Uncover yourself from the mound of Easter eggs you’ve submerged yourself in, lick your chocolate smothered chops and take a peek at the pages of this month’s issue of The Student Magazine. And what a sugary fest we have you this month! To quell your celebrity craving, our interview with disc spinning maestro, Radio 1 DJ Danny Howard should be just the fix, or how about trilby wielding hottie, Bruno Mars? And for the raunchy amongst you, we chatted for a few minutes with the stunning burlesque princess, Amber Topaz. Last month we presented student haven, Ecclesall Road, and this issue we cast our probing noses into the eclectic world of the London Road area. Packed with goodies ranging from Oriental tastes at Noodle Inn, to the tapas treats at La Mama, this area is somewhere you need to investigate with the help of our Wild West map. Of course, we’ve also sprinkled hundreds of thousands of our regular features in to make up this delicious issue, and don’t forget to flip for our unique Chinese version.

Piccolos Are you trying to find a quiet, romantic setting to take a date to, or maybe just a good quality restaurant for graduation day? In the city centre that’s no easy feat as given that many of the restaurants are chains, you are unlikely to find a place with an authentic and traditional atmosphere. Well, we have the answer: Piccolos. Piccolos is a family run, Italian restaurant, which boasts a traditional and inviting atmosphere to make anyone’s night just that little bit more special. Over the past 15 years, since the opening way back in 1998, the restaurant has gained a reputation as one of the best independent eateries in the Steel City and is still going strong in this vein. The two floor restaurant is decorated as would be a bistro in Italy, and once inside the door you feel as though you’re immediately transported there. Think an intimate table for two engulfed by a luscious white tablecloth and lit by candle light. The extensive menu includes Italian favourites such as Spaghetti Carbonara, Lasagne and homemade Garlic Bread. Each meal is prepared on site from scratch from the finest ingredients, which explains why it tastes so wonderfully fresh. A team of specially trained chefs use only the most traditional Italian recipes, meaning that you can experience the real taste of Italy from the comfort of Sheffield. Their specialities include their divine fish, lamb, chicken, steaks and risotto dishes, plus their Sicilian Panacotta is something their loyal customers come back for time and time again.

restaurant to see what all the fuss is about and, we have to say, we were not disappointed! The relaxed and enticing atmosphere meant that we were all immediately at ease inside; shortly aided by a large glass of the finest red wine! The delectable food was all that was promised; delicious and moreish. The homemade garlic bread was being baked as we walked in the door and the scent filled the room, making us salivate. The lasagne was like nothing we had ever tasted before; the concoction of flavours was simply gorgeous. This would make the perfect place for the very special occasion that is your postgraduation meal and, rather luckily, students get a 10 per cent discount with an NUS card. Book now for graduation, as reservations for Piccolos are going to be coming in thick and fast! 3 Convent Walk, Sheffield, S3 7RX 0114 249 5040 www.piccolositalian.co.uk

Every month, Adam O’Neill brings us all the celeb gossip from 105 Capital FM HQ. He’s on Capital across Yorkshire every afternoon between 4-7pm! Hawaiian-born heartthrob, Bruno Mars, is filling the radio at the moment with his undeniably catchy, reggae fusion-R&B tunes, having recently released his second album, ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’. The trilby flaunting, cheeky chap is bringing The Moonshine Jungle World Tour to Sheffield on the 12th October 2013 and Adam caught up with him.

Bruno, you are a bit of a heartthrob with our listeners, if you were in a lonely hearts column how would you describe yourself? (Laughs) Umm - I’m brave, courageous and I love to work out ALL the time! The fans have been asking for you to take your shirt off but you keep talking about having two extra nipples, is that true? Nah, I made it up, all the little girls on Twitter kept asking for photos of me with my shirt off. I was like noooo you don’t want to see that, so I told them I had extra nipples! I need you to prove you were lying; come on, Bruno! You headlined at the Capital Jingle Bell Ball last year - what was it like for you when you performed at the 02 Arena? I loved it! I love the crowd out here and they give me something different. The audience is different everywhere you go. You come to the UK and the audience is different to the audience in America. I like that all the audiences are different. I

love the crowd in the UK, you guys get down! You are wild and I can relate to that. One of my favourites from you is ‘Grenade’ - really amazing. The track is timeless, it’s beautiful. What is your memory of making it? The best moment of my whole career is when I sang that song for the first time in front of an audience and nobody knew it. I was in New York doing a showcase and I sang it. We were struggling a bit with the band in rehearsal, we just couldn’t get it right and then I said, ‘Maybe I’ll just do it with my guitar’. I was so nervous and then when I sang it, the audience all took a breath, it was a special moment. Recently you performed at The Grammys; the performance was a tribute to Bob Marley and you also shared the stage with Sting. I can definitely hear The Police in your music - would you say that was true, that they were an influence? Yeah definitely, growing up I was a big fan of Bob Marley and The Police. It was amazing to be on the stage together showing how Bob Marley’s music is still

showing in today’s music. Justin Timberlake performed - he is back! Are you excited? I am very happy he is back. I remember growing up and watching him do his thing the first time round. He’s got some massive tunes and it’s really cool to see him back. JT is going on tour with Jay Z this summer - right now, if you could share the stage with anybody, who would that be? Right now in my career I would say the Spice Girls. Woah, ok? The Spice Girls? Yeah. Well, firstly I’d sing ‘Wannabe’, as that’s my shower song, and then they could sing ‘Grenade’, and then I’d sing, ‘2 Become 1’. AMAZING! Looking forward to a little Spice Girls tribute on the tour in Sheffield! What else can we expect from the show? This tour is going to be one for the books and that’s all I’m saying!

