Annual powwow hosted on campus Paul White Printz Writer
The University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle Intertribal Society (GEIS) hosted its 11th annual powwow this weekend on Centennial Lawn. A powwow is a gathering of North America’s native people for ceremonial purposes and social gatherings and usually includes an aspect of competitive dancing. The two-day event featured Native American people, educational opportunities and food, products and crafts from all over the southern region of the United States. “The powwow is an incredible opportunity for USM students,” psychology professor and director of American Indian Research and Studies Tammy Greer said in a previous interview. “[The event] allows them to be a part of something they never would have experienced otherwise.” Friday was host to a number of events. The replacement of the field turf at M.M. Roberts Field has begun after it was damaged by the EF4 tornado that ripped through Hattiesburg in February. The process is expected to take about six weeks, and work

began last week when the old turf was rolled up. The damage to the turf forced the football team to use Petal High School as the location for the Black and Gold Spring Game. Southern Miss Athletic Director Jeff Hammond said entire athletic department is excited to have a new field to go along with the fresh start in the
football program. “We’re excited that we have the opportunity to put a new surface on the field,” Hammond said. “It will go well with the start of a new era: a new football coach, new uniforms and a new field. “The kids can’t wait to get out there. With the new deal with Russell, the great new coaching staff we have this season and
the great strength and conditioning program in place, the football players can’t wait to get out on the field and start the summer training programs. Its all-around a fresh start.” The field will have a slightly different look, although details have not yet been released to the public. “The field is basically the same but slightly different,”

Hammond said. “We hope to attract a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the fans this season. I met with President Bennett about it and we are waiting to give the details at the right time.” The Eagles get their first chance to play on the new field when they entertain Texas State on August 31 to open the Todd Monken era.
