n behalf of the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) Executive Board and Staff, welcome to the 2023 Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST), presented by STAT.
STAT knows how passionate you are about teaching our future discoverers, and as the largest and longest-established science teachers association in Texas and the only general science education association in the state, STAT has the tools you need to change lives as a science educator in Texas. From Amarillo to Brownsville and El Paso to Texarkana, STAT breaks down the classroom walls so you can collaborate with thousands of dedicated teachers like you across the state, grow as an educator, and inspire your students to discover the world through science. STAT is a passionate community dedicated to science teaching and learning, and at no place is that more evident than at CAST—where we can inquire, inspire, and transform together.

The CAST23 planning team, led by Chair Jennifer Meyer, STAT 2021– 2022 President, has worked hard to design an amazing conference where you’ll learn new concepts and strategies that you can immediately bring back to your classroom. We are grateful to the many volunteer presenters who contributed their ideas and efforts to make CAST23 meaningful and memorable. We’re also excited about our keynote speaker, Nolan Bushnell, technology pioneer, entrepreneur, scientist, and engineer, as well as innovative and inspiring programming, including tracks focused on implementing the revised Science TEKS and leveraging three-dimensional learning. This conference guide is designed to provide a framework for all the varied CAST programming. For an in-depth look at sessions and the most up-to-date information, we encourage you to rely on the STATCAST mobile app, where you’ll find detailed, timely information about the workshops, extended sessions, and other important happenings. The app will help you navigate the conference and allow you to personalize your experience! Whether you’re a science teacher, education leader, or elementary teacher who happens to teach science, STAT is for you. As a member of STAT, you are part of a community of thousands of educators and science advocates from all grade levels and disciplines, including elementary education, environmental science, earth science, biology, chemistry, informal science, and physics in K–12, university, and informal settings. Thank you for your contributions to build our science community and for choosing STAT as your partner in your journey as a science educator.

2023 STAT Statewide Award Recipients Each year, STAT is proud to recognize excellence in and dedication to the field of science education through its annual award program, which highlights classroom teachers at multiple levels (elementary and secondary), campus/ district leadership, and nontraditional/informal leaders whose work supports science teachers. A committee of STAT members reviews all applications and selects award recipients to be recognized during the annual Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST).
OUTSTANDING SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS The Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year Awards recognize excellence in science teaching in Texas public, private, or charter schools, and are presented annually.
Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher of the Year
Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher of the Year
Amber Chalmers
Selene Verhofstad, Ed.D.
Creativity, compassion, and critical thinking are three of the values that Amber Chalmers instills in her students every day. Amber started her career in Lancaster ISD–the same district that she graduated from. She saw it as an opportunity to give back to the community that shaped her views, gave her experiences, and motivated her to do better and be better. Now in her 17th year, she teaches fifth-grade science at Houston Elementary School. She seeks to motivate students with her educational raps and creative lessons. Her main goal in the classroom is to teach students how to think beyond the curriculum and standardized tests so that they feel prepared to conquer life’s obstacles. Amber serves as a coach for the District History Bowl competition and volunteers wherever a need is present. Amber earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies (early childhood) from Prairie View A&M University and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Selene Verhofstad, Ed.D., is a seasoned science educator, specializing in teaching chemistry to early college students at Dobie High School in Pasadena ISD. She earned her doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction (with a STEM emphasis) from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where she also instructs an advanced science methods course. Additionally, Selene coordinates teacher mentors with instructional coaches across Pasadena ISD and Clear Creek ISD campuses, and teaches introductory chemistry at San Jacinto Community College. Throughout her career, Selene has been instrumental in equipping teachers with necessary resources and fostering their professional growth in science and technology. Among other accomplishments, she has teamed up with campus leaders to enhance Advanced Placement (AP) enrollment and has undertaken action research projects to optimize engineering science teaching techniques. These collaborative initiatives have seen her present at distinguished conferences, including the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST), presented by STAT.

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP IN SCIENCE EDUCATION AWARD The Distinguished Leadership in Science Education Award is presented annually and recognizes outstanding support of science education at the district or state level by a nonteaching administrator in early childhood through grade 12, or nontraditional/informal leaders whose work supports science teachers.
Sandra Johnson, Ph.D.
Johnson Consulting Service Sandra Johnson, Ph.D., has more than 40 years’ experience teaching at all levels from Pre-K through university. She is an educational consultant and former classroom teacher with 16 years of experience teaching grades K–5, as well as a gifted summer science program for grades 3–4 at Texas State University. Sandra was the first science consultant for Region XIII ESC, where she worked for 14 years, and she also taught elementary science methods at the University of Texas and early childhood education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. As an educational consultant, Sandra has written and aligned eight curriculum guides for all grades for six environmental organizations, written articles and edited two books, and developed the first alignment to state standards for Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Project WILD and Aquatic WILD. Sandra has trained more than 2,500 teachers from every ESC region, and her Texas aquatic science curriculum for grades 6–12 sees more than 300,000 downloads annually.

STAT Affiliates As the Texas science community is diverse and made up of educators focused on a variety of disciplines and serving various grade levels, STAT is proud to recognize and support independent organizations that further serve STAT members. By policy, STAT may enter into strategic partnerships with any active science association in Texas that has 25 or more members and shares and supports the goals and purpose of STAT. These organizations are collectively referred to as “affiliates,” and currently, STAT recognizes eight such active groups in Texas. Affiliated associations play a critical role in advising STAT on issue affecting specific areas of science education through the STAT Advisory Board and in creating and delivering specialized content at CAST through specific affiliate strands and throughout the year through other mediums. STAT is grateful to these Affiliate partners for their contributions to CAST, as outlined on the following pages.