Diversity is the London Road and Abbeydale Road area’s middle name, and with a range of restaurants and shops from across the globe you could be forgiven for mistaking this popular Sheffield student hood for a worldwide tour in just a few steps. This is the place to go if you fancy a taste of culture without the expense of having to actually travel and, let’s face it, the price of a student single has to be a hundred times cheaper than a flight across the planet. The area is always a favourite for students moving out of university accommodation and into one of the most interesting and varied places to live in the city. If you’re not too sure of the best places around the area though, never fear - The Student Magazine is here to show you the way, and this time we’re bringing a little bit of the Wild West to our pages!

Page 14

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

Running parallel to Bramall Lane, London Road runs straight through Sharrow, Highfield, Lowfield, and Heeley. Alongside a variety of pubs, restaurants and shops the road plays host to a library (fancy getting away from the hustle of the students? The library could be your answer) and a former cinema. The road was originally ended at a Toll Bridge which, at the time, was also the boundary between Yorkshire and Derbyshire! Abbeydale Road carries on the road further up towards the flush area of Dore.

World Cuisine

If you like spice, you’ve come to the right place. The area has a great selection of food with a kick for you to try (if you’re brave enough). For the oriental tastes buds try the likes of Noodle Inn or New Hong Kong Wok. Fancy something a little Hispanic? Why not try the jalapeño filled temptations that Amigos have to offer, or the tapas treats of La Mama? If, on the other hand, you’re afraid of a little chilli and crave something else, there is always the English fall back of a nice bag of fish and chips!

Missing home?

London Road is an absolute life lifesaver for Chinese students who are missing their home comforts. With the large Chinese student community within Sheffield, it’s really no wonder that there seem to be so many shops popping up selling produce and ingredients from the Asian nation. London Road is a prime example of this, offering students who miss the taste of home exactly what they need to make it in Sheffield, like Cake R Us and Noodle Inn Hot Pot.

Get Antique

The area isn’t all about the nosh, however. Everything you could ever dream about lies on London Road and Abbeydale Road, from corner shops to hairdressers to antique shops. Sheffield’s antique quarter lies on Abbeydale Road, packed with kitsch bit and pieces to have a dabble in and decorate your dull student accommodation. Pop into the Aladdin’s Cove that is the Vault.

Latin Tapas Bar & Restaurant Don’t let the depressingly chilly Sheffield weather get you down – we’ve found a little taste of Latin sun hidden away on Abbeydale Road. With an outside terrace, azure frontage and rustic wooden interior, La Mama is instantly an exotic wonder from the outset. They serve an extensive tapas menu, and judging by their Eat Sheffield awards for 2011 and 2012, their culinary treats haven’t gone unnoticed! The selection on the menu is between a range of hot and cold individual tapas dishes, all priced around £3-6, accompaniments and salsas, or the set platters at £14.95 each, making the choice for you and available in Meat, Fish or Vegetarian. La Mama recommends that you choose three to four tapas dishes per person, so after much deliberation, our choice was made and the food arrived swiftly. We went for the Empanadas de Queso (two lightly fried, Chilean cheese pastry parcels), Langostinos al Ajillo (grilled king prawns cooked in garlic and fresh parsley and drizzled with extra virgin oil), Calamares Fritos (lightly fried, crispy fresh squid served with Ali-Oli dip), Costillas de Cerdo (sizzling barbeque spare ribs), Pan Frito con Chorizo

(chorizo pan fried with garlic and homemade bread), Seabass a la Paila (fillet of seabass cooked in a traditional clay pot with garlic, onions and strips of fresh mixed peppers in a rich white wine and fresh tomato sauce), Anticuchos de Cordero (lamb marinated in cumin lemon and fresh thyme, chargrilled on a skewer) and Patatas con Romero (new potatoes). Each dish was flavoured to perfection, packed with Latino spice and oozing with deliciousness. A favourite was the Anticuchos de Cordero – the lamb was tender and juicy, served on a grilled kebab with peppers. The Seabass was light and soft, flaking off the bone, while the Pan Frito con Chorizo was a unique dish, tasting lush. At La Mama it’s Happy Hour on Monday all evening, with four tapas dishes for £12, 2 for 1 on Peroni and Brahma, 2 for 1 on small glasses of house wine and buy 1 get 1 half price on cocktails. The tapas only deals are also available Tuesday-Thursday, 6pm-7.30pm, and live music tinkles alongside your tapas at least once a month – the next is 13th April. Local artists’ work can be displayed inside the restaurant and there’s no charge to hire the venue out for private parties Sunday-Thursday. www.thestudentmag.co.uk

Appearing on Radio 1 is something of a dream for many aspiring DJs, and the buzzing Danny Howard is definitely living the dream. Having caught the station’s and the nation’s attention after winning Radio 1’s search for a superstar DJ, with skills honed in his hometown of Blackpool, Danny secured a range of DJ treats from reporting on Creamfields to hosting a 12 hour slot as part of the Ibiza takeover. Now the host of Dance Anthems every Saturday from 4-7pm, dance aficionado Danny is hitting the clubs on the Ministry of Sound Clubbers Guide 2013 Tour, soaring into Sheffield’s Plug on Saturday 13th April. In the run up to his appearance on the decks, we grabbed a few moments with him for a chat.

