Southern Miss announces new facility Andrew Abadie printz reporter

On Oct. 19, Athletics Director Jon Gilbert of The University of Southern Mississippi announced plans for a new multi-purpose Wellness Center.

“On behalf of the university, the Department of Athletics, and as a community member, I am proud and honored to announce this facility,” Gilbert said. “It is certain to be a point of pride, as it stands to serve our student-athletes, our student body and community constituents for years to come.”

The Wellness Center, the current name the facility will go by, is intended to be 26,000 to 28,000 square feet and is to be located along West Fourth Street by the Payne Center. The facility is planned to hold one thousand people and will be the new home for the Golden Eagles’ volleyball team. Planning to host community and student events, the center will have a weight room, volleyball court, training room, locker rooms and classrooms.

Currently, Reed Green Coliseum is home to the men and women’s basketball team, the volleyball team and hosts numerous study body events. The construction of the Wellness Center will ease the burden on the aging Reed Green facility.

The Wellness Center will be funded through private donations and by the Mississippi Community E d u c a t i o n C e n t e r.

The architectural firm of Wier Boerner Allin of Jackson was chosen to design the new facility.

Wier Boerner Allin designed Mississippi State’s new baseball stadium that is currently under construction and new softball stadium. The firm also designed Millsaps’ new softball and tennis facility, along with the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson and Ed’s Burgers in Hattiesburg.

However, once the funding is secured and cost of construction is finalized, the construction itself is projected to take 12 to 15 months.

Southern Miss stuns LA Tech in double-overtime win Trevor Ritchie printz reporter

Head Coach Jay Hopson and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles stunned the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs after trailing by double digits late in the fourth quarter, ultimately rallying for a 34-27 double-overtime win in Ruston, Louisiana.

Quarterback Kean Howard made his third straight start and in place of injured quarterback Kwadra Griggs.

After a quick first down on the opening play, the Southern Miss initial drive was halted. On the ensuing LA Tech drive, running back Boston Scott broke away for a 45-yard gain that set up a 23-yard field goal from kicker Jonathan Barnes. The Bulldogs obtained a three-point lead but weather temporarily spoiled the Rivalry in Dixie.

Lightning delays forced close to a 45-minute delay with 6:17 left to go in the first quarter. This was the fifth time in the last seven meetings that weather has impacted this matchup.

Southern Miss was then forced to settle for a field goal once the weather delay was lifted and after another drive was stopped short. With kicker Parker Shaunfield’s 45-yard field goal, the Golden Eagles ended the first quarter tied at three.

Scoring drives answered each other once again in the second quarter. LA Tech scored on a 15-yard run from

Scott and Southern Miss scored on running back Ito Smith’s 23-yard receiving touchdown. This was Smith’s sixth straight game with a touchdown. However, the Bulldogs did manage to find their way ahead; at the expense of Howard throwing a pick-six to the Bulldogs’ safety Darryl Lewis late in the first half. This allowed LA Tech to take a 17-10 lead into halftime.

Southern Miss, still unable to reach the end zone, settled for two straight field goals from Shaunfield in the third quarter. One from 34 yards out, the other from 26, cutting the deficit to just one point.

LA Tech answered in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard field goal of its own from Barnes. Southern Miss followed with a what seemed to be a likely scoring chance. After a 40yard gain from wide revier Korey Robertson that set the Golden Eagles inside of the opposing 5-yard line, Southern Miss fumbled on the goal line and allowed the Bulldogs to recover. LA Tech flipped the field with an 82-yard play and let quarterback J’Mar Smith finish the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. This gave LA Tech a 27-16 lead with 4:08 left to play.

Shaunfield nailed a 49-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter, his longest of the season. Southern Miss followed by attempting a gamedefining onside kick that linebacker Paxton Schrimsher recovered for

The initial overtime period collapsed as both Smith and Howard threw interceptions for their respective teams.

In double-overtime, Howard connected with Robertson for a 25-yard game eventual game winning touchdown.

The Nasty Bunch stood tall, sending the Bulldogs packing as they were unable to answer the call. With that, Southern Miss stunned LA Tech late – 34-27.

