Weʼre showing our true colours

Summer’s over and most people are turning their minds to the mellow shades of autumn. Here at Associated Weavers we think the trend for subtle colourways is about to be enhanced with the introduction of colour. That’s why we’re predicting a wonderful season of unprecedented colour ahead of us. And we know that where we lead, others will soon follow. New for October are two more collections that we’ve added to the ever-popular iSense range. • A new saxony which is a 2000gm heavywear domestic quality product, in seventeen glorious colours, with styles such as Morello, Quince and Shrimp designed to blend seamlessly with customers’ existing colour combinations.

Co lo u r s

• 1350gm super-soft saxony Seduction Royale, with colours like Dali, Hockney and Picasso, you can expect a big demand.

Both of these new collections are available in 4m and 5m widths, with full 20-year wear warranties. iSense is our unique 100% polyamide ‘bounce back’ fibre – the perfect product for combining exciting colour solutions with 21st century carpet technology to re-energise the carpet market. Contact us on 01422 431100, or email sales@awe.be alternatively contact your area manager for your sample lecterns or to view these new products. Then sit back and watch, as your store continues to perform with flying colours.

A busy stand and highly enjoyable, energetic and vibrant few days delighting our partners with new POS and product developments. New Lasting Luxury

New Sisal Weave & Rustic Jewels

Previewed this year and sporting a ‘Lux for Life’ on a stunning lectern was our major new product, the truly unique Lasting Luxury which is available from final quarter 2016. This super soft nylon in 65oz & 95oz is the very first, retail, soft touch solution dyed nylon in the market… yes, solution dyed, not piece dyed so has colour right through. Our Sales Team were very enthusiastic at the show using the ‘carrot and radish story’ to explain the important differences between stock dyed and piece dyed products. This beautiful product is bleach cleanable and pile recovery is absolutely superb so it offers outstanding appearance retention. It also comes with a lifetime warranty against pile reversal & delamination and 15 years Stain and wear warranty.

To meet the continued and increasing demand for natural and richly textured products, we have developed two refreshed and sophisticated ranges. We are currently launching and have healthy stocks of Sisal Weave which retains the existing Classic design and a new design Style with a new colour palette. Rustic Jewels launches in the final quarter 2016 and in our opinion is the best British made 50/50 in the market place. It retains the existing Harmony Design and a new exciting Herringbone design that could be seen on the floor of the stand giving a stunning impact.

New Tudor Twist What could be more Distinctly Victoria than the company’s flagship 80/20 Wool Rich Collection and we proudly presented the new display and enjoyed the opportunity to once again reiterate the superior yarns now being used with a current stock profile to meet demand.

Carpet&FlooringReview

Carpet&FlooringReview Flatweave fashions

Consistently recognised for the quality of its products and customer satisfaction levels, Louis de Poortere adds new emphasis to its broadloom design with the 100% wool Haute Couture ‘WW’ collection.

First showcased at this year’s Decorex, Haute Couture encapsulates beauty and elegance as well as comfort and value, credentials expected of every flatweave leaving the Louis de Poortere production line. Now homeowners and specifiers can enjoy this far-reaching portfolio in 100% wool, Haute Couture ‘WW’ championing this fibre in its very highest quality. Jean-Francois Fontaine, Art Director at Louis de Poortere, explains the inspiration behind Haute Couture’s versatile design bank: “Imagine a Georgian home with classical style, a cottage hotel with warmly panelled rooms, modernist offices with geometric contours, a Haussmann apartment in Paris mellowed by the years or even a London or New York loft in post-industrial style. Haute Couture makes all these diverse decorating styles accessible, with colours and designs that can be both sympathetic and adventurous.” Choose from ‘WW’ Diamond, Ari or chevron Zig or Zag designs as your floor experiences an inspirational overhaul. Just as in fashion, where clothing is created to seduce and please, Haute Couture is set to become the trend of home interior textile design, and what better way to include than in sumptuous wool form with a unique lustre that only this fibre can bring. Louis de Poortere prides itself on carpet practicalities, despite Haute Couture’s ‘high fashion’ name and an inevitable focus on looks. A collection designed to dress the floors of apartments, houses and offices alike, Haute Couture is suitable for commercial and heavy domestic application, arriving in a 2.95-metre width with high quality felt backing to enhance durability, sound resistance and simplicity of installation. Edging ahead

Edel Telenzo’s new Rugs and Runners Collection continues to push the boundaries of semi-bespoke flooring, fuelled by the almost limitless options available.

With a headline offering of 88 different edges, this made-to-order rug and runner service, available in combination with any Edel Telenzo wall-to-wall carpet, is setting the benchmark in diversity and choice. Whether the room is large or small, contemporary or traditional, the Rugs and Runner Collection has the perfect border option for any carpet and any interior. Ideal for larger rugs and statement stair runners, a generous 5cm wide option is available in leather, felt and linen finishes, while a more subtle 1cm wide cotton option will suit rugs of all sizes. Whatever the width or material, there is also an enviable choice when it comes to colour selection. First, boasting 46 shades, the cotton edge offers the broadest colour spectrum. From naturals that provide a gentle addition to any of Edel Telenzo’s broadloom options, to bright oranges and reds for a real statement in style, this 1cm wide choice has something for everyone. With the 5cm linen, homeowners looking for whites, creams, on-trend greys, bold blues or striking reds need look no further than the 19-strong options contained within. For those seeking a real touch of luxury, turn to the 14 colours available in 5cm wide leather, with light greys, browns and darks all featured. Finally, the impressive 88 options are completed with nine options available in felt, with plain and heather tastes all catered to. Mark Rooney, UK sales director at Edel Telenzo, elaborates: “During the planning of the Rugs and Runners Collection we set out to deliver a solution based on clear and precise goals. We were looking for something unique that would deliver flooring and interior retailers a must-have, go-to solution for all their rug requirements. “Therefore, we wanted a concept without compromise, and opening up the service to any of our broadloom carpets was just the start. Huge emphasis was placed on the edging options available, and by offering 88 designs across multiple finishes, we believe we have the perfect platform to deliver rugs or runners for any interior.” T 01422 374 417 or 371 226