Page 32

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

STU: Who are your influences when you’re behind the decks? Danny: I’m influenced by a couple of DJs; the main one that I always say is Erick Morillo. He’s a very big House DJ, he’s huge all over the world, and I saw him play at a place called The Syndicate in my hometown of Blackpool. I was absolutely blown away when I saw him play - his energy behind the decks, the way he interacts with the crowd, the way he just controls the crowd simply by music selection is just incredible. The important thing for a DJ is the music selection, and he just did it in a way that he had every single person in that room in the palm of his hand. I saw him play again in Pacha in Ibiza and it was the same, and I always wanted to emulate that. He was the one really that influenced me, him and also Eddie Halliwell. He’s a guy who has amazing energy and he’s just exciting to watch, and I think that’s important when you’re DJing now these days, you’ve got to be able to look like you’re enjoying it as well as just playing the tunes, so he’s someone that I always look up to. STU: 2012 was a huge year for you! What was the highlight? Danny: The ultimate highlight of 2012 was getting the actual Radio 1 show, because I’d say it was a dream come true. It’s something that you’d never imagine to actually happen, you can dream about it and wish for something like that to happen but you don’t ever think it will, so when it did it was a real ‘pinch me’ moment to actually get that slot. It’s given me incredible exposure on a national scale, which I’m so grateful for, and I think the highlight is every single week, because I’ve sort of become a part of people’s Saturday night plans, which is crazy for me to say. And that is the biggest thing for me, people texting in saying that, ‘I wasn’t going to go out tonight but I just listened to your show and now I’m going out’ - it’s just amazing for me to have sort of influence on people. I suppose that it’s a good thing because you can have more and more people out listening to new music, enjoying time in the clubs, so I think that’s very important; I’m just happy to be a part of that. STU: Tell us about your Ministry of Sound Club Tour, which is stopping off at Plug in Sheffield on April 13th, what can we expect from that? Danny: It’s a long standing brand, Ministry of Sound has been going for years and years - I remember seeing the adverts on TV for the compilations, when I was nine or ten years old. I just mixed their latest series of that and it’s a massive honour for me, and a privilege, and again another moment where I thought, ‘How has this actually happened?’, but it has, and off the back of the album I’m doing a load of club gigs up and down the UK as part of the tour. Sheffield and Plug is one I’m looking forward to out of all of them , because I played there as part of the Freshers Week line up and the crowd and the people that were there really, really went for it on the dancefloor, so I know it’s going to be a good night and a great atmosphere, so I really can’t wait for that.

STU: Your rework of Example’s ‘Perfect Replacement’ is receiving a lot of buzz - how did you two get involved? Danny: I’d been playing a lot of his tracks on the radio and we spoke to each other on Twitter a bit, and it was actually at Creamfields last year - I was broadcasting my show live, backstage. He’d just come off stage and was sort of hanging around on the show, we had a little interview on the show, we just got chatting and we put forward the idea of me remixing one of his next tracks. It was quite a cheeky thing to do, but I suppose if you don’t ask you don’t get, and he was accustomed to the idea and we talked some more and it just all happened after that really. It started when I spoke to him at Creamfields last year, so it finally happened in February, when the track came out. STU: What dance tracks are you backing for 2013? Danny: Not specifically any tracks, because it’s the time of the year when you’re getting new tracks sent and then it’s not ‘til summer really that the ones that are receiving the most buzz come to the surface. But in terms of artists to watch out for, it’s definitely the young producers of dance music that are just coming through. We saw a bit of them last year in 2012 and I believe this will be a big year for the likes of Madeon, Porter Robinson, Alesso – those sort of guys who released big tracks last year. I think this year they’ll take it to the next level and we should really look out for them, because I think they’ve got some big stuff in the pipeline. STU: As a Radio One DJ, you must have met some pretty big names. Who’s the most famous person you’ve met? Danny: Being on Radio 1, and especially being involved in their events, pushes you forward in that position that you get to meet a lot of people that are putting music out in the charts; a lot of famous faces you would never think you would meet. I don’t know really, I’m trying to think who’s the one… In terms of dance music, I would say, the likes of Calvin Harris, we’ve had him on the show, he’s been great to talk to. David Guetta, one of the biggest DJs in the world, I’ve met him, Tiesto… I literally sound like I’m namedropping, but all these people you get to meet who you’ve listened to for years and been influenced by their music, to get to meet them in person is a huge honour. STU: What can we expect you to deliver for the rest of 2013? Danny: 2013 is a big year for me in terms of the gigs that I’m going to be playing this summer, in terms of the festivals and the shows in Ibiza that I’m going to be doing. I don’t think they’ve been announced yet, apart from Global Gathering, so I can’t say too much! Global Gathering is one of the ones I’m looking forward to because it was one if the first, well, the first ever festival I went to, so to come back and play that festival is quite a special thing for me. Just Ibiza, the gigs I’m looking forward to and 2013 in terms of the radio show, keeping a profile growing off that every single week is important to me. Also my productions - my music is something I’m really focusing on, so maybe look out for some new tracks coming from me later in the year.

STUDENTSTROLOGY

You are a person suited to modern conveniences, Aquarius, and you’re the type who’s literally glued to your smartphone. A little heads up - it might cause you a few problems this month but never fear, you’ll get to relearn that most old fashioned of social institutions: talking face to face!

If you’re a third year, Pisces, then March is going to prove stressful; not only you, but your mates have dissertation deadlines looming and all the stress may cause fights to break out. Don’t let your natural desire to please get in the way; stand up for yourself.

With the routine of second term work setting in, your concentration and dedication may begin to flag this March. Don’t let it; fire up your natural enthusiasm, Aries, and take the metaphorical bull by the horns. You’ll be pleased you do when you get your next essay marks back!

This month, the achievements of others may just outstrip your own, Taurus, and your natural tendency towards jealousy and resentment may become an issue. Don’t let it, everyone has ups and downs in their work and your time to shine will come.

