Saturday, October 14 at 6 p.m.

This year’s homecoming theme is “Behold the Gold.”

The homecoming parade on Saturday will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by tailgating and the traditional Eagle Walk at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the parade floats will be unveiled at the front

of campus. The teams of various student organizations work on decorating both a standing float and a parade float through the week.

Missy McGee has won the run-off election for House District 102 Ashley Hobson social media editor

McGee secured her seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives with 2,107 votes while her opponent, Kathryn Rehner, earned an even 1,000 votes. The run-off election was a result of all candidates failing to obtain 50 percent plus one of the vote in the special election that was first held on Sept. 12.

McGee earned approximately 45 percent of the vote with 1,475 votes while Rehner trailed with 24 percent by earning 807 votes in total in the special election held in September. With this win, McGee will serve until December 2019 to finish the term previously left vacant by current Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker. This will be McGee’s first term as an elected official. McGee plans to spend the time between now and when the next legislative session meets in January learning from and getting to know other legislators.

“There have been so many members [of the Legislature] who have already offered their help and advice and support so I’m going to listen to everything that anybody offers me and [I] look forward to learning all that I can,” McGee said.

McGee said of her campaign success, “I am honored. I am humbled and overwhelmed by the support the folks of District 102 have shown me. I’m so honored to be able to serve the place

where I’ve spent my whole life.

We have so many strengths here in Hattiesburg, but I also know that we have challenges that we need to address.”

Areas such as education and infrastructure fall into those

challenging areas according to McGee. McGee, who announced h e r c a n d i d a c y i n Ju l y, r a n her campaign as a lifelong Hattiesburg resident and was quoted by Fox 23 as promising

to focus on being an advocate for USM and support the medical community as well as local business. McGee ran as an independent.

Many critics were disappointed in the turnout for the special

election held on Sept. 12 when only 21.1 percent of Hattiesburg’s 15,753 registered voters turned out to the polls. That number dropped to 19.02 percent with only 2,997 voters making their voices heard during the runoff.

SGA hosts 73rd annual Miss USM Pageant, Macy Mitchell crowned Sierra Wood printz reporter

On Saturday Oct. 7, the University of Southern Mississippi held the 73rd annual Miss University of Southern Mississippi Scholarship Pageant. To participate in the pageant, contestants must be current full-time students of USM in good standing with the university and hold a minimum 2.25 GPA. The winner of the pageant won a $1500 scholarship.

Participants included: Brooke B u l l o c k , M a c k e n’ z S m i t h , Fe l i c i t y S l a t e r, L a r h o n d a Mack, Aaliyah Bass, Jessica Fields, Charli Cubbage, Macy Mitchell, and Taylor Robbins.

The competition began with an introduction to the contestants, followed by a swimwear showing, and special talent. The competition concluded with evening wear, which included an onstage question. Contestants were scored on their performance in each category. Prior to the competition each contestant had a private interview with the judges which was worth 25%, their talent perfor mance was worth 30%, lifestyle and fitness 10%, evening wear worth 15%, and their response to the on-stage question was worth 20%. the events were two auditors.

Five judges, each with their own connection to the university, made up the panel for this years competition. On the judges’ panel were Shea Kidd Houze, Ron Locke, Kyle Nixon, Stacey Neimeyer, and Amelia Rogers.

Dr. Shea Kidd Houze is currently USM’s Director of New Student

and Retention Programs and was named Miss USM in 2002.

The pageant first began in 1947 as a swim suit competition and has continued to flourish ever since. The Miss USM scholarship pageant is an official preliminary of the Miss Mississippi pageant.

This means that the winner of Miss USM goes on to compete

for the title of Miss Mississippi.

The contestants of the pageant had been preparing for months in advance. Charli Cubbage, a Junior Communications Studies major and contestant number 7, said that for the event, “we have to practice our talents and get our outfits together. We also have to eat healthy, workout, and stay up on

current events.” Cubbage also said, “I love this university and Miss USM is a great way to represent it.

