Based on the alleged real-life experiences of George and Kathy Lutz and their three children, the film portrays the paranoia and fear induced by a series of paranormal events, which forced the terrified family to flee after only 28 days in their new home.

The Exorcist (1973)

Named the scariest movie ever made in numerous polls, this tale of demonic possession is not for the faint hearted. Approaching puberty, 12 year old Regan MacNeil begins to experience more than a dose of angst riddled hormones. Seemingly overnight, the cutesy pre-teen morphs into a levitating, projectile vomiting, blaspheming demon. Convincing effects and a stellar performance by a young Linda Blair make this film an unmissable classic.

Poltergeist (1982)

Apparitions leaping from TV sets and through walls transfix young Carol Anne who lives with her family in California. Initially harmless and playful, the uninvited entities soon turn sinister, repeatedly attempting to snatch the girl. What ensues is a family’s battle to banish the ‘Beast’ that is desperate to take their daughter to the afterlife. Even scarier, are the numerous stories of untimely deaths connected to many involved with the film, namely child star Heather O’Rourke who died at just 12 years old.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Loosely based on real-life Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who as well as torturing and skinning his own victims, exhumed corpses from the local graveyard until he was caught in 1957, is Tobe Hoppers’ ‘Leatherface’. Donning a mask of skin created from his previous victims and assisted by his terrifyingly deranged family, the maniacal, chainsaw-wielding killer sets upon a group of unsuspecting friends with horrifying consequences.

Halloween (1978)

Setting the standard for a new genre of ‘teen’ horror films is John Carpenter’s Halloween and the subsequent franchise created after the film’s huge box office success.

Sex and the Steel City Freshers Kate Hobson Ah – Freshers Week. The youths are released from the constraints of Mum and Dad for seven days of unashamed debauchery resulting in future-forming friendships. A world away from the limited, outgrown environment of home, University presents a unique and spectacular sea of talent. Why people even bother to stay in a relationship when they come here is thus beyond me. Who wants to have that niggling reminder at the back of their brain that they shouldn’t really be flirting with the pleasantly attractive boy from Flat F213? Who wants an annoyingly pathetic boyfriend on the phone at 2am moaning that they haven’t called him? Who wants to have to travel home every weekend to satisfy the insecurities of their other half? The answer is, of course, no one in their right mind. It never fails – you stumble into your new kitchen, struggling with an overflowing box of pots and pans, clatter over to the cupboard, brush the sweaty locks of hair out of your eyes and - come face to face with a shatteringly appealing new flatmate. Or, at least, someone vaguely attractive who immediately eradicates any lingering devotion to anyone left back home. And thus begins the inescapable dilemma of ‘should I, shouldn’t I?’ Drunken fumbles are all well and good when you’ll never see the person in question again but when you’ll be sharing a fridge with them for the rest of the year it’s a different story. If from fear of unavoidable awkwardness further down the tenancy agreement-long line you choose to resist the urge to burst in the bathroom to ‘accidentally’ catch said hottie in the nude, then wave goodbye to sloppy pyjama days and makeup-free slumps and hello to hours spent in the kitchen waiting to ‘bump’ into your prey. On the other hand, who said showers were made for one…?

Straight Off The Catwalk Sophie Bromley Piazza A new semester. Lazy summer days and hazy summer nights are coming to an end - it’s back to the many hills and, more than likely, the many centimeters of rain of Sheffield. For most, this autumn just brings another term, but for some it will mean the first semester of many more to come. And such a transition can do wonders for your wardrobe. It is the perfect time to reinvent your style. Mixing with unfamiliar faces in new surroundings can be liberating, giving you the confidence to wear something you might feel out of place wearing in your local corner shop. And this autumn’s trends allow you to push those usual limits to the moon and back. Wide leg trousers are sticking around from summer and carrying the 70’s trend to a more sophisticated place with a city slick, professional vibe, and you’ll find fur from faux fox to plum plumes draped around shoulders, hanging from handbags and trimming cuffs, collars and hoods. However, the Autumn 2011 look that can make the biggest impact is python print, which has stolen the grip that leopard spots have had over the highstreet for the past few seasons. The subtle tones and chic pattern give a punk edge that has high fashion elegance. Update an outfit with a sprinkling of snake print accessories or go all out with drainpipe python print jeans. A leopard never changes its spots? Well, now just might be the time to do so.

