Bed-ridden Rody? Fake, manipulated photo, says VP

A BED-RIDDEN former President Rodrigo Duterte? Fake news, according to his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.

The Vice President, who is in The Hague to visit the Duterte patriarch at the detention center of the International Criminal Court, said he was healthier even if he lost weight. She dismissed a photo shared online allegedly showing the detained leader bedridden in a hospital.

“Someone sent me a photo that appeared to show former

President Rodrigo Duterte in a hospital bed with two wristbands. That photo is not real. It was likely edited with my father’s face superimposed,” the Vice President said.

“He is not in the hospital section of the detention unit. He is in the regular wing. And earlier today, he was walking on his own with a cane. He’s not suffering from any illness that would render him bedridden,” she added.

The Vice President acknowledged that her father significantly lost weight.

‘Totoy’ to file cases vs. Ang, 15 cops

W2 more sacks of bones recovered from Taal Lake

HISTLEBLOWER Julie “Dondon”

Patidongan said he will file a case against gaming tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang and 15 police officers whom he accused of being involved in the case of the missing “sabungeros.”

As this developed, two more sacks containing what are believed to be human bones were retrieved by technical divers of the Philippine Coast Guard on Saturday during the ongoing search for the remains of the disappeared “sabungeros” in Taal Lake.

Divers have since recovered five sacks from the lake. For his part, Patidongan, who previously went by the alias “Totoy,” said he will go to the National Police Commission tomorrow (Monday) to file a complaint against the 15 cops he accused of having a hand in the disappearance and killing of the cockfighting en thusiasts.

He also told dzBB that one of the police officers has a fishery at Taal Lake where the missing “sabungeros” were likely dumped.

“This police officer is active. He is likely at Camp Crame,” Patidongan said.

THE number of boats going out to harvest tilapia and milkfish have dwindled from 10 to only about two daily since news broke that the remains of some of the missing “sabungeros” were dumped in Taal Lake.

“They can’t go out to fish because orders have dwindled,” Mayor Lyndon Bruce of Laurel, Batangas told ABS-CBN News in an interview.

“Maybe it’s because people saw on social media that the missing ‘sabungeros’ are here,” Bruce added. Previously, daily harvest was at an average of 40 tons of fish.

The mayor said the daily average has since dropped to about eight tons.

ABS-CBN News reported there are about 1,700 fish pen operators in Laurel alone that are feeling the

pinch amid the ongoing retrieval operations for the remains of the disappeared “sabungeros.”

Earlier, Batangas governor Vilma Santos-Recto appealed to the public not to link Taal Lake to the case of missing “sabungeros.”

She said the issue has affected fishermen catching “tawilis” (Sardinella tawilis), an endemic species which is found only in the lake.

13 Pinoy seafarers remain missing—DMW

AT LEAST 13 Filipino seafarers from the ill-fated MV Eternity C remained unaccounted for, the Department of Migrant Workers said on Saturday.

DMW Undersecretary Bernard

Olalia said the 13 were among the 25 sailors – one Russian, 21 Filipinos, two Indians, and one Greek security personnel – on board the vessel when it was hit by a suspected Houthi drone attack off the coast of Yemen on July 7.

Three of the 25 sailors were confirmed dead, while six were reported abducted.

Olalia said the government has yet to verify the nationality of the fatalities and those held hostage.

To date, eight Filipino seafarers have been rescued from the vessel. “As for the eight, we are still working on their repatriation because they need to be brought first to a safe port and fix their exit and visas,” he said.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Filipino crew members of the MV Magic Seas – the second Filipino-carrying vessel attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea this month, were set to arrive at NAIA last night. Olalia said the 11 seafarers will receive full government support, including a safety net in the form of financial assistance worth P75,000 from the DMW’s AKSYON

PUP says veto of Nat’l Polytechnic University bill a setback to inclusive higher education

THE Polytechnic University of the Philippines expressed disappointment at the veto of the National Polytechnic University (NPU) Bill, saying it threatens its regional campuses and sets back inclusive public higher education.

In a statement, PUP called the veto a “rejection of the urgent call to expand access to quality, inclusive, and relevant public higher education.”

The bill, had it been signed into law, would have formally elevated PUP to national polytechnic univer-

sity status, ensuring P100 million in annual support for five years and greater institutional autonomy.

“This is not merely a legislative setback, it threatens the future of our university, our campuses, and the communities we serve,” the university said, noting that several of its regional campuses may face closure without national government funding.

PUP said the bill was not about prestige, but about addressing long-standing structural issues that have hindered the university’s growth and modernization.

Korean fugitive linked to P9b gambling ring arrested

A KOREAN fugitive who amassed over P9 billion from illegal online gambling operations in Korea and the Philippines was arrested by Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents in Malate, Manila.

The arrest of Lee Yong Jar was carried out on July 9 in coordination with Korean authorities and the Manila Police District Station 5 (MPD-PS5), at a building along Bocobo Street, Barangay 698, in Malate.

Lee is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and an active warrant of arrest issued by the Seoul Bukbu District Court in South Korea.

According to Korean authorities, Lee is a high-value illegal investor and operator of gambling platforms targeting Korean and Filipino users. Since 2022, he has launched multiple baccarat websites—including one named “Phoenix”—and used numerous bank accounts and livestream feeds from hotel casinos across Southeast Asia to run his operations.

Investigations revealed that Lee’s activities generated an estimated revenue of KRW 215 billion, or more than P9 billion. The Korean Embassy in Manila confirmed his fugitive status in an October 16, 2024 communication, citing him as a serious threat to public safety. BI records show that Lee has two derogatory entries: a Blacklist Order issued on January 16, 2025, and a Watchlist Order dated October 21, 2024, both on grounds of undesirability and fugitive status.

He is currently in the custody of the Ermita Police Station and also faces drug-related charges under Section 11 of Republic Act 9165. “We remain firm in our commitment to cleanse our borders of fugitives who use the Philippines as a safe haven. This is in line with the President’s call for strong law enforcement and intensified border protection under the Bagong Pilipinas agenda. Criminals will find no sanctuary here,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.

Resorts vow ethical, responsible gaming

SOLAIRE Resort, Newport World Resorts, and Okada Manila—three of the largest integrated resorts in the Philippines—have affirmed their commitment to responsible gaming and ethical online operations amid rising public concern over digital gambling platforms.

In a joint statement, the resorts emphasized that their online gaming platforms are regulated extensions of their core businesses, operating under strict oversight by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These platforms, they said, uphold the same high standards of integrity and transparency that govern their land-based operations.

The companies underscored full compliance with PAGCOR’s licensing and geographic restrictions, as well as anti-money laundering protocols. These include Know-Your-Customer procedures, player verification within 72 hours, and technologies that block access from outside the Philippines.

All games and systems used in online operations are certified by PAGCOR and tested for fairness through Random Number Generators. Promotional content also goes through strict review by PAGCOR and the Advertising Standards Council to ensure social responsibility and truthful communication.

The three resorts said they actively promote responsible gaming through deposit limits, self-exclusion tools, and mandatory age verification. Employees are licensed and regularly trained on compliance and responsible conduct, while all customer data

is protected under the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

In addition to regulatory compliance, the companies maintain their own internal safeguards, including regular audits, content reviews, and a dedicated system for resolving player concerns. These systems are designed to reinforce operational transparency and player protection.

The statement concluded with a renewed pledge to support national development through tax contributions, job creation, and donations to education, healthcare, and disaster relief. “Trust is earned through action,” the resorts said. “We are committed to building a safe and responsible gaming environment for all.”

VP Sara to respond to confidential fund issue during impeachment trial

VICE President Sara Duterte criticized Manila Rep. Joel Chua’s remark that the controversy over her confidential funds could have been avoided if she had provided explanations during congressional hearings.

She added that an intelligence expert would serve as a resource person during the impeachment proceedings. Chua earlier said it was good the vice president would finally address the issue but insisted she should have done so earlier.

Solon seeks support for P1k student aid

BATANGAS Rep. Leandro Leviste has urged fellow lawmakers in the incoming 20th Congress to back House Bill 27, which proposes a P1,000 monthly allowance for students in public schools. The proposed aid would cover students from kindergarten to college.

Leviste said the bill seeks to address basic educational needs such as food, transportation, and school supplies. While it has received support for tackling a critical issue, he acknowledged the challenge of securing funding amid competing national priorities.

“I don’t want to answer because they filed an impeachment case. And I said,‘Since you filed an impeachment, I will give my answers at the impeach- ment trial,’” Duterte told reporters after visiting her father, former Presi dent Rodrigo Duterte, in The

Duterte previously attended a House committee hearing in September 2024 but refused to take her oath, leading the panel to allow her to leave. She returned in November, took her oath, and was accompanied by personnel from the Office of the Vice President.

Last Friday, Leviste launched his initiative by distributing allowances to students in Nasugbu, Lian, Calatagan, Tuy, and Balayan using P150 million from his personal funds. The program benefitted 15,000 students in Batangas’ first district.

“I want to show that this initiative is doable and worthwhile,” Leviste said. “Spending on education is an investment in our future, and linking the allowance to school attendance ensures it directly helps the students.” Maricel V. Cruz

The Supreme Court has ordered the House of Representatives to submit details about the status of the first three impeachment complaints against Duterte, including their endorsement dates and how the House Secretary General handled their transmittal to the Speaker.

The high court also consolidated Duterte’s petition questioning the constitutionality of the fourth impeachment complaint with a separate petition filed by lawyer Israelito Torreon and others seeking to nullify the articles of impeachment.

Duterte is facing seven articles of impeachment, including allegations of threatening the First Couple and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. The charges include sedition, loss of public trust, and misuse of public funds. She was impeached by the House on February 5, and the articles were transmitted to the Senate the same day.

