Local actor reflects on road to success as performing artist

For almost 20 years, actor Tim Behrens has teamed up with local author Pat McManus to pull off a handful of successful comedic one-man plays performed nationwide. In 2009, Behrens took over marketing at the Rockin’ B Ranch and brought the McManus act to its summer stage.

In light of Rockin’ B Ranch owners’ announcement to retire the Cowboy Supper Show, Behrens will perform his final act at the ranch Sept. 11 with “Scrambled McManus,” a compendium of the four other shows written by McManus.

show,” Behrens explained. “Summers are usually devoted to music and outdoor shows, country stars and bluegrass — stuff like the Rockin’ B. Surprisingly, in the summers at the ranch, the McManus plays worked. I’ve done 11 or 12 performances there over three summers, and all but one has sold out.”

The Splash recently sat down with Behrens to find out more about the McManus plays and where he will be found once the Rockin’ B ceases production.

Q. A.

You’ve made a name for yourself as an actor with these one-man shows. What in your life prepared you for where you are now?

I grew up in New York City, and my parents were both in theater and TV and movies. Amzie Strickland is my mom’s name. She was a character actress on TV from 1955 to 2001, and before that she was big in radio in New York.

My dad was a writer both in New York and Hollywood. He wrote comedic material.

I had wonderful experiences when I was a kid. Going on the set of TV shows and visiting my mom at the theater with really powerful people — she introduced Jack Lemmon to his wife, Felicia Farr. We became friends with the Lemmons, and every Christmas and Thanksgiving I’d go there. To sit there and listen when you’re a kid to these people and to know them — it’s a wonderful experience, but it’s also terrifying. You know

Owners Brett and Lisa McHaffie prepare to open the doors at Just Chillin’ Frozen Yogurt early next week.

A press release said the agreement provides LaunchPad with resources to help manage and oversee its membership and sponsorship programs.

“We know our team will compliment and leverage the expertise and market position LaunchPad already enjoys in the region,” Supreme & Company President Linda Davis said.

Supreme & Company provides image, concessions, marketing and sponsorship for clients and customers. According to the release, the Supreme Sports Marketing team has decades of experience working with clients such as the Spokane Shock and the city of Spokane parks and recreation department.

“If we can do it in Liberty Lake, we’re going to do it here,” Brett McHaffie said.

“We’re really focusing on local business.”

He went on to explain that the couple used local business as much as possible to get things off the ground — everything from accountants to insurance, logo design and fruit at the market.

LLCA hosts grand re-opening Liberty Lake Children’s Academy is holding a grand re-opening 10 a.m. Tuesday at its new facility, 1322 N. Stanford Lane.

themselves to huckleberry, Reese’s peanut butter, New York cheesecake, chocolate, French vanilla or sorbet soft serve, just to name a few.

From there, yogurt lovers can move on to a selection of 48 toppings — everything from cocoa puffs to candy, sauces or fresh fruit. Once loaded up, the treats are weighed and paid for by the ounce.

The owners have more than just ice-cold treats to encourage customers to “just chill.”

The McHaffies hope to add to the yogurteating experience by providing a wireless internet connection, running holidaythemed contests and finding ways for patrons to give back to local charities.

The couple designed the shop themselves, picking out details like light-up counter tops, red trim and art pieces they’ve found “here and there.”

And still with the stresses that come along with opening a new business, the McHaffies said they are enjoying every moment. Both owners have worked extensively in sales, but “owner” is the title they’ve been dying to see on their business cards.

The couple has hired about 10 parttime employees to keep the yogurt flowing smoothly.

“It’s always been the goal,” Lisa McHaffie said. “We’ve been married for three years, and our life goal has always been to save up for our own business like this.”

After 17 years of entertaining the Inland Northwest, Rockin’ B Cowboy Supper Show hosts Scott and Pamela Brownlee announced last week that this season will be the last. The decision came more as a revelation for the two, who simply say “it’s time.”

Excited about the newfound freedom, the couple admits saying goodbye is bittersweet, but with nearly two decades of memories in their pockets, and the world at their feet, they say it’s “heavy on the sweet.”

It started with a barn.