It challenges me to be my best self.”

Aaliyah Bass, a Sophomore Broadcast Journalism major and contestant number 5, agreed that staying up on current events is very important. “We have to be prepared. We never know what kind of questions will be thrown at you,” she said. The onstage question and the private interview with the judges are said to be the most nerve-wracking part of the process because they are the most difficult to prepare for. Bass even said that she joined the competition to get out of her comfort zone and become more involved on campus.

The pageant was hosted by for mer USM SGA President Jeffrey George and two-time Miss USM winner Hannah Roberts Badon. George currently serves as a Councilman for the city of Hattiesburg. Badon was named Miss USM in both 2013 and 2015, and is currently studying medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Macy Mitchell was crowned Miss University of Souther n Mississippi 2017. Mitchell was crowned by last year’s winner, Kaelyn Wolfe, who during the competition performed a sample of her talent with a tap dance number.

Macy Mitchell was previously named Miss USM in 2015.

Hurricane Nate makes landfall on Gulf Coast, minimal damage Kaitlyn Watkins executive editor

Hurricane Nate made landfall on October 7 at the mouth of the Mississippi River on the southeaster n side of Louis ian a as a Cat e g o r y 1 stor m. Early Sunday morning, the hurricane made a second landfall near Biloxi, Mississippi, causing some f lood damage.

H oweve r, H u r r i c a n e N at e was quickly downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved out of the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center issued an alert at 7 a.m. on Sunday which said storm surge warnings remained in effect for the areas between Mississippi and Alabama to Okaloosa and Walton Counties in F lorida.

Assistant Director of University Communications for the Gulf Park campus Jenny Tate said that the Southern Miss campus i n L o n g B e a ch h a d m i n o r impact from Hurricane Nate.

“University of Souther n Mississippi officials have issued an all-clear for coastal operations at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs and Stennis Space Center in Hancock County following Hurricane Nate,” Tate said. “Regularly scheduled classes and operations will resume at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10.The Gulf Park campus weathered the storm very well, with minor impacts. However, retur ning faculty and staff who identify any facility concerns that could be storm-related should contact appropriate Physical Plant personnel for their respective locations.”

USM Museum of Art presents “Portraits of Southerners” Morgan Clark news editor

12, The University of Southern Mississippi’s Museum of Art will present “Portraits of Southerners: A Celebration of Souther n Photography.” The gallery will open at 7 p.m. with a reception in the George Hurst building following a lecture from William R. Ferris.

The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Gonzales Auditorium in the Liberal Arts Building on campus.

The lecture is sponsored by the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Ferris is a Southern photographer from Vicksburg, Mississippi.

According to his online collection in the Southern Folklife Collection, he later moved and completed high school in North Andover, Massachusetts. Ferris ear ned his B.A. in English Literature at Davidson College in 1964, and then later in 1965, earned his M.A. in English Literature From Northwestern University.

From 1965 to 1966, he studied in Dublin, Ireland at Trinity College.

In 1967, he earned his masters degree and Ph.D. in folklore from The University of Pennsylvania.

“Ferris’s scholarship has focused on the American South and its literature, folklore, and culture, through a variety of media: print, sound, film, and photography. From 1970 to 1972, he was an assistant professor in the Department of

English at Jackson State University.

From 1972 to 1979, he held a joint appointment as associate professor in American Studies and AfroAmerican Studies at Yale University.

During his tenure at Yale, Ferris cofounded the Center for Southern Folklore in Memphis, Tennessee, and was its director from 1972 to 1984. Ferris returned to the South, and, from 1979 to 1997, he served as founding director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and professor of anthropology at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

In 1997 Ferris was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. When his four-year term as Chairman ended in 2001, he spent six months as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Since 2002, Ferris has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the Joel R. Williamson Eminent Professor of History, Adjunct Professor in American Studies, Folklore, and School of Information and Library Science, and he also serves Senior Associate Director of the Center for the Study of the American South,” said his biog raphy.

