DIRTY BIRDS Friday, April 29 • University police responded to a report of a student possessing a controlled substance around 1 p.m. in McCarty Hall. That student will be explaining his/herself to the dean of students.

Saturday, April 30 • A student was disturbing the peace at the Sigma Chi house around 2 a.m. UPD apprehended the situation quickly and referred the student to the dean of students.

• UPD apprehended another trespasser at Lake Sehoy around 1:30 p.m. The case is closed.

• A report of vandalism on the Phi Kappa Tau house’s fence came in around 4:30 p.m. The incident occurred sometime between Friday at 10 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. The case remains open.

Editorial: Dish out accountability Editorial Team Printz Staff

Across the board, The Student Printz editorial staff avoids the Fresh Food Company, each for our own reasons. We have stayed away for a variety of reasons including bad experiences with service and food quality, our unfavorable views of the selections offered and our dislike of the pricing or nature of the meal plans.

Admittedly, when it comes to what we eat, we are stubborn and not easily swayed.

Our personal reservation regarding Eagle Dining reflect those issues presented in “Listen Up, Eagle Dining,” a blog by USM junior Carmine Harrell and in a Change.org petition started by USM sophomore Jarrod Colley.

Our opinions, like those voiced by members of the USM set, are not necessarily representative of the on-campus community, but for what it is worth, we have felt validated by response among community members.

While our editorial staff will not be returning to the Fresh in all likelihood, The Student Printz as an institution, like the university itself, is vested in our service to the campus

community. And like the university, we have considered the practical considerations of addressing these given concerns.

Ultimately, Aramark, or its analog, is here to stay for the foreseeable future. The independent, locally-owned provider model is not viable in current economic climate, especially for a university facing regular budget cuts. Aramark funds upkeep of its facilities, and the university receives significant funding through individual sales and meal plans.

To that end, for those living on campus, do not expect the meal plan requirement to change. The university could compensate for dropping the requirement by shifting laterally to require certain students demographics, such as all freshman, to live on campus.

Yet, due to the predictable backlash from such a change, we doubt that will be chosen as an alternative.

To the credit of Eagle Dining and the university, Eagle Dining possesses an excellent track record in terms of health inspections, and the two parties have been working to improve the USM dining experience well before Harrell’s blog post.

As in prior semesters, Eagle Dining will be modifying food stations and adding new menu items to the Fresh to reflect the expressed desires of students for next semester. Additionally, Eagle Dining will extend hours of operation for a trial period, which will result in a permanent change if successful.

The Student Printz as an institution, like the university itself, is vested in our service to the campus community.

In regard to the Fresh staff, considering the noncompetitive, seasonal nature of the service positions, which filled from a small local employment pool and characterized by rotating hours and regular turnover, we understand that the Fresh’s service is less than perfect.

After all, the Fresh staff are people, who have their good

days and bad and who are paid in line with industry standard, which is not a lot. In fact, they are generally paid the minimum.

However, as representatives of Eagle Dining and as food service providers, any issues with service, food preparation or food quality should be documented and reported.

Beyond its preparation, the intrinsic quality of food provided is subject to the less than desirable domestic market for large-scale food service operations, the corporate-level purchasing practices of Aramark and consumer expectations.

Compared to the peer countries, domestic consumers spend a smaller percentage of their income on food and generally have poorer eating habits.

Reportedly, one of the most commonly requested menu additions for the Fresh was Southern cooking, which does not connote health-oriented diets as much as a desire for tastier options.

Next semester, Fresh visitors can expect to see an improvement on both fronts: a more prominent health section and a Southern cooking station.

According to the university, the recently publicized criticism

of Eagle Dining did little to affect established plans to improve the Fresh. However, the criticism is characteristic of a component essential to improving Fresh Food patrons’ experiences — feedback.

As a result of the criticism, dialogues between the SGA, the university and Eagle Dining have opened. Eagle Dining needs consumer input, especially specific suggestions and complaints, to inform changes. USM needs feedback to inform any changes the community believes should be pursued in the negotiation of the Aramark contract, which will be up for renewal February 2017.

Fresh patrons can see change by holding USM and Eagle Dining accountable. So, we hope those of you who visit the Fresh will keep doing what you are doing. Keep reporting your complaints, namely to Eagle Dining General Manager Gavin Moon, who invites your feedback. No sweeping changes will make campus dining magically wonderful, unfortunately. But the Eagle Dining experience can definitely be improved, and patrons can better it.

“Traditionally, white organizations in Greek Life don’t show a strong brotherhood [or] sisterhood like NPHC organizations do,” he said. “They also seem more socially oriented as opposed to scholarship and community service. NPHC is also a lifetime commitment and not just a collegiate experience. It doesn’t end.”

As a member of the Interfraternal Council here at Southern Miss, I felt the need to address such a statement.

The IFC and CPC councils use their values and goals to create commitment to service, social awareness and above all promote equal opportunity for everyone.

Currently, I serve as the vice president of philanthropy and service for all nine IFC chapters here at Southern Miss and have been voted onto the executive board among predominantly white voters.

It has opened my eyes to more than I could imagine.

Although we are a social fraternity, we cultivate ourselves to be the best that we can be at whatever we set our hands too.

With my own eyes I have seen IFC chapters raise over $30,000 for their charity in one weekend and break their necks raising awareness for their causes.

We don’t walk a mile in high heels for giggles nor do we risk our lives cheerleading, shaking it in on stage in front of everyone in short-shorts, staying up for 24 hours to ride a bike and sing Christmas songs to more than a thousand people all for sick children.

Not to mention our IFC council here at Southern Miss is one of the best in our region winning seven out of the 12 awards at the South Eastern Interfraternal Conference.

Alongside that, our CPC council raises thousands and thousands of dollars for their charities and host majority of the philanthropic events on our campus, and work tireless to make cupcakes, pancakes, lemonade and milkshakes with their bare hands.

Speaking of that, we are working tirelessly to have a joint community event, but due to the busy calendar of philanthropic events from all councils it makes it very hard to do so.

As an executive board member on the IFC council we strive very hard to keep close relations with all councils including the NPHC Council.

I’m appalled at the fact that people on our campus associate us with just having parties when we by far have some of the highest GPAs on campus, Honor College students, National Merits Scholars, and I could go on for days.

CPC and IFC has shown me more love than I could ever imagine. Ye,s there are still racial issues today, but I think if we stop talking about it and make a change, we could change the way people think about race and Greek Life. Our council believes that if you show yourself willing to work hard and be fruitful to the strong ideals of our chapter and uphold our longstanding of excellence, you’ll more than likely join your sorority of choosing.

Why yes, each council is written for certain colors, I can strongly argue that our Greek system accepts all.

There is really a Greek letter for everyone, but it’s not about the letters, it’s about the long lasting brotherhood and commitment to service.

This is not just a “college experience.” It is a lifelong commitment. The memories that we create and share with each other can not be compared to the level of another council

because we all share something different but what brings us together as members of the Greek system is our love for our letters.