“The venue is an entity unto it-

self,” Pamela Brownlee said. “It’s not like Scott and I started and said, ‘OK we’re going to do this, and it’s going to look like this.’

It just evolved. Maybe we’re responsible because we allowed it to happen.”

When plotting the move from California in 1992, the couple looked exclusively at properties with a barn capable of housing the family’s two horses. After quick negotiations, the Brownlees were moved in at 3912 N. Spokane Bridge Road in less than a month. And in that time, both horses died.

when saying the business has been the hardest, yet most gratifying work they’ve ever done. In the early years, the two cooked dinners themselves, played in the band, and then washed dishes after everyone left.

“We’d do it again, but it’s a good thing we didn’t know how hard it was before we got started,” Pamela Brownlee said.

Over time and little by little, the place took the shape it has today, though not without a fair share of sweat and tears.

After a couple years, they decided to upgrade the hay bale seats to picnic tables.

“The floor boards and the picnic tables are all 1 inch plywood pieces that came from the old Spokane arena,” Scott Brownlee said. “Each piece was 10 feet long and 33 inches wide and 1.25 inches thick. Pammie and I picked them all up, loaded and unloaded them all on our own.”

The Brownlees finger prints are on everything from those wooden floorboards, to the giant lettering on the barn roof, to the décor salvaged from family homes.

“You do what you do because you know what your goal is and you know it’s going to make things better,” said Pamela Brownlee, thinking about the workload. “You don’t think about it; you just do it.”

For a couple hours every weekend, the lights, the music and the laughter smooth over any frustrations that might have been harbored backstage. The Brownlees cringe when talking about their business skills.

“We’re musicians,” Pamela Brownlee said. “Performance music, that’s our skill set. Business is not.”

Despite the challenges, the couple stayed afloat on advice from friends and a commitment to each other that was declared as the utmost priority.

“Being musicians, we just thought, ‘Oh we can practice a little and people will come.’” Scott Brownlee added. “I think we really underestimated how much work it would be.”

The show itself started with Scott and Pamela Brownlee, plus a guitar player and a fiddler, and followed a simple feed-and-entertain formula.

“It was very small,” Pamela Brownlee said. “It was a lot of ’30s and ’40s cowboy music, and that’s what most of our music was all along. This year, we moved away from that into more western swing, which is really fun because it’s five-part harmony, and it’s really a nice place to go from where we’ve been. All that flavor is still there; it’s just a little more sophisticated.”

These days, the entertainment reaches far beyond the Brownlees’ music. Before the real show starts, special guests always warm up the audience as they settle into their seating. The owners see it as a way to showcase regional talent.

An audience-involved shootout-style comedy draws the crowd outside while staff put the finishing touches on dinner. One of Scott Brownlee’s alter egos — Dusty Bicuspid, a toothless deputy — nabs a couple train robbers, blows up an outhouse and swears in a jury with a round of high fives.

Still, the heart of the supper show doesn’t present itself until after a hearty barbecue dinner.

When the lights go down, the Riders of the Rockin’ B take stage.

“Scott does all the arrangements, so the show is basically his, and we get to learn it and make it come to life,” Pamela Brownlee said.

This year, the band started practicing Scott’s first song written for the season in January.

The stage show rounds up a handful of musical numbers to feature each band member, while other acts draw in the audience. A dance number brings in most of the staff and laughter peaks when Dusty Bicuspid returns for the children’s story.

When asked about favorite memories, Pamela Brownlee tears up telling a story about a military veteran who was recognized as part of the regular routine. Later, they found out no one had ever honored him that way before.

“That was such a moment in our lives to hear feedback like that,” Pamela Brownlee said.

A midsummer night’s performance Montana Shakespeare in the Parks showcases ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ at Pavillion Park

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will provide a “high-quality, entertaining, magical event” when they land in Liberty Lake next week, artistic director Joel Jahnke said.

The touring company will present “Much Ado About Nothing” 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pavillion Park. The outdoor theatrical performance is a couple hours long with no intermission and is appropriate for the entire family, Jahnke said.

Sponsored by Friends of Pavillion Park, the free event is the first performance ever by the Shakespeare group in the state of Washington.

