As you read this, you’re probably thinking that this is just an ordinary student magazine. Packed full of fascinating snippets of editorial, reviews, gossip and competitions, of course, but there’s not anything too mind-blowing about that. Look a bit closer, however, and you’ll discover that this particular issue holds something just a little bit more unique within its pages. With this first issue of the new academic year, The Student Magazine launches Fully Augmented Reality, a way of adding virtual little extra treats to the paper pages themselves. As one of the first magazine companies within the Yorkshire area to bring this to the student population, we’re excited to be on the frontline of new media – and you lucky readers are some of the first in the UK to be treated to this! ‘But what exactly is this reality stuff?’, I hear you ask. What A Gwan?
UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Volunteering and Part-Time Jobs Fair
On 3rd October is an event for those new to the University and also those who have a bit of spare time on their hands this year, or are in need of a bit of extra cash. From 3pm in the Octagon you can speak to many different people from a wide range of local businesses, charities and employers, and hopefully manage to get yourself a part-time job to support your studies, or even help give back to your local community. There are volunteering opportunities in many sectors from teaching to sport and youth work to helping the elderly. Part-time jobs can be hard to come by these days but the University itself has lots of great jobs on offer which will also be explained at the fair. Register online on the Student Union website beforehand if you want to beat those queues!
The Tuesday Club: Annie Mac, Breakage + more Due to the Union having some work done this year, The Tuesday Club has relocated to The Leadmill and what better place could there be? The line-up is remaining as strong as ever and kicking off on October 2nd is Annie Mac and Breakage, as well as other acts to be announced soon. When Annie Mac comes to Sheffield it always sells out so avoid disappointment by getting your tickets now at the early bird price of £11. Let’s hope that the new venue doesn’t change anything and that The Tuesday Club will continue to be one of Sheffield’s best and most popular club nights.
Sheffield Brewery Tour The University of Sheffield Union have put on an impressive amount of different ‘Give it a Go’ programmes to give students the chance to try or experience something new over their time, and that’s not stopping this year. This is an event that should be particularly appealing to new Freshers so they can check out some of Sheffield’s many great pubs. Simply meet outside the Union at 6.30pm on October 4th and wait for the tour to commence. It’s a great way to meet some new people with shared interests and of course, once the tour finishes it doesn’t necessarily mean the night has to be over.
Sheffield Ghost Walk This is another great event for Freshers who want to explore their new home, meet some different people and experience something a little bit out of the ordinary. A ticket for the Sheffield Ghost Walk costs only £4 for students, and each tour and each story that’s told is different every time. The tours last around two hours and you just have to meet outside the Town Hall at 7.30pm on the 29th. Monday ghost tours are based around classic ghost stories that have stayed strong over the years but there are also other tours during the week: Wednesdays which tell more gruesome stories and Thursdays which tell the stories of the Campo Lane area of Sheffield.

HALLAM UNIVERSITY Pamper Party New Sheffield Hallam University Freshers are fortunate enough to have two intro weeks this year, with the second being a more chilled out and informal affair, with lots of essential advice and treats for new starters. On October 4th from 12pm there is going to be a free pamper party at The Hubs and everyone is welcome to attend. You can experience many relaxing beauty treatments (as we all know that starting University can be a stressful experience for anyone), and there will also be tasty snacks and wonderful cocktails, and everything has great student discounts.
Ice Skating Event This is a great opportunity for new students to meet new friends, as well as for anyone who wants to try and learn a new skill. Current students have created an event on the 11th to Ice Sheffield so that everyone can experience an evening of ice skating. It is very cheap for students on Thursdays at only £1.10 for the evening and an additional £1.70 for those who need to hire skates. Even with the tram fare to and from Ice Sheffield this still works out very reasonably and won’t stretch any student budget too far.
Hallam Nation Don’t miss the biggest night of the week for students at Sheffield Hallam. The club night at Embrace is the official club night for all Hallam students and this one on October 3rd is guaranteed to be a brilliant night. Drinks and entry price are very reasonable and expect to hear the all the best student anthems from all genres of music. This will be a great way to celebrate your first few weeks at University and start off what should be a fantastic year ahead.

Blackpool Illuminations You might feel strange taking a trip away from Sheffield when you’ve only just got here but this is a great event that really shouldn’t be missed. Tickets to go and see the outstanding light display in Blackpool are only £12 with an NUS card and £15 without, which includes your travel costs to and from the event. To take part just meet outside The Hubs at 12pm on October 6th and be prepared to see something truly mind blowing.

