CALL TO START IMPEACHMENT TRIAL ASAP GAINS GROUND

STUDENT COUNCILS, MORE LEGAL, ACADEMIC GROUPS JOIN CALL

OPPOSITION against more delays in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte has snowballed, with several student councils joining more academic and religious groups in calling on the Senate to start the proceedings immediately.

The student councils of the University of Sto. Tomas, San Beda and Polytechnic University of the Philippines as well as the Benilde School of Diplomacy and Governance, Ateneo School of Government, Ateneo Human Rights Center, Philippine Law School Faculty and Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) Board of Trustees were among the latest to add their voices to calls for the impeachment trial to begin without delay.

On Friday, faculty members of the San Beda Graduate School of Law – including retired Supreme Court Associate Justices Adolf Azcuna and Jose Vitug as well as graduate school dean Fr. Ranhilio Aquino – and over 100 members of the UP College of Law faculty also called on the Senate to “let the truth unfold.”

“Now more than ever, it is crucial to rise in collective action, defend our democratic institutions, and ensure that no public official is above the law,” the University of Santo Tomas Central Student Council said.

“A thorough and impartial investigation is essential to restore trust in government institutions and uphold the rule of law…We stand in solidarity with millions of Filipinos who demand accountability, good governance and leadership that truly serve the people.”

CATCH OF THE DAY. Fisherfolk turn over to authorities suspected shabu they found floating off the coasts of Bolinao and Agno towns in Pangasinan on Friday, June 6, 2025. Philippine Coast Guard-Pangasinan

AT LEAST P3.99 billion worth of suspected shabu have been recovered off the coastal barangays in Pangasinan from Thursday to Friday, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said.

On Thursday, fishermen found about P1.17 billion worth of illegal drugs placed in sacks off the coasts of Bolinao, Agno and Bani towns.

On Friday, a total of 452 more vacuum-sealed packs, each with one kilo of suspected shabu, were recovered by fishers in Barangay Balingasay in Bolinao and Barangay Boboy in Agno.

On May 29, 2025, at least P1.5 billion worth of floating shabu found by 10 Bataan fishermen off the waters of Masinloc, Zambales were also surrendered to authorities.

“As of this update, a total of 28 sacks of suspected shabu have been

NUP EXPELS FRASCO OVER ‘ONE-MAN DECISION’

THE National Unity Party has expelled Deputy Speaker and Cebu Rep. Vincent Franco Frasco for going against the political party’s official position to support Speaker Martin Romualdez’s continuity of leadership in the 20th Congress. NUP president and Camarines

Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte confirmed this Saturday following Frasco’s open admission that he did not sign the manifesto of support by the supermajority coalition for Romualdez.

“The party leadership has decided to expel Duke (Frasco) from the NUP because his unilateral decision not to support Rep. Martin’s continued stay as Speaker in the next Congress is a blatant breach of the NUP’s official position of unequivocal support for the Speaker to keep his premier post in the next Congress,” Villafuerte said.

“Given that this has been the unanimous stance of our party, Duke’s oneman decision to withdraw support from the Speaker runs counter to the NUP’s official manifestation of support for Congressman Martin—and means his status as a member of our party has become untenable.”

It was also his second medal in this year’s edition of the Asian Championships, after securing a bronze in the individual all-around Thursday. Turn on A4

HOUSE OKS BILL ON DISASTERS AS NDRRMC RAISES ALERT

THE House of Representatives approved on third and final reading a bill institutionalizing a mechanism and setting criteria for the declaration of a state of imminent disaster and providing for government responses.

House Bill 11430, or the proposed Declaration of State of Imminent Disaster Act, was passed unanimously with a 177-0 vote.

Speaker Martin Romualdez, the

bill’s principal author, said the measure seeks to reduce the loss of lives, properties, and livelihoods in the event of natural or man-made disasters.

“The proposed law will enable

the national government, local government units, and our communities to better prepare for and respond to disasters or calamities,” Romualdez said.

Under the bill, the President may declare a state of imminent disaster over affected barangays, municipalities, cities, provinces, or regions, based on guidelines from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Local chief executives may also declare the same within their jurisdiction upon recommendation of their local DRRM councils. The measure also mandates the integration of anticipatory interventions in LGU

and national agency budgets and plans.

As Congress pushes for stronger disaster preparedness, the NDRRMC elevated its operations center alert status to blue on Friday in response to a low-pressure area (LPA) spotted near Guiuan, Samar in Eastern Visayas. The LPA, in combination with the southwest monsoon or habagat, is expected to bring widespread rains, flooding, and rain-induced landslides. To mitigate risks, all regional and local DRRM councils, along with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), have been directed to activate minimum preparedness protocols.

LAWMAKER HAILS DEFENSE LEADERS FOR EXPOSING CHINESE PROPAGANDA

CAGAYAN de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez praised Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. for confronting Chinese disinformation at the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Rodriguez commended the two for calling global attention to China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea and for denouncing online smear campaigns.

He particularly lauded their strong stand against “Media Unlocked,” a platform backed by China Daily, accusing it of peddling fake news to undermine Philippine officials. The lawmaker urged Filipinos to remain vigilant against misinformation targeting the country’s maritime claims and defense leaders.

Teodoro revealed that two fluent English-speaking hosts from Media Unlocked attempted to provoke him and Brawner during the forum, later twisting the encounter in videos circulated on Chinese platforms. “They were pretending to be journalists,” Teodoro said. “Their goal was to create a misleading narrative.” Brawner also said he was blocked from heading to a bilateral meeting and was falsely portrayed as avoiding questions about the West Philippine Sea. TAGUIG CITY LAUNCHES DOOR-TO-DOOR HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING DRIVE

THE City of Taguig has launched “Ready, Test, Go,” a door-to-door HIV counseling and testing service aimed at expanding awareness and curbing infection rates.

The program runs Monday to Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., offering free, confidential, and accessible services for residents who cannot visit clinics.

HIV counselors from the Taguig Social Hygiene Clinic are deployed across barangays, bringing with them testing kits and educational materials. Residents can call district hotlines or visit their local health centers for assistance. Mayor Lani Cayetano said the program ensures access to care and reduces stigma, especially among young people.

With 57 new infections reported daily in early 2025, the Department of Health has been directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to enhance HIV services nationwide. The Philippine National AIDS Council has also recommended declaring a national public health emergency to address the alarming surge. Joel E. Zurbano

ARMED FORCES WELCOMES JAPAN’S RATIFICATION OF MILITARY ACCESS PACT

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) welcomed Japan’s ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), calling it a landmark step in strengthening defense ties and regional stability.

AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the agreement’s role in enabling joint training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response with the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF).

The RAA, signed in Manila in July 2024 and ratified by President Marcos in November, outlines protocols for troop movement, facility access, and legal jurisdiction for visiting forces. The Senate later concurred with the ratification in December.

“This agreement reinforces our shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific,” Brawner said, expressing gratitude to Japanese officials, particularly Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, for their cooperation. The AFP, he added, remains dedicated to sovereignty while deepening its alliances with trusted partners.

AUTHORITIES SEIZE P307M WORTH OF SMUGGLED SUGAR IN BULACAN

AUTHORITIEs seized over P307 million

worth of suspected illegally stored sugar in Bulacan, as part of an intensified crackdown on agricultural smuggling led by the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

The raid, conducted on Friday, June 6, targeted three warehouses operated by BRAE Sugar Trading at Muralla Industrial Park in Barangay Perez, Meycauayan City.

