Page crowned Miss USM Kirstie Lowery Printz Reporter Kimberly Page, a junior speech pathology major, was crowned the new Miss University of Southern Mississippi Saturday night at the Saenger Theatre.

“It was really overwhelming and you kind of have to take a double-take and say, ‘That was my name, right?’,” Page said.

“It’s really, really exciting.”

Hattiesburg residents and USM students were on hand to support the 11 contestants competing in the 69th Annual Miss USM Scholarship Pageant. During the competition, each competitor proved that this event was about much more than physical beauty.

“I think it’s really important for people to know that it encourages women to become better than they are. It encourages them to be their best selves. You learn a lot through it,” said 2013 Miss USM and junior biochemistry major Hannah Roberts.

The pageant, hosted by WDAM’s News 7 Sunrise coanchor Mike McDaniel and Miss Mississippi 2008 Christine Kozlowski, featured many competitions where the contestants had to demonstrate their elegance, intelligence, physique and mental well-being.

One of the most anticipated stages of the competition was the introduction. “My favorite part is whenever they introduce themselves, because it kind of shows their personality a little bit,” said Harley Oliver, a junior biology major.

Another highly-anticipated part of the pageant was the talent stage. Performances ranged from a three baton dance routine to an emotional rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables.”

The Spirit of Southern Mississippi Award was presented to fashion merchandising and political science double major Shequeena Brown.

When the Army ROTC program at The University of Southern Mississippi discovered it would be one of 13 programs nationwide closing by 2015, state and university officials immediately began the process of appealing the decision.

Friday morning, Gov. Phil Bryant, University President Rodney Bennett and other officials spoke at a press conference on the steps of Southern Hall describing the plan of action regarding the appeal.

In a letter addressed to John McHugh, Secretary of the Army, Bryant expressed his concern that more than half of the 13 ROTC program closures are located in the Southeastern United States.

“We will stand, we will work, we will do everything necessary to restore this great program,” Bryant said.

“I intend to do all that I can to see that this program continues,” Bennett said. “Along with Governor Bryant, we will pursue any and every avenue to appeal this decision.”

Worley said that many of the freshman and sophomore cadets would be transferring to other institutions with an ROTC program in order to continue advancing their future careers in the Army. He said some cadets may choose to leave the ROTC program entirely and may take a different route when joining the Army, while others will work to find a program and university that will suit their future military careers best.

“Our job right now is twofold: We are continuing to train and develop our juniors and seniors, and help our freshman and sophomores to finish the se-

mester first,” he said. “Alongside that, we will help them make the right decisions for their degree and their ROTC future.”

Freshman Cadet Ben Fagan said he was shocked by the decision to close the program. “... I knew I would have to adapt as the Army changes,” he said.

Fagan, a cadet receiving the 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship, said he will continue his career as a cadet by transferring to another institution with the program.

“I’m looking into transferring to Brigham Young University, Clemson or Notre Dame,” he said.

Members of the Golden Eagle Battalion not only have to accept the program’s closure, but have to work around the impact of the recent government shutdown.

shutdown began, the two Department of the Army civilian employees working at USM were furloughed, but returned to work last week, he said.

“We aren’t able to use all of our training and logistical resources. We aren’t able to use our (four) vehicles. We can’t go train at Van Hook Golf Course our local training area - so naturally this limits us some on our training,” he said.

He said the cadets, with a little creativity, are able to complete training exercises on campus that would normally be completed in a field or woodsy environment.

“Having to train on campus has made us adjust how we conduct training, especially for the MS III (junior) cadets,” said Senior Cadet Michael Carter.

“We hope the shutdown ends soon so that we can utilize other

training areas to provide even better training for our cadets.”

“Beyond the shutdown of the program, beyond the government shutdown that’s causing some restrictions on our training... The bottom line is I want the campus community and the Hattiesburg community to understand that we are doing our very best at producing qualified, smart, able-to-lead soldiers and Army leaders,” Worley said.

According to Worley, five cadets are set to be commissioned into the Army upon graduation in December, and 12 are set for commission in May 2014.

GSA hosts third annual religion panel Monicia Warner News Editor Southern Miss’ Gay Straight Alliance hosted religious leaders from campus, Hattiesburg and nearby communities as part of their “Religious, Secular and Spiritual Paths to Enlightenment” panel Thursday.

