No announcement made on Johnson’s future Eagles only winless Division I team in country Ben Welch Printz Writer

After completing a winless season, questions swirled around the Southern Miss Athletic Center about the future of the football program and its leader Monday.

The silence spoke volumes; as of Monday night Ellis Johnson will still be returning as the head coach of the Golden Eagles next season.

Athletic Director Jeff Hammond did not return a phone call, no official announcement was made and no players were available for questioning on Monday.

“I have no idea [whether I’ll be back next season],” Johnson said after Saturday’s 42-24 loss to Memphis. “I’m just more concerned about the overall improvement of the team. We never got better and better, and a lot of it was because of the quarterback situation and the injuries at all the positions. It was

up and down, up and down. By the time you look at it, this is week 12 and we are no better than we were week two.”

The team did have a meeting for the players Monday afternoon, but, according to reports from members of the football team, that meeting had been scheduled before the loss to Memphis over the weekend.

Saturday’s game finished the first winless season for the Golden Eagles since 1925. It also cemented the worst differential in wins in Division-I football from last year to this season.

It takes a perfect storm of things to go wrong for a program to go from 12-2 with a conference championship victory to 0-12 with an 0-8 conference record. After losing the entire coaching staff, a four-year starter at quarterback and several defensive starters, Southern Miss struggled to replace all of the leaders and play makers.

Four different quarterbacks started for the Eagles, and five different quarterbacks saw playing time. Injuries plagued the teams of starters and key contributors.

If he keeps his head coaching job, Johnson will return to Hattiesburg with his 17-40 career coaching record.

Despite the obstacles the team faced this season, Johnson focused on pulling the team together in an interview Saturday.

“There are obvious things that happened to this football team and I say this mostly in defense of the players - there are things that this football team incurred that are overwhelming, smothering.

The injury factor being the most obvious,” Johnson said. “It can be fixed, but everyone has to pull in the same direction.”

The Eagles have already fired strength and conditioning coach Steve Maples. Maples had been out

of coaching the last 20 years before accepting the job here. Many fans have their eyes set on offensive coordinator Steve Buckley. Buckley, who was the head football coach at Petal High School last season, took over play-calling duties after current running backs coach Rickey Bustle was forced to step down due to illness.

This season, Buckley’s offense ranked No. 112 out of 120 teams in D-I football, scoring 19.7 points per game. The Eagles did find some success on the ground, but a lack of an aerial attack doomed Southern Miss on many occasions, as they averaged only 168 yards passing, which is good enough for No. 111 in the country.

“At the end of the day, it’s the head coach’s responsibility to find some way to overcome those obstacles and get that done,” Johnson said before the game against Memphis Saturday. “What I’m going to

have to do is evaluate. We’re going to evaluate, and the first evaluation is going to start with me to make sure I didn’t drop the ball on something, whether it’s organization, Xs and Os, player motivation, whatever. We’ve got to find out what else we can do to fix that.”

Southern Miss finished the season as the only winless team in the country. Looking ahead, it could be a while before Southern Miss fans can taste victory again.

The Eagles open up next season in some order with road games at Boise State, Arkansas, East Carolina and Marshall as well as a neutral site contest against Nebraska. The fact of the matter is, as of Monday night, Johnson is slated to remain the head football coach next season. The assistant coaches could be a different story. Either way, it could be a long road back to the top for Southern Miss.

Campus ranked safer place in Hattiesburg Chris Greene Webmaster

Despite the Nov. 13 stabbing on campus and an armed robbery on West 4th Street the week before, students and concerned parents might take solace in the fact that the University of Southern Mississippi remains one of the safest locations in the city of Hattiesburg, according to Neighborhood Scout, an online statistics database. On a colored-coded map of the city, west Hattiesburg and USM were shown as the

safest parts of the city, whereas the area surrounding William Carey University is shown to be the most dangerous.

According to the crime summary statistics offered on the University Police Department website, liquor law violations and burglaries are the lowest they have been in the past three years. Larceny has gone down from 164 cases in 2009 to 115 cases in 2012, marking a significant drop but still the largest category of all criminal activity on campus.