“Ferris’s most recent book, Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues, was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2009. His forthcoming book, A Southern Album: Stories From Writers, Scholars, Musicians,

from the “Do Good Fund,” “a public collection of photographs taken in the American South since World War II.” The subject matter is of people in everyday life that represent the

Southern lifestyle and culture and will include Ferris’ work, along with other photographers of the South.

HCLO presents first Shakespeare in the Park Natalie Buckley printz reporter

The Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera will be presenting William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” October 12-15 at the Historic Meador Homestead as part of its first Shakespeare in the Park.

Founded in 1976, HCLO has helped renovate the Saenger Theater and has put on more than 120 shows since it was chartered in 1977, according to its website. HCLO

President Lindsay Williams said that the organization seeks “to provide a safe, creative, enjoyable environment for local performers and audiences alike and to serve [the] community through the healing power of entertainment, social outreach, advocacy and the sharing of the arts’ overwhelmingly positive message of compassion, inclusion and unity.”

“Macbeth” is the first of HCLO’s Shakespeare in the Park lagniappe series, which are shows outside the organization’s

regular season. The production is directed by Rob Mulholland and features USM history instructor Miles Doleac as Macbeth.

“Macbeth” is a tragedy of a Scottish general, Macbeth, who encounters a witch trio that prophesizes that he will become king.

Driven mad by his destiny and the orders of his wife, Macbeth murders the king and takes the throne, ultimately fulfilling his prophecy by force. The play continues to follow Macbeth’s madness and

the consequences that follow it.

The Historic Meador Homestead is located at 6775 US Hwy 49 N, one minute from the Convention Center, in Hattiesburg. Grounds will open at 5 p.m., and performances will begin at dusk, or around 6:30 p.m. The show will be about 90 minutes long. The audience has the option to bring a picnic or to purchase a “proper tea complete with scones” in advance, paying homage to the setting of the play— Scotland. Alcoholic beverages and

soft drinks will also be available to purchase on the grounds.

HCLO is eager to present this first Shakespeare in the Park and promises it will be a “wonderful, spooky time.”

In my last column, I told you guys I was celebrating one year of “Swipe Right” by playing matchmaker over Tinder for my friend Kaitlyn. Here are some things I’ve learned.

1.) People don’t forget it’s you.

When your whole brand is Tinder-related and you’re likely the only hijabi most people in the area have ever seen and most definitely the only one they’ve seen on Tinder, they tend to remember you. Already, I’ve had one person ask if he’s going to end up in another Tinder article and another complain that he doesn’t want to meet Kaitlyn because he’s still waiting on his date with me. He was promptly unmatched. I’ve had people swipe just because they want to end up in an article.

It would appear that masochism and desperation go hand in hand.

2.) Matchmaking is awkward, no matter the platform.

Midway through our horrible social experiment, Kaitlyn stumbled across another route to her soulmate. She airdropped chicken nugget pictures to everyone within range. Though I doubt this will become standard and accepted practice any time in the near future, it’s been an admirable effort with surprisingly fruitful results when it works. When it doesn’t work… Well. Being rejected is bad; having your nuggets rejected is downright heartbreaking.

3.) Sometimes, in spite of your best intentions and desire to find your friend her soulmate, your horrible personality comes through.

There’s a level of trust and confidence here that I’m not entirely comfortable with, if I’m being honest. I have mentioned, time and time again, that the love plot in my novel just kind of falls through - there is no resolution there. I know next to nothing about love; I know even less about good relationships. To make matters worse, I’m boring and easily irritated. It’s only a matter of time, then, that those less-than-welcoming personality traits shine through and obliterate Kaitlyn’s chances with Hattiesburg’s male population.

