IMPROVING workers’ wages and curbing the rising cost of basic goods top the list of issues that Filipinos want the Marcos administration to address immediately, according to the latest “Tugon ng Masa” nationwide survey conducted by OCTA Research.
The poll found that 45 percent of adult Filipinos cited improving or increasing wages and salaries of workers as among the most urgent national concerns, followed closely by controlling price increases of basic goods and services at 41 percent.
Access to affordable food, such as rice, vegetables, and meat, ranked third at 30 percent, while fighting graft and corruption in government was cited by 29 percent of respondents.
Providing free, quality education rounded out the top five at 28 percent.
While fighting graft and corruption remained within the top 5, it ranked higher in a Pulse Asia survey conducted also last month which showed that the majority of Filipinos view corruption as
having an impact on the economy, in particular on rising prices and weaker services.
The Pulse Asia survey showed at least 38 percent of respondents identified making food prices more affordable as the most urgent action government leaders should take, followed by reducing or eliminating corruption to improve service delivery (31 percent) and creating more jobs and livelihood opportunities (21 percent).
According to OCTA Research, across socioeconomic classes, wage concerns remained prominent. Among Class D respondents, 46 percent prioritized wage increases, compared with 43 percent in Class ABC and 42 percent in Class E.
THE Department of Public Works and Highways is looking to complete the inspection and audit of the more than 400 flood control projects nationwide by the first quarter of 2026.
“We are continuing our validation. We are conducting a thorough inspection and document audit of all 416 projects. This started last year, and we expect to be completed by the first quarter of this year,” DPWH spokesperson for legal matters Undersecretary Ricardo Bernabe III said. Bernabe said new processes are being introduced as to the coordinates of projects following allegations that former DPWH chief Manuel Bonoan deliberately fed the Palace wrong grid coordinates of flood control infrastructure.
“For this year, when you look at the projects, the station limits are already there – the corresponding coordinates are already there. So, just from the title, we would know what are the coordinates of the project, from start to end,” he said.
He added that changes in coordinates need the approval of DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.
He also reported that there are no flood control projects this year, as the DPWH is focused on completing all unfinished flood control projects.
He said they are now preparing the masterplan for projects to be implemented in 2027.

House to act on any impeach rap without delay, but with caution
By Maricel V. Cruz
THE House Committee on Justice is prepared to take up any impeachment complaint that reaches the panel through proper referral from the plenary, assuring the public it will be ready to exercise its constitutional mandate with both urgency and restraint.
“This is extraordinary power that is given to the sovereign people to remove an erring impeachable official. So, it is indeed my appreciation that it should be exercised without delay and with utmost caution,” Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro said during a forum yesterday.
The Justice Committee chairperson said procedural compliance and proper referral remain the key questions that determine what the committee can officially act on.

THE political coalition 1 Sambayan called on the national government to take more proactive actions in response to what it described as China’s “wolf warrior” rhetoric and disinformation.
“At a minimum, the government should consider declaring persona non grata any embassy spokespersons found to have engaged in inappropriate conduct,” the group said in a statement sent to Manila Standard.

THE Philippine Coast Guard and the China Coast Guard continued their joint maritime search and rescue operation following the capsizing of a foreign cargo vessel near the Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said.

According to the embassy, the China Coast Guard pursued its search and rescue efforts on January 23 for crew members who fell into the water after the vessel overturned in waters near the shoal. Four crew members remained unaccounted for. CCG vessels Dongsha and San-

men were deployed to the area and later coordinated with the PCG vessel BRP Cabra (9701), which arrived at the scene on the evening of Jan. 23, the embassy said. The vessels conducted a sectorby-sector search of the surrounding waters to locate the missing crew members.

“The Chinese Ambassador, who has maintained a notably low public profile, should likewise be formally summoned by the Department of Foreign Affairs to account for these actions, clarify the embassy’s position, and be reminded of the obligation to refrain from interference in domestic affairs, consistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” it added.
The Chinese embassy in the Philippines earlier said it had filed a diplomatic protest over remarks and social media posts by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela on maritime issues and expressed “strong indignation” to Philippine authorities.

THE Supreme Court (SC) has upheld a 2019 ruling of the Court of Appeals declaring 50 talent workers of broadcast network GMA as regular employees, not independent contractors, and that their termination from employment was illegal.
In a resolution dated July 16, 2025, but made public only over the weekend, the high tribunal’s Third Division denied GMA’s petition challenging the Court of Appeals decision that regularized employees
hired between 2003 and 2013.
The court noted that a key element of independent job contracting is freedom from the principal’s control over the means and methods of work, adding that GMA’s own
Talent Agreement showed the workers were bound by company rules and directives.
The ruling said the terms set by GMA contradicted its claim that talents worked flexible hours and had the liberty to work online. Instead, the company had the authority to set production schedules and require the talents’ presence.
The SC held that an employer-employee relationship clearly existed between GMA and the respondents, which the company refused to recognize by citing higher talent fees and the absence of control.
The high court also partially granted
another petition filed by GMA involving an illegal dismissal case earlier decided in favor of the workers by the Court of Appeals in 2020. It ruled that the respondents, whose contracts were terminated or not renewed while the case was pending, are entitled to reinstatement without loss of seniority rights and other privileges.
This includes full back wages, inclusive of allowances and other benefits, computed from the time their compensation was withheld until actual reinstatement. If reinstatement is no longer feasible, the workers are entitled to separation pay equivalent to one month’s pay for every year of service.

