HE Philippine National Police (PNP) is reopening its investigation into the 2020 murder of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga.

said the DOJ will file malversation of public funds and, where applicable, plunder raps against contractors and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials involved in anomalous flood-control projects.

He said the National Bureau of Investigation's anti-graft unit has started submitting its findings on the reported substandard and even “ghost’ flood infrastructure deals.

“The NBI is giving me findings already. They are giving findings about ghost projects and we will be filing cases very soon,” he said.

“We will see if plunder charges can be filed. Malversation charges will be filed for sure,” Remulla added.

On Sunday, PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil said he ordered the reopening of the cold case after whistleblower Police Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza told the House Quad Committee that he helped carry out the killing at the behest of ex-PCSO general manager Royina Garma. Mendoza narrated before congressmen how Garma allegedly facilitated the PCSO official’s roadside assassination on July 30, 2020 by providing the necessary information about his schedule, details about his vehicle and the funding necessary to carry it out.

The DOJ chief earlier signed immigration lookout bulletin orders (ILBO) against contractors and DPWH executives linked to anomalous flood-control projects.

The whistleblower also implicated incumbent National Police Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo in the planning of the murder.

However, Remulla said the ILBO request against former DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan was still being processed.

Barayuga was a retired police general and lawyer who supposedly threatened to expose corruption within the PCSO shortly before he was shot dead in Mandaluyong City.

As this developed, Remulla said the DOJ is not inclined to admit couple Pacifico “Curlee” and Cezarah Rowena “Sarah” Discaya as state witnesses

THE legal counsel of Chinese businessman Tony Yang sought to disparage lawmakers’ conclusions about his client’s supposedly sketchy past and his alleged ties with Philippine Overseas Gaming Operators (POGOs) and even organized crime.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Friday celebrated his 68th birthday a day earlier with the annual "Salo-salo sa Palasyo" at Malacañang's Kalayaan grounds.

The said tradition has come to symbolize his administration’s message of openness and connection with the Filipino people.

“I am very interested in how they [Quad Comm members] can prove this criminal network in court. In Congress, lawmakers act as both prosecutor and judge,” he said.

Among the companies implicated are Brickhartz Technology Inc. and Xionwei Technology Co. Ltd., which are being linked to alleged kidnapping.

The two firms supposedly have connections with the Baofu Compound in Bamban, Tarlac, which, in turn, can be directly traced to disgraced ex-mayor Alice Guo.

(DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo in a speech delivered at the UN General Assembly in New York said the Philippines continues to emphasize the “importance of upholding the rule of law and the integrity of the multilateral system in the face of today’s global challenges.”

Navy spokes debunks China claim of military exercises in Scarborough shoal

THE Philippine Navy debunked on Sunday the recent announcement by China that it conducted military exercises off Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal, in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). China reportedly made the announcement coinciding with the fourth Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity between the Philippines, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States within Manila’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the regional waters over the weekend.

Prosecutors buck bid to delay Rody trial

THE International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutors formally stated their opposition to the “indefinite adjournment” of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s trial, as requested by his defense team, citing health reasons.

In a document submitted to the ICC pre-trial chamber dated September 11, the prosecution argued that court proceedings against Duterte

Protest actions also erupted in multiple parts of the country, including a rally staged by a small group of supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte held in a shopping mall compound in Quezon City.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported however, that no untoward incident occurred during the rallies.

UP incurred a ₱2.08-billion reduction in its 2025 budget—the largest in two decades. For 2026, the Department of Budget and Management has proposed a ₱25.82-billion allocation for UP, just about half of the funding the institution had sought.

In separate statements, the UP Office of the Student Regent (OSR), the All UP Academic Employees’ Union (AUPAEU) Diliman, and the UP Diliman University Student Council (USC) called on the UP community to mobilize against what they described as “chronic corruption, neglect of education, and misuse of public funds.”

The OSR criticized the approval of a ₱27.28-billion budget for the Office of the President, contrasting it with what they said was the government’s continued disregard for the needs of students and state universities.

On Thursday, President Marcos signed Executive Order No. 94 establishing a commission empowered to conduct hearings, issue subpoenas, recommend the filing of criminal and administrative cases, and freeze assets linked to questionable transactions.

While in Cambodia earlier this week, Mr. Marcos vowed to name the commission's members within 48 hours, but that deadline has since lapsed, with the newly-created commission remaining faceless.

Speculation is rife that Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong and former Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson are frontrunners for the position. Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson said the chamber’s probe into questionable flood control projects will continue despite the independent commission appointed by the President.

Lacson, who chairs the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, stressed that the committee will operate under what he called a “blindfold mentality,” relying only on evidence and sparing no one in its inquiry.

"The committee’s ongoing inqui-

Expecting a huge number of supporters, the said group only had 15 individuals in attendance and failed to stage a rally at EDSA Shrine.

Instead, the rally was held in a UV Express terminal within the mall premises.

The senator referred to a P355million insertion in the 2025 budget as proof of the need to identify who proposes amendments or insertions in the budget process.

Lacson explained that both the Senate inquiry and the work of the independent commission are complementary rather than competing.

He added that the Blue Ribbon panel would share evidence with the commission and could request documents from it if needed for legislative purposes.

For his part, House Infrastructure Committee Co-chair Rep. Terry Ridon expressed hope the two chambers of Congress would jointly terminate their separate inquiries into anomalous flood control projects to give way to the ICI’s investigation.

“Hopefully, the Senate and the House can come up with a joint undertaking to terminate the proceedings on flood control corruption, and turn this matter over to the independent commission,” he told reporters in Filipino.

Policemen lined up in front of the youth protesters at the gates of the Bulacan 1st District Engineering Office.

Meanwhile, student-protesters from Akbayan Youth BulSU and Katipunan Student Movement (KASAMA) BulSU called for a deeper probe into anomalous flood control projects.

In Bacolod, various civil society organizations and militant groups staged protests actions in the city demanding transparency and accountability of government officials over alleged anomalous flood control projects.

Partido Lakas Manggagawa and Sanlakas held protest actions in the city’s public plaza calling for an end to the corrupt system and the prosecution of corrupt officials from top to bottom.

“If the Commission’s investigation finds that some members of the House conspired with public works officials in anomalous projects, I assure the Filipino people: the House under my leadership will never be a sanctuary for corruption,” he said.

As this developed, the Makati Business Club (MBC) welcomed the President’s decision to form an independent panel to investigate the misuse of flood control funds and other irregularities in infrastructure projects over the past 10 years.

In a statement, the business group said it supports granting the ICI full authority to investigate and pursue the filing of cases “to make those involved fully accountable.”

MBC also urged both the House of Representatives and the Senate to turn over their ongoing probes to the ICI to avoid conflicts of interest and prevent “intramurals that will further erode the image of both institutions.”

While sharing the public’s outrage over the systemic misuse of funds, the group appealed for calm to prevent opportunistic groups from taking advantage of the situation.

It warned against unrest similar to incidents seen in Indonesia and Nepal, and called on the public to give the ICI “a chance to produce results.”

“I need to emphasize that it is not enough to go to jail; it is not enough to be held accountable. People's money must be returned. So, for every criminal case we file with the Ombudsman, there is a twin process to return the people's money,” he pointed out.

Dizon added that investigations and the filing of non-bailable cases against those proven to be involved in corruption in the agency are still ongoing.

The DPWH chief also revealed that his office intends to file cases against corrupt officials weekly.

“We will not stop in the coming days and weeks from filing cases with the Ombudsman. Next week, we will be filing the second case. We are already preparing for the filing of the case for the projects in Oriental Mindoro,” he said.

AFP, DND reject calls to withdraw gov't support

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of National Defense (DND) on Friday night issued a joint statement upholding the Constitution amid calls from anticorruption protesters for the military to withdraw support from the government over the flood control project controversy.

They dismissed these calls as "politically motivated" attempts to distract the AFP from its duty, adding that these are "not only futile but also irresponsible."

Marcos however filed a Motion for Reconsideration (MR) of the joint resolution of the Office of the Ombudsman dismissing the cases against him.

Marcos charged Remulla for allegedly violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, as well as grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of public service.

According to the senator, a case against Remulla is still pending before the Ombudsman.

The DOJ chief was among the 17 applicants for the Ombudsman post interviewed by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) recently.

During the last day of the JBC public panel interviews, Remulla justified the transfer of Duterte to The Hague, which he said was done to maintain the stability of the country and prevent any violence or undesirable events.

Supreme Court (SC) spokesperson Camille Ting clarified earlier that a clearance proving that Remulla was not facing any criminal or administrative case is still required by the JBC, giving him a few weeks to submit the same until the last day of deliberation for the shortlist which will be submitted to the President..

The DOJ chief said the government will also screen the qualification of other persons, such as the engineers involved in the controversy, if they are qualified for state witness status.

Finally, the AFP and the DND called on Filipinos "to place their trust in our democratic institutions, to respect our processes, and to work together in the spirit of patriotism."

“Rep. Tiangco’s statements are nothing more than the voice of frustration. Let us recall that he failed to secure either the Speakership or the powerful Appropriations chairmanship at the start of the 20th Congress,” Barbers said.

“Neither he nor Rep. Albee Benitez was even nominated for Speaker. Not a single member of the House cast a vote in their favor. That reality speaks louder than today’s rhetoric,” Barbers added.

Barbers, who served as lead chair of the celebrated House Quad Comm in the 19th Congress, said that party leaders remain committed to the supermajority coalition under Romualdez, which has driven record legislative productivity.