Aggravated assaults have gone from zero in 2009 to three in 2012. One person was hos-

pitalized as a result of the November stabbing, but University Police Chief Bob Hopkins assured students that assaults such as this are not a common occurrence. “I believe it speaks well of our efforts in prevention when you look at the statistics,� Hopkins said. “Just over one percent of the entire campus population (14,815) was affected by a criminal act on the campus.�

Although the recent crimes have spooked some citizens, UPD and the Hattiesburg Police Department maintain a close relationship when dealing with crime in Hattiesburg.

“We work closely with Hattiesburg police and share information on crimes near the campus community,� Hopkins said. “Issues that we feel could be a danger to the campus community are shared in the form of an early warning using Eagle Alert. Our goal is to be proactive in our crime prevention efforts.�

The Eagle Alert system, which consists of text messages, phone calls and e-mails, has been used to alert students of everything from severe weather to crime near campus.

In addition to Eagle Alert, students are reminded that UPD provides 24-hour escort

services for those who have legitimate concerns for their personal safety while walking on campus. Red escort phones are located in buildings around campus, or students can call for an escort at 601-266-5919.

Blue emergency telephones are also located throughout campus, and at the push of a button students are connected to an officer and their locations are relayed to the department.

SGA to Light the Way for the Holidays Rachel Beech Printz Writer

Nothing exemplifies the spirit of the holiday season quite like Lighting the Way for the Holidays, a celebration held annually at the University of Southern Mississippi. This free event is open to the public and will be held on campus Thursday.

Lighting the Way, in its sixth year at Southern Miss, is sponsored by USM’s Student Government Association. The event is set to kick off at 5 p.m. with musical performances beginning at 5:30. “This event is an important part of making memories at Southern Miss,� said Serena Williams, event coordinator and USM junior. “Coming together to celebrate the holidays and share this time of year with people you love most is how we make such a strong university.�

Williams said the event will include such children’s activities as pictures with Santa and ornament decorating. Free hot chocolate and chili will also be available at the event. Other activities will include making cards for military, presentations from SGA members about the holiday season and a photo booth.

The tree lighting is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. with a countdown from Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas, interim university president, and musical acts will include The Arc Southeast Mississippi Show Choir; Petal High School Jazz Band and Spirit of Southern.

Williams said 24 organizations are participating in the event by decorating the trees that line the main entrance to campus, and each organization made a donation to participate.

The money raised goes to a local charity, and this year’s recipient is The Arc Southeast

Mississippi, a United Way nonprofit organization devoted to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Tim Wells, executive administrator of programming for SGA, said Lighting the Way will be more special this year, as it has recently been deemed an official Southern Miss tradition. “Lighting the Way is an opportunity for the university community to gather and celebrate the holiday season,� Wells said. “Since it began six years ago, the event has grown in size and popularity amongst the community. This year marks the event as the university’s

newest tradition, which is all the more reason for students, faculty and the Southern Miss

community to come out and support the event.�

Not everything about ‘Twilight’ sparkles Hayley Bush Printz Writer Before all you vampires out there bite me with your fangs, I would like to preface this by saying that this is my personal opinion. We are all entitled to our own opinion, with the exception of Bella Swan. She gets told what to do and gave the right to think on her own to a sparkling man.

With the recent premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2,” vampires and werewolves have become all the rage. Again. For the fifth time.

Why do people enjoy a book series in which a girl with the personality of a baked potato somehow has two part boy/part mythical creatures fawning over her? I do not understand, and I probably never will.

But, here is one thing I do understand. As a woman and a decent human being of the 21st century, the “Twilight” saga outrages me.

Let’s start from the beginning.

A 17-year-old girl moves to a new town, and through vampire magic or whatever a 100-year-old sparkling man-creature named Edward is attracted to her. He must protect her. He watches her sleep through her window at night. Then there is a local werewolf boy named Jacob who fights the vampires. Edward goes away for a while and Bella goes into an emotional coma in which she stares out a window for three months. Then she goes back to Jacob and the wolf pack (because

God forbid she doesn’t have a male to tell her what to do) but then dramatically jumps off a cliff and practically drowns because risking her life is the only way she can see visions of Edward. At some point she goes to Italy to save her beloved Edward but some-

how ends up making a deal with the evil vampires to become one of them. Then Edward and Bella get married and have a vampire/human child who eats her way out of the womb and is magically born a full-grown tod-

dler. When the child is around age six, Jacob imprints on her.

That’s all I know because I refuse to spend a precious $10 on this final installment.