Taiwan honors House Secretary General Garafil
HOUSE Secretary General Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil received one of Taiwan’s highest civilian honors on Friday in recognition of her work in strengthening ties between Manila and Taipei during her stint as chairperson and resident representative of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office.
Garafil said the conferment of the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon reflects the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and goodwill in diplomacy, noting that partnerships are built through trust and steady engagement.
She described the recognition as a reminder that diplo -
macy helps deepen economic and people-to-people relations between the Philippines and Taiwan.
Garafil thanked Taiwanese officials, including Foreign Minister Lin Cia-lung, and acknowledged continued coordination with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, led by Rep. Wallace Minn-Gan Chow.
House officials said the Taiwan visit had been scheduled earlier and was linked to her past diplomatic service.
Garafil is set to resume her regular duties at the House of Representatives on Monday. Maricel V. Cruz
OFW arrested at NAIA over P43m worth of cocaine
GOVERNMENT agents intercepted an overseas Filipino worker carrying more than P43 million worth of suspected cocaine at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
A joint team from the Bureau of Customs, the Philippine National Police–Aviation Security Group, and the NAIA Interagency Drug Interdiction Task Group detained the 30-year-old woman during routine screening at the international arrival area on Thursday night.
Authorities said the suspect,
who arrived from Brazil, had illegal drugs concealed in her luggage, which triggered a positive alert from a narcotics detection dog.
Further inspection uncovered three improvised pouches hidden in a false compartment. Field tests confirmed the substance as cocaine weighing about 8.19 kilograms.
The suspect and seized evidence were turned over to NAIAIADITG for documentation and the filing of charges for violation of Republic Act 9165. Joel E. Zurbano
AFP launches pursuit after ambush in Lanao del Norte
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) launched immediate pursuit and security operations following an ambush that killed four soldiers in Barangay Liningding, Munai, Lanao del Norte on Friday. The AFP said troops are intensifying efforts to locate and neutralize the perpetrators, prevent further threats to civilians, and ensure the safety of affected communities.
The attack targeted personnel of Task Unit TABANG under the operational control of the
Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade. Initial reports said members of a local rebel group were behind the assault.
Four soldiers were killed, while another was wounded.
The AFP said the troops were conducting non-combat activities at the time of the attack.
Medical evacuation and reinforcements were immediately carried out, with the wounded soldier now receiving treatment as operations continue to restore peace and security in the area. Rex Espiritu

THE Bureau of Customs, (BOC) in coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Migrant Workers, has begun building cases against deconsolidators involved in the abandonment of balikbayan boxes following a joint inspection at the Manila International Container Port. Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno said information gathered during the inspection will be used to support the filing of criminal and administrative cases against companies that failed to deliver balikbayan boxes
entrusted to them by overseas Filipino workers.
Nepomuceno also announced the suspension of the deconsolidators’ privileges, barring them from transacting with the Bureau of Customs and from handling balikbayan shipments.
He warned logistics operators that shipment abandonment would result in strict enforcement actions and legal consequences.
The inspection covered several abandoned containers that have been the subject of complaints from overseas Filipino workers and their families.
The BOC earlier assisted affected
OFWs in filing complaints with the NBI in December 2025 against entities linked to the abandoned shipments.
“It is important that those who committed errors or deliberately failed to deliver the shipments are held accountable,” Nepomuceno said.
As of January 23, 2026, the Bureau of Customs has released 66 containers, with deliveries ongoing. Upon completion of the required legal documentation, the agency is set to release the remaining 74 containers for sorting and delivery. A total of 8,020 balikbayan boxes have so far been delivered to beneficiaries.

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)
confirmed the recovery of seven bodies believed to be among the 15 crew members of the sunken motor banca MBCA Amejara along the shores of Sarangani.
PCG Southeastern Mindanao Commander Commodore Philipps Soria said
five bodies were initially spotted floating on Saturday morning.
“Four bodies were sighted in one sector, while another was found in a separate sector during a combined search using marine and air assets,” Soria said.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies belonged to the MBCA Amejara as the victims were wearing life vests and were found among floating debris.
Search and recovery operations continued as of 2 p.m., bringing the total number of recovered bodies to seven.
A Philippine Navy vessel has been deployed to retrieve the remains, while authorities and other agencies continue searching for the remaining missing crew members and working to verify the victims’ identities.

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) is aiming to hold a demonstration run of the Metro Manila Subway by the first quarter of 2028 as part of ongoing efforts to finish the country’s first underground rail system.
In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the demo run will cover the subway’s initial section in northern Metro Manila, stretching from East Valenzuela to Quirino Avenue.
“Our target for the demo run— again, for the demo run—is the first quarter of 2028. This is different from testing and commissioning. For this phase, our train coaches will operate along the rail tracks from the East Valenzuela subway depot all the way to Quirino Station in Quezon City. This will be the first phase, which the public can expect by the first quarter
of 2028,” Lopez said.
The Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) broke ground in 2019. Once completed, the MMSP will feature 17 stations and a 30.34-hectare depot that will also house the Philippine Railway Institute.
The project involves building a 33-kilometer railway line connecting Valenzuela City to Pasay City, with a spur line leading to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. The 17 stations under the MMSP are Valenzuela, Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, East Avenue, Anonas,
(Camp Aguinaldo), Ortigas Avenue, Shaw Boulevard, Kalayaan Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Lawton East, Senate-DepEd, NAIA Terminal 3, FTI, and Bicutan.
Asked about the overall status of the subway project, Lopez said construction progress stood at around 26% as of November 2025.
The Metro Manila Subway, estimated to cost P488.5 billion as of September 2025, will require about five more years to complete, based on DOTr projections.
“As of November 2025, the entire Metro Manila Subway is more or less 26% complete. Subway construction is complex. You have tunnel boring machines and extensive work inside the tunnels. Essentially, almost everything has to be done underground,” Lopez said.
“Based on our calculations and the available budget, we expect full operations by 2032, or possibly by the last quarter of 2031. This refers
to the entire stretch from Valenzuela all the way to NAIA,” he added. Lopez said the DOTr is working to resolve the remaining right-of-way (ROW) issues by the second quarter of 2026. Earlier this month, the agency reported that it has already acquired 90.76% of the required right-of-way properties for the subway’s construction.
Once completed, Lopez said the MMSP is expected to serve around 300,000 to 400,000 passengers daily.
The MMSP is also designed to integrate with other rail systems: the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), and Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT7) through the Common Station; the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) at Anonas Station; and a physical connection to the North-South Commuter Railway Extension (NSCR-Ex) at the FTI and Bicutan stations.

AUTHORITIES confiscated more than P1.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested two individuals during an operation in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, on Saturday.
2 passengers nabbed over bomb jokes at NAIA
TWO passengers were barred from traveling after making bomb jokes during check-in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Friday evening.
The two male passengers, bound for Taipei, were checking in their baggage when airline staff asked the standard security question on prohibited items. Instead of answering directly, they joked that their bag did not contain a bomb.
Airline personnel immediately warned them that any reference to bombs or explosives inside airport premises is treated as a serious security threat.
The Philippine National Police–Aviation Security Group (PNP-Avsegroup) and airport authorities were promptly alerted.