Robertson finished with nine receptions for 127 yards and two

touchdowns and Howard finished 32of-53 throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Southern Miss has now won ten of its last 13 meeting with the Bulldogs and holds a 16-8 all-time record against LA Tech in Ruston.

Next up the Golden Eagles face the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Saturday Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Peralta to speak at University Forum Oct. 24 Courtney Carver printz reporter

Rising from a poverty-filled childhood as an undocumented immigrant, Princeton University professor Dan-el Padilla Peralta will speak at the next University Forum about his experiences that are detailed in his book, “Undocumented: A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League,” on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bennett Auditorium. All University Forum events are free to the public.

“Peralta is today a professor of Classics at Princeton University; however, he had a rocky start in life,” University Forum Director Andrew Haley said.

According to. Peralta’s Princeton biography, he is “Dominican by birth and New Yorker by upbringing.”

When Peralta was four years old, his family arrived in the United States with a temporary tourist visa because his mother was having health complications. Their visas expired, and his father returned to the Dominican Republic. According to Haley, Peralta’s mother decided to remain in the United States taking on the homeless life with her sons because she knew they would have more opportunities in the United States as opposed to the Dominican Republic.

Living a double-life, Peralta had a continuous fear of being deported; however, he continued to excel throughout his schooling. According

to Peralta’s biography, he went on to graduate from Princeton, Oxford and Stanford. Once he arrived at Princeton, he had to come face-toface with the fact that he was an illegal immigrant, and he suffered many challenges- one being he was unable to apply for and receive financial aid.

Haley believes that if Peralta were to have gone through this situation when Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was in place, he could have received financial aid and other help to have a better life. Peralta is not yet an American citizen; however, he has been granted a work visa. He is

currently waiting for his green card application.

“According to his book, Peralta’s home is in New York City,” Haley said. “For him, that’s what he knows is home. He grew up like every other kid in America. It’s difficult for him to imagine himself as anything other than an American Citizen.”

Haley is looking forward to hearing Peralta as he describes the experiences and challenges he has faced throughout his life.

“I am particularly excited that Dan-el is coming because this book is a common read of many but not all classes for our incoming students,” Haley said.

Southern Miss Visits Congressman Steven Palazzo’s Yo u t h L e a d e r s h i p S u m m i t Southern Miss recruiters made an appearance at Congressman Steven Palazzo’s 6th Annual Youth Leadership Summit on Oct. 17 at Mississippi Gulf C o a s t C o m mu n i t y C o l l e g e.

Congressman Palazzo began the Youth Leadership Summit six years ago to encourage success and motivation in high school juniors and seniors after graduation.

At the event, multiple Mississippi universities and colleges set up tables showing the students what their university has to offer.

The event featured three local speakers with inspirational stories and accomplishments. The speakers included MDA Executive Director Glen McCullough, Founder of Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company Leslie Henderson and Assistant District Attorney for the 12th District of Mississippi Becky Denham.

McCullough is a former mayor of Tupelo, Mississippi, and a former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority. He and his employees help local businesses and leaders succeed.

Henderson and her husband Mark founded the Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company in 2004.

The company originally began brewing beer at home and experienced a number of road blocks along the way

Eaglepalooza returns, brings B.o.B to campus Hiba Tahir

managing editor After announcing its plan earlier this semester to bring Eaglepalooza back to Hattiesburg and The University of Southern M i s s i s s i p p i , U S M ’s S t u d e n t Government Association recently revealed American rapper B.o.B will headline this year’s event.

Recently appointed director o f E a g l e p a l o o z a 2 0 1 7 Ty Trehern said that selecting the artist was one of the biggest challenges his team faced this year.

“We knew that we wanted to make this year’s Eaglepalooza the biggest one yet because t h e H a t t i e s bu r g c o m mu n i t y and the Southern Miss student body [deserve] it,” Treher n said. “When we were presented with the option of hosting an artist like B.o.B, we wanted to do everything in our power to make it happen. After all, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to leave Southern Miss better than we found it. Because of the generosity of all parties involved, whether that was from donations, outside support, or working directly with the team, we believe we were able to do just that.”