This month our party addict tells us of his sunshine tales. 2011 on the White Isle seemed to have been even more anticipated than any of the recent years amongst regular Ibiza enthusiasts, workers and even the experienced, party hard locals. This all this boils down to one thing....the Playa d’en Bossa born hotel called Ushuaia, a hotel-come-day-party-venue. Being anticipated as one of the biggest additions to Ibiza in the last decade, it had one huge question looming above it: will it become the rebirth of daytime pool parties on the island? On arrival, the sleek minimal exterior with pastel colour light boxes illuminating the surrounding area was an attraction of its own. The opening had come and gone tickets for that were like gold-dust so I unfortunately missed the Cadenza boys such as Reboot and Robert Dietz that day. Any lucky sod that managed to get access to the official opening became the most annoying person on the island; it was like they were rubbing in that they’d got the present you had always wanted. My big cherry popping moment came. Through working here I had managed to get on the workers’ guestlist for the party but tickets were just 30 Euros anyway and, believe me, that’s a bargain in Ibiza. I was destined to see the Swedes on their regular Wednesday residency. The moment came - moving in through the colossal doors, my goosebumps took a recharge - I needed to scream, feeling like a young girl catching glimpses of her biggest music idol. At one end was a massive stage fit for a festival, where Max Vangeli was already smashing out the tracks to an already hyped audience. Then there was the enormous pool, dancers being carried on oiled-up men’s shoulders to their podiums, light shows, water fountains... With a full capacity of 5000 it’s easy to imagine the sheer stature and size of the arena. The audience seemed to get bigger and bigger as I meandered my way through the early-bird party goers. I eventually found a spot near the VIP beds at the back where I stood with pals for 15 minutes or so just simply picking my jaw up from the tiled floor. Planes were within touching distance as they landed into Ibiza Aeroportia. The Swedes burst out with the recognisable voice of Steve Angello screaming, “WE’RE SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA, ARE YOU READY?” From that moment on I knew this one was gonna be big, and I wasn’t wrong. Come night, Ushuaia was in its full glory. It was simply unbelievable. I was left answering that one question; did it become the rebirth of daytime pool parties? Too f**king right it did! Ushuaia became a weekly visit in my diary. The Smallprint: Opening times 5pm-12am. Tickets varied from 30 Euros up to 50 Euros as the season goes on. Taxis from San Antonio cost around 25 Euros but a free bus usually comes with the ticket price. Do you love a good bit of Indie? Yes I do, I love a good bit of everything to be honest, something that gets a reaction and also surprises people. What’s your biggest crowd pleasing track? That is the million dollar question. I never really plan much as I like to see what the crowd look like and feel like. Which track is most played on your iPod this month? The new Horrors’ album, ‘Skying’. Which upcoming music stars should our readers be looking out for? A new band called PET and Discopolis, and a track by Raized by Wolves called ‘The Call’. And I’m really excited about the new Coldplay album. You also DJ on Radio One – do you prefer radio or being in the midst of it as a club DJ? I’m not really a superstar DJ and I do get very nervous when I’m on a stage playing, much prefer being in my wee booth lost in the music

You review the latest film and DVD releases on your radio show – what’s the best film you’ve seen recently? The new Ryan Gosling film called ‘Drive’. As a Radio One presenter you get to interview movie superstars – ever been star-struck? And with whom? At least once a week I get star-struck, I think when I don’t it’s time to think about changing jobs. Complacency is a very sad thing. What’s been your most memorable interview? Leonardo Di Caprio - every time I have done him he is just refreshing and it’s heartening that someone of his superstar status can be so approachable and lovely and down to earth. Are there any celebs you’d love to interview? YES, how long do you have? Madonna has a new film coming out and I’m really hoping I get to chat to her about it. How did you get into DJing? Love of music really. For all of those aspiring DJs out there, what advice would you give them? If you know it’s what you want to do, don’t take no for an answer and don’t try and be something you are not; people see through that very quickly.