This March, Gemini, your itch to travel might just flare up. Why don’t you indulge it for once? Take a small day trip and see where it takes you. We’re not saying plan an around the world trip, but trying something different could lead to something you’d never expect.

You’re normally the care taker, Cancer, you’re usually the parental figure in the flat, making sure everyone’s ok. Unfortunately, this month you might need a little TLC yourself. Let people take care of you for once, you can’t be care taker all the time.

April is here, and with it looms frantic dissertation typing, essay deadlines and, for the unlucky ones amongst you, revision. Never fear, our Studentstrologist is here once more to prepare you for what lies ahead with his fearfully accurate predictions. Beware, innocent students; the universe works in strange ways and you’d be foolish not to take heed of his warnings…

Be careful this month Leo, we know you tend towards the extravagant and in some cases that’s ok; in others it isn’t. You need to watch your finances and make sure you don’t go over your overdraft limit – the banks charge through the nose for that!

A group project might just prove to be a metaphorical minefield for you this month, Virgo. You’re a natural perfectionist and group projects mean you can’t be. Make an effort, but loosen the reigns a little - other people’s contributions matter too!

You’re naturally attractive, Libra, everyone recognises this and it’s always nice to know people appreciate you. Don’t let it get to your head this month; beauty is only skin deep and it’s not worth tearing out your beautifully coiffed hair over.

Things in your life may be going a little faster than you’d like, Scorpio. You’re naturally resistant to change and with the end of the year looming ever closer, it might start getting to you. Don’t let it – uni is all about having fun while you can!

You are a sociable person, Sagittarius, there’s no doubt about it, and you’re the life and soul of any party. However, with your bank balance this month, you can’t afford it. How about staying in? It is possible to socialise without booze, you know!

We know your reputation is important to you Capricorn; however we feel we need to warn you that it might take a knock this month. Lighten up, don’t let people get to you and in the words of Miss Gaga, “learn to love yourself ”!

Landmark Restaurant Landmark Restaurant

43 George Street,, Sheffield, S1 2PF 0114 275 6064 Doesn’t the long wait for service really get on your nerves? Sometimes, you’re waiting for your food longer than it actually takes to enjoy the meal. Even when your food arrives at your table, the portion sizes are always so small that you’re not even getting your money’s worth. However, as students we need more to fuel us through those long days of revision! That’s where Landmark Restaurant comes in.

Restaurant. Entertainment is the name of the game at Landmark, and one particularly type of entertainment that gets everybody on their feet and really gets the party started is karaoke! Step to the mic and sing your little heart out as your mates raid the buffet, in karaoke rooms to ensure optimal fun with minimal embarrassment! Pop down to discover what Oriental treats await you at Landmark Restaurant and dive into their irresistible oriental buffet in beautiful new surroundings.

Located at 43 George Street, near the Sheffield Interchange, it’s the answer to all our food prayers. Formally Jumbo, the restaurant is being re-launched as Landmark in May, with complete refurbishment being undertaken in April, under new management. Landmark is such good value, doing things a little differently from most restaurants out here. Instead of having a set menu, food is served in a buffet style, with everything you can imagine and more as every scintillating, mouth-watering, succulent dish known to the oriental cooking tradition is featured. Enjoy their Oriental Buffet, Korean Buffet, Chinese Hotpot Buffet and Szechuan and Cantonese Dishes Ala Carte. You’re spoilt for choice. However, fantastic food isn’t the only attraction to taking a night to relax to the Landmark www.thestudentmag.co.uk

The Problem with Tattoos By Charlotte Grainger Published April 2013 When people said (and by people I mean my parents) “Don’t get a tattoo, you’ll never get a job”, I thought they were exaggerating... So I did the cliché thing of getting a matching tattoo with my best friend about three years ago. The tattoo itself is small, it’s a magpie drawn out in monochrome and is hidden on my left ankle. It’s become apparent that it’s not only employers who will judge you for a bit of ink. My boyfriend recently told me, after I’d met his mum, that I shouldn’t have it on show around her. In the same week my cousin told me to hide it when we were in a car with her parents. In both situations I was quite offended. The idea that having a tattoo can change how you’re seen as a person is ridiculous, but in some cases it seems to be the truth and a sad truth it is.

Ohm Sweet Ohm w/ Eats Everything @ Plug By Laura Keen Published April 2013

Just weeks away from the looming fate of the real working world, all assignments handed in and 6000 words into my dissertation, I couldn’t help but feel I deserved a small reward. Whilst I was pondering over what this reward would be, Eats Everything turned up at Plug and I accidentally (on purpose) acquired a ticket and before I knew it we were pulling on the glad rags and heading off into town. I still had to be slightly sensible as the end was nigh with the dissertation, so we headed to Wick At Both Ends for some equally sensible (ish) cocktails. If you haven’t experienced the taste-sensation that is a Wick cocktail, you have to get yourself down. The list of concoctions is the length of my arm and Monday to Friday they are included in happy hour between 5 and 9pm. Today we decided to go for a pomegranate infused Tobasco creation which came engulfed in flames (we adopted some questionable techniques to put them out), then headed straight for Plug in time to catch the earliest sets. Now Eats Everything was always going to gather a huge crowd, but to arrive just past midnight to a rammed club can only mean good things. Cry Wolf was on first and he was absolutely smashing it - house tunes like they should be, with huge vocals and steering away from the repetitive two-step tech-house beat. And then the next BIG news of the night: Plug now have ginger ale ON TAP. Soon it was time to head to the dance floor for Eats Everything’s big beats. With amazing light production they put on a crowd-moving, feetshuffling, roof-lifting set of vibes. Then I was summoned; this time to the back of the club which makes a nice change to the toilets/smoking area. The back wall was coated in vomit and we had a serious case of ‘man down’, so we sacrificed Squarehead’s set and beetled off to the taxi queue home for some much needed TLC.

