ON CAMPUS

The show must go on: Music relocates Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor

When choral conducting graduate student Daniel Massey arrived at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center on a Sunday afternoon just more than a week ago, he never guessed that things were about to change drastically for himself and all other students in the University of Southern Mississippi School of Music.

Massey and about 20 others were gathered at the PAC on Feb. 10 to work on the set for “Sweeney Todd” when an EF-4 tornado ripped through Forrest and Lamar counties, destroying the Jazz Station and Leech House and causing damage to Marsh Auditorium, the Fine Arts Building and the PAC. “It was frustrating figuring out where classes were going to be, but our directors took things into their own hands and got the ball rolling again for us,” Massey said.

At a meeting Sunday night, exactly one week after Massey and other music students were huddled in the basement of the PAC taking cover from the tornado, department director Michael Miles held a meeting in Bennett Auditorium to explain the new classroom and practice spaces for the students. “I encourage you to find ways to come together and be together because we will be spread out all over campus in the coming weeks,” Miles told the crowd of

students that gathered to hear plans for the upcoming weeks. Miles said some classes have been moved to Joseph Greene Hall and the Hub, band and orchestral rehearsals to Bennett Auditorium and choral rehearsals to Parkway Heights United Methodist Church off Hardy Street. The gravel parking lot near Hillcrest has been dubbed “Twister Town” since the arrival of 17 mobile units that will house a variety of class, rehearsal, office and storage spaces.

Brandon Baker, a senior music education major, will have a few voice lessons in Twister Town, in addition to some classes in Joseph Greene. “We’re basically all over the place,” Baker said. “It’s inconvenient to go to the extreme ends of campus. It’s also hard knowing the place we call home on campus is torn apart, but we have to push forward and not let this kill our spirits.”
