split decision. Hello again. March. It is a split decision for me in March - calving season vs. bull sale season. Be it the post-sale bookwork or the pre-sale panic, many of us have bull sale brain this month and all the while, welcoming babies in the barn. Likely due to my Irish roots and birth date, March is one of my favorite months. (I mean, green beer and birthday cake, what more can I say?) But, maybe it is not yours. Perhaps sleep is in short supply around your place, or patience is running thin. We can help! Turn to page 42 for B. Lynn Gordon’s tips on conflict resolution during this busy season and page 60 for some tasty, everyone-is-busy season recipes from LeeAnn Waugh at Cannon Valley Ranch. And while you are at it, read a little more, you won’t be disappointed. A friend paid us a super compliment at a recent farm show. She said, “We love your magazine; it is always in the bathroom.” How great is that?! The Stockman is perfect for your bathrooms, barn offices, trucks, and everywhere in between - we’ll even help you pass the time while you give that cow another 30 minutes.

FOCUS on the by B. Lynn Gordon photos courtesy Plasen Red Angus

The passion is contagious at Pladsen Red Angus.

March 2020

A spark of interest from their children has led this family into a new venture of raising registered Red Angus, and they can’t say enough about how happy they are to be in the business. About 8 years ago, oldest son, Chase, asked his parents, Steve and Michele Pladsen, Harpers Ferry, IA if he could purchase a heifer to show. Little did they know that this move would change their lives the way it has and that now they would be focused on marketing top Red Angus genetics from their northeast Iowa farm.

16

CHANGES AHEAD In the late 1980s, Steve Pladsen’s father had commercial cattle that they bred to Red Angus bulls. The family was friends with Walter and Nan Larson, Larson Red Angus, Decorah, IA, pioneers in the Red Angus business, who introduced them to Red Angus genetics. The Pladsen’s liked what they saw in disposition and growthy calves. When Chase expressed interest in showing cattle in 4-H, he started out with a commercial heifer. “Once we saw how he just loved the farm and cattle my wife and I decided it was time to get a little more serious about

this for him,” says Steve, and the decision to which breed they would purchase was easy - it would be Red Angus. On their way for a family weekend trip to a UNI football game in Cedar Falls, IA, they decided to stop in to visit Red Angus breeders, Garth and Nancy Griffith. They purchased two open heifers that day, and the following spring, went to the Iowa Beef Expo and bought two more. “Needless to say, we got the fever and started purchasing more Red Angus cattle,” said Michele. The family currently runs a confinement hog operation and

FUTURE When son, Luke, then expressed interest as well in showing cattle, the family traveled to Wisconsin and purchased more cattle from Ennis Wallace of Emerald. The cattle were from the Damar and Cloud Nine programs, which are Red Angus herds managed by Wallace.

They also headed west to another established program. Pieper Red

the Chevrolet dealership in Waukon, IA. Michele is a teacher at Allamakee Community Schools. Chase is a 2019 graduate from Iowa State University and is back home on the farm, managing the hog operation and day-to-day cattle management. Luke is a senior at Waukon High School and will be attending Iowa State this fall.

“We started spending a lot of time on the road and traveling around the country showing cattle and meeting some very nice people that we are very close with today.”

The Pladsen family had now developed both a spring and fall calving herd, which would become advantageous as the herds were based on different pedigree backgrounds. “It was almost like we were running two different herds, and we could market cattle from whichever herd best suited our customers. We feel like our customers can now buy a bull from one side of the pedigree and keep heifers out of them and then come back and buy from the other pedigrees.” As the interest continued to grow from their sons in showing and marketing Red Angus cattle, the family soon were traveling to major events. “We started spending a lot of time on the road and traveling around the country showing cattle and meeting some very nice people that we are very close with today.” Pladsens have exhibited at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, National Western in Denver, North American in Louisville and Sioux Empire Livestock Show in Sioux Falls.