I’m on Capital across Yorkshire every afternoon between 4-7pm!” The Script are back! Danny and Mark dropped by Capital for a cup of tea and a chat…
You have album number 3 out! It’s actually called ‘#3’ - is that right? Danny - Yeah that’s right, keeping up with the kids with the hash tags.
Yeah, so you were friends first? Mark - Yeah, the script formed in 2005, but we’ve known each other for about 15 years.
What sound are you going for on the new album? Danny - It’s different to our previous two, it’s a lot more positive. The last two were all about being broken hearted, but this one is for all the fans that want to have a dance to our music. I would describe it as ‘Pub Songs’. You know, that great vibe you have in the pub on a Saturday night!
Danny - We met when I went round to Mark’s to buy some studio equipment from him. He was a bit of a hustler really, as I paid him for the equipment, we became mates and then a month later it was all back down at his house as we were bandmates!
So Danny - you were on The Voice last year, it’s coming back for a second series; will you be returning? Danny - I loved doing The Voice and I would definitely go back if they asked me. I especially loved the spinning chairs! (Laughs) (Laughs) Like a mini waltzer! So, you two have been rumoured to have quite a bromance going on? Danny - Yeah I know, we came high up in a list of bromances along with Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Mark - We were like, hey - we’ve been friends longer than those boys.
So your single, Hall of Fame, features Will.I.am - did that come from a conversation at The Voice? Danny - Yes! Basically it was the last couple of shows, we had a lot of stuff ready for the new album and we played it to him, he loved it and actually wanted it for his album. Mark - We told him he’d have to prise it from our cold, dead hands. Danny - Yeah, and then Mark suggested that we do it together, a true duet. So it was a total collaboration then? Mark - Yeah - line by line - duet style. Danny - We got sick of hearing, ‘featuring’, when the rapper comes in and they haven’t even met or even been in the same country! We wanted to do something different and it really worked.

FESTIVAL frolicking at leeds fest 2012 You’re totally buzzing. You’ve been waiting for this all year and you’re finally there. Your mates have brought the crates of beer. You have a tent ready to kip in between sets and you’ve brought glow sticks to flash around all weekend. For students, it’s literally the event of the year and you’re going to enjoy it, even if it damn near kills you. That’s right; we’re talking about Leeds Fest 2012. One of the biggest Festival is more than just a festival, it’s an experience on a truly epic scale and this year The Student Magazine sent our little gremlin down to check out all the action. When you get there, it hits you like a freight train, the crowd electric, the booze flowing and the music so loud the bass shakes the ground. Leeds Fest 2012 had plenty of action. Let’s start with Florence and The Machine - we all love a bit of Florence and her Sunday Main Stage set didn’t disappoint. The vocals were smooth, the crowd thumping and even the sunset lit a fire under Miss Welch as she performed classic hits such as ‘Shake It Out’, which started out slow, growing into a huge dance floor filler, ‘Never Let Me Go’, with amazing acoustic quality

and ‘Spectrum’, her latest club banger collaboration with Calvin Harris, that had every last member of that crowd baying for more! If the awesomeness that is Florence wasn’t enough to amaze, Sunday had a headlining set from indie music legends, Kasabian, who performed such classic tunes as ‘Empire’ and show closer ‘Fire’, amidst a fantastic laser light show that left every last member of the audience enthralled. Saturday saw a headline set from alt
gods, The Cure, on the Main Stage; maybe a bit before our time for most of us, nevertheless we all knew the classics and The Cure didn’t fail to deliver with a 33 song set that left the crowd reeling. Other acts throughout the weekend included a thumping set from American dance-electro band Passion Pit, a truly bizarre set from Crystal Castle, whose lead singer Alice Glass is more eccentric than the Mad Hatter, and Miike Snow, who wowed the crowd throughout the entire set. ever, came from Radio One promoted DJ Jaguar Skills. The man who refused to show his face, rather speaking from behind a screen that projected truly mental images, the set consisted of wicked dance, electro, R&B and pop tunes all mashed and spliced together, distorted and mixed along with spoken words as tracks collided into one another. The set was like tripping on music! Seriously, the man has skills (Jaguar…) and you’ve got to check out one of his sets if you can. However, there’s more than just banging beats to the Leeds Fest experience. You wanted to throw up on the tilt-awhirl? Leeds Fest 2012 had a classic fair ground. You wanted to get a great meal at decent prices? Leeds Fest 2012 had gastrically great food stalls, which filled your belly with hearty grub. You wanted to buy something to take back to your mates? Leeds Fest 2012 had all manner of wacky stalls. One of the most memorable things, however, had to be the Oxygen Bar; a place to inhale flavoured oxygen (orange, apple, cherry), clearing your head and even helping to prevent hangovers! So there you have it; Leeds Fest 2012 was a bloody smash! Missed out? Head on down next year, it only keeps getting better.

