Editor’s Note

#morethanahobby #thestockman

resolutions. It’s the time of year we look back and reflect on ourselves, our goals, our achievements, and our shortcomings. We are supposed to resolve to do better, forget our failings and start anew. New Year’s resolutions annoy me if I’m honest. We are all taught to do our best, so doesn’t that mean resolve to do better every day? For instance, I am one of those loathed late people. I know it, and I am reminded of it regularly. (Particularly by my sister, who is one of those loathed always prompt and always prepared people I envy.) But, I promise you, it is not for lack of trying. I try every day to be on time, some days are better than others, but each day I resolve to be a better version of myself. In each sale catalog you read, it often says something like, “this is our best set yet!” It seems redundant to say it every year, but isn’t that the point? We are all trying to breed a calf crop more impressive than the last, and no matter what life throws at us, we keep trying to do better for our customers and consumers. We don’t wait for the calendar to tell us when, we are already doing it. So, as you browse these pages, rest assured this is our best January issue yet! We offer a warm welcome to our newest herd consultants, Brigham Stewart and Megan Collison. Much of our team will be in Denver, so look us up. We are happy to answer any questions you might have.

fter serving in the Navy during World War II, Allen Frey returned home to work with his father, Ed, a cattle buyer, purchasing horses to be shipped overseas. He also worked with his future father-in-law, Vernon Bacon, on a threshing crew and did some grain farming as well. After harvesting a significant flax crop that was marketed for $10/bushel, he was able to take the proceeds and make a down payment on a parcel of land. He built a house, barn,

granary, and chicken house. Soon after the building process was completed, Allen purchased registered Angus cows with the help of his father’s involvement in the cattle market around the area. With this purchase of females, Frey Angus Ranch got its start. The ranch is located in north central North Dakota, at the bottom of the Mouse River Loop. The river begins in Canada, makes a loop in southern McHenry county, and returns to Canada. The area

has a variety of fertile farmland as well as marginal land that is best suited for grazing and forage production. The winters are usually long and harsh; however, the land is capable of producing abundant grass and forage. The cattle have to be hardy to thrive in this climate and adapt well in a different environment if sold to other regions. Allen’s three sons, Lynn, Arlen, and Edward, are the second-generation owners and operators of Frey Angus thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

Ranch. In the beginning, the ranch ran commercial cattle as well as dairy cattle. The dairy cattle left when the oldest brother, Lynn, went to college. The commercial cattle were replaced with registered Angus cows as their numbers increased, and the ranch expanded as the brothers returned to the operation. The brothers became actively involved in the operation when they took out a bank loan to purchase a bull calf at Erdmann Angus ranch for $3,700, in 1971. Their father promised them each a bull calf until the loan was repaid. The bull they bought, Marshall Pride 101, sired an exceptional calf crop the first year with his offspring THE STOCKMAN | thestockmanmag.com

dominating the North Dakota Winter show. In addition, a group of calves certified the bull as a Certified Meat Sire. The first son sold out of him at the North Dakota Bull Sale more than paid for the bull. Two other bulls entered in the Midland Bull Test sold for $5,000 and $10,000 respectively. In 1974, the herd had grown enough that the boys made the decision to host their first production sale. Prior to that, their father had maintained a registered cowherd but had not actively sold bulls. Allen’s wife, Arlyss, served as an integral part of the operation for many years. She is now 94 years old and

still enjoys hearing about the operation from the rest of the family. Allen passed away in 2011. The third generation of the Frey family has taken a leadership role on the ranch. Currently, Lynn’s son, Lance, and Arlen’s son, Dustin, are involved in the operation. Lynn’s daughter, Shannon, and Arlen’s daughter, Lynsey, help with advertising and sale preparations. There is very little help hired except for help with the Denver cattle. Lynsey’s husband, Eric Aberle, does some custom seeding and harvesting for the ranch. “At Frey Angus Ranch, our father, Allen Frey, always put his sons out front and let them make decisions. the same with our sons. They have great ideas that generally come with more work and a financial investment; however, we wouldn’t have it any other way.” Lynn said, “There’s always plenty of work to do, so we don’t have time to argue about what needs to be done.”