CAAP tightens rules amid fake license case

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has reiterated its strict licensing procedures following the arrest of a “delivery boy” allegedly involved in selling fake aviation licenses. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) presented the suspect to the media on Friday.

In a statement, CAAP emphasized that it uses a multilayered system to verify license applicants, which includes submission of academic credentials and certifications from CAAP-accredited institutions. For foreign training, the schools must first be validated by the agency.

Applicants are then assigned a unique Personnel License Number (PEL) upon passing the initial review. This number tracks their aviation history and serves as a tool to verify authenticity. Joel E. Zurbano

BARMM ink pactto hasten Marawi rehab

NATIONAL government agencies and the Bangsamoro government signed several agreements on Friday to accelerate rehabilitation in Marawi City. The signing took place at Camp Ranao and was attended by six Cabinet secretaries.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and BARMM signed a memorandum of agreement for the repair of the Access Bridge in Norsalam Village. Another deal between the DPWH, BARMM, and Department of Education covers school ancillary facility construction.

While in The Hague, Duterte was joined by former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who said she thanked Filipinos on Duterte Street and supporters online. Roque added that Duterte informed her father of recent events, including the deaths of three overseas Filipino workers aboard the MV Eternity C and updates on detained pastor Apollo Quiboloy. The vice president, who left Manila on July 6, is expected to remain in The Hague until July 23 and will skip the upcoming SONA to visit the Filipino community in South Korea.

A separate agreement was signed between the National Housing Authority and BARMM for the “Building Better Marawi – Livable and Accessible Marawi Housing” program. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources also partnered with BARMM to promote aquaculture development.

PH reaffirms resolve to defend WPS rights

THE Philippines on Saturday marked the ninth anniversary of its landmark legal victory over China in the South China Sea, vowing to continue asserting its maritime rights through peaceful and lawful means.

In separate statements, the National Maritime Council (NMC), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reaffirmed the country’s commitment to upholding the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), which invalidated China’s sweeping claims over nearly the entire South China Sea.

“The award is binding, final, and cannot be erased or diminished, and is beyond the reproach of politics,” the NMC said, calling the ruling an “undeniable part of the body of international law.”

As the country continues to face illegal and coercive actions in its waters, the NMC said the Philippines will assert its maritime rights “with clarity and resolve through a sustained presence, strategic communication, the promotion of international law,

16 senior PNP officials get new positions

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has reassigned 16 senior officers in a major reshuffle that includes key changes in its command group.

In an order issued by PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III on July 11, Lt. Gen. Edgar Allan Okubo was named Deputy Chief for Operations, the third-highest position in the PNP hierarchy. He replaces Lt. Gen. Robert Rodriguez, who is set to retire on July 15. Okubo previously served as the Chief of the Directorial Staff, the fourth-highest post in the PNP. Replacing Okubo as Chief of the Directorial Staff is Maj. Gen. Neri Ignacio, who formerly served as Director for Logistics.

capability-building, and stronger partnerships with like-minded nations.”

The DFA echoed the same commitment, calling the ruling “a cornerstone of Philippine maritime policy and the country’s unflinching advocacy for a rules-based order governed by international law.”

“The Filipino nation will always look to the enduring guidance of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea in asserting its rights and entitlements in its maritime domain,” the DFA said.

The department noted that the ruling has become part of international jurisprudence, having been cited in decisions by the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice. It described the award as an “illuminating precedent” for other nations facing similar

maritime challenges.

For his part, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. reaffirmed the military’s resolve to defend the West Philippine Sea.

“Nine years ago today, the world listened and sided with the truth. On July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration upheld the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the WPS,” Brawner said.

“This is more than a legal ruling but a recognition of what every Filipino has long held in their heart – that these waters, resources, and legacy – are rightfully ours.”

The PCA ruling, issued on July 12, 2016, declared China’s so-called “nine-dash line” — now expanded into a 10-dash line — as illegal under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

This demarcation covers a vast portion of the South China Sea, including areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Despite the ruling, China has continued to ignore the decision and assert its expansive claims.

US, Japan, Philippines strengthen trilateral economic, security ties

THE Philippines, the United States, and Japan are focused on developing their trilateral economic partnership to complement their growing security ties, the US State Department said Saturday.

The foreign ministers of the three countries – Philippine Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi – discussed the initiative and emphasized unlocking more private sector investments in their flagship Luzon Economic Corridor during a meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related foreign ministers’ meetings in Malaysia on July 10, the

department said in a statement.

Rubio highlighted the Philippines’ wealth in critical minerals and stressed the need to diversify global supply chains for these resources. The three officials also proposed expanding trilateral cooperation in areas such as cyber security, energy (including civil nuclear energy), and investments in reliable and secure telecommunications networks.

They agreed to hold sectoral trilateral discussions at the senior officials’ level in the coming months to advance their shared vision for peace and security in the region.

During the same meeting, the officials reaffirmed their support

for a free and open Indo-Pacific and pledged to coordinate efforts on maritime security through joint maritime activities, military exercises, and capacity-building programs for the Philippine Coast Guard and other maritime authorities.

Lazaro underscored the Philippines’ commitment to its alliance with both countries, describing the US and Japan as “indispensable partners” in enhancing the country’s defense and security capabilities.

She also expressed appreciation for their support on the South China Sea issue and the United States’ continuing commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty.

MTRCB gives “G” rating to docu-film on officer

THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has given a “G” or General Audience rating to the trailer of the upcoming docu-drama Sa Likod Ng Tsapa (Behind the Badge), allowing it to be screened in cinemas to viewers of all ages. The trailer chronicles the story of Police Colonel Hansel Marantan, a bemedalled officer known for his service in Luzon and now stationed in Davao.

The film’s all-Davao production team, led by producer-director Editha Z. Caduaya, welcomed the approval, calling it a major boost for regional filmmakers.

“This rating means Col. Marantan’s story can reach everyone — young and old — across the country,” Caduaya said.

The film is a dramatized depiction of Col. Marantan’s experiences with betrayal, injustice, and redemption, and explores the internal struggles faced by law enforcers. It also sheds light on broader themes such as political interference and personal sacrifice in public service.

4 Indian Navy ships set to visit Manila

FOUR Indian Navy vessels are scheduled to make a port call in the Philippines this July, in a move aimed at deepening maritime and defense cooperation between the two countries, Indian Ambassador Shri Harsh Kumar Jain said Friday. The visit is part of India’s bilateral defense engagement with the Philippines.

Speaking at the Stratbase ADRI forum in Makati City, Jain said the ships’arrival will coincide with joint activities between the Indian and Philippine navies. These include maritime cooperation efforts, military exchanges, and capacity building.

“India and the Philippines share common interests in maritime security and the promotion of a free, open, and rules-based IndoPacific,” Jain said. He added that both countries are strong advocates of international maritime law and freedom of navigation. Rex Espiritu

DPWH completes P340m Bicol flood control projects

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed three major flood control projects worth P340.45 million across Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and Masbate. The infrastructure aims to protect low-lying and coastal communities from severe flooding.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the projects were completed earlier this year and will benefit residents in Barangay Tabuco in Naga City, Barangay Bitan-o in Sorsogon City, and Barangays San Antonio and Diotay in Balud, Masbate. The projects are expected to reduce flooding during typhoons and heavy rainfall.

DPWH Region V Director Virgilio Eduarte said the Naga City project includes a 1.08-kilometer flood mitigation structure with steel sheet piles, rock embankments, and slope protection. It will safeguard the riverbank communities along the Tabuco River. Vito Barcelo

UN: Hundreds killed in recent weeks while seeking aid in Gaza

JERUSALEM – Ten

Palestinians were reported killed Friday while waiting for rations in Gaza, adding to nearly 800 similar deaths in the last six weeks, according to the UN, with Israel’s army saying it issued new instructions to troops following repeated reports of

Israel’s fatalities.

Friday’s reported violence came as negotiators from Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas were locked in indirect talks in Qatar to try to agree on a temporary ceasefire in the more than 21-month conflict.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday he hoped a deal for a 60-day pause in the war could be struck in the coming days, and that he would then be ready to negotiate a more permanent end to hostilities. Hamas has said the free flow of aid is a main sticking point in the talks, with Gaza’s more than two million residents facing a dire humanitarian crisis of hunger and disease amid the grinding conflict.

Israel began easing a more than two-month total blockade of aid in late May. Since then, a new US- and Israel-backed organization called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has effectively sidelined the territory’s vast UN-led aid delivery

network.

There are frequent reports of Israeli forces firing on people seeking aid, with Gaza’s civil defense agency saying 10 Palestinians were killed Friday while waiting at a distribution point near the southern city of Rafah.

In the plea agreement, Guzman Lopez said he coordinated the smuggling of vast quantities of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and other drugs and precursor chemicals from Mexico to the United States.

One of his brothers, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was arrested last year after arriving in the United States in a private plane with Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who claimed that he had been kidnapped. Both men are awaiting trial. The arrests sparked

Pope Leo’s Illinois childhood home to become tourist site

WASHINGTON – Pope Leo XIV’s childhood home has been sold to the village where he grew up, which intends to make it a historical site, local media reported Friday.

The modest brick home in the Chicago suburb of Dolton, population 21,000, was sold by its current owner for $375,000, WGN television said.

It said the owner had bought the house for $66,000 last year – prior to Pope Leo’s election as the first American pontiff – and done extensive renovations.

The Dolton village board of trustees voted earlier this month to purchase the three-bedroom house and turn it into an attraction open to the public.

According to WBEZ Chicago radio, the parents of Pope Leo – born Robert Prevost – bought the house in 1949 and sold it in 1996. AFP

Belgium returns 2,000-year-old wooden sarcophagus to Egypt

BRUSSELS – Belgian authorities on Friday said they had handed over a roughly 2,000-year-old sarcophagus to Egypt, a decade after it was seized by police in Brussels.