A star is re-born

Startwist Edition is the latest range from Lano Carpets to undergo a revamp, a move designed to maintain its position as one of the UK’s most popular collections. Keeping six of its best-selling colours, Lano Carpets has added eight new plain and heather shades, all of which will help to bring Startwist Edition in-line with the latest interior trends, while also providing a timeless appeal to the range.

However, the real developments to the collection come in its construction, with the use of the latest in polypropylene fibre technology to enhance performance. The new Startwist Edition uses 100% Lanoset 2-ply polypropylene solution dyed fibre to produce a strong 30oz twist carpet ideal for all areas of the home. Boasting a ten-year stain and seven-year wear warranty, Startwist Edition is also bleach cleanable for peace of mind, non-allergenic, moth proof, fade resistant and available in four and five-metre widths. All are great attributes that are sure to help it maintain its longstanding appeal for years to come, as Birger Karlsson, UK & Ireland Sales Director, explains: “For over two decades, Startwist has been one of Lano Carpets’ best performing collections, a success story built on delivering popular colours, ease of maintenance and great value. However, we constantly look at the ways we can improve all our collections, and when it came to Startwist Edition, we believed that its appeal could be broadened even further with the use of the latest high-performance polypropylene fibre. “The result is an improved collection that maintains all the core values that have made it such a success, but one that now provides even better performance with a new on-trend colour bank. We are confident that these enhancements will be welcomed by our retail and housebuild partners.” T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Twisty zig-zag

One of Balta’s most popular collections, Moorland Twist, has undergone a re-fresh, with exciting new enhancements made to consolidate its position as a household favourite.

Famed for its co-ordinating plains and stripes, the new look Moorland Twist collection now comprises three forms. Four new tones are added to eight original plains that remain. This new bank of 12 colours is joined by two new coordinating stripes and, for the first time, two zig-zag designs that are sure to make this collection a real talking point. The result is a new StainSafe Moorland Twist, Stripes and ZigZag collection that takes the popular coordinated look to new levels. Made from 100% bleach cleanable StainSafe yarn, the updated colour palette reflects today’s trends, with a generous mix of natural and grey tones. Sitting alongside, two new stripes offer interest and variation, providing an ideal solution for stairs and hallways, while the introduction of a zig-zag pattern provides a real statement floor for homeowners looking to add a touch of contemporary design. Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta, said: “Over the past few years, Balta’s best-selling collections have been those that offer plains with co-ordinating stripes. The trend continues, but so does a homeowner’s desire for something new and interesting. Therefore, following extensive market research, we are delighted to introduce our new-look Moorland Twist collection. On-trend plains remain at the heart of the collection, but with two co-ordinating designs, new stripes and a striking zig-zag, we are extremely excited about this latest addition to the StainSafe stable.” This updated StainSafe collection is bleach cleanable and comes with a seven-year wear and ten-year stain warranty. The 12 plains are available in four and five-metre widths, with the stripes and zig-zags available in four-metre wide. T +32 56 62 22 11

Jumping for joy

Described as the ‘biggest’ and ‘best’ indoor play and party venue in the land, Doncaster’s Astrabound centre has expanded with an exciting new Go Bounce trampoline park, treating kids and adults to new decorative and acoustic vinyl flooring in the process. The recent renovation meant over 600 square metres of flooring were required, the project costing over £500,000 and creating in excess of 200 jobs for the local community. This has resulted in fun and exercise being brought to groups of all ages, visitors experiencing Itec Silento Salzburg 691 and Concept Woods Tavel 631 designs along the way. The former champions stone’s intricate nuances in icy grey colourway, while the latter introduces the look of golden oak with all its knots, grains and swirl marks. Salzburg, found within Itec’s Silento stable, was selected for communal areas thanks to its 18dB of sound reduction, helping to limit the noise experienced in what is a busy environment. Upstairs in the canteen, Tavel and its Hyperguard+ PUR protective layer ensure a stunning aesthetic is achieved without the maintenance hassle of true wood, chosen from the decorative Concept Woods range. Both Silento and Concept Woods are available in two and four-metre widths, another string to Itec’s bow allowing for fewer joins, a better aesthetic and less potential failure hotspots. Trevor Wharton, of Trevor Wharton Carpets, Scarborough, explains his choices: “We have worked with Itec on a number of projects and to this point they haven’t let us down. We had no hesitation in selecting from the Silento and Concept Woods collections, these floors ticking all the relevant boxes for the Go Bounce expansion: easy to care for, sound-reducing and set to stand the test of time.” Playing as much on their practicalities as their striking aesthetic, Go Bounce’s new floors are just one in a series of Itec installations being carried out across the county. The selection of both Silento and Concept Woods demonstrates the versatility found in the brand’s portfolio; whether acoustic, decorative or safety flooring is selected, these heavy commercial-rated options are set to impress over a sustained period. Hardwood heaven

Quick-Step has announced the launch of its Massimo hardwood flooring collection and in a testament to the brand’s enduring love for wood and its commitment to craftsmanship, the luxurious Massimo collection features Quick-Step’s longest and widest floorboards yet, measuring 240cm x 26cm.