20

Frey’s philosophy in raising cattle for the market today has not changed much from Allen Frey’s need to raise the kind of cattle that would excel in a commercial market. Allen’s emphasis was always on the female. He would never sell off the top end of the heifer calf crop. He said they were always worth more to retain

in the herd than sell to anyone else. He was always searching for the next herd bull that would advance the cowherd and would often find that bull within his own herd, out of a top producing cow. In later years, he gave that responsibility to his sons knowing that they would do what they had been taught. All decisions would need to meet his approval as well as a consensus of group. Early on, Allen Frey, appreciated the Angus cow as a problem-free and polled individual that would wean off heavy calves. He also used Angus bulls that possessed a

larger frame score and provided more growth in their offspring. It was necessary to produce more pounds and growthy calves to counteract the stigma of the shorter, smaller framed Angus calves that were being discriminated against in the 1950s and early 60s. While Lynn was traveling the country on North Dakota State University (NDSU) judging teams in the late 1960s, he sensed that the cattle back home were the kind that the industry was searching for. A trip to Bon View Angus and Erdmann Angus in South Dakota eventually led to the purchase of Marshall Pride 101 to mate with the predominately

Eileenmere and western Canadian-bred females back home. Frey Angus Ranch developed a herd of registered Red Angus cows that reached over 100 head, resulting from one registered cow born of black parents in 1989. They were successful in winning several local pen shows as well as a number of awards at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. The decision was made in 2017 to disperse the Red Angus and increase the black Angus herd through retention of more Angus heifer calves. This decision was based on the need to concentrate on the one breed that was the “bread and butter”

of the operation. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), and now enhanced EPDs have been and continue to be important in the Frey breeding decisions. They are and should be used in breeding decisions for herd improvement and not solely for marketing purposes. “Long before the breed developed EPDs for docility, fertility, foot structure, carcass and $ Values, these were selection traits of utmost importance to us and our customers as they deserve nothing less. Raising cattle with balanced EPDs that meet several minimal requirements, with cattle that have a certain Frey look and are sound and

correct is possible but not always easy. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it,” commented Lynn. Freys market their bulls as yearlings in early February. This requires that they calve in late January, February, and early March. With earlier calving dates, they are able to collect weaning, gain, and carcass data by ultrasound for their bull customers. By synchronizing and artificially inseminating (AI) the cows in groups and utilizing embryo transfer (ET), they are able to keep the calving window tight. Registered cows that don’t measure up with numbers and/ or production are shifted to

the recipient herd for ET. The sale bulls are developed on the ranch and cooperative herds are not used for additional production. Freys rely on corn silage and forage production to maintain their cowherd and grow and develop the bulls and replacement females. They purchase very little feedstuffs other than supplements.

In recent years, we have made sales to seedstock producers as well as AI studs from interest generated from our exposure in the carload and pen shows at the National Western in Denver. We compare the pen shows to a poker hand: t is not that difficult to get a high card in a draw, however, it’s more difficult to get a pair or three of a kind. Getting four of a kind is even more difficult and generally necessary to be competitive in the pen show. Putting a carload together is an even greater challenge and possibly comparable to a rundown in a pinochle card

2020 will be the 45th annual production sale that has been held at the ranch since the very first sale. In recent years, DVAuction (DV) has been utilized to broadcast the videos of the sale offering on the big

screen televisions and on the DV website. The cattle sell in catalog order to make the sale easy to follow for the customers and sale staff. Before going to the TV sale format, not all the brothers had ever seen the cattle sell live, because they were busy out back bringing the cattle up to the ring. They now get to enjoy viewing the sale as it happens. The Frey customers have accepted this method of selling as well as purchasing on-line. Lynn states, “The cattle are mainly sold to commercial cattlemen whom we feel are some of the best in the country.