PROGRAM PRIORITIES The herd has grown to 60 cows and a recently added embryo program, resulting in receiving about 90 calves per year. Four donor cows make up the primary donor program including Bellett X22, Damar Oh Baby W168, Pieper Playmate, and Red Eutopia 42U. These donors are flushed to leading sires such as Silveras Mission Nexus, PIE Cinch, PIE Cowboy Kind, and Red Soo Line Power Eye. Pladsen Red Angus is very interested in expanding its embryo program. Following which bulls have worked on which cows over the past few years, they are confident they can produce some very high-quality offspring and more numbers with embryo transfer. They have also been working with a couple of neighbors who have offered recipient cows. Although the terrain in northeast Iowa is rugged, it does offer good pastures and land for beef cattle operations, thus the family is confident the expansion of their numbers will still provide a market. “We knew if we were going to make this a go and make a

future for our boys then we needed to establish ourselves with an annual bull sale.” In April 2019, Pladsen Red Angus hosted their first annual sale and April 2020 they will be offering 45 bulls and a dozen open heifers. “Our goal is to someday sell 100 plus bulls,” says Steve. They chose to host the sale in April as most area producers turn their bulls out in June or July. Making the purchase in April versus February means the

customers can turn the bull out about 30-60 days after purchase. Located in far northeastern Iowa offers them a unique bull market. Many of the local producers were previously dairy farmers, but as margins in the dairy industry became tight, area farmers sold their dairies, focused on crops and decided to run small commercial beef herds. Herds averaging 20 head of cattle are now seeking bulls, and this has

become a great market for Pladsen Red Angus. “Our customers are looking for bulls with excellent disposition, a low birthweight to offer calving ease, yet some growth in the calves and Red Angus genetics is a perfect fit. A live calf is worth everything.” Their program focuses on fulfilling the needs of the commercial cow/calf producer, selling females that are easy to handle, have good mothering ability and

longevity for their customers. Longevity is also important on the bull side of the equation. They aim to sell bulls that are structurally sound because they want the bulls to last 4-5 years. Selling bulls that are durable and long-lasting will be key to having return bull buyers.

“We built it for the kids because now they will have something to take into their future. It has been such a joy watching our kids grow up and learn how to manage and take care of the cattle,” says Michele. “Having them learn the importance of herd health, feed quality and how to handle livestock - you treat the cattle well they will treat you well,” echoes Steve. The family cannot say enough about the people who have helped them. It seemed right from when their interest in Red Angus began, when they asked questions about the breed, the industry, etc., neighboring Red Angus breeders were willing to help. “The breeders were very open to teaching us and our kids. They never shut a door on us; in fact, they seemed

almost more excited at times about our success than we were,” says Steve. “We wouldn’t be here without their help.” Although many breeders offered assistance and advice, the Pladsen family says Ennis and Karen Wallace, Walter and Nan Larson, Garth and Nancy Griffith, Mark and Deb Pieper, and Mike and Diana Nolan were very influential in helping them get started and continue to grow. “It is not easy to get started in the agriculture business, especially for bringing in the next generation. We were fortunate to have other financial elements to help us strive for our vision for our children and many great people who are supporting us along the way,” says Steve and Michele. learn more facebook.com/pladsenredangus

After relocating, K7 Herefords found the space to expand.

A

March 2020

4-H project in 1968 that got out of hand is how Tom Heidt owner of K7 Herefords, Lockridge, IA describes his entrance into the purebred cattle business.

28

Growing up one of 11 children on a southwestern Wisconsin dairy farm, Tom learned hard work early from the hands-on daily chores of caring for animals. That experience transcended into his interest of learning as much as he could about raising and breeding beef cattle. Heidt lived in Wisconsin until making the decision in 2007 to move his family to Iowa. High land prices in Wisconsin made cost of production high and was limiting the ability to expand their Hereford herd.