I think things are changing fast and there is something new brought to the table everyday – we learn from each other and I respect everyone, and I respect what they stand for.

If we want to see change, we have to stop complaining about it and work to fix it and I am a firm believer that we can.

George, Roberts to address graduates at spring 2016 commencements David Tisdale Southern Miss Now

Jeffrey George, a twoterm University of Southern Mississippi Student Government Association president, and Hannah Roberts, the Miss America runner-up in 2015, will give the university’s spring commencement addresses May 13 and 14, respectively.

Graduation ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 13 at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus, and a 10 a.m. ceremony will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi Saturday, May 14.

Approximately 1,800 students are earning degrees from the university this semester.

A native of Covington, La., George will graduate May 13 with a bachelor of arts in political science. He is only the second two-term SGA president at USM in the last 50 years, and was the first student representative to serve as a member of the University’s Executive Cabinet.

He has been inducted into the Southern Miss Student Hall of Fame and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. In 2015, he was voted president of the State Institutions of Higher Learning Student Body President’s Council.

from Southern Miss.

Wynde Fitts, USM’s associate dean of students and advisor to the Student Government Association, has witnessed George’s Roberts’ achievements up close and believes they’re outstanding choices as commencement speakers.

“What a unique opportunity it will be to have Hannah share the story of her journey as Miss Mississippi. She is such a remarkable young woman who has accomplished so much at such a young age,” Fitts said.

“Her personal story is inspiring, and I’m glad she will get the chance to share it with our Southern Miss family on the Gulf Coast.

“And Jeffrey is an inspiring young man not because of all the accolades he’s received, but the way in which he has earned them. His determination and hard work have paid off and his optimism about the future of this institution is infectious. He loves Southern Miss passionately, and it shows in all he does.”

Amy Rosonet, director of the USM Speech Pathology Clinic, will serve as the president of the Mississippi Speech Language Hearing Association beginning in 2018.

Edward Goshorn, chair of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, said he is confident Rosonet will serve MSLHA well in as its president.

The Department of Art and Design hosted the opening reception to the 2016 Senior Show in Painting, Drawing and Sculpture May 4.

The show featured the work of Southern Miss seniors Amanda Kleinhans, Magen Pierce and Michelle Wenzler in the Gallery of Art and Design located in the George Hurst Building.

Sculpture major and art history minor Kleinhans said the major theme of her showcase “Chimera” was growth and decay.

“The body of work allowed me the opportunity to pick up the pieces of my decay and create some creatures that would live in this new world that’s being rebuilt,” Kleinhans said.

Kleinhans said she incorporates elements such as bones, stoneware, plaster wrap, plaster, cast iron, steel, wood, india ink, spray paint, sinew and moss in her work.

“By choosing materials that are organic and needed little, if any, treatment, the viewer gets to experience some of these materials in their raw states,” Kleinhans said.

“I think it makes the pieces slightly more relatable and realistic. When we can look at something and recognize similar items that we also possess — skulls, bones, sinew — it makes it easier to relate to what we’re looking at and place ourselves among them.”

Painting and drawing major Pierce said her project, titled “Echoing into the Void,” focused on charcoal drawings and paintings that share a theme of circular forms.

“The central theme of my work also revolves around dense to sparse contrast,” Pierce said. “In other words, it’s about having these circular forms floating up at the top of the picture plane then fading away into a void or the sparse area.

“These circular forms for me represent cycles throughout life.

Life is made up of cycles that bring on strong change then fade away into nothing, but whether good or bad, growth is achieved.”

In her artist statement, Pierce said creating these forms was a way for her to be spiritually connected with herself and the world around her.

“I think that the spiritual part for me is the process of making the work, but also in the fact that once I have created it, the experience doesn’t just belong to me,” Pierce said. “I hope that visually it allows people to experience what I felt making the work. I think another part of the spiritual element comes from the fact that the circular forms itself represents a constant flow or cycle of energy throughout everything.”

Sculpture major Wenzler said her showcase titled “Towering Forms” was inspired by the wheel by which she produces her work.

“It’s kind of like my get away from the world,” Wenzler said. “I can throw myself into the spinning clay on the wheel, and it brings me to a meditative state.

“Everything around me just kind of melts away, and the only thing that’s important at the time is the clay and what I’m trying to make it [become]. Throughout my career at USM, I’ve been trying to push myself to go larger and do something different — manipulate the form.”

Wenzler said she chose earth tones to reflect the material and keep it earthy.

“It’s a personal preference,” Wenzler said. “I do love earth tones.

Clay — it’s from earth, and I wanted to keep with the material. I just like the natural colors that we find in our world.”

Wenzler said she started out this semester with just lumps of clay.

“Now the [works] are standing tall and beautiful,” Wenzler said. “It was great and I feel just on cloud nine, really — I’m just super happy, super excited and proud of myself. I’m a perfectionist at heart. I’ve always tried to challenge myself not to keep it symmetrical — not to keep it my definition of perfection and give it something new and character.”

Nursing faculty, students volunteer at Fellowship Health Clinic Southern Miss Now The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing faculty and students are making a positive difference in the Hattiesburg community by volunteering at The Fellowship Health Clinic. In their most recent efforts, Dr. Elizabeth Tinnon and USM College of Nursing students were able to assist the clinic in the triage of patients and by working in the lab.

Since The Fellowship Health Clinic opened its doors in January 2016, The College of Nursing has worked with The Fellowship Health Clinic to provide the Hattiesburg community with quality healthcare services which are free for patients.

“As a professor, one of the most humbling things to see is how students walk away from volunteering at the Fellowship Health Clinic completely changed,” said Dr. Elizabeth Tinnon, assistant professor for The Department of Collaborative Nursing Care.

“Our students do not often realize the poverty level in our own community and how poverty affects a person’s

health, in regards to level of wellness, ability to purchase medications, and access to health information.

“Volunteering while in nursing school is a great way for our students to pull together the knowledge learned in the classroom and put it to use in practice.”

Amanda Achary, of Mandeville, La., a secondsemester nursing student, said volunteering at The Fellowship Health Clinic has been her favorite clinical experience so far. “I get to volunteer in the pharmacy, interview patients, learn how to assess patients under nursing supervisor, and I get to interact with members of my community,” said Achary.

“I believe volunteering will help me to be a better nurse because in the classroom I learn the facts and I hear examples of people who are impoverished, but it becomes reality for me when I get to help the people in the community one-on-one,” Achary said. “Dr. Tinnon has made me realize the importance of what nurses can do for the community.”

competency of our students in understanding the community needs, and will enhance the coordination of care resulting in better health outcomes.”

At present, approximately 21 percent of Hattiesburgarea residents do not have health coverage, according

to 2014 data from the Mississippi Department of Health.

City, community send fallen officers’ families to memorial Lindsay Adkisson Printz Reporter

The Hattiesburg City Council recently adopted a resolution to sponsor a trip for the families of fallen Hattiesburg police officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate to attend the engraving of the officers’ names on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial during National Police Week, May 15-21.

