Master’s student heads to Arctic on research cruise.

Search for new provost/vice president continues Elizabeth Lee Printz Reporter

The University of Southern Mississippi continues to search for the new Provost and Vice President of Student Affairs.

According to the Hattiesburg American, Steven Moser stepped up as interim provost by the request of Southern Miss President Rodney Bennett. Moser, professor of music and dean of the College of Arts and Letters, replaced Denis Wiesenburg, who previously held the position since November 2011.

Moser said he will not be pursuing the permanent position.

Back in April, Bennett discussed Wiesenburg’s resignation in an email he sent to the USM student body.

“I have accepted Dr. Wiesenburg’s resignation and thank him for his service not only to academic affairs, but also to the university as a whole,” Bennett said. “I wish him well as he continues to contribute to our university community.”

The university assembled a 28-member screening committee consisting of Southern Miss faculty and alumni to handle various aspects of the hiring process and advise Bennett’s final decision.

Additionally, the university employed the aid of Atlanta-based search firm Parker Executive Search, which specializes in hiring senior-level executive officers for clients in areas such as higher education.

Sabine Heinhorst, chair of the screening committee, said the search is progressing on schedule, and a list of applicants have been compiled.

“The pool size is healthy, and the search committee is looking forward to identifying a short list of candidates to invite for interviews,” said Heinhorst, who is also professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “The committee is looking for a Provost who will be an effective academic leader for our university and will interact effectively with all constituencies inside and outside of Southern Miss.”

The university will make a final decision in late October or early November. The new provost will start Jan. 1, 2016.

Printz Reporter Just a month after being crowned Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts is preparing for the televised Miss America Pageant to be held Sept.

13 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Roberts will represent Mississippi as the 59th pageant winner in the national contest. If she wins next month, she will be the fifth Miss Mississippi to be crowned Miss America.

Roberts is a recent graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi with an undergraduate degree in chemistry. She is also a Kappa Delta sorority alumni, Goldwater Scholar, skilled violinist and philanthropist. She has been accepted into medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

She hopes to pursue a career as a pediatric reconstructive plastic surgeon.

Roberts has, however, deferred a year at UMMC as required by the Miss Mississippi contract. She was crowned Miss University of Southern Mississippi in 2013 and again in 2015.

Current Miss University of Southern Mississippi and medical student Kristen Dupard agreed that maintaining excellence in different areas is challenging.

“The biggest task is keeping the end game in mind by being committed to here and now,” Dupard said. “People oftentimes get tunnel vision, but it’s important to think about the big picture. Being able to balance things in college equips us for the future. Especially as women in the science field, people like Hannah and I may not have broken the glass ceiling for women, but we have put cracks in it. We’re shaping the future for women alike.”

Having concluded her undergraduate career at USM, Roberts continues to work her way up in the pageant and science worlds.

“My time at USM gave me memories that I will always treasure,” Roberts said.

and the experiences I had, The University of Southern Mississippi was the perfect place for me to begin the journey I’m on now.”

Roberts views her accomplishments as an advancement in society but is not surprised that other Miss America contestants are accomplished in two or more areas.

“I feel that this shows how far society has come in accepting women over the last 100 years,” Roberts said. “This year marks the 95th anniversary of Miss America, and the pageant has evolved since its beginning.

Women that compete are intelligent, talented and driven; many of them plan to go to graduate or professional school.”

Roberts is working toward her next competition. Her preparation efforts for the Miss America competition include mock interviews, talent rehearsals, fitness training and even walking practices. Roberts said that The Miss Mississippi Board of Directors is her support system along with family and friends who have helped along the way.

Winning the state pageant has given Roberts the opportunity to expose her ambitions and

accomplishments nationwide.

She runs a charity called Pages of Love, by which she has donated more than 25,000 books to schools, hospitals and homeless shelters. Hannah Roberts is garnering Miss America pageant votes via word of mouth, social media and different events.

The Miss Mississippi SendOff Celebration is set for Aug. 22 at noon at the Vicksburg City Auditorium, where Roberts will showcase different gowns she will wear in the Miss America pageant. Tickets are $25 and include lunch and a fashion show.

Welcome back to campus! Football season is almost here, and we cannot wait to see a packed student section for our first game of the season against Mississippi State on Saturday, Sept. 5.