“The truth is clear: all party leaders remain firmly committed to the supermajority coalition under the leadership of Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez,” Barbers pointed out.

He continued, “This unity has been the cornerstone of the House’s record productivity. Under Speaker Romualdez, the 19th Congress was one of the most productive in our nation’s history, passing landmark laws in support of the Bagong Pilipinas agenda. The 20th Congress is on track to build on that momentum.”

Barbers said the trust of lawmakers in Romualdez remains strong despite attempts to drag him and other House members into allegations over flood control projects.

“The trust and confidence of House Members in the leadership of Speaker Romualdez remain unshaken. Allegations raised against him and other lawmakers regarding flood control projects are baseless, without evidence, and sourced from polluted origins,” Barbers declared.

Barbers noted that the Speaker “has categorically denied these accusations and has repeatedly stated that anyone proven guilty of wrongdoing will never be shielded by his leadership.”

The House remains focused on its work and will not be distracted by political intrigue.

“The House of Representatives stands solid and united. We will not be distracted by intrigues or political sour grapes. Our mission is clear: to continue delivering meaningful legislation and oversight that will benefit every Filipino family,” Barbers said.

Barbers ended the statement by underscoring the need for continuity in lawmaking, not disruption.

‘Bigger war chest vs. fake news’

AHOUSE leader called for increased funding for the Presidential Communications Office to help the government win the “war” against fake news.

Being the lead communications agency of the government, the PCO should be at the forefront of providing the public with accurate information and correcting the falsehoods and disinformation being spread on social media about the government, Parañaque Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan said.

US sets P13.8b aid to boost PH health systems

THE United States government on Friday announced approximately P13.8 billion ($250 million) in foreign assistance to the Philippines aimed at strengthening health systems, improving disease detection and response capabilities, and enhancing maternal and child health services in the country.

“This funding underscores the United States’ unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of the Filipino people and demonstrates our longterm partnership in addressing shared challenges,” US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said. With the new funding, the total of recently announced US foreign assistance committed to the Philippines has reached more than P17 billion ($313 million).

US efforts to improve health outcomes in the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific region focus on the critical areas of tuberculosis control and prevention, global health security, and maternal and child health and nutrition, among other areas.

He said the PCO should provide more resources for its programs on digital media, where most people now go for news and information.

Yamsuan said being critical of the government forms part of one’s freedoms of speech and expression, but deliberately and maliciously spreading

lies and disinformation threatens these very freedoms that are protected under the Constitution.

PCO Assistant Secretary Jose Maria Villarama II said the office “makes do with the funding” it was given under the national budget.

The PCO’s allocation for its digital media initiatives under Malacañang’s proposed spending plan for 2026 is P16 million.

Yamsuan, who is a co-vice chairperson of the committee, asked if this amount is enough for the PCO to counter the onslaught of fake news and disinformation about the government on social media.

He said Congress is ready to support any request of the PCO for additional funding that would help boost its capability to carry out its mandate.

Providing the public with timely, accurate information is of paramount concern now amid allegations of largescale corruption in flood control projects, Yamsuan said.

“This is a war we are having right now with people who have nothing else to do but criticize the government, but don’t know what we sacrifice here, and are unaware of the hard work we do to serve our countrymen in our own capacity as government officials,” Yamsuan said.

Fest marks Quirino’s rich culture, traditions

CABARROGUIS, Quirino—Street dancers and grand parade participants braved the rains as they performed during celebrations to mark the province’s Panagdadapun Festival on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

The five-day feast marking Quirino’s foundation as a province focused on the theme “Honoring 54 Years of Heritage, Advancing Together as a First-Class Province.” Governor Dakila Carlo Cua said the festival shows the richness of Quirino’s culture and traditions.

“The Panagdadapun Festival, from the Ilocano word panagdadapun, means ‘assembly’ or ‘coming together’ wherein the people, including the indigenous folk, band together,” chief tourism operations officer Aurea Martinez said.

Quirino was founded in 1971 through Republic Act No. 6394 after it was carved out of Nueva Vizcaya and named after the sixth President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino.

Aside from the Bugkalots, other Quirino natives include Dumagats, Ifugaos, and Isinays.

The event was marked with the drum and lyre competition, agro-industrial and ecotourism booths and trade fair, discount caravan, pregnant women’s congress, bloodletting, and battle of the bands, among others.

The province’s culture was also promoted in the arts and craft exhibit and the Dapun art showcase, Quirino Got Talent (Season 12), bike fun ride, circumcision operation, Tupad payout and distribution of livelihood assistance and tools, including bakery equipment, cattle, and protective gears for disaster response volunteers.

SENATOR Robinhood Padilla on Friday defended himself after photos and videos circulated online suggesting he raised his middle finger during the singing of the national anthem at Wednesday’s Senate session.

Padilla insisted the photos were misleading, saying he was raising his index finger, not his middle finger.

He described the gesture as a sign of faith in Islam, symbolizing the oneness of God, and not an obscene action.

“I would rather die than do that (obscene gesture),” he said.

“I ask that we not mock this because it is the foundation of the Muslim faith. When we sing the national anthem, we perform this gesture; we truly love the Philippines, but Lord Allah comes first,” Padilla added.

The senator slammed a report from Rappler which erroneously said he flashed the “dirty finger.”

Rappler apologized for the false report, saying no disrespect toward Padilla and to the Muslim community was intended.

“We take responsibility for unclear communication in the newsroom that led to the posting of content that was still being verified. The video was immediately taken down,” Rappler said.

“We would like to assure our Muslim brothers and sisters that there was no intention to put any sector or faith group in a bad light, and that we are strengthening our internal processes to avoid mistakes like this in the future,” it added.

Taal Volcano’s seismic energy release elevated

TAAL Volcano’s seismic energy release is still elevated, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Friday.

The RSAM (real-time seismic amplitude measurement) of Taal Volcano has not returned to background level since a high seismic energy release was reported last month, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said.

A minor phreatic eruption occurred at the summit crater of Taal Volcano at 4:33 p.m. on Thursday, generating white plumes that reached 300 meters above the crater.

The eruption, which was a result of water coming into contact with hot volcanic materials such as hot volcanic gases or hot rocks, lasted for two minutes.

“We need to monitor volcanic gases, which may become vog (volcanic smog), which is detrimental to health,” Bacolcol said.

In case people notice a sulfuric smell, they should wear face masks to cover their mouth and nose, he added.

P34m worth of fake LV bags in Bulacan

THE National Bureau of Investigation has seized more than P34 million worth of fake luxury brand bags in a series of raids at two stores in Bulacan on Sept. 8.

In a statement Friday, the NBI said the raids were conducted at Sponkyboy in Meycauayan and Attractions in Malolos by operatives of the NBI– Intellectual Property Rights Division (NBI- IPRD).

The operations resulted in the seizure of 391 counterfeit Louis Vuitton/LV products, with an estimated value of around P34.979 million.

The complaint was filed by Hongkong-based lawyer Mayank Vaid on behalf of their client, Louis Vuitton, the NBI said.

The respondents are facing charges for violation of Republic Act No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

The NBI reminds the public to refrain from patronizing pirated products to protect the intellectual property rights of owners, and to enhance the country’s economic growth.

Customs seizes P9.3m agarwood at NAIA

THE Bureau of Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle P9.3 million worth of agarwood, a highly valued and regulated forest product at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The BOC-NAIA officials, in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), intercepted three outbound parcels at a warehouse facility in Pasay City.

The parcels were initially declared as “dried alingatong wood chips” but were flagged for inspection due to suspicious images.

Upon physical examination, officials found 12.42 kilograms of agarwood concealed inside, valued at P9,315,000.

The attempted smuggling violates several laws, including the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863), the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147), and the Revised Forestry Code (PD 705). Vito Barcelo

OPINION

The Filipino spirit cannot be negotiated away

WHAT is the worth of a nation if it cannot defend its own dignity? This is the question that defines our current struggle, reason why I stand in absolute solidarity with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s unequivocal declaration: Philippine sovereignty is non-negotiable.

To me, this isn’t just a political stance; it’s a fundamental truth. Sovereignty is not a bargaining chip to be traded away for temporary gain. It is the very lifeblood of our nation, and no other country, no matter how powerful, has the right to trample on it. President Marcos is correct to say this is not a slogan; it is a declaration of the will of an entire people who refuse to be bullied.

Some might view this as an abstract issue, but I know it’s not. This is about the future of our children. It’s about the security of our seas and the food that sustains our families.

The moment we allow compromise, we lose not just territory, but our honor as a people. We must stand firm, and I believe that under President Marcos’s leadership, we are doing just that.

This fight requires all of us to stand together. Our fishermen face harassment at sea every day. Our soldiers risk their lives to guard our waters. Our leaders shoulder the immense weight of international pressure.

The very least we can do is stand with them. Division only makes us weaker. It is only in unity that we find strength. True sovereignty is everyone’s duty, not just a few.

If you need proof of why this fight matters, look no farther than the award-winning documentary, Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea. This film exposes a truth that some would rather keep hidden.

It shows the faces of our fishermen, the struggles of their families, and the incredible courage of a people who refuse to bow down. You cannot watch it and remain indifferent.

The story doesn’t end there. A new film is in the works, produced by the Blessed Movement, which goes even deeper into the daily trials faced by our heroes in the West Philippine Sea.

Sovereignty is nonnegotiable, and the world must respect it

It promises to show the violence committed by foreign aggressors and to clearly articulate our rights under international law. This film will open the eyes of every Filipino to the full truth of our struggle and our historic victory through UNCLOS.