Suiting Up, Marvel Style By Yasmine Gleghorn Published April 2013 There’s no hiding a true Marvel fan. They look out for any Stan Lee cameo and think there’s nothing more romantic than head-butting a Russian thug. More than anything, they always (always!) sit through the credits after any Marvel film. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re definitely not one of them. Maybe it’s the love for all things Wolverine or watching hours of Spiderman and X-Men cartoons online, but there’s no denying the superhero-loving geek I have inside. Not that I wanted to in the first place. Lately, it’s been impossible to hide at all, thanks to the approaching release of Iron Man 3. Robert Downing Jr returns as millionaire antihero Tony Stark. The scene set after The Avengers seemed bleak, which is reflected in the new film’s trailer. As the third instalment in the saga, the melancholic tone might be just what the film needs in order to stay fresh. While a detailed plot description has been kept under lock, the premise does say that our hero faces a question that has been haunting him for a long time: “Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?” Co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, Iron Man 3 is set for UK release on Thursday, April 25th.

Premier Red Devils? By Tom Hardy Published April 2013 Most people will probably agree, when I say that the name on the Premier League trophy this year has all but been decided. United are miles ahead at the top of the table and look as if they’re going to take the title back to the red side of Manchester. There’s no doubt that the signing of Robin Van Persie has had a direct effect on the Red Devils’ dominance this season. But if they do lift the trophy this May, will it be one of the weakest squads to ever win the Premier League? Take out the Dutch goal machine, Nemanja Vidic and (a hit-andmiss) Wayne Rooney, and there aren’t many more match winners in comparison to previous United championship-winning squads. Yes, the likes of Evra, Carrick and co. aren’t bad, but would they get into any other top four side? Giggs and Scholes - as brilliant as they have been down the years - just aren’t the same anymore. Therefore, a lot of the Red Devils’ success has to be down to the man at the top. Whether you like him or not, there’s no doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson’s managing skills are getting the best out of - what is in my eyes - a very average side.

Cubana

............................................................................

Walking the streets of this cold and windy city, you would not expect to find a place buzzing with Latin vibes and offering traditional tapas. A hidden Gem of Steel City, Cubana is hidden on Campo Lane just off West Street, which is great if you want to escape the drudgery of the main streets and sneak away for your own slice of Cuba, or maybe a slice of tortilla. When I visited Cubana I went with a large group of friends, which made ordering easy as we all ordered a couple of tapas dishes and shared. Like a traditional Cuban meal; everything is shared and everyone eats a lot. Each tapas dish costs around the £5 mark and this can potentially end up an expensive meal if you go in a small group, as you will want to try everything! Personally I loved the Costillas, that’s spare ribs cooked in a tangy BBQ sauce, and the Tortilla Tricolor, which is a traditional Spanish omelette slice. It’s probably best not to go there when you are absolutely starving as the dishes are not very big; in order to fill up people with larger appetites you could end up spending a small fortune. For what the prices lack in economy the bar makes up in atmosphere though. At night the restaurant is transformed into a mini Cuban party. Once we’d eaten we hit the dance floor to try our hand at salsa dancing!

BITES A Treat to Relish 371-373 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, S11 8PF Term time is coming to an end. You’ve worked long and hard (ahem) all year. You’re tired. You need to refuel. And believe us, Relish is the place to do it! The Eccy Road hangout (or kitchen, bar and social, as they call it) is known for proper food, big portions and bold flavours – which we find goes perfectly with a side order of great tunes from their retro jukebox. Alongside the regular menu (packed to the brim with such delights as stacked burgers, fish and chips, risottos, salads and more), the specials boards change daily, influenced by what excites the chefs, what’s available at the markets and dishes the team has enjoyed and developed. They

have a veggie board too – hurrah! There’s plenty on offer drinkswise too, with some good Thornbridge craft beers, an extensive wine list, cocktails, milkshakes, soft drinks, hot drinks and Café Cereza coffee. Still hunting for bargains? Head to Relish between 5-7pm weekdays for their Beat the Clock offer. The time you order your main from the special menu is the price you pay – can’t say fairer than that! Their Early Bird menu is also available every day with two courses for £12 or three for £15.

food, Relish is rough round the edges with a little bit of attitude. Their quirky room is somewhere to chill, relax and feel better when you leave than when you arrived. Great music, great drinks and staff who want to take care of you, all at your pace.

............................................................................

Sheffield is known for its steel industry, universities, The Arctic Monkeys, Meadowhall and The Full Monty, but nestled about threequarters of the way up Division Street is the American inspired, the Common Room sports bar. Popular among students and locals alike, The Common Room boasts an impressive food and drinks menu, American-size pool tables, ping pong table and more TVs than you can shake a pool cue at. The screens, dotted in perfect viewing positions around the bar, constantly show live sports - rugby, football and American football being house favourites - catching your attention during those breaks in conversation. Sitting in one of their navy booths, with your friends, a table full of drinks and posh packet of crisps, is the perfect starting point for a big night out in Sheff – especially on a weekend. The atmosphere is always buzzing and there’s such an array of people; it’s not solely for students, nor is it purely locals or men in suits. There are two bars which help to ease ‘bar congestion’, particularly on a Friday and Saturday as it does get pretty busy. For cocktail lovers, it’s cocktail menu heaven. Take your pick from classic beverages such as your Long Island Ice Tea, or choose from a selection of Mojitos, or mix it up and indulge your taste buds in something more quirky like the creamy Raspberry Bakewell or the Smartini (it actually has Smarties in the bottom)! Every cocktail is lovingly crafted by skilled bar staff, all with individual ways of presenting, but each just as satisfying.