This Friday, Aug. 21, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. will be your opportunity to pick up your student ticket for the Southern Miss Football home opener against Mississippi State. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis with a limit of one ticket per student. The tickets will be available to pick up at the M.M. Roberts Stadium Ticket Office located near Gate 3 of the stadium and directly across from the R.C. Cook Union. The Student Eagle Club will also be setup during this time to distribute membership t-shirts and sign new members up for the 2015-16 academic year.

Students will be required to show their student ID while claiming their tickets for the Southern Miss vs. Mississippi State game. The Southern Miss Ticket Office will also be able to validate Student IDs during this time. As a reminder, students receive Free Admission to all home athletic events as long as they have a validated ID. Students at the Gulf Park Campus will be able to pick up their tickets during Welcome Week on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Plaza Party from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Gulf Park Campus students are also welcome to attend the pick-up date at the Hattiesburg Campus if they choose to.

On the day of the game, please note that all students will need to show both their ticket as well as their student ID to gain admission to the student section.

USM grad student heads to Arctic waters Alan Rawls

University of Southern Mississippi graduate student Laura Whitmore set sail for a research cruise to the North Pole Aug. 9 aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter “Healy.”

The second-year Department of Marine Science master’s student began her 65-day voyage at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and will focus her research on the study of dissolved methane distribution and transport in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean.

Methane is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, and it is therefore very relevant to the discussion on global climate change.

“The Arctic Ocean is extremely sensitive to warming,” Whitmore said. “Most people think of the Arctic ice cap melting and habitat loss for polar sea life. However, there is another very interesting aspect to consider. The Arctic sediments are host to a very large reservoir of stored methane. While it is stored, it is not a threat to warming, but as seawater warms there is a chance that the stored methane can be released to the

seawater and subsequently the atmosphere, where it can cause more exacerbated warming.”

Whitmore hopes that her extensive research will help discover the current distribution of methane in seawater and how much of that methane is released into the atmosphere.

“Understanding these facets of methane distribution in the Arctic will set a baseline for future studies and enable a better estimate of the current impact methane from Arctic sediments has on climate,” she said.

Whitmore will join 49 other researchers, representing 30 institutions from across the world, for the U.S. Arctic GEOTRACES Expedition, whose mission is to study marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes.

“I always wanted to do something like this, but never expected to experience the reality of going to the North Pole,” Whitmore said.

“I’ve never had an overnight trip on a boat before. I’ll have a very steep learning curve for how to live on a boat, especially in a region notorious for rough seas.”

The Palmer, Alaska native earned her undergraduate degree

in environmental sciences from Montana State University in 2013, after which she moved to Mississippi to work with esteemed oceanographers and join the Department of Marine Science master’s program, with an emphasis in chemistry.

She has spent the past year working in the lab of Alan Shiller, a professor in the Department of Marine Science. Shiller selected Whitmore as his lab’s representative on this GEOTRACES cruise.

“Laura is not only book-smart, (but) she’s also got a lot of common sense and is quite proactive with a can-do attitude,” Shiller said. “She’s the sort of student you can give a task to and then stand out of the way while she accomplishes it.”

The “Healy” is a 420-foot Coast Guard Cutter designed to break 4.5 feet of ice continuously at 3 knots (3.5 mph), and the vessel can operate in temperatures as low as −50 °F. The icebreaker has a maximum speed of 17 knots (20 mph).

To avoid the possibility of cabin fever, Whitmore plans to bring some important items along for the trip.

University dubs HPR ‘School of Kinesiology’ Andrew Dutton Printz Reporter

The University of Southern Mississippi changed the name of the School of Human Performance and Recreation to give it a better appeal and to reach larger target audiences.

The school is now known as the School of Kinesiology.

Scott Piland, director and professor of the School of Kinesiology, said the major drive behind the name change is an effort to better reach prospective students online — a means for the school to appear on search engines.

“In order for us to be current and for us to be recognizable, (we needed) to make the name change,” Piland said.

According to the American Kinesiology Association, kinesiology is defined as the academic discipline that involves the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society and quality of life.

Hanna Knowles, marketing communicator for the School of Kinesiology, spoke about the kinesiology program’s opportunities.

“The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree offers three emphasis areas,” Knowles said. “These include exercise science, kinesiotherapy and physical education.”