Trehern’s announcement was met by thunderous applause at SGA’s “Bring It On: Eagle Style” homecoming event.

Brown said it is ironic that B.o.B is coming to a college campus when he holds such outlandish beliefs.

“He doesn’t believe that the earth is round, or that the moon landing happened,” Brown said.

“He’s currently mostly known for pretty unintelligent things.”

A student in the audience yelled

“f lat-earther” after Treher n’s a n n o u n c e m e n t . A Fa c e b o o k event titled “Bring Globes to Eaglepalooza to Prove to B.o.B the Earth is Round” sprang up just hours later. By Monday, Oct. 24, it had nearly 90 people attending and 175 people interested.

“Don’t let this event fall flat like B.o.B’s perception of the earth,” Drew Reagan, the organizer of the event, said.

Senior English major Madison Etheridge is one of many students who plan to bring a globe to Eaglepalooza.

“I’m super excited to see B.o.B at Eag le p alooz a,” Etherid ge said. “Not only because I dig his music and know so many of his songs, but also because flatearthers are almost extinct and I’d like to see one in person.”

Eaglepalooza, an annual free

concert for USM students and the greater Hattiesburg community, has drawn thousands of people to Hattiesburg every year since 2004. Headliners in the past have included a multitude of artists spanning every genre imaginable.

Some of the more notable past headliners include Echosmith, Local Natives, Keri Hilson, Girl Talk, Dashboard Confessional, Phillip Phillips and Melanie Fiona.

The SGA, which sponsors and organizes the event, canceled it last year amid budget concerns.

“It has a lot to do with the budget,” SGA president Cameron Cloud said in a March 2017 Student Printz article. “We have a budget we get presented at the beginning of the year and it predicts what we get for the year. The cut was so large that we didn’t have the $45,000 to run Eaglepalooza.”

According to a letter posted by the SGA last month, the association will be able to host the concert after all thanks to “the generosity of so many alumni, faculty, staff, community members and true Golden Eagles.”

“I am thrilled for the return of Eaglepalooza,” Cloud said in a statement. “This could not have happened without the great support of students, President Rodney D. Bennett, the USM Foundation, our alumni and the dedicated members of the Southern Miss and Hattiesburg communities.

It was a team effort, and I am humbled to be a part of it.”

The 14th annual Eaglepalooza will be held at 7 p.m. on Oc t. 27 in Sp irit Park on the Hattiesburg campus.

Humans of USM attracts on-campus followers Alyssa Bass

entertainment editor During a seemingly nor mal Monday afternoon on Oct.2, filled with scrolling through typical posts of the weekend’s activities, avid oncampus Instagrammers and Facebook users saw unusual, but strangely familiar content emerge on their feeds: Humans of USM. Ran by two senior Southern Miss students who wish to remain anonymous, the page’s goal is to share a mixture of quirky and heartwarming short stories told by USM’s diverse student body.

Both creators gained their inspiration from Brandon Stanton, the creator of widely-known and celebrated Humans of New York (HONY). Beginning in 2010, HONY began as a photography project with a goal of capturing 10 thousand colorful New Yorkers on the streets.

Now, seven years later, Stanton has not only managed to include glimpses of New Yorkers’ lives with his captions, but also has gained 25 million followers on Instagram and Facebook combined by following New Yorkers as well as citizens from over 20 different countries.

After receiving a Canon during the Christmas of her junior year, the creator of Humans of USM periodically thought about producing the page. Desiring to invest in a solo project that could be passed down to another student after she graduates in May of 2018, she finally made her idea a reality in the beginning of October.

While most of HONY’s followers may not know Stanton’s name, they can easily find it with a Google search, something that the creator of Humans of USM never wants for herself. And although she claims about seven people know she is the creator, she trusts that select few in keeping her secret.

Her reasoning for remaining anonymous is both selfless and logical.

She said, “The reason I choose to be anonymous is because this project isn’t about me. It’s about the people that are featured & their stories. I feel like being anonymous helps me focus on the bigger picture and allows me to fully pursue this project without there being any pressure on my choices and the decisions I make.”