Its mission has been to bring religious and secular leaders together to foster conversation about the intersection of LGBTQ acceptance and affirmation within various faith and nonfaith communities.

The panel is now in its third year after two previously successful programs.

“There are members of our organization and friends of mine that faith is a very big part of their life and they feel excluded in other groups because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Zackari Arbogast, GSA president.

“To open up that conversation and make a safe place for them to talk about it and for others to talk about it, that’s important,” he added.

Each year the GSA has reached out to different religious and non-religious groups to fill out the panel.

“If we have [GSA] members who are also members of LGBT churches or faith groups or student ministries, we reach out to them through that,” said Jessica Piness, a GSA council member.

Included on this year’s panel were representatives from a Zen Buddhist group, Trinity Episcopalian Church, Hattiesburg Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, USM’s Secular Student Alliance and Safe Harbor Family Church in Jackson.

Each panelist shed light on how their respective denominations became inclusive to members of the LGBTQ community.

They also explained what services

were available to the community through their organizations.

Avery Hilbert, a senior public relations major, attended the panel for the first time and enjoyed the conversation.

“It was an amazing opportunity,” she said. “The members of the panel were very open and had no problem answering any question the audience proposed.”

She also plans to attend one of the panel member’s services.

“I never heard of the Unitarian Universalist [Fellowship] and I find it to be fascinating,” Hilbert said. “I definitely want to attend one of their services.”

Piness stressed the reality of how faith intersects with other aspects of people’s lives.

“Not all aspects of the [LGBTQ] community, but certain pockets of the community aren’t accepting of religion and they think that people’s lives are very complicated,” she said. “We can’t separate our sexual orientation or our gender identity from our faith or race or our socio-economic background.”

Identify the signs of abuse:

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Destiny Reynolds Printz Reporter When students think of October, many things spring to the forefront: fall weather, Halloween and breast cancer awareness. However, amid all the pink awareness signs, the holiday decorations and the general beauty of nature, a key feature of October often slips away unnoticed: Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

As college students, relationships are just another aspect of life. They come and they go, some lasting longer than others, but in each one, there is a common factor that many fail to recognize: the potential for abuse. According to the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence (MCADV), approximately one in five teens in serious relationships report physical abuse within the relationship.

One in three adolescent girls in the United States are victims of some form of abuse, be it physical, emotional or sexual.

The first step to solving the problem of abuse is to identify the signs. First, one should note that abuse is not always obvious, and it is not always physical or sexual.

Emotional abuse is a legitimate, damaging problem and is recognized by professionals nationwide as a form of domestic abuse.

When asked whether or not she would be able to spot the signs of abuse, Madeleine Lowrey said, “I would like to think so. I know a lot of the signs: isolation, super quick

commitment, super controlling, [and] bursts of anger.”

The signs are not always easy to spot. As Lowery, a vocal performance major, stated, one of the most common signs that a friend, family or co-worker may be experiencing abuse in their relationship is isolation – that is, he/ she rarely goes out without his/ her significant other, and/or is restricted from seeing others.

the significant other in question, attempts to drastically change the significant other’s personality or behaviors in order to fit pre-conceived ideals, and an overly-controlling nature towards the significant other.

Being on the outside looking in may make spotting the signs of abuse seem simple. However, when one is in an abusive relationship, it is not always to notice behaviors.

Often, those in abusive relationships make excuses about their partner’s behavior or try to ignore the abuse completely.

It is important to identify the signs of abuse early in a relationship to minimize emotional or physical damage and potentially save lives.

If it has been established that an abusive relationship is taking place, the next step is to choose a course of action.

If a friend, family member or co-worker is in an abusive relationship, it is important to express any and all concerns without appearing judgmental or blaming any party involved.

If they agree to talk it out, it is imperative that you listen to all they have to say. You should not try to pressure them into taking action, particularly if the realization of the abuse is sudden, as the feeling of pressure outside the relationship could be overwhelming and ultimately push them further from seeking help. Offering your assistance and support is always a good idea, but you should not place conditions around your support (i.e. “I’ll be there, but only if you agree to do this”), and you should not give unwarranted advice. If the abuse has escalated to the point that it is an immediate, life-threatening issue, however, then further help may need to be sought from the authorities.