Happy Hour is between 5pm9pm, Monday – Friday. Peckish? The Common Room serves fresh, USA-inspired grub - hot dogs, gourmet burgers, chicken and sharing platters. It is perfect for a full-blown meal or a quick, just-popping-in-forlunch-kind-of-thing after an afternoon of shopping.

If you’re after a relaxed drinking atmosphere with pals, but still feed off that vibrant, Wine, various draft lagers, a rather city feel, then The Common large collection of spirits, milkshakes Room will make you feel right and local cask ales are available. at home. Page 58

Frog & Parrot

94 Division Street Sheffield, S1 4GF 0114 272 1280 There are few establishments in the Steel City that cater to its quirky student clientele as much as The Frog and Parrot. Its off-the-wall décor and experimental fixtures and fittings have struck a chord with the student population of the city for years, as we identify with a place that constantly reinvents itself to define a unique character. Therefore, it’s the perfect drinking hole to sit back, relax and wax philosophical on life, the universe and pretty much everything. Music is in the heart of The Frog and Parrot. Many years before Jarvis Cocker fell out of their window onto Division Street, Joe Cocker played his breakthrough gig at the bar, before signing his record deal there. Remember that infamous Arctic Monkeys album sleeve featuring Chris McClure staggering out of a pub? Yep, that was The Frog and Parrot… as was the illicit gambling den of Boyzone, with Keith Duffy pulling pints whilst Ronan Keating orchestrates proceedings. The bar has a cheeky little talent of spotting, nurturing and delivering emerging talent – The Violet May, Alvarez Kings, Sarah Mac, Wet Nuns, Ruby Kid and The Blackbirds all played their first gig in the warm bosom of The Frog and Parrot.

What would a bar be without sensational tipples and hungerbusting bites? Nowhere, that’s where, so luckily The Frog and Parrot is loaded with drinks to fuel your wildest dreams (or hangovers, if their 1982, Guinness World Record breaking, home-brewed 16.9% beer is anything to go by). With a menu overflowing with mouth-watering treats, we can personally vouch for the Steak Baguette with Sweet Potato Fries! Great value for your money, and along with The Frog and Parrot’s conditioned cask ales, makes a great treat when your spirits are low and you need a pick me up. To immerse yourself in the world of breakthrough music, with a ribbit and squawk, The Frog and Parrot is here to be your live music venue, watering hole, canteen, film location, fashion emporium and hangout. gadgets

Every discerning student needs a nifty little piece of ingenious tech to get them going. We’ve scoured the oddest corners of the web to uncover the hottest gadgets you desperately need in your lives this month!

Google Glass

More information available later in 2013 ..................................................................

It’s almost here. Since testing started in April last year, Google Glass has been in its Project Glass phase. A fleet of competition-winning explorers have undertaken a trial to see how Glass stands up to the test of ‘real life’. Glass promises to capture high-quality video and respond to simple voice commands such as “take a picture” and “give directions to X.” Of course, it will be able to do all the other Google-y stuff like tell you what the weather’s like, translate phrases and send messages. The difference is all in the video camera and compact chips, placed on the top corner of the right-hand lens. The glasses themselves are very strong and surprisingly bendy. Sadly, they are not available with prescription lenses just yet but Google are in talks with eyewear companies like Ray Bann to provide prescription glasses, along with a cheaper consumer Glass model by the end of the year. Google Glass’ website showcases a point-of-view video of ballerinas twirling, skydivers jumping and a very excitable dog playing with a ball. Whether the level of interactivity shown in clips is accurate remains to be seen, but it looks impressive. In amongst the buzz, some Page 62

are still sceptical of the new eyewear, largely due to privacy issues and spam. Google, known for money-making through advertising, has reassured consumers that they will not be displaying adverts in Glass (not least because a distracting pop-up ad could lead to someone walking in to a lamp-post). For those waiting in anticipation, three apps for the glasses have already been unveiled, and at an interactive conference SXSW in Texas, first glimpses of the Evernote, Path and New York Times apps for Glass were shown.

Whether it turns out to be a raving success or an infamous flop, Google Glass could change the way we use technology for the foreseeable future. Who knows, maybe some (very lucky) students will be ‘glassing’ lectures by this time next year!

e Smokies www.esmokies.co.uk It’s that time of year again; exam season. Are you getting more and more stressed about it all as the deadline looms? Are you thinking of reaching just one more time for that pack of cigs? Don’t do it! There is another way. eSmokies are the safe, healthier alternative to traditional smoking, and could be the answer to your nicotine needs. Electronic cigarettes offer the much needed satisfaction of tobacco without the harmful health side effects associated with smoking. The cigarette works by using vapour rather than smoke and tar, and a fully charged eSmokie will give you around 300 puffs.

As you probably know, going cold turkey on the smoking front is difficult, nigh impossible, but with eSmokies you can gradually decrease your nicotine intake, by using different potency levels, and finally come down to a ‘no nicotine’ level. This provides an easier way of quitting smoking, with very little effort on your side. Starter kits are priced from as little as £34.99 and include everything you need to begin: pre filled cartridges, the electronic cigarette, a USB charger and a wall charger. For those of you who are fashion conscious, eSmokies have launched a style range which offers a sleek black style eSmokie. Take a look on their website for more information.

Oz The Great and Powerful

RECOMMENDS

Director: Sam Raimi

....................................................................