In a statement on Saturday, CIDG said the joint operation was carried out by

CIDG-Bulacan, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture’s Inspectorate and Enforcement team and the Sugar Regulatory Administration. The teams executed search warrants for violations of Republic Act No. 10845 (Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016) in relation to Republic Act No. 10659 (Sugarcane Industry Development Act of 2015).

The operation yielded 95,568 sacks of sugar, valued at approximately P307.7 million.

“The illegal storage of agricultural products, regardless of quantity, is a crime that undermines food security, hurts our

local farmers, and deprives the government of vital revenues,” said CIDG officerin-charge Col. Ranie Hachuela. He added that large-scale agricultural smuggling is considered economic sabotage and carries stiffer penalties. “This confiscation of alleged illegally stored sugar significantly prevented hoarding and economic sabotage. It underscores our unyielding stance against smuggling of agricultural products,” he said. Authorities urged the public to report suspected smuggling or hoarding in their communities, assuring swift and decisive action in response.

COAST GUARD: NEXT PRESIDENT MUST CONTINUE FIGHT FOR WPS

COMMODORE Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on West Philippine Sea (WPS) matters, stated on Saturday that the National Task Force for the WPS (NTF-WPS) has been publicizing China’s aggressive actions in the disputed waters to help ensure that future Philippine presidents remain committed to defending the nation’s maritime sovereignty.

“We need to reach out and increase awareness to make sure that the President elected in 2028 will not set aside

Tarriela emphasized that defending the West Philippine Sea is a shared responsibility. “The WPS issue goes beyond politics and beyond social needs,” he said. “What’s at stake is our identity as Filipinos. Our independence was earned by heroes who gave their lives for this nation.”

His remarks came after a Chinese military ship was sighted near the Panata Islands on Friday. A Philippine Navy vessel issued a radio challenge, but the Chinese ship did not respond.

LTO PROBES 160 CLINICS OVER QUESTIONABLE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) has launched an investigation into 160 medical clinics nationwide over allegations of issuing medical certificates without conducting actual physical examinations.

In a statement, LTO Chief and Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the agency received reports that some LTO-accredited clinics have been issuing medical certificates under a “non-appearance” scheme.

“A medical certificate is a major requirement to get a driver’s license, and it is clear that some clinics are issuing them even without conducting medical checkups—as long as payment is made,” Mendoza said. “This is not right, and we will pursue those responsible.”

The probe was initiated following an order from Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who directed the LTO to prepare administrative and criminal charges against those involved, including physicians who allegedly signed off on the fraudulent certificates.

Dizon earlier vowed to intensify efforts to ensure road safety by cracking down on unfit motorists and improving road infrastructure.

According to Mendoza, the scheme poses a significant risk to public safety because drivers are being certified without undergoing proper health screenings.

“I have already ordered the respective regional directors to retrieve all the medical certificates issued by these clinics and to notify individuals who obtained their driver’s licenses through questionable certificates to explain their side,” he said.

“If evidence warrants, we will revoke the accreditation of these medical clinics and impose a lifetime ban on any future transactions with the LTO.”

Mendoza added that all 160 clinics under investigation will begin receiving show cause orders this week.

CSOLON TO MMDA: FIX FLAWED TRAFFIC INFRA BEFORE NCAP PLAN

AVITE Rep. Jolo Revilla on Saturday called on the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to fix malfunctioning traffic lights, restore faded road markings, and install visible signage before strictly implementing the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) across Metro Manila.

The lawmaker’s statement followed public outrage over a viral video showing a traffic light in Manila—reportedly along Abad Santos Avenue—abruptly shifting from green to red before the countdown timer had ended. The incident raised questions about the fairness of penalizing motorists for violations caused by faulty infrastructure.

“These are NCAP traps,” Revilla said, referring to unclear road markings, defective signals, and poorly placed or missing signs.

“We should not punish drivers for the government’s shortcomings. Before imposing fines under NCAP, the MMDA must first ensure that all traffic lights, signages, and especially road markings are clear, working, and visible at all times.”

Revilla added that discipline on the road must go hand-in-hand with reliable infrastructure. “Let’s be fair. Drivers want to follow the law, but if they can’t see lane dividers or are misled by faulty traffic lights, that’s not a violation — that’s entrapment.”

He urged the MMDA to audit all NCAP-monitored areas and prioritize immediate repairs and repainting. He also proposed a public reporting system to allow motorists to flag defective infrastructure without fear of retaliation.

“If NCAP is meant to make roads safer, let’s start by making them clearer,” Revilla emphasized.

Meanwhile, MMDA chair Don Artes met with representatives of Globe Telecom on Friday to discuss technological enhancements in

support of NCAP enforcement, which resumed on May 26.

Among the proposed measures are the creation of an MMDA user account, the development of both automated and manual online systems, and a database linked to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for better coordination and monitoring.

In addition, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced Thursday that motorists will soon be able to check their traffic violations—including NCAP-related offenses—and pay fines through the eGovPH app.

DICT Undersecretary David Almirol Jr. said they are integrating the MMDA’s NCAP monitoring system, the agency’s single ticketing platform, and the LTO’s Land Transporta-

tion Management System into the eGovPH app. The systems will be interconnected via the e-government data exchange platform (eGovDX), allowing for streamlined access to violation records and evidence such as images and video.

Artes highlighted that the NCAP, powered by artificial intelligence and closed-circuit television cameras, enhances traffic enforcement by automatically detecting violations such as illegal turns, disregarding signs, illegal parking, and number coding breaches. He noted that all flagged violations are still subject to human verification.

The MMDA and partner LGUs aim to use NCAP to promote road safety and discipline through consistent and technology-aided enforcement.

OMBUDSMAN ASKS CA TO QUASH TRO ON GARCIA’S SUSPENSION

OMBUDSMAN Samuel Martires has urged the Court of Appeals (CA) to nullify the temporary restraining order (TRO) it issued against the sixmonth preventive suspension of outgoing Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, arguing that the order had already been carried out before the TRO was issued, according to a GMA News report. In a motion filed on May 30 and obtained by GMA Integrated News on Saturday, Martires told the appellate court that the preventive suspension was implemented on April 29, more than two weeks before the TRO was issued on May 15.

Garcia was suspended without pay for six months by the Ombudsman over alleged grave abuse of authority in connection with her issuance of a special permit to a construction company. However, she continued to defy the order and secured a TRO from the Court of Appeals.

DMW VOWS CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR OFWS

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Saturday assured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) of the government’s continued support as the country marked the 30th Migrant Workers’ Day.

“We are here to support those dreams in far-off lands and seas… the whole nation and the government is here with you all the way,” DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said in a statement, emphasizing a rights-based approach in the agency’s programs for OFWs.

Cacdac said the Marcos administration has strengthened efforts against illegal recruitment and bolstered partnerships with host countries to better protect OFWs. The DMW also continues to extend welfare services through the AKSYON Fund and reintegration programs.

This year’s celebration includes the groundbreaking of the new DMW Central Office, a joint circular establishing the National Reintegration Network, and a memorandum of understanding with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

The Ombudsman contested the CA’s TRO, dismissing claims that the suspension would disrupt the delivery of public services in Cebu. “The implementation of this preventive suspension order will impede public service strains credulity,” the motion said. “To be sure, petitioner Garcia’s suspension will not disrupt the delivery of public services to the people of Cebu,” Martires argued, according to the GMA News report.

KABATAAN EXPELS MEMBER OVER MISCONDUCT

KABATAAN Party-list has expelled one of its members following allegations of sexual misconduct made public in a viral Facebook post earlier this week.

In a statement, the group said it had been aware of the incidents since April and immediately conducted an internal investigation. The accused member was barred from participating in any organizational activities during the probe.