The purpose of this week is to honor the service and sacrifice of officers killed in the line of duty.

Lt. Jon Traxler of the Hattiesburg Police Department said this will give families of the fallen an opportunity to see how the country as a whole feels about the loss of their loved ones as well as provide them with information and assistance to cope with their loss.

“I do not feel there will ever be enough to be able to replace a family member, whether it is a spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, son or daughter,” Traxler said. “It is definitely a great step in a way that helps them with the coping of the issues that have come from the incident.

“And even the co-workers of the fallen fall into that extended

family of the fallen also.”

According to the resolution, the mayor and Hattiesburg City Council wish “to take this opportunity to advertise and promote the City of Hattiesburg and its municipal resources, particularly these heroes of the Hattiesburg Police Department” by helping fund certain family members so

they can experience this honoring ceremony.

According to the resolution, it is “one that promotes the city’s resources and advances its best interests.”

Traxler said other officers are inspired to continue to fulfill their duties because National Police Week shows the support of the cities and communities

in this country and helps the officers continue to be strong enough to leave their families each night to protect the lives of strangers.

“Like other emergency responding jobs we never know what the next call will be but we know it is our job to be there for those who need us every day,” Traxler said.

The expenditure, however, cannot exceed $6,000 each to both families for reimbursement of traveling expenses.

The funds are to be reimbursed in conformity with Mississippi statute and city travel policies.

Deen and Tate were murdered on the scene of a burglary call on May 19, 2015, which was the first time in over 50 years that the Hattiesburg Police Department lost two officers.

This event provoked sadness throughout the community of Hattiesburg and the state.

The condolences the families received were many, and the officers’ deaths drew awareness to the sacrifice police make across the nation.

Following their deaths, members of the local community gathered to start numerous initiatives to help the families, seeking to provide financial and emotional support.

According to Traxler, ratification of the April 19 resolution reflects this aim.

Traxler said it means a great deal to the Police Department because “it shows the officers how much our Mayor and City Council stands behind them and their families” and it exemplifies the overall appreciation from the Hattiesburg community.

Four unimmunized Mississippi residents exposed to measles in Shelby County, Tennessee are under quarantine by the Mississippi Department of Health, according to a report released by the department on May 2.

The outbreak resulted in six cases of measles in Tennessee last month. There have been no cases confirmed in Mississippi, but MSDH will continue to monitor the four individuals under strict supervision.

According to Liz Sharlot, director of communications at the Mississippi State Department of Health, it is impossible to predict the severity of the outbreak and how it will affect Mississippians.

“What you can do it focus on the fact that here in Mississippi, we have the strongest immunization laws,” Sharlot said. “[We have] one of the strongest in the country.

“We haven’t had a measles case here since 1992, and that’s why we encourage everybody to always remain up to date on their vaccinations so that if there is a [measles] case, being up to date on [your] vaccinations will prevent an outbreak.”

According to the National Vaccine Information Center, Mississippi school entry immunization requirements include vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella for all children entering a Mississippi school at any grade level.

State Department of Health recommends two doses of measles-containing vaccine for all first-time entrants to member institutions of the Mississippi university system.

“The vaccine is very effective,” Sharlot said. “It’s 99 percent effective. At this point, what we want to tell Mississippians is that these vaccinations are important and [can] help stop the spread of disease. People don’t understand the importance of vaccines, but [measles] is knocking on our backdoor right now, and people need to take notice.”

According to the press release, the exposed individuals are currently under home quarantine and physician supervision.

Measles is a Class 1A condition that requires notification to

the MSDH within 24 hours of knowledge or suspicion.

State epidemiologist Thomas Dobbs said it is important to remain up to date on vaccinations.

“Measles is literally knocking on our back door,” he said in the press release. “This is a highly contagious, airborne disease and is easily spread from person to person. Unvaccinated individuals are highly susceptible to infection.

This is a potentially deadly virus — infants and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of measles generally appear about seven to 14 days after a person is infected and include high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.

The press release said people can contract the illness up to 21 days after exposure.

According to CDC statistics, as many as one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, which is the most common cause of death from measles in young children. One child out of every 1,000 who gets measles will experience swelling of the brain that can lead to convulsions and result in deafness or intellectual disability.

Additionally, for every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it.

“Do they need to worry? No,” said Sharlot. “Do they need to get their vaccines? Yes.” The Moffitt Health Clinic at The University of Southern Mississippi offers an MMR vaccine for $70.

Covington County currently prepares to hold its 27th Annual Okatoma Festival in Collins on May 7.

The festival is a themed event that will feature and honor current Miss Mississippi titleholder, Hannah Roberts.

The theme of this year’s event is “Home Sweet Home,” nodding to the fact that Roberts is a Collins native.

Roberts, previously crowned Miss University of Southern Mississippi and placed first runner up to Miss America in Atlantic City, will be speaking at the event and promoting her national platform “Pages of Love.”

“Hannah is an outstanding role model and has positively impacted our community in so many ways. There was no question of the doubt that we would honor her at this year’s festival,” said Marie Shoemake, executive director at the Covington County Chamber of Commerce. (check the capitalization for me, please) The two stages at the event will feature live musical performances from artists such as Travis Clark, Hattiesburg’s very own 6550’s and Rachele Lynae.

The festival begins at 8 A.M. with a 5K run and Children’s 1 Mile Fun Run. Opening ceremonies will follow the run with the Chamber of Commerce President welcoming the event.

After opening ceremonies, there will be anointed vessels and an introduction of Mississippi Scholars. Following the introduction, the traditional Okatoma Festival Parade will take place and feature the Okatoma Festival Queens and elected officials. Roberts will serve as the Grand Marshal.

The festival expects more than 200 arts, crafts and food vendors as well as dozens of musicians throughout the day.

“This is an opportunity for everyone in our county to showcase what they do during the year,” said Shoemake. “It is such a family oriented event and an amazing celebration.”

Aside from live entertainment and vendors, the event will also include a health fair, quilt exhibit, art display, children’s park, fair rides, rubber duck race and a golf tournament.

The Cowboy Blues Band will hold its traditional street show to close out the festival around 10 p.m.

In an article published on April 28, The Student Printz made the mistake of referring to people with disabilities as “disabled people,” using the adjective “disabled” before mentioning the person.

The erroneous reference sparked feedback from sources interviewed for the article. The headline and aspects of the article have since been changed. The input received led the Printz to expand on the topic of peoplefirst linguistics.

“The reason I reached out is people-first language is still very common in the disability world,” said Jerry Alliston, community education director at the Institute of Disability Studies. “There are a lot of people with disabilities who don’t use first people language, but in our state the language is very popular.”

Taylor Carley is the selfadvocate coordinator for IDS and was featured in the graduation project article as a speaker at the graduation who lives with disabilities.

“Taylor didn’t like that,” Alliston said. “And when you use terms like ‘suffers,’ it can be offensive. Taylor is actually proud of his disability. He is a good self-advocate.”