The School of Kinesiology also offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Undergraduate majors include athletic training, exercise

science, kinesiotherapy, physical education, therapeutic recreation and sport coaching education. Master’s degrees are offered in exercise science, physical education and sport coaching education. The Ph.D in Kinesiology offers emphasis areas in sport pedagogy, biomechanics and exercise physiology. “(Students) will understand the human body through the perspective of movement and physical activity,” Piland said.

“This knowledge will range from basic body structures to the overall social, emotional and physical benefits of positive physical activities.”

Nancy Speed, assistant director and physical education instructor at the School of Kinesiology, discussed what students might learn.

“What you learn about kinesiology depends upon the degree, which is why we have a core set of classes where you learn the bones and the muscles, bone mechanical principles and learn how the body responds to exercise,” Speed said.

“For instance, physical education would be about teaching you in coaching education about sport performance and how to improve people who have chosen to be athletes,” she said. “In exercise science you have a lot more of those principles that are applied specifically to exercise and how your body reacts.”

The School of Kinesiology faculty pursue a variety of

research agendas from projects involving health interventions to mitigating concussions. “These research efforts facilitate new knowledge across all of our disciplines and they provide valuable experiences for our students at each level of degree programming,” Piland said.

Piland affirmed that the School of Kinesiology, in collaboration with colleagues from the School of Polymer Science, has secured a $4.9 million grant with the U.S. Army to develop a pneumatic cushioning system for the advanced combat helmet.

“We have a brand new lab that we are installing right now that is looking at impact mechanics to the head, brain and the neck,” Piland said. The tests will be applied to both combat helmets and eventually to sports helmets. “It’s endeavors such as these that serve to set us up apart from other programs in the region and lead directly to overall long-term success of our students.”

Piland discusses his obligation to helping students succeed in the program. “We have a dedicated center to do things like advise and offer tutoring for all of our classes.

In fact, we have a specific office dedicated to tutoring and that’s our (Academic Skills in Kinesiology) Center.”

“Every orientation, I tell students to invest in themselves academically by making good grades and getting off to a good start in college is very

important so they have the GPA to succeed in our programs,” Speed said.

The ASK center is located in the student success center and is equipped with technology such as iPads, surface pros, apps and software that will allow for immediate engagement with students.

“This school is founded on

a long history of passionate efforts to better serve our great state. Rebranding to the name ‘Kinesiology’ allows us to continue to build upon our past success creating a bright and innovative future,” said Piland.

The School of Kinesiology at USM remains the only kinesiology school in Mississippi.

Assessing an imperfect P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran

Associate Professor of International Development University of Southern Mississippi Written August 7 Last month, the P5+1 (United Nations Security Council Permanent Five Members China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States plus Germany) completed a final agreement with Iran (regarding) the future of Tehran’s nuclear developmental program. That agreement is an

imperfect one likely to impede Iran’s potential pathways to the construction of nuclear weapons over the next 15 years but is by no means certain to preclude that outcome within that period, let alone forever.

The agreement’s imperfections fall within three principal issue areas: first, the extent and duration of the inspections regime to be administered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); second, the extent, types and timing of

sanctions relief; and third, the insertion of conventional arms and ballistic missile embargo relief.

Central to IAEA inspections regime specified in the P5+1 deal are three related provisions. First, inspectors can request access to any of Iran’s nuclear sites, most notably the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, heavy water plutonium reactor at Arak, research and development laboratory at Fordow and military complex at Parchin. Second, Iran has 24 hours to accept a request or take up to 14 additional days to propose alternative means to address IAEA concerns. Third, absent IAEA satisfaction, the P5+1 and Iran have 10 more days to resolve the access request, amounting to 24 days overall.

That byzantine process is problematic for two reasons.

First, the conditions for IAEA access are considerably more restrictive than the “anytime, anyplace” objective the United States specified when the first P5+1 interim agreement was struck in November 2014.

Second, the temptation for Iran to violate the agreement will grow significantly over time and in direct proportion to the economic, geopolitical and strategic benefits China and Russia have secured (or are expecting to secure) from closer ties to Tehran.