But she is only one person. Taking a full-time load of college classes, living off-campus and working two jobs (one of which happens to be her own photography business) has proven to be challenging while attempting to reach more people for Humans of USM. Enlisting the help of a friend in hopes of covering more ground and “contributing to the diversity of who is featured on the page,” the creator recently added a second contributor onto the Humans of USM team.

Feeling inspired by Stanton’s work years ago, the contributor- like many of USM’s students says, she actually dreamt of putting Humans of USM into action first. However, like many of us who struggle to simply attend class, work, study, get enough sleep, call our mothers and remember to eat daily, “life got busy,” the contributor said, leaving the creator to create the pages herself.

Despite that, both the creator and the contributor are able to showcase a variety of USM voices, crediting their passion and belief in the project as their main sources of motivation.

Though both are working towards approaching strangers with as much ease as Stanton, the difference in the creator and the contributor have worked towards that goal at different paces. The creator said, “I’ve started out interviewing people I know or who I’m familiar with just until I make it a habit of approaching strangers and learning to be intentional.” Though the creator’s method may seem unfair at a glance, her method aids in reaching a diverse group, for this helps her in “highlighting those who may not be that well known around campus.”

One of the creator’s friends happens to be senior paralegal studies major Alexis Le who was surprised when Humans of USM asked to schedule an interview with her. Sharing the story of visiting her ill and now deceased grandmother in Vietnam this past July, Le was initially afraid of the reactions she would receive from others, wondering if her story was “TOO personal.”

Le quickly changed her mind and asked the page to tag the USM chapter of Delta Gamma and USM’s Vietnamese Student Association. “. . .I told myself, it’s okay to tell a

Courtesy Photo story like that because it may help others to become more open about situations that affected their life.

I had asked them to tag DG and VSA because I have been involved in those two organizations since I became a student at USM. Those two organizations have influenced me to be my best self and gave me a lot of courage. I probably wouldn’t be able to tell that story without the strength my organizations see in me.”

The contributor, on the other hand, thrives while inquiring about the stories of strangers. “I get the most enjoyment from asking strangers. It sounds intimidating, but it really isn’t.

Sometimes it’s more comforting to ask a stranger than a friend. I just look for something that we have in common to start the conversation. That could be me asking if I had them in a class or simply complimenting their outfit. I like to think that I have the confidence and social skills to talk to anyone about anything, so I ask open [ended] questions and the conversation flows from there.”

Like Humans of New York and all of the pages like it, Humans of USM features a variety of stories.

Perhaps the most notable thing about Humans of USM is that the page identifies its interviewees with their name, major and classification.

When asked why that is, the creator said, “I wanted there to be opportunities for people to connect by providing people with the names, majors, & classifications of people we interview. Kind of like a common ground point of view to see where people are in their college journey.”

And the plan to provide connections seems to have worked.

Underneath Le’s photo as well as underneath Jacob Harvell’s photo, their organizations (Delta Gamma and VSA for Le and the College of Business for Harvell) expressed words of encouragement and praise to their members in the comment sections.

However, for the contributor, it is important to remember that USM students are more than the petty, surface-level facts they share on

the first day of school. “Because I know that at our core we are more than our major, career interests and goals. We are a collection of stories that are scratching at our throats to be heard,” the contributor said.

While Humans of USM is not the first page to attempt to recreate Stanton’s vision in a different location (e.g. Humans of LSU, Humans of Virginia Tech, Humans of Southeastern and People of JSU) the co-creators are perhaps the firsts to execute the idea on a Mississippi college campus.

Humans of USM currently has 130 Facebook likes (80 of which were gained during the first week) and 103 followers on Instagram after featuring eight (Alexander Rivera, Alex Rhoden, Jack Hoda, Rosey Lau, Jacob Harvell, Alexis Le, Kaitlyn Kendall and Franky Lopez) out of 14,000 USM students.

Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’ heats up in this week’s episode Carlton McGrone printz reporter

What started off as a very lukewarm episode actually turned out to be a decent addition to the series, but is it enough to warrant a second season? No, no it’s not.