4.) Playing with people’s lives, no matter how humorously, is probably still not a great thing to do.

If I were to pick an Austen novel to best represent my college years, it’d be “Emma.” For you non-literary folk unfamiliar with this masterpiece, the movie “Clueless” is a modern film adaptation.

Basically, a girl thinks she’s good at matchmaking, proceeds to ruin others’ lives, ruins her own, and yet somehow ends up with the boy by the end of the story. Replace the boy at the end with a mozzarella stick and you’ll understand why I say Austen had human disasters like me in mind while she wrote this story.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony Gives a Fascinating Take on the Murder-Mystery Genre Carlton McGrone printz reporter

Heartbreak, terror, and the occasional murder await players of the third iteration in the Danganronpa murder-mystery series, a video game franchise that many fans of the genre may, sadly, be unacquainted with.

Danganronpa (a Japanese term that is a compound of the phrase ‘dangan’ meaning ‘bullet’ and ‘ronpa’ meaning ‘refute’) is a series of murder-mystery games that all center around ultimate teenagers that are trapped in a high school and forced to kill one another in a heinous game. Though the basic premise may sound profoundly simple, in order to remain alive and eventually escape, the player must investigate each murder so that they may be able to defend himself and the innocent students in a high-paced class trial. Fortunately for those that are unfamiliar with the series, this particular entry is not intimately connected to past games, so inexperienced players are free to pick up this game and play to their hearts’ content.

Despite being the third addition to this franchise, Danganronpa V3’s strengths lie in its originality in character design, story, and in the unique ways the students are

either murdered or executed. Compared to previous entries, Killing Harmony has been given a complete makeover, ditching the stale, flat interface and trading it for vibrant, modern way to interact with other characters during class trials and daily life. The art style, besides looking sharper and more visually stimulating, doesn’t change from its usual iconic 2D character models and fluorescent pink blood. For those that are familiar with the plot of the other two games, it not only adds to the aesthetic makeup of the world in which this game takes place, it also provides players with a new cast of genuinely interesting personalities that you will hate to see meet their untimely demise at each chapter’s end.

The game provides an authentically chilling experience that follows the death of hopeful, future flames that represent the best that society has to offer. Each death is packed with symbolic meaning that impacts the story at its core and makes the player search inward for answers to questions concerning the case and the reasoning behind a character’s mode of death. You can’t help but to fall in love with at least one character and be crushed when/if he or she dies.

However, the in-depth, seemingly spotless plot only causes the game’s imperfections to

feel more tangible and keep the game from getting a far from perfect rating. The controls during class trials and while exploring the campus are sometimes incredibly awkward and at times overly complicated and unnecessary. The voice acting also further deflates the mood with flat, unflattering lines that are sometimes delivered during scenes with otherwise heavy speeches, making monologues come off as absurd or childish. The story, though eerie and amusing, feels as if it is following a formula that has been set and arguably stretched to its thinnest since the first game was introduced to the U.S. Killing Harmony’s story centers around Kaede Akamatsu, a girl who has been deemed the ultimate pianist, and 14 other “Ultimate” students with their own array of quirky, dynamic personalities. The students wake up in a seemingly uninhabited high school and find that not only can they not recall how they got there but that their memories have also been erased and possibly tampered with. In the midst of their confusion, their captor reveals himself as the adorably disturbing, black-and-white robotic bear Monokuma, whom is the familiar imprisoner of the past two titles with different controllers in both games. He

informs the Ultimate students that, for his entertainment and to inspire despair into the hearts of the public, they will be forced to participate in a killing game. Meaning, anyone who kills another student and gets away with it can graduate while the others will be trapped in the school forever.

From there, the plot unfolds into a fight for freedom while also battling with or against those that you’ve been forced to cooperate with.

Like the past two titles, the gameplay in Killing Harmony is primarily set in three parts: daily life, deadly life, and the class trial. During daily life, you control Kaede as she learns more about her fellow captives.