Reviewed Forget bland, soulless restaurants, menus filled with predictable dishes and dull flavours with no chance of getting your taste buds tingling. Tassili has arrived in Sheffield, and with it comes a taste of the exotic. Situated within the dining haven of London Road, just a peek through the window gives a burst of intriguing colour, tempting passer-bys to explore further . Offering a unique taste of Algerian cuisine, Tassili is a something very different in Sheffield. The North African atmosphere hits from the moment you walk through the door, the traditional Saharan décor transforming the space into an Algerian dream; deeply coloured tent-like drapes on the ceiling, woven rugs covering the walls, colourful lanterns adding a lush glow. A sweet scent carries your senses to a land far, far away, and the traditional music in the background adds a tantalising authenticity to the atmosphere. We settled down to our table, relaxing against the cushions on the bench, a glimmering candle casting a twinkle to the dim light around us. The anticipation of something special was in the air. Greeted by manager Adel and a smiling waiter, awaiting us on our table lay freshly baked, Algerian seeded bread, accompanied by oil, butter and olives – always a nice touch to beat the increasing hunger! We were also presented with two falafel on a bed of humus, hot and delicately flavoured with a hint of refreshing spice. For the starters we chose two dishes off the Specials list – Stuffed Mushrooms and, on Adel’s recommendation, the Sea Bass. The Stuffed Mushrooms were fantastic – easily
my favourite part of the meal – two, large, flat mushrooms filled with chopped pepper, cheese and breadcrumbs, fresh tasting and moreish. The fish was cooked to perfection, boneless and falling into flakes, incredibly moist and laden with a delicious, lemony, salty taste. The mains at Tassili include a range of Tajines, Couscous and Grills (Meshoui); we opted for the Chicken Couscous dish and Chicken Meshoui. The couscous consisted of slow cooked chicken, thinly sliced pieces of courgette, carrots and chickpeas, served on a bed of couscous. The moist meat was tickled with a sweet flavour, picked up more strongly by the vegetables, and the couscous added a wholesome base to the dish, moistened by the accompanying tomatoey sauce. Arriving on a large plate, the Chicken Meshoui was made up of chargrilled chicken and pepper pieces on skewers, served on mash potato. Tenderly cooked, the chicken tasted perfect with the chargrilled peppers, and, although it may sound simple, the mash was creamy, smooth, moist and very moreish. Our potato side dish was similar to a potato au gratin – slices of potato baked within a creamy sauce, a potato dish I wouldn’t have expected to find but which gave a tasty addition to the meal. All served beautifully and within traditionally decorated Algerian crockery, our meal at Tassili was one to remember – stepping off London Road into the mystical realms of Algeria is a secret escape, and one I’d recommend you enjoy.

DJ W!LD Genre: HOUSE & TECHNO
Guillaume Duchastel de Montrouge is something of an enigma; as DJ W!LD, Guillaume has spent the best part of the last decade forging one of the most enviable CVs on the House circuit. Inspired by the Detroit techno and house that was infiltrating his native Dijon in the mid1990s, W!LD first got behind the decks in Paris 1996. Before long his trademark, deep, dark house sets were taking him across the globe, marking him out as one of the must-see acts emerging from France’s now legendary dance scene. It’s been hard work for W!LD - those in the know have always had him pegged as one of the greats, but it wasn’t until he took up his place as a resident DJ at DC-10’s infamous Circo Loco, that he began to get the recognition he’s long deserved. Next month DJ W!LD will be making his Steel City debut at The Fez Club’s De:Bug Presents, an unforgettable night with one of the best in the business is guaranteed. We took an opportunity to chat with W!LD ahead of his appearance on the Steel streets.

You’ve been gigging a fair bit this year - have you had any specific gigs that have stood out for you personally? This year for sure DC10 with Circoloco, Treehouse Miami Cielo NY, Fabric on Sunday and most of the places I’ve played in London - Panorama Bar for Rekids party, Disco Tales in Vienna, Cocoon Tokyo, Electric Picnic and many more -I can’t say them all! It was definitely a great year!
Where did the name come from? From wild-style old movies about graffiti art and hip hop culture - my other passion.
What’s your autumn / winter tune? (I’m into really dirty deep house such as Butane or SHDWPLAY.) Have you got a favourite artist in your field? One I’m never disappointed by is Chris Carrier, for sure! Always something I like that I’m going to play and be doing so for a long time.

About your label, ‘W’ - how is that progressing; have you got any exciting new projects in the pipeline? Well, yeah, right now there’s my new EP, ‘We Almost Lost Detroit’, then shaping another of my EPs, then planning a new album with some exciting remixes. How does it feel going from being an underground DJ to becoming an international hit? Really good, can’t complain even if I’ve got the feeling sometimes to do more politics than music, the most important thing is to not forget where I come from! And keep going the way I want and do the music I want and play the music I want. The rest is just detail. Is there any advice you could give to an up and coming DJ to gain bigger recognition for their skills? First, for sure, to keep working and working on DJ skills, production skills, sign music on good labels and keep doing so until the public really support you! For me, that’s the only real way! You can always suck up to the promoter or agent, it could work too, but for how many years? The key to success is longevity.
What’s next for you? It’s difficult to say, as I have eight EPs already signed, plus two new albums ready already, so I always like my last one better, then I start something new!