Tom, his wife Jo, and children Victoria, Shane and Patti, relocated to southeastern Iowa, about 40 miles from Missouri and 40 miles from Illinois. They were able to purchase more acres and continue their strong focus of building a quality Hereford herd to about 100 cows. Oldest daughter, Victoria, currently lives in Loganville, WI, along with her husband Hank, and two young sons. Son, Shane lives near Des Moines and works at Waste Management in the energy recovery plant. Youngest daughter, Patti, lives at home, works second shift, and helps with the night shift cow checks, along with being the operation’s computer as-

sistant. Everyone comes together to put in their own weight, input, and talents.

BUILDING A MARKET In a step towards building their market in Iowa, K7 Herefords decided to host an annual bull and female sale rather than exclusively sell their cattle private treaty. Having a 50-year history in Herefords, with a little over a decade of that in Iowa, Heidt believed by conducting promotion for an onfarm bull sale would bring more visibility to his breeding program and a way to build a customer base. Interestingly, K7 Herefords is currently the only registered

above K7 Herefords believe in an on-site sale, inviting folks to come and inspect their offering each year.

In addition to selling top bulls, they will be offering pick of their entire 2019 spring-and fall-born heifers. All heifers will be paired up as they go into the ring and the buyer can choose his pick. K7 will keep the other heifer to go back into their herd as a replacement

female. 2020 will be the farm’s third year of offering this deep pick into their genetics. Exhibiting at state, regional, and national shows has also been a method K7 has used to spread word about their program. Fellow breeders and commercial customers can view K7 cattle at the National Western Stock Show, American Royal, and the Iowa State Fair. The Hereford operation has exhibited either a pen of bulls or heifers or both for the past 12 years in the yards in Denver, taking home the Champion Pen of Heifers banner in 2010. Anyone that knows Tom Heidt loves to visit at these cattle events and does not sugar coat anything. As

he says, “Those boots are to be worn for a reason,” and those who know him well often joke about this as Tom always has a story to tell.

BREEDING GOALS In order to ensure longevity in the business, Heidt has kept a keen focus on the genetics he adds into the program. Ultimately, he would like to buy a Hereford bull that would meet all the qualifications of the herd: however, he has found a better fit by selecting top Hereford genetics and A.I. to those genetic lines. Becoming proficient in A.I., from his years in the dairy cattle business, he is

Hereford herd in the state of Iowa to host an annual bull and female sale. The first couple of years they were a guest consignor with neighboring friends who hosted a Red Angus sale. When those friends left the business, K7 took on the venture on their own. “We believed having a sale would be a better way to get people to see our cattle, rather than just an ad in the paper,” Heidt says.

able to do all his own A.I. work for his herd and likes the flexibility that comes with being able to influence the sire selection more efficiently than having to go out and purchase new bulls. “Not every bull works in every cowherd,” he says “but when you find one that works you need to keep A.I’ing to that bull.” He recalls a wise breeder telling him ‘use a bull for two years and then move on. If the bull is good he will produce a son that is even better, and if the bull didn’t work out, in two years, he won’t have moved your program back too far.’ Heidt has always kept this

theory in mind and primarily uses a sire for only two years. With a base cowherd that is both horned and polled genetic lines, K7 has set out to maintain those genetics. They breed horned females to horned bulls, and on the polled side they are striving to get their cowherd all homozygous polled. “Bull buyers interested in polled bulls are generally seeking ones that are homozygous.” When selecting and evaluating genetics, Heidt explains he focuses on EPDs, actual performance data to back up the EPDs, and a moderate birthweight. “Ultimately we want to have a below-aver-

______

age birthweight that then translates into above average growth and have that curve bender.” “I also put a lot of focus on the mature cow weight EPD in comparison to carcass weight.” He believes the industry can benefit from heavy carcass weights, but he does not want to have 1,800 lb. cows to produce that 1,300 lb. carcass. Thus, he watches this closely and is putting an emphasis on this selection parameter within his EPD focus. Additional carcass traits such as ribeye area and marbling rank high at K7. “If they don’t have marbling, they don’t fit in my