You can buy gifts for your favorite classmates to get them to spill everything about their lives before being trapped in the academy.

In the first chapter, the length of this section is expanded to more thoroughly ensure that you’re destroyed when characters are inevitably killed. Once a murder occurs, Kaede’s daily life turns into a deadly life, which involves investigating every cranny of the academy and its campus for clues leading to the culprit’s motive and method of committing murder.

The meat of the gameplay takes place during the third phase of the game, class trials.

Once all of the evidence has been gathered, all 16 students gather in a court room set up by Monokuma in order to determine whodunit. During the trial, testimonies are literally shot down and slashed in half in a series of incredibly satisfying mini-games to uncover the truth. Once the class trial has seemingly reached its end, the students must vote on who they think the murderer is, though if their guesses are wrong, the murderer graduates and goes free while the other students must suffer an eternity in the academy.

All set against a background of funky, rhythmic music that you won’t get out of your head for weeks, Killing Harmony is a great addition to a franchise unlike anything you’ve ever played. Its mysteries will have you guessing who the killer is until the truth is finally revealed, and as usual, the ending will leave you speechless and begging for the next entry in this forever-unraveling adventure to survive the despair that has overcome the world.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is out now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita game systems for $60 and $40 respectively.

The past two entries are sold in a doublepack, Danganronpa 1-2 Reload for varying prices on PlayStation 4.

Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’ receives poor reviews Carlton McGrone printz reporter

Reviews for Marvel’s Inhumans have not been kind, to put it lightly. Seeing as I’m an avid M C U, M a r v e l C i n e m a t i c Universe, fan, I’d like to give my initial impressions on this unusual, bold step that Marvel seems to be taking. This’ll prove to either be a lot of fun or a long, arduous jour ney; only time will tell.

Viewers have been waiting in anticipation for this new addition to the variety of shows that Marvel has produced following the success of the 2012 film Avengers. As another addition to the ABC side of the MCU, Inhumans proves to be yet another low-budget, less cinematic production, which is perfectly fine, considering the final outcome is close to stellar.

Marking the MCU’s second appearance on ABC, Inhumans continues Marvel’s successful stride into weekly television. The two-hour premiere demonstrates a promising season ahead for fans of this strange, endearing series.

However, before beginning on the third episode, a recap of the first two is well past due.

“Behold…The Inhumans” sets up the world that this story will take place in, namely Attilan, home of the super powered race inhumans that resides on the moon, and the familiar landscape

of Earth. The story is centered around Black Bolt, the self-mute king of Attilan that threatens to shatter the existence of anyone who hears his voice, and the rest of the royal court that he commands. Though a powerful, feared leader, Black Bolt is seen as too passive and lenient towards the humans that drove the inhumans from Earth. His brother Maximus, who is constantly criticized for being a powerless, weak human, decides to lead a coup against the king and his court.

In the end, Black Bolt, his wife Medusa and his cousins Karnak and Gorgon narrowly escape to the only safe place- Earth.

“Those Who Would Destroy Us” picks up right where episode one left off. Members of the royal family are now refugees of their own planet and are separated after being transported to Hawaii with the help of Queen Medusa’s sister, Princess Crystal.

A scientist receives abnor mal signals of unknown objects hurtling toward Earth and she is promptly dismissed because of hysteria. Meanwhile, on Attilan Maximus tries to win over Crystal’s allegiance and sends one of his guards to find and/or kill the royal family. Before the episode ends, viewers are gifted with a very handsome Black Bolt running from police after unknowingly committing theft and

assault, and an incredibly cheesy fight between Medusa and the guard from Attilan. In the end, the family is still separated and the guard actually survives the fight by using her powers of self healing.

Now, let’s get into episode three, “Divide and Conquer” with the good and the bad before a brief plot synopsis.

THE GOOD Producers are obviously setting up a heavily ambitious storyline with the cast diverse characters and their interesting bonds and powers.