game. Uniformity and quality have always been necessary to us.” Highlights that will be cherished by the family include raising FAR Krugerrand 410H, and winning Grand Champion Bull at the NWSS 2002. More recently, Freys exhibited the Champion Pen of Three bulls at the NWSS in 2016. The sale of Cowboy Logic to Hoover Angus and Select Sires was also a financial reward that was greatly appreciated in 2019. FAR Krugerrand 410H has made a major impact in the herd in recent years through the production of his granddaughters. The bull that sired the championship pen of three bulls at the 2016 NWSS, Young Dale Xcaliber 32X, and in turn, Freys Appearance, who was a member of that pen, has been instrumental in the herd’s recent success. Dams that have contributed greatly have been sired by Sitz Upward 307 and Barstow Cash. The daughters of Frey’s Appearance are now taking the front seat as they come into production and Freys will calve out a number of them.

PREPARING FOR CALVING For some the calving season

is almost upon us, while for others, the start of the calving season is still a few months away. The following are practices to consider in preparing for the upcoming calving season.

January 2020

1. Pay attention to nutrition needs of bred heifers or cows prior to calving. Adequate body condition at the time of calving for young females and mature cows is important as it impacts stamina during delivery of the calf, colostrum quality, calf vigor, and also impacts subsequent rebreeding. Adequate nutrition during the last trimester of pregnancy and especially the last 50 to 60 days prior to calving is important. Two-year-old heifers and three-year-old cows are vulnerable during this time period. These young females are still growing themselves while growing a calf inside

30

them. As this calf grows and takes up room, rumen capacity is impacted and the amount of feed the young female can eat is reduced. The impact of this condition can be compounded when this time period prior to calving coincides with bitter cold weather and available forage that is low in energy and protein. Body condition can deteriorate rapidly under these conditions. 2. Review with your veterinarian your herd health plan. The production system should be discussed, identifying critical control points where management could reduce risk and effectively improve herd health. Utilize treatment records from last year to identify particular areas where problems occurred. Use this information to develop a plan to specifically address management options to miti-

gate health problems that have historically been an issue. If needed records have not been kept, what records should be kept in the upcoming year that would provide information that would be helpful in making management and husbandry decisions? 3. Examine calving facilities making sure they are in good working order. Frequently it has been 9 to 10 months since calving facilities have been used. Inspect gates, pens, alleys and head catches, fixing or replacing broken items. Good lighting is an important part of a calving facility. Check lights and have replacement bulbs on hand. Thoroughly clean calving areas, pens and barns. Starting the calving season with clean areas can help slow the development of health problems related to “dirty areas that can encourage

above Planning and preparing for the calving season can help to minimize calf loss, increasing the percent calf crop at weaning. Photo credit Troy Walz. thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

4. Check your calving supplies. Make sure you have on hand plastic sleeves, obstetrical lube, obstetrical chains or straps, esophageal feeders and calf feeding bottles. Have a conversation with your veterinarian about products they would recommend that you have on hand to address common treatments for calving related problems. This can include things such as oxytocin, and antimicrobials. Products to address post-calving complications such as calcium solutions and electrolytes could be beneficial as well. Having these products readily available allows for timely use and can enhance the likelihood that animals will recover when treatment is needed. Test flashlights or spotlights to make sure they are working as well. Inventory halters, ropes, and other tools that may be needed. Make sure the fetal extractor (calf puller) is clean and working properly. 5. Review the stages of parturition (calving) and understand when assistance is needed. There are several good Extension resources available to producers to help them identify and understand the stages of calving. “Assisting the Beef Cow at Calving Time” from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and “Calving and Handling Calving Difficulties” by Robert Mortimer DVM Emeritus Faculty from Colorado State University are two such resources. Review how to