Prosecutors said the artefact – along with a piece of an ancient wooden beard – was presented to the Egyptian ambassador at a ceremony in the Belgian capital.

“After 10 years of investigation and proceedings, it is a true act of justice to return to its country of origin an item that was misappropriated from its heritage,” said Julien Moinil, the Brussels public prosecutor.

The artefacts were seized by Belgian police in 2015 after Interpol issued a notice following a request from a court in Egypt, prosecutors said. They were housed in the meantime at the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels.

A statement said that the wooden sarcophagus, which dates to the Ptolemaic period between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, “undoubtedly belonged to a member of Egyptian high society.”

“The choice of materials and the meticulous execution bear witness to exceptional craftsmanship,” it said. It added that hieroglyphics on the sarcophagus made it possible to identify the former occupant as a man called Pa-di-Hor-pa-khered and that he was portrayed as having transformed into Osiris, god of the underworld. INH DUONG, Vietnam—When you pick up a carton of milk, a ready-to-drink coffee, or a plant-based beverage, you probably don’t think much about the packaging. But behind that convenient, shelf-stable box is a whole ecosystem— not just of machines and materials, but of research, innovation, and close collaboration with brands.

Tetra Pak, the global packaging company behind many of those familiar cartons, is playing a quiet but significant role in how drinks are developed and delivered across Southeast Asia.

And as people’s preferences shift toward healthier choices, more convenience, and greater environmental responsibility, Tetra Pak is helping its partners keep up.

John Jose, a Filipino expatriate and the company’s marketing

manager for Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia, echoed this message during the inauguration of Tetra Pak’s second aseptic carton packaging material production line in Binh Duong, Vietnam, on July 3, 2025. “People often don’t realize how much goes into that simple carton. Each one reflects a combination of consumer insight, product innovation, and close collaboration with our partners to deliver better,

P&A GRANT Thornton marked a major milestone with the release of its inaugural sustainability report, underscoring its transformation from a compliance-focused firm to a purpose-driven leader in the professional services sector.

The report, unveiled on June 26, 2025, by chief sustainability officer Chris Ferareza during a special stakeholder event, reflects the firm’s deepening commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

“This report is more than a document. It is about transformation, a reflection of our journey and the values we choose to stand for,” Ferareza said.

P&A Grant Thornton’s sustainability journey began years ago but was formally launched in early 2022, marking a pivotal shift in how the firm defines its purpose. This shift involved reimagining its role, not merely as auditors and advisors, but as architects of a more resilient and inclusive future.

Recognizing that true impact

smarter beverage choices,” he said.

Milestone in Binh Duong

The €97-million expansion more than doubles the plant’s production capacity and adds 15 new packaging formats. It’s a major step forward for Tetra Pak’s presence in Asia Pacific— and a signal of confidence in the region’s growth.

Tetra Pak president and CEO Adolfo Orive emphasized that the expansion was not solely about boosting production volume, but about enabling innovation. He noted that the company is supporting food producers in meeting the evolving demands of modern consumers through new, sustainable packaging solutions designed to deliver both convenience and innovation.

Orive emphasized that the Binh Duong facility is now one of the most advanced in the region, serving Southeast Asian markets including the Philippines.

The packaging giant noted that one of the trending discussions shaping the industry is the growing demand for healthier beverages. Whether driven by sugar taxes, health awareness, or lifestyle shifts, consumers across the region are making more conscious choices.

“We’re seeing a move toward lower-sugar drinks, dairy alternatives, and functional beverages. We help brands navigate that shift by understanding what their consumers want and matching that with the right packaging solutions,” Jose said.

Tetra Pak uses a wealth of data - from global consumer panels to localized studies - to create what Jose calls “opportunity platforms.” These platforms distill insights into actionable ideas for brands to explore.

Concept to carton

When a new idea emerges, it often needs testing, and Tetra Pak has created the right spaces for that. In Thailand, for example, the company recently opened a Customer Innovation Center and will soon launch a Product Development Center for small-batch trials and UHT product testing.

“There’s a full ecosystem,” Jose explained. “We can brainstorm with brands, run formulation trials, and

extends beyond internal efforts, the firm launched a dedicated sustainability services practice to help clients navigate the evolving ESG landscape, manage climate risks, comply with regulations, and meet stakeholder expectations.

Ferareza noted that the release of the report came at a time when sustainability is no longer optional. Across the globe, businesses face mounting pressure to demonstrate their ESG performance - not just to regulators, but to investors, employees, and the communities they serve.

As a trusted advisor, P&A Grant Thornton is uniquely positioned to drive change, not only through its own practices but by helping shape the strategies of its clients.

Moving forward, the firm intends to expand its sustainability initiatives, strengthen advisory capabilities, and engage stakeholders through ongoing dialogue. Future reports will track progress, highlight key insights, and uphold the firm’s accountability to its commitments.

even produce early batches through our co-packer network. It’s a one-stop shop for innovation.”

In the Philippines, while a development facility isn’t planned for now, Tetra Pak’s Manila office offers space for ideation sessions. Brands are also regularly flown to Thailand or Vietnam for handson collaboration.

Brands of all sizes

Tetra Pak’s customer list in the Philippines includes household names such as Nestlé, Magnolia, RFM, Selecta, San Miguel, among other.

But the company also supports MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises), mainly through partnerships with copackers, which are third-party facilities that produce beverages on behalf of smaller brands.

“Even well-known companies use co-packers when they want to try something new. It allows them to explore without committing to a large investment upfront,” Jose said. He cited a recent launch of a one-liter coconut milk product endorsed by actress Nadine Lustre as an example of an MSME-friendly rollout through a local co-packer.

On and off the clock

For Jose, life outside the corporate fences is quieter, but no less creative. A graduate of De La Salle University’s marketing program in 1994, Jose joined Tetra Pak in 1996. Nearly three decades later, he now heads marketing for Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

His career has taken him from Manila to Sweden, Malaysia, and now Jakarta, where he lives with his family. Along the way, he’s helped beverage brands across Southeast Asia adapt to shifting consumer tastes.

Lately, that includes a strong push into ready-to-drink coffee and tea categories he describes as “underdeveloped” but full of potential.

Professional services provider charts new course with inaugural sustainability report

Still, it’s not all strategy decks and market insights. Since relocating to Jakarta, the 51-year-old Filipino expat has taken up the piano,

chords through YouTube tutorials during the pandemic. What began as a creative outlet has become a genuine hobby, with two original compositions under his belt.

“I even wrote a song about coffee and tea,” he said. “Those are growing categories for us, and I figured - why not make music out of it too?”

The idea came after an innovation workshop in Malaysia. That same evening, a melody started to form. These days, between work and chess matches with his son, Jose finds joy in his home studio, where he’s been exploring hi-fi audio systems and dreaming of recording his coffee-and-tea tune.

BYD cars Philippines and Grab Philippines team up for greener mobility

BYD Cars Philippines has partnered with Grab Philippines to launch the inaugural BYD Grab Day Caravan. The initial event, held last June at the BYD Global City dealership, marked the beginning of an initiative to integrate BYD’s advanced electric and hybrid vehicles into Grab’s fleet, allowing commuters to experience eco-friendly transportation firsthand. This collaboration aims to expand the accessibility of electric and hybrid vehicles nationwide. GrabCar driver-partners

utilizing BYD’s New Energy Vehicles can realize up to 40% in operational and maintenance cost savings compared to traditional combustion engine cars, leading to increased earnings per trip.

Bob Palanca, Managing Director of BYD Cars Philippines, emphasized that the partnership reflects a commitment to building a cleaner, more efficient transport ecosystem that addresses realworld needs. Central to the program is the BYD Seal 5 DM-i Dynamic, a fuel-efficient sedan built on BYD’s Super DM-i platform. This vehicle is well-suited for daily ridehailing, offering an electric-only range of up to 50 km and a combined range of up to 1,175 km. Its spacious interior, low operating costs, and annual preventive maintenance schedule make it an attractive option for Transport Network Vehicle Service operators. The caravan provided GrabCar driverpartners with opportunities to test drive the Seal 5 DM-i Dynamic, explore its features, and access exclusive financing offers. Ronald Roda, Grab Philippines Managing Director, highlighted the partnership’s benefit to both the riding public and driver-partners, fostering increased earnings and promoting sustainable mobility. Following its successful launch, the BYD Grab Day Caravan is slated for a nationwide rollout across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in the third quarter of the year.

GWM Cannon boasts affordability as pickup prices set to rise with new tax imposition

FOR consumers eyeing a new pickup truck, swift action is advised as higher taxes are being re-imposed on the segment. The Capital Market Efficiency Promotion Act (CMEPA), Republic Act No. 12214, which took effect on July 1, has amended the National Internal Revenue Code. This change removes pickup trucks from the list of vehicles exempt from excise tax, which can reach up to 50 percent depending on the net selling price.

Under the previous administration’s Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law, signed in 2018, pickup trucks enjoyed tax exemption due to their perceived crucial role in facilitating small businesses’ transport of goods. However, the current Department of Finance spearheaded the reintroduction of the excise tax, positing that most pickup buyers now use these vehicles primarily for personal mobility and lifestyle purposes rather than for transporting goods.

While some manufacturers have already announced price increases ranging from PHP 100,000 to PHP 280,000, several brands are holding onto their former prices until current stocks are depleted.

