Northwest Medstar Director Eveline Bisson stays busy managing one of the region’s main critical care transport services.

She also, along with a handful of Northwest Medstar employees, calls Liberty Lake home.

“We run into the each other at the grocery store,” Bisson said. “It’s fun. We all love Liberty Lake.”

The Northwest Medstar program, a nonprofit medical service, provides immediate on-scene helicopter response, hospital-tohospital transports and assists with search and rescue missions. The Splash recently caught up with Bisson to learn more about her job managing the program and what challenges arise from her out-of-the-ordinary workdays.

Q. A.

I noticed there were quite a few designations at the end of your name. Did you get started with your nursing degree?

Yeah, I grew up in California, and I originally went to school there to get my nursing degree. Then I got started in my career as a flight nurse in Bakersfield, Calif. I became the chief flight nurse at some point. Then I relocated to Wilmington, N.C. I was there for 10 years at a hospital-based program — it was helicopters and ground ambulances. I was the program director there, and I stayed active with patient transports.

Q: How do you make the jump from a regular nurse to a flight nurse?

Library to host open house In celebration of National Library Week April 8-14, the Liberty Lake Municipal Library will hold an open house April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will feature music by the New Criterion Banjo Orchestra, refreshments, balloons and introductions and presentations to various library resources. Attendees may also win a chance to borrow a Nook or Kindle, a prize that comes with a free book download. A presentation will also be made on the library's entry into the Community Information Network later this year and how that will increase Liberty Lake's access to more than 500,000 items free of charge.

To prepare for the event, the library will close for one hour at 5 p.m. April 12 only.

• Parking violation — After issuing two warnings to the same vehicle, officers cited the owner of a semi parked on North Knudson Street and Colleen Court.

The first warning was for left wheels to curb and the second was for commercial vehicle parked in a neighborhood.

• Vehicle prowl — At the Liberty Lake Athletic Club, a set of keys was taken from a patron, and he reported his wallet and some cash missing from his car. The Discover card company alerted the patron to the misuse of his card. The same day, another person reported keys missing that were found in the parking lot.

• Fraud — LLPD received a case forwarded from the Post Falls Police Department for fraud that happened at the Liberty Lake Starbucks — the chosen meeting place for the sale of an Apple computer. The computer was sold for $1,300, and the check was found to be fraudulent when the seller tried to cash it. The name on the check has not been proven to be the person who bought the computer, and the phone number was an Arizona number.

• Drug paraphernalia — After stopping a vehicle for speeding, an officer noted a distinct odor of marijuana. When asked about the odor, the driver said it could have been from a friend who smoked, and she granted the officer permission to search the car. During the search, a 2-year-old child was in the car seat, and he told the officer a smoking device found in the car belonged to his mother, who was no longer in the car. The pipe was confiscated.

• False alarm — At 6 a.m. March 29, LLPD responded to a commercial alarm at George Gee automotive. During the investigation, officers determined an em-

ployee had entered the wrong code.

• Suspicious person — LLPD responded to a call regarding a man on his roof. It turned out to be a chimney sweep working late in the evening.

• Warrant arrest — While on patrol at Gateway Park, an officer ran the plate of a parked vehicle to see if it was registered to an individual with an outstanding warrant. A warrant was confirmed for a traffic violation, and the operator was transported to jail.

• Drug paraphernalia — LLPD responded to a caller reporting a marijuana pipe that was found on the ground at Pavillion Park. The pipe was taken to the department for destruction.

• Noise complaint — LLPD responded to two calls regarding a noise complaint at Big Trout Lodge. Officers contacted offending units, warning the party to keep noise levels down.

• Malicious mischief — A vending machine at the Liberty Lake Chevron was vandalized sometime overnight March 31.

News Brief Avista files rate increase request Avista filed its general rate request this week with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission seeking recovery of costs associated with capital investments and operations and maintenance expenses. The UTC has up to 11 months to review the filings and issue a decision.

According to an Avista press release, if the Commission approves the requests, an electric residential customer in Washington using an average of 989 kilowatt hours per month would see an increase of 6.3 percent or $4.94 per month, inclusive of the proposed Energy Recovery Mechanism (ERM) rebate, or about 16 cents a day, for a revised bill of $83.91. Natural gas customers in Washington using an average of 68 therms

per month would see an increase of 6.9 percent or $4.23, or about 14 cents a day, for a revised monthly bill of $65.78.