NEWS

The boards are characterised by large knots and subtle cracks, while the extra matt oil or extra matt lacquer finish enhances the natural, untreated look that is completely in line with today’s aesthetic of authenticity and simplicity. In September, Quick-Step launched its Massimo hardwood flooring collection in four awe-inspiring designs developed by its in-house team. “It’s no secret that we’ve always been obsessed with wood: its elegance and appearance, the warmth it exudes, its feeling to the touch, and the typical scent”, says Quick-Step Design Director Oke Nollet. “With our vinyl and laminate collections, we went out of our way to perfect the natural look. But with these Massimo floorboards, we took our passion to new extremes – from the size of the boards to the superior authenticity and craftsmanship in every single detail.” Quick-Step may well be best known for their range of wood imitation laminate and luxury vinyl flooring, combining natural looks with considerable practical benefits. With its engineered hardwood collection, however, the manufacturer aims to accentuate the element of nature and highlight the beauty of timber. The flooring features a finishing layer in oil or lacquer, a face layer, a core layer consisting of spruce or HDF, and a spruce backing. Varying wood species are used for the face layer, giving each collection a distinct look and grading. “Our hardwood floorboards are the ultimate expression of our love for wood,” Oke adds. www.Quick-Step.co.uk

Retailers are set to enjoy the full benefits of Granorte’s new dedicated stock collection in time for the busy autumn period, as new point-of-sale stands roll out across the country.

Exclusive to the UK market, the new displays perfectly embrace the many positives of cork floors and walls, with generous samples and clear selling messages an integral part of the design, as one of the most sustainable options around becomes even more accessible to homeowners. Headlining its sound insulation, warmth, softness, natural, sustainable and hypoallergenic qualities, the new visual invites homeowners to discover that a cork wall or floor is more than just a beautiful addition to the home. Comprising six easy-to-handle boards, each dedicated to a single collection, the new point of sale adds product diversity and interest to even the most forward thinking retailer, as Paulo Rocha, Granorte, explains: “For over a decade, our flooring sales in the UK have been growing at an impressive rate fuelled by specifiers and homeowners appreciating the pure beauty and practical benefits that cork can bring an interior. “However, we could not fail to notice the changes in consumer buying habits, with accessibility and availability an increasingly important factor in the final purchasing decision. We therefore needed to address this, the result a carefully researched and compiled dedicated UK collection that is available to anyone within just 48 hours. “With this new service, we invite retailers to become part of our success and ask them to contact our UK team to reserve one of the new stands.” T 01785 711131 www.granorte.co.uk

Tasty soft roll

Crown Floors introduces Venus, the newest and softest addition to its impressive portfolio of roll lines.

Launched as one of three new roll lines this Autumn, Venus not only brings all the benefits that have become synonymous with the brand’s Easy-Clean portfolio of carpet styles, it also fulfils the demands for exceptional underfoot comfort. Comprising six on-trend shades, ranging from Crystal and Champagne to French Grey and Night Fall, Venus is a tufted 1/10’’ cutpile carpet using 100% polypropylene super soft fibre. The result is a beautiful collection of exceptionally soft carpets that enjoy all the practical benefits that only a PP carpet can bring. Easy clean and bleach cleanable, felt-backed Venus boasts a seven-year wear and ten-year stain warranty, and is available in a fourmetre width rated for heavy domestic use. James Caldwell, Sales Co-ordinator, Crown Floors, elaborates: “While our cut length collections continue to go from strength to strength, we cannot ignore the growing demand from retailers for new roll lines. Venus is our latest addition, and as the first to use our super soft fibre, we are extremely excited about the prospects this new range will bring to the overall Crown Floors collection. Utilising all the manufacturing expertise of the Balta Group, Venus is another value-driven range that does not compromise on style or performance. Pitched at a key-price point rarely found in such soft touch carpets, we fully expect this to be another major hit to fall under the Crown Floors brand.” T 0800 0773301

Pride of Leonis

With point-of-sale that roars and two exclusive super-soft styles that promise to take care of ‘prides’ across the country, Leonis is the latest collection from Balta Carpets.

Featuring StainSafe Sensit two-ply yarn for a carpet that is not only incredibly soft, but strong and easy to care for, bleach-cleanable* Leonis gives families a carpet that comes ready to take on daily life. “The rise in super-soft carpets has been extraordinary and due to their popularity it is clear that they should be a key feature in every store,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “However, most super-soft carpets have a weak link, in that they lack the reassurance of stain-resistance, but this is not so with Leonis. Benefiting from our StainSafe Sensit fibre innovation, Leonis carpets are not only super-soft, but stain resistant too, making them a great alternative that homeowners are sure to love.” The collection is launching in two classic twist-pile styles, versatile Sarafina (1,650g/m2 pile weight) and luxurious Sarabi (1,900g/m2 pile weight), each available in 12 on-trend colours and 4/5m width options. Both Sarafina and Sarabi benefit from two-ply yarn for lasting resilience and carpets that are not only comfortable and stain-resistant, but strong too. Balta’s TwinBack backing is used to enhance the comfort of Leonis styles even further, the two-layer woven/needle-felt construction offering up to six-times more comfort than standard woven backings. Also making Leonis carpets easier to fit, TwinBack brings advantages for installers too. Leonis will be launched on a double-sided lectern with powerful imagery that helps the collection to stand out in-store. This theme is continued through sample books, presenters and in-store marketing assets to deliver a range equipped for the modern retail environment, where brand and image is playing an increasingly important part in the purchasing process. A dedicated microsite at leoniscarpet.com will also shortly be available. *Diluted bleach solution (one-in-ten parts) T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com

NEWS ‘No adverse impact’ after Brexit vote

The post-referendum flooring market remains “robust” says the Headlam Group, Europe’s leading floorcovering distributor. It adds that recent price increases after the vote “appear to have had no adverse impact on the level of residential revenues to date.”