ASKING ‘WHY?’ WITH SYSTEMS THINKING: A POWERFUL TOOL FOR PROBLEM SOLVING B

March 2020

eef production from conception to consumption is a complex, biological system where cause and effect are often distant in time and space. For example, things that occurred to a calf while it was developing inside of a cow, can impact that animal throughout its life all the way to harvest. This can

36

make it challenging to identify and address the actual source of a problem when it is observed. To better understand and address the source of problems, consider asking the question “why?” Asking “why?” can be a very powerful tool in addressing problems. When an issue

occurs in a production system, there is often an effort to fix the problem without fully appreciating the “why” behind the problem. Sometimes “why?” needs to be asked multiple times in order to identify the underlying structure at the source of the problem. The principle of asking

Some questions that could be asked in a situation like this are: -Why is pinkeye in cattle a problem? -Why did this particular calf

THE STOCKMAN | thestockmanmag.com

contract pinkeye when most of its herd mates didn’t? -Why is pinkeye a problem now in the herd if it hasn’t been before? -What are the organisms that cause pinkeye in cattle? What conditions are conducive to pinkeye in cattle? Asking “why?” is one of the fundamental steps to effective problem solving and decision making. In systems thinking, the goal is to understand at a deeper level how systems function. Systems thinking recognizes that there are often hidden and unintended consequences to actions. For example, if a bull is treated

for pinkeye and then kept as a herd sire, could that bull’s offspring have a greater likelihood of contracting the disease than those sired by a bull that never had pinkeye? For many people, asking “why?” is one of the first steps in a fundamental shift in thinking that allows people to address problems in new ways. It also reveals that the problems we face today are ones that we unknowingly may have created ourselves. To quote Albert Einstein, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” University of Nebraska - Lincoln Interviews with the authors of BeefWatch newsletter articles become available throughout the month of publication and are accessible at https://go.unl. edu/podcast.

March 2020

“why?” has value in understanding the issues facing the beef industry today. Often when problems arise, we seek to treat the symptom of the problem without taking time to identify the source of the problem. For example, a calf gets pinkeye and is treated with an antibiotic to address the problem. The calf improves after treatment and little thought is given as to why the calf got pinkeye initially.

Leading the Way

How leadership works on the ranch.

contributed article by B. Lynn Gordon Leader Consulting

THE STRESS OF THE SEASON FIVE TIPS TO REDUCE CONFLICT IN HIGH-STRESS TIMES

Whether March comes in

roaring like a lion or quietly like a lamb, March is synonymous with calving season. For some ranches, calving may be winding down and others, it is ramping up, but generally, spring calving is in full swing. Calving time brings long days, sleepless nights, and dealing with unpredictable weather, all of which can negatively impact one’s mood. This creates high stress levels, low energy, and short tempers. Dealing with stressful situations day after day is often mirrored in how we act and communicate. Communication becomes limited and strained and before we know it conflict occurs from miscommunication. As communication begins to break down, there is a

higher likelihood of misinterpretation of what was said. Around the ranch, this can result in tasks incorrectly completed, mistakes made, feelings hurt, and an unwillingness to want to work together. When your mind and body are tired, your ability to organize your thoughts and feelings and listen carefully becomes more difficult. You may not be in the mood to have a conversation or opt to keep any communication brief. This disconnection then starts to overflow onto others around you. Communication becomes even more vital in busy times to regain a sense of control when your daily routine seems uncontrollable.

calving season, keep these tips in mind to keep communication flowing and reduce potential conflict:

BE PATIENT It seems there is always something that needs to be done to prepare for the arrival of the next calf, thus taking time to communicate means being patient in the situation and focusing on the issue at hand. If a situation arrives that needs to be talked through, patiently do so to find the solution. Jumping to conclusions is easy to do when time is limited and the to-do list long but addressing the other individual in a loud voice or with lots of emotion will immediately put them on the defense. Choose your words

LISTEN INTENTLY Stressful times can accentuate feelings and emotions. Show your respect by attentively listening to the others’ viewpoints. Not only is listening important but entering a conversation with an open mind is also helpful. Be in tune with understanding if you are listening with pre-conceived thoughts or emotions rather than intently listening with an open mind to the words expressed. Aim to address the issue as early as possible. Keep in mind that sometimes listening does not always mean focusing on verbal cues. Watch for body language or tone of voice that might be indicators of potential frustrations. Conflict may not always be bad because discussion and disagreement may lead to a creative solution, but conflict that is not addressed remains just that — conflict. Unaddressed conflict will drain the life out of the employee or employer and out of the business.

CHECK IN REGULARLY

CLARIFY EXPECTATIONS

This is easy to say and difficult to do when calves need to be nursed, tagged and treated not to mention cows need to be moved. Supervisors who strive to have a consistent working relationship with their teams are not the ones who find out about the frustrations or disappointments when their employees decide to quit in the height of calving. Employers and supervisors, like leaders, need to empower the relationship they have with their teams to create an open environment for discussion and do so regularly. In some cases, we are far removed from the employees or disconnected from family members to the point; we don’t even realize conflict is brewing.

In busy times, it is even more important to clarify expected behaviors, job responsibilities, and procedures. Unclear expectations result in confusion and disappointment. Most individuals feel more confident in their roles when they understand their expectations. Don’t let assumptions take over. Assuming extra bedding was put down because you heard the forecast is calling for frigid temperatures overnight or you have access to the records and know what cows need to be moved up to the barn, but you didn’t share this with others around the ranch creates uncertainty and uneasiness.

For example, if you’re taking shifts on night-watch, determine a time when you are both at the ranch to take 5-10 minutes to catch up. No doubt, you need to keep each other in the loop about issues related to the newborn calves, so take an extra few minutes to ask: How are you holding up? Are there things we need to adjust to reduce stress? What is working; what isn’t? Questions like these allow for input, making individuals feel like their viewpoints matter and that you care about not only their work but their health during such a stressful time.

APPRECIATE DIFFERENCES In the August 2019 issue of The Stockman, my column explained how valuable it is to understand what motivates us and those we are working alongside on the ranch or in the family. In times of stress and conflict, understanding how you can bridge the gap in the differences of personality types to create a more positive working relationship will lay the groundwork for reaching a faster solution. No two individuals are going to react to a situation the same, especially those with opposite personality characteristics.

wisely. Don’t bring in issues from the past, such as mistakes your employee or family-member might have made during calving last year; that is water under the bridge. Focus on the here and now and how you can make the current situation more productive.

MAKES IMPROVEMENT IN COMMERCIAL

hange is inevitable and change C is good. Going from dairy cows

to beef cows is a drastic change and one that Iowa producer Adam Glienke is glad he made. Glienke, along with his wife

RED ANGUS HERD Amy, have a commercial Red Angus herd with his parents Brian and Cindy Glienke. Until 2014, the family milked cows, but due to a decline in profits at the dairy, they decided to quit milking and switch to beef cows. At that time,

Glienke purchased a small group of certified Red Angus heifers to start his beef herd. “We had dealt with other breeds when I purchased the Red Angus females. After getting them in production it was clear they were the ones we wanted more of because they had a great disposition and mothering ability,” Glienke said.

March 2020

In the past five years, the herd has grown to just short of 200 cows. While he and Amy have their cows and his parents have theirs, all the cattle are run together and treated the same.