“We need to invest approximately $250 million each year for the next three to five years to continue updating and maintaining our system to serve our customers’ energy needs,” Avista CEO Scott Morris said.

“When we replace or update old equipment with new equipment and technology, it costs many times more than when it was installed. This was the primary reason for the proposed increase in our last request and it is expected to continue to cause a need for increased rates in the future.”

Included in the filings is a proposal to help ease the burden of the increase on lowincome customers with increased funding for Avista’s energy assistance programs.

Understanding autism

Parents share the highs and lows of managing the mysterious disorder

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and it’s almost five times more common among boys.

As public awareness for the disorder grows with movements like April’s global Autism Awareness Month, advocates are gaining ground. Still, families affected face just as many challenges as ever.

“People don’t realize there’s a whole spectrum,” said Anna Lutes, a Liberty Lake mom raising a son with autism. “I think we’re all autistic to some degree – it’s just a matter of when it’s off balance and affects your daily life.”

Understanding goes a long way, Lutes said, but research and advancements in treatments go further. So much about the disorder remains a mystery to families affected by it.

Finding the right diagnosis According to the CDC, studies have shown that parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) notice a developmental problem before their child’s first

birthday. Concerns about vision and hearing were more often reported in the first year, and differences in social, communication, and fine motor skills were evident from 6 months of age, still most children are not diagnosed until after the age of 4.

“A lot of times kids are first diagnosed with either ADD or OCD or anxiety or something like that,” Lutes said. “Then, later they’re diagnosed with autism, and I think that’s really hard for parents because you’re trying to figure out what’s different and what’s wrong here.”

Northwest Autism Founder and Executive Director Dawn Sidell said a challenge for diagnosing the disorder is the lack of nationwide standards.

“Across the nation, we have a variety of approaches to screening, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, intervention and support,” Sidell explained. “There is no standardized approach, and that makes it difficult for families living in different communities to access similar services. … Sometimes you have a family that’s noticed a red flag in their child’s development and they need to have that evaluated. They might struggle to find someone who has the right tools to do that evaluation.”

Despite a spike in the rate of autism, Sidell noted the age when children are diagnosed seems to have stagnated.

“That really is a huge issue for parents,” Sidell said. “When they aren’t able to get their child screened and diagnosed early, then they also aren’t able to access treatment and intervention. Research is indicating that early intervention is a powerful tool in helping children progress.”

In recent years, a number of tools have been developed to help doctors evaluate patients at risk for the disorder, but specialists in the growing field are still hard to find.

“Even if you have a tool, it helps a great deal if the person using the tool is familiar with Autism Spectrum Disorder in different age groups and how it’s expressed,” Sidell said. “Clinical judgment is also an important piece of appropriate screening.”

Locally, the Northwest Autism Center holds free screening clinics quarterly in partnership with Imagine! Behavioral Health Services. Sidell said recent screenings have seen a rate of 50 to 60 percent positive. The next event will be in early June.

Lutes, who started a support group for families called Different Not Less that meets in Liberty Lake, said she and her peers have been constantly searching for occupational therapists and counselors that specialize in autism and support for families and siblings. So far, they’ve come up empty handed.

Making sense of the disorder “Some families get a diagnosis and literally, that’s all they get,” Sidell said. “They go in and the doctor might give them a phone number, but sometimes they don’t even get that. … Unfortunately, there isn’t always a supportive approach to sharing that information. On top of that, they get very little direction on what they should do next.”

Sidell, also a registered nurse, first began navigating the ins and outs of autism after her son’s diagnosis more than a decade ago.

“It seemed like the first few years after my son was diagnosed, I had a constant migraine just from trying to absorb all of this information that I hadn’t needed before,” Sidell said. “That’s why parents

often look to other families to help them through that process.”

Lutes first faced the challenge of understanding autism and how to treat it after her son was diagnosed in 2007.

“I didn’t really know much about it,” Lutes said. “Everyone usually assumes it’s like Rain Man. That’s all that I really knew, too. I just had really limited resources and couldn’t find good doctors or therapists. I didn’t really know what to do or where to

cover story start, and it seemed like everywhere I tried to get in had a really long waiting list. It was like a six- to nine-month wait just to get in to see a counselor.”

In August 2010 she founded a support group that meets in Liberty Lake. About 20 families participate in the group that meets monthly to share information and resources. They also squeeze in play dates and potlucks.

