JETS FROM SOKOR

THE Philippines acquired 12 FA-50

Block 70 light combat jets from Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. (KAI) of South Korea as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines modernization program, the Department of National Defense said Saturday.

Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said a Notice to Proceed was issued earlier this month, formalizing the contract valued at over $700 million.

The comprehensive package includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system.

“Its acquisition marks a significant enhancement to the country’s air defense capabilities and aligns with the DND’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept,” Andolong said.

The delivery of the aircraft will be carried out in phases over the next five years, with full completion targeted by 2030.

“The acquisition underscores the Philippine government’s continued commitment to national defense and further strengthens bilateral defense cooperation with the Republic of Korea,” Andolong added.

The Korea-made combat jet represents the latest evolution of the FA-50 platform, featuring advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and extended operational range.

The Philippine Air Force said proposals to acquire additional FA-50s are under Rehorizon 3 of the modernization initiative.

DMW MIDEAST OFFICES ON HEIGHTENED ALERT

PH READIES POSSIBLE EVAC PLAN AMID IRAN-ISRAEL UNREST

THE Department of Migrant Workers placed all its offices in the Middle East on heightened alert following orders from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to protect the welfare of over 2 million Filipinos working in the region as tensions between Israel and Iran continue to escalate.

Undersecretary Bernard Olalia on Saturday said the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are ready to respond should the conflict spread, including the possible evacuation of overseas Filipino workers if necessary.

This as Israel’s defense minister warned Saturday that “Tehran will burn” and its residents pay dearly if Iran continues its missile strikes against Israeli civilians.

“If (Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles toward the Israeli home front – Tehran will burn,” minister Israel Katz said. Olalia said the DMW is closely monitoring the situation not just in Israel and Iran, but across the entire region.

“The Department of Migrant Workers is now on heightened alert. All front offices, especially the Migrant Offices in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and other countries in the Middle East, because they are affected by the unrest,” he said. Labor attachés and staff have been placed on 24-hour duty, all

leaves have been suspended, and emergency hotlines have been activated for continuous operations, he added.

The government said it remains in close coordination with embassies and partner agencies in the Middle East.

The Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv has activated its crisis management team to enable quick response amid the developing security situation in the Middle East.

“The Embassy urges the Filipino community to follow the Israel Defense Force Home Front Command’s security guidelines and the Embassy’s safety advisories, as well as to be alert and ready to act,” the embassy said.

For emergency assistance, the Philippine Embassy in Israel may be reached 24/7 at its emergency hotline at +972 54 4661188 and email address: telaviv.pe@dfa.gov.ph.

The Department of Foreign Affairs earlier said no Filipino has been reported hurt in the trade of air strikes between Iran and Israel.

Based on the latest DFA data, there are 30,742 Filipinos in Israel and at least 1,180 in Iran, most of whom are

DOH : MEDICAL CHECKUP FOR FIRST-TIME SCHOOLERS

THE Department of Health will kick off routine medical screenings for first-time students as public schools reopen on June 16, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said Saturday.

The screenings, which will begin next week in various public schools, aim to identify early signs of nutrition deficiencies, vision problems, and hearing issues among first-time enrollees.

The initiative was announced during a DOH road safety awareness event in

Pasay City. “During Brigada Eskwela, we focused on checking teachers’ health. Now that classes are starting, we’re shifting our attention to first-time schoolers,” Herbosa said.

The health department is also gearing up for its school-based immunization program, scheduled to begin in October. The vaccines, which include tetanus-diphtheria and HPV for young girls, are part of the DOH’s continuing efforts to safeguard students from preventable diseases.

“These vaccines are part of the regular immunization schedule for schoolaged children, just as there are crucial vaccines during the first 1,000 days of life,” Herbosa said. Herbosa also urged DepEd to offer healthy food in school canteens and to limit processed snacks.

He said he discussed regulating unhealthy school food with DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, promoting better nutrition like Japan’s nutritionist-planned meals.

ICC PROSECUTORS TO RESPOND TO RODY INTERIM RELEASE PLEA

THE prosecution handling the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte is set to respond before the International Criminal Court (ICC) to his request for interim release to an unnamed foreign country.

Duterte’s legal counsel claims the country has agreed to receive him.

In a statement, the ICC Office of the Prosecutor said it would file a response before Pre-Trial Chamber I addressing the defense’s assertion that the prosecution had no objection to the interim release, provided that specific conditions outlined in an annex are met.

Duterte, 80, is facing charges of crimes against humanity in connection with thousands of drug warrelated killings during his tenure as Davao City mayor and as Philippine president. His lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, said the unnamed country expressed its willingness to host Duterte and enforce the court’s conditions while he awaits trial.

The request argues Duterte is not a flight risk and does not meet the conditions for further pre-trial detention under Article 58(1)(b) of the Rome Statute. Kaufman said Duterte should be released “immediately,” citing the cooperating country’s commitment to ensure his presence in court and compliance with all conditions.

While Duterte’s defense asserts that the prosecution has confirmed its non-opposition, the application remains controversial. The ICC has never granted interim release in any crimes against humanity case in its

CEBUPAC BOMB THREAT DISRUPTS

ZAMBOANGA

AIRPORT OPERATIONS

ZAMBOANGA International Airport (ZIA) temporarily suspended operations on Saturday, following a bomb threat involving Cebu Pacific flight 5J851 from Manila.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), a cabin crew member discovered a note with the message “may bomba” (there is a bomb) in one of the aircraft’s lavatories after passengers had disembarked around 8:20 a.m.

The flight attendant alerted ground security, triggering aviation security protocols. The Aviation Security Unit conducted a full sweep of the aircraft and the airport’s Passenger Terminal Building, but no explosives were found.

Operations at the airport resumed shortly after authorities declared the situation under control. All passengers were cleared and flights resumed without further delays.