Search : ‘Neighbourhood Club Sheffield’ on Facebook @NeighClub on Twitter

So you’re coming to Sheffield to guest appear at the Neighbourhood launch night - have you DJ’d in Sheffield before? Are the people of Sheffield a good crowd? Yes I have, quite a few times. Really great crowd and always big fans of music. Love playing there.

Where did you wake up this morning? Very early in my bed as we have no curtains at the moment. Who did you last receive a text from? My friend Gemma saying she didn’t want to come and watch The Smurfs with me. Any secret celebrity crushes? Well then they wouldn’t be secret anymore would they?! Describe yourself in three words? Honest, Interested and Loyal. Any hidden talents? I can get a duvet cover on in less than 30 seconds.

DIRTY LAUNDRY

It’s that exciting time of year again for all you new and existing students - the start of term! Whether you’re a newbie or an established student it’s not your classes or scary lecturers that concern you… the biggest issue is what to wear! You want to make an impact on your first day with an outfit that will not only leave a great first impression but will give you a fashionista rep to boot. There are plenty of fantastic options on the high street that will set you apart from the rest without breaking your bank balance; think trendy but comfortable, add a few fabulous accessories and you’re good to go.

For a look that is practical yet stylish, team a pair of tailored shorts or chinos with a patterned blouse, or striped tee. You can’t go wrong with an oversized chunky knit on top to keep you toasty. Not a trouser fan? Try a sweet dress with a skinny belt and ankle socks.

Easily worn with tailored trousers, leggings or jeans, blazers can add sophistication to any outfit. Buy in a basic colour such as black or brown - they go with anything and can be mixed and matched with different pieces throughout the week. This TOPSHOP Olive Blazer - £60 would be a great addition to anybody’s wardrobe! Make sure you’re prepared with some comfy flats; you’ll need them for all that running in between classes. Until you’re used to your new timetable I’d say keep the heels for the freshers parties!

Super Street PS3, Xbox 360,Fighter PC IV: Arcade Edition

The first update to Street Fighter IV was released a good while ago now, but this latest release might suggest to some that Capcom have reverted to their old ways of creating revision after revision of their Street Fighter games. Here we have the gobful that is Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. Four new characters sounds great but it’s less than half of what you’d expect - two more uninspired Ryu-clones: Evil Ryu and Oni (a sort of Super Akuma) and the admittedly brilliant Yun and Yang from SFIII. With no new stages to fight in; the only other difference between this and Vanilla Super are a few minor tweaks to each character’s balance - changes so slight you’ll never notice and probably wouldn’t even believe the changes exist. Of course, there’s no denying it’s the version to own. If you don’t own Super SFIV yet, you should certainly take the opportunity to buy this fantastically enjoyable slice of fighting action for a knockdown price.

F.E.A.R. 3 PS3, Xbox 360, PC F.E.A.R has been through three versions and a couple of mission packs yet the developers still somehow fail to realise that perhaps the least scary things on the face of the planet are six-year old girls. But even if the game was scary, the combination just doesn’t work and simply comes across as quite ludicrous. Venture through four rooms of frenetic gunfights with enemy soldiers, then pass two further rooms devoid of action but instead populated with prescripted shocks, typically with all the success of a particularly limp ghost train - then repeat. The shooting action itself is particularly inoffensive. Even after a less than laudable and flagrant pandering to Call of Duty’s ever-growing fan-base in this latest version, there are some better-than-average gunfire sound effects and enemy reactions, teamed with brutally gory, blood-spraying kills, with bullets tearing apart enemies in blood-thirsty fashion. Despite the explosive and reasonably successful gunplay, I just can’t see past the hare-brained, pointless interruptions to truly enjoy it.

FLICKS TAKE AN INSIGHT INTO THE THOUGHTS OF THE STUDENT MAGAZINE CRITICS AS THEY PICK AND PROD TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LATEST RELEASES.