The powers themselves, though not g round-breaking, are incredibly fascinating to watch set into action.

The complexity of the story comes to life as the royal family meet the beings they’ve been conditioned to hate- humans.

Though it could be done with an overall better presentation, this plot point demonstrates promise for shifting the psyches and motives of the inhumans.

Mortin, though incredibly cheesy in his seemingly useless mask, receives a great introduction and demonstrates a game-changing power and possibly the end of Black Bolt.

THE BAD The unbeatable curse that this show faces is the “low-

budgetness” of the production.

In terms of Marvel productions, Inhumans is largely…unsatisfying.

Though, in terms of a generic show about super powers, this definitely holds its own.

Incredibly bad acting during s c e n e s t h at a c t o r s h ave t o respond to awful CGI powers.

Literally ANY scenes that take place on the uninteresting, drab obviously low-budget television sets that make up the moon.

The episode starts with Gorgon preparing to fight the guards that he’s sure Maximus will send for him. Though he tries to get his rescuers to leave the beach and save themselves, they decide to stay and fight. Unknowing to Gorgon, Maximus sends the only inhuman that can kill Black Bolt, Mortin, along with the patrol.

On Attilan, Maximus convinces Crystal to align herself with him in order to truly unite their people, but once it is revealed that Maximus plans to abolish the caste system, which has been in place for centuries, Crystal goes against his wishes and escapes to Earth. In a flashback, it is revealed that Maximus was once an inhuman but he mysteriously

reverted to being a human, which explains his hatred for the caste system that forces those with useless/undesirable powers into the mines while inhumans with amazing gifts rule society.

Gorgon and his g roup of humans finally come face-toface with Maximus’ guards and an all-out battle rips the forest apart as the inhumans begin to display their array of strange powers. There are casualties on both sides, and Gorgon narrowly escapes death when Mortin lifts his mask and fires off a massive beam of light.

Black Bolt, still imprisoned, meets an Earth-bound inhuman and lear ns that people with powers are being hunted by the gover nment, never to be seen again. After being told this infor mation, Black Bolt decides he’s done being docile and escapes the prison with the other inhuman after a massive prison brawl between the prison guards and abused prisoners.

The episode wraps up with Medusa reaching the prison just as Black Bolt flies off in a helicopter towards the unknown.

As Inhumans has held a 7 percent on Rotten Tomatoes since its premiere, it’ll be interesting to see if the show ever pulls itself out of the hole it’s dug for itself.

Ah, college: every senior in high school’s dream. You’re out of your parents’ house now, so that means you have more freedom than ever. You can stay out as late as you want. You’re also a legal adult- you know what that means. Quite honestly, now that I’m a real college kid, I have never been so tired. I finally understand those gaudy shirts that read “I can’t adult today.” With having all of this new freedom, there’s a catch and it’s called responsibility.

Being an adult and being on your own in college is hard.

I’m supposed to be doing my own laundry (but I keep bringing it home for my mom… sorry), making sure I do all my homework, working two jobs (I have no money though), and just so much more. My mom summed up adulthood pretty well when she said, “You know you’re an adult when you have to make your own bedtime.” Wow, does this ring true in the world of college life. Whether people are studying in the library until 2:00 AM, or partying until who knows what time- bedtime is a vital part of surviving college responsibly.

Personally I try to go to bed around 12:30- but that’s if I’m lucky, because I am one of the world’s greatest procrastinatorsso an early bedtime is not usually something I can attain.

Procrastinating is so unhealthy.

10 minutes before the due date. There’s a meme from the popular TV show Rick and Morty where they finish one of their infamous adventures and are finally able to breathe so they’re hysterically crying and screaming “Why do we do this to ourselves?!” Literally this is me. But hey, it works and I get everything done, so it’s fine.