CAAP spokesperson Bea Bernardo reminded the public that bomb threats are punishable under Presidential Decree No. 1727 and emphasized the agency’s commitment to swift and serious responses to threats, in line with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon. PARTY-LIST LAWMAKER BACKS P20 PER KILO RICE PROPOSAL

A PARTY-LIST LAWMAKER has expressed full support for House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez’s push to make P20-per-kilo rice permanently available to Filipinos.

Agri Party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee said the proposal aligns with House Bill No. 9020 or the “Cheaper Rice Act,” which aims to make affordable rice sustainable while providing stronger support to local farmers.

Lee emphasized that increasing farmer income through higher palay buying prices—between P5 to P10 above market rates— would encourage production and eventually bring down rice prices for consumers.

In addition to HB 9020, Lee is also pushing for more post-harvest facilities, stronger market linkages, and more Kadiwa centers nationwide through separate legislative measures. Maricel V. Cruz

E-GOVERNANCE ACT SEEN TO STREAMLINE PUBLIC SERVICE

HOUSE ICT Committee Chair and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said the passage of the E-Governance Act will speed up government services and simplify procedures through a unified digital system.

The proposed law is among President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s priority measures and aims to establish an Integrated Government Network (IGN) to interconnect all government websites and applications.

Tiangco said the IGN will eliminate redundant steps and promote faster, more responsive services while fostering a digitally empowered government.

The bill also aims to boost transparency and accountability, with digital records enabling citizens to access information and monitor government activities.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will lead implementation, ensuring uniform technical standards across agencies. Tiangco said this transformation is vital in building a globally competitive “Bagong Pilipinas.” Maricel V. Cruz

Lawyer Kristina Conti, who represents victims’ families, said the chances of approval are “50-50” depending on the receiving country’s proximity to The Hague and its ability to ensure Duterte’s compliance.

However, the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) strongly opposed the application, citing the victims’ rights and risks to public safety.

Human rights groups and relatives of drug war victims also voiced concern, saying Duterte’s release could allow him

to evade accountability or incite further harm. Activist group Rise Up for Life and for Rights said the application has caused distress and insecurity among victims’ families.

Former Bayan Muna representative Neri Colmenares warned that the defense had submitted a separate set of proposed conditions (Annex B), which could complicate proceedings. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing justice and victim safety over Duterte’s convenience.

COMELEC SAYS RANDOM MANUAL AUDIT SHOWS 99.997% ACCURACY

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported that the ongoing random manual audit (RMA) of the May 12 midterm elections has yielded a 99.997 percent accuracy rate based on 723 out of 763 selected precincts.

“Of the 723 ballot boxes that are part of the random manual audit, the accu-

racy of our machine stands at 99.997% when compared to the manual counting results,” said Comelec Chairman George Garcia.

“A 100-percent result is unrealistic. If such a result occurred, it should raise suspicions. The ‘point something’ [rates] are observed in all elections,” he explained.

Comelec is expected to finalize the audit statistics by Monday.

He noted that the RMA accuracy for the 2022 elections was 99.94 percent. Garcia acknowledged that minor discrepancies reported by the audit committee were due to missing or surplus ballots and incorrect precinct submissions. However, he clarified that these issues did not affect the overall outcome of the elections.

MIAA JOINS ‘BALIK ESKWELA’ WITH SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATIONS

THE Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has joined the nationwide Oplan Balik Eskwela 2025 efforts as classes for School Year 2025–2026 open on Monday, June 16.

In support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for greater community involvement in education, MIAA— through its Lingap Kapwa Task Force—

distributed 140 school bags and 500 bottles of drinking water to Rivera Village Elementary School and Rogelio Gatchalian Elementary School. The donated school bags were sourced from unclaimed lost-andfound items that had been turned over to MIAA, following guidelines from Memorandum Circular No. 05, Series of 2021. The initiative seeks to repurpose recovered items that have remained unclaimed over time.

“This is more than just a donation; it’s a message of solidarity with our students, teachers, and families as they prepare for the start of the school year,”

CARD CENTER FOR RESIDENTS

THE Makati City government has inaugurated a dedicated Makatizen Card Center on the ground floor of City Hall’s main building to streamline services for residents and city workers.

Mayor Abigail Binay said the facility will serve as a one-stop shop for online applications, virtual card generation, card replacement, inquiries, and card releasing.

The Makatizen Card, first launched in 2017, integrates various city-provided health and social benefits, including those under the Blu Card and PWD Card programs.

Senior citizens can use the virtual card to watch free movies at partner cinemas, while cash gifts under the Blu Card program are disbursed through the card’s GCash app.

The center is designed to make the application process easier, especially for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

From January to May 2025, over 16,900 Makatizen card applications were recorded, and 9,092 cards have been issued.

Additionally, more than 53,000 virtual Makatizen Cards were generated in 2024.

The project is Makati’s first digital public-private partnership, launched with Globe Telecom, GCash operator G-Xchange, and iBayad Online Ventures, aiming to unify and simplify access to city benefits.

Mayor Binay emphasized that the card plays a significant role in advancing the city’s digital governance and financial inclusion efforts. The integration with GCash enables residents to conveniently access funds and benefits without the need for physical transactions.

City officials are also exploring future enhancements

to the Makatizen Card system, including potential partnerships with additional private-sector service providers to offer more incentives and discounts to cardholders.

The local government has committed

to a continuous information campaign to raise awareness among residents and ensure wider adoption of the Makatizen Card, particularly among marginalized sectors and newly arrived city workers.

DE LIMA SLAMS SENATE OVER VP IMPEACH REMAND

EPRESENTATIVE-ELECT Leila de Lima of ML

RParty-list denounced the move of the Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, to remand to the House of Representatives the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte.

“We are being duped right in front of us. They asked the questions, and they also answered them. No due process. No shame,” De Lima said in a statement.

Voting 18–5, the Senate impeachment court moved to return the Articles of Impeachment to the lower chamber without dismissing or terminating them.

“What is this—a court or a cult?” said De Lima, a former senator and incoming party-list representative, who accepted the invitation to join the House prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Duterte.