Aglipay said the facility underscores the provincial government’s commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening the local economy.
He thanked the Department of Agriculture (DA), PhilMech, and Vice Governor Mamba for supporting the project.
Authorities said they acted on verified information that the suspects were involved in the delivery and sale of smuggled cigarettes in Dagupan City and nearby areas.

smuggled and sold at lower prices, according to the police report.
Prior to the arrest, operatives posed as buyers and arranged a controlled delivery of two boxes of cigarettes worth P56,000, which led to the confiscation of 26 additional boxes.
“All confiscated items were turned over to the Bureau of Customs as evidence for the filing of appropriate charges,” the report said.
Ilocos Police Regional Office Director Brig. Gen. Dindo Reyes said the successful operation reflects the police force’s firm stance against illegal activities in the region.
“We acknowledge that smuggling is a national challenge that weakens the economy, which is why we are committed to stopping the supply chain of smuggled goods,” Reyes said in a statement.

THE City of Makati has been recognized as an A-List City for 2025 by global environmental organization CDP, marking the third consecutive year it has earned the distinction.
The recognition places Makati among 120 cities worldwide acknowledged for leadership in environmental transparency and climate action.
“This recognition reflects our continuing commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience. In Makati, we understand that transparency is the foundation of effective climate action. By sharing our environmental data and progress with the global community, we hold
in a statement. CDP operates the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system. In 2025, more than 1,000 cities, states, and regions submitted environmental data, with 120 cities receiving an A score for comprehensive disclosure, advanced governance, and progress in ecological resilience.
To earn an A score, a city must meet several leadership criteria, including publicly disclosing environmental data through the Track platform, maintaining a city-wide emissions inventory, publishing a credible climate action plan, completing a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and setting a clear climate adaptation goal to address present and future hazards. Binay underscored the importance of sustaining these efforts for future generations.
Vice Governor Mamba described the center as a gamechanger for Tuao, noting that it addresses long-standing challenges faced by rice farmers.
Mayor William Mamba said the project would help uplift both farmers and the local community. Jessica M. Bacud
BI conducts surprise inspection in jail sites
THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) conducted a surprise inspection of foreign detainees at its facilities in Taguig and Muntinlupa, confiscating cellphones, electronic gadgets, cash, knives, and other prohibited items.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the operation followed claims by deported Russian vlogger Vitaly Zdorovetskiy that he had access to a mobile phone while in detention.
The simultaneous inspections were carried out by the BI intelligence division in coordination with the National Capital Region Police Office and the Bureau of Corrections.
Authorities searched all rooms, quarters, and common areas. Seized items included unauthorized cash, mobile phones, electronic devices, cigarettes and e-cigarettes, sharp objects, and gambling paraphernalia. The operation aimed to ensure detainees are not given special treatment. Vito Barcelo
SYDNEY—A 12-year-old boy bitten by a shark in Australia’s Sydney Harbor has died of his injuries, his family said on Saturday.
Nico Antic’s parents said their son died of the injuries suffered when a large shark attacked him last week as he and his friends were jumping into the water.
“We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away,” Lorena and Juan Antic said in a statement.
At the time of the attack, the children were leaping into the water off a six-meter (20-foot) rock in the eastern Sydney suburb of Vaucluse.
Recent heavy rain had drained into the harbor, turning the water murky, police said.
Antic was suffering from heavy bleeding when he was pulled into a police boat and taken to hospital in critical condition.
“Nico was a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit. He was always full of life and that’s how we’ll remember him,” his parents said.
The Sydney shark attack that eventually killed Antic was one of four recorded in the span of two days, which prompted officials to close dozens of the city’s beaches.
It was Sydney’s third recent sharkrelated death.
In September, a great white shark mauled surfer Mercury Psillakis to death at a popular northern Sydney ocean beach.
Two months later, a bull shark killed a woman swimming off a remote beach north of Sydney. AFP

Luistro pointed to the role of the House Secretary General’s office in receiving impeachment complaints, particularly as she noted the chamber’s top administrative official had been away on official travel when the two subsequent complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. were filed.
“Because our Secretary General was on official travel in Taiwan, I guess, to represent, I believe, the government when these two subsequent complaints were being filed,” Luistro said.
“We cannot comment again on that issue in the office of the Secretary General because I am inclined to believe that it falls squarely in her discretion as to how she will discharge her function and power as far as receiving these impeachment complaints is concerned,” she added.
Earlier, presidential son and Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos said the House will properly act on any impeachment complaint filed against the President or any other impeachable official.

But will provide ‘more limited’ support for allies
WASHINGTON—The US military will prioritize protecting the homeland and deterring China while providing “more limited” support to allies in Europe and elsewhere, a Pentagon strategy document released on Friday said.
The 2026 National Defense Strategy (NDS) marks a significant departure from past Pentagon policy, both in its emphasis on allies taking on increased burdens with less backing from Washington, and its softer tone on traditional
foes China and Russia.
“As US forces focus on homeland defense and the Indo-Pacific, our allies and partners elsewhere will take primary responsibility for their own defense with critical but more limited support from American forces,” the strategy said.
The previous NDS – released under President Donald Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden – described China as Washington’s most consequential challenge and said that Russia posed an “acute threat.”
The new document however urges “respectful relations” with Beijing – while making no mention of US ally Taiwan, which China claims as its territory – and describing the threat from Russia as a “persistent but manageable” one affecting NATO’s
eastern members.
Both the Biden and Trump strategies say homeland defense is important, but their descriptions of the threats facing the US differ significantly.
The Trump administration’s NDS takes aim at the past administration for neglecting border security, saying this led to a “flood of illegal aliens” and widespread narcotics trafficking.
“Border security is national security,” and the Pentagon “will therefore prioritize efforts to seal our borders, repel forms of invasion, and deport illegal aliens,” it said.
Biden meanwhile focused on China and Russia, saying they posed “more dangerous challenges to security and safety at home” than even the threat of terrorism. AFP
CISARUA, INDONESIA —A landslide killed at least seven people and more than 80 are missing on Indonesia’s main island of Java Saturday, a disaster official said.
The landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck a village in the region of West Bandung at around 2:30 am, damaging houses.
“A landslide occurred in West Bandung Regency, West Java Province, in the early hours of Saturday, killing seven people,” Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster agency, or BNPB, said.
Concerns over rising prices were most pronounced among Class E respondents at 48 percent, higher than Class ABC at 45 percent and Class D at 40 percent.
Access to affordable food was also a bigger concern among lower-income groups, with 37 percent of Class E respondents citing it, compared with 30 percent in Class D and 25 percent
The Stratbase Institute, for its part, said Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan’s call for restraint and de-escalation in the South China Sea misrepresents the situation and ignores China’s continued aggressive actions in the area.
“As of Saturday 10:30 am, dozens of residents were reported safe, and 83 people were still being searched for,” he added. Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which typically runs from October to March.