THE STOCKMAN | thestockmanmag.com

correct abnormal presentations and assist the heifer or cow during calving. Knowing your limitations and when it is time to call your veterinarian could save the calf’s life, the cow’s life or both. 6. Have colostrum or colostrum replacement products on hand. Absorption of quality colostrum is critical for passive immunity. The calf’s ability for absorption of immunoglobulin across the intestine decreases rapidly 6 to 12 hours after birth. Therefore it is critical that the calf receive colostrum during this time. It is a good practice to immediately milk out a heifer or cow when she is assisted at calving and provide this colostrum to the calf. When possible, have the calves nurse to get this colostrum. If quality or quantity of the colostrum is a concern, other sources of colostrum or colostrum replacement products should be used. Use caution when bringing outside sources of colostrum into the herd as disease transfer can occur. The best source of colostrum is from within your own herd. Colostrum replacement products can be a good option to utilize when calves are not vigorous at birth, after a prolonged calving event, cold stress or where there is poor maternal bonding. Visit with your veterinarian about which colostrum replacement products are best for your operation. 7. Have a plan and equipment for warming calves if

calving during cold weather. Calves born during cold, wet conditions can quickly succumb to hypothermia. Have facilities, tools and supplies on hand to deal with this type of event. For mild hypothermia, (body temperature between 94 and 100°F) giving a calf warm, body temperature colostrum or colostrum replacement products along with drying the calf off with towels and warm air can quickly bring a calf’s temperature back to normal. For extreme hypothermia a combination of warm colostrum with a warm bath can be used. Calves should be dry, alert and have a normal body temperature before being returned to their mother. 8. Plan to provide wind protection along with a clean, dry environment. Wet, muddy conditions are stressful both to cows and calves. This kind of environment also provides a situation where disease proliferation is more likely to occur. A fresh crop of calves is something cow-calf producers look forward to each year. Having a plan and preparing ahead of time for the calving season can help to minimize calf loss and reduce stress on those caring for the cowherd. Leading the Way

How leadership works on the ranch.

contributed article by B. Lynn Gordon Leader Consulting

REIMAGINE THE FUTURE 2020is here! It’s hard to

believe. We start the year with the same challenge we have every year, trying to remember to write the correct year on our checks. Usually, by mid-February, I begin to accomplish this regularly. With a new year comes other new challenges and possibilities. We have the opportunity to develop or refine our goals and vision for ourselves, our business, and our families. Listening to Terry Jones, founder and former CEO of Travelocity, recently at the National Angus Convention in Reno, Nev., opened my eyes and those of fellow cattle producers as he discussed his experiences developing startup companies, many of which were grounded in technology. Jones, who was also chairman of Kayak.com, a company that was later purchased by Priceline. com for $1.8 billion, has wit-

nessed the rise and fall of many startup businesses. Even his own. Experiencing failure in his most recent startup after five successful business ventures has reminded him to not dwell on the failures. “If you don’t fail, you’re not trying hard enough,” says Jones. To him, failure means you are constantly learning and exercising your discovery muscle. “It’s how you pick yourself back up and continue to experiment that will result in long-term success.” He explained, Steve Jobs was successful in his launch of the iPhone, because of his clear vision of the desired goal and unwavering focus on getting there. “Those who never settle, make the difference.” Jones’s career path began as a receptionist in a travel agency business almost 50-years ago. Today, at 70-years-old, he is called a digital disruptor, someone willing to take the chance to adopt new

technologies and think outside the box. “Change is inevitable ̶ but growth is up to you,” he says.

Innovation or Disruption “You know where you need to go, so adopt the technology to get you there.” He challenged agricultural producers to ask the tough questions, maybe the change needed on your ranch, your operation, or your business is a whole new model. It’s easy to put up the roadblocks to change and history demonstrates we often do that. The age-old reference of, ‘but we have always done it this way’ results in shutting down new ideas and harnessing the potential from those around you. Will family members or employees continue to offer up ideas, if they always get this same response? How can enthusiasm and a growth-mindset develop in this contained environment?

________ “You call it a disruption because you didn’t do it. If you did it, it would be an innovation.” - Terry Jones, Travelocity founder

_____

Is a new technology developed by another company or business an innovation or disruption? Interestingly, Jones describes it this way. “In business, you call it a disruption because you didn’t do it, create it, invent it, or implement it. If you had done it – it would have been an innovation.” To this point, Jones shared two very telling examples. Before the existence of Travelocity.com, people purchased airline tickets from a registered travel agent. Travelocity disrupted that tradi-

tional method of commerce and shifted the buying role of the airline ticket, directly to the person. Furthermore, he explained, Apple didn’t invent the cell phone or the watch – they just made them a whole lot better.

person or one new idea can make all the difference.” In family-based agricultural businesses, this means taking the extra time to listen to each other, discuss opportunities and ideas, allowing for open communication and creation of a vision.