Surprisingly, I was disappointed that there wasn’t much to complain about in this episode. There certainly wasn’t much to cheer about, but I actually found myself drawn into what was happening rather than constantly checking my phone, begging for the hour to be over. This week, Karnak, Blackbolt’s cousin and advisor, is the focus of the episode. I can safely say that he went from being a dreadfully uninteresting, painfully dull character to a…less uninteresting character. At the very least, his power to analyze any situation and visualize the possible outcomes is unique.

Relationships are deepened and bonds are formed while Maximus continues to be a flop of a villain.

Now, the good and the bad of “Something Inhuman this Way Comes.” Honestly, the episode titles are a huge negative, considering the writers trade actual meaningful titles for catchy, clichéd sayings that are twisted to incorporate the show’s name.

The Good Gorgon’s and Karnak’s brotherly

relationship is a fresh addition that I didn’t realize the show needed until we got it, though why the writers wait until episode five to throw this actually interesting detail in, I have no idea. The two are shown to be very close, in flashbacks and it’s all punctuated by a satisfying conclusion of the duo’s reunion.

While in the middle of the woods, Karnak does a faux taekwondo routine with a stick of bamboo, which was incredibly cheesy and cringe-worthy, but also hilarious.

The classic Marvel action finally makes a return with Kar mak cutting bullets and defeating a group of farmers with a single stick of bamboo.

The Bad The lack of Lousie, who made such a lasting impression on last episode, was painful, but in her brief appearances, we’re rewarded with brilliant lines of sarcasm.

Maximus is annoying and u n i n t i m i d at i n g, as usual. Nothing new there.

Crystal and Dave build their relationship, and after he ran over her dog and brought Crystal to his ex-girlfriend’s home, she somehow is slowly falling for him.

It’s incredibly unrealistic, and I don’t understand why the writers decided to make all of these events occur over the course of a day.

‘Turtles All the Way Down’ is well worth your time and tears Carlton McGrone printz reporter

John Green’s first stand-alone contemporary novel since 2012 has finally arrived, and to no one’s surprise, it’s yet another terrific piece of fiction. Turtles All the Way Down is not only a delightful read, but it’s also a vital work for those of any age that feel separated, overwhelmed, misplaced or broken.

The novel follows 16-year-old Aza, a neurotic girl and obsessive germophobe with just a hint O.C.D tendencies. When a childhood friend’s father goes missing, Aza and her best friend are determined to find him and claim the $1 million reward that’s placed on him. As the novel unravels upon itself, Aza’s already spiraling thoughts entrap her, making her feel as if she’s at war with her own mind.

Turtles has already received a great deal of praise from prestigious news outlets and fans alike.

Though admittedly the novel begins at a somewhat sluggish pace, Green’s familiar infectious writing style does not disappoint and pulls you under its spell before you’ve realized you’re halfway through the novel in one afternoon.

Like Aza’s train of thought, the narrative flows naturally, weaving and winding through her raw, unf linching thoughts as she attempts to understand what it means to be alive and have free will. Green, unlike any other young adult writer, excels in his ability to humanize his characters, compelling you to become completely obsessed with Aza and co. even after you’ve flip that final page.

Like all of Green’s works, Turtles has a distinct ‘feel’ from his other novels; in that, this novel is easier to comprehend compared to some of his earlier works. Though,

through this simplicity, it also loses the classic complexity and unique characteristics that we’ve come to associate with Green. Despite this, Green manages to appeal to readers through a variety of storytelling techniques that further display his narrative prowess.

The highlights of this novel definitely rest in the amount of times I related to and teared up at Aza’s self-imprisonment. At several times throughout the novel, you’re taken on a seemingly baseless journey through Aza’s thoughts as she obsesses over what truly makes up the essence of a human being.

Are we simple organisms who lack all control and bend to the will and wishes to the bacteria that feasts on the nourishment that we feed it? Or are humans created to just live and die with a profound lack of meaning? These are the outof-body questions that the novel tackles, and I was happy to see that Green knocks them out of the park, causing me to, willingly or not, delve into what I consider to be humanity and the purpose of my existence.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a John Green novel without a stellar love interest and eventual hookup, which, honestly, was a bit disappointing, considering this is his most realistically depicted relationship. Unlike the gentlemanly, impossibly romantic, f lawed Augustus and timid, hilariously mighty Hazel Grace, Aza’s and Davis’ relationship is…well, surprisingly dull, which in way, is a completely deliberate mirroring of relationships based in reality.