The Tugon ng Masa survey was conducted from Dec. 3 to 11, 2025, using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 male and female respondents aged 18 and above nationwide. The survey has a ±3 percent margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level.
For its part, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said its programs that seek to break intergenerational poverty and fight involuntary hunger are right on track as indicated in the latest nationwide survey by OCTA
In a statement, Stratbase said it is China—not the Philippines—that has consistently engaged in provocative and confrontational behavior, citing repeated water cannon attacks, dangerous maneuvers, ramming incidents, and the harassment of Philippine vessels that have damaged property and injured Filipino personnel.
“That is why now our flood control experts are meeting with our Secretary to come up with a flood control masterplan that we will use starting next year, moving forward, so that we can be sure that all the flood control projects that will be implemented are truly needs-based and will address our country’s problems with flooding, and mitigating calamities caused by typhoons,” he said.

The PCG expressed its gratitude to the CCG for rescuing 17 Filipino crew members of the ill-fated vessel. However, two of the rescued crew members had died.
“The Philippine Coast Guard really appreciates all parties, including the passing CCG, for rendering assistance to our kababayan,” PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Guirao-Cayabyab said. Meanwhile, PCG said BRP Teresa Magbanua conducted radio com -
Research and the Social Weather Stations showing a decline in poverty and hunger incidence among Filipinos at 37 percent and 20.1 percent, respectively.
“The improvements we see in these surveys can be attributed to the intensified and sustained social protection programs under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration. As the lead agency in social protection, the DSWD will continue to implement programs so that we can better protect vulnerable Filipinos,” DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said.
“These are not isolated events,” the think tank said, describing the incidents as “well-documented, brazen, and persisting acts of aggression.”
Stratbase added that tensions escalate not because the Philippines defends its rights, but because China continues to violate them.
The government this week stripped more than two dozen permits from forestry, mining and hydroelectric companies in Sumatra.
This latest landslide also comes after torrential rains battered Indonesia’s Siau island this month, causing a flash flood that killed at least 16 people. AFP
soon rains pummeled parts of South and Southeast Asia late last year, triggering deadly landslides and floods from the rainforests of Indonesia’s Sumatra to highland plantations in Sri Lanka. Around 1,200 people died in the Sumatra flood, and more than 240,000 were displaced, according to the BNPB. Environmentalists and experts have pointed to the role forest loss played in the flooding and landslides that washed torrents of mud into villages.
Dumlao said some of these programs include the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which caters to poorest of the poor with more than 4 million household beneficiaries, and the Walang Gutom Program (WFP), which currently assists close to 600,000 food-poor families. To further bolster the DSWD’s efforts in addressing involuntary hunger in 2026, the Department, in collaboration with food supply partners, plans to expand the Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK) to other parts of the country with high incidence of hunger.
The institute also criticized the Chinese ambassador’s assertion that the South China Sea issue is only a portion of bilateral relations, saying such a view disregards the reality faced by Filipino fisherfolk who depend on the West Philippine Sea for their livelihood and survival.
munications with transiting vessels in waters about 141 nautical miles westnorthwest of Tambobong, Pangasinan, as part of the continuing search for the four missing crew members.
“All transiting vessels in the area are requested to proceed with caution, maintain a sharp lookout, and render assistance as necessary, in accordance with international maritime regulations,” the PCG radio operator said.
On Friday, PCG identified the vessel as the M/V Devon Bay, which was transporting iron ore with 21 Filipino crew members on board.
“For Filipino fisherfolks, the West Philippine Sea is their entire life,” Stratbase said, noting that harassment and restrictions imposed on fishermen directly affect food security and daily survival in areas recognized under international law as belonging to the Philippines. 1Sambayan likewise urged the government to examine local media entities that may be used as platforms for foreign propaganda or disinformation.
The ship was sailing from Gutalac, Zamboanga del Sur, to Yangjiang, China, when it began listing about 25 degrees before issuing a distress call around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The incident occurred roughly 261 kilometers (162 miles) off the northern Philippine coast.
On Friday, the PCG confirmed that a passing CCG vessel had rescued several crew members. Authorities emphasized, however, the ship’s last recorded position remained within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

COCA-COLA Europacific Aboitiz Philippines (CCEAP), the bottling partner and official distributor of Coca-Cola products in the country, has appointed Ramon Christian “Chris” Pesigan as its new president and CEO, effective January 2026.
Pesigan succeeds Gareth McGeown, who served as president and CEO for seven years and led the company through a period of sustained growth and operational milestones in the Philippine market.
Pesigan joined CCEAP in 2013 and has since held several senior leadership roles, including Commercial Go-to-Market director and General Tradedirector. He played a key role in strengthening the company’s commercial strategy and elevating trade execution standards nationwide.
Most recently, he served as commercial vice president for more than two years, where he helped enhance Coca-Cola’s market competitiveness and deepen partnerships with customers, ensuring broader access to its beverage portfolio across Filipino households.
“It is an honor to lead Coca-Cola Europacific Aboitiz Philippines at such a transformative time. With our 9,000 associates as our greatest strength, we remain committed to delivering sustainable growth for our people, customers, and communities,” Pesigan said.
McGeown will assume the role of Vice President and General Manager for Coca-Cola Europacific Partners’ Australia, Pacific, and Southeast Asia business unit. He expressed confidence in Pesigan’s leadership, noting that the appointment reflects the strong foundation built by the organization and its teams.
The leadership transition builds on Coca-Cola’s 114-year presence in the Philippines, as CCEAP continues to advance its role as a total beverage company committed to long-term growth and community engagement.
FTER years of jumping between roles in technology, media and operations, Sherwin Dela Cruz decided to set up AXON Group. The idea took shape gradually, shaped by repeated exposure to how businesses scale in practice—and how slowly office development tends to respond.
A graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, Dela Cruz began his career at IBM Philippines before moving into entrepreneurial roles. He later co-founded video-on-demand platform iflix and served as its Philippine country manager during its expansion years, before leading the Philippine market entry of streaming platform iQIYI.
Those roles demanded speed. Teams had to be built quickly, partnerships secured on tight timelines, and operations adjusted in real timeconditions that rarely align with traditional office development, which often treats growth as a fixed, long-term event. That contrast informed how Dela Cruz began to think about workspaces.
“For many companies, flexi-spaces are a starting point - a temporary solution while teams are forming, testing, or scaling. That’s fine,” he said. “But most of those companies don’t stay there forever. When they grow and need a dedicated office, the usual experience is that they have to start over with a completely new vendor.”
The gap between how companies grow and how offices are delivered became even clearer when he began managing office builds and properties himself, an experience that was further tested during the pandemic. Projects stalled, coordination grew more difficult, and accountability thinned across long chains of vendors.
Rebuilding process
AXON was created to address that gap.
Launched this month at Quad in Bonifacio Global City, the company operates as a workspace delivery platform that combines design, engineering, construction, financing and operations under one system.

