Step one: learn to swim

Valley Girl competitor shares experience of triathlon training from scratch

Last Sunday, the Valley Girl Triathlon kicked off with 74 Liberty Lake participants at the starting line for the womenonly event. For at least one — Sara Andre — the event was a first step into the world of triathlons.

In fact, before signing up for the 1/3mile swim, 12-mile bike and 3-mile run, she didn’t know how to swim.

“It’s not like I didn’t like water,” Andre said. “I scuba dive and I snorkel, but I just never learned how to swim.”

After about nine months of practice and training, she said she felt ready, though nervous, about the race. The Splash caught up with Andre and her friend, Kathi Shirley — the one who convinced her to sign up — just after they picked up their race packets Friday, and a day and a half before the big race.

Over the next half hour — and a lot of laughter — the two friends shared their experience through signing up, training and getting ready for the big day.

Let’s start off talking a little bit about your inspiration for this.

What convinced you to sign up?

Andre: We were talking about this over lunch today. It all started over a glass of wine. We were out at dinner with our husbands, and I think I said to Kathi, “Hey, are you going to do the Valley Girl this year?”

We started talking more and more about it and how so many people we never would have expected to do something like that had done it. Eventually, she said, “You want to do it?”

I told her I’d never learned to swim, but it’d always been on my list of things to do.

You know how that goes. We all have lot of things on that list that we never really get around to doing.

So finally (as I had another sip of wine), Kathi says, “I’ll sign you up!” And I said, “OK.” Q: So did you start training right away?

Police Report The following incidents, arrests, calls for service and citations were reported by the Liberty Lake Police Department July 2-9.

Incidents and arrests • Residential burglary — At 3 p.m. July 2, LLPD received a report of a residential burglary at the 23000 block of East Remington Lane. The complainant reported that sometime between June 28 and 29, unknown suspects entered the residence through an open garage door and took a checkbook.

• Domestic violence — A 44-year-old Liberty Lake man was arrested at 5:30 p.m. July 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the 1400 block of North Cavalier Court for domestic violence assault. Officers were dispatched to the location for a report of several subjects physically fighting. The investigation resulted in the subject’s arrest. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail.

• Garage burglary — At 3:40 a.m. July 4, LLPD was dispatched to an attempted garage burglary and theft at the 21200 block of East Country Vista Drive. A witness reported seeing two males in an open garage at the apartment complex, and when the suspects saw the witness they quickly left the area in a green Honda or Acura. The investigation determined

the suspects had pushed a motorcycle that was parked outside of the garage to the inside of the garage that had other property inside. The owner reported the suspects caused minor damage to the motorcycle.

• Argument — At 6:15 p.m. July 5, LLPD was requested to assist the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office with an argument in the area of Darin Road and Wellesley Avenue. A caller reported a female bicyclist was arguing with a male subject who was in a vehicle.

• False alarm — At 9:35 a.m. July 6, LLPD was dispatched to a residential alarm at the 23000 block of East Maxwell Drive. Officers determined the alarm was false.

• Trouble unknown — At 3:15 p.m. July 5, LLPD was requested to assist the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office with a trouble unknown call in the area of Malvern Road and Wellesley Avenue. Initially, 911 received a hang-up call from the area. On callback, a female said there was an emergency and the police would need a search warrant, then she hung up the phone. On another callback, the caller reported that everything was fine now and she didn’t need help. Officers determined the calls

were made from a prepaid cell phone, and dispatch was attempting to trace it to an address. Officers were able to contact the caller by phone, and she stated she was leaving the house and going to a shelter and that everything was fine. Officers attempted to locate the caller but could not find her.

• Malicious mischief — At 10:30 a.m.

July 5, LLPD was requested to assist the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office with a disturbance and malicious mischief incident at the 24000 block of East Rosewood Avenue in Newman Lake. The initial call was a domestic violence incident between the complainant and her ex-boyfriend. While arguing over a vehicle, it was determined the ex-boyfriend disabled a vehicle by pulling wires. He admitted to disabling the vehicle and agreed to fix it. The case was referred to the Sheriff’s Office.