The House refused to accept the Senate’s order, as members of the prosecution panel intend to seek clarification from the Senate on certain matters, while maintaining that the case transmitted by the lower chamber is constitutionally compliant.

According to De Lima, the move of the Senate under the leadership of Senate President Francis Escudero “is not just a setback. It is a stain—on the Senate, on the law, on the very idea that accountability is still possible in this country.”

“You had one job: to let the truth be heard. Instead, you chose silence dressed as procedure. Delay disguised as order. Cowardice in the costume of rules,” she added.

“But remember this: we will not be quiet. And not everything processed through technicality will be forgotten,” she said.

De Lima further said, “The fight for truth continues—outside your halls, beyond your rules, and with the people who still believe that justice must prevail.”

A constitutional law professor said senator-judges in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte should remain impartial.

Lawyer Jennifer Arlene Reyes said members of the impeachment court must remember that they are serving the interests of the Filipino people, not of an ally or a party-mate.

“Since the Constitution expressly provides that they, as the sole judges of the impeachment case, must try and decide this proceeding, then we can only hope that their conscience and political will prevail—not their biases or alliances,” she said at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

“To put it bluntly, they should be ashamed before the people. Their loyalty should be to the Constitution, because the Constitution represents the Filipino people,” Reyes added.

“They should always be reminded that they are the senators of the Filipino people—not of a particular official or individual,” she stressed.

Reyes said senator-judges must show the electorate that they truly represent them.

“They are the representatives of the people. They must always prove to the Filipino people that they deserve the votes of the populace. If you are a senator-judge but you manifestly

TAIWAN EXTENDS VISA-FREE ENTRY FOR FILIPINOS TRAVELERS

TAIWAN has extended its visa-free entry program for Filipino travelers until 2026.

show partiality or bias, that’s a betrayal of the public trust,” she said.

She challenged senators to exercise propriety and ethics by recusing themselves from the trial if they cannot remain neutral.

“Propriety is free. I appeal to them: if they still have any sense of it and respect for the Filipino people, they should stop being partial—or at least have the decency to inhibit themselves from the proceedings,” Reyes said.

The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, voted 18–5 on Tuesday night to return the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte to the House of Representatives, rejecting calls for outright dismissal while leaving the case technically alive for further action.

The motion, introduced by Senator-judge Alan Peter Cayetano, was presented as a compromise to preserve constitutional integrity without prematurely terminating the case.

Despite returning the articles, the court issued a formal writ of summons to Vice President Duterte, ordering her to respond to the charges outlined in Article I of the complaint.

The summons, served by the Office of the Senate Sergeant-atArms and received by the Office of the Vice President on June 11, mandates Duterte to respond within three days of receipt.

The impeachment complaint against Duterte stemmed from her alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds while concurrently serving as Vice President and Secretary of Education. The complaint claims these funds were expended without adequate transparency or legal basis.

House lawmakers, including those aligned with the ruling coalition, were divided on whether to proceed with the complaint. The eventual passage of the Articles of Impeachment was described as historic, as it marked the first such move against a sitting Vice President in recent memory.

Several senators, including those who voted in favor of the remand, argued that procedural inconsistencies in the House’s transmittal required clarification before the trial could proceed. However, critics see this as a stalling tactic to protect political allies.

NAVY RESCUES 90 PASSENGERS FROM STRANDED BOAT OFF TAWI-TAWI

THE Philippine Navy rescued 90 passengers from a vessel that experienced engine failure and drifted off the coast of Languyan, Tawi-Tawi, on June 12.

The wooden-hulled ML LEN-LYN was traveling from Pangutaran, Sulu, to Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi when it encountered mechanical trouble around 1:30 p.m.

A passenger sent a distress message via a mobile app, which was picked up by the crew of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS176).

The Navy coordinated with Naval Task Force 61 and responded to the emergency, locating the drifting vessel 3.4 nautical miles north of Tumbagaan Island. It was later towed to Chinese Pier in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

All passengers were unharmed. The Navy said the rescue highlights

its commitment to maritime safety and protecting lives at sea in Western Mindanao.

Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Western Mindanao Naval Command, praised the swift action of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez crew and emphasized the importance of maintaining rapid-response capabilities for sea emergencies.

The Navy urged seafarers and interisland vessel operators to regularly check engine conditions and ensure emergency communication tools are functional before departure to prevent such incidents.

Maritime authorities said the rescued passengers were mostly residents returning to their hometowns. Some were transported to temporary shelters and given food, water, and basic medical aid upon arrival in Bongao.

INDIA CRASH DEATH TOLL RISES TO 279

AHMEDABAD, India – Grieving families waited Saturday for news after one of the deadliest air disasters in decades, with the toll rising to 279 people killed in the Indian passenger jet crash.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner issued a mayday call shortly before it crashed around lunchtime on Thursday, bursting into a fireball as it hit residential buildings.

On Saturday, a police source said that 279 bodies had been recovered from the crash site in the northern Indian city of Ahmedabad, one of the worst plane disasters of the 21st century.

There was one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the jet when it crashed, leaving the tailpiece of the aircraft jutting out of a hostel for medical staff.

At least 38 people were killed on the ground.

“I saw my child for the first time in two years, it was a great time,” said Anil Patel, whose son and daughter-in-law had surprised him with a visit before boarding the Air India flight. AFP

WASHINGTON – US

President Donald Trump will preside over a huge military parade in Washington on his 79th birthday Saturday, as nationwide “No Kings” protests underscore America’s deep divisions over his second term.

Trump’s long-held dream of a parade will come true as nearly 7,000 troops plus dozens of tanks and helicopters rumble through the capital in an event officially marking the 250th anniversary of the US army.

The army says the event could cost up to $45 million.

At the same time, protests by the so-called “No Kings” movement are expected across the United States against what organizers say is a Trump personality cult.

Organizers said the rallies would be the largest since Trump returned to office in January, adding that they were “rejecting authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.”