RENEWABLE energy provider SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) is promoting inclusive growth in its host communities by empowering women through the Elevate AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Data Annotation) program, which equips participants with data annotation skills for the remote digital workforce.
Some 80 women joined the program’s online orientation in October 2025, followed by a 20-day training and on-the-job program that culminated in the graduation of 44 women from Ifugao on January 15, 2026. The latest cohort builds on SNAP’s first batch in 2023, which graduated 49 women from host communities in Isabela, Ifugao, and Benguet.
“Elevate AIDA reflects our commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. By building digital skills, we open income opportunities that allow women to work from home while managing household responsibilities,” said SNAP president and CEO Joseph Yu.
The Ifugao provincial government, along with Lamut Mayor Mariano Buyagawan, commended SNAP, AFI,
and Connected Women for their collaboration in expanding access to artificial intelligence training and preparing communities for future technologydriven opportunities.
Following the graduation, AFI and UnionBank conducted an online financial literacy and cybersecurity session on January 16 to help graduates manage their finances and stay safe while working remotely.

Rather than coordinating multiple independent firms, AXON assumes responsibility across the entire process. The structure is intended to reduce handoffs, shorten timelines, and make it easier to adjust when requirements change.
“We own the entire process end-to-end— design, construction, sourcing, technology, and even financing—but it doesn’t stop there. We stay with our clients as they grow. Quad might be where a company begins, but when they’re ready to move into their own office, AXON is still there to find the space, design it, build it, and deliver that next stage.” Dela Cruz said.
By standardizing certain engineering decisions and managing execution internally, AXON says it can deliver offices in as little as 75 to 90 days - without restarting the process every time plans evolve. Lowering the barrier
A core part of AXON’s offering is AXON Keys, a managed workspace model that allows companies to move into fully built, technology-ready offices without carrying the burden of upfront capital expenditure.
According to its founder, the model is designed for startups, small and medium enterprises, and virtual or hybrid companies that need physical space without taking on the burden of construction, permits, and contractor coordination.
AXON addresses that gap by owning the process end-to-end - from helping clients secure the right space to designing, building, and delivering it, and then continuing to support them as their business evolves, rather than treating each office as a one-off transaction.
Each space is built around how the company operates, rather than following a fixed template. AXON stays involved beyond delivery, managing the workspace as it is used and adjusted over time.
Live test case
AXON’s first site, Quad, spans 2,400 square meters in BGC and operates as a fully functioning workspace for teams and professionals. It hosts meetings, training sessions, and daily operations, and is designed to shift layouts quickly without requiring new vendor coordination.
Quad is nearing full utilization and also serves as swing space within AXON’s growing portfolio, allowing capacity to reset as client needs change.
“We wanted the first site to be real, not a showroom. If the model can’t hold up once people move in, start using the space, and start changing their minds, then it doesn’t really work,” said the company CEO. Behind the scenes, AXON relies on repeatable engineering decisions and prefabricated components to reduce variability, an approach that lowers defect risk and speeds up approvals.
Building for how companies actually grow AXON is already developing additional sites, with plans to expand beyond its initial footprint. The longer-term goal is to build a repeatable system that makes office expansion more predictable for businesses operating in uncertain conditions.
Dela Cruz sees his move from streaming platforms to workspace delivery as less of a pivot than it appears.
“From a footprint perspective, we’re looking at opportunities nationwide, particularly in high-quality business districts and growth corridors where our model makes sense. That includes exploring how spaces like Quad could evolve over time. That said, we’re very deliberate - we won’t announce anything unless we’re confident a site meets our delivery, operational, and experience standards. It’s going to be a very big year for us - and we’ve only just scratched the surface,” he said. Othel V. Campos

AT JUST 11 years old, Mazel Paris Alegado is already doing what many seasoned athletes only dream of—standing atop an international podium.

The young Filipina skateboarder turned heads in South America after ruling the Women’s Park event at the DC Concrete Line Pro Series in Buenos Aires, Argentina, signaling the arrival of a new star on the world skateboarding stage.
The victory marked Alegado’s first major international title of the year, coming only weeks after her breakthrough debut at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand last December, where she represented the Philippines against the region’s best riders.
Alegado delivered a fearless and polished run to outshine a seasoned international field in one of South America’s premier skateboarding events. The DC Concrete Line Pro Series regularly attracts elite riders from across the globe, making her triumph a significant milestone not only for her young career but also for Philippine skateboarding.
“This was my first time competing in Argentina and it was unforgettable,” Alegado said in an online interview. “The people were so warm and welcoming, and the competition was really strong, so I had to do my best. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you, Argentina.”
Now based in California, Alegado has learned to adapt to constant international travel, moving from one competition venue to another at an age when most children are still in school playgrounds. Despite the challenges, she embraces the grind with confidence, drawing strength from her family’s unwavering support.
“Being away from home can be hard, but I know my family is always behind me,” she said. “That gives me confidence wherever I go.”
Her rise has been swift. After making history with her SEA Games appearance in Bangkok, Alegado wasted little time proving she belonged among the world’s best.
The win in Buenos Aires confirms that her regional breakthrough was only the beginning of what could be a remarkable international career.

BIGGER is the battle cry for the 2026 Sante Barley Trilogy Run Asia, as the country’s premier multi-leg running series raises the bar with a wider reach, longer distances, and richer rewards for runners of all levels.
Staying true to its mission of helping runners “level up,” the 2026 edition will stage ve city-based three-leg series across the country, culminating in the National Finals on November 8 at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.
“We’re hoping to attract even more first-time runners and inspire them to join run clubs and embrace the sport,” said RUNRIO president Rio de la Cruz. “This 2026 will be much, much different compared to last year — more inclusive, more exciting, and more rewarding for all.”
The series will roll out in Manila, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro, beginning in March. Each city will host three legs spread throughout the year, offering runners a progressive challenge designed to build endurance and discipline.
Distances will start at 5K, 10K, and 16K for Leg 1, increase to a 21K half-marathon for Leg 2, and culminate with the signature 32K “Afroman” distance for Leg 3.