• DUI — At 7:10 p.m. July 5, an LLPD officer was almost struck head-on on his way home on State Road 27. The officer stopped the offending vehicle and determined the driver was driving under the influence. The driver told the officer he didn’t know he had crossed the center line. Washington State Police arrived on scene and arrested the subject for DUI.

Weekly SPeCial:

• Domestic violence — At noon July 5, LLPD received report of a domestic violence protection order violation at the 25000 block of East Hawkstone Loop.

The complainant told officers the suspect violated a no-contact order. The violation occurred between June 29 and July 2. The case was assigned to Detective Ray Bourgeois for follow-up investigation.

• False alarm — At 12:40 p.m. July 7, LLPD was dispatched to a residential alarm at the 1800 block of North Willamette Road. Officers determined the alarm was false.

• Unknown trouble — At 11:45 p.m.

July 6, LLPD was dispatched to an unknown trouble in the 1400 block of North Cavalier Court. A complainant reported hearing screaming from a neighboring house where there had been domestic issues in the past. Officers located the home, made contact with the occupants and determined the homeowner was babysitting two children, and there were no signs of any problems.

• Residential burglary — At 9:40 a.m. July 7, LLPD received a report of a residential burglary at the 23000 block of East Settler Road. The complainant

News Briefs Budget hearing is Tuesday

Monsey earns business degree

A public hearing on the city of Liberty Lake’s 2013 budget will be held 7 p.m.

Tuesday in conjunction with the regularly scheduled City Council meeting. Members of the public will be invited to provide comment on plans for the upcoming year’s budget.

The meeting is in the City Hall Council Chambers, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

Kristen Monsey of Liberty Lake graduated from the University of Dallas in May with a bachelor’s degree in business leadership. Monsey was one of approximately 300 students to receive a degree from the Catholic university based in Irving, Texas.

LL students graduate from NIC North Idaho College listed several Liberty Lake students among 900 who graduated earlier this spring, including Alisha Fleury, Brittany Foster, Justine Groome, Kyle Kallestad and Lori Wharton.

NIC is a comprehensive community college based in Coeur d’Alene.

A: Andre: We did. Bruce, my husband, and I joined the gym so we could get in the pool. I was absolutely terrible. I started going to the pool about three times a week in late October. I had a lot of advice from friends that kept me with plenty to work on, and then I finally hired a swimming coach out of Coeur d’Alene. Kathi and I both took some lessons from him.

Q: How did things go with the swim coach?

A: Andre: It was great for me. He was good at taking what little stroke I had and taking it apart and putting it back together and turning it into something that worked. It turns out, I love it. I’ll continue swimming because I love it so much.

Q: Is there a particular part of the race you’re excited about for race day?

A: Andre: I’m most nervous about the swim. I think that’s probably why they start off with that leg. People I talk to that are about my age that grew up in this part of the country never learned how to swim. I don’t know why. I don’t know if we didn’t have access to pools or what, but a lot of us never learned to swim.

I’ll probably be most comfortable on the bike. I’ve never been a runner. I wasn’t planning to become a runner, but I started thinking, I’d get caught up in the excitement of the event and that’ll carry me through. I only run about three miles a week, but I’m starting to like it. My heart rate monitor is my running buddy.

Q: Aside from swimming, are there any other things you’ve learned along this journey?

A: Andre: Well, I’ve learned that it’s all about me for right now, which is really weird. You really have to focus on yourself.

Shirley: It takes a certain level of selfishness to train. To go from where we were — which was not couch potatoes, but not far from there — to being able to do it and compete really took a time commitment.

Fortunately, my kids are old enough now to be able to help. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to do it. I don’t know how moms of young kids do it. It’s just so much time.

If you’re doing two activities a day, that’s 40 minutes each. Then you’ve got stretching time and getting there and it adds up to a couple hours a day.

Andre: We’ve just started to get used to it. I don’t want to stop now, because we’ve enjoyed training so much. Really, what’s been cool, my husband now swims with me. He can’t run, but he rides with me, too. Now he’s training to do the Long Bridge Swim in early August.

Q: Is the fact that it’s a women-only event a draw for you guys?