Among these is Great Wall Motor (GWM), led by Ruben Tan. During a recent GWM Track Day for “The New Cannon Experience” at the R33 Drift Track in San Simon, Pampanga, Tan confirmed that GWM

is maintaining the prices of its Cannon models. The Cannon LUX 4x4 9AT remains at PHP 1,348,000,

PH Kyokushin karate team conquers Jakarta mats

FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Chloe Jane Pascua made her international debut memorable as she helped power a 25-member Philippine-based club team to a 28-medal haul at the Ikigai Kyokushin Warrior 2 full-contact karatedo competition and seminar held recently in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The delegation, composed of athletes from IKO Nakamura Philippines, raked in an impressive 12 gold, 14 silver, and 2 bronze medals in the multi-nation event that drew participants from Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Malaysia.

Pascua, who hails from Pasay City and also practices arnis, captured two gold medals — one in the 13–15-year-old female kata division, and another in the 14–15-year-old intermediate lightweight (under 45kg) kumite category.

“Nakakakaba po noong una, pero naalala ko lagi ang sinasabi ng papa ko. Pinanalo ko po ito para sa Pilipinas at sa mga magulang kong walang sawang sumusuporta sa akin. Gusto ko rin pong ipakita ang aking kakayahan,” shared Pascua, re ecting on her emotional win.

Under the guidance of head coach Sensei Victor Canon, Pascua and her teammate from Parañaque City, Ralph Sinangote, emerged as two of the most bemedalled Filipino athletes

in the three-day competition. Sinangote bagged three medals — a gold in the 15–17 y/o open kumite F category, and two silvers in weapons kata and the 17–40 y/o kata division.

“Hindi lang husay ang ipinakita ng team na ito, kundi pati na rin ang tunay na karakter at pagkakaisa,” said the 60-yearold Canon. “This is a proud moment for the entire Kyokushin community in the Philippines.” Canon, who also won a kata all-stars medal, commended the team’s dedication, noting that their participation was made possible through private sponsorships.

Also making a strong impression was 12-year-old Jaq Raphael Legaspi from Bacoor, Cavite, who clinched two golds in the 13–15 y/o kata and Pinan 3 kata open events.

Other gold medalists include Tobias Gabriel R. Oleta, who won in the male kumite 9–11 y/o (Open E); Mikko Uba, in male kumite 12–14 y/o (Open F); John Angelo L. Abuton, in male kumite 12–14 y/o under

45kg (Open E); and Austin Ray T. Saliao, who topped the 7–9 y/o kata (Open C). Merin Luijie L. Cabradilla bagged gold in the 13–15 y/o kata (Open D), while John Venz J. Bacuna dominated the male kumite 15–17 y/o (Open J).

Silver medalists were equally impressive. Isaiah Cassiel R. Oleta earned silver in the male kumite 9–11 y/o (Open G), while Amelia G. Ravindran took second place in the female kumite 16–17 y/o advanced open weight group. Virgil Armand G. Dahilan added a silver from the male kumite 30–40 y/o (Open A) category.

Isabelle O. Arias placed second in the female kata 16–18 y/o division, while Vicente Socrates R. Arias III secured silver in the 18–52 y/o kata (Open A). Austin Ray T. Saliao added a silver in the male kumite 6–8 y/o (Open D), and Elijah Gabriel L. Espinosa bagged two silvers in the 7–9 y/o kata A and the 9–11 y/o under 30kg male kumite (F).

With their spirited performances, the Filipino karatekas showcased not only their skills but also the discipline, unity, and ghting spirit that de ne the country’s growing Kyokushin community on the global stage.

Vermosa Green Run 2025 unites runners, dog lovers, and eco advocates

NOT even rain and ashes of lightning could stop nearly 2,500 runners and 350 dogs from taking part in the fourth edition of the Vermosa Green Run, held on Sunday, June 29, at the scenic Vermosa Estates in Imus, Cavite.

Launched in 2022, the multi-level, eco-themed run has grown into a wellloved annual tradition at the 750-hectare Ayala Land estate south of Metro Manila. This year’s event once again drew a diverse crowd of elite athletes, casual joggers, tness enthusiasts, and families to its various race categories: 21K half-marathon, 10K, 5K, and 3K. A perennial crowd favorite, the 1K Dog Run provided fur parents a joyful and active bonding experience with their pets, all set against the estate’s wellpaved roads and lush green backdrop. The inaugural Vermosa Green Run in 2022 encouraged the public to “go out, lace up, mask up, and run for a greener tomorrow,” rekindling people’s love for the outdoors after years of pandemic restrictions. Since then, the event has championed wellness, sustainability, and community building — a mission that remains at its core today.

Organized by Pinoy Fitness Inc., the Green Run continues to support meaningful causes. Proceeds from this year’s edition benefited

the Haribon Foundation’s Adopt-ASeedling Program, Pawssion Project (an animal welfare organization), and Takbo Kabitenyo, a local group that trains young athletes for national and international races. As part of the event’s green initiative, participants were also encouraged to bring used plastic materials, which will be repurposed into eco-friendly building materials such as benches and pathways. as “the most scenic run” in the South, the event also serves as a lifestyle statement for many. For Cavite local Angel Montevirgen, a member of Takbo Kabitenyo, the Green Run has become more than just a race.

“It’s a lifestyle that becomes a part of you. You look forward to it each year — for the tness, the gear, the friendships, and the joy of running. It’s also about the sense of community,” he shared.

Despite gloomy skies, Pinoy Fitness president Je Lo was pleasantly surprised by the massive turnout.

“Runners actually enjoy running in the rain — it’s cooler and more fun,” he said. “What makes Vermosa ideal is its safe and smooth roads, even when wet. It’s green, clean, and scenic — a refreshing change from urban runs. Here, runners can really enjoy the experience.”

But to Pacquiao, this isn’t just a chance at redemption. It’s also an opportunity to show that he still has what it takes to be at the same level against the beautiful sport’s new guard. And what better way to do that against the Argentine Barrios, who has won three of his last four ghts but wants to prove that he is indeed one of boxing’s elite even after his split decision draw against Abel Ramos last November. UNBEATEN bantamweight prospect Kenneth Llover is set to face the most notable opponent of his career when he takes on the former two-division champion Luis Concepcion of Panama on August 17 at Winford Resort and Casino in Manila. Holding a perfect professional record of 14-0 with 9 knockouts, Llover returns to home soil riding high on momentum after scoring back-to-back rst-round stoppages over Tulio Dekanarudo and Keita Kurihara in Japan. The highly impressive victories have propelled the 22-year-old standout from General Trias, Cavite, to No. 9 in The RING’s bantamweight rankings.

“I am excited to ght in front of my kababayans again. Luis Concepcion is a warrior; he is aggressive and experienced. I expect him to bring the ght. UNPACKING DOGS' LOVE FOR RAW VEGETABLES

DOGS, often celebrated for their carnivorous inclinations, sometimes surprise their owners with a peculiar preference: a love for raw vegetables. Why do some canines eagerly munch on carrots, celery, or broccoli, while others turn up their noses? The answer lies in a combination of factors, from nutritional benefits and textural appeal to behavioral influences and individual preferences.

Nutritional Perks of the Plant-Based Bite

Raw vegetables offer a wealth of nutrients that can contribute to a dog's overall health and well-being. As mentioned in the article, "Raw Vegetables: Can My Dog Eat Them?" by Palapets, vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These nutrients are essential for various bodily functions, including immune support, digestion, and maintaining healthy skin and coat.

Vitamins and Minerals: Vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A, crucial for vision and immune function. Leafy greens provide Vitamin K, important for blood clotting. Other vegetables offer a range of B vitamins and minerals like potassium and magnesium.

Fiber's Role: Fiber, abundant in many vegetables, aids in digestion. It helps regulate bowel movements, preventing both constipation

and diarrhea. Moreover, fiber can contribute to a feeling of fullness, which can be beneficial for dogs needing to manage their weight.

The Textural Temptation

Beyond the nutritional value, the physical properties of raw vegetables play a significant role in their appeal to dogs. The crunchy texture and high-water content can be particularly enticing.

The Crunch Factor: As described in "Why Do Dogs Like Vegetables?" by Nutrish, the satisfying crunch of raw vegetables provides a sensory experience that dogs often enjoy. Chewing on these items can also help with dental hygiene, as the abrasive action can help remove plaque.

Hydration Helpers: Many vegetables, such as cucumbers and celery, have a high water content. This can be a refreshing treat, especially on a hot day, and contributes to the dog's overall hydration.

Behavioral and Environmental Influences

A dog's preference for raw vegetables can also be shaped by its environment and learned behaviors.

Early Exposure: If a puppy is introduced to vegetables early in life, it is more likely to accept them as part of its diet. Positive experiences, such as receiving vegetables as treats, can further reinforce this preference.

Mimicry and Curiosity: Dogs are often keen observers of their human companions. If they see their owners enjoying vegetables, they may become curious and want to try them as well.

Boredom Busters: Raw vegetables can provide mental stimulation. The act of chewing can be a satisfying activity, especially for dogs who may be bored or under-stimulated.

Individual Preferences and Breed Variations

Just like humans, dogs have individual tastes and preferences. Some dogs may adore carrots, while others may prefer broccoli or green beans. Breed also plays a role, as some breeds may be more inclined to enjoy certain foods.

Taste and Smell: A dog's sense of smell is far more sensitive than a human's, and this influences its food preferences. Some dogs may be drawn to the sweetness of carrots, while others may prefer the milder taste of cucumbers.

Genetic Factors: Certain breeds may have a genetic predisposition towards certain food preferences.

Experimentation: It is often a matter of trial and error to discover which vegetables a dog enjoys.

Safe Vegetable Choices and Preparation Tips

While many raw vegetables are safe and beneficial for dogs, it is essential to choose the right ones and prepare them appropriately.

Safe Choices: Some vegetables that are generally safe for dogs include carrots, celery, cucumbers, green beans, broccoli (in moderation), and spinach.