Kabataan National President Julius Cariaga said the group is prepared to support the survivor should they decide to pursue legal action. “We fully support the possible filing of legal charges against said accused for remedies beyond the authority of the organization,” he said.

The party-list also provided mental health consultations and emotional support to the survivor and reaffirmed its commitment to accountability.

Kabataan admitted to lapses in enforcing gender-sensitive policies and pledged to strengthen internal safeguards moving forward.

REP. Luis Raymund Villafuerte has expressed optimism that Transportation Secretary Vivencio Dizon’s confirmation will finally lead to the implementation of long-delayed transport projects in the Bicol region.

Villafuerte said he is hopeful the modernization of Naga Airport and the Philippine National Railways-South Long Haul Railway project—also known as the “Bicol Express”—will soon begin after years of stagnation during the Aquino and Duterte administrations.

During his confirmation hearing, Dizon assured Villafuerte and other Commission on Appointments members that the Naga Airport upgrade would begin in September, and that the Department of Transportation would seek new international funding—possibly from the EU and France—for the railway project after talks with China collapsed in 2022. “He should have first discussed his contrary position with our party leadership, rather than go out in public and breach our unanimous party decision,’ Villafuerte added.

He said Frasco’s decision to go to the media to publicly oppose the party position, “especially without prior consultation with any of our party officers, is punishable with expulsion from the NUP.”

Nearly a month ago, the NUP declared its support for Romualdez’s leadership for the 20th Congress to keep on course the “Bagong Pilipinas” vision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“The NUP supports 100 percent the continuity of the Bagong Pilipinas agenda of President Marcos of better lives for all Filipinos in the second half of his presidency,” said Villafuerte.

“For the House to help stay the course of this pro-poor and progrowth vision in the Congress, it is crucial for Speaker Martin to remain at the helm of the bigger chamber to continue shepherding the passage of the priority bills of this administration meant to spell high, inclusive and sustainable growth.”

The House’s spokesperson, lawyer Princess Abante, said the leadership of the Lower Chamber respects the independence of each member.

“In the Lower Chamber, the principle is clear: support is not forced. It is a voluntary decision of each representative—and that is respected by our leadership,” Abante said.

She said a total of 285 incoming representatives, including four of the six Liberal Party (LP) members, in the 20th Congress have committed their support for the continuity of Romualdez’s leadership at the House of Representatives.

“Instead of responding to the political noise, our leader, Speaker Romualdez, will choose to stand in the silence of true service…It doesn’t matter who signs or who does not sign. What is more important is the overwhelming clamor to continue serving the public,” Abante said.

OS ANGELES —\]Masked and armed federal agents carried out sweeping immigration raids in Los Angeles Friday, while others pounced on migrants at a New York courthouse, in forceful displays of US President Donald Trump’s crackdown on people without papers.

From courthouses to hardware store parking lots in two of the most diverse cities in the world, federal agents wrestled migrants into handcuffs and unmarked vehicles.

Agents used extreme tactics, conducting unprecedented raids on at least three areas of Los Angeles to detain dozens of people.

At one sweep less than two miles from Los An-

geles City Hall, agents threw flash-bang grenades to disperse angry crowds of people following alongside a convoy of ICE vehicles, as protesters hurled eggs and epithets at the agents, media reported.

‘Terror’

“As a mayor of a proud city of immigrants, who contribute to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angered by what has taken place,” LA Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement.

“These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city.”

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who grew up in LA’s Santa Monica community, responded on X, insisting that Bass had “no say in this at all.”

“Federal law is supreme and federal law will be enforced.”

Service Employees International Union leader David Huerta was among those briefly detained in Los Angeles.

“Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals,” Huerta said in a statement after his release.

Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson

Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe told the Los Angeles Times that federal agents were executing search warrants related to the harboring of people illegally in the country.

As the sun set in Los Angeles, broadcaster ABC7 reported a growing standoff as hundreds of protesters marched downtown to demand the release of detainees, where police officers in riot gear ordered them to disperse.

NY courthouse arrests

Across the country in New York, US agents in plainclothes pounced on two immigrants in the hallway of a New York courthouse Friday.

AFP saw the officers yell for the men not to move before forcing them to lay face-down on the ground as they were cuffed and arrested.

It was not immediately clear exactly why these two men were arrested.

Trump was elected to a second term with broad support for his promise to crack down hard on the entry and presence of undocumented migrants. In recent weeks ICE agents have intensified such operations in and around American immigration courts.

TRUMP SAYS MUSK ‘LOST HIS MIND’ AS FEUD FALLOUT MOUNTS

WASHINGTON—US President Donald Trump said Friday that Elon Musk had “lost his mind” but insisted he wanted to move on from the fiery split with his billionaire former ally.

The blistering public break-up between the world’s richest person and the world’s most powerful is fraught with political and economic risks all round.

Trump had scrapped the idea of a call with Musk and was even thinking of ditching the red Tesla he bought at the height of their bromance, White House officials told AFP.

“Honestly I’ve been so busy working on China, working on Russia, working on Iran... I’m not thinking about Elon Musk, I just wish him well,”Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to his New Jersey golf club late Friday.

Earlier, Trump told US broadcasters that he now wanted to focus instead on passing his “big, beautiful” mega-bill before Congress – Musk’s harsh criticism of which had sparked their break-up.

But the 78-year-old Republican could not stop himself from taking aim at his South African-born friend-turned-enemy.

Student councils from San Beda University, including its Senior High School unit, said delaying the trial is a betrayal of justice and democratic integrity.

“To our fellow Filipinos, especially the youth and the academic community, now is not the time for silence… Let this be a moment of reckoning: Public office is a public trust, and the Constitution is a solemn promise and not an option of convenience,” the San Beda College of Arts and Science Student Council said.

The Benilde School of Diplomacy and Governance said the trial is about

to the tycoon.

Trump later told Fox News that Musk had “lost it.”

Just a week ago Trump gave Musk a glowing sendoff as he left his cost-cutting role at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after four months working there.

While there had been reports of tensions, the sheer speed at which their relationship imploded stunned Washington.

You mean the man who has lost his mind?... ... I’m not thinking about Elon Musk, I just wish him well.

-- US President Donald Trump

After Musk called Trump’s spending bill an “abomination” on Tuesday, Trump hit back in an Oval Office diatribe on Thursday in which he said he was “very disappointed” by the entrepreneur.

Trump’s spending bill faces a difficult path through Congress as it will raise the US deficit, while critics say

“greater good prevailing over partisan politics and blind idolatry.”

The PUP College of Political Science and Public Administration Student Council added: “Democracy doesn’t just die overnight—it’s chipped away by leaders who bend the rules, dodge accountability, and put loyalty over the law.”

The Ateneo School of Government warned that dispensing the case without the benefit of a trial is a “dereliction of duty and a clear attempt to whitewash the accusations raised against a public official.”

Similarly, the Ateneo School of Government Ateneo Human Rights Center said: “It must be stated plainly: by deliberately delaying the impeachment proceedings, the Senate is failing in its constitutional duty.

it will cut health care for millions of the poorest Americans.

The row then went nuclear, with Musk slinging insults at Trump and accusing him without evidence of being in government files on disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump hit back with the power of the US government behind him, saying he could cancel the Space X boss’s multi-billion-dollar rocket and satellite contracts.

Trump struck a milder tone late Friday when asked how seriously he is considering cutting Musk’s contracts.

“It’s a lot of money, it’s a lot of subsidy, so we’ll take a look -- only if it’s fair. Only if it’s to be fair for him and the country,” he said.