A: Shirley: Absolutely. I’ve done it one time before, and I was totally blown away by the amount of support other people

give you in the race. The people you’re running with are yelling for you to keep going, and the people that are watching from the sides are cheering. So yes, the women-only thing is important. If you’re starting with men, it can be intimidating.

And it’s only 600 competitors, so it’s not a terribly huge event. I like that.

Andre: I’d never even seen a triathlon until the recent Ironman. I went down to see the swim start, and it was really impressive. At the same time, I can’t imagine myself ever even doing one of those three legs. That’s huge.

Shirley: Well, it all starts with a little Valley Girl Triathlon! I’ve already heard you ask what we’re going to do next.

Andre: Well, maybe we’ll do the Wunder Woman Triathlon (in Medical Lake Aug. 19) next. We have to see how this one goes first. We’ve done all this training, and we have all the equipment we know we need. It’s amazing the things you end up needing.

Q: What is the most off-the-wall thing you guys ended up buying that you never would have though of if you hadn’t signed up for a triathlon?

A: Shirley: Probably the quick-tie shoelaces.

Andre: Oh, yeah, we’ve got to get those hooked up. We still haven’t even put them in our shoes or tried them out.

Shirley: They’re like elastic shoelaces with a clasp on the end, so you just slip your shoes on and tighten them and take off running. It supposedly saves you a little time in the transition. You don’t have to tie your shoes.

Q: Did you get any equipment that took getting used to?

A: Andre: The wetsuit. The first day in a wetsuit I was so disheartened when we finished that swim that I didn’t even sleep that night. It was also my first open-water swim. I just felt like I’d spent six months of trying to learn to swim, and I had to start all over again. But it got better. It was just completely different from being in a swimming pool. It’s restrictive and buoyant, but it’s all good now. Once I realized how you just float, I realized I could just relax.

Shirley: We actually did our first swim in the lake this morning without the wetsuits, and we decided we’ll do it race day without them. We went a half-mile, and we were warm enough.

Q: It’s nice that you guys are able to test things out like that. Do you feel like you have a home-court advantage?

A: Andre: It is nice. Everyone we run into that hasn’t been in the water, we’ll say, “Come swim. Here’s my cell phone number. Call me and you can get in at my place, or we’ll call you when we’re planning to swim.”

Q: Have you made any new friends

along the way or met new people through your training? Or has it been more about strengthening the bond between friends like the two of you?

A: Andre: Have we bonded?

Shirley: (laughing) Yeah!

Andre: We were friends already, but it’s definitely a different level. We knew each other differently before. We’d go to dinner or maybe the theater or something, but this has been fun.

Shirley: Yeah, we actually call each other or text each other and ask, “What did you do today? What was your workout?”

Andre: We have other friends who are training, too, and they don’t live here, so we haven’t been able to get with them quite as much. I think I would be interested in maybe joining up with a group, because I do like the camaraderie that goes along with it. That doesn’t need to be a women-only group.

Shirley: We’ll have to work on that — maybe make our own, I guess.

Q: Do you have a goal for this weekend?

A: Andre: I want to finish healthily and happily. I’m not interested in the whole competition thing.

Shirley: When I did the Valley Girl last time, I actually ended up backstroking most of the way, but I finished. I finished and had fun. I did that one in just under two hours, and I’d like to trim some of that time off this time. We’ll see.

We went to pick up our packets today and just looking around the tent, I was so surprised to see so many people that I knew. Everyone was excited. It’s just a really good energy.

Valley Girl really is a very supportive and positive environment. You’ve got all types of people out there.

Q: Well it might be too early to tell, but it sounds like you might have caught the bug for triathlons.

A: Andre: It’s still too early to tell. If I finish on Sunday, I’ll probably sign up for another one. If it’s something you like, it makes sense to do three or so a year.

Shirley: It’s a fitness goal. It’s something you can really get into and other people can jump in and work with you along the way.

Instant update: Both Andre and Shirley finished the race Sunday.

Andre said the event was tough — especially the swim — but she still achieved her goal of finishing healthily and happily.

She also said she signed up for the Wunder Woman Triathlon Aug. 19.

Shirley finished the race in one hour and 53 minutes, just ahead of Andre, who finished at two hours and one minute. A list of all Liberty Lake finishers is included on the scoreboard, page 9.