Cowboys and Aliens Director John Favreau (Cert. 12A) It’s 1873, shortly after the arrival of mysterious stranger Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig). The small Arizona mining town of Absolution comes under fire from a fleet of UFOs. After turning the town to rubble, the invaders kidnap several locals, and it’s up to Lonergan and the iron-fisted Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford, perhaps absolving for his last alien encounter) to hunt down their extraterrestrial foe and rescue the townsfolk. The Western and Sci-fi genres have long suffered a tumultuous relationship. One only has to refer to such duds as Wild Wild West or more recently Jonah Hex to see that their unity rarely ends well - unfortunately the trend continues. Favreau has proven his blockbuster chops with the Iron Man franchise but here he seems lost; stumbling between comedy and gritty action and never quite working out the balance. The eponymous cowboys are an amalgamation of every Western cliché ever put on screen and the post-Abrams aliens are a soulless threat, serving as little more than piñatas for violence which often borders on gratuitous. The film is of course not entirely without merit; Craig smoulders in a cowboy outfit, if only he’d keep his mouth shut.

The Guard Director John Michael McDonagh (Cert. 15) Following Intermission, Perrier’s Bounty and the very successful In Bruges, The Guard is the latest quirky, darkly-comic crime movie to make the trip across the Irish Sea. Galway Police officer, Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson), is unorthodox to say the least; recreational drug user, casual racist, Daniel O’Donnell fan, Olympic swimmer. He is also very good at his job, and when F.B.I agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) comes to town to investigate drug trafficking, the pair must team up to uncover the truth. Looking at a screen shot of The Guard, one could be forgiven for thinking it to be little more than ITV evening-drama fodder. Fortunately this is not the case and it’s all thanks to a sterling performance from Gleeson, who carries the weight of the film on his broad shoulders. The Guard shares recurring themes and motifs with its predecessors; philosophical thugs, children as catalysts, amoral heroes and like In Bruges before it, makes wonderful use of the natural humour and poetry of the Irish tongue. The film delights in subverting the genre (locals are disappointed Agent Everett isn’t from behavioural sciences) and dishes out belly laughs and real heart in equal measure. A gem of a movie.

The Inbetweeners Movie Director Ben Palmer (Cert. 15) School’s out for the pupils of Rudge Park Comprehensive and to celebrate, Will, Simon, Jay and Neil are off to Malia for two weeks of “sun, sea, booze, minge, fanny and sex”. It’s not long of course before things start to go a bit pear-shaped for the boys, there are dead dogs, ants nests, suicide shots, lots of vomit and maybe even a shot at holiday romance. The Inbetweeners Movie is just that, a movie proper, not just an episode stretched out to an hour and a half. At least that’s what the film makers would have us believe; the film is peppered with cinematic grace notes, stedicam, slo-mo, montage - desperate to justify its position on the big screen. The transition is not wholly successful; the plot unravels episodically and there is a clear sag around the half-hour mark from which it takes some time for the film to find its footing again. Where the film really succeeds however, is in giving genuine heart and warmth to the characters, and whilst familiarity with the TV series is mandatory, the film explores new emotional depths which were restricted by the half-hour format. Oh, and it’s funny too, really funny.

BEATS THIS IS THE SECTION OF THE MAG THAT GETS YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR THREE LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS

Jay Z and Kanye West ‘Watch the Throne’ UK Release Date: 8th August 2011 ~

This highly anticipated album has been the subject of much hype for months and frankly, disappoints. The music itself seems to be merely a bi-product of the clear aim of this album: to thrust forward both West and Carter’s horrifically overinflated egos. There are various name-checks from the pair’s combined phonebook, notably Beyoncé’s welcome vocals on the majestic ‘Lift Off ’, which is the most outstanding track, alongside ‘Otis’, which heavily samples Otis Redding’s ‘Try a Little Tenderness’. There is a theme of sampling from such well-renowned greats as Redding, including the rehashing of the works of James Brown, Nina Simone and others, and although they work musically, you can’t help but feel the duo are unashamedly and without modesty including themselves in the bracket within which these musical legends are accepted. Though the album breaks down a few boundaries currently prohibiting most pop and rap songs from surpassing the three-minute, synth-led verse/chorus style that has become the standard, it is a bit lengthy for the level of variety really included (i.e. not a lot).