Musk apparently also tried to de-escalate social media hostilities.

The right-wing tech baron rowed back on a threat to scrap his company’s Dragon spacecraft -- vital for ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station. And on Friday the usually garrulous poster kept a low social media profile on his X social network. But the White House denied reports that they would talk. AFP

This is not merely a matter of scheduling. It is a matter of accountability, of constitutional integrity, and of the Senate’s credibility as an institution.”

The Philippine Law School Faculty said the impeachment is a non-legislative function that is now affected by changes in the Senate composition, while the Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) Board of Trustees stressed that in functioning democracy, “no public official, regardless of their popularity or political influence, is above scrutiny.”

Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico III commended the fisherfolk, PDEA, PCG and the Philippine National Police for the recovery of the illegal drugs.

the impeachment trial of Duterte. The Tindig Pilipinas coalition said an ecumenical gathering and people’s march will be launched on Monday from the Film Center to the Senate gate.

On Tuesday, June 10, a people’s vigil will be held at the Senate and on June 11 -- the day the Senate is expected to begin the trial of the Vice President – will be the “Day of Action for Truth and Accountability.”

The Senate received the Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives on February 5. Based on Senate President Francis Escudero’s proposed calendar, House prosecutors should have presented the articles of impeachment on June 2, but this was moved to June 11.

He also appealed for a deeper investigation to determine the sources of the contraband and punish those involved in the illegal drugs trade.

PDEA Pangasinan officer Rechie Camacho, in an interview Friday night, said law enforcement agencies are still determining the source of the illegal drugs.

He also appealed to the public to immediately report and turn over to authorities suspicious shipments they would find.

“Do not have second thoughts in surrendering floating objects like these. You will be rewarded by PDEA and other agencies,” he added.

YOUNG FISHER BUILDS THRIVING ENTERPRISE BUSINESS

THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Paolo

Quitaneg grew up in a family whose hopes and livelihood have always been tied to the sea.

For generations, the rich fishing grounds of Scarborough Shoal, locally known as Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal, off the coast of Zambales, sustained their way of life.

In 2012, everything changed when rising geopolitical tensions in the West Philippine Sea led to restrictions on access to the shoal, which Quitaneg once described as a “true paradise.”

For small-scale fishers like him, losing access to this fishing ground wasn’t just about smaller catches, it meant the collapse of a centuriesold livelihood.

Quitaneg and fellow fishers continued to venture into the area despite the risks. But foreign vessels increasingly patrolled the waters, and local boats were

often intercepted or warned off, sometimes even before reaching the shoal.

“Our last trip there was in 2024. We were immediately warned over the radio. There was fear and anxiety that our boat might get damaged. We never went back. Everyone here in Zambales felt the loss, it was our main source of income,” he recalled.

Safer way

While the country works on diplomatic efforts to ease maritime tensions, Quitaneg and his family found a safer alternative.

In 2022, they registered LIMVQS Enterprise—a small business focused on using payaos, fish aggregating devices made of simple materials like styrofoam, old tires and nets to draw fish closer to shore.

UNIONDIGITAL Bank (UD), the digital banking subsidiary of Union Bank of the Philippines, has launched the “Kaya Mo Movement”, a bold initiative to break barriers to financial inclusion and empower underserved Filipinos to take charge of their financial future.

The movement aims to reach the 37.6 million Filipino adults who remain unbanked, especially firsttime digital banking users such as sari-sari storeowners, ride-hailing drivers, daily wage earners, and informal workers.

“Kaya Mo is our promise to make financial inclusion real. We’re not just offering hope, we’re introducing products that help Filipinos take control of their money: from getting a loan when it matters, to saving for emergencies, to managing everyday expenses through a digital bank built for real life. Filipinos actually live, earn, and spend. Just to prove that kaya talaga ng Pilipino na umasenso,” said UD chief marketing officer Mike Magpily.

Launched at a recent event attended by ecosystem partners, fintech leaders, and grassroots advocates, the movement highlighted real stories from microentrepreneurs facing daily financial challenges.

Driving the movement is a suite of digital banking products tailored to the everyday needs of underserved Filipinos.

UD Save offers a basic savings account with no minimum balance or maintenance fees, while UD Time Deposit lets customers grow longterm savings with as little as P1,000, the lowest entry point of any digital bank in the country.

Placed around 15 nautical miles off the coast, these devices encourage fish to spawn and gather. After three weeks, the fish are harvested using large nets, without the need to enter contested waters.

Quitaneg’s family eventually acquired a fishing vessel to support their growing operation, which allowed them to sustain a steady catch and income.

Financial assistance

In 2024, Quitaneg turned to the Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) to scale its operations.

Through the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) Lending Program, implemented in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), he secured a loan to build 10 new payao units, each worth around P100,000.

With a low annual interest rate of just 2 percent, ACEF loans provide up to P1 million for farmers and fishers, and up to P5 million for cooperatives, associations and MSMEs.

“We were surprised. The staff were very friendly, they gave me good options, and guided me through the requirements. That’s what LANDBANK is like, they help you rise so you can build a better livelihood,” Quitaneg said.

In January 2025, their new payaos were deployed off the coast of Zambales.

Monthly catch increased from 16,000 kilograms to nearly 50,000 kg., enabling them to supply markets as far as Malabon, where

prices are more favorable.

With better earnings, the family saved enough to make a down payment on their first delivery truck, saving P25,000 per trip in rental costs.

This means they now retain more of their income to support their household and expand their business.

Community impact

Financial access helped transform LIMVQS Enterprise into a growing community-based enterprise, sustaining 36 local workers, hired as harvesters and porters, who no longer need to risk their lives at sea.

Local dealers across Zambales have also benefited from the steady fish supply, helping stabilize market prices and availability.

Even consumers in Metro Manila now enjoy fresh, affordable, and responsibly-sourced fish, thanks to Quitaneg’s initiative.

“I’m truly grateful to LANDBANK, the Department of Agriculture and our local government for endorsing and supporting us. Even though we come from the marginalized sector, you gave us your trust and support so we could recover and improve our livelihood,” he said.

Encouraged by the growth of his business, Quitaneg said that he intends to apply for a second loan after repaying the first to purchase another delivery truck and reach new markets in provinces such as Laguna.

He came to understand that when the tides turn, there’s always a path to progress.

HONDA is significantly evolving its

e:HEV two-motor hybrid system with the introduction of a next-generation architecture featuring advanced electric All-Wheel Drive (AWD). This development aims to enhance both environmental performance and the driving experience through heightened driver synchronization and sensory-rich technologies. The revamped system, encompassing engine and drive unit overhauls, will be implemented across small- and medium-sized models.

A core component of this advancement is a newly developed electric AWD system that utilizes a dedicated electric motor to drive the rear wheels. Unlike conventional mechanical AWD systems that distribute torque from a single power source, this

electric setup allows for independent and precise control of front and rear driving forces. This translates to more powerful initial acceleration and superior stability on slippery surfaces, whether starting, accelerating, or turning. The 50-kilowattclass rear drive unit, compatible with various models, leverages the inherent precision and responsiveness of electric motors to deliver an exhilarating and refined driving experience. Beyond performance, the electric AWD system offers significant packaging advantages. Eliminating the propeller shaft found in mechanical AWD allows for a flatter cabin floor, enhancing rear seat comfort. This design change also enables the relocation of the battery pack from under the cargo space to under a seat,

consequently increasing cargo capacity. Honda has refined its AWD control technology by leveraging the precise characteristics of electric motors. The system now offers more flexible and accurate driving force distribution, adapting to changes in tire ground contact load. During acceleration, more power is sent to the rear wheels as the load shifts, maximizing grip. Conversely, during deceleration, regenerative braking from the rear wheels complements front-wheel braking, maximizing energy recovery and stabilizing the vehicle’s posture by suppressing pitching. When cornering, the system intelligently increases driving force to the rear wheels, reducing the burden on the front, improving tire load balance, and enhancing vehicle stability.