“We’ve been close when we played in Coeur d’Alene,” Jahnke said. “We play northern Wyoming and Idaho, and we cannot wait to get into Washington.”

FOPP board member Laura Frank said a local resident saw MSIP perform in Montana and recommended that FOPP invite them to Liberty Lake.

“We love getting this feedback and continue to strive to provide opportunities for great free entertainment for the community,” she said. “We are thrilled to be adding this to our Summer Festival and are hopeful that this will become an annual event.”

The play, “Much Ado About

Nothing,” is a romantic comedy about two very different couples. The plot revolves around the obstacles in the way of the marriage of two young lovers, Hero and Claudio, as well as the “merry war of the sexes” between two verbal sparring partners, Benedick and Beatrice.

Performances for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, an outreach program of Montana State University, are supported by grants, corporate sponsorships and individual donations.

In its 39th season, the troupe hit the road in June for a 10-week tour with only four days off the whole summer, Jahnke said.

“It’s probably the most demanding yet richly rewarding tour in America,” he said. “But we play to some of the best audiences ever.”

The troupe will give 75 performances this summer to an anticipated audience of more than 30,000, he said, in communities ranging from big cities like Missoula and Helena to rural communities such as Birney, Mont., population 17.

For 38 years, Jahnke said the group has traveled a single-lane road to perform at a fire lookout tour in Birney to a mix of farmers, ranchers and Native Americans.

The cast is made up of 10 professional actors, chosen by auditions, many of whom play multiple roles in the production. For this particular season, there are four returning cast members.

“I try to pick half veterans and half new (members) so we have some continuity as well as some fresh ideas,” Jahnke said.

In addition to the actual play, Frank said the Shakespeare group will be hosting a stage combat demonstration from 4:30 to 5 p.m. for those interested in learning more about performance techniques. She also said the Liberty Lake Municipal Library has a Shakespeare exhibit on display for residents.

Leaving on a high note “I was telling someone the other day that retiring the cowboy supper show is kind of like letting a child go,” Scott Brownlee said.

“There’s a sadness in that, but there’s also excitement. We get to be empty nesters!”

Topping the list of things they’ll miss is the family-like staff. Many come back year after year and have grown up at the Rockin’ B. Still, the Brownlees are ready to finally take some time for themselves.

“The summer vacation thing really is a nonexistent category in our lives,” Pamela Brownlee said. “We got to our 30-year wedding anniversary this year in June and couldn’t celebrate it, not like we should have at least.”

The day was packed with rehearsals and planning and performances. By the time the sun set, both felt about 17 years worth of exhaustion, and calling it quits started to sound like it wasn’t such a bad idea.

“Just to be able to say we don’t know what we’ll be doing next summer is really a sweet thing,” Pamela Brownlee said. “People have asked, ‘isn’t it bittersweet?’ It is bittersweet, but it’s heavy on the sweet. With all the feedback we’re getting from people, we know we’ve made a difference.”

The 17th season will continue through Oct. 1, and ticket information is available at

When the final curtain is pulled, both Brownlees plan to keep their bread-andbutter jobs — he works as a professor at UCLA and Loyola Marymount three days a week during the school year while she teaches voice lessons from home on the ranch. And they plan to stick around as familiar faces in the community.

As far as the barn goes, the Brownlees are open to suggestions.

“Where is it going from here?” Pamela Brownlee asked herself. “It’s had a mind of its own most of the time it’s been open as the Rockin’ B Cowboy Supper Show. I imagine it still has a mind of its own, and it’ll become whatever it’s supposed to be. We don’t have any plans for it except for staying open to whatever it’s supposed to be.”

Letters to the Editor Change in government not best option for majority While reading the July 21 Splash cover story about Mary Munger’s petition drive, I experienced a range of emotions, foremost among them astonishment, cynicism and trepidation. Citizens must consider the political motivations behind this petition as well as its potential outcomes.

Under the current mayor-council system, “we the people” hold the executive (mayor) authority accountable through the ballot box. Munger’s petition proposes changing it to a council-manager model that empowers the municipal council to choose for us the executive (CEO) authority, depriving residents of that right. Having a strong mayor elected by the residents of Liberty Lake provides both a check and a balance on the two major factions that frequently turn the council meetings into

According to the 2010 census, the city of Liberty Lake has a population of 7,591.