Ultimately, it is the abused individual that must make the decision on how to proceed. This presents itself in the form of what is quite possibly the most difficult choice to make in any relationship: to stay or to leave. In deciding, the abused individual should first realize that any and all abuse that has taken place has not taken place through any fault of his or her own. Blame is often placed on the abused individual by themselves, and this often leads to increased vulnerability to abuse, general emotional damage and the decision to stay for improper reasons. The abused individual should mentally reinforce the idea that he or she has a high self-worth, and

Once the thought of blame has been lifted, the abused individual should consider the following if he or she is considering maintaining the relationship: Most abusers will not correct their habits, and if they do, the process is lengthy, which puts one at risk for further abuse.

When asked how she might handle abuse, Lowery replied, “I’d probably talk to someone older.

Or someone who was around who could keep said abuser away from me. Depending on how bad it got, I might get a restraining order.”

If the abused individual has decided to stay, then it is imperative that he or she forms a strong support system, consisting of friends, family, etc., that would be willing to help should an emergency arise.

The abused individual should consider seeking counseling services through local domestic violence and sexual abuse programs.

If the abused individual has decided to leave, he or she should prepare beforehand. This can be done by making note of the abuser’s “red flags” – things done or said that may cause an outburst of anger.

Unfortunately, domestic violence is a problem that plagues homes and families across the nation. The cycle of abuse is continuous with more people becoming victims every day.

It is within our power to break the cycle through awareness and support for the victims. State and national resources available for victims include: the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE; and the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence at 1.800.898.3234 (Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and 1.800.799.7233 (after hours).

Fall into new (and old) TV shows Sarah Turnage Printz Reporter

It’s that time of year to grab your friends and your popcorn and gather around the TV. Fall TV show premieres are well underway with exciting new shows and much anticipated returning shows.

The four major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX) premiered their top comedy series in mid to late September. “Modern Family,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Parks and Recreation” and “New Girl” continue to draw in large numbers and produce lots of laughs.

ABC leads the pack with producing top-notch dramas se-

ries. The break-out hit of 2012, “Scandal,” returned Oct. 3 for its third season. The political drama set in Washington D.C. continues to deliver the melodrama that leaves fans wanting more.

The highly popular show “Revenge” also premiered for its third season on ABC Sept.

29. Faith Kennedy, a senior fashion merchandising major, was looking forward to the premiere of “Revenge.”

“Season two finale left a major cliffhanger, so I could not wait for it to begin and find out what happened next,” Kennedy said.

“The third season has exceeded my expectations,” she added.

“American Horror Story: Coven” premiered on Oct. 9.

The show’s creator, Ryan Mur-

phy, tweeted that its premiere achieved the highest ratings of previous “American Horror Story” premieres.

FOX’s “Glee” premiered its fifth season on Sept. 26. But, because of the untimely death of Cory Monteith who played the musical comedy/drama’s main character, the show only premiered three episodes and will go on hiatus for a few weeks. On Oct. 10,the Monteith tribute episode premiered and it was impossible to watch without a tear or two.

The vampire craze continues with the fifth season premiere of The CW’s The “Vampire Diaries.”

The CW also premiered a spinoff of “Vampire Diaries” called “The Originals.” Magen Harvey,

a senior nursing major, tuned into both shows on Oct. 3.

“I love shows with vampires, so I was excited to watch the premiere of the spinoff,” Harvey said. “With (Vampire Diaries) winding down, I’m glad The CW prepared a new show for me and my roommates to become obsessed with,” she added.

The highest-rated new TV show is NBC’s “The Blacklist.” The drama focuses on a career criminal who partners up with the FBI. FOX also had a big hit with the premiere of “Sleepy Hollow” which puts a twist on the classic tale of Ichabod Crane.

Robin Williams returned to his TV roots in the new CBS comedy series, “The Crazy Ones.”

It’s one of the more successful

new comedies of the fall season.

But, there were quite a few misses. Rebel Wilson’s ABC’s comedy series, “Super Fun Night,” is continuously falling in the ratings. Surprisingly, NBC’s “The Michael J. Fox Show” did not meet many people’s expectations. Fox’s return to TV is not seeing the same success he had with “Spin City.”

Even more surprising, Seth MacFarlane’s new FOX comedy series, “Dads” is not doing well in the ratings.

Despite some unsuccessful starts for a few new shows, the fall season will still provide plenty of fun new comedies, new addictive thrillers and a return of some of our favorites.