Circo Loco is the craziest place I’ve ever walked in to, what is your craziest experience in there? There are so many but the strongest one was last year when I was playing. I turned to take a new vinyl and when I turned back the crowd on the dancefloor seemed to have left because they were all sitting on the dancefloor, and when the break came back (it was a special W!ld one) the crowd jumped so high and with so much emotion I can’t forget those special moments. You’re coming to Sheffield soon to the Fez Club (I’ve already bought my ticket - cannot wait!). How does the British crowd compare to that in France? I have to do nothing! And it’s a good thing! I prefer the way better party and play in England! People like to party, and have a big culture of music. You’ve been described so many times as ‘an exciting

Horny Housemates By Kate Hobson Published September 2012 Having been living with your family for probably the whole of your life so far, the move to university presents you with a whole new world – living with housemates. But when you’re (luckily, you initially think) confronted with a hottie moving in to the room next door, it poses a tricky conundrum. Getting it on with a flatmate has its advantages and disadvantages. Having a live-in lover means, of course, that sex is always on tap but what if you fall out? Unlike other one-night/ week/ month stands, you can’t just go home and forget about them – they’re there, in your house, in your face, for the rest of the academic year. You might think you’re madly in love with them but when the honeymoon ends who’s going to be left with an awkward silence as you bump into each other outside the bathroom? Or even worse, stumbling across his new girlfriend brewing the morning cups of tea? If your hooking-up turns into something more serious and you embark on a full-blown relationship (as you might find yourself doing as - well, you can’t get away from them) then this becomes something even harder to get out of - imagine being faced with his heartbroken face every time you open the front door. Trying to avoid someone you live with is not the easiest thing to do. In a normal relationship, moving in together would be pretty far down the line but when dating a housemate, decorum flies out of the window and you find yourself immediately in a serious relationship, discussing who’s turn it is to buy washing up liquid and what you’re having for tea. Although some future wife-of-the-years might find this to be the perfect situation, it strikes me as being a nightmare. Gone is the spontaneity of staying over, gone is the option to roll in following a girls’ night at any hour and gone is the anticipation leading up to a date. My advice? Make it clear it’s just the one night of passion to get it out of your system (unless you’re someone who over-thinks everything, making it much more awkward than it needs to be), or just don’t bother.
The Rudest Toy of the Bunch By Yasmine Geghorn Published September 2012 Laughing out loud in cinemas is quickly becoming extinct. The amount of doom and gloom in The Dark Knight Rises left me missing a good old chuckle. And Seeking a Friend for the End of the World reminded me that Keira Knightley isn’t, and never will be, funny. The summer needed something different, and I needed a remedy against the British weather and British actresses. The solution came in the form of Seth MacFarlane and his first feature length film, Ted. A whole cinema in stitches over a stuffed teddy bear couldn’t be wrong. The plot is simple enough; eight-year-old John has always longed for a best friend. One Christmas, he gets a stuffed bear and wishes the toy was alive. The wish comes true and Ted and John become best friends. But, unlike many childhood toy stories, it doesn’t end there. Everyone grows up, and Ted and John are no exception if the pot smoking, womanising and dead end jobs have anything to say for it. From telling a slightly overweight and unattractive teenage boy to, “Back off, Susan Boyle”, to blaming Hasbro for not giving him a penis, Ted and his offensive one-liners make the film. Some critics have deemed Ted vulgar, childish and downright crazy in parts, but they seemed to have missed out on the key question you should ask about any comedy film: Did it make you laugh? The answer is yes. It’s not for everyone, but if you’ve already bought into the off-track world that MacFarlane’s conjured before, you’ll enjoy seeing that world in real life and made surprisingly soft and cuddly.

Back To Reality By Laura Keen Published September 2012 After an eventful summer spent in Ibiza and to-ing and fro-ing between Newcastle and Sheffield, I’m finally starting to settle again and get back into the swing of the Sheffield lifestyle. The nightlife has quietened down significantly since all the students have headed home for the summer, but in the name of Birthday spirit, we came out of hiding and braved a Saturday night in town. As expected, the sunshine died a death which ruined any plans we had for a boozy BBQ and ‘go whereever we end up’ night. Threads at DQ is always a safe option on a Saturday; with a huge variety of RnB, hip hop and house music it’s a popular go to and is pretty much guaranteed to be busy. So with that decided, we began with a minor pre-sesh and merrily headed into town for about 11pm. We headed straight for The Common Room - not our usual hangout but with its reasonably priced cocktails and shots it’s ideal for a Saturday night. It’s also a stone’s throw from all Sheffield’s main nightlife and the relaxed vibe means it’s not brimming with the usual ‘Townie’ type. After several tequila slammers and mojitos, we stumbled the short walk across Dev Green down to DQ. As expected, the queue was busy and there were plenty of people slurring away in the smoking area. Once inside we were greeted with a decent mix of classic RnB and new house tracks ... we headed straight to the bar. Drinks are quite expensive at Threads so make sure you’re at least half cut before heading there! Overall though, £4 entry isn’t bad considering they have all the local up and coming DJs playing decent tracks. After mincing about for a good three hours, watching the birthday girl deck it several times, the lights were up and reality hit home - we were certainly worse for wear. Everyone was herded out onto the street and it was survival of the fittest to get a taxi home. After paying the taxi fare with an iPhone and falling asleep in the hallway with a soggy dog blanket, on reflection, it wasn’t bad for a Saturday night out in town.
Team GB By Tom Hardy Published September 2012 Before the Olympics started, I was a bit dubious as to whether the event itself would live up to all the hype. It was as if the British public were waiting for a mistake to happen particularly the way in which the media were reporting on every single minor mishap. However, when the events finally began, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the TV. I found myself glued to sports which I would usually turn a blind eye to (some of which I even had to learn the rules for). The Olympics is great for spectators because of the wide variety of sports on offer for everyone to enjoy. I mean, who can forget the women’s beach volleyball…? GB’s performance across the games was simply fantastic. Winning 29 gold medals and finishing third in the medals table was a huge achievement for a country which hasn’t had a lot to shout about in the past few years. Finishing ahead of nations such as Russia, Germany, Japan and Australia was a massive feat, and re-asserted Britain’s status as a major sporting nation. With 65 medals overall, I think everyone can be extremely proud of the talent we have on offer. It shows that putting money into sports such as cycling and rowing pays dividends - perhaps now we should look at doing it with sports we aren’t as successful at. Hopes will be high ahead of the next Olympics in four years time and, dare I say it, we might even do better than we have in London!