REIGNING World 10-Ball Champion Jonas Magpantay is set to carry the Philippine flag in a grueling three-tournament campaign in Indonesia as he opens his 2026 international season against Asia’s top billiards stars.
The 32-year-old cue artist, a native of Bansud, Oriental Mindoro and a proud resident of Barangay Kaunlaran, Cubao, Quezon City, expressed confidence that he can continue his winning form when he competes in three major international events starting later this month.
“I will do my very best. For the flag and country,” Magpantay said.
Fresh off his triumph at the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball in Doha last year, Magpantay will be formally honored as a major awardee at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards Night on February 16, 2026. His Indonesian campaign begins with the Asian Pool Championship set from January 27 to 31, 2026 in Jakarta, where he will face a stacked field that includes fellow world champion Carlo Biado, along with AJ Manas and Kyle Amoroto. Magpantay will then move on to the Carabao International Open from February 4 to 8, 2026, also in Jakarta, before wrapping up his tour at the Kabupaten Semarang 9-Ball Open from February 10 to 15, 2026, to be held at Balai Agung Dusun Semilia, Bawen, Semarang, Central Java.
The three-tournament stretch is seen as a crucial test for the Filipino ace as he seeks to cement his status as one of the world’s elite cue artists and continue the Philippines’ proud legacy in professional billiards.

“This progression allows runners to push their limits gradually,” said de la Cruz. “The 32K Afroman is unique to our series. In running, when you reach 32K, that’s what we call ‘the wall.’ It’s the toughest part, but we’re there to encourage them—because once you pass that, you’re only 10K away from a full marathon.”
Adding to the excitement, this year’s nisher’s medal is an interconnected design that forms a spherical keepsake when all three legs are completed—symbolizing consistency and commitment.
Top finishers in selected age groups will also earn guaranteed slots to the 2027 Sydney Marathon, providing local runners with a rare opportunity to compete on an international stage.
More incentives await dedicated participants. Runners who complete all three legs and the National Finals will receive complimentary running caps, while race towels with city-themed designs will be awarded to nishers in every leg and category.
Looking ahead, de la Cruz revealed that the series could soon go beyond Philippine shores, with Indonesia being eyed for expansion in 2027.

S PET owners increasingly seek natural and wholesome ways to enhance their dogs’ nutrition, the idea of incorporating eggshells into a dog’s diet has gained attention. Eggshells, often discarded as kitchen waste, are actually a rich source of essential nutrients that can benefit canine health in multiple ways.

Nutritional Powerhouse in Eggshells
Eggshells are primarily composed of calcium carbonate, a vital mineral for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Calcium plays a crucial role in muscle function, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. Dogs, like humans, require adequate calcium intake to support skeletal health and overall physiological functions.
As mentioned in the article “Can Dogs Eat Eggshells?” written by Years.com, a single eggshell contains approximately 1,000 milligrams of calcium, which is more calcium than what you would get from drinking three full cups of whole milk. This makes eggshells an incredibly concentrated and natural calcium supplement that can be easily added to your dog’s diet. The article emphasizes that calcium is crucial for dogs, especially for growing puppies, pregnant or lactating females, and senior dogs who may be prone to bone density loss.
Beyond calcium, eggshells also contain other minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium, which contribute to bone health and metabolic processes. The thin membrane lining the inside of the eggshell is rich in collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin—compounds known for their jointsupporting properties. This is particularly beneficial for older dogs or breeds predisposed to arthritis and joint issues.
The eggshell membrane, often overlooked, is a treasure trove of nutrients that support joint health and mobility. According to the article “Benefits of Eggshell Membrane for Dogs” by Seaweed for Dogs, the membrane contains natural compounds like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, which are commonly found in commercial joint supplements. These compounds help reduce inflammation, promote cartilage repair, and improve joint lubrication.
The article by Seaweed for Dogs highlights that supplementing your dog’s diet with eggshell membrane can be a natural alternative to synthetic joint supplements, potentially reducing the risk of side effects associated with pharmaceuticals. This is especially important for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis or other degenerative joint diseases, where maintaining joint function is key to preserving quality of life.
While eggshells are beneficial, it is essential to prepare them properly to ensure safety and maximize nutrient absorption. Raw eggshells can harbor bacteria such as Salmonella, which can be harmful to both dogs and humans. Therefore, cleaning and

sterilizing eggshells before feeding them to your dog is a critical step.
The recommended method is to rinse the eggshells thoroughly and then bake them in an oven at 200°F (93°C) for about 10 minutes. This process sterilizes the shells without compromising their calcium content. After baking, the eggshells should be ground into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or food processor. The fine powder form ensures that the calcium is easily digestible and can be evenly mixed into your dog’s food.
Determining the right amount of eggshell powder to add to your dog’s diet depends on factors such as the dog’s size, age, and overall diet composition. As a general guideline, the article from Years.com suggests that 1 teaspoon of finely ground eggshell powder provides roughly 800 to 1,000 milligrams of calcium, which can be sufficient for a medium-sized dog’s daily calcium needs when combined with a balanced diet.
It is important to avoid over-supplementation, as excessive calcium intake can lead to health problems such as kidney stones or impaired absorption of other minerals. Consulting with a veterinarian before introducing eggshell powder or any supplement is advisable to tailor the dosage to your dog’s specific needs.

PET owners are constantly on the lookout for the next superfood to enhance the vitality of their canine companions. In recent years, the tropical allure of the coconut has moved from our smoothie bowls into our dogs' food bowls. However, as with any human food introduced into a pet’s diet, it is essential to distinguish between a healthy treat and a potential digestive hazard.
Coconut comes in many forms— meat, water, and milk—and each interacts with a dog's physiology differently. To understand whether this fruit is a boon or a bane, we must look at the nutritional science and expert opinions surrounding its use. When considering the raw fruit itself, many wonder if the white, fleshy meat is safe for consumption. According to the article "Can Dogs Eat Coconut?" by the experts at PetMD, the answer is generally yes, but with specific caveats. The meat of the coconut is rich in medium-chain triglycerides, which are fatty acids that can provide a boost of energy and potentially help with inflammation. However, the PetMD authors warn that because coconut