So, what’s the problem here, you ask? To start with, Edward is 100 and watches a young girl sleep at night

through her window. Last time I checked, we described that as pedophilia. Also, he has to restrain himself from biting or killing her.

Yet you people call this romance?

He is always saving her, implying that she is a helpless and feeble girl. And when he does save her, he never fails to make a comment about how she couldn’t survive without his help. I’m sorry, but if a sparkling boy tried to save me from anything I would probably laugh. But, oh wait, Bella can’t laugh because she

has no personality and has been stripped of all normal human emotion. This also explains why she is played by Kristen Stewart.

For a brief period in “New Moon,” the second book in the saga, Edward goes away for several months to do something that vampires do, probably to drink blood or bedazzle himself.

Anyway, Bella does nothing. She literally sits in front of a window.

I understand the heartbreak and all, but snap out of it. Go hang out with your friends. Oh, that’s right, Bella has no friends because she alienated them all when she fell for that vampire.

Also, while Edward is away, Bella can only have visions of him when she is doing something dangerous, such as fighting an evil vampire who looks like Bob Marley’s stunt double or jumping off a cliff. It appears that Bella is willing to kill herself just to have a brief glance at Edward while he is nowhere to be found.

But it’s totally fine, because all of this is so romantic.

Basically, Bella is forever at the mercy of Edward. Sadly, millions of teenage girls and middle-aged

mothers are too.

Bella is simply the epitome of weakness and male dependency.

Women have fought to escape these descriptions, and one series, written for 13-year-old girls, has completely plastered on the labels.

There is a reason girls in our country are so obsessed with this series. They find themselves relating to Bella, or they make themselves relate to her. The author of the series created a protagonist (it kills me to have the word pro in a word that describes Bella) who had the willpower of a housewife in the 1950s, and strangely girls want to be like her.

Young females have no knowledge of the battles women fought to overcome living like Bella.

When all they see are women who are easily charmed by men, that’s what they want to be.

This message is not what we should be sending to young girls with developing minds.

Stephenie Meyer, the author of this atrocity, knew what kind of girl to create that would draw in readers and audiences. Girls admire the personality and characteristics of Bella because she “gets the guy,” regardless of how much air her brain has the capacity to hold (it’s probably a whole lot, by the way). Edward Cullen is a somewhat twisted version of a knight in shining armor, every young girl’s dream guy. Plus, he’s a vampire, which is apparently attractive these days.

When younger girls see the way Bella pathetically acts, they assume that it’s the way to make a man fall in love with them. However, the “Twilight” saga promotes women sacrificing every portion of themselves for a man.

It teaches girls to be unhealthily submissive, not to mention it is basically a guide for a girl to fall victim to a potentially abusive relationship.

In conclusion, if you ever think you’re doing well in life and need to be brought back down to earth, let me remind you of this: Bella Swan with her potato-like personality has two attractive boys chasing after her and you are single.

Thank you, America, for continuing to perpetuate this disgrace of a series.

Hub City Comedy: Where laughter and awkwardness collide Ginny Kramer Printz Writer

When most college students hear the word “comedian,” the first name that usually comes to mind is Dane Cook. This is rightfully so; he is a master of witty one-liners, and to attend a Dane Cook show, although not in keeping with a college student’s budget, is on many collegians’ bucket lists. As a more economical alternative, Hattiesburg’s own Hub City Comedy partners with smalltime comedians to serve a slightly different humorous dish: one best paired with a glass of beer and a touch of cynicism. Best of all, it will only cost you five bucks.

On Sunday night, I had the privilege of attending an event sponsored by NOLA Comedy Hour at the new and improved Thirsty Hippo in downtown Hattiesburg.

The line-up included Hattiesburg natives Corbin McDavitt and Brittany Purvis along with touring stand-up comics Matt Wayman, Cyrus Cooper, Andrew Polk and Eric Ngarney. Considering that I am a sorority girl whose only brush with comedy is when “Mean Girls” airs on Comedy Central, I didn’t have the slightest clue what to expect during their performances. But, like most bar acts, the drinks started flowing, the good vibes started radiating and the laughter started swelling.