The Filipino spirit cannot be negotiated away. Our seas are ours by law, by history, and by sacrifice. With President Marcos leading and a united people behind him, we will never yield, we will never falter, and we will never be silenced. Sovereignty is non-negotiable, and the world must respect it.

UN General Assembly to vote on a Hamas-free Palestinian state

UNITED NATIONS, New York –

The UN General Assembly will vote on Friday (Saturday Manila time) whether to back the “New York Declaration,” a resolution which seeks to breathe new life into the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine -- without the involvement of Hamas.

Although Israel has criticized UN bodies for nearly two years over their failure to condemn Hamas’s attack on Oct. 7, 2023, the declaration, presented by France and Saudi Arabia, leaves no ambiguity.

Formally called the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, the text states “Hamas must free all hostages” and that the UN General Assembly condemns “the attacks committed by Hamas against civilians on the 7th of October.”

It also calls for “collective action to end the war in Gaza, to achieve a just, peaceful and lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the effective implementation of the Two-State solution.”

The declaration, which was already endorsed by the Arab League and co-signed in July by 17 UN member states, including several Arab countries, also goes further than condemning Hamas, seeking to fully excise them from leadership in Gaza.

“In the context of ending the war

in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international engagement and support, in line with the objective of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State,” the declaration states.

The vote precedes an upcoming UN summit co-chaired by Riyadh and Paris on Sept. 22 in New York, in which French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to formally recognize the Palestinian state.

The gestures are seen as a means of increasing pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza, which was triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas

“The fact that the General Assembly is finally backing a text that condemns Hamas directly is significant,” even if “Israelis will say it is far too little, far too late,” Richard Gowan, UN Director at the International Crisis Group, told AFP.

“Now at least states supporting the Palestinians can rebuff Israeli accusations that they implicitly condone Hamas,” he said, adding that it “of-

Silver lining in ICI

HEARTENING that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has created a three-member independent fact-finding body to probe alleged irregularities in government flood control and other infrastructure projects.

The President’s Executive Order 94, made public on Thursday, more than three weeks after he went ballistic during an inspection tour of reported completed but were in fact “ghost” flood control projects in flooded Bulacan, cited threats to public safety and erosion of public trust.

The order permits the Independent Commission for Infrastructure to “recommend to or request from the appropriate authorities the freezing or seizure of assets, funds, deposits and properties reasonably believed to be connected to anomalous flood control and other infrastructure projects pending investigation.

The body may transfer evidence and findings to appropriate prosecutorial authorities for expeditious prosecution and recommend to authorities the immediate preventive suspension of any public official or employee as it may find necessary to prevent the tampering of evidence or influencing of witnesses during its investigation.

To support its investigation, the ICI may invite and collaborate with public officials or private individu-

fers a shield against Israeli criticism.”

In addition to Macron, several other leaders have announced their intent to formally recognize the Palestinian state during the UN summit.

The gestures are seen as a means of increasing pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza, which was triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas.

The New York Declaration includes discussion of a “deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission” to the battered re-

als “of recognized competence and integrity” and with “established knowledge and expertise in governance, transparency, and accountability” and designate them as special adviser or other capacities.

We hold the hope the suffering masses, deceived and exploited excessively long, will not lose their self-restraint and sense of humor

Public hearings by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, apart from inquiries similarly launched by the House of Representatives, have steadily corroded the public trust in the unabashed private contractors, Public Works Highways officials and district engineers who identified some legislators in the alleged corruption in flood control projects, an accusation the legislators named denied. Also out in the open is a creepy

gion under the mandate of the UN Security Council, aiming to support the Palestinian civilian population and facilitate security responsibilities to the Palestinian Authority.

Around three-quarters of the 193 UN member states recognize the Palestinian state proclaimed in 1988 by the exiled Palestinian leadership.

However, after two years of war have ravaged the Gaza Strip, in addition to expanded Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the stated de-

conflict of interest with flood control projects, with COA Chairperson Gamaliel Cordoba admitting Commissioner Mario Lipana’s wife Marilou Laurio is the president and general manager of a construction firm that actively bags flood control contracts from the DPWH.

Like the masses gasping for life under relentless floodwaters ghost projects have failed to check, we hope the ICI will not just get the knuckles of those guilty rapped but punished to the extent commensurate to their crimes, whatever crimes under existing laws they may be.

We are confident those who will be appointed to the ICI are persons of probity, those with honor, integrity and rectitude.

Whlle everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the masses are not that empty-headed nor feeble-minded.

We hold the hope, while waiting for swift and sweet result of the ICI investigations, the suffering masses, deceived and exploited excessively long by contractors and their partners in crime, will not lose their selfrestraint and sense of humor.

For if they do, the echoes of Raul Manglapus’ oration in 1939 may once more ricochet: “For I who have been silent...will come in the night when you are feasting, with my cry and my bolo at your door. And may God have mercy on your soul!”

“We are going to fulfill our promise that there will be no Palestinian state,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday. China’s man-o’-war ‘sailed through Strait’

BEIJING – China said Friday its third and newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, recently sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait to carry out “scientific research trials and training missions” in the South China Sea.

Fujian is undergoing

sea trials.

The Soviet-built Liaoning is China’s oldest aircraft carrier, commissioned in 2012. The Shandong entered service in 2019.

China’s navy said on Friday the crossregional trials and training for the Fujian “is a normal part of the aircraft carrier’s construction process.”

It is “not directed at any specific target,” Leng Guowei, a spokesman for the Chinese navy, said in a statement.

Japan’s defense ministry said it had

identified three Chinese naval ships on Thursday afternoon, including the Fujian, advancing southwest in waters approximately 200 kilometers northwest of one of the disputed Senkaku Islands.

“Among these, the Fujian aircraft carrier was confirmed by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for the first time,” it said in a statement.

Last year, Chinese vessels sailed near the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands — known as the Diaoyu in China

— a record 355 times, according to Tokyo. Japan said in July that China’s intensifying military activities could “seriously impact” its security, citing the first confirmed incursion by a Chinese military aircraft into its airspace last August in an annual threat assessment.

China also said that a coast guard fleet had “patrolled within the territorial waters of the Diaoyu Islands” on Friday. “This was a rights-protection patrol lawfully carried out,” the China Coast Guard said in a statement. AFP

SoKor workers home after US detention

SEOUL – A specially chartered flight carrying hundreds of South Korean workers detained in a US immigration raid last week landed at Incheon International Airport on Friday, AFP reporters saw. South Koreans made up the majority of the 475 people arrested at a Hyundai-LG battery factory site in the state of Georgia, triggering a delicate effort to resolve the thorny situation between close allies. The Korean Air Boeing 747-8I, with more than 310 South Koreans on board, departed from Atlanta and touched down on the runway at South Korea’s main gateway in Incheon.

“Everything at Atlanta went smoothly,” a foreign ministry official told AFP on Friday, ahead of the workers’ arrival at around 3:25 pm (Seoul is one hour ahead of Manila).

“The plane departed as scheduled with the planned number of passengers.”

Asia’s fourth-largest economy maintains multiple plants in the United States, and has heeded Washington’s push to onshore manufacturing and boost investment in America.

The Georgia raid was the largest single-site operation conducted since US President Donald Trump launched a sweeping immigration crackdown, a top

political priority since he returned to office in January.

Experts say most of the detained South Korean workers were likely on visas that do not permit hands-on construction work.

At the Incheon airport, people were seen holding a satirical placard depicting President Trump in an ICE uniform, wearing a gun, alongside the words, “We’re friends, aren’t we?”

One older man, who was not related to the workers, also staged a protest against the raid, holding a picket that read: “You told us to invest, only to arrest us! Is this how you treat an ally?” AFP

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister

Abbas Araghchi said Thursday (Friday Manila time) that enriched nuclear material remained “under the rubble” of facilities damaged during the recent war with Israel.

“All of our material is... under the rubble of the bombed facilities,” said Araghchi in a televised interview, adding that Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization was assessing the condition and accessibility of the stockpile.

The remarks came after Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency agreed a new cooperation framework on Tuesday. Tehran had suspended ties with the agency following the 12-day war with Israel in June, which saw Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran has accused the IAEA of failing to adequately condemn those strikes. During the interview, Araghchi insisted that new the framework grants access to UN nuclear inspectors only after the approval of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s top security body.

He said the agreement distinguishes between nuclear facilities that were attacked during the war and others which were unharmed, such as the Bushehr reactor in the south. AFP

MOSCOW – Russia and its key ally Belarus are to start major joint military drills on Friday, putting NATO on edge days after Poland accused Moscow of escalating tensions by firing attack drones through its airspace. The “Zapad” exercises also come as Russian forces are grinding across the sprawling front line in Ukraine and escalating aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities.

NATO’s eastern flank members that border Belarus -- Poland, Lithuania and Latvia -- are on high alert over the drills, which Belarus says will be held near Borisov, a town east of the capital Minsk.

All three countries have ramped up security ahead of the exercises, with Poland ordering the complete closure of its border with Belarus for their duration.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned of “critical days” for his country.

He said Poland was closer to “open conflict” than at any point since World War II, after Poland and its NATO allies scrambled jets to down Russian drones flying across its airspace early Wednesday.

Moscow has downplayed the concerns.

“These are planned exercises, they are not aimed against anyone,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Thursday, rejecting Poland’s claim that the drills were an “aggressive” show of force.

But Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also issued a warning over Moscow’s intentions.

“The meaning of such actions by Russia is definitely not defensive and is directed precisely against not only Ukraine,” he said in Kyiv on Thursday.

Usually held every four years, the 2025 iteration of Zapad is the first during the conflict in Ukraine, and is to run until Sept. 16.

