JUST like Uncle Sam, committed CFA volunteer Andy Kay, needs people who are willing to commit to a fight for the greater good. The Leongatha brigade captain stressed, though, that not everyone needed to be on the frontline, and whether they want to clean, service fire extinguishers or do a myriad of other tasks, all were welcome. Andy said the brigade had been successful in recruiting a number of new recruits in the 18 to early 20s age bracket, but there was a “big gap” in the mid 20s to mid 40s age group. “You get to 50 and above and there’s quite a few of us,” he said. The CFA is calling for members for all its South Gippsland brigades. More bush fire coverage on pages six and seven.
The latest development news comes in the wake of an economic boom that could pour billions of dollars into the region. The factory project is being completed by the Rossi Group, which has substantial investments in Korumburra, including the former saleyards. The president of the Leongatha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Darryl McGannon welcomed the development. “We absolutely welcome new industry coming to Leongatha. Bringing new businesses into town is always good,” Mr McGannon said. “This is a stable area and it is a good place to invest. There are opportunities available in the district, which will enhance the prospects of attracting more employment for local people.” The Rossi Group also has for lease or sale a similar set of factories in Adkins St, in Korumburra’s industrial estate, and is constructing a number of independent living homes in Korumburra, Leongatha and Yarragon. Despite the recent economic downturn, South Gippsland has enjoyed several remarkable developments. The arrival of natural gas enabled Burra Foods in Korumburra to introduce an expansion program last April. In Leongatha, Murray Goulburn has already poured millions of dollars into a multi-million dollar upgrade of its plant. A South Gippsland shire economic report, dated September 2008, described

the redevelopment of Murray Goulburn’s processing facility as “the most significant development in Leongatha”. “The upgrade is valued at about $200 million. Occurring over a 10-year period, it will have significant flow-on effects for Leongatha and all of South Gippsland.” Developments at Barry Beach and Port Anthony are expected to pour billions into the region over the next decade, with coal exports set to soar. The port development coincides with Latrobe Valley clean coal projects, which could bring an estimated benefit of $11.5 billion to the State, according to a report presented to the Victorian Government. Recommendations in the report, include that Port Anthony, at Barry Beach, should be developed for clean coal projects that are expected to be worth about $12 billion over the next 10 years. An initial investment of about $1.8 billion will be required for these projects to proceed. Esso-BHP Billiton recently completed expansion works at its Barry Beach marine terminal, which is expected to boost employment by more than 60 jobs this year. Ken Fraser, acting manager of social and economic development at South Gippsland shire council, welcomed the developments at Port Anthony and at Barry Beach as well as the expansions at the two dairy factories and additions to the Leongatha and Korumburra industrial estates. “It’s great that these major developments are occurring. Their positive impacts will be felt throughout the community,” Mr Fraser said. “Despite the economic circumstances, we are continuing to receive more inquiries for businesses to expand or to come to the area.” Continued on page 8.
