ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS


Single Package HVAC units are inexpensive but can be a problematic source of noise while running and an inlet for outside sounds.

Cheap or old fluorescents in need of replacement can produce a distracting hum.

Ineffecient HVAC systems may be supplemented by fans, which are neither quiet nor the most comfortable.

Rustling papers and chairs scraping on the floor add to background noise and interfere with the teacher’s voice.

Vibrations can travel through floors if outside structures are physically attached.

Daylight from above (solar tubes or skylights) should be arranged similarly to the artificial lighting.

INNOVATION The System: The entire product line is based on the panelization of structural walls as well as exterior finishes. Dimensions are standardized and range from 4’ to 16’, but the rest is up to you! Either pick from the existing set of options or design your own by picking window placement, materials, or even a specific function you are looking for.

Floors Exterior Panels Special Components: Identity: Facades are separate from the structure, which allows finishes to be easily shipped, installed, maintained, replaced, and, most importantly, mixed and matched to create unlimited variation in identity.

Panels with specific functions can be added to give enhanced purpose to a space without adding square footage. The SLC can become an integral part of any existing school. It, too, can add valuable program such as a library, an ecology center, an enclosed playground, and so on. The possibilities are up to you!

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS According to research into thermal comfort requirements, it is generally a good rule to have cooling come from above and heating from below, in tandem with a recommended 8L/person/sec air exchange rate. When considereing the placement of mechanical systems in relation to the classroom, air handling units attached directly to the walls or roof cause a distracting hum while working. Given this, HVAC systems are located either on the ground below the floor or in a connected room and are distributed through the roofs (cool air) or floor (heat air).

Cooling Systems (in roof ) FLY-AWAY! (water-based system) - thin steel frame and all-around clerestory windows allow classroom to feel open and always bright - chilled beams incorpoate ventilation, cooling, lighting, and possibly other systems (sound system. sprinklers, sensors, etc)

FOCUS! (air-based system) - louvre-controlled skylight at the front of the classroom lends emphasis to the content being taught - high-velocity ducts bring air through the walls without drastically eliminating insulation - air is diffused evenly and quietly though gaps in the wood panel ceiling

THIN FLOOR! (water-based system) - using warmboard in place of typical subfloor makes for a very solid floor - heated water runs through tubes in the warmboard panels and gently heats up the classroom from below

TECH FLOOR! (air-based system) - raised access floors are good for incorporating other systems, such as floor outlets, and can be quickly accessed for maintenance - heated air is blown into air space and diffsed through registers in the floor - unlike the previous floor, the TECH FLOOR! also provides adesquate ventilation

TYPICAL SITE 1 Sample Roof: FOCUS! All roofs have adjustable parts to adapt to each orientation. For example, the FOCUS! roof has a skylight highlighting the teaching wall and can be rotated depending on the location of the teaching wall. Louvres in the skylight can oriented within the skylight to face south, regardless of the roof’s orientation.