48

“It’s a true family operation. We all work together to get everything done,” Glienke said. “Dad and I couldn’t do all the breeding, calving, ultrasounding and everything else without the help of my wife and mom. Amy above Adam, Amy and Albie Glienke right Some crossbreeding has been used in the herd to add hybrid vigor and pounds to the calves, but the majority of the breeding of the herd is Red Angus.

of disease immunity through colostrum. Vaccinations are given pre-breeding and at pregnancy checking time. Proper worming also allows cows to perform to their best.

Heifers start calving the last part of January, followed by cows the last part of February. At birth, calves are weighed, given a mineral shot, a 7-way blackleg vaccine and a respiratory vaccine, as well as having navels sprayed with iodine. Weights are taken on the calves at birth and weaning to better understand the genetics and performance of the herd.

The health of cows is also important, as they provide a lot

Health and nutrition go hand in hand. Silage and haylage are made from some of their 1,800 acres of farmland, which includes corn, soybean and alfalfa in the northwest Iowa counties of Cherokee and Buena Vista.

A clean environment at birth is very important for good health until weaning. Prior to sending cows to grass, calves are all run through the chute again for vaccinations. Bulls are then banded and implanted. “We take pride in the

above The Glienkes are a true family operation with 2-yearold Albie being the third generation.

“Calves will go straight on feed at weaning and keep eating since they are familiar with having feed as part of their daily diet,” Glienke said. “We usually wean around September 1 to get thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

a full 60 days of preconditioning prior to delivery time.” The Glienkes have been selling their steer calves on video sales with Superior Livestock for November 1 delivery. Heifers are retained for replacements in the herd. “We usually keep about 50 to 75 heifers to add to our herd. Since we’ve been growing the size of our herd quickly, we have kept nearly all the heifers as replacements,” he said.

Cows are with bulls for two estrous cycles after AI and heifers are given one cycle after AI with the bulls. Ultrasound pregnancy checking is done about 90 days post-breeding to determine management groups. Glienke wants to keep a narrow calving season, thus the shorter time with bulls after AI. Some crossbreeding has been used in the herd to add hybrid vigor and pounds to the calves, but the majority of the breeding of the herd is Red Angus. The high per-

centage of Red Angus bloodlines in the herd improves carcass traits which is important as the majority of commercial calves are fed out. “We need to be sure to continue to provide good beef for consumers,” Glienke said. “Our calf buyer will send us carcass information when they are sent to harvest so we can see how our cattle perform on the rail.”

below Red Angus females are Glienke’s cow of choice because of their great disposition and mothering ability.

March 2020

Glienke tags his calves with the

Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tag once they are weaned and in the feedlot. Being able to sell calves as certified Red Angus guarantees to the buyer that the genetics of the cattle are at least 50% Red Angus and that they will perform in the feedyard. Identifying their Red Angus genetic make-up is also useful when extra heifers are sold as replacements.

THE KEY TO CALF HEALTH A

product, try to get 200 grams of IgG into the calf for total replacement. If a producer gives about 100 grams at 2 hours after birth, plan on giving another 100 grams of IgG by 6-8 hours of age if the calf has not gotten up to nurse by then. Also, the earlier the colostrum is given, the better the results. The normal guideline is that colostrum should be given in the first 24 hours, but in reality it needs to be consumed before 12 hours of age to receive the most benefit. Just figure the gut is the most open to receiving antibodies from colostrum at birth and will be shut down from adsorbing antibodies by 12 hours after birth. With these guidelines, it is a literal race against time to get the calf to consume colostrum and should be given the high-

est priority. When calves fail to consume enough colostrum, it is called “Failure of Passive Transfer. If a producer has had to treat a lot of calves in the past or is currently treating a lot of newborns, it is best to review procedures in the calving barn to make sure calves are nursing soon enough and often. One thing I feel is very important, is to get the cow and calf paired up quickly. If they are calving in a large group, ideally they could be penned off where they can pair up and bond for the first 12-24 hours. This gives the calf plenty of opportunity to nurse as often as it wants. If you move pairs too soon or too often, it can result in the calf not nursing as much as it needs to. If you suspect you have calves not nursing enough colostrum, there are blood tests that can measure the antibody levels in the calf. Testing a batch of calves 18-48 hours after birth would be a good way to monitor how well the herd is doing for colostrum intake. This is something your veterinarian can help you with and can give