According to the Association for the Rights of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities, people with disabilities are referred to as just that: people.

They are moms, dads, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends, neighbors, coworkers,

students and teachers. Nearly 54 million Americans, one out of every five people, have a disability, according to the ARC website.

“[People with disabilities’] contributions enrich our communities and society as they live, work and share their lives,” ARC says via its website. “People with disabilities constitute our nation’s largest minority group, which is simultaneously the most inclusive and the most diverse.

Everyone is represented: of all genders, all ages, all religions, all socioeconomic levels and all ethnic backgrounds. The disability community is the only minority group that anyone can join at any time.”

How society refers to those with disabilities can influence its views about them. Words can have heavy meanings, and descriptors used in a negative context can emphasize ignorance.

According to ARC, when people describe people by their labels of medical diagnoses, they

are devalued and disrespected as individuals.

“In contrast, using thoughtful terminology can foster positive attitudes about persons with disabilities,” ARC says.

As steps toward improving the way people communicate with and about those with disabilities, “people-first language” was created. This objective way of speaking stresses the person first instead of the disability. The disability is removed from being the primary factor in defining a person. The person is mentioned first, then the disability, and this way prevents people from being offended and removes generalizations and stereotypes.

“Our words and the meanings we attach to them create attitudes, drive social policies and laws, influence our feelings and decisions, and affect people’s daily lives and more,” ARC says. “How we use them makes a`difference. people-first language puts the person before the disability, and describes what a person has, not who a person is. Using a diagnosis as a defining characteristic reflects prejudice, and also robs the person of the opportunity to define him/herself.”

Throughout history, people with disabilities have been referred to as victims, people to be pitied, charity cases, and heroes defeating misfortune. The media is a major cause of these stereotypes that underestimate the abilities of people with disabilities.

Commercials use heartfelt stories with desolate connotations to emphasize stereotypes.

Society has made strides toward changing the viewpoints on

people with disabilities through activism, more media coverage and by spreading awareness and knowledge and creating laws. This activism includes many campaigns on the national level. The IDS at Southern Miss sponsored a webinar a few years ago directed toward the media on how to use people-first language.

People continue to promote knowledge and respect in regards to individuals with disabilities, emphasizing that they are active citizens and benefiters of society from the workplace to home environments.

Alliston said some people with disabilities are okay with not using that terminology.

“It goes to the person,” Alliston said. “If they truly like people first language they don’t want to be. Always just ask a person.”

preference of being referred to as person first or not.

“I’ve always been taught to use person first language,” she said. “I’m the type of person that doesn’t care. It doesn’t bother me, but I understand why it bothers some people.

“They want to be seen as a person first. But you can’t let things like that bother you. There are more important things in the world than ways of language.”

“From an advocate perspective, the disability is part of who they are and they should be proud of that,” Alliston said.

He said a person with disabilities is a person first and the same case persists for a person with a health issue, such as a person with cancer.

“People with disabilities are viewed just like everyone else,” he said. “We focus on abilities not disabilities. A lot of people discuss openly their disabilities because they are proud.”

Catching the picture-perfect Milky Way Afnan Beauti Copy Editor

An elaborately planned 2 a.m. trip to Mississippi’s mini Grand Canyon, Red Bluff, turned into a photo shoot of the Milky Way, which my colleagues and I could see with our bare eyes. Standing in amazement under the dark blanket we call the night sky on April 9, the three of us could not stop looking up at the seemingly trillions of stars glimmering above us.

After allowing our eyes to adapt to the darkness, we pulled out our iPhones, which was pointless because a phone camera could not do the scene good. We also were not fanatic enough to bring a telescope. Instead, photographer Fadi Shahin used a Canon 1Dx that the Student Printz adviser Chuck Cook loaned him. We scanned our pitch-black surroundings after staring at the constellations for a solid 10 minutes. Planning for the trip even went as far as me picking out the perfect pair of galaxy-print pajamas to wear.

This star gazing experience was one of a kind, the first time for the three of us. The night was meticulously planned. In fair weather and under clear skies, Fadi searched and waited for the perfect time and place

to catch the Milky Way. The light of the moon reduces the view of the intensity of the surrounding stars. You would not think stargazing of this degree would be accessible in Mississippi, but it actually is anywhere.

Executive director of the Tucson-based International DarkSky Association Bob Parks said as civilization spreads, we’re losing the ability to see the stars. Viewing conditions ideal to see the Milky Way Galaxy from Earth must meet a set of requirements. One of the most breathtaking space sights we can see with our naked eyes, Milky Way is the dimly glowing milky band that curves across the dark sky attracts thousands of nature enthusiasts every year. To view the Milky Way Galaxy with the naked eye, my posse and I followed a few tips.

According You Can See the Milky Way, a website dedicated to helping you do just that, a dark clear night sky with no moonlight is optimal for the best view of the Milky Way galaxy. An area with no city lights or other sources of light pollution is highly recommended, so we needed to travel far from the city life to a rural area. In our case, we needed to travel to Red Bluff in Foxworth, about 45 minutes away from Hattiesburg.

Using binoculars or a telescope allows the viewing of other galaxies, nebulae and comets.

Out of the many shooting stars we spotted, we managed to catch a few snapshots of them.

Due to the nebula and dust clouds, we can’t see the center of the Milky Way in visible light at any time. The Milky Way during the summer is brighter in the Northern Hemisphere. Fadi was so excited that he began his Facebook post featuring his picture of himself looking at the Milky Way with “Guuuuuuuuuuys, I finally did it! I captured the Milky Way!” His post received much love from family and friends with a combination of over 150 likes, loves and shares.

Junior graphic design major Christopher Franklin has never been to a dark sky park but is interested in stargazing.

“I’m not making this up, but there are times at night where I just like to get away from the city and stare at the night sky,” he said.

“It reminds me of when I use to do it when I was a kid growing up in the country, away from the city lights. The light pollution from the city is far too much to even be able to enjoy being in the moment, but there are those nights where I drive 40 miles out of city just to

lay on the roof of my car and stare into the night sky. It’s one of my ways to find peace.”

The Death Valley National Park is the world’s largest International Dark Sky Park and is located in the California and Nevada desert about two hours away from Las Vegas. Night sky tourists visit the 3 million acre destination year round. Death Valley offers “Star Wars” fans an opportunity to be in the presence of theatrical history.

Scenes of the original trilogy were filmed at the park.

“Death Valley is a place to gaze in awe at the expanse of the Milky Way, follow a lunar eclipse, track a meteor shower or simply reflect on your place in the universe,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis.

The world’s driest place is Chile’s Atacama Desert. Tourists visit the desert to view the night sky, as it features some of the best stargazing conditions in the world. The never-ending landscape and remote location of the desert allow for such ideal stargazing conditions.