Library to see boost in hours, staffing Narrow Council vote adds $24,000 to current budget

A narrow vote Tuesday will make a big difference on Mondays at the Liberty Lake Municipal Library. The City Council approved a budget amendment in a 4-3 tally, adding $24,000 to the library’s budget for the remainder of the year.

The adjustment will fund a staffing increase in the department. Within the increase, $20,000 will bump part-time adult services librarian Dan Pringle to full-time status, and $4,000 will be allocated to increasing additional clerk hours. Library Director Pamela Mogen said the increased staffing will allow the library to open on Mondays, a change that will most likely take effect in September.

Council discussions on the amendment began May 15 during a presentation for a proposed ordinance to regulate how the library department’s funding is calculated. The same presentation included a staff recommendation to consider a budget amendment applying the provisions

of this policy to the current budget, which was included in a memo in the Council packets for the May 15 meeting and the current meeting.

In addition, Council Member Shane Brickner spoke on behalf of the Council’s finance committee May 15, urging Council members to not only approve the funding ordinance June 5, but also a 2012 budget amendment to include a prorated amount for the current year. The funding ordinance was passed June 5, and a first read of the budget amendment was passed unanimously June 19 with no discussion.

“I support the (June 5) ordinance we passed a couple weeks ago, but I think we’ve already operated further outside of our 2012 budget than I feel comfortable with, and I’d urge the Council not to support this,” Council Member Josh Beckett said of the amendment.

Council Member Odin Langford also questioned whether the amendment was a necessary expense for the current budget.

“The library is a victim of its own success,” Mogen said in an impassioned response to council member concerns. “Frankly, ladies and gentlemen, I cannot do it all. I’ve reached my limit. … I put in 10- and 12-

hour days, and I can’t do it anymore.”

She added the additional funding was targeted to increasing hours for a specific librarian qualified to help her increase services and plan for the future, and the additional library operating hours were a “bonus.”

Beckett proposed tabling the budget amendment vote until the July 16 meeting, but other Council members voted to move forward with the decision. The budget amendment passed with Beckett, Langford and Lori Olander opposing.

Finance Director RJ Stevenson said the budget amendment would take five days to effectively boost the library’s funding.

The library has been open five days — and 40 hours — per week since Jan. 4, 2011, when a new budget took effect that included deep cuts and a new utility tax.

The changes were made at the time to help offset forecasted shortfalls, and at one point in the budgeting process the library faced the possibility of only being open 24 hours per week.

Prior to the 2011 changes, the library was open 46 hours per week, and the Council’s action Tuesday is expected to restore that

number. At the time, Mogen said Monday was the library’s busiest day of the week, but it was cut to maintain weekend hours and consecutive days off for the staff.

In other business: • Stevenson presented a mid-year budget update, with key budgeting dates tentatively scheduled throughout the remainder of the year. A public hearing to gather community feedback on budgeting priorities will be held during the City Council meeting July 17.

• A committee proposed preliminary plans for installing a fitness course with equipment based in city parks to honor fallen military heroes.

• Brickner said the city had formed a team for next week’s Relay For Life event at Meadowwood Technology Campus, and he encouraged people to participate.

“It’s a great cause, and it’s very inspirational,” Brickner said. “I challenge you all to sign up because the more people we have supporting this cause, the better.”

• Before adjourning, the Council held an executive session to discuss litigation and potential litigation.

Around the world in 12 days Community members represent Liberty Lake as delegates to China

Every year, the Spokane Lilac Festival Royal Court travels the region to visit neighboring cities, participate in regional parades and serve area organizations.

This year, they’re taking their tiaras a little further: to China.

Next week the representatives, along with other area delegates including Liberty Lake Mayor Steve Peterson, will visit Jilin, China.

“These are the future leaders of Spokane,” said Liberty Lake Church Assistant Pastor Steve Allen, who will be leading the trip. “These girls are supposed to be the best of the best. What a way to invest in them and give them a worldview that’s so different from anything they’ve ever experienced.”

The Royal Court includes seven young women — including the queen, Liberty Lake resident Sydnee Scofield.