After compliance with the baseline limits of enriched uranium stockpiles and centrifuges allowed for uranium enrichment at Natanz and neutralization of the Arak reactor set by the agreement, U.S., U.N. and European

Union economic and financial sanctions on Iran end, with Tehran permitted to restart global petroleum sales from its ample supply. In addition, $100 billion in frozen regime assets will be released, a substantial injection for an Iranian economy that managed just $231 billion in output in 2014. Even if Iran fails to comply, it has 30 days to answer IAEA allegations of any violations, at which point the matter would be referred to the UN Security Council, with a veto by any P5 member triggering a “snap back” of sanctions.

For the United States and its allies, there are two especially troublesome aspects of such sanctions relief. First, one must question the extent of Iranian assets unfrozen, given that in some cases, those monies are associated with sanctions on individuals linked both to Tehran’s nuclear developmental program and its sponsorship of terrorist organizations, such as the Lebanese and Palestinian terrorist groups Hezbollah and Hamas. Second, there is a decreasing likelihood that all P5+1 members will be as intent as Washington on “snapping back” sanctions if Iran violates the agreement.

Beyond those two sets of issues, Iran was permitted to insert two provisions into the agreement not directly related to the nuclear developmental issues involved. The first ends the existing UN embargo on Iranian conventional arms purchases and sales five years after the proverbial 15-year clock for the P5+1 pact begins ticking. The second removes the existing UN embargo on ballistic missile component and

technology purchases after eight years, while allowing ballistic missile developmental research to continue during that period.

Washington’s acceptance of these significant concessions to Iran was costly for two reasons. First, after agreeing not to raise Iran’s sponsorship of terrorist organizations and fate of American hostages currently held by Tehran in the negotiations, the United States foolishly permitted its Iranian adversary to put the embargoes on the table.

Second, allowing Iran to deal in conventional arms and further enhance its ballistic missile capabilities is imprudent, if not reckless. Removing the latter ban in particular could lead to ballistic missile capabilities that eventually threaten the continental United States.

Given the concessions granted to Iran in each of the aforementioned three issue areas, it is clear that the P5+1 deal with Tehran over the future of Iran is an imperfect one, both for the United States and its allies, especially for those among the latter situated in the heart of the Middle East, most notably Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, President Barack H. Obama’s argument that the agreement is better than alternatives—most notably maintaining or strengthening existing sanctions on Iran or military action targeting that state’s nuclear sites—has some merit. Consequently, at least in the short term, the deal, though certainly not the “slam dunk” Obama suggests, is better than any alternatives over the next 10-15 years.

‘Mission: Impossible’ proves spy flicks are here to stay Jesse Hammett Copy Editor

Guess the movie: with the help of his hacker sidekick, a handsome spy must use a variety of high-tech gadgets to infiltrate a heavily guarded enemy base. On the way, he encounters a femme fatale, a double cross, a triple cross, a car chase and a deluge of other things with which fans of the beloved spy subgenre may be familiar.

Chances are you guessed a different movie than the next person but still got it right. The plot I’ve described may very well be the most recycled spy narrative in film. In this case, though, the movie in question is “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.” But don’t worry, as this film’s familiarity is a part of its strength. It would be incredibly cynical to blame a spy movie for being a spy movie and mean it.

“Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie, made its North American debut on July 31, 2015. Starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg and others, the film broke $55 million at the box office during its first weekend and has since grossed roughly $310 million. It currently holds a 93 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The story’s bare frame is unsurprising: Ethan Hunt, an operative of the Impossible Missions Force, has failed to prove to the CIA the existence of an Illuminatiesque organization called the Syndicate.

Hunt becomes wanted, the CIA disbands the

Impossible Missions Force and well-anticipated shenanigans ensue, including the heist bit I mentioned above.

Story, of course, is arguably among the weaker elements of action films. The story’s purpose is most often to be a vehicle by which the action may be reached. “Rogue Nation” is keenly aware of this, as it is aware of itself. The film knows what its audience wants, and it thus avoids, very intentionally, weighing itself down with bulky movie mythos that pretends to have any semblance of depth (e.g. Alan Taylor’s heavily panned “Terminator Genisys”).

The result is an emphasis on what makes movies in the spy genre special: the gadgets, the visuals, the espionage and the action sequences that have a tendency to defy gravity. It handled its story the way an action movie should.

However, the writing in particular is never in such a film’s foreground, but that doesn’t mean that it should be so strongly ham-fisted that the viewer is finishing a character’s every sentence. That’s what I found myself doing after I ran out of popcorn, but I didn’t mind too terribly because I knew that Ethan Hunt would soon be having a fist fight somewhere that was precariously high off the ground.