Vegetables to Avoid: Some vegetables are toxic to dogs, such as onions, garlic, and chives. It is also important to avoid giving dogs large quantities of vegetables that can cause digestive upset.

Preparation: Wash vegetables thoroughly before offering them to your dog. Chop them into bite-sized pieces to prevent choking hazards. For some dogs, lightly steaming or cooking vegetables can make them easier to digest.

Integrating Vegetables into a Dog's Diet

Incorporating raw vegetables into a dog's diet can be a healthy and enjoyable addition.

As Treats: Raw vegetables can be used as healthy treats, especially for dogs who are overweight or prone to weight gain.

Meal Additions: Vegetables can be added to a dog's regular meals, either as a supplement to commercial dog food or as part of a homemade diet.

Consultation: It is always advisable to consult with a veterinarian before making significant changes to a dog's diet. A vet can provide guidance on appropriate vegetable choices and portion sizes based on the dog's individual needs.

The canine love for raw vegetables is a multifaceted phenomenon. The nutritional benefits, appealing textures, environmental influences, and individual preferences all play a role. By understanding these factors, dog owners can make informed decisions about incorporating raw vegetables into their pets' diets, contributing to their health, happiness, and overall well-being.

CAT BREEDS WITH LONG LIFESPANS

First of two parts

WHEN it comes to choosing a feline companion, many prospective cat owners consider not only the personality and appearance of the breed but also its lifespan. Certain cat breeds are known for their longevity, living well into their late teens or even early twenties.

The Importance of Lifespan in Cat Breeds

The lifespan of a cat can be influenced by several factors, including genetics, diet, environment, and healthcare. While the average lifespan of domestic cats typically ranges from 12 to 15 years, some breeds consistently exceed this average.

Notable Long-Living Cat Breeds

Several cat breeds are celebrated for their impressive lifespans.

Below are some of the most notable breeds known for their longevity:

1. Siamese

Siamese cats are not only known for their striking appearance but also for their sociable and playful nature. According to the article "What cat breeds live the longest?" by Stockton Vets, Siamese cats can live up to 15 years, with some individuals reaching 20 years.

2. Balinese

The Balinese breed is often referred to as the "longhaired Siamese." As mentioned in the article "How These 12 Cat Breeds Defy Time with Their Long Lifespans," Balinese cats have an average lifespan of 12 to 20 years.

3. Burmese

Burmese cats are known for their affectionate nature and striking coat colors. They typically live between 10 to 18 years, with many reaching their late teens.

5. Turkish Angora

The Turkish Angora is a lively and vocal breed that can easily match or surpass the average cat's lifespan. Some Turkish Angora cats have been known to live into their 20s.

6. Manx

The Manx breed is unique due to its taillessness, which is a result of a genetic mutation. Many cats typically live between 10 to 14 years, but many have been known to exceed this range.

7. Oriental Shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair is closely related to the Siamese and shares many of its characteristics. These cats can live up to 15 years or more, thanks to their active lifestyle and social nature.

8. Sphynx

The Sphynx, known for its lack of fur, is another breed that enjoys a long lifespan. These cats can live between 12 to 15 years. Regular veterinary care and a proper diet are essential for maintaining their health.

4. Russian Blue

The Russian Blue is a breed that not only boasts a beautiful, dense coat but also a reputation for a long lifespan. These cats can live up to 15 years or more, as noted in the article "10 Cat Breeds That Live the Longest." Their gentle temperament and low-maintenance grooming needs make them popular among cat lovers.

Connection and Happiness CRA INGS

I FIRST encountered Empanada de Kaliskis while researching for Adarna Food and Culture, the restaurant I cofounded in 2007. It wasn’t just an archival curiosity— it felt like a calling. There were no recent materials, no signage, no recipes passed down to the public. Its absence left me restless, sometimes waking up at night to pore again through old books and notes, hoping for a trace I might have missed. I wanted to taste history.

Then in 2010, a serendipitous trip to Malolos, Bulacan offered me my chance.

A friend invited me to meet her balikbayan companion, who took us through the remnants of his childhood—a grand old Art Deco theater he hoped to save, and the city’s quiet struggle to protect its heritage amid changing tides. At the end of the day, he mentioned casually that he wanted us to try his aunt’s restaurant that served Empanada de Kaliskis. I nearly shouted in disbelief. Could it be?

Fate had led me straight to the “holy grail.”

Nestled quietly behind the Malolos Church, El Bulakeña stood modestly on Tengco Street—three tables, a glass display case, and nearly two centuries of culinary tradition. No pomp, no proclamation. Just the quiet dignity of memory kept alive. There I met Mercy Antonio, and her busi-

ness partner, Tessie Luriaga—the fourthgeneration custodians of this heirloom. According to family lore, the empanada saga began in 1820 with sisters Agustina and Justina Domingo, taught by Spanish cooks who saw promise in their kitchen artistry. Their reputation spread, and Agustina built a business upon that delicate, flaky legacy. The recipe passed down through the matriarchs, always with the warning: if no one in the next generation was willing, let it end.

Empanada de Kaliskis

Originally known as Empanada de Malolos, it was the late culinary icon Mila Enriquez who suggested the name change to Empanada de Kaliskis—to distinguish it from the others and emphasize the crust’s signature “fish-scale” look. Through the years, this empanada has graced tables both modest and grand: from Malolos homes to Malacañang Palace. Mercy recalls delivering boxes to at least four presidents. One tycoon used to order his empanada in advance while still abroad, insisting it greet him upon arrival. These empanadas never lasted long at parties; they disappeared before reaching the buffet. Even during the Second World War, Japanese soldiers once gifted Lucila a pig in exchange for a batch. Originally made

'HALO-HALO, ANNYEONG!': BTS j-hope's love for Filipino comfort food

FILIPINO comfort food has long held a special place in the hearts of foreign visitors, from celebrities to chefs and K-pop idols alike. And for BTS’ j-hope, returning to the Philippines wasn’t just about music, but it was also a chance to rediscover a taste he first fell for eight years ago.

Back in 2017, during the BTS’ "Wings Tour," j-hope got to try a bowl of Sinigang na Lapu-Lapu during a livestream together with his fellow member, Suga. That sour-savory stew left a mark, and his fondness for Filipino cuisine has only deepened since. So when he came back to Manila for his solo "Hope On The Stage" concert last April, he once again turned to food for comfort and connection to his Filipino ARMYs (BTS fandom).

Following two sold-out shows at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, the K-pop superstar treated himself to a feast fit for a Filipino family gathering. In a casual livestream on Weverse, fans watched as j-hope enjoyed a spread of crispy pata, sinigang na baboy sa sampaloc, crispy sisig, garlic rice, and a cup of halo-halo to top it all off.

“This is my favorite dessert! Halo-halo!” he said, savoring the mix of shaved ice, ube, leche flan, and sweetened fruits.

The now-viral moment was instantly recognized by Filipino fans, who traced the food back to Manam, a homegrown restaurant famous for serving traditional Filipino dishes with a modern twist. Known for comforting classics like sinigang and sisig, Manam quickly became a trending topic alongside j-hope’s name online.

As screenshots from the livestream circulated online, “Manam” and

“Hobi” lit up social media feeds. Fans flocked to the restaurant’s branches, eager to experience the same meal their idol had. In response, Manam launched a limited-time set menu recreating j-hope’s order—yes, that includes a plate of crispy pata and a glass of halo-halo. It was eventually dubbed as Hobi Set by fans.

The restaurant also joined in the celebration, posting a message of gratitude towards fans who enjoy the local restaurant's special menu.

“Super amazing 'Hope On The Stage Manila' concert this weekend! Gamsahamnida (Thank you) j-hope!! Please rest, eat well, and enjoy some Filipino fare, our beloved Jhopeee. Mahal ka namin, walang uuwi. Saranghae!” it wrote in an Instagram story.

there. He also made sure to try out iconic fast-food chain Jollibee, joyfully sharing the experience with fans during his farewell at the Manila show. A user-friendly app for the deal-hunting foodie

AS A corporate girlie pushing 30, I’ve been working long enough to know that price tags of prized goods aren’t getting any lower, the same way I’m not getting younger.

Fortunately, a game-changer I’ve recently adopted at the behest of a trusted coworker is leading superapp Grab’s latest Dine Out feature, perfect for dine-in customers looking out and about for a delicious deal.

Promising premise

Accessible directly through the Superapp in Metro Manila and Boracay, Grab Dine Out is a tech-driven dining experience that lets users score significant savings at their fave restos or even discover must-try spots from a range of culinary options.

Dine Out Discounts can help you decide on where to eat by choosing from a list of partner establishments. Remember to inform the chosen restaurant before ordering if you plan on using the Dine Out tab, where you can input your bill and instantly enjoy savings of up to 20 percent off. Meanwhile, Dine Out Vouchers are perfect for those who prefer to plan ahead. Users may buy a discounted voucher before their meal and redeem it seamlessly when they dine in.

Sweet spot

Don’t get me wrong. I was already sold on the promise of savings. But I knew I had to put Grab Dine Out to the test to check if it lived up to its bold claims. I immediately went to the nearest mall, SM City Grand Central, to try it out. Lo and behold, the app feature worked then and there!

Through Dine Out, I saw that one of the many partner merchants was Caramia Cakes & Gelato. I thought since it was my birth week, I could buy an entire Mango Magnifico cake to share with the family.

Through Grab Dine Out, with the help of an e-wallet linked to my Grab account, I was able to buy a P1,500 voucher at 20 percent off for P1,200. This allowed me to buy my desired cake (P1,133) on top of a pint of my favorite Strawberry Supreme gelato (P460), by adding only P93 to my total bill of P1,293. For a cart value of P1,593, that’s a total of P300 saved!

After all, another goal for the money-conscious is to ensure bang for their buck. It’s primarily about making the most value out of one’s hard-earned cash.