The upcoming trip will mark Allen’s 12th venture to China. Many of the trips he led before worked in orphanages, and some worked doing church development.

However, the upcoming trip will be his first diplomatic experience.

Their trip will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship Spokane shares with Jilin, China.

“At the coronation, they showed a slide show of last year’s Lilac group and what they did,” Allen said. “There are some pretty cool opportunities they’ve had, and it was during that when I really got this vision of what if we did something totally off the wall.”

Because he said he’s always had a heart for China, he thought a service trip to China would be an amazing opportunity for the court.

His daughter, Hannah Allen, was eventually selected as one of the Lilac Festival Princesses, and shortly after he met with the organization president and his wife and pitched his idea.

“They were just totally blown away,” Steve Allen said. “It’s normally more about going to parades in Wenatchee and Seattle, and now we’re talking about taking these kids internationally, really as a representation and delegation of our city. So as we

Allen said his next step was to contact the Spokane Sister City Association. Spokane has four sister cities: Jecheon, Korea; Nishinomiya, Japan; Limerick, Ireland;

and Jilin, China.

“This isn’t one of the cities we get to interact with very much,” Allen said. “The director over there said, ‘Steve, you have no idea how well the timing fits for this. … If you’re willing to lead it, we’ll be part of it.’”

The trip, which departs Monday and returns July 27, starts in Beijing, where the team expects to visit and serve in three orphanages and a state hospital and do a little sightseeing. The group also hopes to meet former Washington governor and current United States Ambassador to China Gary Locke.

Inspiration behind China trip starts close to home

It’s no coincidence that Steve Allen felt passionate about leading the upcoming trip to China; he said he’s always had a passion for the country. In fact, three of his five children were adopted from orphanages there.

The spark, he said, ignited in 1995. He said he was at home watching an episode of 20/20 called “The Dying Rooms,” an undercover expose on orphanages in China. He said the episode showed orphanages unable to care for particular children — whether because of staffing needs or medical needs — and leaving them in a room to die.

“I was sitting in my living room thinking, ‘Wow, this is just meant for me. We’re supposed to do something to help,’” Allen said.

He and his wife, Carrie, continued the conversation for years, until initiating the adoption process in 2000, saying they hoped to make a difference in just one life. In 2002, they adopted Lily, now 10.

“That’s not how we want to come in. …

We’ve decided we want to come in serving the community there.”

The first orphanages they’ll visit specialize in caring for children with special needs. At the hospital, Allen said he hoped for the team to gain perspective for the different healthcare system.

They’ll also deliver gifts and toiletries.

“We’re approaching this looking at how we can build bridges of understanding, especially with the Chinese culture,” Allen said. “How do we begin doing that from a business side, from an educational side, from a pure relational side. …We’re starting to see beyond, ‘Oh what a cool experience,’ to ‘wow, this really could feed into a lot of different areas of our communities.’”

While in Beijing, the group will also have an opportunity to visit landmarks like the Great Wall of China.

Since then, they’ve adopted two more daughters — Abby, now 8, and Grace, now 19.

“You start out thinking, oh, this is going to be a great blessing for her; we’re doing something so nice,” Allen said. “But I feel like they’ve blessed our lives more than they could possible understand.”

Dennis Pegram might even say they’ve blessed lives outside their family, too.

Last year, Grace Allen was interviewed during a service at Liberty Lake Church, and Pegram was in the audience. After listening to her story, he said he and his wife sat in the parking lot after church and decided to start adoption paperwork the next day.

In August last year, his family (wife Kathy and sons Colton and Nathan) traveled to China to adopt Allison, who turns 7 this weekend.

“It’s like she’s been part of our family from day one,” Pegram said. “She walked into the room and gave us this huge hug.

It was just the most amazing moment for all of us.”

“My dad got to stand on the Great Wall,” Peterson said. “I want to take a picture there holding that photo of my dad when he was there.”

Peterson said he also hopes to squeeze in a tour of a new manufacturing plant owned by Itron, a Liberty Lake-headquartered company.

For the next four days, the group will head to Jilin City, where they’ll be greeted and hosted at a state dinner with delegates from Spokane’s sister city.