Thousands more demonstrators are expected to turn out in Los Angeles to protest against Trump’s deployment of troops in America’s second-largest city following clashes sparked by immigration raids.

Trump says the Washington parade will be “like no other” – but has promised to use “very big force” if protesters attempt to disrupt the spectacle.

The highly unusual show of US martial might meanwhile comes a day after Trump boasted about how Israel had used American military equipment in its strikes on Iran’s nuclear program.

But the parade may face disruption from another source – the weather. Thunderstorms could hit Washington on Saturday when the parade is taking place.

The US army said on Friday that the weather was being “closely monitored and taken into consideration, but at this point nothing has changed.”

Trump meanwhile said he wasn’t bothered.

IRAN FIRES BACK AT ISRAEL AFTER STRIKE TARGETS NUKE FACILITIES

TEHRAN – Iran struck Israel early Saturday with barrages of missiles after a massive onslaught targeted the Islamic republic’s nuclear and military facilities, and killed several top generals.

Air raid sirens and explosions rang out across Israel overnight, with its military calling on residents to take refuge in bomb shelters Saturday morning.

The Israeli military said dozens of missiles – some intercepted – had been fired in the latest salvos from Iran.

Smoke was billowing above skyscrapers in downtown Tel Aviv, an AFP journalist reported, as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it had attacked dozens of targets in Israel.

Israel’s firefighting service said its teams were responding to the aftermath of Iranian missile strikes, including working to rescue people trapped in a high-rise building.

Rescuers said 34 people had been wounded in the Gush Dan area, including a woman who later died of her injuries, according to Israeli media reports.

Resident Chen Gabizon told AFP he ran to an underground shelter after receiving an alert notification.

THAILAND, CAMBODIA MEET OVER BORDER DISPUTE

BANGKOK – Officials from Thailand and Cambodia met Saturday in Phnom Penh, an AFP journalist saw, as the Southeast Asian neighbors sought to resolve a long-running border dispute that last month devolved into clashes. Troops from the two countries exchanged fire on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet, with one Cambodian soldier killed.

The Thai and Cambodian armies both said they had acted in selfdefense, but agreed to reposition their soldiers to avoid confrontations.

Thailand has tightened border controls with Cambodia in recent days, while Cambodia ordered troops on Friday to stay on “full alert”. Officials from the two countries had agreed to resolve the spat at Saturday’s meet in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Foreign ministry adviser Prasart Prasartvinitchai was leading the Thai delegation, while Chea Lam, minister of state in charge of the Secretariat of Border Affairs, headed the Cambodian contingent. Neither side commented ahead of the talks. AFP

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday approving a partnership between US Steel and Nippon Steel after the companies reached agreement on US national security guarantees.

The deal brings an end to the long-running saga over foreign ownership of a key national asset which began in December 2023, when US Steel and Nippon Steel announced plans for a $14.9 billion merger. Nippon’s acquisition of US Steel was held up by former president Joe Biden, who blocked it in his last weeks in the White House on national security grounds.

Trump initially opposed Nippon Steel’s takeover plan, calling for US Steel to remain domestically owned, but he threw his support behind a “partnership” in May.

“US Steel will REMAIN in America, and keep its Headquarters in the Great City of Pittsburgh,” the US president said in a Truth Social post. In a joint statement, US Steel and Nippon Steel said Trump “has approved the Companies’ historic partnership that will unleash unprecedented investments in steelmaking in the United States, protecting and creating more than 100,000 jobs.”

“In addition to President Trump’s Executive Order approving the partnership, the Companies have entered into a National Security Agreement (NSA) with the US Government,” they said, which calls for approximately $11 billion in new investments to be made by 2028. AFP

As this developed, Herbosa expressed support for the full implementation of the 30-kilometer per hour (kph) speed limit in city and municipality streets.

According to the DOH, about 12,000 Filipinos die due to road accidents, annually. In 2024 alone, it recorded more than 37,000 road accident-related injuries.

“Let us all move forward with urgency and unity and let us renew the commitment to reduce road crash deaths and serious injuries by 50 percent by 2028,” Herbosa said.

“Let us reject complacency (and) pursue evidence-based solutions.”

Road systems, he said, should also improve to cater to two-wheeler drivers and bike users.

Under the Land Transportation and Traffic Code or Republic Act 4136, the maximum allowable speed on city and municipality streets, with light traffic, when not designated “through streets,” is only 30 kph for passenger cars, motorcycles, motor trucks, and buses. Move As One Coalition co-convenor Robert Siy Jr. said its full implementation in urban areas would not only make streets safer but also more accessible to the population.

“More people will want to walk, more people will want to bike, more people will want to use public transport – it will change the character of our area,” he said.

“We became the number one sardines brand in the Philippines. Not because we had the biggest resources, but because we had the biggest heart. We want to give back to the people who made our success possible,” said MPFI president and CEO Michelle Tiu Lim-Chan.

As part of its milestone year, MPFI launched the P50-million

Mega Milyonaryo promo and an anniversary video featuring longtime ambassador Sharon Cuneta. MPFI is targeting to double its business every five years by strengthening its 135,000-strong local distribution network and

expanding its global footprint.

“It is an audacious goal, but one we believe is entirely within reach, because we are building with insight, scaling with discipline, and growing with purpose. We are present in the daily lives of Filipino families. We

MAYNILAD Water Services’ (Maynilad) veteran engineer is bringing artificial intelligence into the trenches as the utility ramps up efforts to detect and reduce nonrevenue water (NRW) across its network.

Cardholders also enjoy up to P500 in rebates during the first month, a 3 percent discount on mobile load purchases, and zero fees for bill payments made through the app.

With QR Ph-enabled payments, the card offers a secure, cashless option, empowering sari-sari store and carinderia owners to take steps toward stronger financial health.

The launch took center stage at the Tindahan ni Aling Puring (TNAP) Convention 2025, held from May 15 to 17, 2025 at the World Trade Center in Pasay.