Dancers use campus as their stage Chase Ladner Printz Reporter The department of dance held its first “Dance Tour Around Campus” last Friday and Saturday, starting their fall season with works by students and faculty.

After last year’s tornado destroyed the usual venue for these performances, Mannoni Hall, the dance department began hosting their events in non-traditional places. In 2012, they performed at different locations in Hattiesburg, but this year the focus was on campus with four different dances at various locations.

The tour started in front of Kennard-Washington Hall with “Beneath the Brachials” by Suanne Messer. Next, attendants were led to the front of the library for “Among these Bricks” by Casie Marsh. The audience was then led to the green area next to Johnson Science Tower to watch “Here, not far away, yet all the distance in the world” by Elizabeth Lentz. The tour ended in the Thad Cochran Center with “LOL (Looking for Love)” by Eunice Wambari.

This event is the first of four events planned for the department of dance this semester. The second event, “Mark’d in Time,” is a concert at the Thirsty Hippo on Oct. 23 and 24. The third is “Dance for Film,” at the Boardwalk Apartments movie theater on Nov. 8 and 9, and the final performance is a traditional concert on Dec. 5 -7 on campus.

“We definitely think our students are seeing the breath of modern dance choreography,” said Elizabeth Lentz, assistant professor of dance.

“I think it’s a different point of view for the audience,” said Eunice Wambari, senior dance per-

formance and dance choreography double major. “Because they aren’t sitting down waiting for a show to happen. They are actually like close up, almost in reach of the dancers.

It’s so close and personal. It’s such a different feel of what dance really is.”

Choreographers and dancers had to adjust to working in nontraditional spaces. “We’ve already had people just walking by in the middle of rehearsal,” said Brooke Baggett, senior dance education major and one of the tour’s dancers. “They’d just walk through the site while we were dancing.”

“I’ve had a lot of authorities saying we can’t rehearse in that space,” Wambari said. “It’s been very frustrating to not be able to do our art there.”

On the day of the event there were no issues. “It ran pretty smoothly,” said Leslie Guyton, a sophomore dance education major and stage manager for “LOL.” “We were on time and it ran great and I feel the production team put in what they needed to put in.”

The entire tour cost $5 and lasted an hour. At every site there were onlookers who were passing through and stopped to watch.

“Like the lunch lady came out and watched, but she didn’t get to see the whole campus tour that we were trying to put out,” Guyton said. “If you pay the full five dollars then you get the full experience of what the USM dance represents.”

Dealing with annoying roommates Yolanda Cruz Printz Reporter Some people are lucky enough to have the perfect roommate. It might be a person who is considerate of you and your belongings. It might be someone who wakes up and goes to bed at the same time you do, so there’s no worries about keeping quiet. Some people even consider the perfect roommate as someone who has a totally different schedule and is never home.

Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a perfect roommate. I see this happen a lot with freshmen, but it can happen to anyone.

No one is immune from having horrible roommates, whether you share a room, a suite, an apartment or even a house.

So, what do you do if you are stuck with an annoying roommate? The thing most people do is just ignore them. Maybe they made a mistake.

Maybe that person didn’t know you were saving those baked cookies or that you prefer their toothpaste to stay out of the sink. Those little things aren’t a big deal at first, but they can end up driving you crazy.

Another thing you shouldn’t

do is be passive-aggressive about certain situations.

More than once, I have experienced people putting sticky notes across the room with reminders like “let’s clean up after ourselves” or “keeping the room at this temperature makes me too cold.” This is not the way to go about things.

It may be a way to make sure your roommate sees the note in case you don’t get the chance to see them, but it comes off as a bit cowardly.

It conveys, “I have a problem with what you do but I don’t have the guts to say it to your face.”

When dealing with annoying roommates, just be honest about it. Talk to the person about any problems you have. They may not even realize what they are doing is aggravating.

Talking to them also shows you think what they have to say is important.

It’s not just one person running the show and the other one has to deal with it. Talking it out helps your roommate respect you and maybe they will stop doing those things that bug you.

pus, and he has advice for dealing with difficult roommates.

“I’d say the best way to get along with a roommate is to interact with them, make conversation, find things in common,” Shams said. “Make an effort yourself be-

Well that’s great advice for anyone who lives on campus, but what

about the students who don’t? Students still have conflicts with roommates in their apartments or houses.