Being an adult gives you a lot of freedoms though. You can get

tattoos, piercings, and dye your hair some crazy color(s). With me though, I’m always asking my parents for permission. Why? Oh, I don’t know, maybe because they’re graciously paying for my tuition. That’s just me though.

I mean, I’d love to get a tattoo one day. I think they’re super cool. Also, if you choose to get one and your parent(s) get mad at you, just remember this: if you live on campus they can’t get to

your dorm without meeting you at the front desk first, so you’re basically safe. You’re also in control of how much and where you go out. There’s no more curfew (except for visitors in the dor m and if you’re even two minutes late checking them out you get a ticket), and there’s no more asking for permission to go to your friend’s house or parties.

Freedom also gives you the opportunity to begin figuring

yourself out. You’re not under your parents’ roof, so you have this ability to be exposed to new things like new clubs, new ideas, new people, and even new food. Slowly but surely we’re figuring out who we are. This freedom is invigorating, but it also has a lot of responsibility attached to it. It’s your life, live it how you want to, but do so wisely and make good choices.

Low voter turnout in elections affects Hattiesburg Ashley Hobson social media editor

When Toby Barker was elected as Hattiesburg’s new Mayor in June of 2017, he did so in an election that saw only 35 percent of voters turnout. This translated to 5,681 citizens voting for Barker and 3,797 voting for Dupree.

Barker took office on July 3, 2017 and will serve the city of Hattiesburg for the next four years.

Barker’s election left a seat vacant in the Mississippi House of Representatives, which caused a special election to be called to fill the seat. The special election took place on Sept. 12 between Missy McGee, Kathryn Rehner, Casey Mercier, and Cory Ferraez.

3,325 of 15,753 eligible voters showed up that day and sent McGee and Rehner to a runoff election which was held on October 3rd. McGee secured the house seat when 2,107 registered voters cast their ballots for McGee compared to Rehner’s 1,000.

35 percent of voters turned out for the mayoral election.

21 percent of voters turned out for the special election.

19.7 percent of voters showed up to the election that placed a new public servant in the House of Representatives in the state of Mississippi.

100 percent of citizens have the right to vote.

100 percent of citizens have the duty to vote.

On any given day, you can scroll through Facebook, Twitter, even Instagram and see someone complaining about something.

“Our roads need to be fixed.” “ O u r s c h o o l ’ s budget just got cut.”

“Why doesn’t somebody do something about this?”

“Why are they letting him get away with this?”

“Who put this idiot in office?”

The short answer is: we did.

Abstaining to vote for someone who you believe should be in office is a vote for someone you believe should not be in office.

The American democracy is a system meant to give each individual a voice. The right to vote is fundamental to the American system. Waiting to vote in the Presidential election only is waiting too soon. Our representatives and senators are the ones who will vote on new laws, designate and approve budget cuts and be a voice for us. Sitting back and saying one vote, your vote, doesn’t matter i s no longer g o o d e n o u g h .

Did people not vote because

they didn’t care or because they weren’t able to? The discussion of voter turnout must begin a larger discussion of the way our elections take place. College students who live on campus can

register to vote in local elections.

But how many of these students have cars? Does Hattiesburg run a dependable public transportation system to get them to the polls and back to class?

According to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as “4 or more people being injured or killed,” there have been 277 mass shootings since the beginning of 2017. The question that this violence calls into attention is clear. Could common sense gun control measures curb this number and are such measures passable in the Unites States Congress?

One of the reasons gun control is so heavily debated is because many argue that it simply does not and cannot work. Their logic is that criminals will use gun violence as an answer regardless of what the legislation says.

Furthermore, they feel as though the legislation would only infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens.

Dallas Taylor, a University of Southern Mississippi sophomore sports coaching major, affirmed this side of the gun control debate.

“I don’t agree with it. I don’t think it will change anything,” said Taylor. If people want to kill people, they will get guns, whether it is legally or illegally.”