“Together with Puregold, we’re making it easier for Filipinos to access credit that fits their needs. This partnership is more than about convenience, it’s about empowering people to take control of their finances and live better lives,” said Home Credit Philippines chief business development officer Zdenek Jankovsky.

Maynilad’s Central NRW Management Division head Ryan B. Jamora, shared how AI is transforming the way the utility hunts for leaks and secures water efficiency gains across Metro Manila.

SMARTER LEAK DETECTION

“In October 2023, we launched a pilot test of an AI system to help us identify segments of our water network most prone to leaks,” Jamora said.

The technology, developed by Infrawise under Portuguese firm AGS, processes a wide range of data from Maynilad’s network—pipe age, material, repair history—and uses machine learning to flag areas at high risk of failure.

Instead of inspecting entire stretches of pipeline, the AI helps narrow the scope to specific zones with higher chances of leaks.

“So if we were supposed to inspect three kilometers, now we can just focus on 500 meters to a kilometer. It has significantly improved our efficiency,” Jamora explained.

WIDENING THE NET ON WATER LEAKS

The initial pilot covered 750 meters of pipe and resulted in the detection of up to 2,000 leaks.

Encouraged by the results, Maynilad expanded the system’s coverage to an additional 1,500 kilometers across its network. So far, AI-supported leak detection now covers roughly 2,250 kilometers, around one-third of Maynilad’s total smaller-diameter pipeline network.

“This is not yet the entire system, but we’ve prioritized areas with the highest NRW,” said Jamora, pointing to zones in Manila, Caloocan, Quezon City, Valenzuela, and others.

“We include funding for technology pilots like this in our business plan, so we can keep exploring new tools that improve operations,” he added.

BENEFITS BEYOND THE BOTTOM LINE

The operational gains are clear, teams spend less time on

low-risk areas and more time fixing real leaks. The bigger benefit is water saved and rerouted to communities that need it most.

“We’re able to contribute directly to accelerating NRW reduction. Every drop we save from leaks can go to customers who need it, especially crucial during dry spells or El Niño conditions,” Jamora said.

Maynilad’s NRW rate has dropped significantly over the years, from a staggering 66 percent in the mid-2000s to 36 percent as of March 2025.

This means one-third of water once lost to leaks and inefficiencies is now back in the supply pipeline, helping stabilize service coverage.

While the AI tool is now a mainstay in Maynilad’s NRW strategy, the company is actively scouting additional technologies, especially for leak detection.

DECADES OF INSIGHT

A civil engineer by training, Jamora graduated from New Era University and later earned a diploma in water resources from the University of the Philippines.

Jamora himself is a product of Maynilad’s long-running cadet engineering program, having joined the utility in 2002.

Over 22 years later, he still credits that early exposure to the company’s full operations for shaping his strategic mindset.

“The cadetship gave me a broader view of how everything fits together, and that has helped guide our work on NRW ever since,” he said.

Outside of work, Jamora balances his leadership role with family life. He lives in Quezon City with his wife and their three children.

For personal downtime, Jamora turns to fitness to recharge. “I used to play a lot of basketball, but I had to slow down because of my knees,” he shared with a laugh. “Running works for me.”

In many ways, his story mirrors the utility he helps run—grounded, constantly adapting, and always moving forward. Othel V. Campos

will make sure MEGA is even more accessible—abot-kaya, maaasahan, at tunay na pang-Pinoy,” said MPFI chief growth and development officer Marvin Tiu Lim.

The company is now present in the UAE through a partnership with Baqer Mohebi Enterprises, available at Costco in Canada, and growing in Europe and the US.

MPFI is also making strides in wellness, with the acquisition of Jimm’s Coffee Mix and Mega Sardines recently earning a “Superfood” endorsement from the US-based Medical Wellness Association.

MPFI drives impact through sustainability and community programs. Its Mega Bigay Sustansya initiative has served nearly 500,000 meals to children since 2019, while the Mega Malasakit Mission delivers nutrition, education, and care directly to underserved barangays.

IS SINGKAMAS SAFE FOR DOGS?

SINGKAMAS, also known as Jicama or Turnip, is a crunchy, mildly sweet root vegetable commonly enjoyed in various cuisines. While it is a healthy snack for humans, pet owners are unsure if it is safe for dogs.

What Is Singkamas?

Singkamas (Pachyrhizus erosus) is a tuberous root vegetable that originated in Mexico and Central America. It has a papery brown skin and crisp, white flesh with a flavor reminiscent of raw potato or pear. Rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, singkamas offers several health benefits for humans and dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Singkamas?

Yes, dogs can consume singkamas but only the peeled, raw flesh in moderation. The crunchy texture and low-calorie content make it an appealing treat for dogs.

According to Dr. Richard Grayson in “Risk and Benefits of Jicama” published in the All

About Paws website, several precautions must be observed:

• Peel Thoroughly: The skin, seeds, leaves, and stems of the singkamas plant contain a toxin called rotenone, which acts as an insecticide and is harmful to dogs. These parts can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and digestive discomfort if ingested .

• Avoid Seasonings: Humans often season singkamas with salt, chili powder, or other spices. These additives can upset a dog's digestive system, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea or, in severe cases, sodium poisoning .

• Serve in Moderation: Due to its high fiber content, excessive consumption of singkamas can lead to gastrointestinal issues like bloating, gas, or diarrhea. It is advisable to

introduce singkamas gradually into your dog's diet and monitor their response.

Potential Risks of Feeding Singkamas to Dogs

While singkamas can be a healthy treat when prepared correctly, several risks should be considered:

1. Choking Hazard: The firm texture of singkamas can pose a choking risk, especially for smaller dogs. Always cut singkamas into small, manageable pieces before offering it to your pet .

2. Allergic Reactions: Some dogs may be allergic to singkamas. Signs of an allergic reaction can include itching, redness, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, discontinue feeding singkamas and consult your veterinarian.