Munger’s petition drive obtained 239 validated names, or just under 12 percent of the number of registered voters who participated in the last election. It would be a stretch to interpret this statistic as representing a groundswell of popular support to change our current government structure. If this Trojan Horse initiative succeeded in the forthcoming November election, the result would be a “better government” for the minority, not for the majority of citizens in our small municipality.

I therefore strongly urge my fellow residents to vote a resounding “no” to Munger and Company’s skullduggery, and to vote “yes” for Steve Peterson’s bid to serve as our accountable mayor once again. We truly need proven and effective leadership at the helm of our local government to prevent further erosion of our democratic rights and traditions in a municipality that is, ironically, named in their honor.

‘Improvements’ making little to no improvement I am writing to express my concerns about the "improvements" to Valleyway east of Molter. Several weeks ago, a road construction crew removed 2-3 feet of roadway on the south side of the road, replacing it with 3-4 feet of asphalt, thus widening it by about 1 foot. My understanding is that this was done to provide a path for bikes and pedestrians on Valleyway.

Whoever planned this failed to note that there exists an 8-foot-wide paved path on the north side of this portion of Valleyway already, separated by a ditch/gravel/grass from the roadway. My wife and I believe that the existing path is far superior — and

The existing path extends virtually the entire distance from Molter to North Lakeside Road. While it would be appropriate to extend the existing path along North Lakeside Road, the work on Valleyway was superfluous, especially in these economic times.

My further understanding is the City Council was concerned for the safety of schoolchildren walking to school along this path. While I applaud the sentiment, I would suggest the existing path is far safer than the extension of the roadway. No children live here. We walk along the existing path frequently and almost never see unaccompanied elementary school aged children, although they are frequently seen on the sidewalk along Molter.

I emailed Mayor Van Orman with my comments, with no reply. I read with interest the letter to the editor by Mary Munger (Aug. 4 Splash) indicating her concerns for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists along Valleyway. I trust both the mayor and Ms. Munger have actually walked or driven along Valleyway east of Molter. If not, perhaps they should.

My neighbors and I are given to understand that the "improvements" were paid for by a grant, not by our tax dollars. Would it not be refreshing if government officials would decline the opportunity to spend money needlessly, even if they could do so?

Bicycle event made possible by community of support The Baddlands Cycling Team thanks our River District neighbors, the city of Liberty Lake, Greenstone Corp., Home Depot and others for supporting the 4th annual River District Criterium bicycle race held Aug. 9.

Greenstone provided public relations,

organizational support, street cleaning and low prices for Veraci Pizza. Home Depot lent us the barriers to protect racers from trees and other hazards along the course.

Fulfilling its mission to keep Liberty Lake connected, The Splash did a wonderful job publicizing our event. We could not race without our course marshals who serve to keep the racers safe — thanks to Tom Specht and the Baddlands club volunteers.

Turning down the volume is act of common courtesy In response to “boomer mom” Melissa (“Stereo complaint overblown,” Aug. 11 Splash letter to the editor), I too like to listen to the radio in the car. I like Christian talk programs, and occasionally certain ministers get very fire-and-brimstone loud. When this happens, if I am cruising through a residential area or at a stop light, I turn down the volume. It's called courtesy, good manners, thoughtfulness. Yes, I have a right to listen to what I want, but I don't have a right to force others to.

As far as your comment that your son does not drink or do drugs, well that reminds me of a relative who once told me the same thing regarding his two sons. He said, "They don't smoke, drink or do drugs, so it's perfectly OK that they are not working or going to school.” Yeppers, the two boys, who are in their mid- and late-20s, are still living with Mama and Dada. But hey, they’re good kids.

Q: Now that the owners of the Rockin’ B Ranch have decided to retire the Cowboy Supper Show, where will fans be able to find you next summer?

A: Next summer I don’t know where I’ll be. There are several places around here where it could be good, but I don’t know. You can always visit the website, www.mcmanusplays.com, to see where I’m touring.