March 2020

s we start the spring calving season, one of the most common issues we deal with is newborn calf sickness. The most important thing to remember is that colostrum intake at birth is the key to calf health. Calves that do not take in enough colostrum at birth not only can be more prone to neonatal calf disease, they likely will have more problems with illness later in life and probably will be less likely to perform to their genetic potential. As a rule of thumb, if a calf does not nurse within 2 hours of birth it should be bottle fed or tubed with colostrum at that time. Use colostrum milked from the cow or there are some very good commercial replacer products available. If you use a commercial replacement

some good information to base decisions on.

The other thing to keep in mind is that colostrum is full of sugars that help to feed and establish the proper type of microflora in the calf’s GI tract. The proper microflora is a large part of the calf’s immunity, and if it is out of balance, can make the calf more prone to various GI infections. The other benefit is the local immunity that colostrum will provide as the gut is bathed in antibodies for various infectious agents. If a commercial replacement is used we like to use a products made from actual colostrum. It is hard

to duplicate everything that real colostrum already does so well. All the immunoglobulins, fats, and sugars play a role in getting the calf off to the best start for long term health. As a final thought, all the pre-calving scour prevention vaccinations work by building antibodies in the cow’s colostrum. The only way they benefit the calf is through the colostrum they ingest. If you think any of these ideas are part of your newborn calf problems, work with your local veterinarian to review post-calving procedures and possibly test calves for IgG levels to develop a baseline of what is going on in the herd. learn more collisionembryo.com

Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PC in Rockwell City, IA.

March 2020

The other thing to keep in mind is that when things are perfect, a calf is only adsorbing about 40% of the antibodies in the colostrum. If a calf is stressed, it will reduce the adsorption to 1020% of the antibodies. This can even lead to failure of passive transfer on calves we think have consumed enough colostrum. Probably one of the most common stresses is chilling. If calves are chilled, get them warmed up before giving colostrum to increase the adsorption rate. Also dystocia can be a traumatic stress. The other thing that can cause reduced adsorption is oral contamination with fecal material. Knowing this makes sanitation in the calving area even more important. While these are common sense

ideas, it is easy to underestimate the long term effects of reduced colostrum adsorption. All of these situations make early colostrum intake essential to saving these calves.

From my mom. She was not only one of the sweetest people you would ever meet, she was a wonderful cook and baker. She always made three square meals a day for my dad, two brothers, sister and myself, plus anyone else who happened to stop by. She was also our 4-H Cooking Leader and taught us how to measure properly, by sifting the flour, leveling off the cups and measuring spoons. We were always busy with our livestock projects before the County Fair, but she always made sure my sister and I had cooking projects ready too.

Favorite tips and tricks?

I love to be creative when I’m cooking, or not use a recipe at all! LOL! Although it makes it hard to duplicate! My favorite tip is use all real butter (no shortening) and double the vanilla in cookie recipes - especially chocolate chip cookies. It makes them melt in your mouth!

What is your favorite thing to make?

I like to bring Barbecue Meatballs to Christmas gatherings. Seems like we always have plenty of beef in the freezer, and it allows me to use my creativity and make several variations. The Toffee Bars are another favorite. They are quick & easy, plus, I have the recipe memorized!

What is your favorite job in the kitchen?

It used to be baking with my kids when they were little. Now, it’s baking cookies with my granddaughters. It’s always fun gathering around the kitchen island with them and other friends. Trying to keep Bruce from eating all the chocolate chip cookie dough is always fun too. Now, after 35 years, I just put a couple spoonfuls in a cup & give it to him. He loves cookie dough!