Little Dragon ‘Ritual Union’ UK Release Date: 26th July 2011 ~

Swedish band Little Dragon are back with their latest electro-spacey-pop effort ‘Ritual Union’. The title track has had substantial airplay and does stand out from the track listing as one of the songs most likely to be stuck in your head for the hours following listening. Vocalist and percussionist Nagano and Co. weaves her fairly androgynous vocals into the amateur-timbre synths, drum machines and soundpads that make up the strangely basic landscape of the album. There are a limited number of layers used and although this can sound fairly mechanical, it is strangely comforting that at times, the album simply sounds like soulful injections into the musings of a teenage nerd with access to an old 80s synth and a MIDI cable. The album as a whole makes for fairly good chill-out listening and upbeat features such as ‘Crystalfilm’ keep it dancey enough to not be out of place in the electronic/dance scene in which this band have made their name.

LMFAO ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ UK Release Date: 18th July 2011 ~

It is unlikely that you will have failed to aurally absorb the thumping beats and euphoric synths of American pop/ electro/rap duo LMFAO. This album is a collection of perfect examples of songs that have helped to contribute to the current ‘sound’ that radio stations have made inescapable for the general public. With lyrical themes never straying far from the current trend of drinking, promiscuity, sexual innuendos and shameless self-promotion (“I’m gonna get you wet, I’m gonna make you sweat, a night you won’t forget” – from the scarily addictive ‘Champagne Showers’), it is difficult to imagine this album not being immensely popular with the album-purchasing general public. The now infamous ‘Party Rock Anthem’, whose name comes from the band’s 2009 album ‘Party Rock’ which is also the title of their clothing brand, is in fact likely to be an anthem of our time. Not sure how I feel about this, but it’s difficult to resist at least a bit of a toe-tap and hum-along.

sheffield all stars EP OF THE MONTH ZOMBOY GAME TIME EP

Did you expect your current EP, ‘Game Time’, to do as well as it has done in such a short amount of time? I think the last time I checked it was No. 2 on Beat Port’s Top 5 – that’s a huge accomplishment in itself! ZOMBOY: Yeah, I did not see that coming at all! I didn’t expect to chart at all let alone reach Number 2! Each track on the EP is charting in the Top 20 at the moment. It was awfully close to reaching Number 1 but with Skrillex’s remix of Nero’s “Promises” being released there was no way I could have competed with that! Next time, eh.

STEEL SEASON Connor McGovern: Vocals Tom Brabbs: Guitar Tim Angus: Guitar Jimmy Orr: Bass Joseph Broadbent: Drums How Would You Describe Your Style of Music? (Tom) We’ve got a mix of musical preferences including metal, hard rock, to softer poppy music... (Connor) There’s something everyone can like, we have influences ranging from Metallica and Pantera to Lady GaGa and Katy Perry. Tell us something exciting about yourselves... (Connor) We play in a badass band! (Tom) I once went to a party and woke up with dyed red hair. This was during the filming of a music video so my hair colour changes from brown to ginger to red throughout the video. (Connor) He also went to a party dressed as a pregnant washerwoman. (Jimmy) We spent five hours trying to get a good snare sound on our album rather than recording an extra song. (Connor) Just before answering these questions I pulled the door handle off Jimmy’s house. What inspired you to start Steel Season? (Jimmy) The first thing I wanted to do when I got to uni in Sheffield was to start a band and I found Tom. Not too long after Tim and Joe joined and then we went almost a year looking for a permanent vocalist before we found Connor. (Connor) It sounds cheesy but we just love music, we make music and perform because we love it. We just love what we do and it’s made a strong bond between us all. (Tom) We were students with no money, then we formed a band, now we’re a band with no money.

Where and when was your first gig? (Connor) September 5th 2011 at West Street Live, Sheffield. Where is your dream location to perform? (Tom) Download Festival at Donington. It’s one of the biggest rock festivals out there, so you are always going to dream of stepping up on that stage. 5. As Sheffield born stars, what’s next on your agenda? (Connor) World Domination! (Tom) Finishing off our first album this year and touring then hopefully some festivals next year. (Connor) Just to keep going from strength to strength hopefully. We’re filming music videos for two songs in October which should be fun.
