PINAY BRAVES ARCTIC FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE By Ronald O. Reyes JOANNA Sustento lost most of her family along with 7, 000 other people in her city when Super Typhoon “Yolanda” battered Central Visayas on Nov. 8, 2013. Four years later, the 26-year-old Tacloban native is traveling to the Arctic, along with other climate change advocates from Greenpeace, to confront the Norwegian government and a giant oil company, Statoil, which has another gas drilling project in the Barents Sea in the Arctic Ocean. “I consider this story my reason, my purpose, as to why I was given another chance to live,” Sustento said. She said her stay aboard the Greenpeace ship “Arctic Sunrise” in the Barents Sea from July 18 to Aug. 6 is “very personal.” Sustento, who has not seen the remains of her father and nephew, said being in the Arctic was like “meeting the monster” that killed her family and left her city in ruins. “For every Filipino bearing the

COMMISSION on Human Rights chairman Jose Luis Martin Gascon on Friday shrugged off calls for his resignation and dismissed accusations that he was biased. He and the commission are apolitical, he said. “I assure the public… that none of my previous or future actions in public office would ever be motivated by vengefulness, vindictiveness, or subjectivity. We shall always abide by constitutional and human rights precepts in the performance of our duties as we shall keep faith that truth and justice shall ultimately prevail,” he said. He said he will respect what other people would think of him. “Every person has his or her opinion about how each of us should perform our respective mandates. I stand by the full record of my public service, including my current tenure as chairperson of the CHR,” he said. “I will, to the best of my ability, perform my lawful mandate as head of an independent non-partisan constitutional office given the duty to protect and promote human rights in this country.” He vowed not to be cowed by threats or be influenced to give special treatment to anyone. “I will continue to do so without fear or Next page

OMBUDSMAN Conchita Carpio-Morales hit out at President Rodrigo Duterte Friday, saying he has no business meddling in the affairs of the Office of the Ombudsman. At the Integrity and Anti-Corruptoin Initiative in Changing Times forum held at the Novotel Manila, Araneta Center in Quezon City, Morales reacted to the President’s stance that he had the final say on whether or not to allow policemen and soldiers to be summoned for investigation by the Ombudsman or the Commission on Human Rights. The President called on the Ombudsman to “refrain from citing them for contempt because I have the authority to give the final say whether they attend or not.” “Ano pakialam niya [What’s his business] under the law? We have subpoena powers,” Morales said. While she was not invited to attend the State of the Nation Address on July 24, she said she was told about the President’s statement during a press conference. “We have orders for particular officials, including police and soldiers, to show up or to file pleadings. If they don’t file pleadings, that’s their lookout,” Morales said. GASCON

Rody to Joma: Come home, fight your war By John Paolo Bencito THE word war between President Rodrigo Duterte and Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison continued as they traded barbs against each other Friday, with the President daring The Netherlands-based rebel leader to return to the country and fight his war. But Sison lashed back at Duterte, saying he did not need to prove himself to anyone in the arena of revolutionary struggle. “If you are truly a revolutionary leader, my god, come home and fight here,” he said in a media interview on Thursday night, after

visiting the wake of the six police officers killed in an operation in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental. Duterte criticized the self-exiled Sison for living a good life in Utrecht while members of the New People’s Army, the armed wing of the CPP, struggle daily in the mountains. “Your people here -- you NPA members -- have been dying, losing their husbands.
