up so we thought we’d like to support it. I mean we’ve had lots of similar offers in the past but this one came at the right time and it all fell into place. We didn’t think this would lead to a tour so that’s amazing.

Lee: Well when we were at the Trafford Centre last night I was amazed by all the young fans but I think it might have been their mums pushing them forward! The TV show has helped a lot I think but we had loads of 10 and 9 year olds asking for autographs and photos. Faye: I think there’s not really any acts like us out in the market at the moment who parents can introduce to their kids, appealing to all the family. And they can learn the routines and everything!

What about the dance mats at arcade places? They play your songs like 5,6,7,8? Do you ever have a go?

I always choose 5,6,7,8 when I go on… H: Really? Are you any good?

Of course, I hit all the marks!

H: (Laughs) I’d probably get the worst mark ever for my own routine!

Ok, just some quick questions for you now: Which member of Steps is… … the biggest flirt?

Faye: Lee or Lisa! Lee: Oh well yes, I do like to give a nice smile…!

…the greediest?

Faye: In what way? With food? H: I do like a good pudding… Faye: Yes, H!

…the one who’s always late?

Lee: Claire! Even if she arrived first she’d be the last to be ready.

…the shopaholic? (All) Claire!

Steps will be playing at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on the 15th April and 27th April 2012 so get your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

24 hour comedy shows, Edinburgh Fringe Festival regular, TV appearances on Mock The Week, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Have I Got News For You… is there no end to Mark Watson’s comedic prowess? Currently zig-zagging across the UK on the Mark Watson Live tour, Mark is a busy man. We managed to grab a quick ten minutes with him midst commute to bombard him with some probing questions, re his show at Buxton Opera House.

So you’re currently in the midst of the Mark Watson Live Tour. How’s this going so far? Are you loving the life of a roving stage star?

I’m really enjoying it so far, lots of travelling but I don’t mind that! For example I went from North Wales back to London and then I’m off up to Chester after that. It’s good to have my own audience as they’ve come to see me rather than just a random comedy gig.

Which has been the best gig so far?

Good question – I had a good time in Shrewsbury in Shropshire, I’d never been there before and the audience was really enthusiastic and seemed really up for it! Another good show was at Borden, the stage was really close to the audience and the intimacy was great, I like performing in a cosy room.

Have there been any cheeky hagglers or have you been well received?

No not really, there was one guy in Nottingham a few months back who was giving a bit of a haggle from the balcony… I think he was pretty drunk though and he got chucked out or taken home or something!

Are you one of those comedians who picks on the front row or are these seats safe?

No, I tend to leave the front row alone, people sat here seem self-conscious enough already! I can see the fear in their eyes. I chat to them if they get involved themselves but I don’t pick on anyone.

How do you come up with your material and how long has it taken for you to come up with the complete show? Do you keep adding and changing as you go along?

Yes it varies as I go along, if you keep to a strict script it gets a bit mechanical. I elaborate more on stories and changing the shows quite a lot keeps it much more interesting for both the audience and me!

Do you change your shows for different cities?

Sometimes I do, if I’ve been there before I can include some local knowledge, I try to make it relevant to the audience. Sometimes I include amusing things I’ve spotted through the day.

You came to Buxton Opera House on the 30th October – what can audiences expect from future shows on the tour? Stuff from my TV shows and general stuff and as I spent a lot of time travelling probably revolving around transport and rude people and just petty stuff really! Nothing heavy or wider issues, just my personal moans and gripes.

You’ve got a wealth of experience in various forms of comedy – TV, stage, radio – which is your favourite and why? I think I do prefer being on the stage, you have the freedom to talk about what you want and much more control over it. For example, being on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow on BBC – you record about 20 minutes but it all gets edited and cut down so you have no say over what actually gets aired. And with live shows you can relate with the audience and hear them laugh! Even with a studio audience you have no idea how it’s being received by the people watching at home.

You’ve also written some novels – are these along the comedy line or something different? My novels are something completely different – bigger subjects and quite dark.

Your wife is a fellow writer and performer – have you ever worked together or would you like to in the future?

We have worked together a bit in the past but I like to keep my work and home life separate, when you’re married you see each other enough! We watch each other’s work though and make suggestions.

WE’VE DIALLED ‘G’ FOR GAMES, AND OUR KNOWLEDGEABLE REVIEWER SHOWED UP, RARING TO PUT FINGERTIPS TO LAPTOP AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT... WELL, ISN’T. CHECK OUT HIS APPRAISALS OF SOME RECENT RELEASES.