Fortunately, the data produces the opposite assertion. “Evidence from 130 studies in 10 countries suggests that in certain nations the simultaneous implementation of laws targeting multiple firearms restrictions is associated with reductions in firearm deaths. Laws restricting the purchase of (e.g., background checks) and access to (e.g., safer storage) firearms are also associated with lower rates of intimate partner homicides and firearm unintentional deaths in children, respectively,” said an “Epidemiological Reviews” study.

The United States has more firearms than any other nation on this planet. “The Small Arms” international survey found that the United States has more guns per capita than any country in the world. The survey found that in 2007, there were 88.8 guns per 100 people. The Congressional Research Service’s studies found that the American people own more than 300 million guns. Additionally,

The United States has more deaths by guns than any other developed nation in the world. According to United Nations data compiled by The Guardian, the United States had more gun-related homicides per capita than any developed country in the world. In 2012, the United States lead the developed world with 29.7 gun related homicides per one million people.

With all this in mind, it is clearer

than ever that the United States has a problem with gun violence.

Unfortunately, gun control legislation seems more like a distant dream than a possible reality for the American people, and the forces working against legislation can seem insurmountable. It is politically unpopular for many politicians to propose any sort of gun control legislation. The National Rifle Association is one of the most

indomitable lobbying forces in Washington. They contribute millions of dollars in campaign donations to ensure that gun control is politically kept off the table.

Southern Miss claims first conference road win against UTSA Thomas Turner printz reporter

Led by backup quarterback Keon Howard’s 220 yard, three touchdown perfor mance, Souther n Miss walked out of San Antonio’s Alamo Bowl Saturday night with a much needed 31-29 conference victory.

The scoring began early for the Golden Eagles, as Howard found junior Jay’Shawn Washington for a 32 yard touchdown pass with 9:37 remaining in the first quarter to put the Golden Eagles up 7-3.

USM wouldn’t score again until the third quarter when Howard would find junior Korey Robertson for a 20 yard touchdown reception and then one minute and 47 seconds later, freshman standout, Quez Watkins, for a 48 yard touchdown pass to put USM up 2113 heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior running back Ito Smith, Jr. would make his presence felt early in the fourth quarter when he took a handoff 89 yards to the end zone to put the Golden Eagles in control 28-13 with 13:20 remaining in the game. Junior placekicker Parker Shaunfield would finish off the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a 24 yard field goal to put USM up 31-23 with one minute 56 seconds remaining in the contest.

A last gasp touchdown by the Roadrunners would put UTSA within a two point conversion of tying the game with 48 seconds left, but the two point attempt would fail, thus sealing a much needed victory for the Golden Eagles.

USM will host UTEP at M.M. Roberts Stadium this Saturday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Southern Miss volleyball (128, 2-2 C-USA) team traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky to face conference opponent, Western Kentucky (18-2, 5-0 C-USA) this past

Friday. The Golden Eagles dropped all three sets to the Lady Hilltoppers, a team currently receiving votes for the top 25 in the national rankings.

The first set was a back-andforth battle between both sides but Western Kentucky capitalized on late errors from the Golden Eagles. After

trailing for majority of the first set, the Lady Hilltoppers called a timeout and then found their rhythm. After chipping away at the lead, three kills and three kill errors solidified the first victory for Western Kentucky, 25-21.

Both Western Kentucky and Southern Miss’ play repeated as the

first and second set mirrored each other.

Western Kentucky’s Alyssa Cavanaugh made a great impact on the set as her 24 kills kept Southern Miss in the contest. The Golden Eagles errors was a catalyst to the Lady Hilltoppers success in this set as another kill error lead to WKU winning the set and

one win closer to the sweep, 2-0.

The third set was completely one-sided as WKU completed the sweep with a 25-14 victory.

Southern Miss looks to redeem itself Friday at 7 p.m. against Louisiana Tech. Game is set for 7p.m.