The basis of innovation

Building the right team is one element of a productive culture, but it’s more than just that. It requires a continual focus on creating a culture for the right people to succeed. For example, a common pitfall when a project fails is to blame the people involved in the project. Jones suggests a mindset of “kill the project, not the people,” is one way to encourage unity. “It’s like sports. Coaches don’t just throw people off the team after one loss, they focus on making the team better, they strive to learn from the loss, and build up from there.”

As we enter the new year, how can we aim for innovation over disruption. Jones believes the basis of innovation is two pillars – culture and team. “If you get culture and team right, you have put gas in the tank and are ready to move ahead in your business.” How does one do this? It all begins with hiring the right mix of people. Hiring people with outside ideas, fresh perspectives, people that will bring diversity to you and your ideas. The easy thing to do is hire people or work with people that are like you. “What is more dangerous is not evolving.” Established organizations or companies often view disruptions as a threat. Do you find yourself asking – how can they (the competition) do that? When you really should be asking yourself, how can we do that? Jerry and Shelly Delaney and their family, sons Marty, Michael, Nick, and daughters Katie and Jaci are devoted to the Hereford breed and wouldn’t have it any other way. “Hereford was and is our choice,” says Jerry, who grew up with Herefords when his dad, the wellknown and one-of-kind, Jack ‘Pops’ Delaney introduced Jerry

to the registered cattle industry. Jack started his long run in the Hereford business in 1936 when his first Hereford heifer received a purple ribbon at the Minnesota State 4-H Show. The establishment of Delaney Herefords, Inc., Lake Benton, MN, began in 1969 when Jack and his wife, Dorothy, and their six children chartered their way in the purebred cattle industry and built the Delaney name which today is synonymous with high-quality Hereford genetics.

“Herefords fit the best in our unpredictable environment. They need to be hardy, fleshy and be able to adapt to the sub-zero winter temperatures and mud we deal with in the spring,” says Jerry. Nick, who is full-time on the ranch, commented the past two years has been more difficult than usual for cow/calf production in the upper Midwest having to fight mother nature and the curveballs she continues to throw. “The Hereford cow sure has the opportunity to shine in these times,” says Nick.

Embryo transfer is extensively incorporated into the program allowing for the ability to build on maternal strengths of cows like 45C and other leading females.

About 25% of the calves born annually are the result of embryo transfer, but their focus doesn’t deviate from a high producing cowherd with balance.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM A RECENT CASE T

his Fall, we had a case that showed the benefits of parasite control. It was also a great example of why we do things a certain way.

A couple of side-notes on Long Range: if you want to use it, it is important to inject before going to pasture as it will help keep the fresh pasture from getting contaminated with parasites. Also, many producers will give Long Range to calves, but my concern here is calves are going to outgrow the dose you administer in May. This may lead to low dose exposure to Long Range and possible parasite resistance. Later this Fall, this same producer called with health issues in his weaned calves. There were 262 calves, and at this point, he had treated 26 head for respiratory problems and fever. On walkthrough, there were many more with cough, and it was hard to know where to stop pulling calves for treatment. All of these calves had been vaccinated prior to weaning. We talked about the possibility of a PIBVD calf being in the group. But, no calves had died, so there were none to post for di-

January 2020

We were called in September to examine some cows that had been pulled off pasture in southern Iowa. Many of the cows came off with low body condition scores, but four were extremely thin and had diarrhea. On physical exam, there were no obvious conclusions. All four were checked for Johnes, Bovine Leucosis, had a CBC and serum panel run, and fecal samples checked for parasites. All of the blood work came back negative, and nothing was too remarkable on the clinical pathology blood work, but the fecal samples from all four cows were loaded with parasites.

