Create a clever puppet for fall contest From staff reports

What comes to mind when you think of puppets? Whether it’s Sesame Street characters or makeshift plays put on by your siblings, we want kids to become puppet masters for our next Wave contest.

We’re asking kids to put on their thinking hats and design creative puppets. Puppets can be made out of a sock, a brown paper bag or a variety of other things you’ll find laying around your house. Use your imagination to help decide if you want to make an animal, a person, a robot or something entirely different.

Kids are encouraged to use crayons, craft supplies or whatever items they have on hand to make their puppets stand out from the rest. Entries will be judged on their cleverness, originality and good use of supplies.

The top winner will be awarded a sandwich combo from San Francisco Sourdough Eatery, and his or her puppet will be featured in the next Wave newspaper. Two runners up will also receive half sandwich combos from San Francisco Sourdough Eatery.

What would all these ingredients make if they were mixed together?

2 cups white sugar 1 cup butter ½ cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 eggs 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt If you guessed a pan of brownies, you are absolutely right … and maybe a little bit bored. Something that might spice it up a bit is the ingredient of your imagination.

What if the same recipe included 8 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a Hershey’s Candy Bar or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup chopped into pieces? Now you have managed to create the world’s best chocolate-cravers brownies (or at least the Chad Kimberley specialty).

Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade who live or attend school in Liberty Lake are eligible to enter this contest. Only submit one puppet per person, please. Be sure to include your name, age, parent’s name, phone number and what your puppet is with your entry.

That is part of the fun of cooking. The chef has the opportunity to create or invent brand-new dishes or desserts. The delicious options are endless!

Lots of websites have plenty of ideas for kid-friendly cooking. Whether it’s reptiles recipes (just to clarify, in the shape of reptiles, not using reptile meat) or animal appetizers, use the world around you as inspiration for the food you make.

But before you run into the kitchen and start creating the world’s largest chocolate chip cookie, talk with your parents and come up with a plan. With a little bit of planning and inspiration, you will be saying “bon appetit” as you serve your creations to friends and family.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe, healthy and having fun while doing some cooking creations.

Tip 1: Ask the parents. Before you take off on your cooking creation ask your mom or dad if you can and most importantly if they want to help you cook. Don’t start without getting their okay.

Tip 2: Wash your hands. You need to get those fingers clean before you start and each time you touch raw meat, chicken or seafood.

Tip 3: Know what is on. Make sure you know when a burner is on or when the oven is cooking. Touching a hot burner is a guaranteed way to end a creative cooking day.

Tip 4: Watch the knives. Some cooking involves cutting, dicing or chopping up veggies, fruit or other ingredients. Be smart with the knives or ask an adult for help.

Tip 5: Add favorite ingredients. When creating some fun food, add things you and your family love. Remember it is your creation so you have to add the favorites.

Tip 6: Invent a new meal. Whether you create something from scratch or put a new twist on an old meal (How about peanut butter and jelly pizza?), find a way to invent your own personal masterpiece.

Tip 7: Clean up. This is the not-so-fun part about creating in the kitchen, but it must be done. A quick way for a parent to say no to creating in the future is to leave a big mess for them to clean up.

Building bricks for the imagination

Pick any house with kids in Liberty Lake and chances are you will find some Lego blocks. The many colors, sizes and shapes allow kids to recreate scenes from “Star Wars” or “Toy Story” before the inevitable destruction and clean up.

The concept of these interlocking blocks originated almost 80 years ago in Europe.

Some people doubted they could be successful over wooden toys, but the system for creative play proved its critics wrong.

The blocks evolved over the years and soon became a staple in play rooms around the globe. Lego sets became even more specialized over time. Themes from cartoons and movies such as “Harry Potter” and “Indiana Jones” were transformed into Lego sets with specialized accessories.

There are even several Lego video games designed for the Wii and other gaming systems. In 1998, the company introduced a robotic line called Mindstorm which uses programmable bricks and computer software.

Legos are great for your imagination since they can be stacked to create a variety of buildings, creatures and scenes. Whether you follow the directions in a set or use your imagination to construct your own ideas, the possibilities are endless!

Kids put their ideas into action by crafting, building

Even though the past months have been summer vacation, several local kids have not given their imagination any time off. In fact, some kids have taken advantage of the free time in those summer days to try or finish ideas they’ve had

in their minds.

Some said they search magazines or websites for ideas of what to make, while others said boredom helped fuel their creations. Whether it’s with duct tape or

wood, popsicle sticks or paint, kids express their creativity in a variety of ways.

The Wave recently met a few kids at their homes to talk about what they like to make and to see their crafty creations.

Kaylee Wilding used colorful duct tape to create a purse and other accessories.