Which brings me to what might be my biggest problem with the film: that while Tom Cruise meets his full potential as an action star here, we see little to nothing of what actors like Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin and even Jeremy Renner might offer. Pegg, particularly known

for his comedic ability, got a few

chuckles out of the audience, and that was the extent of his on-screen prowess. I don’t expect a “Mission: Impossible” installment to be funny, mind you, but it felt strange to see allstar actors portray characters who are frustratingly bland. Take this nitpick with a grain of salt, because I can’t seem to judge whether it’s a valid one or not.

These gripes are minor. Even after the impactful sum of its smaller shortcomings, “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” is a fantastic film that deserves to be seen. Tom Cruise, who hasn’t aged since he was 30 for some reason, still makes for a remarkable action hero.

Waves of energy accompany every stunt and every moment of danger. As mentioned, the story and dialogue are there to coherently drive the movie to its bursting points.

Said points burst loudly and spectacularly. The film is

a playground for adrenaline enthusiasts and those with a taste for kitschy spy tech.

While the story begins with an entertainingly explosive—yet sadly short—scene of Ethan Hunt clamoring on the outside of a flying plane, what follows is a narrative that boils and rises until Hunt must fight, shoot and otherwise stunt his way in and out of situations.

Spy narratives have survived for a reason, and films like “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” are that reason. One may come to believe that the series, or even genre for that matter, has long been well on its way to burning out. But Ethan Hunt’s latest adventure is perhaps proof of just the opposite. True, there isn’t a lot in this movie we haven’t seen, but the genre will evolve as long as technology and ideas do. Try to see this movie while it’s still in theaters.

The Buckeyes were 5-0 against Top25 teams this past season, losing only to Virginia Tech. The only loss I see for this team will be the last game of the season against the Jim Harbaugh-led Michigan Wolverines, but they will likely still receive a spot in the playoff.

Jacob Kemp It’s hard to deny the defending champs a spot in the College Football Playoff when they return not just one quarterback, but three. With Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett, the Buckeyes have more than enough ammunition to take on a weakened BIG 10. However, the suspension of Joey Bosa could cause a hiccup early against an always-tough Virginia Tech squad. There is the looming threat of the resurgent Michigan program led by Jim Harbaugh, but the Buckeyes should make it through unscathed.

Ashley Hickman Ohio State will be a likely contender to win another title. They have incredible depth on their roster and have two great options at quarterback between J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones. The test for this team will be how they respond to the pressure of a team with a target on their back.

Joshua Campbell, sports editor The Buckeyes will trip up and lose to Michigan State at home this season, but will avenge their loss in the BIG 10 title game. Look for Barrett to retain his job as the starting quarterback and Ezekiel Elliott to run wild en route to winning the Heisman trophy. Their defense is completely stacked and will have several players selected in the first few rounds of the NFL Draft, beginning with Bosa.

Auburn

TCU

Ashley Hickman Auburn has a record of 16-0 under Malzahn when it allows less than 34 points in a game.

The Tigers brought in Muschamp to run the defense and help keep this statistic true. Plus, with 6’5’’-quarterback Jeremy Johnson in the mix on offense, tossing to stud receiver D’haquille Williams, the Tigers should easily make the playoffs.

Boykin will return with most of his offensive weapons still in place, led by Josh Doctson, who scored 11 touchdowns last season.

TCU’s schedule will also help with games against Oklahoma and Baylor being the only true tests.

Joshua Campbell, sports editor What Malzahn has accomplished since returning as the head coach has been nothing short of remarkable. He inherited a 3-9 team and brought them within mere seconds of being National Champions in his first season at the helm. This will be the first time in a while a Malzahn-coached team will be led by a true pocket passer, but do not let Johnson’s rocket for an arm fool you; he can run as well. The Tigers will be a force in the SEC and roll right into the playoff.

Joshua Campbell, sports editor TCU made a strong case to be the final representative in the College Football Playoff last season, but was edged out by eventual National Champion Ohio State. Had the Horned Frogs not blown a 21-point 4th quarter lead against Baylor on the road last season, they could have easily been starting this season as the reigning champs. With their matchup against Baylor at home this season, look for TCU to run the table and be the top seed in the playoff.