In Sam Raimi’s modern ‘prequel’ to The Wizard of Oz, the title character begins as a simple circus magician and con-man. When he is swept away to the Land of Oz, he meets the three witches: Theodora, Evanora and Glinda. How these witches help to influence his selfish nature provides the backbone of this film, ending in a spectacular finale. I got through the door because of the visual beauty of this film; Raimi and Peter Deming (the cinematographer) really have done a fantastic job rendering the land of Oz - but even better than this is the wizard’s journey as a character. When he arrives in Oz and meets Theodora, he pretends to be the promised wizard because of the treasure he is shown. However (spoiler alert), when he is found out by Theodora and she becomes Page 66

the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda, the good witch, convinces him to use his talents as a con-man to trick the people of Oz – along with Theodora and Evanora – into believing the power of the wizard is real, giving the people hope and making the wicked witches fear him.

A British crime thriller, starring James McAvoy and Mark Strong as a dedicated police detective and his criminal nemesis, who he’s been after for years. When they find each other again, they are forced together to combat something that is way out of their hands. Mix with guns, action, death and a political conspiracy, and you’ve got a great picture, right? Wrong; so wrong. What could have been a good narrative is let down

by awful pacing, and dialogue that barely drags itself through until its nonsensical ending. This not helped by the fact that most of the characters’ accents are clearly fake, most obviously James McAvoy’s, and it’s hard to separate bad dialogue from bad accents. This film does have tiny moments of redemption however, and some of the shots are composed quite well, shown when McAvoy and Strong are present during the interrogation of an old woman.

Side Effects

Director: Steven Soderbergh

..................................................................................................................................................................

Side Effects is a psychological thriller starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum, as Emily and Martin, a couple separated by his jail sentence. On his release, she begins to exhibit strange symptoms of mental illness, and Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) is assigned as her therapist. After several attempts with various different medications, he turns to a new drug, Ablixa, the titular effects of which cause problems not only for Emily and her family, but also for John and his career. While the narrative pacing feels a

little bit off at first, with some things seemingly happening out of nowhere, it is important to remember these events in relation to later ones and how they affect the ending. I also enjoyed the perspective shift from Emily to John about half-way through the film, which allows his character to shine in his investigative capacity. Without giving too much away, this is definitely when the story picks up, when Law and Mara prove they are worthy of so much praise for their performances, especially as the story builds to its thoroughly satisfying ending.

beats Kate Nash – Girl Talk

Justin Timberlake – The 20/20 Experience

Amy Winehouse – At the BBC

There was a time when the question, “Do you like Kate Nash?” would inspire an apathetic groan and a rolling of the eyes, but the girl has changed and she’s gone all grunge. You read that right. It’s not only Kate Nash’s hair that’s changed (the gothic black locks with white panels are reminiscent of Cruella Deville); her music has had a complete makeover as well. After moving to LA, the one-time twee pianist formed a new band and brought out a new album inspired by kick ass girl acts such as Hole and The Distillers.

This is fantastic; Timberlake working hand in hand with the extremely talented Timberland. There is not an ounce of doubt as to why this record has been so successful so quickly. There seems to have been a prolonged silence since Justin’s musical hiatus in 2007, but the stunning star is back and we love it.

Since her tragic death in 2011, Amy Winehouse has been elevated to the status of an almost God-like icon. For a short period it was difficult to see past the premature end of her life and recall what a great musician and writer she really was. The CD and DVD box set, “At the BBC”, serves as a gentle reminder that Amy was more than just a member of the 27 Club; she was also an extremely talented songstress.

“Girl Talk” is a record with a thing or two to say; it seems the singer-songwriter found her niche and is speaking out. No longer is she singing about the mundane every day, but actual issues such as feminism and insomnia. The best tracks include “Rap for Rejection”, which fuses the girl-rap tones of Uffie with lyrics such as, ‘You’re try’na tell me sexism doesn’t exist? If it doesn’t exist, then what the f**k is this?’, and “Lullaby for an Insomniac” - a haunting acapella ballad about the trials of being sleepless night after night. But the best track has to be, “I’m a Feminist, You’re Still a Wh*re”. Enough said, Kate. Page 70

The debut single from the album entitled, “Mirrors”, has already spent a matter of weeks at Number One, and you can see why. The catchy beat and addictive lyrics have had us all with the lines, ‘’Cause it’s like you’re my mirror (oh oh)’, running through our heads all day every day since it was released. The best part of all this? That isn’t even the best song on the album; the tracks just keep getting better and better. “Let the Groove In” is one of the stand out tracks, with its ridiculously catchy lyrics and salsa style rhythm, whilst “Suit and Tie” is a throwback to the FutureSex/ LoveSounds album and has plenty of the same style and tone that we know and love. This is already one of the biggest albums of the year and it’s only April.

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

The box set comes in two parts; half an album which consists of some of the most haunting live tracks to have been released so far and half DVD documentary which takes a look at some of the most intimate moments in the young stars life and the entirety of her 2007 concert at Porchester Hall in London where she sings some of her best loved ballads, such as the stunning “Me and Mr Jones” and “Some Unholy War”. Some might say that this is all a bit too much so soon after her death, but isn’t it great to hear that soulful voice just one more time?

SHEFFIELD ALL STARS Amber Topaz Burlesque We at The Student Magazine love to see something a little different hit the Steel City, and this month we have a corker for you! Amber Topaz is a truly talented Burlesque artist, who performs to sell-out crowds around the world. We got the chance witness one of these performances, and needless to say, we were stunned! We managed to sit Amber Topaz down for a chat afterwards and this is what she had to say.

