CCP holds 1st Manila Int’l Performing Arts Summit
HILIPPINE alternative rock legend and songwriting ace Rico Blanco recently assigned some his bestknown songs to Viva Music Publishing. His hit songs including “Liwanag sa Dilim,” “Your Universe,” “Wag Mong Aminin,” and “Antukin,” to name a few are now under the music publishing company’s care.
Rico Blanco is acknowledged in the record industry as one of the biggest songwriters of his generation. His songs have been some of the most played and most-covered during his active days with Rivermaya. Until today the tunes that he wrote in the mid to late ‘90s and early aughts are still being re-discovered by a new generation. For instance, “241” – a song he wrote when he was still with Rivermaya – was one of the major driving songs for the hit movie 100 Tula Para Kay Stella when it was re-recorded by Janine Tenoso and was used in the film’s official soundtrack. Blanco’s “Ulan” and “Balisong,” on the other hand, have found its way into recently released films as accompanying theme songs. Viva Music Publishing, Inc. will, in effect, be the music manager of Blanco’s catalog for the next several years. Alex Camurungan, Publishing and Digital Music Manager for VMPi said: “We are excited at the many possibilities that having Rico Blanco’s songs give us. We’ll make sure that each song is taken care of and used in creative ways.” As one of Vic Del Rosario’s companies, Viva Music Publishing, Inc. gets first dibs in suggesting songs to every movie that Viva Films produces and distributes. VMPi assured that Rico Blanco’s considerable song catalog will definitely find its way into the movies. More likely re-recorded by Boss Vic’s roster of talented singers and bands.

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines will host the first Manila International Performing Arts Summit (MIPAS) on Sept. 19 to 22. Bringing together the arts and business sectors from Asia Pacific and other parts of the world, the multi-platform summit aims to leverage excellent performing arts productions and talents in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific Region, as well as raise awareness and broaden the market internationally. Under the summit, there will be three flagship events–the Federation of Asian Cultural Promotions (FACP) Conference; the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centre (AAPPAC) Conference and the Manila International Performing Arts Market (MIPAM) + CREATE Philippines. From Sept. 19 to 20, the FACP Conference gathers content providers and art stakeholders from the Asian region. Established in 1981, FACP aims to promote intra-Asian cultural exchanges and facilitate international touring of artists. This conference provides a platform for the members of FACP to exchange ideas and discuss issues concerning the entertainment and arts industries in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also a way to forge greater cooperation among members. Meanwhile, the MIPAM + CREATE Philippines, a global platform for performances and business-to-business exchanges, will take place on on Sept. 19 to 21. In partnership with DTI-CITEM, the platform invites international performing groups and festival organizers, as well as local and international promoters, producers and agents from FACP, AAPPAC and CREATE Philippines. On Sept. 20 to 22, the AAPPAC Conference gathers management executives and presenters from leading performing arts venues in the Asia Pacific region to chart out strategies fostering greater public appreciation and demand for the performing arts. Resource speakers and panelists, who are experts in their fields, will discuss topics such as cultural diplomacy, arts philanthropy, smart technology, partnerships between the academe and the performing arts centers, the rise of small, independent performing arts spaces and the rise of arts and culture districts and how it enlivens city economies during the three-day conference. The MIPAS is made possible through the partnerships with the Department of Trade and Industry–Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM), Department of Tourism (DOT), Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and CNN Philippines.