A lot of the same advice can still apply. Talk to them in a mature manner and let them know how you feel.

Some people are very open to honest discussion. If it still doesn’t work, King offers a great piece of advice.

“Another important thing to remember is that you are both adults that are in college, not high school,” she said. It makes everything easier if you are just civil to each other.”

That is probably the most important thing to remember. In life, you have to deal with all kinds of people you may or may not get along with.

Just because you don’t like someone doesn’t mean you can just avoid him or her for the rest of your life.

Part of college is getting prepared for the real world, and learning to work with others is part of the real world. Just be mature about things.

Make the most of your time together and remember that no roommate situation is permanent.

Southern Miss soccer loses to Rice at home Alan Rawls Printz Reporter In a hot and humid Saturday afternoon game, the Southern Miss soccer team lost to Rice (5-5-2, 3-2) with a 3-0 shutout to bring the Eagles’ record to 6-5-2 (0-3-2 in conference).

Before the end of the first period the Rice Owls got off 11 shots and scored two early goals.

Rice’s junior midfielder Gabriela Iribarne scored the first goal off an assist by Lauren Hughes in the 15th minute, and in the 18th minute, forward Holly Hargreaves scored on a penalty kick.

Going into the second period trailing 2-0, the Golden Eagles fought back by setting up several chances to score. USM matched Rice’s performance with seven second-period shots and Danica Roberts had an opportunity to score on a penalty kick with three minutes left to play.

However, Southern Miss could not produce on these opportunities.

“We got unlucky with the penalty kick in the first half and unlucky in the second half when we had our penalty kick,” senior Chelsea Cruthirds said after the game. “We unfortunately missed it. We got some good chances. And moving forward, we have got to look forward to next weekend and put

those chances away so that we can get up there in the top of the conference.”

After yielding one more goal late in the game to Rice’s Quinny Truong, time expired and the Owls left Hattiesburg, Miss., with a conference win.

“It was a good fight, and Rice was a good team,” Cruthirds said. “We came out a little slow at the very beginning but we

picked it up. I thought we played well. It took us a little while to get into the groove of things but eventually we settled down.”

The Southern Miss soccer team has never defeated Rice, and the Oct. 12 game made USM’s overall series against the Owls 0-8. Despite the loss, firstyear head coach Mohammed ElZare was pleased with his team’s performance and teamwork.

“I am proud of the way we played today,” El-Zare said. “In the second half, particularly, we did a good job of limiting their chances and getting forward to create our own opportunities. What it came down to was they converted their chances and we were not able to.”

Aside from Roberts’ penalty kick, the Golden Eagles made 11 shots, only four of which were on goal.

The Owls’ defense blocked two

shots and their junior goalkeeper Amy Czyz recorded five saves.

“I think that it was a tough game (and) it was a hard team,” said freshman goalkeeper Brittany Taylor. “We did have possession for most of the time and it was unfortunate we weren’t able to finish opportunities, but I think if we just keep working for it, and just keep playing our game, I think we can develop into the team I know we are.”

Entering that game, Taylor (3-5-4) led Conference-USA in both total saves (66) and in save percentage (.880). Against Rice she recorded nine saves and three goals against, including the penalty kick by Hargreaves.

“I am so proud of the effort and the fighting spirit we showed (Saturday),” El-Zare said. “We continue to play as a team and play as hard as we can. We are going to get some positive results because of this.

I have 100 percent confidence.

“Failure is an avenue toward success. I believe we will rise up.

We are nearing success. If we continue to work and play like this, good results will come our way.”

With only five games left in the season, the Golden Eagles will try to earn their first conference win in San Antonio against UTSA on Friday, Oct. 18. The Eagles will face Louisiana Tech Sunday, Oct. 20.

Volleyball

Southern Miss splits two-game homestand Judge Lucas Printz Reporter Southern Miss split a pair of home games against UTSA and UTEP Oct. 11 and Oct. 13 to improve to 11-9 overall and 2-3 in Conference USA play.

Southern Miss could not find an answer for UTSA early in the first set. The Eagles posted 16 kills while UTSA collected

18 to win the set 25-18.

UTSA would start off hot once again and take an early lead in the second set. Southern Miss chipped away at the lead to get within one before a Roadrunner timeout. After both teams traded points back and forth, the Eagles finally ended the set with a 26-24 win.