is high in saturated fats and calories, overfeeding can lead to weight gain or, in more severe cases, trigger pancreatitis in sensitive dogs. Therefore, while the meat is non-toxic, it should be offered sparingly as a topper rather than a meal replacement.
Further expanding on the medicinal benefits of this fruit, the article "Is Coconut Good for Dogs?" published by Volhard Dog Nutrition highlights the impressive antimicrobial properties found within. The Volhard Dog Nutrition team explains that coconut contains lau -
Incorporating eggshells into your dog’s diet is not just about calcium supplementation. The eggshell membrane’s collagen content supports skin and coat health, contributing to a shiny, healthy fur. Moreover, the natural origin of eggshell supplements aligns with holistic and raw feeding philosophies, appealing to pet owners who prefer minimally processed ingredients.
The article by Seaweed for Dogs also points out that eggshell membrane supplements may enhance immune function and aid in tissue repair, thanks to their rich protein and nutrient profile. This makes eggshells a multifaceted addition to your dog’s nutritional regimen.
While eggshells offer many benefits, there are some precautions to consider. Dogs with certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease or calcium metabolism disorders, may not be suitable candidates for eggshell supplementation. Additionally, dogs with a history of dietary allergies should be monitored for any adverse reactions when introducing new supplements.
Another consideration is the source of the eggshells. Organic or free-range eggshells are preferable to reduce the risk of pesticide or antibiotic residues. Always ensure the eggshells come from a safe and reliable source. Adding eggshells to your dog’s diet can be a natural, cost-effective way to boost calcium intake and support joint health, skin, and coat condition. The calcium-rich eggshell powder, combined with the joint-supporting eggshell membrane, offers a holistic approach to canine nutrition that aligns with natural feeding trends. Proper preparation and dosage are key to safely incorporating eggshells into your dog’s meals. When done correctly, this simple kitchen byproduct can transform into a powerful supplement that enhances your dog’s well-being naturally and effectively.

ric acid, a powerful compound that helps the body fight off viruses, various yeast infections, and even ringworm. This makes coconut meat more than just a tasty snack; it serves as a functional food that supports the immune system. Furthermore, according to the article by Volhard Dog Nutrition, the anti-inflammatory properties of coconut can help decrease swelling and speed up the healing process for dogs suffering from itchy skin or hot spots. Transitioning from the meat to
the liquid components, coconut water is often touted as a natural electrolyte replacement. According to PetMD, fresh coconut water can be a refreshing treat for dogs, provided it is 100 per cent natural. The authors emphasize that pet owners must avoid commercially packaged coconut waters that contain added sugars or xylitol, the latter of which is highly toxic to dogs. While the potassium and magnesium in coconut water are beneficial, it should never replace plain fresh water as the primary source of hydration.
Coconut milk presents a slightly more complex profile. Because it is processed by pressing the meat with water, it is significantly higher in fat than the water found inside a young green coconut. In the article by Volhard Dog Nutrition, the authors suggest that while a small amount of coconut milk can contribute to a shiny coat and healthy skin, the high fat content requires strict portion control. For dogs with a history of digestive upset or those prone to obesity, the concentrated fats in coconut milk might outweigh the dermatological benefits.
The physical preparation of the coconut is just as important as the nutritional content. A common mistake pet owners make is offering a piece of coconut with the husk still attached. According to the article by PetMD, the tough, fibrous outer shell and the hairy husk are significant choking hazards. More dangerously, if a dog manages to swallow a piece of the shell, it can cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage. The PetMD team stresses that only the processed meat should be given, and it should be broken down into bite-sized pieces to ensure it is easily digestible.

STREAMING platforms are built to suggest what’s popular, but choosing what to watch often comes down to something simpler: personality. Some people want fast-paced stories, others prefer slow conversations or familiar emotions.
In recent years, zodiac signs have become an easy reference point for that kind of self-sorting—less about belief, more about vibe. For K-drama fans, it’s another way to narrow the search without overthinking it.
With that idea in mind, here’s a list of K-dramas available on Amazon Prime Video that will match your tastes to a tee!
Aquarius (Jan. 21–Feb. 19)
You get bored when a show plays

it safe, so you chase stories that feel a little weird in a good way. Try Head Over Heels or Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 when you want something you can’t predict after five minutes.
Pisces (Feb. 20–Mar. 20)
You watch for feeling first, even when you pretend you’re “just curious.” Go for Wedding Impossible or No Gain No Love if you want romance that hits quietly, then lingers after the episode ends.

Aries (Mar. 21–Apr. 20)
You’re not here for long setups—you want the show to move. GOOD BOY or Newtopia fits when you want quick decisions, quick reactions, and no time wasted.
Taurus (Apr. 21–May 20)
You like shows that feel steady, the
kind you can watch with dinner and not feel stressed out. Marry My Husband or My Man Is Cupid works when you want something that doesn’t shout just to keep your attention.
Gemini (May 21–June 21)
You need a show that keeps you awake—good lines, quick shifts, and scenes you’ll end up quoting. Put on Confidence Queen or The Forbidden Marriage when you want something that keeps changing gears.
Cancer (June 22–July 23)
You notice how characters treat each other, even in small moments, and that’s what makes you stay. May I Help You or Head Over Heels is a good pick when you want warmth and care to be part of the story.
Leo (July 24–Aug. 23)
You want leads with presence— people who walk into a scene and make

it theirs. Choose Marry My Husband or Surely Tomorrow when you’re in the mood for big personality and confident storytelling. Virgo (Aug. 24–Sept. 23) You like it when a show feels put together, like someone actually thought through the pacing. GOOD BOY or No Gain No Love suits you when you want something clean, steady, and easy to follow.

Libra (Sept. 24–Oct. 23) You’re drawn to stories where relationships are the main event, not just a subplot.

SOME mornings, makeup takes a minute. Other mornings, it’s just a quick swipe on the lips or cheeks, and somehow that’s enough to feel ready for the day. For today’s generation, beauty is less about flawless looks and more about little touches that let them show who they are. The Milk Tint Milkshake Collection from local cosmetic brand GRWM’s latest line slides into that everyday rhythm, offering soft, buildable color for lips and cheeks. Light shades like Strawberry Milk and Beau suit fair to light skin tones, while medium shades such as Muffin and Parfait work well for medium to medium-tan skin. For deeper complexions, Petite

The week featured some of the most influential menswear designers globally, such as Dior and Louis Vuitton, with collections that varied from classic elegance to innovative streetwear.

His outfit included khaki socks that reached mid-calf, black loafers, and accessories made of metallic pearls. This look introduced a fresh take on seasonal fashion.