Moscow sent around 200,000 troops to similar drills in 2021, just months before it launched its Ukraine offensive.

But this year’s Zapad is expected to be much smaller, since hundreds of thousands of Russian troops are deployed in Ukraine.

In split-up Brasilia, some celebrate Bolsonaro conviction, others fume

BRASILIA – Patrons of a bar in Brasilia cheered and applauded Thursday as expresident Jair Bolsonaro’s guilty verdict appeared on a giant screen in scenes reminiscent of a football match.

“Bolsonaro to jail!” shouted customers of Pardim, well-known as a gathering spot for leftists in a residential neighborhood of the capital of deeply politically divided Brazil.

“I burst into tears. This is a very important moment for which we’ve been waiting a long time,” Sofia Araujo, a 20-year-old student, told AFP on the bar’s terrace.

Allies bolster Poland airspace security

WARSAW – France and Germany moved to bolster defense of Polish airspace Thursday as the UN Security Council called an emergency meeting to discuss Warsaw’s accusation that Moscow launched a drone raid on its territory.

Poland branded the incident, which prompted Polish and NATO forces to shoot down several drones overnight Tuesday to Wednesday, a deliberate “unprecedented” attack on the country, NATO and the European Union. Moscow denied targeting the country and said there was no evidence the drones were Russian. The drones intruded as Russia unleashed a barrage of strikes across Ukraine as part of an ongoing offensive there following its 2022 invasion. US President Donald Trump, who has been trying unsuccessfully to broker a halt to the war in Ukraine, told reporters on Thursday that the alleged incursion may have happened by “mistake”.

But Polish President Karol Nawrocki warned Thursday during a visit to an airbase in western Poland that the incident was “an attempt to test the mechanism of action within NATO and our readiness to respond”. AFP

Japan centenarians now nearly 100,000

TOKYO – The number of people aged 100 or older in Japan has hit a record high of nearly 100,000, with almost 90 percent of them women, ministry data showed on Friday.

The figures underscore the demographic crisis gripping the world’s fourthbiggest economy as its population ages and shrinks.

As of September 1, Japan had 99,763 centenarians, up 4,644 year-on-year, with 88 percent of them women, the health ministry said in a statement.

Japan’s oldest person is 114-year-old Shigeko Kagawa in the Nara region near Kyoto.

She remained active past 80 years old as an obstetrician-gynecologist and a general doctor, according to the ministry. “Walking extensively during house calls built strong legs, which are the source of my current vitality,” Kagawa was cited as saying in the statement. AFP

“Today is conviction day, so it’s a day of celebration,” said Pardim, 47.

Near the former president’s Brasilia home where he is under house arrest, the mood was very different.

Dozens of supporters gathered for a prayer vigil, many waving Brazilian, US or Israeli flags.

“President Bolsonaro, we love you!” Rita dos Passos, 59, shouted into a microphone on a truck-top platform.

“Come back, Bolsonaro,” read a banner draped across the platform — a reference to Bolsonaro’s hopes of making a comeback in 2026 elections, despite his legal woes. AFP

“I am very happy. Today we can celebrate because justice has been served,” she said. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted of plotting to claw back power from his elected successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva through force in 2022. He was also accused of being aware of a plot to assassinate Lula and others. Bar owner Jarbas Campos Pardim said he bought 80 cases of beer and fired up the barbecue for Thursday’s hearing, during which the last two of five judges voted to convict the far-right former army captain. The final verdict was 4-1.

Isko sacks 7 cops over ‘extortion, misdemeanor’

MANILA Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso ordered on Friday

the immediate relief of the Manila Police District’s (MPD) Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) following allegations of extortion and misconduct.

“There is no place for dishonesty in the city of Manila, not even in the ranks of the police. We cannot let abusers go unpunished, especially when ordinary people are being tortured,” the mayor said in Filipino.

He added that the relief order was necessary to help restore public confidence in law enforcement even as the case was under investigation.

The sanction stemmed from a delivery rider who sought help from the National Police Commission (Napolcom) alleging that he and a companion were arbitrarily arrested by seven operatives of the DEU.

The complainant said he was eventually released, but the arresting team took ₱9,000 from his GCash account and seized his companion’s motorcycle.

MPD chief Brig. Gen. Arnold Abad relieved the unit and directed its members to report to the Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit (PHAU).

For his part, Napolcom Commissioner Vicente Calinisan noted discrepancies between the riders’ sworn statements and the police report dated Sept. 10 asserting that the two men had been arrested on drug-related charges.

The seven policemen involved in the incident face multiple administrative charges including grave misconduct, grave irregularity in the performance of duty, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.

AFP steps into flood control mess

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday said if requested, it is prepared to assist the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in inspecting questionable flood control projects.

“The AFP, through the Corps of Engineers and in coordination with other units, remains ready to provide support when directed,” AFP spokes -

person Col. Francel Margareth Padilla told Manila Standard.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon in a recent interview said assistance from

the police and military are necessary, because the agency could not handle the inspection of thousands of projects.

Padilla said the military could complement DPWH efforts by conducting site inspections, providing security, and ensuring transparency.

She added that the AFP’s offer of support was consistent with its broader mandate of defense and nation-building, adding that “safeguarding the integrity of vital infrastructure contributes to the welfare and protection of our people.”

Oil firms forecast mixed price movements next week

CONSUMERS can expect a mixed oil price movement next week with diesel increasing by up to P0.50 per liter and gasoline with a possible increase or rollback of P0.10 per liter.

Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas said this is based on the price movement indication for the week of Sept. 15, 2025 based on this week’s Mean of Platts Singapore and foreign exchange average for the first four days versus last week’s full week average.

“Singapore diesel price continued to mirror the strength in the European market, which drives global diesel demand trade. Expectations of supplies tightening amid upcoming refinery turnarounds continue to support diesel fundamentals as well,” Bellas said.

He said gasoline demand was easing up as summer driving season comes to a close, but planned maintenance at major refineries was expected to tighten supply.

“While the average price of crude oil this week is still slightly lower compared to last

week, prices have been on an uptrend due to concerns that the potential new sanctions on Russia and expansion of secondary tariffs to its major buyers could disrupt Russian crude exports and tighten global supply,” Bellas said.

He said mounting geopolitical tensions after Israel attacked the Hamas leadership in Qatar, as well as Poland’s downing of Russian drones over its airspace have caused oil prices to rise “but gave up most of the gains as there was no immediate threat of oil supply disruption.”

A new DPWH team has already been deployed to review over 100 questionable infrastructure projects nationwide. Dizon is set to join Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong next week to inspect projects in the highland summer capital and La Union province. T he move comes as President Marcos signed an executive order creating the Independent Commission for Infrastructure on top of several government bodies looking into alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

PNP rescues Fil-Chi kidnap victim, nabs 11 suspects

PERSONNEL of the Philippine National Police’s AntiKidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) have arrested 11 kidnapping suspects and rescued a 78-year-old FilipinoChinese victim in an operation in Quezon City, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Friday.

At a press briefing in Camp Crame, Remula said the victim, a businesswoman, was rescued while withdrawing a supposed ransom of PHP150 million demanded by her abductors, on Sept. 11, after more than a week in captivity. She was abducted on her way to work along C3 Road in Quezon City on Sept. 2, and detained at a “safehouse” in Laurel, Batangas. After agreeing with the ransom demand, the family – without the suspects’ knowledge –informed the police about it, prompting the latter to plan a rescue operation.

On the day the victim was withdrawing the money, the bank operators, who already knew of the situation, contacted the police through a 911 call. After 2 minutes, police swooped in and arrested three suspects who accompanied the victim –two former Marines and a former Army personnel.

Labor attache in flood control mess recalled

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has ordered the recall of labor attaché Macy Monique Maglanque, currently stationed in Los Angeles, California to face an investigation over her alleged connection to MBB Global Properties, a company linked to the flood control projects scandal.

According to DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, the recall is a “procedural step” to allow Maglanque to respond to the allegations in the Philippines. No sanctions have been imposed yet against Maglanque, but Cacdac emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in public service. He said Maglanque will face the probe at the home front to address the allegations, ensuring due process and transparency. Vito Barcelo

Obiena begins pole vault campaign at World Athletics

FILIPINO pole vault ace Ernest

John “EJ” Obiena is set to open his campaign at the 2025 World Athletics Championships on Saturday (Sept.13) in Tokyo, Japan, carrying with him the momentum of a podium fi nish earlier this week.

Obiena bagged the bronze medal at the World Athletics Continental Tour in China on September 8 after clearing 5.65 meters. China’s Tao Zhong captured gold on countback with a 5.75-meter clearance, while American Cole Walsh settled for silver with the same height.

The result provides a timely boost for Obiena as he heads into the global meet, where he will compete in Group B alongside world No. 1 Armand Duplantis of Sweden.

The qualification round is scheduled for Saturday evening’s session at around 6:00 p.m. local time. (5 PM in PH)

Obiena, who soared to a historic 6.00 meters in the 2023 edition to set both the Asian and Philippine records, aims to reprise his recordbreaking form in Tokyo. The World Athletics Championships run from September 13 to 21.

Fil-Chinese seniors vie in ASEAN cage tourney

THE FILIPINO-CHINESE Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) leaves for Tangerang, Indonesia on Monday, with hopes of defending its 70-and-above division title in the 34th ASEAN Seniors Basketball Tournament.

Leading and funding the team are Rain or Shine co-team owner Terry Que and Ironcon Builders’ Jimi Lim who both vowed to extend their reign in the tournament designed for players with Chinese blood.