Business booster

With over 1,000 professional installation requests received per month through the Quick-Step website, shared across 300 plus qualified master installers, there is never a better time to reap the benefits that only courses at The Academy for Excellence in Flooring can deliver, says the company.

For over a decade, Quick-Step has invested significant time and resources in consumer facing marketing communications, a committed move that has seen it become one of the country’s best-known, and much-loved flooring brands. Such is the dedication to consumer magazine advertising, public relations, social media, event participation, cycling sponsorship and more, the visitor numbers to the website consistently reach around 100,000 a month, with many eager to find not only the best flooring, but also a recommendation on who should carry out the installation. Along with plans to continue to invest in consumer facing marketing activities, the Academy has also announced its programme of Autumn courses, inviting installers to join the success story and in turn benefit from the considerable end-user exposure anticipated for Quick-Step in 2017. Lee Thompson, technical manager, Academy for Excellence comments, “Since its opening some five years ago, over 300 installers have passed through The Academy’s doors, returning to their place of work with one of the best qualifications available. “Master Installers not only discover new and exciting ways to improve their techniques, but also get to enjoy the full benefits that being closely linked to a leading consumer brand can bring.” Recently Master Installer, Jon Evans, renewed his qualification and said this of the LVT course: “I’ve participated in several manufacturer-led LVT courses, yet I found the Master Installer scheme a cut above the rest. Along with some new invaluable installation tips, the benefits to my business go beyond education. The constant leads fed through the Quick-Step website ensure my new skills are put into practise on a very regular basis.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Headlam reported revenues up 4.8% to £329m in the six months ended June 2016 with a profits increase of 22.4% to £15m, compare to £12m in the same period last year. Chief Executive Tony Brewer’s statement to the Stock Exchange was upbeat, noting the “continued outperformance of our UK business, an improving trend in our Continental Europe businesses and the ongoing delivery of our strategy to increase market share.” He continued: “August is traditionally one of the group’s peak trading months in the UK with the annual summer refurbishment of educational institutions. To date, this seasonal business seems to have been unaffected by the result of June’s referendum on EU membership. “However, the referendum result gave rise to a weakening in sterling, and the group has sought to mitigate this adverse inflationary effect by implementing price increases earlier this month for residential floorcoverings imported from Continental Europe. It is pleasing that these price increases appear to have had no adverse impact on the level of residential revenues to date. Our market appears to be robust.” Lifestyle Floors, Headlam’s ‘contemporary’ flooring brand, was highlighted in the Group results with a revenue increase of 34.8%. The UK is the main part of Headlam’s business, accounting for 87% of sales and the Group is predominantly residential (70%) though the latest announcement noted the “good progress” of Headlam Corporate, a new business division which is focused on specified commercial flooring. ‘How to’ telly

Recognising the importance of video in the promotion of brand and product, floorwise introduces its first series of installation videos, as it explains how to install carpet in a range of real world scenarios. Calling upon the expertise of independent flooring fitter, Justin Burns, of Battle, East Sussex, each of the three videos are designed to demonstrate the versatility and diversity of the floorwise product portfolio, while educating interested parties on how they can be used and revealing some very helpful hints along the way. Asked to carry out three installations, each with different requirements, Justin chose a number of fit-for-purpose products from the floorwise stable, and through the three videos, explains how and why he uses each. “How to install carpet in a master bedroom”, “How to install carpet stair runners” and “How to install carpet in a living room over underfloor heating”, Justin explains how using floorwise products, such as grippers, profiles, adhesives and specialist underlays help with the installation and improve the final end results. Richard Bailey, Managing Director, floorwise, explains the reasons behind the new video project: “For a couple of years we have seen the use of video take off in our sector. You cannot fail to miss the numerous installation videos that are currently on YouTube, so for a number of months now we have been planning our own. 30 October 2016

We understand that many installers have their own techniques and we were keen not to dictate the way our fitter installed the floor. We wanted a series that allowed creative freedom, but one that would be educational and also show how some of our floorwise products are used in the real world. We hope that these videos will be widely welcomed and used by the industry, and look forward to introducing the next series in the near future.” To see the videos search for the floorwise video channel on YouTube. Flower on Flooring Choosing the best product for the job Further emphasis on the value of underlay is provided by our latest article, starting with news of a ‘closed loop’ recycling initiative. This consists of a partnership between Anglo Recycling and the Made By U Social Enterprise, part of the M25 Group and run by Doncaster Flooring entrepreneur Neil Green. It has resulted in an innovative carpet recycling process being created. While some carpet can be Anglo partners with Made By U cleaned to a sufficient standard to be resold, odd shaped or small remnants are taken to the Anglo site in Lancashire and processed back to the original fibre form. Used to produce a range of underlays, this is then sold by the Made By U retail premises. Surplus funds are then used to help homeless people within the Doncaster area to get back on their feet. Calcium carbonate backing is separated and processed back to 98% purity, then used by local farmers as an alternative to lime to establish correct pH levels in their fields and delivering further benefits from the process. Axminster Carpets says its Axfelt Triple Layered Underlay helps reduce noise and heating bills and states that it is widely acknowledged as one of the highest quality underlays in its class, due to its luxury feel underfoot, multiple benefits and eco-friendly manufacturing process.