“We’ll be donning coats and ties and tiaras and representing our area,” Allen said. “Mayor Peterson will be able to represent this mayor-to-mayor bridge while we’re there. … I can’t wait. I think it’s really going to blow people away.”

Peterson said he’s looking forward to sharing perspectives with the Jilin mayor, who oversees the city of 4.4 million.

Allen said the group would spend the next few days in Jilin touring hospitals, orphanages and schools and businesses.

He’s also helping coordinate a movie night.

“We just want to serve in whatever capacity we can,” Pegram said. “There are butterflies in my stomach, and there’s great anticipation for how we can be used to make a difference.”

On the last night, they’ll attend a farewell dinner with Jilin officials before heading home.

“It’ll be 12 fully packed days,” Allen said. “It’s just been awesome to see how the community has come along beside us to support this trip. It’s been everything from buying Frisbees to send with us to writing checks and supporting projects we hope to accomplish while we’re there.”

Bringing it home When the group returns, Allen said it hopes to share the experiences with as many people as possible.

“What we’ve been talking about, at

least from the church’s standpoint, is how we make that bridge from the church into the community,” Allen said. “We really want to work alongside the civic community and do things that are good. … We want to see the church as a place that isn’t this kind of exclusionary entity.”

He said he sees the trip will be a way for the city and the church to serve alongside each other. When they return, he said he would be looking at how to continue that relationship locally.

“After having this interaction with orphaned kids in China, we want to look in our own communities to see how we can serve right here from home,” Allen said.

“What about the kids in the foster care system right here in Spokane? How can we begin to advocate for those kids?”

Steve Allen said about 900 kids are currently cared for through the foster care system in Spokane.

“If we’re able to come home and advocate for those kids and care for them the way we’ve cared for those kids in the orphanages in China, then it’s a total win,” he said.

City responds to Thola suit

The City of Liberty Lake responded June 25 to a lawsuit claiming mistreatment of a longtime employee by reserving all defenses and filing a petition June 28 to move the case to federal court.

The response accounts for the city, as well as individually named defendants Community Development Director Doug Smith and Recreation Coordinator Michelle Griffin. All three defendants are represented by Attorney Michael McFarland of the Spokane-based firm Evans, Craven and Lackie.

Former Trailhead Golf Course Professional Mollie Thola, who was laid off in late 2010, then rehired Jan. 3, 2011, then terminated five months later, filed the lawsuit in the Spokane County Superior Court of Washington June 13. Her husband, Joseph, is also named as a plaintiff.

The couple requests awards for lost wages, emotional stress, mental anguish and legal costs based on claims Thola was subjected to discrimination, harassment and a hostile work environment.

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington must now accept the case or deny the city’s request.

The couple met when Einjer’s father contracted to deliver milk to Larsen’s aunt, who owned what was then Pocahontas Resort at Eloika Lake — Larsen fell in love with the milkman.

Liberty Lake resident Kathy Whybrew spotted this young deer running down Country Vista Drive in the early evening on June 24. She said she also saw the same deer the next day on the 5th hole at Trailhead Golf Course.

They have been members of Millwood Presbyterian Church, presidents of the Danish Bortherhood and Sisterhood International, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop leaders, and members of the Valley Striders and Orchard Avenue Community Center.

The lifelong area residents have two grown children, two grand children, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Liberty Lake telling great story ‘under the bridge’ As Blessings Under the Bridge gears up for a special summer event Saturday (see breakout box), founder Jessica Kovac said she is awed and appreciative of the many ways Liberty Lake businesses and residents are increasingly supporting the organization’s outreach to the homeless population of the Spokane area.

While Saturday’s event has drawn support from all over (including Ben & Jerry’s serving free ice cream), Kovac included the following in a list of nearby businesses she said are bending over backwards to help the Liberty Lake-founded charity: • Otis Grill is donating buns and the grill for 800 people.

• Hay J`s, where Kovac once worked as a waitress, is donating condiments and has supported the organization from the beginning.

• Ten participating Starbucks stores, including Liberty Lake, will serve up iced coffees for hundreds. The coffee giant has also been serving iced coffees at the organization’s regular Wednesday feeds.

• John L. Scott, State Farm Insurance and the Liberty Lake Police Department collect various donations.