What? California Fresh Where? 257 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2GZ What did we eat? Back Bay BBQ Chicken Burrito How much? £4.85 In a burst of colour at the top of Glossop Road lies California Fresh. Having recently opened this summer, the café offers a range of Mexican themed foods to eat in or takeaway. Overflowing with bright colours tropical prints on the walls, decorated with more than a few surfboards, I would be forgiven for anticipating a range of smoothies and fruity flavours awaiting me through the door, (especially as ‘Smoothies’ was also written on the blackboard A-board outside), but disappointingly, inside no trace of this could be seen. Instead, the café presents a range of Mexican treats. I was intruiged. Having tried a burrito before, I was expecting the usual of meat, beans, rice, cheese, guacamole etc, and although ‘The Classic’ is on the menu, the range of options is much more than the basic. Offering a choice of 12 fillings, customers can also create their own from a range of ingredients, in a burrito, rice bowl, salad or nachos. I opted for the Back Bay BBQ burrito, a mix of Stateside homemade BBQ sauce, bacon, cheese, lettuce, rice and chicken. At £4.85, I thought it was a bit on the pricey side, but the amount of filling crammed into the tortilla was worth it. Fresh and moist, the taste was something very different to the normal spicy burrito, with a wonderfully smokey BBQ sauce. With perhaps a little too much rice, the sauce didn’t soak all the way through but the chicken and bacon bits went well with the sauce. Perfectly wrapped in a very fresh, soft tortilla, the burrito impressed and is definitely one for hungry people!
Prithi Raj You can never have too much Indian food. It’s pretty much a staple in the student diet the student experience would be less without it. For a top notch taste of the Indian Cuisine then you just have to take the time to visit Prithi Raj. The Indian restaurant on Ecclesall Road is within a stones throw of not only the city centre, but the Sheffield Hallam campus as well. The menu remains true to the regional cuisines of India and Bangladesh, combining sophisticated flavours, traditional spices and contemporary twists to create tantalisingly aromatic dishes. It’s the simple things in life that are often the best, and when the once overflowing student loan dwindles down to the last few pennies, sometimes the simple things are all we can afford. Not to worry, cheap doesn’t mean bad, it can mean great if you know where to look. If you’re after cheap and cheerful then look no further than The Cavendish, one of Sheffield’s two Scream pubs. Located right on the thoroughfare of West Street, the glowing yellow beacon that is Cavendish summons all students into its arms. Classed as a pub by most, that’s exactly what it is and exactly what it makes; pub food. Hearty, stomach filling fare that nevertheless manages to be something more. Their burger selection is tempting, or perhaps opt for another of their traditional stomach warmers like Lasagne, Fish and Chips or Sausages and Mash. If you want to deviate from the norm then The Cavendish caters for you too, with such taste bud tickling dishes as Meatball Arrabbiata, Chilli Chicken Chimichanga, Thai Style Stir Fry and Falafel Burger on the menu, again all selling for pocket friendly prices. We popped in for a cheeky BBQ Chicken and Bacon Melt (£3.50) – a baguette overflowing with cheese, chicken, bacon and BBQ sauce, sided by a generous dose of curly fries. Definitely filled a considerably large gap, yet we just about managed to cram in a massive slice of Chocolate Fudge Cake (£3.95) – oozing with rich sauce and gooey goodness, just the way it should be. Desserts are all 2 for 1 so be sure to bring a hungry friend along with you! The icing on the cake? Grab one of Scream’s Yellow Cards to cash in on fantastic offers and deals. In addition to this, it is still a pub with a range of drinks and fantastic deals - the Cavendish is literally, student paradise.