Made in the UK from recycled materials, including waste yarn and carpet and rubber tyres, Axfelt is designed to make a contribution to the reduction of the amount of carpet disposed of in landfill. It features wool felt topping, mixed material middle layer and a rubber crumb bottom layer. “Axfelt provides excellent foundations for a complete sustainable flooring solution. The finished underlay provides a tog rating of 2.2 for the highest level of warmth and comfort,” says Axminster Carpets. The company further states it has been synonymous with luxury British Carpets since 1755, each made using ethically sourced materials, traditional methods and individually inspected.

Interfloor increases their appeal

Interfloor chief executive officer John Cooper says: “Interfloor aims to provide a one-stop-shop for high performing flooring products that genuinely help our customers to profitably grow their business and provide consumers with the best solution for their needs. “On our website we provide an underlay selector which enables visitors to choose which of our branded products is the best match for their needs ranked by their comfort, durability, sound insulation (dB) or heat insulation (tog) performance and suitability for underfloor heating or hard wood flooring.” It has repositioned its Duralay underlay as the contractors’ brand of choice and for more technical applications in the home. Describing its Durafit System as the trusted solution for hotels, airports and offices, Mr Cooper says the Timbermate Excel underlay range “is perfect for installations where noise reduction is important.”

Triple-layered Axfelt underlay

“For domestic carpets, our Tredaire sponge rubber and PU foam underlays provide exceptional levels of luxury underfoot,” says Mr Cooper.

Breathe - QA’s natural underlay

QA Flooring Solutions is introducing Breathe, described as the next generation natural underlay with real consumer health benefits. It is made from 100% natural, sustainable material with no harmful chemicals or formaldehydes used in its production. It does not emit any VOCs or harmful vapours, the company states. It is fully breathable, so allows air to flow through it, and filters 95% of dust out of the air, for a fresher-feeling home, which makes it ideal for allergy sufferers. Easily meeting BS5808, Breathe’s density and compressive strength mean it can be installed anywhere in the home, even on stairs. It is also very stable and consistent so is easy to cut and fit, saving fitters time and money.

“Varying density in this way allows us to alter the durability and recovery aspects of each underlay to deliver tailored suitability from light domestic use with SD through to heavy contract use in SHD+. And with different thicknesses homeowners can still enjoy great comfort no matter what the budget. With 13 different options, there is enough opportunity for retailers to demonstrate why it might be worth spending a little more,” Mr Bailey concludes. Envirolay 42oz is Texfelt's most popular felt for both domestic and trade customers due to its 11mm thickness, longevity and high thermal and acoustic properties, the company reports, while Envirolay 54oz is chosen by customers looking for the best insulation properties. Its high 3.42Tog rating provides market leading thermal insulation and is used in all areas of the home. Heart n’ Soul is for those wanting comfort and extra resilience, whilst still having an underlay that is made from recycled raw materials. The rubber crumb used is sourced from vehicle tyres that are granulated and mixed with latex adhesive before being applied to the felt. Texfelt further states its Sterling Royale offers a combination of underfoot luxury along with high levels of sound reduction and insulation, which can be used anywhere in the home to give comfort and maintain the look and quality of the carpet. For customers that do not have time to install a new floor, Estillon offers its Floorfixx Regular subfloor, a dry system for creating a new, insulating, level subfloor. It is also immediately accessible: a major advantage over the use of liquid levelling compounds, the company states.

There is no need to carry in heavy bags of powdered levelling compound, and there is no dust, or long drying and waiting periods. This subfloor also prolongs the lifetime of the flooring material. It consists of a sandwich system that is quickly and easily installed by means of an interactive floorwise managing director adhesive bonding to Richard Bailey says his create a new, company's recycled PU foam insulating, level underlays provide retailers subfloor that is with “great value, performance immediately accessible. and plenty of up-sell The subfloor is ideal for opportunity.” use under PVC Now standard for residential carpet panels/strips, cushion installations, numerous densities are offered. vinyl, linoleum, carpet “Starting from the excellent value of our Standard and carpet tiles and can Density (SD) products through to the ultimate lasting be used for both performance of Super High Density Plus (SHD+) products in Lift, domestic and commercial Tread and Supreme,” says Mr Bailey. situations and additionally Floorwise offers underlay opportunities reduces impact sound. “To find out more on the new generation of underlay, why not give our friendly team a call to ask for a full introduction?” the company asks.

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

There was no “pulling the wool” over anybody’s eyes here - it was clear for all to see British Wool is really full of bounce and will maintain long lasting appearance better.

Colour and Inspiration Put Wool on Trend

Making an impact with wool is all about showing style, creating inspiration and proving quality all of which opens the door to talk about the assets of wool in carpet. The fabulous Flooring Show in Harrogate provided the perfect opportunity to bring all of these elements together.