3. Digestive Upset: Overconsumption of singkamas can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea. It is important to introduce singkamas gradually and observe your dog's response .

4. Toxicity from Other Plant Parts: As mentioned, the skin, seeds, leaves, and stems of the singkamas plant contain rotenone, a toxic compound. These parts should never be fed to dogs.

Nutritional Benefits of Singkamas for Dogs

Dr. Grayson notes that when singkamas is

prepared and served correctly, it offers several nutritional benefits:

• High in Fiber: Singkamas contains inulin, a type of dietary fiber that can aid in digestion and promote healthy bowel movements.

• Low in Calories: With only about 38 calories per 100 grams, singkamas is a low-calorie treat, making it suitable for dogs on a weight management plan.

• Rich in Nutrients: Singkamas provides essential nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, which support overall health and immune function.

How to Safely Serve Singkamas to Your Dog

To safely incorporate singkamas into your dog's diet:

1. Peel the Singkamas: Remove all skin, seeds, leaves, and stems to eliminate toxic parts.

2. Cut into Small Pieces: Slice the singkamas into small, bite-sized pieces to reduce the risk of choking.

3. Serve in Moderation: Offer singkamas as an occasional treat, not as a regular part of your dog's diet. A few small pieces a few times a week should suffice.

4. Monitor Your Dog: After introducing singkamas, observe your dog for any signs of digestive upset or allergic reactions.

A LIFELONG BOND: ANIMALS WHO MATE FOR LIFE

Last of two parts

The Exceptions: When Monogamy Breaks Down

Despite the benefits of monogamy, there are exceptions to the rule. In some species, environmental factors or social dynamics can influence the stability of pair bonds. For instance, limited resources or the presence of competitors can lead to the breakdown of monogamous relationships.

As mentioned in the article, "Monogamous Animals," by National Geographic, wolves are typically monogamous, forming strong pair bonds that last for several years. However, in areas with limited prey or high competition, wolves may engage in extra-pair copulations or even dissolve their pair bonds altogether.

The Mystery of Animal Love

The question of whether animals experience love in the same way humans do remains a topic of debate. While it is impossible to fully understand the subjective experiences of other species, the enduring bonds and affectionate behaviors observed in monogamous animals suggest a level of emotional connection that goes beyond simple biological drives.

As noted in the article "Do Animals Fall in Love" by Discover Magazine, prairie voles exhibit strong pair bonds and display affectionate behaviors towards their mates, such

as grooming and cuddling. These behaviors suggest a level of emotional attachment that could be interpreted as love, though the exact nature of their feelings remains a mystery. The complexity of love, with its multifaceted nature, makes it difficult to define and even more

challenging to attribute to other species. While humans express love through a range of emotions, including passion, intimacy, and commitment, animals may express these feelings differently.

The prairie vole's affectionate behaviors, while seemingly indicative of love, could also

be attributed to other factors, such as territoriality or the need for social bonding. Further research is needed to understand the underlying motivations behind these behaviors and to determine if they truly represent a form of love similar to that experienced by humans.

The study of animal behavior, particularly in the context of monogamous relationships, provides valuable insights into the complexities of social interactions and the potential for emotional connections in the animal kingdom. While the concept of animal love remains elusive, the evidence suggests that some animals may experience a level of emotional attachment that goes beyond basic survival instincts.

The phenomenon of monogamy in the animal kingdom is a testament to the diverse and complex social dynamics that shape the natural world. From the enduring bonds of albatrosses to the affectionate behaviors of prairie voles, monogamy offers a glimpse into the intricate relationships that exist between animals, highlighting the importance of social bonds and the enduring power of commitment.

BANGKOK—TOURISTS regularly line up outside Thipsamai’s original branch in Bangkok’s Pratu Phi area along Mahachai Road, often waiting up to 30 minutes for a plate of Pad Thai cooked over charcoal and wrapped in a thin, golden egg crepe.

But for Thanyanan Balsamut, vice president of Thipsamai Group, the queue is more than a sign of popularity, it also reflects a broader mission to share Thai culture through its most iconic dish.

“Thailand is a land of food, and the food is [powerful]. If you think about Thailand, you think about smiling, you think about food,

and Pad Thai is one of the national Thai dishes," Balsamut told Manila Standard Cravings. Founded in 1939, Thipsamai has become a culinary institution. The restaurant’s name honors its founder, Samai, whose recipes and entrepreneurial spirit carried the small business through wartime Bangkok. “Thip,” meaning angel or divine, was added to reflect

the high quality of the Pad Thai, turning the brand into “Thipsamai.”

From its beginnings as a modest street stall, Thipsamai has grown into a national icon. Now in its 86th year, the brand is served on Thai Airways and continues to expand its footprint both locally and globally.

The restaurant’s signature Pad Thai, cooked over a charcoal flame and wrapped in a paper-thin egg crepe, has earned international recognition. In recent years, it was included in TasteAtlas’ list of the world’s most legendary restaurants, rising to No. 36 in 2024.

The restaurant was also awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2018, an acknowledgment that Balsamut said attracts customers who follow international dining accolades.

THE last thing that Olivia Limpe-Aw wants for the Maria Clara brand of Des-

tileria Limtuaco is for it to become a dinosaur.

“We all know what happened to dinosaurs,” she said with a guffaw.

It’s not just a matter of survival – it’s about having a vision for the future, one where Gen Z consumers are driving and challenging the cocktail industry.

With its signature sweet red wine and whisper of citrus now enhanced by a vibrant fizz, Maria Clara Sparkling Sangria brings a whole new energy to the table—fun, refreshing, and always cele bration-ready.

Destileria Limtuaco is not new to making strategic pivots to in novate and thrive.

When the world shifted during the COVID-19 pan demic and liquor bans changed social norms, Maria Clara responded with innovation. The com pany introduced Maria Clara Virgin Sangria, a zero percent alcohol variant for those who wanted to savor the same rich experi ence, but responsibly.