The line that separates the generic,

famous comedians from small-time, touring comedians is embodied in one word: awkward. Not the kind of awkward when you see a girl with her skirt tucked into her pantyhose; rather, the kind of awkward when you witness your widowed grandmother having a lengthy conversation with her Persian cat. The lines and stories being thrown out on Sunday night were not the precisely scripted dialogues that one would expect, but this genuine rawness embodied a natural awkwardness that made the jokes much more relatable and much, much funnier. From big beautiful women to first time Adderall use to the worst sex you have ever had, each comedian dished out unique stories that were so inappropriately relevant to our generation, you would think the comics ripped each topic straight from a college student’s Internet browsing history.

The best part about this event was that it brought together people from all demographics into a fun and comfortable environment by the cohesive force of laughter. Once the comedy hour concluded, I felt a sense of community with these people; I shared an original, entertaining experience with complete strangers who, despite all of our outward differences, found humor and happiness in the same things.

Letter to the Editor written

I’m standing at the season opener against Western Kentucky for the Southern Miss men’s basketball team.

Throughout the game, many intense moments occur, and I find myself with a small group of friends and the baseball team cheering loudly for the Eagles. I then look behind myself to find that the majority of the student section, outside of one or two fraternity groups, are sitting on their hands looking like this sport is completely foreign to them. I then become embarrassed as I see sixty-plus-yearold men and women standing and cheering on the Eagles louder than the student section.

As a senior this year, I’ve dealt with success and failure in our basketball program. I’ve been through losses to Savannah State and Canisius (who is this, anyway?) and traveling all the way to Pittsburgh to watch our Eagles compete in their first NCAA Tournament

in 20 years. And while we have not always had the most exciting brand of basketball under Eustachy, things have changed completely with Donnie Tyndall. The offense and defense he has brought to this program are exciting and fun to watch, and it’s time that the students support this team. We have a fun product on the court, and this team has already broken everyone’s expectations by being undefeated at this point early in the season. With the team still learning, we’re sure to be in for an exciting year of Southern Miss basketball.

Students, it’s time that we stand up and support our team.

Football obviously didn’t pan out like any of us wanted it to, so take all that excitement that we dearly hold onto for every fall Saturday, and let’s transfer it to basketball. There is no reason we should have to wait until mid-February when we host Memphis for there to be an electric atmosphere at Reed Green. Atmosphere starts with the students. And don’t just go to the game and sit on your hands like you’re in a library. Stand up and scream. Be loud. Put your hands up when we’re shooting free throws. Hover your arms above your head to the left then quickly throw them to the right when the opponent is shooting free throws. It sounds stupid, but it’s proven to distort the shooter’s perception, and they mess up. But it only works when everyone is involved, not just 10 people. Let’s chant “Defense!” Let’s get inside players’ heads. Let’s make Reed Green one of the toughest environments in the country.

It starts with us students. It doesn’t start with alumni. I’ve sat three years now through a lackadaisical student section that looked like they didn’t know why they were there. It’s time to change that. Tonight we host Denver at 7. Let’s pack Tyndall Town (the student section) and support this team.

Black Friday: When thankfulness disappears Arielle Edwards Printz Writer Thanksgiving is a time of year to step back and look at everything great in life and what to be thankful for. However, this feeling disappears once the clock strikes midnight and everyone starts lining up for the Black Friday sales. This feeling drifts even further away when someone decides to get violent over a red cashmere sweater; “It’s mine!” screams one greedy lady as she throws a punch at the other greedy woman.

Did either of these ladies need another sweater in her closet?

Probably not, but it’s the thrill of the chase, as I’ve been told, of the feeling of getting something usually so expensive for so cheap! As my mother asks, “Is it really a deal if you didn’t need it in the first place?” I have never attended a Black Friday sale until this year. As I stood in line to get some cute jewelry, I noticed other women standing up straighter and bee lining for what they wanted as the doors were unlocked.

These businesses have the idea that these sales will boost the economy, but it’s a onenight sale; how much boosting could possibly be done in that time? If retailers would consistently offer low prices, that would be better for the economy in the long run because people would constantly shop.

Black Friday is just a carnival of

capitalism in which retailers lower their prices to reel customers in. This is often the highest sales day for most businesses throughout the year.

The name Black Friday refers to moving ‘into the black,” or retailers becoming profitable for the year on that specific day.

Black Friday is such a ridiculous notion to me. Why would you want to go wait in those lines for all those hours just to have people push and shove you and yell at you for taking the last toaster? Black Friday is no longer just a big sale after the holidays; it has become a holiday in itself.