Raving review

Grab Dine Out is definitive proof that one can have their cake and eat it, too.

A highlight would be the feature’s standout convenience, as seen in seamless digital booking and hassle-free redemption.

This allowed me to discover a selection of restaurants within reach—but otherwise unbeknownst to me. The mangoes in whipped cream coating cashew brittles in light chiffon were delectable.

However, it was only the icing on top of a delicious user experience using Grab Dine Out. No notes!

Through food, he found comfort, connection, and celebration with the fans who welcomed him back with open arms and full hearts. In a city where cuisine is culture, j-hope’s Manila stop became more than a concert, it became a shared meal, a cultural moment, and a reminder of how food brings people together, no matter where they come from.

with pork, the filling shifted to chicken in later years—as clients preferred something lighter. Beef was always deemed too heavy for its delicate shell.

Replicating the recipe? Many have tried.

It’s not just the ingredients—it’s the devotion. Dough is kneaded in the evening, then rolled into a large sheet and tightly coiled. Slices of that coil become disks rolled on greased banana leaves. Freshly cooked chicken—personally chosen and hand-shredded—is sautéed with spices and potatoes, always made from scratch, never recycled. Any excess filling becomes lumpia or torta. The dough and filling live only for the day. The ritual begins all over again the next day.

Then there’s the frying: the empanadas are cooked one at a time. One turner lays the empanada in oil, while the other turner is used to toss hot oil over it to coax the delicate overlapping kaliskis to emerge— golden, crisp, translucent. As light hits the shell, it casts an amber glow.

The first bite breaks the silence. Shards of crust give way to a sweet-savory med-

ley that tastes patient. Not rushed. Not reheated. You wonder what stories were inserted into those folds.

This isn’t a snack. It is an opportunity to share an experience from the past. Unlike a picture or a relic, an heirloom delicacy, affords us to travel through time—to see, feel and taste what our ancestors enjoyed. We get to sit with them and know them. It demands our attention, our respect. And in its delightful texture and flavor, it comforts. A nostalgic embrace from a past that makes us part of it as we now carry it forward to the future.

Many things have changed since that time. In place of their restaurant, there is now only a takeout store. In 2015, the city conferred to Mercy Antonio the Culinary Heritage Award in recognition of her contribution to Bulacan’s culinary traditions. Articles have been written and TV shows have featured them. Those who seek the empanada will not have a hard time anymore. But the Empanada de Kaliskis endures not because of novelty but because it carries our aspirations for a good life. It comforts not just the palate but the spirit that continues to live in us. Each bite evokes an old memory adding to the layers of new ones we create toward an enduring heritage that we would now be able to recognize as our own.

Simple tweaks to elevate Filipino comfort food

WHEN we mention "comfort food," we often mean dishes that disarm us with unapologetic servings of carbs and sugar, or stir memories of childhood and cherished moments.

A guilty pleasure of sorts.

However, a trend over the past couple of years is to view comfort food in a more sophisticated light. It is very much possible to elevate food that speaks to the stomach and soul without sacrificing nutritional or emotional value.

Professional food services brand Unilever Food Solutions (UFS) in its 2024 and 2025 Future Menus reports discussed the trend of "modernized comfort food [that] continues to meet demand for classics with a twist and delivers authentic dishes."

"Comfort food as we know it is changing.

Where once we saw

comfort food as dishes that were familiar and safe, we’re making way for new recipes that reflect the heritage of the chef and the restaurant’s locale," UFS reported.

"Through rich culinary storytelling and the chef’s genuine emotional connection to the dish, diners are presented with new and fresh food experiences that feel and taste special. Think classic and rustic ancestral recipes to be shared and enjoyed to create the new comfort food," it added.

• New episode of locally made Youtube Series makes understanding climate change easier for kids and families

• 4th Episode of environmental series shares song from an unlikely villain

MIMING and Friends, the beloved animated YouTube miniseries, has released its fourth episode, continuing its journey of educating children and families about environmental sustainability through songs and animated characters.

Miming and Friends is a collaboration between Mondelēz International in the Philippines, and husband-and-wife tandem, Ramon del Prado and Meryll Yan – the local animated content creators behind the Miming and Friends YouTube channel. The series is dedicated to promoting sustainable snacking and responsible waste management practices through engaging and educational content. Partnered with the latter is Save Philippine Seas (SPS), a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving coastal and marine resources for collective action and behavior change.

The latest episode tackles the pressing issue of waste mismanagement and its relationship with climate change, bringing the characters together to learn about greenhouse gases and their impact on the world. “Episode 4 touches into the critical topic of climate change,” said Miming and Friends co-creator, Meryll Yan. “We believe that by understanding the causes and effects of greenhouse gases, we can empower the next generation to become proactive environmental stewards.”

The episode also introduces a new character – one who has a lot to say about greenhouse gas emissions and where they come from. Named Ghregoryo, the character is painted as a villain and has a very compelling song in the episode, which hopefully shines a light on the importance of individual actions.

“This episode dives into how our choices can affect the ocean and our climate in many unexpected ways,” explained Anna Oposa, Chief Mermaid and Executive Director of SPS. “We hope to help the youth connect their everyday actions like energy consumption or accumulating too much waste to the larger issue of greenhouse gases and the urgent need for responsible stewardship.”

“This newest adventure on greenhouse gases reminds us that building a sustainable future is a shared responsibility, and that everyone has a role to play,” shared Caitlin Punzalan, Corporate and Government Affairs Lead at Mondelēz International in the Philippines. “We are proud to engage with communities across the Philippines and inspire collective action towards a healthier planet.”

Since the release of Episode 3 in 2024, the channel has experienced consistent growth, climbing to over 42,800 total subscribers. This surge in viewership and engagement reflects the series’ ability to resonate with kiddie and family audiences and its effectiveness in delivering important messages about environmental stewardship.

Mondelēz International has been instrumental in supporting the series, aligning with their commitment to sustainability and waste management. Through the adventures of anthropomorphic cat-fish Miming and her friends, the series aims to inspire young viewers to take action and make a positive impact on the environment.

“At Mondelēz International, we believe that #SustainableSnacking starts at home,” adds Punzalan. “Miming and Friends provides a creative platform for reaching the right audiences with engaging content that inspires real and sustainable change. Sustainability can sometimes seem complex, especially for children. We want to help break down these concepts to show how our daily actions can have a positive impact.”

Beyond the success of the series, Mondelēz International also achieved key sustainability milestones, including the receipt of Plastic Credit Exchange’s (PCX) Plastic Cleanup Partner seal, recognizing the company’s efforts to not only meet but exceed the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) law requirement of collecting post-consumer plastic packaging. Through its partnership with waste diverters, the company collects the equivalent weight of the plastic packaging it uses for its snack products and ensures this is diverted through recycling and other means to avoid being marine litter or landfill.

Based on the Future Menus reports, simple tweaks to elevate Filipino comfort food usually mean a combination of two

seemingly unlikely partners that end up marrying well together.

Chef Paulo Sia recommended combining food qualities, such as the "comfort of traditional flavors with the convenience of a burger," to produce the likes of his humba rice burger with cilantro-cheese foam.

One may also prepare comfort food in a melting pot that mixes different cultures, as chef Pipo Aluning did with his sticky adobo pork belly in mantou buns that blend "Chinese comfort food with Filipino flavors... [creating] a gourmet fusion...offering rich, savory flavors in a convenient format."

Chef Brando Santos similarly invented a lechon kawali kare-kare burrito as part of the "borderless cuisine" concept for a Mexicaninspired, Filipino-style take that delivers crunch, umami, and richness in a single bite. Lastly, one can fuse two different dishes altogether, which Aluning achieved with his lugaw balbacua.

"I wanted to combine two beloved street foods — and this hearty meal brings together favorite flavors from across the country... showcasing the best of both worlds," he concluded.

DOT PUTS PHILIPPINES

Department of Tourism (DOT) is making significant strides to position Filipino gastronomy on the global culinary map, marked by the arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in the country. As the prestigious Guide prepares for its much-anticipated 2026 launch in Manila and environs, and Cebu, it underscores the administration’s commitment to showcasing the Philippines’ culinary excellence.

“In the Philippines, gastronomy is embedded in our national tourism strategy through the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028, which our President approved at the beginning of his administration. By way of this plan, we have taken deliberate and focused steps to harness the power of Filipino food—not just as a source of pride, but as a key driver for sustainable and inclusive tourism development. Food, after all, is our love language. It is a reflection of our identity, our culture, and our way of life. From north to south, every region offers a culinary story waiting to be told,” Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said.

panga, Tagaytay, and Cavite, highlighting the rich and diverse culinary offerings of the country.

At the onset of the Marcos Administration, the DOT has pursued the diversification of the country’s tourism portfolio, to highlight products including gastronomy. As may be recalled, the Philippines successfully hosted the inaugural UN Tourism Forum on Gastronomy for Asia and the Pacific in Cebu on June 26, 2024. The groundbreaking event brought together over 600 delegates from more than 40 countries, focusing on how gastronomy tourism can drive community development and sustainability. The forum showcased the talents of esteemed Filipino chefs, and resulted in the Cebu Call to Action on Gastronomy Tourism.

The DOT also recognized more destinations emerging as culinary powerhouses for the Philippines. Iloilo City earned the title of UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy in 2023, Angeles City in

Pampanga was named Asia’s Best Emerging Culinary City Destination 2024 by the World Culinary Awards, and Bacolod City has been declared the Slow Food Hub for Asia Pacific, and is set to host Terra Madre Asia Pacific in October this year.

As the Slow Food International Hub for Asia Pacific, Bacolod will highlight traditional food cultures and sustainable practices.