There are numerous spots to stargaze in America such as Big Bend National Park in Southwest Texas, Cedar Breaks National Monument in Southwest Utah and Cherry Springs State Park in

Northwest Pennsylvania. Locally, however, enthusiasts and the curious can view a vivid night sky at private observatory Penantly Creek, DeSoto National Forest and an airfield near Shuqualak, among others.

The Annual Winter Star Party is held each February on Scout Key in the Lower Florida Keys. This place is among the best places to view the detailed night sky.

More than 600 astronomers from around the world join every year for viewing of the Southern Cross and other southern constellations.

Senior photojournalism major Courtland Wells said he is planning a day to go stargazing and hopes to catch sight of the Milky Way. “My family has a farm, so out there at night, it’s really dark,” he said. “I’m all for an adventure like that. I don’t know why I would do it, honestly. I just would like adventure.”

Wells said the magnificence of the night sky attracts almost everyone.

“It is a curiosity thing,” he said.

“We’re such small beings living in an infinite number of galaxies.

Humans are curious.”

Millennials: more thoughtful than ‘thotty’ Jhaimee Bullock Assistant Designer

Every generation criticizes the next for various reasons.

The next is either too rowdy, lacks gumption or is of inferior moral character, which yielding the obligatory “back in my day” speech.

These long-winded speeches given by old timers describe an era of unmarred morale and undying love — something millennials “wouldn’t understand.”

Today’s proclaimed “heathens,” the millennial generation, are depicted as unruly, disconnected and pretentious fornicators. Those of older generations are appalled by their infamous one-nightstands, lack of commitment and endless capacity for rebounds.

Why has this generation earned a reputation for being self-centered, heartless and plain “thotty,” a term coined by millennials to describe promiscuous individuals?

Like everything else, our parents and the more seasoned individuals of our society can blame our reputation on technology.

People are more accessible than ever because of innovative communication technology, such as texting, social media and video chat.

Unlike past generations, millennials have access to almost all the fish in the sea, and we just

might like more than one out of billions.

With so many qualified options to chose from, millennials are overwhelmed and stressed by the thought of forgone options — well, at least I am.

I think I speak for the majority of millennials when I say our biggest fear related to commitment is the prospect of committing to someone and missing out on a better alternative.

Choosing the wrong one is an overwhelming prospect. In a world where determining the best option for nearly everything is just a tap away, committing to a person for all of eternity is a little scary.

According to a 2010 survey done by Peww Research Center, 44 percent of the millennial generation believe marriage is becoming obsolete. The same research shows an increasing trend in older marriage ages since the 60s. This data shouldn’t be alarming — it should be comforting.

Originally, people married very young because A) it was their only way off the farm, B) they were probably going to die very soon from plague or influenza or C) Paula got knocked up during an attempted one-night-stand and her Daddy isn’t giving Bill any other option.

With that said, I interpret the statistics above as a representation

of a highly analytical generation that refuses to settle for anything other than love. Many say marriage doesn’t mean anything anymore, but I think marriage means even more now.

Unlike past generations, many of the millennials chose to marry because they actually believe they found someone special, not because it is a societal norm. In generation where shacking up is becoming widely accepted, marriage is the ultimate proclamation of love.

If the 51 percent of marriages in 2010 were made of couples moved by the forces of love, the decline from 72 percent in 1960 doesn’t bother me one bit.

Having a life of normalcy was the ultimate goal of the Baby Boomers and Generation Xers, but millennials could care less.

We do not ignore marriage issues and resort to sleeping in separate rooms in the same home.

We aren’t unafraid of divorce and the criticism that accompanies it. We would rather be talked about and happy than miserable than socially accepted, hence the support for the LGBTQ+ community and push for cannabis.

Though we have our differences, millennials share many similarities with past generations; our lives are simply exploited through social media and degrading reality television shows like “Sixteen and

Pregnant.” Because of technology, our voices are louder, and we find a sense of community through wide-range social interaction.

In the past, premarital sex and “bastard” children were things to be ashamed of, but now millennials celebrate the road bumps in life.

Flings and the single parents they create are now becoming acceptable in our evolving, more tolerant and loving generation.

We enjoy the things in life that are #relatable. We rejoice with each other in victory and we cry with each other in defeat.

I encourage the Baby boomers and Generation Xers to take a break from their relentless critique and learn from us. We are by no

means the model generation, but we do know what love is.

Love is accepting and supporting someone through times of adversity — not judging or shaming someone into compliance.

Although we’re indecisive and shallow at times, we are not afraid to admit it. We might even tweet it, along with the meal we microwaved at 2 a.m. No matter how much our progressive ideologies are criticized, we won’t stop being authentic.

We will not stop taking selfies.

We will not stop making up words.

We will not stop innovating.

Millennial Miley Cyrus said it best, “we can’t stop.’

Optimistic about The Pessimists’ performance Jack Hammett Managing Editor

Brazilian punkers The Pessimists will invade Hattiesburg for a romp at Spice World on May 12.

The band touts a melodic, bass-heavy sound that incorporates occasional gang vocals and noise samples. In short, their songs are quick and easy to swallow, making for an exceptionally accessible listen for anyone new to the idea of punk.

“In The Beginning There Was…,” the first album in their discography, breaks genre conventions from the outset with “Robotics in Service.”

The track is 58 seconds of slow power like a semi-truck rolling through traffic. The vocal duo on guitar and bass, merely referred to as M and F on Bandcamp, voice their thoughts on the nine-to-five capitalist trappings of mundane livelihoods. The subject is nothing new to music thematically but is not one I or anyone else can readily dismiss.

Instrumentation reflects subject matter, heavy drums and bass marching steadily forward.

Things ramp up and get even more interesting at the album’s second number, which feels something like a continuation

in terms of instrumentation.

“A lot of surfers smoking crack / And old people running healthy / Let’s get rid of the summer,” M and F yell.

I can’t help but love this one. I have a soft spot for songs about hating the summertime.

Tracks “Fixed” and “Working” seem similarly conjoined, “Working” picking the nineto-five theme up again. The songs offer a darker sound than previous, which is a welcome turn.

Jump to “It’s All Ok!,” my favorite Pessimists track at present. The track’s optimism, though nuanced, adds a certain anthemic brilliance to the album: “To all the crap that they threw at me / That’s fine, I’ve blocked my feelings / I close my eyes and I can’t sleep / 100 percent bullshit free.” Listeners get a taste of phaser layered over the guitar, which adds to the album’s charming eccentricity.

Met Gala: The good, the bad, the ugly Jonathan Urbina Entertainment Editor

The Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the biggest fashion event of the year. Think prom for celebrities, where tickets are roughly $30,000 a person and Anna Wintour is the prom queen. With the theme of “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology,” New York City became a stage for musicians, actresses and models to play dress up for a night in their best interpretation of the perfect tech-forward ensemble. Some nailed it and some missed the bill. Below is the best and the worst of the year most expensive red carpet looks: MOST TALKED ABOUT: Beyoncé in Givenchy Queen Bey is known for being the talk of the town (or, well, the universe), but on Met Gala night, her Givenchy latex gown is what kept her beehive buzzing. The dress, a body hugging flesh toned number, reminded her fans of—wait for—human skin (more specifically, Becky’s skin). As strange as it all sounds, this theory completely checks out.