In 2024, Destileria Limtuaco expand ed its inclusivity mission further with the Maria Clara Punch, the first halal-

PRESERVING THAI CULINARY IDENTITY

“We also very proud and honored to receive the ranking from Taste Atlas. It’s just only one Thai restaurant in this list. So, it’s our pride and honor to receive this," she continued.

Despite the recognition, she said the team remains focused on quality rather than prestige.

To accommodate the demand and shorten wait times, the brand now operates five locations, including in shopping centers like ICONSIAM. The flagship branch in Pratu Phi now stays open from 9 a.m. until midnight.

“We also train our employees to have service in mind. Smile and ‘Sawasdee krap,’ ‘Kob khun krap,’” she said, emphasizing the importance of Thai hospitality in the overall experience.

When asked what makes Pad Thai such a lasting favorite, Balsamut pointed to its simplicity and balance.

“For Pad Thai, just one dish, and you receive the full nutrients—protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins, among others. So, I think it’s full of nutrients in one dish. And it’s very comfortable, and very nostalgic," Balsamut explained.

Thipsamai’s enduring appeal and its efforts to maintain tradition while expanding its reach reflect a broader trend in how Thai cuisine is positioned globally: as a source of comfort, a form of cultural identity, and increasingly, a world-class culinary export.

DADS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT AT ARANETA CITY

ARANETA City honors fathers and father figures with “DADDYVERSE,” a two-day celebration filled with events, freebies, and entertainment from June 14 to 15. The highlight is “Guiding Light: Dads Talk” on June 15 at Gateway Mall 2’s Quantum Skyview, featuring Celso “JR” Santiago of Dadvocacy, fragrance mogul Joel Cruz , and content creator Benedict Cua . The forum offers real stories on modern fatherhood meant to inspire and educate.

“This Father’s Day, we’re honoring dads for the invaluable role they play in shaping families and communities,” said Marjorie Go ,

Fvice president for marketing of Araneta City.

Attendees can enjoy La-Z-Boy demos, skin checks by Diana Stalder, and scent testing at the Aficionado Perfume Bar. At Ali Mall, “Dads and Space Pals” caters to fur-dads with free pet services like grooming and anti-rabies shots.

On June 15, “Dad’s Jam” brings live busker music to Palenque, Times Square Food Park, and Manhattan Row, while ‘‘aRUNeta: Run’’ with Dads kicks off at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Dads can also enjoy special store promos and hotel deals.

OR Benedict Cua, fatherhood wasn’t something unexpected but in fact, it was part of his life plan.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Standard Entertainment in a recent event, he opened up how he enjoys his journey as a father.

“At a very young age, I already knew that I’m going to be a father someday. And fortunately, I became one. I’m enjoying it every single day,” Benedict said.

Today, the content creator shares glimpses of his journey as a first-time dad through vlogs and social media posts. But does putting his parenting life online come with pressure?

“At the beginning, I felt a little pressured. But now I’m at the stage in my life where I don’t let what other people think of me affect me,” he admitted.

Even before becoming a father, Benedict said he felt the responsibility to be someone worth looking up to.

“Before I decided to have a son, I felt like I needed to be a good example—not just by mindset, but to actually be one. Parenting, you can never perfect it. As long as you learn from the people around you, then you will

always be sure that you can lean on other people. Even if you make mistakes, there can always be solutions,” shared Benedict.

Along the way, he discovered that parenting came with an unexpected emotional impact.

“Recently, I realized that parenting is a healing journey for me as well. But I did not intend it to be a healing journey. It was inadvertently a healing journey of my inner child,” he continued.

of—compared to what other people think when they hear ‘solo parents.’ It’s actually very different,” Benedict explained.

When asked what his son has taught him, he answered simply: “Patience. It’s easy to tell yourself that I’ll endure this. But it’s different when you are tired and you face all those challenges. But at the end of the day, as I said earlier, he’s very worth it.”

He also expressed his hopes that one day, when his son is older and watches his vlogs, he understands what those moments really meant.

He tries each day to become the kind of parent he wished

“The parenting I’ve always wanted to have, that’s what I strive to do every single day,” the vlogger added. He doesn’t sugarcoat the difficulties either—but chooses to see them in a positive light.

“It’s hard, but it’s worth it. So, if it’s worth it, you don’t see it as a struggle. You see it as a challenge,” Benedict stated.

He also said that he thinks constantly about how to guide his son to become a good

“Every single day, I think about how else I can teach him things. At the end of the day, it’s worth it.

It’s also rewarding,” he added.

Benedict is a solo parent—but he’s quick to shift the focus away from that label. “It’s not hard because there’s so much love.

There’s so much love given to him. It’s more than just a father’s love, a mother’s love. We’re all surrounded

The experience, he added, is far from the assumptions people

EMPOWERING FILIPINO CHANGEMAKERS THROUGH COMMUNITY-BUILDING PROGRAM

AGROWING number of young Filipinos are taking on leadership roles in creative, technological, and community sectors, with support from Globe Telecom’s youthfocused initiative, the Globe Community Builders Program.

The program, which includes internships, mentorships, and collaborative events, is designed to help students gain real-world experience and develop their skills beyond the classroom. Globe said the initiative is part of its broader effort to engage young Filipinos in nation-building through purposeful platforms and creative expression.

Among those participating in the program is  Christiane Guanzon, a student at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.

Guanzon first joined a campus event hosted by Globe and later became an intern involved in organizing youth initiatives, including “Pitch Day,” which allows student leaders to present social impact projects and receive feedback from professionals.

“Globe didn’t just let me in the room—they gave me responsibilities and the opportunity to lead,” he said.

Visual artist  Miguel Isiah Diva, a student from the Technological University of the Philippines, won the Globe x Art Toys Online Contest for his tribute painting “Tails and Trails,” which honored his late pet. The win led to further collaboration, including a live mural event with artists supporting animal welfare organization Pawssion Project.