ART FAIR Philippines has long been known as a place to see modern and contemporary art up close, but the 2026 edition makes it clear that the experience now extends well beyond gallery booths.
Running from Feb. 6 to Feb. 8 at Circuit Corporate Center
One in Makati, the fair brings together a wide mix of exhibitors alongside curated sections that allow visitors to engage with art in different ways—whether they are seasoned collectors, students, or simply curious first-timers.
Aside from the main exhibitor halls, this year’s fair includes dedicated areas for special projects, digital art, talks, guided tours, and artist residencies. These sections give visitors options on how to spend their time.
One of the more approachable spaces is the Projects section, which is designed to feel less like a formal exhibition
hall and more like a shared public space. Inspired by the idea of a plaza, it encourages people to pause, move around, and engage with works at their own pace, making the experience less overwhelming for casual visitors.
ArtFairPH/Digital also reflects how art consumption has changed. Featuring works that engage with animation, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, the section connects contemporary art with the kinds of media many young people already encounter daily on screens. For those who want context without committing to a full day, the fair schedules guided tours twice daily, while talks held throughout the weekend offer conversations with artists and cultural figures.

SOME vacations start to feel like work before they even begin. You map out places to visit, meals to book, and activities to squeeze into a few days, then spend most of the trip trying to keep up with that plan.
However, after staying a few days at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa as part of a hosted tour, it became clear that a stay doesn’t need much arranging or a checklist to complete.
At Plantation Bay, that ease is intentional. It doesn’t come with the usual “welcome to paradise” fanfare. Everything is more low-key and built around the experience rather than superficial antics.
Plantation Bay’s public relations officer, Charene “Charie” Borres, said the idea at the Cebuano-run resort—known for its manmade lagoons and Moorish-Mediterranean architecture—is to make guests feel like they’re walking into a private rest house.
“If you noticed, we don’t have [distracting] signages, there’s no big name display. Because we wanted [guests] to feel like, ‘Oh, I’m going home to my rest house.’ It’s the kind of luxury we want guests to feel,” she said. Food for every mood Food ends up shaping the days here, simply because there are enough options to let each meal feel different.
At Kilimanjaro Café, the menu is wide enough to work at any point in the day, moving easily from Filipino classics to international comfort food. From

seafood, fried plates, and rice meals. The jumbo tempura prawns stood out for their size, crunch, and picture-worthy presentation, while Manny’s ceviche offered a cleaner, lighter note alongside heavier dishes.
Dinner on the final night was at Palermo, the resort’s Mediterraneaninspired restaurant, which offers a mix of seafood, pasta, and grilled mains. The night’s star turned out to be the Nuclear Kagoshima Wagyu, one of the specialties featured in Plantation Bay’s curated list of signature dishes called the Delicious Dozen. THE soul of a hotel isn’t etched in marble or framed by a view. It’s woven from the quieter threads of human connection. Architecture sets the stage, but it’s the people—the warm smiles, intuitive gestures, and genuine care—who bring it to life. They are the first and lasting impression, the quiet architects of memory, turning a beautiful building into a cherished retreat. True luxury lies not in fixtures, but in the hearts of those who welcome you. In this part of the world, paradise has many names. But at Nay Palad Hideaway, paradise has faces. It’s not found in the pristine pool or the elegant villas alone, but in the human constellation of the community that brings it to life. The true luxury of this retreat isn’t its design, but its people—a team woven from the island’s own vibrant fabric, who don’t just work here; they are the guardians of its spirit.

You are not greeted by staff, but by stewards. There’s Jerome, whose presence is as steady and reassuring as the island’s tide. He remembers not just your name but the rhythm you seek. He reads a quiet daydream for solitude as easily as he senses a budding desire for adventure, appearing not with an itinerary but with a perfectly timed suggestion for a hidden surf break or a sunset paddle. With Jerome, you feel seen, your experience curated by someone who understands both the map of the
island and the landscape of a guest’s curiosity. Then there is Em-em, whose hospitality is a quiet, powerful force. Her service is a seamless dance of anticipation and grace, so intuitive it feels like thoughtfulness itself. A glass of water appears just as you notice your thirst; a forgotten book is found waiting on your lounger after the rain. She moves through the spaces of Nay Palad not as an employee, but as a caretaker of peace, ensuring the rhythm of your retreat flows uninterrupted. In her attentive silence, there is a profound message: you are home. And at the heart of the gathering spaces is John, a natural storyteller whose warm smile is an open door. He is the conduit to Siargao’s soul, mixing local lore
with a calamansi cocktail. He’ll tell you about the full moon celebration in a neighboring barangay, the best time to see the bioluminescent plankton, or why a certain fish is especially sweet this week. Through John, the wider community of Siargao reaches out and pulls you in. He doesn’t just serve a drink; he serves connection. These individuals are not exceptions—they are the norm, united by a shared philosophy. The gardener who names a fragrant flower,

The menu includes massages, scrubs, and facial services, with enough range to match whatever kind of reset you’re after. Some treatments focus on full-body recovery, while others target specific tension points, making it easy to choose depending on how your day went.
Things to do between swims
If you feel like doing more than just swimming, the resort gives you enough options to try something in between.
We started with two of the more actionpacked activities on the property— archery and the indoor shooting range. If you feel like switching things up, there’s wall climbing, biking, pickleball, and a game room that works as an easy break between meals and lagoon time.
Borres said that variety matters for local guests. “For locals, they really want a lot of activities,”she said.“That’s what draws them in.”
A day out on the water
On our last full day before flying back to Manila, we stepped outside the resort for a full island-hopping day, an experience guests can also arrange during their stay. The trip included snorkeling at Hilutungan Channel, followed by a visit to Pandanon Island in Bohol. The snorkeling was the highlight—fish close enough to make you stop and hover. Pandanon was where everything eased up, with an island lunch and enough time to take in the beach before heading back.
Why people come back
Borres said repeat guests make up a big part of their bookings, and she credits that to the kind of familiarity that builds over time between the guests, the resort, and its staff. She added that the resort has long leaned on guest-friendly policies, including a no-tipping setup, all-inclusive stays, and a money-back guarantee.
“Rough estimate… 80 percent are repeat guests,” she said. “Because there are people who’ll say, ‘Oh, I was here last year.’ Then there are staff who remember them, because they already know them. It just shows there’s a connection.”
That connection, she said, comes from consistency, with staff who remember guests and make every return feel effortless.
“There was a couple who stayed with us for three months [last year], and they’re coming back this year for another three,” she said. “And the reason why they came back is because of the staff.”