My husband, Bruce, and I started Cannon Valley Ranch as newlyweds. Our first farm was located on the shore of Lake Sakatah by Morristown, MN. The Cannon River flows through the lake, so we started ‘Cannon Valley Chianina’ and purchased 10 crossbred heifers from my family. A few years passed & we had three children. Bruce was studying the seedstock business & liked the Angus breed from a purebred perspective. It also had an outstanding junior program for Lindsay, Aaron, & Taylor. So, in 2000 we sold many of our commercial cows & bought our first registered Angus female from Three Trees Angus Ranch. In 2001 we were able to purchase a larger farm near Goodhue, MN (still in the Cannon River Valley) and moved a little closer to our families in Wisconsin. We have an extensive embryo & A.I. program and will breed about 150 females this year. Our herd includes our registered Angus females, plus commercial females used for embryo recipients. Our son, Taylor, joined the operation and has also purchased the neighboring farm. All three of us work off the farm - Bruce is a Crop Protection Territory Manager for Winfield United, I am a Beef Nutritionist for Ag Partners, and Taylor is a meat cutter. We are fortunate to have a very reliable hired man, Derek Stehr, otherwise known as ‘Turbo’. We are working on becoming more diversified by doing some custom feeding and marketing some of our own high-quality Angus beef - with Taylor employed as a meat cutter it is a perfect fit! learn more cannonvalleyranch.com

Sale Barn Study

A review of the current cattle market.

contributed article by Kirk Lynch Lynch Livestock Inc. and Humeston Livestock Exchange, Humeston, Iowa

humestonlivestockexchange.com

UNCERTAINTY BUT OPTIMISTIC There has been a little bit of

uncertainty with the Coronavirus outbreak in China and new cases popping up in the States and across the world. We have seen the markets affected as a direct result of this. We have been told that herd expansion has stopped, and we should see fewer numbers. So, if we keep our weights in check, we have a great reason for optimism when demand starts to pick up. Right now, the markets are demand-driven, and if we can pick up some export, there is a tremendous upside to the cattle markets.

March 2020

The fat cattle market steadily declined over the past few weeks, nothing drastic, but $1-2 lower each week adds up quickly. The Choice and Prime cattle are most certainly bringing a premium over Select cattle in the barns. I think we will see the fat cattle market

66

rebound quickly in late February through March and into spring until we start getting into more significant numbers of fats ready to move. The cash market has been strong as the weather affected some of the numbers coming into the barns. The feeder cattle market has been steady and hasn’t been affected compared to other parts of the cattle business. I have seen a lot of feeder cattle sold over the past couple of months that make a lot of sense and pencil out nicely. With the drop in the market, especially in the futures that have declined, it is harder to find cattle that pencil out where the futures currently stand. I honestly think that the cash markets will be higher than what the futures say; with that said, I completely understand why some people are giving a little extra for feeder cattle right

Kirk Lynch, Lynch Livestock Inc., Waucoma, IA Kirk is the Beef Division manager for Lynch Livestock Inc. and oversees all aspects of their backgrounding and cattle feeding operations throughout Iowa and Kansas. He is also deeply involved in the newly re-opened Humeston Livestock Exchange in Humeston, Iowa. In addition, Kirk and his wife Mary own and operate Heartland Simmentals in Northeast Iowa, which is a seed stock operation that consists of 500 registered Simmental and Angus cows. They have three children: Gabrielle, 6, Brayden, 4, and Vivian, 2.

now. I have seen some heavier weight heifers that have been good buys, while the light cattle and feeders have been bringing a fair price. The bred cow/heifer market is really starting to pick up steam. We have seen a pretty nice jump over the last month as buyers are looking at heifers closer to calving. I don’t think that this is going to change much. The cow and bull market has also made some improvement over that last month; I think this will continue for the next month as well. Hope everyone is having a safe winter and a great calving season - until next month!