HYUNDAI Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), the official distributor of Volvo in the Philippines, has partnered with De La Salle University (DLSU) to establish the Volvo Safety Labs, aiming to pilot realworld road safety innovations within local communities. The collaboration was formalized with a Memorandum of Understanding signed on May 30, 2025, at the Volvo Philippines office in Makati City. The signing took place during the inaugural Voice of Volvo forum, which gathered safety advocates from both the government and private sector to explore new strategies for safer mobility.

The Volvo Safety Labs will be located at the Richard L. Lee Engineering and Technology Block on the DLSU Laguna Campus, a facility established with support from HARI. This hub will serve as a center for students and researchers to develop and test solutions aimed at preventing road accidents.

This partnership is a cornerstone of Volvo Philippines’ new national campaign, “Volvo: Being Alive,” which strives for a future with zero traffic accidents. The campaign moves beyond vehicle-centric safety, promoting a culture of shared responsibility among all road users, including drivers, commuters, and pedestrians. “We envision a culture shift in the Filipino—to see ourselves as stewards of public transformation,” stated HARI President and CEO Maria Fe PerezAgudo. She emphasized that collective responsibility and collaboration are key to building a safer future.

Echoing this sentiment, DLSU Vice President for Research and Innovation, Prof. Raymond Girard R. Tan, said the project will challenge “brilliant minds at DLSU to push the boundaries of road safety and engineer solutions that make every Filipino ‘Volvo-safe.’”The “Being Alive” campaign will also feature public activities and academic forums to educate the public on their role

IN the quiet mountain town of Subiaco, just outside Rome, a race unlike any other unfolded—a test of endurance where the nish line doesn’t exist, and the only prize is survival.

Among the 146 determined runners from around the world stood a familiar figure, calm but focused, with Bib Number 1 pinned to his chest. For Jivee Tolentino, this wasn’t just another ultramarathon. It was a reunion, a reckoning, and a reminder of why he runs.

The 47-year-old Ilonggo, now living in Ireland, is no stranger to pain, persistence, and pushing beyond what most think is possible.

At the Backyard Ultra Livata, held from May 31 to June 2, he ran for 24 hours straight, covering 160.8 kilometers through extreme temperatures and total sleep deprivation—only to be marked, like almost everyone else, with a DNF: Did Not Finish. In this race, only one runner is left standing. Everyone else must eventually stop.

And yet, for Jivee, the magic lies not in the medal, but in the miles.

“I’m grateful to be part of Backyard Ultra Livata,” he shared before the race.

“I had to skip Australia for this, but it’s worth it to be with friends from Germany, the US, and others who share this passion.”

He arrived in Rome barely a day before the race, accompanied by his wife and personal crew, Olga. There was no time to rest, no moment to adjust. The race began, and so did the familiar rhythm of his feet on the trail—each loop a conversation with pain, each hour a dialogue with doubt.

The Backyard Ultra format is deceptively simple: runners must complete a 6.7-kilometer loop every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains. It is as much a mental game as it is physical. Temperatures soared during the day and dropped to 6°C at night, but Jivee pressed on, just as he always does.

His name is well known in the ultrarunning world. He holds the Philippine and Asian record for the Phidippides Ultra 490K, a legendary race from Athens to Sparta and back. And in 2023, he stunned the world by running 81 loops—543 kilometers—at the

Championships, earning him the 13th spot in the global rankings.

But behind the numbers lies a deeper motivation.

Jivee’s story is told in the bestselling biography Run to Live to Run by Maria Elena de Asia-Ner. It’s a journey not just of physical endurance, but of faith, healing, and hope—a reminder that the strongest runners are often the ones

carrying the most invisible weight.

In Livata, Jivee wasn’t the only Filipino on the trail. Running alongside him was Jacob How, a 43-year-old overseas worker from Bulacan who now lives in Rome with his family. Jacob managed to complete 14 loops (93.8 km), with help from his friends Randy and Keng Diwa, who served as his crew.

“I was just happy to run beside

legends like Jivee,” Jacob said with a smile.

“Their stories inspire me to keep moving, no matter what.”

As Jivee looks ahead to a possible return to the World Championships in Tennessee, he remains grounded. And through it all, Jivee keeps running— not toward a nish line, but toward something deeper.

A NEW generation of Filipino weightlifters is lifting national hopes sky-high as the country sets its sights on Olympic success in Los Angeles 2028.

Following a stellar showing at the 2025 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth and Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru, Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) President Monico Puentevella expressed con dence in the Philippines’ rising talents.

“We’re seeing the next generation of champions,” Puentevella said. “These young athletes are making waves internationally. People abroad are already saying we’ll win gold again in Los Angeles.” Among the brightest stars was Ian Albert de los Santos, an 18-year-old standout from Universidad de Zamboanga, who clinched gold in the men’s 67kg youth division. De los Santos shocked the eld by defeating 20-year-old Chinese favorite Yang Jinwen, lifting 51kg more than his previous best despite recently recovering from a back injury.

“Everyone’s talking about Ian’s lift,” Puentevella noted. “We want to see another Olympic gold for the Philippines.” De los Santos, already a former world champion at 61kg, is trained by Julius Naranjo, husband and coach of Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo.

Joining him in the medal tally was Alexsandra Ann Diaz of Zamboanga City, who captured two gold medals in the women’s 45kg snatch and total categories, along with a bronze in clean and jerk. Another standout was Althea Bacaro of Cebu, who brought home a gold medal in the women’s 40kg youth category. Meanwhile, Angeline Colonia, also from Zamboanga City, secured a silver in snatch and a bronze in total in the women’s 45kg junior division.

EAR CROPPING AND TAIL DOCKING: A LOOK AT THE PRACTICES

EAR cropping and tail docking are surgical procedures performed on dogs for various reasons, including aesthetics, breed standards, and perceived functional benefits. These practices have been historically common, but their ethical and welfare implications have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years.

Ear Cropping

Ear cropping, the surgical removal of a portion of the ear pinna, is a practice that has been debated for its ethical and practical implications. As mentioned in the article "Ear Cropping in Dogs: A Review of the Literature" by the AVMA, this procedure is typically performed on puppies between 6 and 12 weeks of age. The rationale for ear cropping often centers around breed standards, with some breeds historically having cropped ears as a defining characteristic.

However, the article of the AVMA titled "Ear Cropping in Dogs: A Review of the Literature" also highlights the potential for complications associated with ear cropping. These include infection, pain, and altered ear function. The procedure involves anesthesia and surgery, which can be risky for young puppies. Additionally, the healing process can be painful and uncomfortable for the dog.

Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that ear cropping improves a dog's hearing or protects them from injuries. Some argue that cropped ears can help to prevent ear infections, but this claim is not supported by research. In fact, some studies have shown that ear cropping can actually increase the risk of ear infections.

The practice of ear cropping has been chal-

lenged by animal welfare organizations, who argue that it is a cosmetic procedure that does not benefit the dog's health or well-being. Instead, they advocate for the acceptance of dogs with natural ears, promoting the idea that a dog's personality and character are more important than its appearance.