This producer had previously been giving Long Range to his cows but skipped this year as he didn’t feel the benefit outweighed the cost. In this case, one of the things that probably added to the explosion of parasites was the wet rainy weather we experienced this spring and summer. Under these conditions, parasites have a better chance to thrive in the environment. For a plan of action, the producer was going to inject all cows with injectable Dectomax. He also gave all the calves at side Dectomax and gave their preconditioning vaccines. Upon follow-up, the producer reported that the four thinnest cows, looked better the day after the Dectomax injection and had made a complete recovery.

agnostics. We decided to run all calves through the chute and mass treat with antibiotics due to the high morbidity rate. We also ran a PI-BVD test off ear notches from each calf in the group and performed tracheal washes on three calves that had not been treated with antibiotics. The results were not what I expected. All of the calves tested negative for PI-BVD. The samples from the tracheal washes only came back positive for M. hemolytica on a respiratory PCR panel. It was surprising since all of the calves had been vaccinated pre-weaning for M. hemolytica. On follow up with the producer, the calves all responded well to the mass treatment of antibiotics and looked to have recovered. We discussed what could have gone

wrong with the vaccine. There were two groups of calves, one group from a pasture in southern Iowa that were treated for parasites at the time they were vaccinated. The other group had been in a local pasture and did not receive any parasite treatment before weaning. The owner went back through his records and discovered 24 of the 26 calves that he first treated were from the local pasture, the group that did not receive parasite treatment at the time of vaccination. This really demonstrates how immunosuppressive parasites can be and in this case had suppressed the response to the vaccination. We have always recommended deworming calves when we initially vaccinate calves pre-weaning. Sometimes

producers question the timing since they are not deworming the cows and the calves are going to stay on pasture. But the main reason is to remove the immunosuppressive effects of parasites at the time of vaccination. I am always amazed how much calves will bloom up in 2-3 weeks when we give the booster vaccinations. Never underestimate the benefit of parasite control. As a final thought, when dealing with sick calves, consider having your veterinarian use tracheal washes for diagnostics if there are no dead calves to post. These are relatively easy to do with the right equipment and yield diagnostic information in a timely manner. learn more collisionembryo.com

f you’ve been in the cattle business long, you know the importance of a quality bull stud or donor collection facility. You also understand that the quality of care given to the cattle is of utmost importance to the owner of the breeding stock. But, not all bull studs are created equally; the Schrag family of Marion, South Dakota, found that out firsthand. In the past, when taking cattle to be collected or flushed, they were not always pleased with the condition and shape of the animals when they returned home. So, when the time came to open 605 Sires + Donors, cattle care

was the top priority of the new venture. About four years ago, Cory & Melissa Schrag saw the need for bull collection services in their area. The Schrags were not new to the sire and donor industry, having owned and operated Dakota Transfers, they provided breeders across South Dakota with embryo transfer and AI services for 15 years. Knowing they wanted things done just right, they sought out John Weston, of Weston Consulting, to guide them in the process of building a bull stud located 35 miles west of

Sioux Falls, South Dakota. John was instrumental in designing the facility that makes it easy to provide the high level of cattle care that was required by the Schrags. In January 2017, 605 Sires opened its doors. Then in 2018, they expanded to offer donor services and rebranded themselves ‘605 Sires + Donors’. 605 Sires + Donors offers quality sire and donor services and has become a satellite site for TransOva located in Sioux Center, Iowa. Cory and Melissa manage the billing, scheduling, and housing of the cows, while TransOva

an experienced staff that provides hands-on, individual care to all the animals housed in the facility. While cattle are at the 605, they are on the Concept Aid mineral program. “We have seen a nice bump in the fertility of the bulls and cows when collecting semen and embryos by using the Concept Aid Chelated mineral program,” states Cory. To assist customers in all their reproductive needs, including mineral and feed, the Schrags have become dealers for Umbarger Show Feeds, VitaFerm, and BioZyme, as well as, Sullivan Supply. With a holding capacity of about 105 sires, housing can be provided for the bulls year-round.

provides the donor services. In 2019, they performed approximately 385 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) collections, producing over 9,000 oocytes. Schrags offer their customers more than just the donor collection. With their herd of recipient cows, customers can purchase confirmed pregnant recips directly from 605 or utilize their connection and access the TransOva recipient herd as well.