Not straying from the previous two starts, the Roadrunners began the third set on a hot streak again and Southern Miss was easily defeated 25-12.

The fourth set was a struggle for both teams until UTSA found rhythm and doubled up Southern Miss’ score. The theme would continue until the end when the Roadrunners pulled away with a 25-15 win.

The UTSA victory maintained their unblemished CUSA record at 5-0. The win over Southern Miss was the school’s seventh straight and improved its record to 13-6.

Southern Miss’ fortune would

be more favorable in the next game against UTEP. The Eagles maintained a slim lead throughout the first set before going on a 9-3 run to close it out 25-17.

The second set featured both teams trading points early until the Eagles extended their lead 21-16. Following a Miners timeout, UTEP attempted to make a comeback before Southern Miss sealed the set 25-20.

Despite UTEP getting a head start over Southern Miss in the

third set, the Miners would give up a 5-1 lead and allow the Eagles to tie the set at 5-5. After trading points and a UTEP timeout, Southern Miss would finish with a 25-19 win and sweep the Miners.

The Miners loss drops the school to 4-2 in C-USA play and 10-7 overall.

Southern Miss will be on the road against 18-2 (4-1) Tulane and 7-13 (1-4) Louisiana Tech Oct. 18 and Oct. 20.

Baseball

USM to host 2014 Conference USA baseball tournament Judge Lucas Printz Reporter Southern Miss will host the 2014 Conference USA baseball tournament at Pete Taylor Park in

Hattiesburg May 21-25.

Southern Miss won the bid after being represented by first-year Golden Eagles athletic director Bill McGillis. Southern Miss has hosted the tournament three other times in 1996, 2005 and 2009.

With hosting the tournament for the fourth time in 19 years, Pete Taylor Park would be the championship site more than any other facility.

The event will consist of the top-eight regular-season teams

and feature a double-elimination format. CBS College Sports will televise the championship game May 25.

Conference USA will field 13 baseball teams for the 2014 season: Charlotte, East Carolina,

FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB, UTSA and the defending-champion school Southern Miss finished 30-27 in 2013.

Historic Downtown

Hattiesburg hosts Fall Art Walk Megan Fink Printz Reporter The streets of downtown Hattiesburg were bustling Saturday night for the Fall Art Walk. Artists sold their work in outdoor kiosks to families who came to enjoy local music, craftsmanship and the Historic Downtown atmosphere. Some of the artists at the Art Walk primarily wanted to express their devotion to local crafts.

Sommer and Leslie Halloway were selling jewelry at a kiosk for their small business, “Sweet Magnolia Designs.” Sommer creates clay jewelry, and Leslie builds jewelry holders and displays. The sisters have been working on the company for about a year. “I’m from the downtown Hattiesburg area,” Sommer Halloway said. “I’m just amazed that I can come here now, especially with something I just started.”

Halloway’s signature pieces are clay necklaces, earrings, and rings shaped like the state of Miss. She mixes the colored clay, cuts it into shapes, then fires and glazes it. “I enjoy being a participant, but I also love just coming and experiencing downtown,” she said.

For other vendors, the walks can bring much-needed income. Ben Sloin, 56, from Chicago, has lived in Hattiesburg area for 30 years. He was at the Art Walk Saturday afternoon selling his handmade leather gloves, key chains, and other leatherwork pieces. “I started

with the gloves first, and then got into the key chains and other stuff,” Sloin said. This was his first Art Walk showing in the past few years and his first since being laid off from the nearby Kohler engine plant.

Sloin also regularly sells his crafts at gun shows. “I like to do [downtown art walks] because it doesn’t cost anything to set up here…I try to target shows where you can set up as cheaply as possible.”

The artists and entrepreneurs aren’t the only ones who benefitted from the Art Walk. Kat Robinson, a junior history major, and her boyfriend Tristan Austin of Grenada, were taking the opportunity to connect with their families and each other. “My family goes to every Art Walk throughout the year.

It’s kind of a tradition,” Robinson said. “It’s fun. My cousin sometimes has art here, at the Christmas walks. We’re all kind of art enthusiasts.”

The residents of Hattiesburg who attended Saturday’s Art Walk had plenty to provide an evening’s entertainment. The artists had an opportunity to share their work with local fans, and the downtown community enjoyed a welcome crowd.