............................................................................ Vodka. A magical spirit helping to tease distinctly tame nights out into something of a wild one. And where in Sheffield has the most? Revolution, of course, situated in the stylish West One Complex near Devonshire Green.
One of the most beautiful bars in the city, Revolution is an eye-pleasing mix of dark wood, shiny lights and, of course, an impressively diverse bar, with plenty of shiny bottles twinkling out for your attention. The bar is split into four areas – the main bar area where the nightly magic happens, the lesser experienced Hidden Bar round the back of the stairs and the upstairs Sky Bar, sometimes open on busy nights but usually available to hire out for parties. The things that set Revolution apart from the rest though are their intriguingly flavoured vodka shots and ever-changing cocktail menu. Shot flavours range from the domesticated (Cola Cube, Very Cherry, Big Apple) to the curious (Birthday Cake, Love Candy, Choccy Toffee) to the downright dangerous (Chilli – definitely not one for the faint of heart). Racks of six shots are something of a tradition to get the party started, starting from £9.

The cocktail masters at Revolution change their menu regularly, offering the well-loved regulars like Little Miss Sunshine and The Jammy B*stard, with something new, like The Porn Star (Stolichnaya Vanil and passion fruit infused SKYY vodkas paired with fresh lime juice and passion fruit, finished off with Bella Prosecco). Although their tipples are a bit on the pricey side of the student loan, there are definitely worth it, more than pipping a lacklustre JD and coke to the post. Pop in on a Tuesday night for Tossers, a hell of a deal where those lucky enough to guess the correct flip of the barperson’s coin receive their entire round again for free, or on a Thursday for Round For A Pound – as the name suggests, double your round for just one tiny little pound. No excuses then for missing out on the vodka-fuelled joy that is Revolution.

Norman Babcock can see dead people, and talk to them too; unfortunately no one else in his small New England town, Blithe Hollow, can. Bullied at school and ostracised by his family because of his strange tendencies, Norman falls in with fellow outcast and chubby comic relief, the eccentric Neil Downe. When Norman experiences ominous visions of Blithe Hollow’s dark past, it becomes apparent that the town is in danger, but when nobody heeds his warnings, it is left up to Norman and Neil to save the town when the spirit of a witch hanged three hundred years ago raises her Puritan accusers as a horde of rampaging zombies.
ParaNorman is the second feature film from stopmotion studio, Laika, Inc. following the sublime Neil Gaiman adaptation, Coraline, and though the film treads similar ‘dark-children’s tale’ territory, ParaNorman is a far lighter and, unfortunately, less substantial affair. Début director Chris Butler also penned the screenplay, in which there is lots to admire, particularly for horror buffs who will relish the subtle nods to the films of Sam Rami and, less subtly George Romero. The film falls a little short however with its pacing; a lack of focus occasionally makes it feel like a succession of good ideas pieced together with a narrative thrown in for good measure. For older viewers, one can’t help but think that similar ideas have been done better elsewhere, with the balance of subversiveness and the desire to give the younger viewers something to chew, feeling a little off. There are a few adults who will suggest ParaNorman is too much for the youngsters, but the fact is, seven year old me would have loved this. Then again, I was a strange child.

Gilderoy (Toby Jones) is a nebbish but remarkably talented sound engineer from Dorking. His speciality is capturing natural sounds bird calls and babbling brooks for British natural history films. The eponymous Italian studio contacts Gilderoy to provide sound effects and record dialogue on their latest flick, ‘The Equestrian Vortex’, a seedy, sadistic, sexually explicit giallo film. Gilderoy is shocked by this dark side of European cinema, but duly goes about smashing vegetables and sizzling fat to synthesise the sounds of extreme violence that the audience encounters only through his eyes. As the claustrophobic confines of his workplace begin to close in on him, the boundaries between reality and fiction begin to blur and Gilderoy becomes a part of the nightmare.
British director Peter Strickland’s second feature is an incredibly European affair, influenced in equal parts by Polanski, Bertolucci and Bergman, as well as the legendary giallo directors whose work informs the mostly unseen film-within-a-film here. It is also, probably the best British film of the year. Berberian Sound Studio is a taut psychological thriller an unnerving sense horror and – in its third reel particularly – Lynchian mind-f*ck. It does all this in the guise of a “behind-the-curtain” look at cinema - somehow the most distressing image of the year is that of a crushed marrow. Toby Jones once again reiterates that he is one of the finest character actors working today, and the Italian support – flamboyant, sinister, flamboyantly sinister - serve him well. The final half an hour might be too much for some, but for those willing, Berberian Sound Studio rewards dividends.