Semen collection is performed on Mondays and Thursdays by appointment or walk-in. Breeders can also request collection of sexed semen, which is sent and sorted at TransOva. The boarding barn and collection area are designed to focus on the sires’ comfort and safety. The facility has a convenient drive-through, load-out alley that provides for quick and easy loading and unloading of cattle. 605 Sires was designed from the ground up, with the customer in mind. A revolutionary semen inventory database, Your605, allows customers the opportunity to track inventory and sire progress 24/7 by simply logging into their accounts.

605 Sires is a full-service semen collection center that will collect, freeze and store semen on valuable herd sires. With the brand new, state-of-the-art lab, featuring the Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) system, 605 will ensure customers’ valuable genetics are handled with the utmost care and quality control. The primary focus of the business is on beef cattle, but they also work with some dairy herds as well. The operation recently became certified to collect semen for international export and quarantine. They are now certified by the Certified Semen Services National Association of Animal

In addition to their AI and embryo experience, the Schrags are mainstays of the Shorthorn breed. Cory’s great grandfather, John Schrag, brought over Shorthorns from Russia to build the original herd. Three generations later, Cory and Melissa are still utilizing that foundation breeding productive Shorthorn and Maine-An-

I watched and learned from my mom, but I never would have dreamt I’d live so far from a grocery store and would be the source of meals for so many! After I was married I learned how to make large meals, sometimes very quickly, out of necessity!

Favorite tips and tricks?

I always make sure I plan a day ahead and have meat for two meals on hand. I brown large amounts of ground beef in the oven and freeze it to make spaghetti sauce, soup, or tacos on short notice.

What is your most requested dish or favorite thing to make?

We like enchilada casserole - a very quick and easy layered dish that goes a long way! I serve a large batch at branding every year.

What is your least favorite job in the kitchen?

Besides the clean up, I would have to say keeping the cupboards stocked is one of my least favorite jobs. I am constantly checking ingredients to make the next ‘grocery run’.

Sale Barn Study

A review of the current cattle market.

contributed article by Kirk Lynch Lynch Livestock Inc. and Humeston Livestock Exchange, Humeston, Iowa

humestonlivestockexchange.com

ell, 2019 is coming to a close, and it has been a year full of challenges in the cattle business. With that said, we can move forward into 2020 with new hope and optimism! Things are setting up for 2020 to be a pretty solid year for those of us in this business.

the barn and have begun seeing their prices increase as well. The cows and bulls have come up about $6-8 cwt over the past month or two. I fully expect this market to stay steady for the next couple months and then come up into late winter and early spring.

programs i.e., naturals, GAPs, NHTC. The calves that don’t meet one of those criteria have some great value in them from a purchaser standpoint. I think we will see an uptick in the feeder prices as we get through the holidays and into the New Year.

The fat cattle markets have continued to climb, especially in the barns. Generally, we have been seeing the fat prices being around $2-3 higher than the cash. I think we will see the fat cattle cash market to continue to rise until late winter and early spring, just like the board says it should. But, I am pretty optimistic that the cash prices may be better than what the board says in the next couple of months. And who knows the upper limit if we can finalize the trade deals with China and Japan.

The feeder cattle market is starting to show some pep after a very slow start this fall. We had a rough harvest where people had trouble getting feed and bedding made, but we’ve had a bit of a break now, and folks were able to get those things done. That, along with the strong fat cattle markets, have more people interested in placing some feeders. However, there are still some feeders that are worth the money and are in the black on their projections. The feeders that seem to top the market, like usual, are the big groups that are weaned and have a couple rounds of shots in them and/or qualify for value-added

If there is one weak market, it is the bred cow and heifer market. It has been a struggle all fall and going into winter. They would be a great investment; if you have the resources to handle them. With the way the next couple of years look in the cattle business, I think they will pay for themselves in a hurry.

We are starting to see more cull cows and bulls coming through