Also, considering this novel is more focused on Aza and the human mind, a relationship is definitely not top priority, but this is where the bulk of my issues with the book stem from. The relationship itself is fine, but ultimately, it’s

It’s that time of the year again.

Foliage is shriveling up and crumbling, Ugg boots are groaning in the backs of Mississippi closets, the summer breeze has become slightly less summery, and ‘cuffing season’ - when miserable singles everywhere desire a person to share their misery - is in full swing. After all, who doesn’t want a hand to hold, a shoulder to lean on, a presence to shield you from judging eyes as you eat your third half-pound burger for the day?

Am I describing a boyfriend or a girdle?

Here’s why the latter makes a better option this winter.

tough to nail down a coherent plot.

The novel begins with a chase for a lost billionaire, but once that storyline wraps for a bit, Green homes in on the dynamics between Davis and Aza, which makes up a huge part of the novel, but if the relationship is dreadfully dull, then there’s not much that’s keeping you reading. I’ll admit, while reading scenes solely relying on the awkward interactions of Aza and Davis, I couldn’t help but to yawn and feel the desire to insert my bookmark and focus on some other labor. Though, I realize this may be because I’ve become so disconnected from the oversaturated young adult genre

and relate more to well-developed, flourishing relationships between 20-somethings. Essentially, the romance in this novel comes down to the reader’s tastes and preferences in fictional romance.

Despite these sparse, very minor gripes, it’s clear to me that this novel deserves to be read. Though not my favorite John Green novel, I found myself constantly entranced by how far he goes with this character.

Aza may not have suffered any physical pain, but seeing the mental scars and psychological trauma was incredibly painful. When even her best friend eventually becomes fed up and lashes out because of Aza’s O.C.D, anxiety-

strewn nature, I was crying at my desk. I cringed and hugged myself while pushing through Aza’s many therapy sessions where you see her attempt to give coherent descriptions to the unfiltered thoughts that intercept her mind and thrash at her on a daily basis.

I truly cannot put into words how connected I’ve become to this novel and how in the short time that I spent reading it, helped me through burdensome moments.

I cannot recommend this novel enough, especially if you are a fan of John Green’s earlier works.

Turtles All the Way Down is available everywhere and is waiting for you to experience it.

1. Girdles provide support without commentary.

I concede that commentary regarding reasons why your bad ideas are bad is generally a good thing. But sometimes, you just want support. Sometimes, you just want to do the bad things and deal with the regret later. A girdle won’t stop you, and it’ll be there to hold you when you hate yourself later.

2.Girdles are great eating companions.

Speaking of half-pound burgers— with a girdle, you don’t have to worry about looking like a cow when you eat a cow. Girdles make you look fabulous no matter what you eat (unless what you eat is a house. If you get THAT under-the-weather, please look for a companion of the therapist variety instead. Even girdles have limits.)

3. Constant hugs.

Who doesn’t want an eternal embrace around their midsection?

Wait, this sounds horrible.

4. Girdles grow with you (kind of.)

With a girdle, you don’t have to worry about your significant other remaining in stasis while you progress, or about remaining in stasis while your significant other progresses. A girdle will grow as you do, until you grow too much and it explodes.

Don’t grow too much.

5. Girdles will make you look eager and approachable.

If you’ve ever sat down in a chair with a girdle on, you know that they force you to sit up straight and lean forward. This gives you the guise of eagerness. Eagerness makes you more approachable. If you’re more approachable, people are more likely to talk to you.

Wait, this might be a disadvantage.

NFL protests illustrate the right to peaceful protest Thomas Turner printz reporter

If nothing else comes from the ever-growing protests that are flourishing and multiplying throughout the juggernaut that is the NFL brand, at least those of us concerned will be forced to do a meager amount of soulsearching and come to terms with the viewpoints we harbor towards some of the subjects that makes us cringe concerning the country in which we all live.