The enthusiasm of the two godfathers got a boost after the addition of Danny Ching – a topnotch player in various Fil-Chinese leagues during his prime – and former University of the East star Julio Cruz.

Other members of the team are Andrew Ongteco, James Chua, Alfonso Kaw, Edward Tio, Roberto Poblete, and Secinando Santos

After finishing runner-up two years ago, FCVBA bounced back and won the title last year undefeated, a feat capped by a 62-40

drubbing of Hatyai of Thailand. Like last year, FCVBA will only compete in one age category. The Fil-Chinese Seniors once enjoyed the tag

as “untouchables” in the annual event having lorded over the 45-and-above, 50-and-above, 60-and-above and 65-and-above divisions in numerous occasions.

Zaragosa masters full-length ICTSI Negros Classic, wins by 2

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL—In a test of precision and smart play versus power, Rupert Zaragosa once again proved that pinpoint iron game and a deft putting touch can overcome sheer distance, winning the ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic here – this time in full, across 72 holes.

Zaragosa posted a final-round 66 to close out the tournament at 14-under 266, securing a two-shot triumph over long-hitting contenders Keanu Jahns, Aidric Chan and Clyde Mondilla. It was a performance that not only validated his weather-shortened win here last year but underscored his versatility, maturity and ability to thrive under pressure against three of the game’s power players.

“This one is more memorable – first, it was a four-day tournament, and it was the first time my mom and my sister Precious were there to witness me win on Tour,” said Zaragosa in Filipino. while comparing this win to his weathershortened victory last year.

Zaragosa, who pocketed the top purse of P354,000, immediately set the tone on Friday with a crisp 12-foot birdie putt on the opening hole – one that Chan matched, but Jahns failed to convert from closer range. While both challengers mounted occasional surges, they couldn’t shake off Zaragosa, who consistently neutralized their power with clinical iron shots that left him within makable birdie range.

Even a bogey on the 18th couldn’t derail his title run as Zaragosa strode up the par-5 final hole with a commanding three-shot lead – secured by an insurance birdie on the par-3 16th.

He admitted feeling the nerves even with a three-shot lead heading to the final hole.

“I don’t know why, but I felt the most pressure when I stepped onto the 18th tee.”

When asked what the win meant to him, Zaragosa said: “I really wanted this win as I try to build confidence heading into my campaign in Japan next month.”

Despite being outhit and outdriven by his rivals, he stayed focused on his own strategy.

“I didn’t really mind it. I knew they had the

advantage with their power, but I just stuck to my game plan,” said Zaragosa, emphasizing that the key was having the will to win and the confidence to execute.

After missing his approach in the rain and chipping well past the pin on the 18th, he twoputted for a 6. But the damage was minimal. His victory – his first after a six-shot win last year that drew skepticism due to the event being shortened to 36 holes – was now beyond doubt. This time, he proved he could come out on top, even under far tougher conditions. His victory also punctured Jahns’ growing momentum, which had been fueled by consecutive four-shot wins at Caliraya Springs and Binitin.

Chan and Jahns kept the pressure on from the start but couldn’t stir Zaragosa’s calm and confidence, rooted in a third-round 64 that propelled him to the top.

Zaragosa also credited his iron play for a final-round charge that included six birdies and two bogeys – the first from a failed up-anddown on the par-3 No. 8, which came right after he drained a monster birdie putt on the seventh to gain a two-shot cushion over Jahns. Jahns stumbled with a costly bogey on the 13th. He rebounded with a birdie on the 15th and closed with a 67, tying Chan, who shot a bogey-free 66, at 268.

CELEBRATING PRESIDENT MARCOS JR.’S 68TH BIRTHDAY

PBBM’S BDAY WISH:

Better life for all Filipinos

ON HIS 68th birthday today, President

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has set aside personal wishes and instead voiced hopes for the continuity of his administration’s initiatives, underscoring his desire to leave behind reforms that will outlast his six-year term.

In his BBM Podcast, President Marcos was asked what he wished for amid the challenges of his presidency. The President’s response was measured, framing his birthday wish not as something for himself but for the nation.

“It’s simple,” President Marcos said. “For this administration, I hope we can complete what we are working on. Of course, there are many things that won’t be finished in six years. So, I just hope we can start them so that the next administration will continue, because it would be a waste otherwise, and the results have been good.”

Among the centerpiece initiatives are the “Build Better More” program, which expands on the previous administration’s infrastructure initiatives by constructing railways, seaports, and digital infrastructure, and ongoing energy projects designed to secure reliable electricity across the country, particularly in provinces

that have faced repeated power outages.

In a separate interview during his three-day state visit in Cambodia, President Marcos said his birthday wish has not changed since he assumed the presidency in 2022: A better life for every Filipino, particularly the poor.

“My wish remains the same, that life will be better for every Filipino, that we continue our projects to help especially the poor,” the President said.

“And it has never changed: I hope we reach, and we will reach, my dream of a Philippines without hunger,” he added.

This vision is closely tied to programs like the “Walang Gutom 2027” initiative, which provides digital food stamps to the poorest households to fight involuntary hunger, and the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” stores, which sell rice, vegetables, and other essentials at affordable prices in communities nationwide.

His administration also promotes the “Zero Balance Billing” program in government hospitals to ease the burden of medical costs for the poor. The President also highlighted the country’s economic progress and what he described as growing international recognition for both the Philippines and its people.

“The economy is doing well. The world looks at us favorably, and even more so, the world looks at Filipinos highly,” he said.

“Everywhere I go, kings, presidents, prime ministers all say: ‘Send more Filipinos, they help us.’

That’s the kind of praise that truly warms the heart.”

For the President, who is facing political and economic headwinds, his birthday wishes underscore a long-term vision he has repeatedly emphasized— that the country’s gains must be safeguarded beyond his tenure and that no Filipino should go hungry.

The best gift that Congress can give the President is a budget that truly addresses the needs of the people: health, education, food security, and employment.

the facts and opinions before making a decision. This methodical approach is a hallmark of his governance style, a trait he attributes to his father, from whom he learned the importance of efficiency and not wasting time. Anecdotes from his younger days and his time as a congressman and senator reveal a man who was always more focused on getting things done for his constituents rather than making grand, sweeping speeches. For instance, in his early political career, he was instrumental in passing a law that established the Philippine Youth Commission and focused most of his development funds on organizing cooperatives for farmers and teachers in his home province of Ilocos Norte. These actions show a leader with a pragmatic and results-oriented mindset.

A LEADER’S JOURNEY:

Steering the nation forward

Looking back at the legacy of PBBM’s presidency

FEW political figures in the Philippines are as widely recognized or as deeply rooted in the nation’s history as Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., affectionately known to many as “Bongbong” or “BBM.”

From a young man stepping into the political arena to the 17th President of the Philippines, his story is one of a return to power, shaped by a compelling vision of national unity and a steadfast focus on the country’s economic and social renewal.

Born on September 13, 1957, in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Marcos Jr. grew up in a household where public service was not just a duty but a way of life, with his father, the late Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., serving as the nation’s 10th President and his mother, Imelda Romualdez Marcos, as a formidable First Lady.

Eventually, his educational path took him from the halls of La Salle Greenhills in the Philippines to the prestigious Worth School in England, and a Special Diploma in Social Studies from Oxford University. He later pursued a Master of Business Administration at the Wharton School of Business, though his studies were cut short by the call to public service. At just 23, he began his long career as Vice Governor of Ilocos Norte, eventually serving as governor of the

province from 1983 to 1986 and again from 1998 to 2007. He also served as a congressman for the second district of Ilocos Norte and a senator, where he focused on legislative work that supported overseas Filipino workers and promoted renewable energy, long before it became a global priority. This extensive experience in local and national government provided him with a deep understanding of the country’s diverse needs, from the grassroots level up to the national policy-making table.

His ascent to the presidency culminated in a landslide victory in the 2022 elections.

Marcos Jr.’s campaign was built on the powerful and resonant message of “unity,” a call that struck a chord with millions of Filipinos seeking to move past divisions and forge a collective path forward. He secured a historic majority, becoming the first president since the Fifth Republic to win by such a margin. His inauguration at the National Museum of Fine Arts, a symbol of the country’s rich cultural heritage, underscored his administration’s commitment to reviving national pride and strengthening the Filipino spirit.

Establishing his goals as a national leader

Since he assumed office, President Marcos Jr. has laid out an ambitious eight-point socioeconomic agenda aimed at steering the country toward a more inclusive and sustainable future.

At the heart of his economic policy is a focus on fiscal discipline and a vigorous push for digitalization to improve tax collection efficiency and streamline government processes.

This has been complemented by a strategic emphasis on public-private partnerships to attract investments and accelerate the country’s infrastructure development under the “Build, Better, More” program, an evolution of the previous administration’s initiative. Notable projects include the expansion of roads, bridges, and railways that aim to decongest traffic, reduce travel time, and connect communities, thereby boosting economic activity and enabling people to spend more time with their families. The administration has also been proactive in its efforts to make the Philippines more attractive to foreign investors through various foreign trips and bilateral agreements, all to create more quality jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Meanwhile, a central tenet of the Marcos Jr. administration has been the push for greater accountability and transparency in government. Recognizing that corruption at both local and national levels hinders progress, the President has emphasized digitalization as a key tool in this fight. By modernizing government

services through initiatives like the eGov Super App and enhancing the electronic procurement system, the administration aims to minimize human discretion and reduce opportunities for graft. He has also highlighted the importance of public participation, championing reforms such as the Government Procurement Act of 2024, which mandates the disclosure of data throughout the procurement process to allow for civic oversight. This focus on digital transformation and open governance is seen as a way to build a more efficient, trustworthy, and responsive bureaucracy that can better serve the needs of the Filipino people.