To Rome With Love Rated 12A, Comedy Director: Woody Allen

Following on from his uneven London trilogy, the much better Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the wonderful Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen’s latest European love letter arrives in British cinemas this month, some four months after an underwhelming reaction in the States. The film consists of a series of four vignettes - a worker who wakes up to find himself a celebrity, an architect who takes a trip back to the street he lived on as a student, a young couple on their honeymoon and a funeral director who has a talent for singing in the shower - with each story’s ensemble cast exploring all of Allen’s usual tropes; sex, love, death, intellectualism, relationships and fame.
Midnight in Paris, but this reviewer is of the opinion that second rate Allen is still more than worthy of admission price. While the film stretches Allen’s customary ninety minute running time out to one hundred and twelve, the episodic format means that characters still feel underdeveloped, and despite the city’s enduring beauty, the shots of Rome feel intrusively touristy. There are plenty of positives to take from To Rome With Love however; the laughs are plentiful - Alec Baldwin’s architect story being a particular highlight – and when Allen’s writing hits its peaks, it’s beyond compare. It’s a treat to see Allen in his first acting role in six years as well; much the same, only his whine is deeper.
To Rome With Love is a lesser Allen film, and a distinct step down from the best-in-a-decade

You get bored watching the TV, you change the channel, right? As students we’re constantly getting bored, always looking for inspiration, constantly embracing what’s new. That’s exactly what hip hop artist Frank Ocean has chosen to explore in de’but album, ‘Channel Orange’, which was released on 10th July. Ocean takes the concept of channel hopping, and through the use of synthetic sounds such as static, bleeps and electro stutters, simulates a channel change at the end of each track. The result is a body of work that constantly grips the imagination, never leaning towards stale and tired.
Self titled albums often suggest a sense of self exploration. However, rarely do they ever live up to the hype. As students, identity is a key question; we pretty much spend three years figuring out who we are! Ora, on her debut release, ‘Ora’, which was released 27th August, has made a real stab at using her debut effort to establish who she wishes to be as an artist. Don’t get me wrong, some of the tracks (‘How We Do’, ‘Hot Right Now’) are clearly about making sales and climbing up the charts. However, amongst the rolling synths, Klaxon style beats and vocal distortions that so clearly define ‘Ora’ as a dance-pop product, there are moments of introspection and realisation. The common theme is of change and self realisation (‘R.I.P’, ‘Shine Ya Light’, ‘Love and War’, ‘Uneasy’), which explores Ora’s mindset as she transcends to new heights both professionally and personally.
How much do we now know about life on the wrong side of the tracks? Admittedly, for a lot of us, it’s not much. We have the stereotypes we see on the TV and read about in the media and it immediately colours those unfortunate souls in a negative light. Some parts of that are accurate, some parts aren’t. Plan B, in his latest album ‘Ill Manors’, looks to address these misconceptions, giving us an honest portrait of the lives of those who don’t have the same prospects as the rest of us.
The different channels that comprise the album centre on themes of love and loss (‘Thinkin’ ‘Bout you’, ‘Sierra Leone’), the negative effects of consumer culture (‘Super Rich Kids’, ‘Sweet Life’, ‘Not Just Money’) and philosophy (‘Monks’, ‘Bad Religion’). Along with smooth traditional R&B vocals and fantastic electro synths, what we get is an album that explores the different facets of modern life in such a way that he reaches insightful conclusions at a rapid fire pace. Lecturers should take their cue from Frank; he knows how to get us thinking without ever leaving us bored, just waiting for class to end!
In total, this album is clearly made for the Corp dance floor. However, there are moments in there which are honest and true, and make it an album that we can relate to, as they present an Ora who is still realising who she is, just like we are.
Littered with rolling drums, fast spoken raps, gospel style male vocals, sporadic stuttered synths and electro distortions, the album immediately sets a musically dark tone as Plan B plays the narrator. Throughout the body of work he explores various parts of downtrodden life, such as the general chaos of society (‘Ill Manors’, ‘I am the Narrator’, ‘Pity The Plight’), regret (‘Playing With Fire’, ‘Deepest Shame’, ‘Lost My Way’), the effect of nature versus nurture (‘Drug Dealer’, ‘The Runaway’, ‘A Great Day for Murder) and ultimately, redemption (‘Live Once’, ‘Falling Down’). This album certainly explores life below the breadline. However it goes further, not just narrating but playing devil’s advocate. It made me question, which I think is a good thing. I want to be challenged and the fact that I was kept on my toes made the album work for me. I think it’ll be what makes it work for you too.