In Beyoncé’s visual album, “Lemonade,” she refers to Becky saying, “I can wear her skin over mine.” Creepy? Yes, but it made Beyoncé’s gown the center of all Met Gala conversations. As an added bonus, ‘Yonce was the last to arrive to the star packed event, shutting down the carpet and walking solo – now that is how you make an entrance.

MOST VERSATILE: Emma Watson in Calvin Klein Attire for the Met Gala usually consists of either a gown or tux, but for Watson it consists of both. The actress kept her look playful by wearing loose tuxedo pants under a billowing Calvin Klein skirt. Once inside, the skirt came off for easier access to the food, easier access to the restroom and easier access to Beyonce (obviously). Function and fashionable.

Good thinking, Watson.

MOST COLORFUL: Solange in David LaPort Surprisingly enough, bold colors are not always the hottest trend on the red carpet.

Wearing a color takes courage and confidence. It certainly isn’t a move just anyone can pull off. So, for Solange to rock a canary yellow pleated mini with matching latex leg warmers, she gets a round of applause.

BEST OVERALL TRANSFORMATION: Karlie Kloss in Brandon Maxwell Mission: wear three dresses in one night without changing.

Consider it, “Klossed.” The supermodel arrived to the red carpet in a uber conservative creme Brandon Maxell number with a built in cape.

Once inside, Kloss shed her outer layer to reveal a skeleton on the previous dress with a lot less fabric. The model exposed practically her entire torso in the strategically fitted garment, leaving very little to the imagination.

For the after party, Kloss had one more trick up her sleeve to remix her look: scissors. The 6’1 “it” girl stood nervously as Maxwell hacked the bottom of her dress off, turning her gown into the perfect mini dress for the club. Well played, Kloss, well played.

BEST HAIR: Amanda Stenberg in Calvin Klein Known for her strong stance on cultural appropriation, the “Hunger Games” star made a powerful statement arriving to the Met Gala with her hair in a naturally curly fro. The hair-do was pushed out of her face with the help of two metal headbands that topped of her looks like a modern day crown.

MOST PREDICTABLE: Kylie Jenner in Balmain The saying “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” should be Jenner’s next tattoo. As a rookie to the event, the cosmetics mogul, played it safe by wearing a bejeweled Balmain dress in her typical silhouette. The see through dress hugged her in all the right places, but seemed to be a look already done by the reality star on previous red carpets. Perhaps it’s time to mix things up.

MOST EXPOSED: Madonna in Givenchy Not one to hold back, the 57-year-old singer has returned to her wild ways wearing practically nothing to this year’s Met Gala. Draped in Givenchy, the only thing the separated the star’s breasts from the paparazzi was tape. Her butt? Fair game.

The look, obviously not for everyone, was truly something only the Madge herself could pull off.

MOST UNPREDICTABLE: Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton Usually one to stun the crowd, Selena Gomez attended the gala in a underwhelming Louis Vuitton ensemble. She dazzled with a fresh face and rounded out her look with a simple ponytail.

The understated look wasn’t much to look at, but it can be noted as a refreshing moment in Gomez’s fashion evolution.

Obama enjoys last laughs at correspondent dinner Hiba Tahir Printz Reporter

President Obama performed his final standup routine at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night, commenting on his time in office, the press and the 2016 presidential election candidates and inspiring a slew of comments and reactions on social media.

Although campy correspondent dinner speeches have come to define Obama’s presidency, Saturday night’s routine — which began with the verse “You’re going to miss me when I’m gone” from the popular song “Cups” playing as Obama walked out — was particularly brimming with quotably hilarious moments in each category.

“It is an honor to be here at my last, and perhaps the last White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” he began. “You all look great. The end of the Republic has never looked better.”

From there, the president launched into politics and the changing times.

“Eight years ago, I said it was time to change the tone of our politics. In hindsight, I clearly should have been more specific,” he said, joking about his aged “gray, grizzled” appearance before asking security to “bar the doors” and calling out Republican leaders for rejecting his phone calls.

But it was not just Congress who had him stressed.

“Even some foreign leaders, they’ve been looking ahead, anticipating my departure,” he said.

“Last week, Prince George showed up to our meeting in his bathrobe.”

Obama then took cracks at prominent journalists in his “key staff” at the White House.

“Savannah Guthrie, she has left the White House press corps to host the ‘Today’ show,” he said.

“Norah O’Donnel left the briefing room to host ‘CBS This Morning.’

Jake Tapper left journalism to join CNN.” He then referred to “Spotlight,” a film depicting “investigative

journalists with the resources and the autonomy to chase down the truth and hold the powerful accountable,” as the “best fantasy film since ‘Star Wars.’ He acknowledged the “cheap shot” before continuing to call out Buzzfeed and The Washington Post.

From there, he brought up the 2016 elections and the unprecedented power of young voters, acknowledging that Bernie Sander’s slogan “helped his campaign catch fire among young people.”

“Hillary’s slogan has not had the same effect,” he said before an image of a boulder on a hill appeared with the slogan “Trudge up the Hill.”

“Look, I’ve said how much I admire Hillary’s toughness, her smarts, her policy chops, her experience,” Obama said. “You’ve

got to admit it though, Hillary trying to appeal to young voters is a little bit like your relative who just signed up for Facebook.

‘Dear America, did you get my poke? Is it appearing on your wall? I’m not sure I’m using this right. Love, Aunt Hillary.’ It’s not entirely persuasive.”

Obama then attacked the Republican side, noting the confusion some of his guests experienced over the invitations to the dinner.

“Guests were asked to check whether they wanted steak or fish,” he said. “But instead, a whole bunch of you wrote in Paul Ryan.

That’s not an option people.”

He went on to talk about those candidates who “aren’t polling high enough to qualify for their own joke,” such as Kasich.

To everyone’s surprise, Obama appeared to end his speech

before mentioning controversial candidate and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.

“I’m just kidding,” he said.

“You know I’m going to talk about Trump. Come on…. Although I am a little hurt that he’s not here tonight…. What could he possibly be doing instead? Is he at home eating a Trump steak, tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel?”

Obama mentioned the Republican establishment’s “incredulous” realization that Trump is “their most likely nominee.”

“But in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world,” he said. “Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan.

And there is one area where Donald’s experience could be invaluable and that’s closing Guantanamo because Trump knows a thing or two about

running waterfront properties into the ground.”

The night ended on a positive note, with Obama voicing his appreciation for his press corps.

“We’ve always shared the same goal to root our public discourse in the truth,” he said. “To open the doors of this democracy. To do whatever we can to make our country and our world more free and more just … Taking a stand on behalf of what is true does not require you shedding your objectivity.

“In fact, it is the essence of good journalism. It affirms the idea that the only way we can build consensus, the only way that we can move forward as a country, the only way we can help the world mend itself is by agreeing on a baseline of facts when it comes to the challenges that confront us all.”