Boosting food security and the economy

In the realm of food security, the President has prioritized agriculture, even taking on the role of concurrent Secretary of the Department of Agriculture for a period to personally oversee the sector’s revitalization. His administration has poured significant resources into agricultural programs, aiming to boost local production and provide farmers with the necessary support, equipment, and irrigation systems. The goal is not just to address food inflation but to achieve a degree of food sovereignty, making the country less dependent on imports. The administration has also been focused on modernizing the sector through technology and providing financial assistance to farmers, recognizing that the strength of the nation is tied to the productivity and well-being of its farmers and fisherfolk.

His foreign policy, meanwhile, has been marked by a complex and strategic balancing act. While strengthening the Philippines’ traditional alliances, particularly with the United States, Marcos Jr. has also worked to maintain and expand ties with other nations, including China, acknowledging its essential role as a trade partner. This “independent foreign policy” approach aims to secure the country’s national interest and promote peace and stability in the region. The administration has also put a strong emphasis on protecting the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who are considered modern-day heroes for their invaluable contributions to the national economy.

Beyond economic and foreign policy, the President has focused on improving social services. His administration has worked to provide more accessible healthcare by building and upgrading health facilities and expanding social health protection programs. In education, there has been a push to address the classroom backlog, provide teachers with the necessary tools, and reform the curriculum to better prepare students for the demands of a modern, globalized world.

As President Marcos Jr. celebrates his birthday, his tenure continues to be a period of significant change and adaptation for the Philippines. He has demonstrated a clear and unwavering commitment to his vision of national unity, laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and resilient nation.

A LEADER’S JOURNEY:

Getting to know PBBM

TO understand a leader is to look beyond the titles, the speeches, and the policies. It is to peer into the man himself—the forces that shaped him, the life he leads when the cameras are off, and the private world that informs his public persona.

For President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., his journey is rich with history, personal

anecdotes, and a surprising glimpse into a life lived outside the political limelight.

As the nation marks his birthday, it is a fitting time to explore not just the President, but the man, an individual whose life has been a tapestry woven with the threads of both a storied past and a demanding present. Through an examination of his personal life—from his upbringing and education to his family dynamics and private passions—we can begin to piece together a more complete portrait of the leader currently at the helm of the Philippine government. This personal lens offers a unique perspective on the man who, despite his controversial history, was elected with an overwhelming mandate to lead the country into a new era.

Born into an influential family in the country, Marcos Jr.’s childhood was far from ordinary. He grew up in the hallowed halls of Malacañang Palace, a living witness to the inner workings of governance and the weight of a nation’s destiny. His upbringing was one of discipline and high expectations, a direct reflection of his father, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., and his mother, former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos. His education, a blend of local schooling at La Salle Greenhills and international exposure at Worth School in England, was meant to prepare him for a life of service.

Despite the grandeur of his public life, those who know him describe a man with a deep-seated love for simple pleasures and

a grounded family life. At the center of his world is his wife, First Lady Liza AranetaMarcos, a no-nonsense lawyer and educator whose quiet strength has been a constant anchor throughout his political life. Their partnership is often described as one of mutual respect and shared purpose, with the First Lady providing counsel and support from a private, but influential, vantage point. Together, they have raised three sons— Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro,” Joseph Simon, and William Vincent “Vinny”—a dynamic that has softened his public image and shown a more human, paternal side. Accounts from the First Family and close friends paint a picture of a hands-on father who values family time above all else. This domestic foundation is a stark contrast to the often-tumultuous world of politics, providing him with a much-needed sanctuary from the pressures of his office.

Away from the relentless schedule of meetings and official functions, the President has a few interests that offer him a mental and physical respite. He is known to be an avid reader, a habit that allows him to delve into subjects beyond state affairs and gain new perspectives. This intellectual curiosity is a driving force behind his daily routine, which, according to a televised vlog, begins early in the morning with him reviewing important messages and documents. Another notable interest is his passion for wellness and physical health.

Despite the taxing nature of the presidency, he makes it a point to stay Turn to B2

Local shares slip, ignore US market rally on lack of data

THE Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) closed slightly lower Friday, shedding 17.68 points, or 0.29 percent, to 6,109.21.

The broader all shares index also slipped 6.14 points, or 0.17 percent, to 3,685.59.

Analysts said the market remained relatively flat for the week as investors awaited fresh domestic developments.

The peso remained strong, closing at 57.1 to the U.S. dollar Friday, up from 57.191 Thursday.

Luis Limlingan, head of sales for Regina Capital Development Corp., said investors ignored the better-than-expected U.S. inflation report that bolstered hopes for nearterm interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

In contrast, Wall Street surged to new record highs, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow all advancing as cooling inflation data fueled optimism for a more accommodative monetary policy stance.

Value turnover was P5.4 billion.

Market breadth was nearly evenly matched with 98 gainers, 96 decliners and 61 issues unchanged.

Analysts note that while external factors such as the U.S. monetary policy outlook are supportive, local investors are likely waiting for domestic cues, such as economic data or corporate earnings, before taking more decisive positions.

Most Asian markets extended gains Friday, tracking record highs across Wall Street, after US inflation and jobs data all but set in stone a Federal Reserve interest rate cut next week.

The bullishness that has characterized trade for the past few weeks has ramped up since a series of reports indicating the labour market in the world’s biggest economy was slowing sharply.

Adding to that has been relief that a feared spike in inflation caused by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs has not so far emerged, giving the central bank room to loosen monetary policy.

And that trend continued Thursday with figures showing August consumer prices rose a little more than the previous month but in line with expectations, while jobless claims hit their highest level in four years. With AFP

AboitizPower unit secures P7.4-b loan for solar project

ABOITIZ Renewables Inc. (ARI), through its wholly-owned subsidiary AP Renewable Energy Corp., has signed a P7.4 billion project finance deal with the Bank of the Philippine Islands to fund the engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of the 221-megawatt peak Olongapo solar power plant in Zambales.

In a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Friday, Aboitiz Power Corp. said the project is 95 percent complete and is on track for testing and commissioning by the third quarter of 2025. It will connect to the Castillejos 230-kilovolt substa-

tion of the grid operator.

Upon completion, the Olongapo plant will be Aboitiz Renewables’ largest solar project to date.

“Olongapo Solar represents a major contribution to AboitizPower’s clean energy portfolio and more so

to achieving the Philippines’ energy transition targets,” said Jimmy Villaroman, president of ARI.

“Every project we build is the product of a highly motivated organization contributing to AboitizPower’s energy transition effort.”

AP Renewable Energy, the project company for the Olongapo solar power plant, began construction in the first quarter of 2024. The company is wholly owned by ARI, the renewable energy arm of AboitizPower.

Aboitiz Renewables holds AboitizPower’s investments and interests in various renewable energy projects, including geothermal, large hydro, runof-river hydro, wind, battery energy storage systems and solar projects.

Based on data from the Energy Regulatory Commission, AboitizPower is the market leader in power generation capacity, with a national market share of 23.86 percent as of July 2025.

The Aboitiz Group holds a total capacity of 6,774.442 megawatts in the national grid. It is also the most dominant player in the Luzon grid with a 26.95 percent market share (5,567.913 MW) and in the Mindanao grid with a 14.9 percent share (638.83 MW).

Together with its partners, AboitizPower also offers the largest renewable energy portfolio in the Philippines based on installed capacity under its operational control.

VinFast, V-Green offer free nationwide charging for EVs until 2027

VIETNAMESE electric vehicle

maker VinFast has partnered with V-GREEN to provide free charging at all V-GREEN-operated ports nationwide until May 1, 2027.

VinFast said the program could help motorists save the equivalent of years’ worth of fuel expenses.

The offer is made possible through its partnership with V-GREEN, which targets the installation of up to 15,000 charging ports nationwide by 2025.

The initiative, exclusive to VinFast owners, applies to all current and future models sold in the Philippine market. It aims to reduce the cost of EV ownership and encourage wider adoption of electric mobility, a move seen as timely with fuel prices remaining volatile.

The network will cover malls, expressways, commercial districts and other high-traffic areas across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Apart from free charging, VinFast offers buyers up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometers warranty on both vehicles and batteries, along with nationwide service and showroom coverage.

The program complements

incentives under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, or EVIDA, which exempts EVs from excise tax and grants benefits such as priority registration and green lane access. Industry analysts said the initiative is expected to accelerate EV adoption in the country while contributing to efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector.

DA pushes Senate accord on marine biodiversity treaty

THE Department of Agriculture has pledged full support to the Department of Foreign Affairs in pushing for Senate

concurrence on the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, or BBNJ.

The treaty is vital for an archipelagic country like the Philippines, not only in safeguarding global marine resources but also in strengthening its role in shaping international marine policy, supporting coastal communities and advancing biodiversity protection in line with the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award.

“The BBNJ Agreement is crucial for conserving and sustainably managing marine biodiversity in areas beyond

the Philippines’ jurisdiction, allowing the country to safeguard its rich marine ecosystems while ensuring fair access to and equitable sharing of benefits from marine genetic resources,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ratified the treaty in 2024, a year after its adoption, but Senate approval remains pending. An implementing agreement under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, or UNCLOS, the BBNJ covers conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, such as the high seas. Globe gets P5-b term loan from Bank of Commerce

GLOBE Telecom Inc. said Friday it secured a P5-billion term loan from the Bank of Commerce to support its capital expenditures, refinance debt and meet other general corporate needs.