These distinctions further cement the Philippines’ reputation as a center for sustainable and heritage-based gastronomy. As the designated Slow Food International Hub for Asia Pacific, Bacolod will spotlight traditional food cultures and environmentally conscious culinary practices.

“With gastronomy tourism ranking very high in the priorities of the Department of Tourism under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., whose vision is one of tourism transformation, the Slow Food movement in the Philippines is increasing the value proposition of our destinations while fostering regeneration of our natural resources and ingredients, and expanding economic opportunities one meaningful and delicious dish at a time,” the Secretary said in her speech during the 2nd Terra Madre Visayas regional hosting in Negros Occidental last November 21, 2024.

Another project to celebrate “chibog tourism”, as President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. puts it, is DOT’s “Philippine Eatsperience” initiative, a year-

long celebration of Filipino food in Intramuros and Rizal Park featuring offerings from 45 local vendors, the event draws large crowds, especially on weekends and holidays.

To sustain this momentum, the DOT unveiled the Strategic Framework and Roadmap for Food and Gastronomy Tourism on May 28, 2025. The framework provides a development guide for tourism stakeholders. The Department likewise introduced Market Tourism as a new sub-product. Through dedicated modules, the program empowers stakeholders to rediscover local markets, document unique regional products, and design curated tour routes—transforming traditional public markets into vibrant tourism hubs.

Additionally, the DOT collaborated with top Filipino chefs and culinary writers to launch the third edition of Kulinarya: A Guidebook to Philippine Cuisine on June 10, 2025. Originally published in 2008, Kulinarya remains a passionate mission to elevate Filipino culinary traditions at home and abroad. The latest edition features notes and insights from acclaimed Filipino chefs, sharing some of the country’s best-kept culinary secrets.

Together, these efforts reflect the Marcos Administration’s bold vision of transforming the Philippines into a premier global culinary destination—enhancing national pride, driving tourism, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Bringing local comfort food to the global market

BANGKOK—FOR many Filipinos, comfort food means more than just filling a craving -- it’s about reconnecting with childhood memories, traditions, and the feeling of home, no matter where in the world they are.

At this year’s THAIFEX–Anuga Asia food trade show in Bangkok, Thailand, JAMLA Corporation chief financial officer Andrew Panopio shared how a simple idea of making time-honored Filipino dishes available in instant form has opened the door for local flavors to reach international shelves. From chocolate rice porridge or commonly known as champorado to ginataang mais, these dishes are often seen as too tedious to prepare from scratch. But when done right, even the instant versions can deliver the same sense of warmth.

“Comfort food for me is when you’re very tired and ask yourself what you want to eat. It’s your inner craving, what you know will never fail you,” Panopio told Manila Standard Cravings in an exclusive interview. That craving sparked his family’s venture into instant products in the late 1990s. It started with their hot chocolate blend, based on a recipe that’s been in their family since 1949, originally served using roasted tableya in Batangas. When Panopio’s parents moved back to the Philippines, they saw an opportunity to create a quick-prep version that re-

tained its rich, bittersweet flavor.

From there, their company, JAMLA Corporation, expanded its offerings. Today, under brands like Alfonso’s Hot Chocolate and Tita Lulu’s, they produce instant champorado, ube champorado, arroz caldo, ginataang mais, and ginataang munggo, all using real ingredients such as “malagkit” rice, mung beans, and roasted cacao.

“These are dishes we love but don’t always have time to make. You just add hot water, and that’s it,” he said.

Panopio explained that part of their motivation was to preserve Filipino recipes while adjusting them for today’s busy lifestyles.

“Not everyone has the time to make ginataang munggo from scratch. Even I don’t. That’s exactly why we made the instant version, so you don’t have to choose between comfort and convenience,” shared Panopio.

The products have gained traction both locally and abroad. Their biggest overseas market is the Middle East, but they also export to Taiwan, Japan, Guam, and other regions with strong Filipino communities.

Panopio said ube champorado, in particular, has found unexpected success in the U.S., where ube has become a trending flavor. International customers often learn about the products through food expos, word of mouth, or social media platforms like TikTok, where food demos and reviews help build

curiosity and trust.

However, pitching Filipino comfort food to foreign consumers isn’t always easy.

“It’s hard to explain champorado or chocolate rice porridge. Most people don’t get it until they taste it. That’s when it clicks,” he shared.

To introduce unfamiliar dishes, they often start with hot chocolate, which tends to be more accessible to global palates.

“Once they try it and realize it’s not like Belgian chocolate—it’s roasted, bittersweet, very Filipino—they get curious about the rest,” he continued.

While some may associate instant food with being overly processed or low-quality, Panopio emphasized that JAMLA is taking a different approach. Their recipes are based on real home cooking, and they strive to retain flavor and substance using real rice, real chocolate, real munggo.

He also acknowledged that instant food can be met with skepticism, but believes quality speaks for itself.

“When you expect champorado or arroz caldo, it delivers so much that you find yourself finishing the bowl,” he said.

The company’s portions are also larger than average instant meals, which Panopio sees as part of their value.

“Even if it’s priced a bit higher, people keep buying. It doesn’t just feed you, it satisfies you,” added Panopio.

Looking ahead, JAMLA hopes to expand its presence in colder markets like South Korea while continuing to serve its strong local base.

“Export is tempting because of the volume, but we’ll never neglect the Philippine market. Here, people already know what these dishes are. We don’t have to explain. It’s like marketing to instinct,” he shared.

For JAMLA, the goal isn’t just commercial success, it’s also a cultural connection. Their products may be instant, but the memories they evoke are slow-cooked.

EVEN Filipino food works hard overseas.

There is no shortage of restaurants offering Filipino food worldwide, keeping it real and authentic for the Pinoys living abroad while still catering to international tastes. Here is just a handful of such establishments that have served as the Philippines' pride over the years due to their comfort food offerings, unlike anything else on the market.

FOOD AND MEMORY:

Nostalgia, Connection and Happiness CRA INGS

HEART Mate Canola Oil, the country’s leading canola oil brand, isn’t just unveiling a new look — it’s reshaping how consumers experience a kitchen essential.

With a thoughtfully redesigned bottle that blends aesthetics and function, the brand’s refresh doesn’t shout for attention — it earns it.

At first glance, the new Heart Mate bottle strikes a balance of elegance and practicality. Designed by no less than a French designer, the new form brings a refined, modern touch. At the same time, it was thoughtfully made with everyday Filipino kitchens in mind, now compact for easier storage, even on tight shelves, and slimmer for a more comfortable grip.

Beyond form and function, the new shape also makes room for what truly matters: Heart Mate’s promise of heart health and trusted quality.

As Heart Mate celebrates 25 years, it strengthens its promise and commitment to helping Filipinos cook heart-healthy meals every day — in ways that are simple, accessible, and part of every home.

Anchoring the bottle is a new symbol that combines the letter “H” and a heart. The heart also forms an “M” and resembles a canola flower petal. This simple yet thoughtful design connects to the brand name and highlights Heart Mate’s natural roots and commitment to heart health. This small but meaningful visual cue reflects Heart Mate's promise of quality and care in every bottle.

Hospitality,

CIBO make strategic shift

AMADO Forés, founder of AF Hospitality (AFH) which includes a mano, Ramen Ron, and Steak & Frice, announced the inclusion of Lusso, Grace Park, and Margarita Florals under his portfolio of brands.

He now also leads CIBO, the beloved Italian casual dining brand founded by his mother, Margarita, in 1997.

CIBO will continue to operate with its established leadership team and will now manage Margarita Signature Caterer, ensuring the same attention to quality and detail that defined the brand.

The transition honors the legacy of celebrated chef, entrepreneur, and cultural tastemaker Margarita Forés while positioning the group for a dynamic future in the Philippine culinary landscape.

“This has been a time of deep reflection, and I carry with me not only grief, but also the profound honor of continuing what she built,” said Amado during an intimate gathering at Lusso's Podium branch.

In a move that strengthens the company’s long-term vision, Amado’s wife, Carmela, joins AF Hospitality as Managing Director. With nearly a decade of experience in retail and marketing, Carmela brings fresh perspective and operational excellence to the company.

Key leadership updates at CIBO include:

• Amado is now the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CIBO.

• Chef Jorge Mendez remains as the Executive Chef, a role he’s held for two years. In addition, he will be serving as the Direc-

venient yet flavorful meal.

Moreover, Watami’s appeal goes beyond its latest offering. The brand is known for delivering crave-worthy Japanese dishes with premium ingredients at a reasonable price. Signature dishes such as Salmon in Stone Pot, an assortment of grilled skewers, and the Salmon Taco Aburi

• Edgar Allan Caper, a long-time executive of the brand and former Chief Operating Officer, has been appointed Managing Director.

• Bledes Forés Legarda and Oye Forés are continuing their roles as Managing Director and Executive Vice President, respectively

• Mercedes Forés, having worked as CIBO's Marketing and R&D Director, will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer, succeeding Caper.

AF Hospitality also announced it will no longer pursue the previously announced restaurant concept Margarita at the Ayala Triangle.

“This opens up exciting opportunities to bring her vision in more meaningful and creative ways,” Amado explained. “This was not a decision we made lightly. It comes from a place of deep responsibility and even deeper love.”

The growth of AF Hospitality represents both a tribute and a transformation rooted in the excellence established by Margarita and the company’s commitment to preserving her culinary heritage while pursuing innovation across its portfolio.

In September, Amado and Carmela will fly to Naples to attend the World’s 50 Top Pizza Awards. This after a mano ranked 9th in the Asia-Pacific Region in March, which guarantees them a spot as one of the World’s Top Pizzerias.

As one of Japan’s leading food and beverage brands, Watami has built a reputation for accessible Japanese dining, and its Teishoku sets are the latest addition to a diverse and growing menu that caters to both new diners and longtime fans of the cuisine. With the introduction of Teishoku sets, Watami continues to highlight the harmony of taste, presentation, and value, offering Filipinos more reasons to enjoy Japanese food in a casual, everyday setting.