• Just Chillin’ and Papa Murphy’s have held promotional fundraisers.

• Liberty Lake Church is delivering and setting up tables and chairs.

• Great Clips Liberty Lake and corporate will be cutting hair at the event and donating 600 combs.

Letters to the Editor Valley Girl volunteers make it a first-class event I would love to take a few minutes to thank everyone involved in the Valley Girl Triathlon. This was my first event four years ago, and it is still my favorite.

This year, I got to race with my daughter, Makena, as she did her first Valley Girl at age 11.

I know this event would not take place without the help of Marla Emde, Robin and the countless sponsors involved. A special thanks to the homeowners that give up their beach on a hot summer day and to all of the volunteers that were out on the course — many who are Liberty Lake residents. Also, thank you to the

residents that put up with extra traffic and a few closed roads for this to take place.

This is a great event, and I love that there are women out there of all ability levels and ages. This year, we had finishers from age 11 to age 81. I am inspired by all involved. Happy racing!

Liberty Lake Liquor navigates changing market with new ownership

Since the passage of Initiative 1183 to end state-run liquor sales last November, Washington’s market for alcohol has undergone a massive overhaul. Here in Liberty Lake, the local store has one additional change: new owners.

Duane and Elaine Harris took over ownership and operations of Liberty Lake Liquor, 1326 N. Liberty Lake Road, on June 1 — the same day the Washington State Liquor Control Board ceased state liquor sales, privatizing the sector.

“I think it’s great how the local people have come in to let us know they’ll continue to shop here and support us,” Elaine Harris said. “We’ve gotten such a positive response, and we’re excited about how things are going.”

Duane Harris was retired for three years before the current venture. Before retiring, he managed and owned Les Schwab Tire stores in Montana. He said he’d like to grow the business at Liberty Lake Liquor and focus operations on customer service, while providing

more specialty items than big-box retailers.

“Running a business is the same whether you’re selling liquor or selling tires — it’s all about customer service,” Duane Harris said.

“If someone comes in looking for something they can’t find, we’ll do whatever we can to get it for them.

It doesn’t matter if it’s high-end or not, we’re going to try our hardest to help people find what they’re wanting.”

Since taking over ownership, the owners said they’re relied on three longtime employees who stayed on through the ownership transition.

“We didn’t know a lot about liquor before taking over the store, but it has quite a checkered history, and it’s been fun to learn about,” Duane Harris said.

He also said they planned to keep the store in its current location with no plans to change any of the layout.

“It’s a neat little store with a great location,” Duane Harris said.

“It’s designed to make it easy to find what you’re looking for.”

The current location was grandfathered into the new system because it was operated by small business owners rather than the state. State regulations for new retailers applying for a Spirits Retail Liquor License require premises to be at least 10,000 square feet.

Additional regulations also impact the new liquor dealers — they can only sell up to 24 liters at a time to on-premises spirits retailers like restaurants and bars, and a license issuance fee of 17 percent of all spirits revenues must be paid to the state licensing board.

Since the new liquor laws went into effect June 1, the Liberty Lake

Liquor owners said they noticed a shift in business, but they aren’t worrying about their future in the ever-changing market.

“Business did briefly fall off somewhat with the transition,” Duane Harris said. “People were excited, and it was kind of a novelty thing, but we’ve seen a lot of people come back that said they missed that personal interaction.

Little by little, people are coming back to us.”

He said the store offers a safe, friendly and clean environment for customers to browse the selection of more than 800 varieties of liquor.

STCU to open 16th branch STCU recently broke ground on a Moran Prairie Branch at 5711 S. Haile Road that’s expected to open by the end of the year, a press release said. It will be the 16th branch for the Liberty Lake-based credit union.

“We recognized the rapid growth in the area in 2008 when we purchased the land,” said Patsy Gayda, STCU Vice President of Branches. “In addition to serving the Moran Prairie community, it will be a convenient stop for STCU members who commute

into Spokane from the northern Palouse.”

Designed by Nystrom+Olson Architecture, the new branch will be similar to the South Valley Branch STCU opened in November. Walker Construction won the $916,000 contract for the 4,096-square-foot building.