The Campaign for Wool’s activity at this key event put the inspiration element at the centre of the leading quality manufacturers in wool today. A highly creative feature that had bold upright walls of wool carpet around a ‘Paint and Decorate with Wool’ theme took the fifth wall story of carpet to a new level. Adam, Axminster, Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier, Penthouse and Ulster Carpets surrounded the Wool Trends area with fabulous product.

British Wool launched their long awaited Premium Gold label which promotes the higher level of 70% British Wool within the wool blend. The pre-existing Platinum Label which is 100% British Wool graced the walkways in a vivid red wool provided by the range Glen Shee by Kingsmead Carpets. This naturally has won our British Wool Carpet of the Month.

These new British Wool Premium labels will be used by manufacturers to show that the range has improved bounce-back - a natural robust resistance to footfall flattening. Highlighting this - British Wool put the wool under an interesting and practical task on their stand providing a lay-man’s lab test! Two different clean but raw wools, in the same volume were displayed in large clear containers with two compressors - in the form of weights. One container held British Wool in its 100% form - spring and structure was evident and it could not be flattened, quickly resuming its original level in the container. The other container held an alternative but common blend of carpet wools and this simply did not match up proving a much lesser, lacklustre performance. There was no ‘pulling the wool’ over anybody’s eyes here - it was clear for all to see - British Wool is really full of bounce and will maintain long lasting appearance better.

British Wool Carpet of the Month

Glen Shee is produced entirely in the United Kingdom by Kingsmead Carpets. It is made from an exclusive blend of specially selected fleece wools grown on sheep that thrive in the varied terrain of Scotland. Scottish sheep have evolved over centuries to ensure they can cope with the vagaries of the Scottish climate; the fleece protects the sheep whilst it has free range of its natural habitat. Available in twenty shades and in 4 and 5 metre widths Kingsmead developed this with 100% premium British Wool and it was the first Platinum Label British Wool carpet in the UK.

And Why We Like It...

Glen Shee at The Flooring Show in Harrogate. 38 October 2016

Glen Shee - the range name may conjure up images of mountains, steaming porridge and kilts but this is a plain heavy domestic carpet with true might and strength. It has proven itself at a major event where it withstood 8000 people during a week and looked perfect at the end! It was also recently proving its bounce-back-ability on the walkways of Wool Trends at The Flooring Show in Harrogate. Those Scottish sheep have very strong wool ‘och aye…we love you Glenn Shee!’

Harrogate

Review 2016

Shining through! Show makes smart start to selling season Show time began in Harrogate with the late summer sun shining and that bright start was carried through into three days of confident trading at The Flooring Show. ”If the optimism we have seen here is repeated on the High Street then it’s going to be a very busy time for the flooring industry in the run up to Christmas,” says Martin Peace of Abingdon. Neil Valentine of Furlong agreed: “I have been coming to Harrogate for decades and I have never experienced a better show.” Higher levels of investment in stand presentation, an increase in product innovation, exhibitor numbers and visitor levels some 10% up on previous years made for an uplifting event that sent manufacturers and retailers home brimming with enthusiasm.

“I have been coming to Harrogate for decades and I have never experienced a better show.”

The ‘soft’ sector in carpets took centre stage again as consumer appetite for this style is not only sustained but continues to grow. All good news for the industry as the leading products in synthetic fibre have to be cleverly engineered to deliver robust performance alongside their super softness and the premium prices that consumers are willing to pay is feeding through into higher order values in store. All the leading manufacturers launched major new ranges in this category, but did so with innovation that allows differentation between products of different construction and performance, giving retailers more scope to up-sell. Meanwhile wool’s campaign to woo the hearts and minds of consumers continues to pay off and does so in style with some highly creative launches at the show that keeps natural fibre at the centre of interior design. Alongside the imaginative promotion of its performance benefits, the wool people are looking increasingly competitive on pricing too. A particular sign of confidence is seen in some of the new custom offers from companies like Hugh Mackay and Brintons where consumers can work with retailers to design individually specified carpets at affordable prices. Patterns and colour are increasingly in evidence - in LVT as well as textile flooring - and the trend reflects greater confidence among consumers who are a little more prepared to take the ‘acceptable risk’ of a subtle pattern on their floor instead of always playing safe with plains. And while shades of grey continue to dominate, there’s genuine uptake of stronger colours with many blues selling well and some brighter greens and citrus pastel tones being taken up.

When underlay is looking sexy, it suggests there a little more money about among the buying public. The major players have further improved their presentation of both carpet and smooth floor products with imagination and flair to provide that all-important extra opportunity for retailers to add revenue to every sale. A new underlay innovation from QA using sawdust to manufacture a high performance product which improves air quality also attracted attention here. Overall, flooring reported a relatively sluggish summer with a post referendum slump in July but Brexit doesn’t appear to be impacting consumer sentiment as yet and there are strong signs that momentum is growing to make the Q4 sales season a considerable success - and the industry is more than ready for it! Our next issue will have full reports on the latest and greatest from Harrogate.

Vibrant vinyl

Polyflor, the UK's commercial and residential vinyl flooring specialist, has recently announced the launch of Bloc PUR, a vibrant collection of solid colour sheet flooring in a broad spectrum of 16 enticing colours.