Cruz’s campaign, 14 months, killed in Indiana Nicolas Kubicki Printz Reporter

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 Today, we as one people come together not to mourn a loss but instead to celebrate it. Ted Cruz’s campaign died last night after Donald Trump’s campaign delivered the killing blow in Indiana.

Regardless of whether we like the man, we have to admire his tenacity. Even after being dragged screaming into the muck, he continued to fight the unwinnable fight until the very end.

Nobody in this race was more

thoroughly disliked than Cruz, who failed to gain support from any of his fellow republicans.

“If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” said Lindsay Graham, a former Republican candidate.

After Trump made comments about Cruz’s wife, Cruz fired back on public television telling a reporter that he would not have to support Trump if he were to lose, and that he was going to take the nomination for himself.

Pride goes before the fall, as they say. We will all surely wait for what Cruz is going to say next to find out whether he will announce his support and eat his words.

The worst part for Cruz is that he has been reaching for this his entire political career. He acted with ruthless abandon and the idea that it would be worth it in the end, but at the final hour, the product of his own anti-establishment rhetoric snatched away his prize. The only thing left for him now is the fall.

I doubt that history will remember him any more than they remembered Ed Muskie, but at least he will serve as a footnote on the long list of Trump’s conquests.

However, this failed campaign teaches

a lesson to those of us watching.

If you want to beat Trump, you cannot be dragged to his level, because he will beat you every time and laugh while he does it.

Nation prepares for Trump vs. Hillary Nicolas Kubicki Printz Reporter

While the general election seems to be shaping up to be a battle of Donald Trump versus Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders still vows to fight until the end, reaping whatever benefits he may pick up along the way.

Indiana was a crucial election for the GOP with Ted Cruz dropping out after a loss to Trump, who took all 51 delegates available in the state. John Kasich dropped out May 4, effectively handing the nomination to Trump. On the Democratic side, Sanders won with 52 percent of the vote, strengthening the idea that he does better in open and mixed primaries rather than closed.

While the Republican race looks like a straight shot for Trump, the fate of the Democratic nomination still technically remains up in the air.

While still mathematically possibly, the win margins will have to be higher than ever in order to achieve the goal.

In the Democratic race, the delegates are awarded proportionally, meaning Sanders took 43 elected delegates to Clinton’s 37. This brings the difference in pledged delegates to 321. According to FiveThirtyEight, Clinton is exceeding expectations on her path to the nomination while Sanders is behind by 8 percent.

The next Democratic primary will be May 7 in the territory of Guam. According to Associated Press, seven unpledged delegates are up for grabs, and FiveThirtyEight said that either candidate will need to get at least 3.5 delegates to stay on track.

Then the next will be on May 10 in West Virginia, a mixed primary with 29 available delegates on the Democratic side and 34 for the GOP. FiveThirtyEight said that for Sanders to stay on track, he must win 17 delegates or beat Clinton heavily in order to make up for losses in Maryland.

The Republicans will also have a closed primary in Nebraska with 36 delegates available.

Nebraska and West Virginia are winner-take-all, which means that unless Kasich can mount a substantial offense, Trump will likely win all delegates.

May 17 will see Democrats vote in Kentucky, and Oregon will vote for both parties. These primaries are closed, with 55 delegates available for the Democrats in Kentucky and 61 in Oregon. The GOP will see 25 unbound delegates awarded proportionally, which could mean good news for Kasich, though it is still a longshot.

Once again, if Sanders wishes to remain mathematically viable, he will have to have a strong victory in both states.

The final primary in May will be for the Republicans on May 24 in Washington state. The delegates

will be awarded proportionally, provided a candidate reaches above 20 percent. Kasich will need to outperform all benchmarks in order to meet this, provided his candidacy has not changed by this point.

June 4 will see the Virgin Islands caucus for their democratic candidates, an area where Sanders has historically shined. Sanders seems to do better than Clinton in caucus states as well, and the size of the population could easily see this contest turn one way or the other. Twelve delegates will be awarded proportionally, with 3 superdelegates included. On June 5, Puerto Rico will also caucus with 67 delegates available.

The “last call” in the republican race will be on June 7, with 294 bound delegates available.

California and New Jersey will hold mixed primaries, New Mexico and South Dakota will be closed and Montana will be open.

All of these are winner-take-all except for New Mexico, which awards delegates proportionally.

If Kasich was still running, this would have been a prime opportunity to take delegates from Trump. However, it remains to be seen whether Cruz and Kasich will remain on the ballots despite their absence from the campaign trail. If a candidate is no longer running but still on the ballot due to a suspended campaign, their votes do not technically count.

June 7 will see the last primary for the Democrats as well, with New Mexico and South Dakota holding closed elections offering 54 delegates, and North Dakota and Washington D.C. in a closed caucus offering 38. New Jersey and California will be mixed, offering 601 delegates and Montana will be open, offering 21 delegates. All in all, there will be a total of 714 delegates available.

Though Sanders is a longshot, he said he will continue on to the conventions. According to his campaign, his strategy now relies on contesting the convention and making an argument to the superdelegates to vote along their constituent votes. For example, in states like Vermont, Sanders won with such a majority that Clinton was non-viable, meaning she would receive no elected delegates. However, due to the superdelegate system, she still received unelected delegates. Sanders hopes to be able to convince these delegates to vote according to the will of the people rather than their original alignment.

From now until June 7, we can expect Trump and Clinton to name potential running mates, which could have a serious effect on their polling numbers.

While there are other contests between now and then, all eyes have turned toward California, the final proving ground of this year’s primary elections.

Former Golden Eagles hope to fill roster spots in NFL

So the question can be asked.

Which former Golden Eagle will receive the most playing time, granted that they make the team?

The prospect with the most uphill battle to climb will in all likelihood Jalen Richard. The running back was a bruiser at Southern Miss while he played and ran for 1,113 yards on 185 attempts last season. Richard’s game consists of running through contact, not so much running away from defenders in the open field.

The problem with that is Richard has a slightly small from for the NFL. Richard is listed at five-feet eight inches, and also coming in at 210 pounds. He may be too small for his type of playing style in the league where linebackers and safeties are the same weight and will pack a bigger punch in a bigger frame.

The next Golden Eagle may not even make the field this season, although you would not think that if you were to watch his highlights against Louisiana Tech and Washington.

The Southern Miss football program had two players drafted in the NFL Draft on April 30. Former wide receiver Michael Thomas and former cornerback Kalan Reed were drafted with the 206th and 253rd pick by the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans, respectively.

But these USM headliners were not the only Golden Eagles to be given a chance to showcase their skills in the NFL. Former Golden Eagles running back Jalen Richard signed a free agent tender with the Oakland Raiders. Also, former offensive linemen, Rashod Hill and Norman Price, were signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.