This month we talk to the guys behind De:Bug, one of Sheffield’s most influential nights! Can you give us a quick run down of De:Bug, for all those new students looking for something a bit edgier than the usual chart dance vibes? Mate, we have put the party back in the Steel City. Sheffield is kicking right off now, and this is just the start! It’s such a good time to be a student in Sheffield; all the guys and girls who have been coming down to De:Bug over the last year have 100 per cent contributed to making the unique vibe we have at our parties. There is no pretention, which is common with some other events, all we bring is a straight up party ethos, and we want all your new students involved! De:Bug has had some pretty big names in the past, like Russ Yallop, Eats Everything and Jordan Peak at DQ, then the massive jump to Fez, busting out Laura Jones and Dyed Soundorom! This obviously makes you stand out from the other underground nights having such influential artists play. One question that’s been our minds is how on earth did you get such big names to play in Sheffield? Well, the one thing we have on our agenda when we sit down and plan our parties is: let’s make the next one BIGGER! This will never change. It’s hard work as we have set some really high standards for ourselves. All I can say is, the hard work pays off, we look after our headliners, they LOVE our crowd, then word seems to have travelled through the industry. Now, we are incredibly privileged to have
massive artists wanting to come and party at De:Bug, especially now that Sheffield is right back on the map! There are a lot of new up and coming underground nights such as Drumro[], Cargo, Dan Sane, Seven:Seven, Ryad etc, which all have very unique entities to each. What makes you stand out from the rest apart from the heavy acts? You’re right mate, and this is great for Sheffield. In this city we’ve gone for years with a huge lack of strong underground events. I’m really excited about what each event brings to Sheff. In terms of how De:Bug is different, we have this ridiculous connection with a lot of our regulars, it’s mental. When De:Bug hits Sheffield, it’s not just a club night. It’s a massive social event for Sheffield. We really have got the right crowd coming down - there’s a beautiful mixture of hugely up for it students who are very passionate about underground music, coupled with clubbers from Sheffield and further afield who just come for the De:Bug vibe. The one thing that is unique about De:Bug is the crowd/ vibe! AMAZE!
turned up for a two hour set, and did five hours! Half way through his set he screamed in my face, ‘I WANT TO COME BAAACK’, then sticking his tongue out at the bouncers at 7:30am blasting tunes out, because he didn’t want to stop, was amazing. Seeing a DJ like Dyed come to Sheffield and have so many compliments to pay to the crowd also meant a massive amount to us! Do you think there is a place in Sheffield for a monthly De:bug? I know you guys take a few months out now and again, it would be nice to see a monthly event calendar with all the crazy artists on. We were monthly up until 2011, but we were forever wanting to put on parties that were unrivalled. This was difficult, as the underground demographics were only just growing. Sheffield wasn’t quite there to support big monthly nights then. So we decided to go bi-monthly, but put even bigger parties on. This may well change, a lot more people from around the UK, not just in Sheffield, are coming to underground parties in the city. I think you’re going to be seeing a lot more of De:Bug!
So… Fez Club! Is that it now? No more DQ? (We used to go to Fez years ago when it was a mini, dirty, after hours rave session, what they’ve done opening it up makes all the difference). (Laughs) Well, it’s more than likely we were both pulling faces there together at some point, man! Without the Republic (RIP), the Fez, in my opinion, is the most iconic venue in Sheffield. When we heard it was getting a revamp we knew that was going to be the future home for the BUG! DQ has been amazing for us, they are a very supportive venue, and really helped nurture De:Bug to what it is now. The Fez team have taken the baton, so to speak, we have been working on some wicked customisations for the club that you aren’t going to see at other parties there. This is something we are dead excited about, can’t say any more for now though!
This is our Freshers issue! Do you have any nights on during Freshers Week? You also have Dj W!ld playing in October that will be the next big one for you guys - any plans to make this one bigger and better than the others? Indeed we do, I’m glad you asked! We have got a wicked party lined up during Freshers Week. On Tuesday 25th of September we are taking over The Harley with De:Bug Presents . . LUKE POMPEY (Love Not Money). This is going to be mega. Luke is the label boss/ owner of Love Not Money Records based over in Leeds. LNM have been putting out some amazing music over the last year, picking out up and coming artists like Matt Fear and David Garfitt, developing them and also releasing jams from established artists such as Dale Howard and Darius Syrossian! We love what the LNM team are doing and Luke is going to have a very special set lined up!
How did it make you feel when Dyed Soundorom wanted to carry on playing that very magical night? All I remember was filthy bass pumping through the floor all night… YES! I’m glad you remember something! To be fair, we’d had aspirations to have Dyed on for a long time. In my opinion he is a flawless DJ, I’d seen him loads before making the booking, in particular one Freak ‘n’ Chic showcase he did with Dan G; he left me in pieces, he was incredible. So when it came to us hosting Dyed you can imagine how mind blowing it was. He

Finally the time came and the most anticipated gadget of the year was released this month - the iPhone 5. But what makes it so different from the 4s?
The first thing that surprised us was the size of the device, boasting a massive 4inch screen which rivals that of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Such a large screen allows for an extra fix of icons to squeeze in, meaning more apps are at your fingertips on one springboard, without making the screen feel cramped. The 3:2 ratio screen is great for watching wide screen movies, however there are few setbacks. One example is that some thirdparty apps won’t look that great, sometimes stretched or with a big black box appearing at the top and bottom, due to most apps having been made for the iPhone 3 or 4 dimensions. Another problem is the iPhone still takes images in this old 4:3 format. However, by using the new panoramic addon feature to take a full screen shot, holding your phone in one place to start and moving it around, the phone will capture a series of images and collect them into one flush panoramic image. The iPhone is not only lighter but a strong durable piece, premium quality with a hardened screen. It also comes with 4G Lte which isn’t even available in the UK yet and may not be until 2014 as a fully working service. This phone up it is a device with a lot of changes, but are they for the better? You decide...