For  Franchezka Zapanta, a university student originally from Mindanao, Globe’s youth events helped her adapt to life in Manila. She went on to launch BitDigest.io, a tech platform introduced during a Globe-hosted event, and has since returned as a mentor to fellow student entrepreneurs.

“Showing up was my silent act of courage,” Zapanta said. “When brands believe in you, you begin to believe in yourself too.”

Jessie James Valera at Our Lady of Fatima University, used Globe’s art events to explore their interest in fashion, makeup, and performance. Valera participated in Art Fair Philippines and events like Kmmunity Reveluv Night, finding a space that fostered creative growth and individual expression.

“What I learned is that believing in your creative voice—even if it’s different—can take you places,” Valera said.

Andrew Lim, Globe’s Marketing Youth Cultures lead, said the company remains committed to supporting young Filipinos across the country.

“From Luzon to Mindanao, students are stepping into their potential. With the right support, they’re not just participating in the future—they’re helping build it,” Lim said.

FILIPINO FASHION DESIGN STUDENTS IMMERSE IN MILAN

FASHION Design and Merchandising students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) immersed themselves in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, through an international study program aimed at strengthening their technical and creative skills in the global design industry.

The 38 students took part in five-day masterclasses at the Istituto Secoli, one of Italy’s top fashion institutions, where they received training in tailoring, design thinking, and garment construction.

The program focused on Italian methods, men’s waistcoat construction, and precision hand stitching. They also studied tailoring tools, equipment, and brand critique.

Each student completed a front waistcoat as a final output and joined a design thinking critique session led by  Angelo Di Cristofaro. Their coursework

contributed to their Benilde subjects: Fashion Design Process, Retail Environment, and Surface Design 2.

“The masterclasses provided industry-standard practices that bridged academic knowledge with real-world application,” said  Ionica Abrahan Lim FDM   chairperson, who accompanied the group alongside faculty member  Lydia Pajaron. “Secoli’s laboratories supported meticulous pattern work and precise construction—familiar to our students but distinct in its international expertise.”

Industry professionals mentored the group, including  Memena Pallini, Marco Tataranni, Gabriele Marra,  and  Di Cristofaro

The students also attended the

explored the Duomo di Milano, Teatro alla Scala, and Fondazione Prada.

The itinerary included visits to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Monte Napoleone, and Serravalle Designer Outlet. A day trip to Florence brought the group to Musée Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci Garden.

“The program fostered not only technical skills but also an authentic understanding of the cultural and commercial elements that shape global fashion,” Abrahan Lim said. “Students engaged with international peers, exchanged ideas, and explored diverse industry perspectives.”

FTER first meeting Vince Lampert last year, I recently sat down with the dynamic executive director of Nay Palad Hideaway for an insightful conversation.

Tucked along the untouched shores of Siargao, Nay Palad Hideaway is a secluded haven of tailor-made luxury and transformative escapes.  Lampert’s visionary leadership has helped elevate the resort into one of the Philippines’ most coveted destinations for discerning travelers.

wellness, and sustainability, Lampert envisioned Nay Palad as a canvas to redefine luxury—as a means of freedom and profound emotional connection.

Under his guidance, Nay Palad Hideaway has redefined barefoot luxury, blending

“What first drew me to Nay Palad Hideaway was its unique

culture where each team member feels valued, heard, and inspired to deliver service excellence with heart. I tend to champion collaboration over hierarchy, ensuring that the entire team— regardless of role—shares a common vision of creating a truly magical, barefoot-luxury experience,” shared Lampert.

His deep love for the environment and commitment to the resort’s sustainability are essential to preserving nature’s gifts for future generations.

Lampert continues, “I am also deeply committed to sustainability and community engagement, guiding the resort’s operations with a long-term view toward regenerative tourism and cultural preservation. By placing people and the planet at the core of every decision, I set a tone of integrity and responsibility that resonates through every part of Nay Palad Hideaway.”

With a background shaped by international experience and a deep passion for design,

FATHER’S Day has always been a little tricky. While Mother’s Day often comes with a clear playbook of flowers and heartfelt messages, honoring Dad sometimes feels like a last-minute dinner reservation or a pair of socks wrapped in shiny paper.

But this year, Solaire Resort North presents a distinctive way to honor fathers with an experience that places them in a setting fit for a king.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to honoring dads, the resort has chosen to go all-in on experience. From staycation packages to sprawling buffets and active family bonding, it positions itself as a luxury hotel and a venue for appreciation, memory-making, and rest, all rolled into one. The room packages speak directly to families

who want to treat their dads to more than just a day off. Bookings made until today include accommodations for a family of four, breakfast at the Fresh International Buffet, and access to discounted

place where purpose and hospitality could coexist in balance with nature and community,” said Lampert. Operating a luxury resort demands far more than impeccable service and breathtaking aesthetics. From maintaining flawless guest experiences amid staffing shortages to preserving delicate ecosystems while delivering five-star comfort, the obstacles can feel Herculean. Yet it is precisely this relentless pursuit of excellence against formidable odds that defines true luxury hospitality.

In 2021, after Typhoon Odette devastated Nay Palad Hideaway, Lampert led its full reconstruction— from rebuilding the team to overseeing

intimate. More than a business opportunity, it was a chance to build something meaningful—a

training and reopening. It was a major challenge met with collective dedication.

Guests often make unusual requests, but the team meets them with creativity. For one anniversary, they recreated a couple’s first date: a European bistro dinner complete with local ingredients, a mangrove boardwalk setup, and live music. The couple was moved to tears—a testament to the team’s commitment to crafting unforgettable moments.

Pioneering “barefoot luxury” in the region, Nay Palad offers effortless elegance rooted in nature and genuine care. There are no set menus or schedules—just intuitive service shaped around each guest’s pace and desires, from moonlit feasts to spontaneous island adventures.

Vince Lampert leads Nay Palad Hideaway with the same intuitive spirit that defines the resort itself— where foresight meets flexibility, and every detail serves a deeper sense of human connection. Under his guidance, luxury isn’t scripted; it’s alive.