Seeing five Golden Eagles get their shots in the league speaks volumes to the talent down in Hattiesburg. But as most people may realize if they look closely, not every undrafted free agent that signs a contract will be on the team by the beginning of the season. In addition, not every player

Mike Thomas, in my opinion, may catch 10 passes this year. With Jared Goff coming in to be the proverbial “face of the franchise” in Los Angeles, the organization and the fans will be looking for immediate production from the current No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

What that means for Thomas is that he will most likely not see the field. This does not mean that he will not make the practice squad or even the 53-man roster on any given Sunday, but he will most likely be relegated to the practice squad.

On the Rams roster currently, there is a plethora number of receivers — 12 to be exact. This is before including fourth round draft pick Pharaoh Cooper of South Carolina and Thomas.

Not to say that Thomas will not be able to crack the roster. But he has one of the most difficult chances on paper to get significant playing time.

He will not be the fastest or the tallest receiver heading into training camp.

He may not even have the most sure hands on the roster either.

Thomas will be on the roster in

2016. But to think of him getting significant playing time, let alone starting for the team, will be a long shot in his rookie season.

Norman Price is facing a decent shot at making the roster in San Francisco. Although not drafted, Price is currently dealing with a roster that has more shallow depth at offensive tackle position. There are only six offensive tackles currently on the roster. With long arms and a sturdy frame, Price may come as a surprise to some on the West Coast.

Although he may not see the field this season, it is not beyond the realm of comprehension that Price could be a staple on the practice squad.

The aforementioned “Mr. Irrelevant” will quickly have his name recognized in NFL circles sooner than later.

Kalan Reed will come into training camp as one of 10 cornerbacks on the roster. He will not be able to shut down receivers on his first day due to a lack of technique on some plays last year. But, what Reed has is unconventional athleticism and an “it” factor that some players just do

not have.

Looking back at the play Reed made against Texas State on fourthand-goal from the two yard line is exactly the plays that he will have to make to get noticed. Reed will have to show all of the little things it will take to get time on the field. I think he will prove that. Maybe not this year, but in the years to come as he gets bigger and smarter on the field.

Rashod Hill has a solid chance to make the roster in Jacksonville primarily due to depth issues. There are only seven offensive tackles listed on the active roster after the draft, so Hill will get his chance to showcase his skills on the field. Without much depth in front of him, he may get at least a spot on the practice squad in Jacksonville.

Hill was one of the more sturdier players on the Golden Eagles roster last season. He rarely missed games during his career, but occasionally had an untimely injury every so often. If Hill can avoid the injury bug altogether in his rookie showing, he may warrant playing time early in his career.

The Golden Eagles will enter the 2016 football season with a slew of new faces on the team, headlined by a new coach in Jay Hopson. Names such as Nick Mullens, Ito Smith and Cameron Tom can be written in pen as starters after a successful year in 2015. But almost half of the depth chart faces uncertainty with a new staff coming in to evaluate the players.

The most questionable spots on the team heading into the new season will be the linebacking corps, the tight ends group and the receiving core behind D.J. Thompson as the presumptive No. 1 receiver. Anyone from Isaiah Jones from East Mississippi to redshirt junior Marquise Ricard, the No. 2 receiving spot can go to anyone. Also, the depth among the offensive line and running back rotation is shallow to say the least due to injuries.

On the depth chart, spring injuries were taken into account as seen by the exclusion of players such as Tez Parks, George Payne and Taylor Marini.

Incoming players such as Wyatt Richthofen and Lorenzo Dantzler will warrant playing time as incoming freshman. Wil Freeman, a redshirt senior, is making the transition between offensive and defensive lines. So his spot is up for grabs also.

Blevins leaves Southern Miss Julius Kizzee Sports Editor

Numerous reports have confirmed that junior forward Keljin Blevins will be leaving the basketball program.

Blevins averaged 5.8 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in turnovers with 49 behind Khari Price’s 61 turnovers on the season.

His absence will leave a void in the starting lineup for upcoming season. Blevins started 24 out of the 29 games that he played in. Although he did not provide statistical production on the stat sheet, Blevins did showcase quality defense and a willingness to be versatile in coach Doc Sadler’s defensive scheme.

The Golden Eagles can look to Michael Ramey primarily to push for the starting position in the lineup. Ramey averaged 5.5 ppg and he also shot .381 percent from three-point range.

His range from beyond the arch could spread out the offense and provide more spacing for players looking to drive the ball into the lane in Sadler’s pickand-roll offense.

Blevins’ leave will not be the first leave for the Golden Eagles this offseason. Redshirt senior Norville Carey is currently being reported to not be returning next season for Southern Miss as well. But in Carey’s case, he has not officially requested his release from the program.

Martin awaits his shot in NFL Kyle Williams Sports Reporter

With the NFL Draft concluding this Saturday, many eyebrows were raised when former Southern Miss wide receiver Casey Martin was not drafted.

With the social media buzz surrounding him in the days leading up to the draft, one could only believe that Martin would fall to a team somewhere in the late rounds. Martin has not signed an undrafted free agent contract yet but could find himself playing professional football with some NFL team before the preseason.

Martin caught 80 receptions for 925 yards last season for the Golden Eagles. With his fivefeet nine-inch frame, Martin possesses nifty qualities such as quickness and elusiveness.

On his pro day on March 24, Martin ran a 4.4 in the 40 yard dash. Also, many overlooked Martin’s strength until he bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times.

Martin is a crafty slot receiver who uses his quickness to get open in the middle of the field.

Martin’s size and talent is similar to Los Angeles Rams

slot receiver Wes Welker. Both measure in at around five feet nine inches, using that lack of height as an advantage over defenders.

With the average height of an NFL linebacker being six feet and above, both use their small frames to slip under tackles and gain a plus amount of yards after the catch.

The combination of size and speed wields fair for both as they cause many problems with those players matching up against him. Defenses have two options of either putting a tall, but slower linebacker on the quick, shifty receivers or using a speedy corner but taking the risk in other mismatches on the field.

A prime example of this is what Golden Eagle fans saw all last season with the duo of Mike Thomas and Martin. With Martin in the slot and Thomas as the wide out, many teams had to make decisions on stopping the shortyard pass with the potential of a big gain with Martin or the deep ball threat with Thomas. Many teams counted out the option of Martin’s talent and would pay the price for it. Nebraska and Texas State both saw Martin in

the end zone multiple times last season as the result.

This year’s draft included many teams not scouting the short-route receiver.

With a bountiful draft class of deep ball receivers like Laquon Treadwell, Josh Doctson, Michael Thomas and Braxton Miller, Martin’s chances of landing on

a playoff team seemed realistic.

With the top prospects being taken by teams who managed to lose more games than they won, Martin slipping to a playoff team’s practice squad was my prediction for his outcome.

Martin’s dreams of reaching the big leagues are not over yet.

I still see the talented wide out

signing with a team like Denver, Oakland, Chicago or Indianapolis before the preseason begins and competing sooner or later to crack a 53-man roster. If Martin does not land a contract before that, I can see him taking his talents to the CFL for a little while until it is his time for the NFL spotlight.