Tail Docking

Tail docking, the surgical removal of a portion of a dog's tail, is a practice that has been debated for decades. As noted in the article "Tail Docking in Dogs: A Review of the Literature" by the AVMA, this procedure is often performed on puppies between 2 and 5 days of age. The reasons for tail docking can vary, with some breeds historically having docked tails as a breed standard.

Some argue that tail docking can prevent injuries, particularly in working dogs, such as those used for herding or hunting. The theory is that a docked tail is less likely to be caught on objects or injured during work. However, as mentioned in the article "Tail Docking and Ear Cropping: What

You Should Know" by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), there is limited scientific evidence to support this claim.

Additionally, tail docking can potentially lead to complications such as infection, pain, and impaired communication signals. The procedure involves anesthesia and surgery, which can be risky for young puppies. The healing process can be painful and uncomfortable for the dog, and the procedure can also interfere with the dog's ability to communicate through tail movements.

The practice of tail docking has been challenged by animal welfare organizations who argue that tail docking is unnecessary and can actually harm the dog. Instead, they advocate for the acceptance of dogs with natural tails, promoting the idea that a dog's personality and character are more important than its appearance.

The Ethics of Ear Cropping and Tail

Docking: A Balancing Act

Both ear cropping and tail docking are considered cosmetic procedures by many

animal welfare organizations. As stated in the article "Tail Docking and Ear Cropping: What You Should Know" (SPCA Nevada, 2023), these procedures are often performed for purely aesthetic reasons, and they do not benefit the dog's health or well-being.

The ethical implications of these practices have become a major point of debate. Some argue that ear cropping and tail docking are forms of animal cruelty, as they involve inflicting pain and altering a dog's natural appearance.

Others argue that these practices are acceptable if performed by a qualified veterinarian and under appropriate anesthesia. They believe that if the procedure is performed safely and humanely, it can be justified for certain breeds or for functional reasons.

Alternatives

to Ear Cropping

and Tail Docking

There are alternatives to ear cropping and tail docking that can address the concerns associated with these practices. For instance, some breeders are working to develop breed standards that do not require ear cropping or tail docking.

Additionally, there are training methods that can help dogs learn to control their behavior without the need for tail docking. As stated in the article "Tail Docking and Ear Cropping: What You Should Know" by the SPCA, responsible dog ownership involves providing proper training and socialization to minimize the risk of behavioral problems.

As understanding of animal welfare continues to evolve, it is very important to consider the ethical implications of all practices that involve altering a dog's natural appearance or functionality.

A LIFELONG BOND: ANIMALS WHO MATE FOR LIFE

First of two parts

IN THE animal kingdom, relationships can be as diverse as the species themselves. While some animals engage in fleeting encounters, others forge enduring bonds, forming monogamous partnerships that last a lifetime. This commitment to a single mate, known as monogamy, is a fascinating aspect of animal behavior, offering insights into the complex social dynamics of the natural world.

The Many Forms of Monogamy Monogamy, in its purest form, involves a pair bond between two individuals who exclusively mate with each other for life. This type of monogamy, known as social monogamy, is observed in a variety of species, including birds, mammals, and fish. However, it is important to note that social monogamy does not always translate to sexual monogamy. While a pair may live and raise offspring together, they might still engage in extra-pair copulations. As mentioned in the article, "Monogamous Animals," written by National Geographic, some species, like the California Condor, are known for their strong pair bonds, often remaining together for decades, even after the death of one partner. This enduring commitment suggests a deep connection between the pair, even if it is not always driven by strict sexual exclusivity.

The Benefits of Monogamy

The evolution of monogamy in animals is a complex topic, with multiple theories attempting to explain its emergence. One prominent theory suggests that monogamy evolved as a strategy to ensure the survival of offspring. In some species, both parents are required to raise their young, and monogamy ensures that both partners are committed to providing care.

As noted in the article, "Five Animals That Mate for Life," by Discover Magazine, albatrosses, for example, form strong pair bonds and share the responsibility of incubating eggs

and raising chicks. This shared parental care increases the chances of offspring survival, contributing to the overall fitness of the species.

Albatrosses, with their impressive wingspans and long-distance migratory flights, face unique challenges in raising their young. Both parents are essential for the survival of their single chick, as they take turns incubating the egg and providing food for the growing chick. This shared responsibility, facilitated by their monogamous bond, ensures the chick's survival and the continuation of the species.

The benefits of monogamy extend beyond

the realm of parental care. In some species, monogamous relationships can provide benefits in terms of territorial defense, resource acquisition, and social stability. These benefits, combined with the increased survival rates of offspring, have likely played a significant role in the evolution of monogamy in various animal species.

Beyond Reproduction:

The Role of Social Bonds

While reproductive benefits play a significant role in the evolution of monogamy, social bonds can also be a driving force. In some species, monogamous relationships provide benefits beyond reproduction, fostering cooperation and social stability within a group.

As discussed in the article, "Do Animals Fall in Love," by Discover Magazine, gibbons are known for their strong pair bonds, which contribute to the stability of their social groups. These bonds help to maintain order and reduce conflict within the troop, promoting harmony and cooperation.

CRAVINGS VINGS

BANGKOK—FILIPINO food exporters made global waves at THAIFEX – Anuga Asia 2025, with some companies closing international deals before the first day of the trade show even wrapped up.

At the heart of the action were 22 companies under the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization (PhilFoodex), which returned to Bangkok with a bigger presence and a bolder mission – to show that Philippine products aren’t just delicious, they’re export-ready.

“I think the Philippines definitely is one of our long-standing partners. [at THAIFEX]. We don't even treat them as our customers – they are really our partners,” said Lynn How, project director of THAIFEX - Anuga Asia 2025.

“So, over the years, we also see their participation has been growing in terms of the size. When I started, it used to be 63 or 72 [meters]. Today, it's probably more than 200 square meters that is supported by PhilFoodex. So, this year, they brought in

about 22 companies,” she added.

The scale-up is already paying off. One Filipino exhibitor reportedly secured a deal with a Hong Kong buyer within hours of the show’s ribbon cutting.

“The shipment is already scheduled for next week,” How said, adding that the early success has motivated the company to request more space next year.

Organizers said THAIFEX – Anuga Asia isn’t just about scale—it’s about innovation.

Fisher Farms, one of this year’s Taste Innovation Award winners, caught the spotlight with its ready-to-eat corn and coconut breaded shrimp, a product that blends local flavors with global appeal.

“Filipino brands are stepping up not just with traditional offerings like dried mangoes, but with creative, health-conscious

GOOD Life has introduced new packaging across its product line, bringing a refreshed look that mirrors the premium quality Filipinos know and love.

The sleek, cohesive design, highlighted by a distinctive gold ribbon, reflects the brand’s commitment to sophistication, perfectly aligned with its exceptional quality, shared Kristine Domingo, Senior Brand Manager of Good Life.

“We’re proud to unveil our new and refreshed packaging, which has been met with positive response,” she said.

“Beyond the new look, what truly matters is that we continue to deliver the same high-quality ingredients Filipino families rely on. Good Life brand believes in always inspiring and enabling home cooks to prepare abundantly for their family as a way of giving them The Good Life,” Domingo added.

Whether you are preparing lunch, dinner, or a quick snack, Good Life helps turn simple recipes into flavorful experiences, because with the right ingredients, every meal can be a celebration.

Good Life has long been a trusted name in Filipino kitchens, offering a wide range of Asian products made from rich, quality ingredients preferred by chefs and home cooks.

From flavorful pancit to saucy, hearty stir-fry dishes, the brand continues to empower home cooks to prepare a wide variety of delicious Asian dishes as a way to show the abundance of life and love for their family.

FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL: PH BRANDS ON THE SPOTLIGHT AT ASIA’S BIGGEST FOOD EXHIBITION

food products designed for export markets,” said Wendy Lim, general manager of THAIFEX - Anuga Asia 2025.

Another returning local brand, Oh So Healthy—makers of vegan, Halal-certified fruit snacks—also continued to gain traction in markets like Singapore. The company’s parent, Innovative Packaging Industry, was among previous awardees for product innovation.

THAIFEX – Anuga Asia 2025 hosted 3,231 exhibitors from 57 countries and expects to welcome over 90,000 trade visitors during its run. With 60 percent of participants from outside Thailand, the show has become a global sourcing hub for food and beverage innovation.

Despite the growth, space remains limited. Organizers confirmed a long waitlist for 2026— but offered some hope.

“We’re adding a 12th hall next year. We want to give returning partners like the Philippines more room, while still opening doors for new countries and emerging markets,” Lim shared.

As the food landscape continues to evolve, so too does the presence of Filipino exporters— turning regional exposure into global opportunity.

THEY say that necessity is the mother of invention.

In the case of Gyu Don Ten, the latest stall at the Gyud Food Hub at UP Diliman, the owner’s 22-year-old son, Rafa, missed the taste of authentic beef rice bowl from their visits to the Land of the Rising Sun.

“Our family would visit Japan about five times a year,” said Chef Chicklette Keyser. “My son Rafa would always complain that the gyudon available here is too sweet for his taste.”

“So, we thought, why not open our own gyudon stall,” she added.

Chef Chicklette is no stranger to inventions borne out of necessity.

During the pandemic, she got bored and decided to open Rafa’s Kitchen, which became a hit online with its Hainanese Chicken Rice and Bagnet Kare-Kare. And in the case of her son Rafa, well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

With Gyu Don Ten, the Keysers pitched the concept to fellow foodie and entrepreneur Jose Magsaysay, and the partnership led to the latest kiosk at the al fresco area of Gyud Food.

“Gyudon is my favorite food. It is one of Japan’s staples,” said Rafa. “After multiple trips to Japan, we were looking for that real Japanese taste in Manila and somehow, we could not find it. It was either a fusion or the taste and flavors were localized.”

At Gyu Don Ten, there’s gyudon of course, in three sizes – mini, regular and large; miso soup, chicken karaage, and Japanese potato salad, among others.

“Gyu Don Ten is chasing authenticity. We don’t want to water down or sweeten the flavor for the Filipino market… We want our customers to feel like they’re eating in Japan – no ticket needed,” he added.

SEVEN BTS SONGS TO LISTEN TO

LAST Thursday night, I was scrolling through an e-commerce platform to see what I could get myself for the mid-year sale. I paused after spotting a markdown of almost ₱600 on a BTS’ biography book, Beyond The Story, I’d been eyeing for over a year. Of course, I hit the checkout.

With only a week left before RM, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jungkook return from their military service—and with Jin and j-hope already discharged and busy spoiling us with Festa content, it feels like the perfect time to treat myself. June 13 is just around the corner, and with it comes not only BTS’ 12th anniversary but the start of a long-awaited new chapter for ARMYs around the world.

If you’re like me constantly caught between excitement and nostalgia, you might find comfort in the music that’s carried us through these quiet years. As I wait (and try not to cry every time a military discharge date gets closer), I’ve been playing these seven BTS songs on repeat. Each one hits differently now, and together, they feel like a warm hug from the boys we’ve missed so much.

“00:00 (Zero O’Clock)”

A song that feels like starting fresh. Whenever life feels overwhelming, this track reminds me that “you’re gonna be happy,” eventually. It’s soft, sincere, and quietly hopeful, just like the moments of healing BTS has always given us.

“2! 3!” For me, this song is practically

an ARMY anthem. It’s BTS saying they wish they could take away our pain—and haven’t they, in so many ways? Listening to it now, I’m reminded of how they’ve stayed with us through every high and low, even from afar.

“Butterfly”

Delicate, bittersweet, and emotional—”Butterfly” has taken on new meaning for me during the group’s enlistment period. The fear of change, the desire to hold on, and the fragile hope that things will stay beautiful all come through in every note. It feels like a love letter to

the idea of staying connected even while apart.

“Just One Day”

Sometimes I laugh at how I can sing the Korean lyrics to this song almost fluently even though I don’t speak Korean. But that’s what BTS does: they make you feel the language. This one brings me back to simpler eras of the fandom, when the wish to spend “just one day” with them was all we needed to keep going.

“Magic Shop”

Whenever I feel overwhelmed, “Magic Shop” becomes my escape. The song feels like BTS reaching

out with open arms, saying, “It’s okay, you’re not alone.” The lyrics offer comfort and reassurance, like a warm embrace from someone who just gets it. The line “So show me (I’ll show you)” is more than a lyric—it’s a promise of mutual healing, a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there’s a place where we’re understood and accepted.

“Permission to Dance” This might sound cliché, but “Permission to Dance” reminds me that joy is a choice, even when it feels like the world is standing still. And if you listen closely, the song says it

all: “The wait is over.” I know that line is symbolic, but right now, it feels like a promise.

“We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal”

No list would be complete without this. It’s the kind of song that makes me ugly cry every time. The line “we are only seven with you” hits harder than ever. It’s a reminder that this journey has always been about us—BTS and ARMY, side by side. Always.

The countdown is real now. After three years of solo releases and livestreams, we’re finally here—on the cusp of seeing BTS as seven again.

STUDENTS EARN INTERNATIONAL

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE CERTIFICATION

FOUR students from the Architecture Program of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) have passed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate exam, a globally recognized credential that assesses general knowledge of green building principles.

Joshua Ramos Harvin John Castanares Simon Lim, and Maree Charlize Jimenez, all from Benilde’s School of Environment and Design (SED), obtained the

certification after volunteering for the assessment under the Building Technology 5 (BLDTEC5) course.

The class is taught by architect Alvin Tejada, a licensed U.S. Green

Building Council (USGBC) faculty member.

Tejada said the accomplishment is a key milestone for emerging professionals in architecture, as it confirms their understanding of sustainability strategies and environmentally responsible design.

“It opens doors to a growing field focused on environmentally conscious design, offering opportunities to work on high-impact projects that reduce energy consumption, lower carbon footprints, and improve overall building performance,” he said.

COMFORT DRIVES FASHION CHOICES IN HOT URBAN CITIES

COMFORT is becoming a key factor in everyday fashion choices, par ticularly in hot and humid cities like Metro Manila and Bangkok, accord ing to a new survey by Uniqlo and global research firm Dynata.

The AIRism Survey, which gathered responses from over 7,000 people across multiple cities, found that 86 per cent of urban commut ers are struggling with unpredictable weather, with many prioritizing breathable, lightweight, and quick-drying cloth ing to cope with the heat.

In Bangkok, where con ditions mirror those of Metro Manila, 82 percent of respondents cited concerns over feeling sticky, and 79 percent worried about vis ible sweat stains. Around 80 percent reported heat-related issues, such as headaches and poor sleep, while 42 percent said clothing discomfort negatively affected their work per formance.

This shift is prompting con sumers to build “mono-seasonal” wardrobes with versatile, func tional clothing. The survey

He added that as the demand for green buildings continues to grow, architects with LEED credentials are increasingly being sought by firms. The certification enhances professional credibility and aligns careers with international sustainability standards.

“LEED accreditation not only enhances an architect’s credibility but also aligns their career with global sustainability standards, showcasing their commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable built environments,” Tejada said.