Designed to provide either a subtle backdrop or a bold, modern statement in the retail, leisure and commercial sectors, UK manufactured Bloc PUR is a high performance heterogeneous sheet floorcovering with a textured matt finish. Developed after feedback from the marketplace revealed a desire for a much sought after plain decoration flooring, Bloc features an innovative, fully pigmented, homogeneous 0.7mm wear layer of pure colour. The new Bloc PUR range can be used to create tonal, complementary or harmonious interior design schemes through the availability of greys, neutrals, pastels and brights in its colour palette, whether they are used individually or combined with other designs from the range. Whenever a high degree of aesthetic finish is required, cold or chemical welding is advised, however if the hot welding method is preferred then matching weld rod is available for each Bloc PUR shade.

Making a difference

Karndean Designflooring has raised £8,000 in support of CLIC Sargent, a UK cancer charity for children, young people and their families, as part of its annual charity golf day at Hilton Puckrup Hall Hotel.

With its head office and state-of-the-art showroom based at Vale Park, Evesham, Karndean pledged its support to CLIC Sargent after learning of the tremendous support it had given to Mason Gibbs, the son of one of its sales managers, Ian Gibbs. Being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin T-Cell lymphoma (a type of blood cancer) in April 2015, four-year-old Mason has since completed an intense phase of chemotherapy and is now in the maintenance period of his treatment, due to finish in 2018.

Polyflor’s experienced in house Design Service are able to use precision water jet cutting technology to create stunning bespoke design floors for interior projects with Bloc and Polyflor’s other high performance flooring products.

Attracting Karndean staff, customers and suppliers UK wide, the money raised will go towards providing clinical, practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer, and their families. “We can’t thank CLIC Sargent enough for the care and support they provided our family, especially with Mason being diagnosed at such an early age, just before his third birthday˛ commented Ian Gibbs of Karndean Designflooring.

Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager comments, “With Polyflor Bloc we are able to bring an exciting collection of single solid colour designs to our expanding portfolio of vinyl flooring products, offering our customers even more creative options for residential and commercial interiors.”

He said: “Although Mason became really poorly as a result of the chemotherapy itself, he still managed to keep smiling and entertain our family with his cheeky nature, and it’s thanks to charities like CLIC Sargent who help make the difference.”

Bloc PUR is beautifully presented within a sampling package which includes a brochure and a presenter. Sampling can be ordered free of charge on the Polyflor website or by calling the Polyflor Samples Direct Hotline on 0161 767 2551. Bloc PUR is also 100% recyclable via the Recofloor recycling scheme and contains recycled content.

Paul Barratt, MD of Karndean Designflooring, said: “Understanding the support Mason, Ian and his family have received from CLIC Sargent, our charity golf day was the perfect opportunity for us to say thank you and recognise their fantastic work. T 01386 820185 www.karndean.com

Rolling out the red carpet

Last month saw 52 journalists representing 16 magazines join the Carpet Foundation Patron Members at the biennial Red Carpet Awards. The Awards, which recognise the amount and quality of publicity given to carpet, are very popular and keenly contested within the media. They also play a key role in generating extensive publicity for carpet in the influential home interest and national press. The judging panel of Sophie Conran, Vanessa Brady OBE, Andrea Maflin and Louise Anton picked winners from 7 categories. The entries alone amounted to over £200,000 of publicity for carpet. The winners were:

Best Makeover - House Beautiful - Dec/Jan 2015 (sponsored by Cormar Carpets) Best Online - Ideal Home - Best use of carpet in a decorating scheme - Living Etc April 2016 (sponsored by Ulster Carpets) Best Shopping piece - Elle Decoration November 2015 Best work by a Freelance - Katrina Burroughs - The Sunday Times Best exposure for wool/wool rich carpet - Homes & Antiques Best article/feature - Good Housekeeping - June 2016’ Commenting, Rupert Anton said: “We work very closely with the media doing our best to ensure that carpet is featured regularly in magazines and newspapers. Indeed, we are recognised as the 'one stop shop' in the media for carpet. In the last 12 months alone, we have had 10 pages in Good Housekeeping, a double 42 October 2016

This is unprecedented media exposure. Carpet has never had a higher profile. “With a few notable exceptions, little is done to keep carpet in the public domain. When the UK’s biggest selling women’s monthly lifestyle magazine actively targets the Awards, gives carpet 10 pages and promotes our Patron members and retailers, then I think it is fair to say we are on to a winner.” T 01562 755568 www.carpetfoundation.com

NEWS Spot checks ‘seriously flawed’

Most of us realise that when it comes to garnering information or seeking advice on the internet there are some dubious sources out there and we shouldn’t believe everything we see and read. So how do we decide who to trust? For the news we might look for a recognised broadcaster like the BBC or national broadsheets and tabloid newspapers. For consumers looking for help in making purchasing decisions Which? is one of the most popular sources of advice.

Woolsafe however say that recent product testing procedures by Which? were seriously flawed and disappointing.

introducing

carpet underlay

Which? recently tested several carpet spot removal products and graded them on price, ease of use and how well they removed spills. Which? also looked at home remedies and, in their wisdom, recommended using washing up liquid to remove spills from carpet. “It was this very poor advice that caught our eye and WoolSafe began to dig a bit deeper, “ says Steve Bakker. “The reason why Which? can recommend washing up liquid is because they don’t test the rate of soiling after application. What is the point of cleaning up a spill only for all the dirt to stick to the washing up liquid residue left behind? You just end up with a dirty great big stain,” he said. WoolSafe also found, under controlled testing, that some of the spotters recommended by Which? caused rapid soiling, bleaching, colour run and one was even highly combustible! When they broadened the testing to even more products on the High Street they discovered: • 75% - that’s 3 out of 4! - of the random selection of spot removers failed the WoolSafe standard tests (and are therefore not suitable for use on all carpet fibres, including wool) • Over half of the products will cause rapid soiling, leaving your carpet in a worse state than if you had done nothing! • Half the products are not even effective spot removers! • 25% will adversely affect the colour fastness of the carpet! Of the 3 highest rated ‘Best Buys’ the top product failed WoolSafe testing on both colour fastness and rapid soiling…. “If you can’t trust 3 out of 4 spotters not to damage your carpet and you can’t trust Which? Best Buy advice, then how can you be sure you are choosing a safe and effective product?” says Steve Bakker. www.woolsafe.org.