Globe’s capital expenditure guidance for 2025 is below $1 billion, which reflects the company’s continued investments to strengthen and future-proof its network, ensuring it remains responsive to the growing demand for digital services and emerging technologies.

The company invested about P18.9 billion in capex in the first half, or 33 percent lower compared to the same period in 2024.

Globe said that in line with its

optimized capital deployment initiatives, the cash capex-to-revenue ratio improved to 24 percent from 34 percent, and the capex-to-EBITDA ratio decreased to 45 percent from 66 percent.

Around 91 percent of Globe’s cash capex was invested in data requirements, reinforcing its commitment to expanding digital infrastructure.

The company reported a net income of P12.4 billion in the first six months of the year, down by 14 percent from P14.5 billion in the same period last year.

This included a P2.6-billion gross gain booked last quarter from the deemed disposal of shares, following MUFG’s acquisition of an 8-percent stake in Mynt, alongside higher equity earnings from affiliates.

Coca-Cola, Aboitiz launch construction of manufacturing facility in Tarlac City

COCA-COLA Europacific Aboitiz Philippines (CCEAP), a joint venture between Coca-Cola Europacific Partners’ (CCEP) and Aboitiz Equity Venture Inc. (AEV), is building a new state-of-art manufacturing facility in Tarlac City.

The facility will rise on a 42-hectare lot within TARI Estate and will be one of CCEP’s largest manufacturing sites globally. It is also one of its most significant infrastructure investments to date.

“This new development cements our solid partnership with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. It’s a strategic move: we need to protect and grow Coke’s market share while driving development in local economies. It signals to the market that Central Lu-

zon is ready—ready to lead the next wave of industrial growth in the Philippines,” said Sabin Aboitiz, president and chief executive of AEV.

“Coca-Cola is everywhere. It’s the most popular brand in the world, sold in more than 200 countries and enjoyed about 2.2 billion times every single day. The brand appears in over 33 million outlets and claims more than half of the global beverage market,” Aboitiz said.

The company did not provide information about investment figures and capacity details.

Gareth McGeown, president and chief executive of CCEAP, said the project is part of Coca-Cola’s longterm strategy in the country.

“This investment and expansion of our operations reflect Coca-Cola’s deep commitment to serving our mil-

cial Advisor to the Prime Minister.

“Today’s discussions confirmed steady progress in cooperation across various fields, including large-scale infrastructure development, disaster prevention, information and communications, energy, and the Mindanao peace process,” Dr. Masafumi said.

“Your [Japanese government] confidence will be invested properly in the future of our people. Every yen and every peso will be made to work harder and go farther. We will meet your trust with transparency, predictability, and delivery,” Recto said.

Among the big-ticket projects in the pipeline for Japanese financing

for JFY 2025 to 2026 is the 2.611-kilometer Second San Juanico Bridge Construction Project, which will connect the Leyte and Samar Islands via the municipalities of Babatngon and Sta. Rita. This will cut travel time, lower transport costs and open new economic opportunities for local businesses and workers in the Visayas region.

Meanwhile, the Parañaque Spillway Construction Project is designed to protect thousands of families in the Laguna Lakeshore areas by reducing flood inundation by up to 37 percent during extreme weather events.

Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV), a portfolio manager of the Aboitiz Group and a 40-percent shareholder in Coca-Cola Europacific Aboitiz Philippines (CCEAP), welcomes the groundbreaking of CCEAP’s state-of-the-art, 42-hectare manufacturing plant at TARI Estate in Tarlac City. lions of customers every single day, supporting the Philippines’ growth, and creating meaningful job opportunities for Filipino talent. We are eager to continue working hand in hand with TARI Estate, as we support the local government of Tarlac and its people and economy,” McGeown said.

The project marks one of the largest single-locator commitments to date at TARI Estate, which is being developed by Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates, another AEV business unit. The new manufacturing plant is also envisioned to be the largest CCEAP facility in the country.

MWSS approves higher Q4 rates for Maynilad, lower costs for Manila Water

STATE-RUN Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said Friday it approved water rate adjustments for the fourth quarter of 2025, with Maynilad customers facing a slight increase, while Manila Water consumers will see a rollback. The adjustments, effective Oct. 1, are based on the Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment (FCDA).

West zone customers of Maynilad will face an increase of P0.14 per cubic meter, while East Zone Manila Water customers will get a P0.15-percubic-meter reduction.

Maynilad consumers using 10 cubic meters (cu. m.) or less per month will see their bills rise by P0.40, from P181.60 to P182.00. Customers consuming 20 cu. m. will pay P1.53 more, with their bill increasing from P682.72 to P684.25. Those using 30 cu. m. will see an

additional P3.13 on their bill, which will rise from P1,394.81 to P1,397.94.

For Manila Water customers, a household using 10 cu. m. will save P0.64, with bills decreasing from P254.49 to P253.85.

Those consuming 20 cu. m. will pay P1.43 less, from P562.72 to P561.29, while 30 cu. m. users will see a P2.91 cut, from P1,147.21 to P1,144.29.

MWSS chief regulator Patrick Lester Ty said in a briefing Friday

the FCDA is reviewed quarterly to account for the peso’s movement against foreign currencies, which impacts payments on foreigndenominated loans used to finance water and wastewater projects.

For the October to December period, Maynilad’s FCDA was set at -P0.19 per cu. m., equivalent to -0.36-percent of its average basic charge of P51.40. Manila Water’s was set at P0.38 per cu. m., or 0.80 percent of its P47.10 basic charge.

DOTr, Sumitomo sign two-year extension of MRT-3 maintenance, rehabilitation deal

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has extended its rehabilitation and maintenance agreement for the MRT-3 rail line with Japanese firm Sumitomo Corp., the department announced Friday.

The two-year extension aims to ensure the “efficient and sustainable operations” of the rail line, a statement from the DOTr said.

The move follows a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to provide a safe and reliable rail system for the public. The deal, signed by DOTr acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Sumitomo Corp. corporate officer and general manager Takeshi Noguchi, covers essential system upgrades, repairs and operational reliability

for the MRT-3. The extension will ensure commuters have efficient and convenient rail services, with fewer breakdowns and shorter travel times.

Lopez lauded Sumitomo’s “undeniable capability” and expertise, noting the company completed the initial systems rehabilitation for the MRT-3 in December 2021 and has provided continuous maintenance services since.

“With Sumitomo, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Government of Japan by our side, we look forward to ensuring that MRT-3 continues to provide safe, reliable, and efficient service to our Filipino commuters,” Lopez said. Darwin G. Amojelar

Apple unveils iPhone 17 Air amid AI race, tari pressures

SAN FRANCISCO—

Apple unveiled its iPhone 17 lineup on Tuesday, featuring its thinnest smartphone ever, as the tech giant works to prove it can keep pace in the generative AI race.

The Silicon Valley powerhouse held its annual iPhone release event amid mounting pressures: the White House is pushing the company to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing, while investors question whether Apple is truly ready for the AI age.

Adding to these challenges, the company faces headwinds from President Donald Trump’s high tariff policies. Apple shares have dropped more than three percent since the Republican took office in January. Against this backdrop, Apple is betting on a product that it hopes will spark a super-cycle of iPhone purchases and reverse the trend of customers holding onto their devices longer before upgrading.

“The event shows Apple sidestepping the heart of the AI arms race while positioning itself as a long-term innovator on the AI hardware front, with silicon and device-level integration,” said Emarketer analyst Gadjo Sevilla.

To reinvigorate its brand, Apple introduced the iPhone 17 Air, which CEO Tim Cook called “a total game changer.”

At just 5.6mm thick (less than a quarter inch), the $999 device features Apple’s new A19 Pro processor -- its most powerful iPhone chip to date -- and promises all-day battery life with up to 40 hours of video playback.

The Air joins Apple’s more standard lineup, including the premium iPhone Pro 17, the company’s most expensive and highest-performing model.

While all new devices incorporate generative AI technology, Apple made no major announcements about expanding its AI capabilities beyond updates to existing features in its “Apple Intelligence” suite.

The company’s AI push has struggled to gain traction since it launched “Apple Intelligence” late last year. Users have been particularly disappointed with improvements to

Siri, which remains surprisingly basic despite years of promises.

Apple reportedly plans to integrate AI into online search next year and overhaul Siri, though the company hasn’t confirmed these reports.

The tech giant is also said to be partnering with Google to tap into its search and AI expertise.

“To truly differentiate and smoke the competition, Apple will have to crack AI as a new contextual user-interface” on its devices, Forrester analyst Thomas Husson said in a note.

“Executing such an ambitious AI strategy will take time. It won’t happen at best until next year, if not for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary” in 2027, he added.

Pivot to Air

Industry analysts see the iPhone Air as a strategic pivot, with Apple positioning ultra-thin design -- rather than larger screens -- as its new premium selling point.

The super-slim profile could also pave the way for Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone, ex-

pected as early as next year. Samsung and China’s Huawei already offer foldable smartphones.

However, engineering such thin devices presents challenges: higher production costs and reduced battery space, though Apple claims 24-hour battery life for the iPhone 17 Air when fully charged.

Despite tariffs that increase production costs, Apple kept iPhone prices unchanged from last year’s equivalent models -- a move that may squeeze profit margins.

Cook revealed in July that Trump’s tariffs cost Apple $800 million last quarter, with an estimated $1.1 billion impact expected this quarter.

Apple shares fell 1.40 percent after pricing details were announced, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s ability to maintain its profit margins.