As part of the course, green building science was integrated to expose students to sustainable design and performance-based assessments.

The BLDTEC5 course encourages the use of alternative systems and ecofriendly practices, focusing on energy efficiency, resource conservation, and human health.

To prepare for the LEED Green Associate exam, students underwent a 16-module lecture series led by architect Alvin Tejada, using official USGBC materials. The program included step-by-step guidance and interactive activities, adaptable for various learning formats.

The LEED Green Associate credential, administered by the USGBC, serves as an entry-level certification for professionals involved in sustainable building practices.

LIFE Young

ARE YOUNG FILIPINOS DONE WITH ONLINE DATING?

WHILE global data points to dating app fatigue among younger generations, recent figures from Viber Dating show young Filipinos are still actively seeking connections online.

A 2024 Forbes Health report indicated that 80 percent of millennials and 79 percent of Gen Z users reported feeling burned out by dating apps, with many citing ghosting, failed connections, and misleading profiles as key frustrations. However, new data from Rakuten Viber’s in-app feature Viber Dating suggests a contrasting trend in the Philippines.

Since launching in the country in February 2025, Viber Dating has recorded strong engagement from Filipino users, particularly young professionals aged 25 to 30. The company said users typically begin chatting within 1.7 days of creating a profile, and 92 percent initiate conversations within 60 seconds of matching.

AIRism line adapts for urban professionals with comfort, breathability, and functionality

showed 78 percent prefer sweatabsorbent and quick-drying fabrics, and 42 percent consider moisture-wicking features when shopping for innerwear. Additionally, 38 percent opt for timeless styles over trenddriven fashion to reduce environmental impact.

According to a report, 80% of millennials and 79% of Gen Z users feel burned out by dating apps

Launched in 2012, Uniqlo’s AIRism line has evolved over 13 years to meet the changing needs of city life. The innerwear is made with ultrafine polyester fibers—about one-tenth the thickness of human hair—that dry faster than cotton, wick moisture, neutralize odor, and offer a smooth, cool touch. The fabric is produced at the Toray factory in Ishikawa, Japan, and undergoes rigorous testing to ensure performance in high-heat urban environments. The Japanese apparel brand said its AIRism line continues to adapt, combining comfort, breathability, and functionality for urban professionals navigating rising temperatures and fast-paced routines. The platform, which aims to offer a more secure and private dating experience, also reported a balanced 1:1 ratio of male to female users—an uncommon finding in dating apps, which are often male-dominated. Viber said users in the Philippines receive several matches per week on average.

“Viber Dating has already empowered many young Filipinos to find genuine connections and embrace online dating once again—all because we have provided them a safer and convenient dating experience,” said David Tse, senior director at Rakuten Viber APAC.

The launch followed focus group discussions with Filipino users, who expressed a desire for meaningful interactions with real people while maintaining privacy. To address these concerns, Viber Dating requires profile creation through verified Viber accounts, hides all phone numbers, and keeps dating profiles separate from users’ main accounts.

The company said the feature will be introduced in other markets soon.

HOSPITALITY

ICORON’S SUSTAINABLE PARADISE

N the heart of Palawan’s breathtaking landscapes, Discovery Coron is setting a new standard for eco-friendly hospitality, thanks to the pioneering efforts of EcoConserve leaders headed by Joegil Magtanggol Escobar (hotel manager) and by Michael Joshua Wong, MD OH (resort doctor/EHS&S manager), and his dedicated sustainability team.

I spoke with Dr. Josh Wong about their sustainability efforts. He stressed the need for stronger conservation in Palawan and highlighted the resort’s initiatives, including coral and sea turtle conservation, tree planting, clean-ups, education programs, and partner-

ships with government and NGOs. Discovery Coron protects marine life through a 200-meter marine protected area, managed with the Philippine Coast Guard and PNP Maritime Group. Efforts include coral reef rehab, fish surveys, sea turtle tagging,

IHG PHILIPPINES INTEGRATES PLANT-BASED OPTIONS TO ENRICH HOSPITALITY

IHG Hotels & Resorts properties across the Philippines have committed to increasing plant-based food offerings to 30 percent of all menu items by 2027, a move recognized by international NGO Lever Foundation as a significant step toward more sustainable hospitality practices.

The pledge spans multiple IHG locations in the country, including Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Holiday Inn & Suites Manila Galleria, Holiday Inn Cebu City, Holiday Inn & Suites Makati, and Holiday Inn & Suites Batangas Lima Park. The initiative applies to restaurants, room service, and banquet menus.

Implementation timelines vary across properties, with some targeting full rollout as early as 2025. Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn & Suites Manila Galleria are set to meet the goal by 2025, aligning with IHG’s global “Journey to Tomorrow” sustainability program.

“This reflects our commitment to responsible dining and meeting the preferences of today’s conscious travelers,” said Patria Puyat, cluster general manager for the two Ortigas-based hotels.

In Cebu, Holiday Inn general manager Gibeth Gloria said the shift to plant-based menus is part of the hotel’s accelerated sustainability roadmap.

“This allows us to reduce our ecological footprint while enhancing culinary offer-

ings,” she said.

At Holiday Inn & Suites Makati, general manager Andy Belmonte said the 2027 target supports guest well-being and environmental responsibility.

“Great hospitality is about caring for people through the choices we offer,” he said.

Holiday Inn & Suites Batangas Lima Park is also advancing the initiative under the leadership of executive chef Mike Santiago. Hotel manager Mariesol Saballa said the move formalizes long-standing efforts to promote healthier food choices.

Lever Foundation praised the hotel group’s move as one of the most comprehensive plantbased policies by a major hospitality brand in the Philippines.

“This is meaningful progress toward a thoughtful, forward-looking guest experience,” said Marielle Lagulay, the group’s sustainability program manager.

Studies cited by the group show plant-based proteins produce up to 90 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions and require significantly less land and water than animal proteins. They also contribute to lower food waste, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

and monitoring dugongs and seagrass habitats.

The resort’s conservation model includes community involvement and cultural preservation, promoting sustainable practices and traditional ties to the marine environment for longterm ecological balance.

Discovery Coron supports local communities through employment, sustainable sourcing, and social initiatives. With 70 percent of staff from Palawan, the resort boosts local livelihoods and sources handmade goods and produce from nearby artisans and farmers.

The resort runs livelihood programs like “Bilin nga Ani” and “Adopt a Biik” to support local farmers, while also prioritizing education through school partnerships, donation drives, and the “Cheers for Chairs” initiative. These efforts, in collaboration with local governments, reflect its commitment to long-term prosperity in Coron. No easy feat, Discovery Coron masterfully strikes a harmonious balance between luxury tourism and environmental responsibility.

“Sustainability is woven into every aspect of our guest experience. From eco-friendly design to thoughtful ser-

vice, we strive to deliver a high-end experience that respects and enhances the environment. Every operational decision considers its environmental footprint,” said Dr. Wong. There are several upcoming sustainability initiatives that align with their commitment to environmental responsibility. A key focus will be the installation of solar panels across Discovery properties, allowing them to harness renewable energy and reduce their reliance on traditional power sources. This move will not only lower operational costs but also significantly decrease their carbon footprint. Future expansions will follow green building practices, using energy-efficient designs and eco-friendly materials. The team also plans to roll out sustainability programs aligned with Discovery’s global standards, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and responsible growth.

As travelers and stakeholders increasingly value sustainability, Discovery Coron’s efforts serve as a powerful reminder that every step toward a greener future counts. With continued dedication, the resort is paving the way for a world where exploration and preservation thrive together.