Wool Workshop - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with prices rising and increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to justify premium pricing. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.

SAFE

PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages. COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

DURABLE

SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EASY-CARE

ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

COMFORT

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

NEWS ‘Higher morale’ in wool industry

The Campaign for Wool and the International Wool Textile Organisation presided over the signing of The Dumfries House Wool Declaration, witnessed by HRH The Prince of Wales, Patron of The Campaign for Wool at special conference of wool industry stakeholders. The “Custodians of The Wool Industry” declaration has been created to ensure that key players from shepherds to shop owners commit to protect the environment and uphold the best possible practices for sheep welfare, commerce and industry. The Dumfries House Wool Declaration agrees, amongst other things, that the major wool growing countries conform to the strictest standards of animal welfare as embodied in the IWTO Specifications for Wool Sheep Welfare. The IWTO Specifications are premised on the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare as set forth by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE): freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, the freedom to express normal behaviour, and the freedom from fear and distress. The signing of the declaration was the culmination of the UK’s inaugural Wool Conference held at Dumfries House, in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The conference was the largest and most prestigious international gathering of wool experts ever to be held in the UK, and was organised by The Campaign for Wool and the International Wool Textile Organisation with M&S support.

M&S CEO Steve Rowe (left) is pictured with HRH (centre) and M&S designer and model David Gandy The conference, attended by around 250 wool trade delegates, included speeches by The Prince of Wales, M&S CEO Steve Rowe, the designer Sir Paul Smith, Nicholas Coleridge CBE, the President of Conde Nast International and Livia Firth, the founder and creative director of Eco-Age. Prince Charles, who used the conference to announce that he would give a further five-year commitment as Patron to the Campaign for Wool, spoke of being “encouraged” by what had been achieved since the campaign launched eight years ago. HRH said “It is never easy to be entirely clear about cause and effect, but during the life of the campaign there has been some encouraging progress in the overall situation. In general terms, wool prices are higher; sheep numbers are stable in most markets; designers are using more wool and there is a greater appreciation of wool’s many excellent qualities. “And all that has led to generally higher morale in the wool industry. So despite some remaining storm clouds and challenges, the overall picture is considerably positive.” Nicholas Coleridge CBE, the Campaign for Wool chairman, said now that the challenge was to encourage lesser users to adopt wool. www.campaignforwool.org

Clinical efficiency

Altro’s flooring and wall cladding systems are proving their clinical capabilities in a new state-of-the-art primary healthcare facility in Maidstone, Kent, where safety and infection control are paramount. Redeveloped from an existing building by main contractor Willmott Dixon Interiors, Albion Place Medical Centre combines a local GP practice with services provided by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership, plus an on-site pharmacy. The three-storey medical centre was designed by GDM Architects, whose priorities for the selection of flooring and wall cladding were clear. “Our key drivers for the new medical centre were safety and infection control, so the flooring and wall cladding had to meet very stringent requirements,” says senior architect Ben Jugoo. “We chose Altro’s range of products because of their suitability for clinical environments in terms of safety and hygiene. They also offer a great range of colours, tones and textures, which gives us the flexibility to create an appealing, modern, design-led environment, while keeping within strict health guidelines. “Robustness was also a priority - our aim was to create a facility that would stand the test of time, and where the flooring and wall cladding wouldn’t need to be replaced in five years. Low maintenance was another important consideration,” he said. T 01462 489516 www.altro.co.uk

F. Ball’s Stopgap 800 Wearcoat, a self-levelling wearing surface, has been used to create a high quality floor surface as part of the refurbishment of a 1930s’ office building in East London.

Having removed the original cellular offices and stripped back the existing finishes to create a contemporary ‘industrial’ feel, the developers wanted to maintain the design theme by installing cementitious wearing surfaces, while providing the option for new occupiers to install a floorcovering if preferred. Main flooring contractors H.I.S. Contracts specified Stopgap 800 Wearcoat for the project and subcontracted Euro Resin Solutions to undertake the work. After priming the subfloor with Stopgap P131 General Purpose Primer, Stopgap 800 was pump applied over the entire office floor, covering an area of 1100m2. Stopgap 800 is a self-levelling commercial and industrial grade flooring compound that is used for upgrading and renovating new and existing internal floors in light to heavy-duty applications, where floorcoverings are not necessarily required to be installed. Stopgap 800 Wearcoat is also low odour and protein-free. David Mills, Director of H.I.S. Contracts, said: “I can always depend on F. Ball products to get the job done. F. Ball has been a market leader in the flooring industry since the beginning of my career and they continue to be a brand that I trust. Whatever the nature of the job I know that, with F. Ball, I can be confident of a high standard and a professional finish.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk. 54 October 2016

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 56

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS October 2016

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Velvet/Plush

Twist

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 57

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.carpenter.limited.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 62

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds.
