KICK IN THE GUTS By Stuart Biggins
THE Alberton Football Netball League feels cheated in the wake of AFL Gippsland’s restructure of football in the region that will leave the competition with just seven clubs. Clubs have been further angered by AFL
Gippsland’s advice that the league ‘calls around’ and finds an eighth club. League executives are furious, particularly given the undertaking league president Barry Stride received before Korumburra-Bena’s appeal being heard that Alberton would not be left a seven club league. Neil Park, league director of football management, was “disappointed”. “It is as if AFL Gippsland saw what could
be done and thought, let’s do it, and acted too quickly,” he said. “It haven’t just fragmented Alberton; it has pulled us apart in a major way. It is terrible what has happened.” Continued on page 4.

The project by Veolia was not listed in the draft Gippsland Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan released on Friday, meaning the landfill is not needed to service Gippsland’s future waste needs. Wendy Reed of protest group Dump the Dump was relieved but stopped short of saying the landfill, which would store rubbish from Melbourne, would now be abandoned. “We want to make sure that proposals like Veolia’s do not proceed because they pose a threat to our community and other communities in regional Victoria,” she said. “While it may not be on the table immediately, we just want to make sure it does not go back on the table in three years’ time.” The landfill was mooted for an exhausted quarry on Whitelaws Track. Veolia’s Andrew Race did not return a call from The Star. Dump the Dump representatives will attend a meeting about the plan at the Leongatha Football Clubrooms this Friday, August 19. A session for businesses will be held from 12.30pm to 3pm, and a community session from 3.30pm to 5pm.