Texas A&M

USC

Jacob Kemp In the opening game for the Tigers last season, quarterback Nick Marshall was suspended for the first half. But Jeremy Johnson would go on to complete 12-of-16 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns in just the first half.

The hiring of former Florida Gator head coach Will Muschamp as the defensive coordinator may have been the hiring that could bring Gus Malzahn a championship.

Julius Kizzee Head coach Kevin Sumlin has never had a top-notch defense, giving up just under 30 points this past year, but adding John Chavis as the new defensive coordinator should help out drastically. The offense will return three of four of their leading receivers from 2014, giving quarterback Kyle Allen a ton of weapons at his disposal. They could lose to either Ole Miss in week 8 or LSU in the last week of the season, but a one-loss team from the SEC West should make it in.

UCLA

Joshua Campbell, sports editor The Bruins are my dark horse candidate to represent the PAC 12 this season. They are being overlooked after losing quarterback Brett Hundley to the NFL, but true freshman Josh Rosen is as good as it gets. He may be young, but he has a huge arm, quick feet and is very cerebral. UCLA has a ton of talent surrounding him, led by do-it-all stud Myles Jack. Jack can run the ball, rush the passer, make tackles behind the line of scrimmage and play in coverage. Jack has a chance to be one of the most versatile talents college football has ever seen.

Jacob Kemp The Horned Frogs return one of the nation’s top quarterbacks and Heisman-hopefuls in Trevone Boykin. Also, Gary Patterson has been one of the nation’s most underrated head coaches and an even deadlier defensive mind with his unique 4-2-5 defense. All of that combined with a soft schedule and without an extra conference championship game, the way is paved for TCU.

Jacob Kemp Usually picking the Trojans as one of the teams to finish in the top five is a death sentence, but not this year. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has the Trojans on the right track by focusing back on the defensive side of the ball; much like Pete Carroll did when he was at USC winning championships. Look for the Trojans to make some major noise in the PAC 12, especially with a rebuilding Oregon after losing Marcus Mariota.

Alabama

Julius Kizzee The Crimson Tide will be looking for another shot at the National Championship this year, with head coach Nick Saban having to replace a ton of talent once again. Even though Alabama always has an influx of NFL-caliber talent being piped through the ranks, it is always a challenge to replace past production for any program.

The Crimson Tide will have a their hands full this year with tilts against Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas and other college powerhouses. It will be up to Saban to keep his players focused on the task and make sure that they come to play week in and week out. The Iron Bowl against Auburn will likely decide their fate in regards to making the playoff.

Ashley Hickman Alabama always has one of the best recruiting classes in the nation and this team is loaded with blue-chip prospects once again. The Tide must first replace Blake Sims at quarterback. Getting steadiness at that position again is vital to their success. As long as the Tide can replace their quarterback and get back to running the ball in any situation, they will make the playoffs once again.

Baylor

Julius Kizzee The X-factor for the Bears is their in-state foe TCU. If TCU can pull off the win at home against Baylor, this will be a different conversation. Barring a miracle in Fort Worth, Baylor will be walking into the title game unscathed. The Nov. 27 tilt between the two teams will be the catalyst on who will represent the Big 12 in the Football Playoff.

The day ‘Tyndall Town’ came crashing down Julius Kizzee Printz Reporter

Two years ago at Southern Miss, Donnie Tyndall had the utmost support from everyone on campus. No matter if people were wearing ‘Tyndall Town’ shirts or setting record attendance numbers, he was a Hattiesburg celebrity. Then, the stars came crashing down when the NCAA stepped in and conducted an investigation that still haunts USM to this day.

The NCAA handed down their Notice of Allegations, written to President Rodney Bennett on July 22. There was a total of seven violations; four of them were Level I. The charges included deletion of e-mails, breach of representations and warranties and impermissible financial aid, among others.

On April 22, 2014, Tyndall left the bright lights of Hattiesburg for the University of Tennessee, but he only lasted one season. Due to the NCAA’s investigation back in November, Tyndall was fired on March 27, just over two weeks after the season ended.

Through all of the controversy behind Donnie Tyndall, he has been a successful coach everywhere he’s been.

His first head coaching gig came at St. Catharine College in Kentucky where he led the Patriots to a 30-5 record in just his first season.

After St. Catharine, Tyndall made some coaching stops at LSU, Tennessee State, Idaho and Morehead State.