Driver: San Francisco PS3, XBOX 360, PC

Driver’s been out in the wilderness for years. The poorly received laughing-stock that was Driver 3 - which, when you were behind the wheel and not wandering around on-foot, was pretty decent, started to slump in the eyes of the media and fans and since then its developers haven’t dared submit a high-profile entry in the series. In need of addressing above all else is the mystifying set-up which determines the events and objectives - After a rather severe crash within the game’s opening minutes, your hero is left consigned to a hospital bed and in a comatose state. Events continue to play out regardless... baffled? You will be. Our hero has somehow been bestowed with the most inexplicable super-power of all-time: he can warp into the body of anyone in the city - and become them - as long as they are behind the wheel of an automobile of some description at the time. Effin’ nuts. It’s ludicrous, but is to be commended for trying something original, and in pure gameplay terms it does has a great deal degree of validity. Through the driving alone - all engine-growling, tyre-smoking, curb-mounting, vehicle-smashing car chases worthy of the silver-screen - Reflections have managed to bring to life a thousand fantasies of Corgi wielding schoolboys the breadth of the country. It simply hasn’t been this much fun to drive cars in games in a good while.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

PS3, XBOX 360, PC

Dear reader, do you know anyone who plays games but only buys and plays one game per year? No? So what’s with the media’s obsession with awarding Brownie points for value-for-money by way of game variety in their reviews? The jack-of-all-trades that caters to one’s every gaming want in a solitary package is never going to happen, you know... nor is it needed. Case in point: Deus Ex Human Revolution. The game’s world is nicely realised and a pleasantly detailed place to explore, with a large number of (admittedly samey) missions and side-quests to attempt and loads of characters to batter your ears with yawnsome exposition, if you care to unearth it. Indeed, Deus Ex’s brand of quite uneventful, meandering towards an ending 30 hours or so away is certainly good as a time-killer, but you need to be a certain kind of person to enjoy that.

Around £20, free delivery, www.amazon.co.uk Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Missing Link DLC By the time you read this, new content for Deus Ex Human Revolution will be available, The Missing Link adds an extra 5-7 hours of gameplay designed to fill in a gap in Human Revolution’s story, detailing what happens to Adam Jensen aboard a cargo ship during his journey from Heng Sha to Singapore.

FLICKS TAKE AN INSIGHT INTO THE THOUGHTS OF THE STUDENT MAGAZINE CRITICS AS THEY PICK AND PROD TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LATEST RELEASES.

Jane Eyre Director Cary Fukunaga (Cert. PG) After an unforgiving childhood and stern education, the moral and individualistic Jane Eyre takes residence as a governess at the palatial Thornfield Hall where she cares for the young ward of the wealthy, Byronic, Lord Edward Rochester. Whilst Rochester at first seems cold and abrupt, he and Jane grow close, eventually falling in love; Rochester however harbours a terrible secret that threatens to bring an end to their happiness. Adapting a classic piece of literature comes with essential baggage; the makers of the film are tasked with condensing the plot, along with all the complexities and characterisation which the scope of a novel affords, into two hours of screen time. Furthermore, the film must offer something new to the countless adaptations that have come before. Jane Eyre is a film of subtleties; the watercolour palette gives an earthy hue to the stunning landscapes; it manages to be wholly modern without resorting to gimmickry and is a world away from the bright polish of the Merchant-Ivory period drama. It’s a delight to hear the beautiful 19th Century lexicon spoken in robust Yorkshire tongues and whilst the low-key approach occasionally slows the film down, Mia Wasikowska gives the most affecting and believable performance of the heroine on screen to date.

FLICKS Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Director Tomas Alfredson (Cert. 15) Director Tomas Alfredson’s, Let The Right One In, was among the best films of the last decade, == =promising of great things to come. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, his first English-language film, adapts the 1974 John la Carré novel of the same name, and boy does it deliver - George Smiley (Gary Oldman), formerly a British intelligence officer operating in the upper echelons of the Secret Service during the height of Cold War paranoia, is drawn out of retirement and tasked with uncovering a suspected double-agent working for the Soviets amongst his former colleges. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an intricate Rubik’s Cube of a movie, only instead of garish reds and blues, each side is composed of bleak greys and nicotine browns; in the hands of a lesser director the film could be a thoroughly dull affair, Alfredson however makes each scene crackle and fizz with palpable tension. The stellar British cast wring out the very best of the taught screenplay; Oldman excels in a rare leading role, Tom Hardy continues to prove he is the most exciting British actor in recent memory and the criminally underused Kathy Burke gives a stirring turn as an eccentric former spy. Cracking stuff.

Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn (Cert. 18) Ryan Gosling is “the Driver” - he drives; working days as a stunt performer and moonlighting as a getaway wheel-man; our protagonist works alone, anonymous, adhering to his own self-imposed philosophical code. After a hold-up goes spectacularly wrong, the Driver has a bounty put on his head by L.A. mobsters, and when the threat extends to his romantic interest, the Driver’s world begins to split at the seams. At its heart, Drive is a B-Movie; exploitative in its explosions of gore and its high speed pursuits reminiscent of the great 70s car-chase flicks. It manages, however, to be something of a great deal more substance, thanks in no small part to the film’s broad array of influences. Director Nicolas Refn evokes any number of film makers, from early Scorsese through to Sofia Coppola via a heavy dose of Kenneth Anger - Gosling’s Driver is the amoral, potentially psychotic, nameless hero of Leone legend. Drive manages to pay homage without resorting to pastiche, a trap Tarantino has fallen into in recent years. Whilst the film is being marketed as Gosling’s moment at the top it really belongs to Winding and his L.A.; a seedy landscape existing somewhere between Scarface and the Grand Theft Auto games. It’s got a killer soundtrack too.

BEATS GET YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR THREE LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS SECTION FOR ALL THOSE BASS HEAVY RAVERS OUT THERE.

Nicola Roberts ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ UK Release Date: 26 September 2011 ~

To give the pop princess-come-“fashion icon” (cough) some credit, first solo effort ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’, on the whole, stands out from the densely packed crowd of exgirlband solo attempts the music industry is so casually littered with nowadays. It’s more daring in its choice of instrumentation and could even be identified in a musical line-up, unlike the rest of Roberts’ contemporaries’ works. ‘Yo-yo’ is the first track of any appeal – its chorus is catchy, although Roberts’ awful voice detracts from forming any kind of positive attachment with the melody when it’s stuck in your head afterwards. The real surprise is stand-out track ‘I’ which is actually reminiscent of Pink Floyd (no misprint). Its opening catchy riff instantly grabs you and actually continues to impress. Thumping and infectious ‘Say It Out Loud’ is another high point of the album, and it’s difficult to understand why this was not chosen as the lead single of the album over the horrendous ‘Beat Of My Drum’. The album as a whole takes some getting used to and certainly contains some dodgy moments (not to mention a stupid title), but you can see what they’re trying to do with it and there is a fair amount of material with decent musical credibility. Not a bad effort.

Kasabian ‘Velociraptor!’ UK Release Date: 19 September 2011 ~

Kasabian have certainly been busy over the last few years, and much of their music is easily accessible just by turning on the television, or turning up to a festival of anthem-screeching, chanting youth. So it will certainly be interesting to see if 2011 effort ‘Velociraptor!’ will have the same permanently-inking effects on our day to day aural landscapes and subconscious. Second track ‘Days Are Forgotten’ hints heavily that this may well be the case. Its Tarzan-like hook is easily ingrained within the mind and is sure to be a favourite among large, sweaty crowds come Summer 2012. The rest of the album continues on a fairly predictable trajectory although for fans of Kasabian, it should tick all the boxes. ‘Acid Turkish Bath (Shelter From The Storm)’ is a highlight, with its wailing vocals, epic orchestral injections and overlapping of vocal melodies, built up to create quite an interesting six minute musical tapestry which like much of the album, you’ll probably find yourself singing along to at some point in the coming months.

Marcus Foster ‘Nameless Path’ UK Release Date: 26 September 2011 ~

Marcus Foster breaks onto the UK music scene with the incredibly soulful and talent-drenched ‘Nameless Path’. His voice is one of sheer emotional coherency - reminiscent of Damien Rice - and the album lends itself to a full listen, perhaps with a reflective frame of mind and the time spent to really listen and absorb the music. It’s hard to pinpoint the best point of this album as each track stands on its own, not only as a component of a wellthemed album but also in its own right. There’s just the right amount of variety in it without losing the feel of continuity that an album of this kind needs to really have an impact on whoever is listening. Across the album can be heard the influences of blues, gospel, jazz, folk, flavours of country and old-fashioned piano balladry and the resulting product utilises the very best aspects of each genre, pulling them together to create a satisfying, wellrounded collection of musically, lyrically and emotionally brilliant songs. Foster is definitely one to watch.