How long have you been in the Performing Arts Industry?

this case (the performance we witnessed), my character is a drunken strumpet.

What is your all-time favourite performer quote?

I’ve been in the performing arts industry 20 years or so professionally.

What does “Burlesque” mean to you?

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap” - Dolly Parton.

What made you decide to do burlesque?

To me burlesque is tongue in cheek, provocative, frivolous entertainment.

I did it for a bit of a laugh, but it soon turned into a career, as I was inundated with bookings and I was having such limitless fun. I realised I could truly express my creativity and use all my performance skills, without having to wait for the right theatre role to turn up. Burlesque made me the master of my own destiny.

Who or what are your inspirations?

Can you describe your style and tell our readers what makes you different from other acts?

Where do you get your ideas from for your act? I have a fruitful imagination. Mostly, I am inspired by a piece of music which dictates the way I move, and leads an act, or there is a costume I really want to wear, for example in the 18th Century style. I make the costumes and design the act around it. In

Music that makes my soul sing and or a song I love to sing inspires me. My intention is to cheer up an audience. Visually, musicals, films and vintage Hollywood movies inspire me. If the audience walk away smiling or laughing, that is a privilege, and it inspires me endlessly to attempt it, again and again, in new and innovative ways.

What advice can you give students who want to pursue a Burlesque career? Hone a skill. Whether it is dance, song, comedy, circus or an instrument.

It’s high energy, all singing, all dancing, comedy glamour puss. It’s hard to know what sets you apart. For a long time, I was one of the only UK burlesque acts that sang, danced and was funny. I suppose from the endless feedback I get from people who have seen a lot of burlesque, it’s that I am authentic. I live and breathe my performances, heart and soul. People really get that I am having a ball, which makes them relax and enjoy it even more. Anyone who knows me well always laughs and says ‘That’s just you being you’. How lucky am I that I get to perform around the world and have a wonderful career just being myself!

hope works Hope Works

Unit 1A Hopeworks Sheffield, S4 7YQ 07956 913 713 f / HopeWorks www.mixedinsheffield.co.uk Ever since Hope Works, Sheffield’s unique Art Industry Hub, has come into being, it has delighted and entranced us with its underground beats and premier acts. Since it began, Hope Works has revolutionised the Sheffield music scene, bringing the freshest underground acts to the ears of eager listeners and making sure that no matter how tired, the party never stops! With its own branded night, Hope Works Presents, reaching national exposure (it got the High Five in the March issue of DJ Magazine for its Blawan & Pangaea event), Hope Works and Mixed In Sheffield have massively raised their profile. Hope Works is becoming a stalwart on the Sheffield clubbing scene, but importantly, it is now a nationally recognised brand with partnerships developing outside Sheffield, with The Warehouse Project and Parklife festival just some of the new developments. Now, Hope Works is going to step things up to the next level with a triple celebration: the ‘100 Years’ record label launch party and Mixed In Sheffield’s 4th birthday party, plus a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the invention of stainless steel. The party, which is on the 20th April, features UK Dons, Boddika and Trevino, as well as many of Sheffield’s finest electronic artists. 100 Years is a

new Techno label run by Liam O Shea. The first release, Lo Shea’s “Steel City”, is two pieces of music generated from sound recordings made in the legendary Forgemasters steel factory in Sheffield. The internationally acclaimed Designers Republic design agency are art directing the label too, and they were also the design company who came up with the original Warp Record purple sleeves. It’s a very Sheffield project. Being classed as an Art Industry Hub, Hope Works is a gallery, workshop space, space for film set hire and a warehouse event space – a unique feature in Sheffield which is set for massive things. Hope Works is designed to be a new hub of Sheffield industry. This time, rather than simply the manufacturing industry, it represents the new face of Sheffield in 2013 and looking forward; the creative industries, music, art, design and build of products that will reach around the globe. Just like Sheffield’s biggest export to date, stainless steel, invented, here in Sheffield, 100 years ago by a Sheffield man Harry Brearley. Here’s to another 100 years!

(Oz the Great and Powerful)

RECOMMENDS

(Sam Raimi)

(Justin Timberlake) – The 20/20 Experience

(Amy Winehouse) – At the BBC

专辑中比较成功歌曲有《Rap for Rejection》,这首歌充满了女 说唱歌手的风格,比如说“You’re try’na tell me sexism doesn’t exist? If it doesn’t exist, then what the f**k is this?”。 不过这张专辑里最成功的当属 《“I’m a Feminist, You’re Still a Wh*re》。

自从这首歌出来之后,“Cause it’s like you’re my mirror (oh oh)”这 句歌词就一直在我们的脑海里萦 绕。

在这场演 唱会上她演唱了那些深受大家 喜爱的歌曲比如《Me and Mr Jones》和《Some Unholy War》。

(“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap” )——多莉·帕顿(Dolly Parton)

(Frog and Parrot) 94 Division Street Sheffield, S1 4GF 0114 272 1280

音乐是The Frog and Parrot的 灵魂。 是的,那个酒吧就是The Frog and Parrot。 The Violet May、Alvarez Kings、Sarah Mac、Wet Nuns、Ruby Kid以及 The Blackbirds都曾经在这里,在 The Frog and Parrot大展过他们 的身手。

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

The Common Room

1st Floor (above Forum Shops), 127129 Devonshire Street, Sheffield, S3 7SB 0114 280 8221 www.common-room.co.uk ............................................................................

Cubana Tapa

34 Trippet Lane, Sheffield, S1 4EL 0114 276 0475 www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk ............................................................................

Page 28

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

By Tom Hardy Published April