Apple also introduced the AirPods Pro 3, featuring enhanced noise cancellation and real-time translation capabilities, along with the Apple Watch Series 11, which includes 5G connectivity, extended battery life, and heart health monitoring features pending regulatory approval.

Two eras, one stage

Jaya’s comeback concert marks legacy as daughter Sabriya debuts on stage

JAYA , the Philippines’ Queen of Soul, returns to Manila with a concert that looks both ways—honoring the journey she built over 45 years while welcoming her daughter Sabriya Gotidoc into her own.

On Sept. 8, the singer faced the local press for the first time since returning from the United States, which has been her home for years.

She spoke about Jaya All Hits Sept. 14 at the New Frontier Theater.

“This is memorable for us because my daughter is with me. I’m sharing her journey, and she’s sharing mine. Jaya All Hits and nostalgic. There’s so much I want to share. That is going to be the night,” Jaya said.

Sabriya admitted that being introduced as Jaya’s daughter comes with pressure, but she insisted on standing on her own.

“It gets to me sometimes when people expect me to be like my mom,” she said. “But I’m different, she’s different. At the end of the day, we’re all different. I write my own songs, I perform in my own way.”

Their bond goes beyond sharing the stage, showing two artists shaped by different times.

Jaya recalled the grind of the ’80s and ’90s, when music careers were built on cassette tapes, radio play, and endless live gigs.

“We didn’t have social media back then. We only had cassettes, and we recorded songs off the radio. You had to stay focused or else you’d go hungry,” she said.

“Now, they know how to

an advantage, but I always remind them to also learn the Filipino and Tagalog classics.”

For Sabriya, the path to music wasn’t always clear. She once planned to go to college and pursue her love for architecture, graphic design, and drawing.

“I was really planning to go to college. I wanted to focus on my studies and was so interested in architecture, graphic design, and drawing. I was ready to do that, but then one night over dinner I suddenly told my mom, ‘I’ll just go.’ It was super random,” she recalled. That moment shifted her focus, and soon after, she realized music was where her heart truly belonged.

Michael V. has once again

set social media abuzz after unveiling his latest parody on GMA Network’s Bubble , where he plays “Ciala Dismaya,” a character inspired by a controversial public figure.

The sketch, teased on Sept. 8, quickly went viral even before his face was revealed.

Nagulat ako dahil nakatalikod pa lang, ‘di pa nga nila nakikita ‘yung mukha, na-excite na agad ‘yung mga tao

Michael V., known as Bitoy, said.

The comedian admitted he had noticed the resemblance himself while watching a Ako mismo napansin ko na.

Parang kamukha ko siya. Parang konting effort na lang magagaya ko na siya

According to Bitoy, he initially held back from imitating the figure but gave in after receiving a flood of messages from fans. He later pitched the idea to the show’s creative team, who had the same parody in mind.

Michael V. stressed that the skit aims to deliver humor without malice.

Kung ano ‘yung issue na tinackle namin. Pero as usual with the Bubble Gang kailangan ilihis mo ng konti at

The spoof airs tomorrow night, Sept. 14, at Bubble Gan g, with Bitoy promising, babaha ng katatawanan

“I was ready to do that, but then I realized I really wanted to get my music out there. I have so much I want to share with people. I write all my material and I produce everything. I really wanted to start here in the Philippines,” she said.

The upcoming show, directed by John and produced by Cornerstone Concerts, will feature Jaya’s greatest hits with special guests Ogie Alcasid, and Jason Dy

As the mother-and-daughter duo prepares for the New Frontier stage, Jaya said she feels content and grateful for the long road that brought her here.

“It’s going to be a fun evening.

Hopefully, as much as I’m blessed with this show, you’ll be blessed with what you’re going to hear,” she said.

“After this, let’s take a look, and let’s see what’s next.”

James Reid feels truly ‘Blessed’ with new love-filled single

JAMES Reid has released his latest single, “Blessed,” a tender mix of R&B, gospel harmonies, and indie influences that he describes as a celebration of love and gratitude. Out Friday on major streaming platforms, the track mixes English and Tagalog lyrics as Reid sings about finding a once-in-a-lifetime connection. One line goes, “ Sa walong bilyong tao sa’ting mundo, nag-iisa ang isang tulad mo.” The song carries a warm and organic sound, built on a mid-tempo R&B groove with gospelinspired layers. Reid’s vocals, soft and earnest, drive home the track’s intimate and romantic tone.

The actor-singer said “Blessed” was born out of realizing how rare true love can be. The release follows his recent string of projects that highlight his evolution as one of the Philippines’ most versatile performers. Reid’s team said the single is more than a love song, calling it a reminder of gratitude, faith, and human connection.

Max’s celebrates 40-year partnership with SM malls

WHAT started as a single restaurant space offered in the mid-1980s has grown into a 40-year partnership between Max’s Restaurant and SM malls. Today, it serves Filipino comfort food to families across the country.

Ardee delos Angeles

ALONG the cool, misty highlands of Tagaytay, known for its iconic views and bustling culinary scene, lies an oasis of serene Japanese tradition: Aozora Japanese Restaurant. More than just a dining establishment, Aozora is a passion project, a dream realized by its owner, Christine Villongco, a dynamic business leader whose acumen spans the worlds of global retail and intimate hospitality.

In 1985, Henry Sy Sr. founder of SM and a loyal Max’s customer, offered the last available spot at the soonto-open SM North EDSA to Plaridel Fuentebella , son-inlaw of Max’s co-founder Ruby Trota . It was the first time the brand—then known for its freestanding restaurants— entered a mall setting.

From fast fashion to authentic flavors:

Christine Villongco’s culinary love letter to Tagaytay

While many know her as the formidable country manager of the Inditex Group Franchise Philippines, steering the helm of global fashion giants like Zara, Bershka, and Massimo Dutti, Villongco’s heart finds a different kind of fulfillment amidst the minimalist décor and warm, inviting ambiance of her restaurant.

Aozora, which translates to “blue sky,” perfectly captures the feeling it aims to evoke: a clear, peaceful, and uplifting experience for every guest.

“I’ve always connected a blue sky with peace and contentment. When you stare at a blue sky, you somehow feel recharged and renewed. It calms your senses. Tagaytay, on a clear day, is the perfect location to stare at a blue sky! In fact, to me, it’s synonymous with the calm, rest, and renewal that a blue sky gives. So the Japanese word Aozora was perfect for a place in Tagaytay,”

defined her successful career.

Aozora was originally established by Christine’s husband, Jess Villongco, and his close associates as a passion project. A serial entrepreneur with a deep-seated drive for innovation, Mr. Villongco founded the venture out of a genuine passion for creation and business building. The choice of Tagaytay for the inaugural location was a personal one, reflecting the Villongco family’s profound affinity for the area, where they maintain a private residence.

What began as a dedicated hobby has since flourished into a significant enterprise. From its single, original location, Aozora has successfully expanded its presence to seven branches, a testament to its resonant concept and sound business fundamentals.

“It was the first time we entered that format,” said Sharon T. Fuentebella , chairperson of Max’s Group Inc. “It brought us closer to our customers at a time when malls were just starting to change the Philippine retail landscape.”

The gamble paid off. SM North EDSA became a success for both brands, paving the way for Max’s to follow SM into its subsequent mall developments. Today, Max’s has 40 branches in SM malls, including its newest location in SM City Laoag.

“When they grow, we grow,”

said. “It’s always been a natural partnership—SM brings communities together, and Max’s provides a place for families to gather over Filipino comfort food.”

The collaboration has evolved with the times. Max’s has refreshed its store design with modern layouts, partnered with Yardstick Coffee in SM Southmall, and introduced al fresco setups and flexible dining spaces.

From one shared space in Quezon City to a nationwide presence, the partnership has become a fixture of Filipino family life. Both brands say they remain committed to creating spaces where families and friends can keep making memories for years to come.

Japanese Restaurant in Tagaytay

shares Villongco.

With a career spanning over two decades, Villongco has dedicated herself to leading and scaling businesses within the retail sector. This has held true across all her professional engagements, including her current role with Inditex, where her focus remains consistently on developing and strengthening the organization.

Villongco has consistently demonstrated a deep sense of ownership for every unit she has managed, approaching each business challenge with unwavering fervor and dedication. It is this mindset that shapes Villongco’s strategic approach to Aozora. She views it not as a departure from her expertise but as the next in a long line of businesses poised for growth. While the operational specifics may differ from the fashion industry, Villongco recognizes that the core elements of business are fundamentally similar. She believes in applying a universal business logic to any venture, which is why the shift in industry is not a barrier but an opportunity to apply the proven skills and methodologies that have

“To deliver authentic Japanese cuisine, we brought a Japanese chef into the team. He worked with us to develop the menu, localize the taste of the dishes, and even identify the best sources for certain ingredients. He also continues to develop new dishes for us and with us,” Villongco said.

At the same time, he helped train our local team on the must-do practices of a Japanese kitchen and how to handle the raw materials and equipment that produce authentic Japanese dishes. The training of our local team is continuous, of course, and they are subject to random standard checks to ensure that they are applying their training correctly,” she added.

Aozora Japanese Restaurant stands as a beautiful contradiction: it is both a sophisticated culinary venture and a humble labor of love. Christine Villongco has successfully channeled her corporate expertise into creating a destination that offers genuine escape and culinary delight.

It proves that passion, when paired with precision and a clear vision, can create something truly remarkable.

So, the next time you find yourself in Tagaytay looking for a taste of authentic Japan under a “blue sky,” you know where to find it—a serene haven crafted by a leader who knows exactly how to build an unforgettable experience.