With his teams, he generally played a zone scheme, similar to the Louisville system. Whether it meant he had guards defend 94-feet or he ball pressured the three point line, he always had a knack for getting the best from his defense.

Shortly after the stint with Morehead State where he won the NABC coach of the year, Tyndall was hired as the 19th head coach in Southern Miss history.

In his first year, Tyndall guided the youngest team in the country to a 27-10 record, the most wins in a single season in school history. The next season, Tyndall led the Golden Eagles to a 29-7 record, finishing first in Conference USA and going to the NIT Quarterfinals.

He then jumped ship to coach the Volunteers and his team went 16-16 and 7-11 in the Southeastern Conference.

The season actually exceeded expectations, as the media selected Tennessee to finish 13th out of 14 teams in the SEC. This was Tyndall’s last stop in basketball, but he set his sights on other endeavors.

because he was the manager of the Heavenly Bodies tag team a wrestling team based out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

One of Tyndall’s biggest supporters through all of the drama has been his older daughter, Taylor Tyndall.

Tyndall attributes most of his successes to his daughter giving him advice. During his lone season at Tennessee, the investigation was being conducted here in Hattiesburg.

When the news broke that he was fired at Tennessee, his daughter was devastated.

“You just crumble,” Tyndall said. “Having her find out that way was sickening. Her mom told me she just collapsed bawling.”

His basketball-related activities now include consulting in Orlando for the NBA Summer League, where he worked with the Detroit Pistons.

“I am a grunt guy who just worked his way to the top,”

Tyndall said. “You have to get back on your feet and turn over every rock.”

Now Tyndall continues to search for his next stop. Whether it is a head coaching gig or as part of the media world, he will have a trail of crumbs behind him.

Those crumbs are still littered throughout the basketball program at USM as the program may have to vacate wins from Tyndall’s tenure as well as losing scholarships moving forward.

FOOTBALL

Newcomers already leaving their mark Joshua Campbell Sports Editor

As fall camp concludes, all eyes have been focused on the quarterback battle between incumbent starter Nick Mullens and transfer Tyler Matthews.

While all eyes have been focused on the two quarterbacks, all ears have been focused on head coach Todd Monken, trying to get an idea on which quarterback he will lean toward.

However, Monken has remained mum on the situation, but the quarterback battle is not the story of fall camp. The true story lies behind all the new faces that recently joined the team and will undoubtedly play a huge role in the upcoming season.

Defensive tackles Andrew Bolton, Quincy Russell and Ricky Parks join former Miami defensive end Naim Mustafaa to provide the Golden Eagles with the depth and talent they sorely needed.

Bolton spent two seasons with the Kansas Jayhawks before transferring to USM while Russell is a former four-star recruit who transferred from Oklahoma. Parks

originally was a highly sought after tight end, signing with Auburn out of high school, but was dismissed from the team twice.

He attended Coffeyville Junior College last season and made the transition to defensive tackle where his athleticism has made him a force as a pass rusher. All three have the pedigree and size to make a drastic impact on the interior of the defense.

Joining them on the defensive side of the ball are safety D’Nerius Antoine and linebacker Anthony Swain.

Antoine has spent time at linebacker, but is now working exclusively at safety with the first team. He has proven to be a physical presence in the run game at 231 pounds, but is also a great athlete who has the ability to play over the top in coverage.

Swain is a graduate transfer from Auburn and a traditional middle linebacker, but has his work cut out for him with Brian Anderson as the incumbent starter. However, Swain has opened eyes in the fall camp and will likely force defensive coordinator Dave Duggan’s hand in creating playing time for Swain.

On the offensive side, tight ends Taylor Marini and Julian Allen have brought an element to the passing game that has been missing from the Golden Eagle offense for years. Both players have the ability to play as a traditional inline tight end, but can also split out wide as a receiver.

Justice Hayes has brought even more competition to the running back position, which could pay huge dividends this season. The former Michigan Wolverine gives USM five solid options to tote the rock. Last season, the running back position was consistently banged up and hindered the Golden Eagles from being able to stick with their running game, leaving them one dimensional.

The Golden Eagle coaching staff has done a great job with pulling talented players from other programs and giving them chances to earn playing time.

Depth has been an issue with this team ever since Monken took over as head coach, but this is the first season when it looks like USM can actually sustain injuries without suffering a huge drop off in talent and production.