I kind of like the format of the Rockin’ B where you have the dinner. In the summer, people don’t go to indoor theater much unless

it’s funky like the Rockin’ B. Generally a lot of stuff takes place at outdoor venues and funky venues with food and performance. I’ll be looking for those kinds of venues.

I’m not too worried. Pat’s pretty popular and of the 1,500 performances I’ve done over the last 19 years, probably a hundred or more have been in the Spokane area. I still sell out all the time.

Q: Do you think you’ll keep doing this forever?

A: Well, forever for me, yeah. I mean, as long as I can, I will. I’m very thankful that there is that audience of Pat’s that’s now become an audience of mine. We have created a following, and it’s pretty cool.

Q: Trouble?

A: No, that’s a friend. This is someone whose ideas and plans get you into the hospital or jail.

That’s Crazy Eddie. He’s the instigator for all these terrible things that happen to Pat and Eddie. It starts when they’re about 7 years old and goes up all the way into their teenage years.

Q: What is your favorite part about all of it?

A: I love hearing the laughter of the audience. Sometimes the laughter is so loud, I kid you not, it hurts my ears. It’s those kinds of moments when you realize the power of laughter. Comedy is just as powerful if not more so than tragedy.

I also love driving. Most of the time, I drive everywhere I go. I drive to Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota.

I drive all the time in the Pacific Northwest. I love it. This county is gorgeous, and if you plan a little ahead, you can see some beautiful roads.

Q: Do you have a favorite place to tour?

A: Certainly Alaska. I’ve done two tours in Alaska, and I’d like to do a third. The place I keep consistently coming back to where I feel more and more at home is the Idaho-Montana area. Some-

He wondered if his material could also be written for the stage as a one-man show. I said, “OK, why don’t we try it?”

Q: Was it trial-and-error at first, or did it take off right away?

A: He began cranking it out.

Oct. 2, 1992, we did our first show at the Panida Theatre in Sandpoint. We sold out, and there were 300 people outside begging to get in. He’s quite popular around here.

He’s written 24 books now and sold about 7 million copies and won tons of awards. It had a base, and we saw by that first show that it could work on the stage.

Q: When did you start touring?

A: It wasn’t an easy path, but I began touring regularly in 1993.

I didn’t even know what touring was. I toured the northern tier — about a 30-state area and two provinces. … It’s getting bigger each year, so this year I’ll probably do about 55 or 60 shows outside of Washington.

Q: Do you have a favorite character?

A: I don’t have any favorite shows. Each show is different. I have a favorite character and that’s Crazy Eddie Muldoon. Pat grew up poor in northern Idaho near Sandpoint. He’s the instigator. Pat began writing about these two kids — one of them was himself, and the other one is Crazy Eddie.

that for every Jack Lemmon and Amzie Strickland, there are people that don’t make it. There were two years in the row where the tension was so high in the house because she hadn’t had an acting job that people coming in from the street would walk in and say, “What’s wrong here?”

Q: It sounds like you essentially inherited the acting genes.

A: I actually avoided it until I was 30. Then I started acting here in Spokane at the Spokane Civic Theatre.

Q: What was it that finally pushed you into acting?

A: I was living with a woman, and she said, “Boy, you are really antsy. You’ve got to get a hobby or something and get out of the house.”

I was writing for the Spokesman-Review at the time. I was a writer and correspondent for them for four years. I said, “OK, what should I do?”

She said, “Well there’s this play.

Your parents have been in plays.

It’s at the Civic Theatre. Go down and audition for a small role.” So I auditioned for a small role, and I got the lead.

Q: Did it just take off from there?

A: That experience made me both terrified and attracted. I got another and another and another, all at the Civic Theatre, until all of the sudden I realized I was putting in a lot of work for no money.

Q: Now you work successfully as a touring artist. How did you make that transition?

A: I’d grown up in a household where you got paid for your work, so I started Center Theater Group here in Spokane. After that fell away, I worked on my Masters of Fine Arts at Eastern Washington University and Pat McManus was my advisor. Just before I graduated, he took me aside and said, “I want to tell you, Tim, I’ve read your stuff now for two years, and I just have to say you’d better stick to acting.”

I had written many award-winning articles for the Spokesman and I loved writing, but my acting style seemed to fit really well with Pat McManus’ writing style in a