The ever-present silver lining can be seen in the questions we are forced to ask ourselves regarding precisely why these actions are bringing about the emotions that we feel.

The protests we see on Thursdays and Sundays, brought on by the kneeling of a deteriorating quarterback, have shaken avid sports fan and non-viewers alike to their core. This movement, if it can be called that, is occurring during a time of extraordinary strife and monumental discourse in the United States.

Fro m t h e g u t - w re n ch i n g, albeit, lawful, assembly of white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the same lawful gatherings we have seen at the entrance to our own campus for the past two plus years, one thing is painstakingly obvious: These protests are a reflexion of these assemblies.

Armed Forces, I watch these events with intrigue. I hear, read and view pundits and pontificators cite national pride, disrespect for our flag and reverence towards our troops or veterans as talking points to dissect the current situations we face as a nation. Those viewpoints are fair and warrant discussion.

Those viewpoints also ignore the glaringly gigantic elephant

in the room. It doesn’t matter what Colin Kaeper nick was protesting when all of this started.

Where is our sense of alarm for the fact that we are disparaging a peaceful protest? Have we forgotten that this nation of ours was founded on much less peaceful protests? Does a somewhat significant event referred to as The Boston Tea Party bring to mind a

much more active form of protest?

If Colin Kaepernick didn’t like Lipton product and chose to vent his frustrations with the company by going to his local grocery store and dumping all their Lipton products in a dumpster, he’d be arrested for destruction of property.

The aforementioned scenario is, in essence, what our ancestors chose to do to show their

dissatisfaction with the status quo.

I f yo u a s k m e, C o l i n K a e p e r n i c k ’s r e s p o n s e t o what he feels is unjust in his country is mild compared to how our ancestor s thought a protest should be handled.

If we, as the citizens and shepherds of our democracy, refuse to tolerate a peaceful protest, what’s next? Free speech?

Boy Scouts allowing girls membership is unnecessary Lanie Leach printz reporter

On May 23, 2013, the Boy Scouts began allowing openly gay males to be admitted. On July 25, 2015, the Boy Scouts began allowing openly gay leaders to be admitted. On Jan. 28, 2017, the Boy Scouts began allowing transgender boys to be admitted. On Oct. 11, 2017, the Boy Scouts of America announced that it will begin allowing girls to join in January of 2018. All of these recent amendments to the Boy Scouts of America have been progressive ones, but has the Boy Scouts taken it too far with the admittance of girls?

I consider myself a very accepting person, but I also believe that some things should be kept a certain way, i.e.: the Boy Scouts. I appreciate the gesture of admitting girls into the program, but it’s called Boy Scouts for a reason. I’m not against it necessarily, but I think that it should be a push for the Girl Scouts to step it up a little bit.

In the Boy Scouts, boys are learning outdoor skills and preparing themselves for earning their Eagle Scout rank.

The Girl Scouts are aimed at STEM, life skills and entrepreneurship.

What’s the end-goal, though?

Boy Scouts have the opportunity of earning a hefty scholarship if they earn their Eagle Scout rank, so what about the Girl Scouts?

There’s the Gold Award, but are its benefits as big as an Eagle Scout’s?

Upon reading through the Girl Scouts’ website, you can read that during the famous “Cookies Program” the Girl Scouts are being taught a variety of “skills” such as decisionmaking, money management and

business ethics. What fun for a young child (or should I say the child’s parent). The Girls also have an outdoor program, but it’s not nearly as interesting as the Boy Scouts’.

Girl Scouts are encouraged to get outside and “explore colors, shapes, and light in the outdoors, and create art inspired by the natural world.” No wonder about a dozen girls have tried to be admitted into the Boy Scouts since the 1970’s.

Not all girls are interested in art, and that’s okay. If the Girl Scouts are so worried about the announcement by the Boy Scouts’ National President, Randall Stephenson, who said, “I’ve seen nothing that develops leadership skills and discipline like this organization. It is time to make these outstanding leadership development programs available to girls,” then do something about it and stop whining about how “they’re trying to take our girls!”