Combine a crafty 8-year-old girl and some colorful duct tape and what do you get? Duct tape fashion jewelry and accessories, of course!

Kaylee Wilding said one of her friends at school was selling duct tape wallets, so she went online to find a video of how to make one. From there she found ideas of how to make not only wallets, but jewelry, flowers and even a purse out of duct tape.

She said her mom took her to find some colorful duct tape at local craft sores, and the designs took off from there.

“It’s a little crazy, but they turn out great,” Kaylee said of her duct tape crafts. “When I show them to other family members, they think it’s weird but funny.”

A crafter since she was 4 or 5 years old, Kaylee shares a love of making things with her mom. They come up with ideas, shop for supplies and work together on projects.

Kaylee said she is currently working on completing a board game called “Busy Babysitter” fashioned after the game her mom came up with, “Make It Grow.”

Kaylee said she also loves to draw, trace and copy items. A picture she did this summer won first place in a content sponsored by the Liberty Lake Historical Society during Liberty Lake Days. She hopes to learn how to make origami paper animals in the future.

When you walk into Seth Baker’s home, you’ll find mounds of legos and K’NEX pieces neatly collected in bins and containers in a play room. It’s clear a builder of some sort lives there.

But one of the most impressive items on display is made of an unlikely material — popsicle sticks. Seth saw a picture of a Turkish airplane and decided he wanted to create one of his own. So he gathered materials and asked his dad, uncle and grandpa to help him with the two-day project.

The result? A plane consisting of almost 400 popsicle sticks along with some balsa wood, car wheels, K’NEX, hot glue and paint. He also constructed a control tower.

When asked if this was the most unique item he’s built, Seth’s response was, “One of many.”

A builder since he was 3 years old, Seth started working with Legos and K’NEX to make his own creations. He also has been working on a book for the past few years called, “The Book of a Million Books.”

“My illustrator isn’t in my class at school anymore, so it’s been hard to work on it without seeing one another,” he said.

His latest idea involves constructing a mini golf course that utilizes two levels for the holes. He’s hoping to present the idea to the city of Liberty Lake someday before he’s out of school.

When several neighborhood boys found themselves bored on a summer afternoon, they put their heads together and focused on using a different type of board.

John Dunne, 11, Thomas Dunne, 9, and Ethan Schaefer, 10, said they worked along with Dane Anderson and Chase Urbiha to design their contraption. They drafted plans to make the wheeled vehicle out of items lying around their homes.

After gathering supplies and enlisting the help of some adults, they put their plans into action. They spent the better part of a day nailing boards, fastening on wheels, drilling (with the help of adults) and giving it a paint job.

After demonstrating a run from a top of hill in their neighborhood just west of Pavillion Park, the boys were talking about adjustments that could be made to help it run with more speed or how they could add onto it to accommodate more people.

The group of guys said they like to experiment by making things such as scooter jumps and scientific experiments. They have a variety of different projects in mind they’d like to try.

So what’s up their sleeves to design next?

“A water balloon cannon, if I can ever find PVC pipe large enough,” John said.

The Splash did a story on blooming artist Miranda Kuhlmann over Valentine’s Day, so we decided to check in to see what new endeavors she’s up to. Her mom said she recently returned from Camp Sweyolaken, and she’s been reading a lot of the Percy Jackson series this summer as well as learning how to paddleboard.

But did we mention she loves to paint?

A lover of art, Miranda always has a creative project going on at Miranda Kuhlmann her house, Age: 9 and she Family: Parents, takes reguJohnny and Julie lar classes Kuhlmann; sister, at The Art Cassidy Chalet. She said that pictures often inspire her to paint, and painting gives her a peaceful feeling.

What makes Miranda unique is that she gives a portion of her proceeds to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane. So far Miranda has raised $1,000 for the Spokane charity that provides 24hour care to children. She continues to add new paintings and has a total of 32 on her website, www.artsyfartsymiranda. com, which she sells for $5 a piece.

7-year-old wins portrait contest ATTENTION KIDS: All you have to do is draw, color or paint a picture that represents Liberty Lake.

This can be an event, a favorite public place or something else showing what the community means to you. The judges will select artwork that most represents the spirit of the community to include in the next edition of the Liberty Lake Community Directory.

This year’s contest is open to elementary-age students who live or attend school in Liberty Lake. Each entry must have the artist’s name, age, school, grade and contact information attached.

Only one original entry is allowed per person.

Entries must be delivered to The Splash office by Friday, Sept. 30. The Splash is located at 2310 N. Molter Rd., Ste. 305, Liberty Lake, WA 99019. Prizes will be awarded and we will print many of the pictures in our community directory.