Grace Park, known for offering Chef Margarita’s heirloom recipes and soulful homecooking, recently drew global attention with its feature on the Netflix show "Somebody Feed Phil." As it continues to champion Filipino cuisine, guests can look forward to exciting developments from the brand soon.

Lusso's Greenbelt 5 location will soon expand to welcome more guests.

Margarita Florals is set to launch a new website soon to cater to any and all life events.

This year, CIBO, which is celebrating its 28th anniversary, continues to expand outside of Metro Manila and will open new locations in Iloilo, La Union, and Baguio City.

CIBO’s new Japanese concept, Makanai, created by Chef Jorge, is also set to open next month.

Along the surface, four heart-shaped petals are embossed into the front, back, and sides of the bottle. These elegant contours aren’t just decorative, they give the bottle a tactile signature, setting it apart from the sea of generic oil packaging on grocery shelves. Consumers don’t just see the difference; they feel it. The logo has also been refreshed to make “Heart Mate” the hero. Bolder, cleaner, and more prominent, it allows shoppers to instantly recognize the product and its 100 percent pure canola oil declaration. It’s a confident move that signals the brand’s leadership and clarity in a crowded category.

From shelf appeal to grip comfort, every curve, panel, and line of the new bottle has been carefully considered. It’s a design that doesn’t just look premium — it feels personal.

While the packaging has evolved, what’s inside hasn’t changed — and for good reason. It’s still the same 100% pure canola oil that Filipino families have trusted for years: zero cholesterol, rich in omega-3 and omega-6, and the lowest in saturated fats among vegetable oils — helping lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Ideal for everything from stir-fries and stews to baked dishes and weekend frying sprees, it remains as versatile as ever. Heart Mate Canola Oil still carries the same love each person pours into the pan when preparing meals for their loved ones.

Desert tones and laid-back silhouettes

ITALIAN luxury brand Zegna brought its Oasi Zegna vision to Dubai with a show inspired by desert landscapes, live music, and fluid tailoring.

Held at the Dubai Opera—transformed into “Villa Zegna” for the week—the presentation paid tribute to founder Ermenegildo Zegna ’s legacy of seeing beyond, imagining fashion as a lived experience.

Artistic director Alessandro Sartori unveiled a collection shaped by real-world wear. Jackets were tied at the waist, loafers were worn like slippers, and garments were faded and crinkled to mimic the effects of sun and time.

The silhouettes were loose and deconstructed, with jackets as light as shirts, boxy versions of the Il Conte, and pajama-striped suits. Shirts doubled as outerwear, leather coats were ultra-light, and pieces like anorak knits and cardigan jackets blurred categories. Accessories included soft moccasins, wraparound sunglasses, and oversized bags.

The palette featured tonal shades such as bianco Oasi, burro di montagna, and caligine, contrasted with vibrant notes like olio, cognac, ciclamino, and fumo. Textures ranged from summer Shetland blends to jacquard linen-wool, silk poplins, knitted leather, and hemp canvas—many crafted using Oasi Lino.

Sartori described the collection as grounded in lived experiences. “There is an immediacy and a liveliness to the earthy allure,” he said, citing inspiration from a photo of clothes casually draped on a chair—“a life lived intensely.” He emphasized that wearers complete the design process, giving garments meaning in daily life.

AS MONSOON rains drench parts of the Philippines, a new wave of indoor TikTok content is capturing viewers’ attention. Creators are turning mundane rainy-day activities into viral trends, proving that compelling content doesn’t require elaborate setups, only a dash of creativity.

With downpours keeping many indoors, TikTok users are documenting their unfiltered daily routines. Kitchen experiments, from failed dalgona coffee attempts to lopsided pancakes, are resonating with audiences who appreciate the humor in imperfection. Family pranks, like startling a napping parent or orchestrating a sibling scavenger hunt, are also gaining traction for their genuine, often chaotic reactions. Even quiet, solitary moments are finding an audience. Creators film pets napping by windows, steaming cups of coffee against the sound of rainfall, and half-watched TV series in the background.

For friend groups stuck inside, staycations have become a hotbed for viral content. Improv skits where friends mimic each other’s mannerisms or reenact pop-culture moments frequently go viral, showcasing the dynamics of close-knit relationships. Game nights,

TWO nonprofit organizations joined forces to host the 102nd MAD Camp in Cabangan, Zambales, bringing together 27 volunteers and 50 children from coastal communities for a weekend of values formation and environmental education.

The initiative marked the first full co-creation effort between I am MAD (Making A Difference) Volunteers Inc. and Alon and Araw Club (AAC), a group focused on ocean protection and community development. The camp featured a series of sessions on storytelling, team-building, and environmental awareness for children aged 10 to 12 from San Isidro and Sapangbato Elementary School.

“This camp was different because it was not just a partnership; it was a co-designed experience,” said I am MAD co-founder Maco Ravanzo. “We shared our core values, and in return, we learned from AAC’s environmental work.” AAC project manager Lourie Garcia, also a graduate of I am MAD’s Builders Training Program, led the camp’s planning and coordination. Garcia, who is based in Cabangan, said the experience was both challenging and fulfilling.

particularly “Who’s most likely to” challenges, often spiral into hilarious roast sessions, while watch parties capture raw group reactions to shocking movie twists or jump scares.

Individual creators are leaning into the cozy, introspective vibe of rainy days. “Get ready with me” videos take on a new twist as creators oscillate between dressing up for motivation or surrendering to pajamas. Mundane activities like cooking comfort food, such as bubbling champorado, or arranging a delivered meal become visually satisfying narratives. Unfiltered “rainy day diaries”—no “script, no perfect lighting—are proving that sometimes, the simplest moments resonate the most.

As creators rely on consistent uploads, telecom providers like Smart Prepaid are seeing increased demand for data packages tailored to social media use. Their Power All bundles, which include unlimited access to TikTok, Instagram,

and Facebook alongside calls and texts, cater to heavy uploaders and casual users alike. Analysts note that reliable connectivity has become essential for creators capitalizing on real-time trends. The surge in indoor content creation has highlighted the importance of reliable connectivity. Smart Prepaid’s Power All service offers data packages that include unlimited access to TikTok, Facebook and Instagram alongside standard calls and texts, with its Power All 99 (10GB) and Power All 149 (16GB) plans being particularly popular among frequent uploaders.

village, which promotes waste segregation and plastic upcycling. AAC has diverted over 25,000 kilograms of plastic through its community-led initiatives, according to its founders.

“Environmental concerns are often not a priority in coastal communities where families struggle with daily needs,” said AAC co-founder Gabi del Rosario. “But when we combine values education with environmental action, we create space for long-term engagement.”

A key moment during the camp was the “MAD Circle,” where children read letters to their parents following sessions on family and reconciliation. Volunteers said the experience reinforced their understanding of the intersecting challenges in coastal areas.

The program was supported by local donors who helped fund meals, transportation, and school supplies. Organizers said the event underscored how individual efforts can scale into broader community impact.

Iloilo hotels among Asia’s best for budget stays

ILOILO has been named one of Asia’s most affordable summer destinations, according to digital travel platform Agoda, offering a strong opportunity for Philippine hoteliers to tap into the growing market of value-seeking travelers.

With average nightly room rates in Iloilo among the lowest in Asia, the city joins a list led by Surabaya (Indonesia), Tirupati (India), Hat Yai (Thailand), and Dalat (Vietnam).

Agoda’s data reveals that Gen Z and millennial travelers are prioritizing affordable stays, with more than half of Gen Z respondents aiming to spend under USD 50 per night. Millennials share similar habits, pointing to a broader trend in budget-conscious travel across the region.

Agoda’s research highlights solo travel as a growing trend, especially among women from Hong Kong and Thailand. Philippine destinations like Iloilo can appeal to these travelers with time-sensitive promos, discounted solo packages, and curated local perks.

Food remains a major travel motivator, especially for tourists from Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Hotels in the Philippines are encouraged to collaborate with local chefs, feature regional dishes, and offer pop-up dining to elevate the travel experience while maintaining affordability.

LHOSPITALITY

OCATED in the final ecological frontier, Puerto Princesa, Palawan is a paradise renowned for its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and breathtaking underground river, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the capital city of Palawan, it serves as a gateway to some of the most stunning natural wonders in the world, attracting travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and unparalleled luxury.

Amidst this tropical haven, SotoGrande Hotel and Crown Hotel Palawan have become premier hospitality destinations, offering world-class service and unforgettable experiences. At the helm of their operations is  Karine Lumbo a dynamic leader whose expertise and passion for excellence have elevated both properties to new heights.

ASIAWORLD Hospitality has partnered with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde to provide internationally recognized certifications for hospitality students, in a move seen to strengthen Philippine tourism education and workforce readiness. The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding between AsiaWorld Hospitality—the official Philippine representative of the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI)—and Benilde’s School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management (SHRIM).

Under the partnership, AsiaWorld will offer training and credentialing for the Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP) certification, described by Benilde Chancellor  Benhur Ong  as “the gold standard in guest service excellence.” The credential aims to give Benilde graduates a competitive advantage locally and internationally.

The agreement also covers student internships, research projects, and faculty immersion programs, along

strategic initiatives that enhance service quality and operational efficiency.

Lumbo’s journey in hospitality began 11 years ago as a front desk agent managing reservations—a humble start that remains a point of pride. From day one, she was captivated by the human element of the industry: welcoming guests, sharing in their stories, and shaping their experiences. What began as processing bookings evolved into a deeper understanding. She wasn’t just handling check-ins, but helping craft the hotel’s narrative—a philosophy that still guides her today.