In reality, how many girls are actually going to join the Boy Scouts?

Is it really that big of a deal? Is it worth making snide comments about and using the “Angry Reaction” on Facebook? The Boy Scouts have had a decline in its membership lately, so it can be inferred that the admittance of girls is to open up to new members.

In Scandinavia, they have actually merged the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts into one collective unit. Could this be another possible reason for the recent announcement? Would this actually be a better solution to the controversy? If the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts worked together on this, then could that not evidently end up solving the problem?

I mean, you know what they say: “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Golden Eagles drop contest to UAB, 1-0 Grant Chighizola printz reporter

After two tie contests against conference opponents Old Dominion and Charlotte at home, the Southern Miss Women’s soccer team (6-7-3, 0-53 C-USA) lost a close one to the UAB Blazers on the road in Birmingham.

The only score in the contest came in the first minute when UAB forward Caroline Kehrer got one past Southern Miss goalie Kendell Mindnich for a 1-0 UAB lead. This score would hold for the rest of the game, giving UAB the victory over the Golden Eagles.

Despite out-shooting the Blazers 16 to 11, including six shots on goal, the Golden Eagles were not able to get one past UAB goalie Kelsey Daugherty, who had five saves on the night.

Freshman Miah Zuazua lead the Golden Eagles with six shots and two shots on goal. JoAnnie Ramos, Karen Torres and Stephanie Garcia each finished with two shots apiece.

Fouls were also a big part of the contest. Southern Miss committed five fouls against UAB, including four in the first half. On the other side, UAB committed six fouls against the Golden Eagles, resulting in an aggressive game for both teams.

Southern Miss returns to action on the road against conference opponent Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Oct 22. The game is set for 2 p.m.

Golden Eagles fall short against Florida Atlantic Andrew Abadie printz reporter

The Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi hosted to the Lady Owls of Florida Atlantic on Sunday, losing a hard-fought five set match.

In an evenly contested first set, the Lady Owls put together 15 kills and limited themselves to two errors, taking the opening set 25-20.

Costly errors hindered Southern Miss throughout the second set, as the Golden Eagles blew a five to one advantage, their largest lead of the set. A net violation and unforced errors opened the door for the Owls, as they took advantage of nine kills

by FAU’s Gabrielle Dixon and took a two sets to none lead into the break.

The Golden eagles found their legs coming out of the break, gaining the lead and never giving it back. USM held a 13 to six lead before FAU battled back, cutting the Golden Eagle lead to four, at 16 to 12. FAU would add four more points, but Kylie Grandy’s tenth and final kill of the third frame slammed the door on the Lady Owls, giving Southern Miss the set 25 to 16.

Head Coach Amanda Berkley was proud of her team’s ability to fight back, and not give in when the pressure of being down two sets to none began to mount.

“I was really proud of our team for coming back,” Berkley said.

“Down zero to two and making it a game. We didn’t give up.”

Errors plagued Southern Miss throughout the fourth set, with the Lady Owls holding the lead, until another Kylie Grandy kill would nod things up at 14. USM gained the lead with the score at 17 apiece, when a net violation gave the Lady Eagles the 18 to 17 advantage.

An emphatic Catherine Repsher kill forced a timeout by FAU and gave USM a 21 to 18 lead, and a

noticeable surge of momentum.

Seven points later, Grandy would power another kill, her twenty-first of the match, down the beak of the Owls, forcing a decisive fifth set.

“When we get kills, it definitely builds momentum,”

Repsher said. “We feed off each other with the intensity, and the energy that we bring when we come together. Once you get a kill, it all comes together.”

Unfortunately, for the Golden Eagle faithful, Florida Atlantic found

their second wind in the fifth frame, closing out the Lady Eagles 15 to 10, for a three sets to two victory. “ I t h i n k we l e a r n e d we need to pass and play better defense,” Berkley explained.

“Every point matters.”

Southern Miss falls to 13-7 overall, and 4-4 in conference, while FAU improves to 15-9 overall, with a conference record of 5-3. Southern Miss travels to Charlotte on Friday at 5 p.m.