“This has really put a face on autism for me and all the things families struggle with,” Lutes said. “I thought I had it bad, you know. It’s amazing to see what this group has done to change people’s lives

Northwest Autism Center supports, serves families Tom Sherry hosting May 12 fundraiser

Since gaining non-profit status in 2003, the Northwest Autism Center has expanded its coverage as well as programming.

The center serves a database of more than 1,000 families regionally, including many from Liberty Lake, Executive Director Dawn Sidell said. In addition, about 15 new families call for assistance every month.

In 2005, the center launched its key program, the Domino Project. The intensive early intervention program provides an appropriate preschool-like learning environment for young children with autism. The program includes home visits to families that provides individualized coaching and teaching for families based on needs at home.

A recent addition to the program is called Respite Night — one evening a month, the staff and volunteers at the Domino Project care for the children so the parents can have an evening out.

Other services launched in the last year are quarterly screenings in response to a need.

“Basically we’re booked well in advance of each screening and have a waiting list before the next one,” Sidell said. “We always encourage families to seek evaluations from their school districts and/or their primary care provider.”

Another project launched this year is a basketball camp for children with autism from kindergarten through the age of 18.

“The focus is truly on the acquisition of social skills,” Sidell said. “Each

child has a set of goals and objectives, and then the staff work with that child to help them meet them. It’s an exciting program because there isn’t anything like it. I wish there had been for my own son. … There’s a high demand, I think because not only do we look for opportunities for our children to be social, but to also participate in activities like other children do.”

The camp filled up immediately, Sidell said, and organizers already have a waiting list for the next sessions that won’t start till fall.

“The program is all possible through volunteer staff, but if I had more financial resources, I could expand the program more quickly,” Sidell said. “I’d like to eventually be able to offer it to adults with autism. There’s so little out there for adults.”

The next screening will take place sometime in early June. In the meantime, organization volunteers are working to raise support for programming.

A seminar will be held from 1 to 5 p.m.

April 20 at the Eastern Washington University Riverpoint Campus to help families understand how new technology can improve the quality of everyday life for children with autism. New technologies like iPad applications can improve communication and assist with the development of social skills.

For those in her group, meetings are a way to discover more insight into the disorder that rules most of their lives. Those involved are constantly researching, reading and looking for ways to come to terms with what the diagnosis means.

“There’s no parent training for this,” Lutes said. “He’s the one that goes to the therapist, and he’s the one who visits with the counselors. I’m just trying to learn by

myself from friends and books and movies and the short 10 minutes I have with doctors at the end of an expensive appointment.”

Living with the challenges While families searching for a diagnosis often do so in hopes to resolve issues at home, learning a child has autism rarely resolves any complications.

“It always seems to me that everything becomes a challenge when a family gets an autism diagnosis,” Sidell said. “You have to

A: You get your nursing qualifications, and then it just takes time. Usually they want at least five years with ER and ICU background. You do scene work that is a lot like ER medicine, but then we take care of really sick patients, which is more like the ICU. That’s why I have experience in both.

Q: What was it about being a flight nurse that interested you?

environment. It’s never boring, and it’s nice not to be stuck within four walls all the time. Probably the best part is there aren’t very many jobs where you can feel at the end of the day like you’ve made a difference. You can definitely feel you’re making a difference in this job and know that if I wasn’t here for this particular patient, it wouldn’t be the same outcome. There’s a great deal of satisfaction in that.

Q: What are some of the major challenges of a program like this?

A: Well, we have all the same challenges as all of health care right now: decreasing reimbursements, higher unemployment rates. This is a nonprofit program, but we still have to generate our revenue to sustain the cost of the service. We do that, but the economy is affecting us just like it is any other business.

Q: Is there anything on the service side of things that might be unique to your program?

A: Our program is kind of unique in the service delivery.

A more common model is sort of a one-crew-does-all kind of thing. We actually run two different teams of specialists. We have an adult specialists team and then what we call a perinatal specialist team of neonate and pediatrics. That’s unusual for a non-hospital-based program. It makes for a well-rounded team, because who wants to be ordinary anyway? I think most of us here have that attitude.

Q: Are there any challenges that arise out of that model?

A: It’s more expensive to maintain that model, and as we have competition encroaching on us

it kind of picks off some of the adult. You need both to balance out the program. One is more financially successful than the other, but you still need both.

Q: What are the most memorable calls like for you guys?

A: We’ve had a couple occasions when the patients came back afterwards. You don’t often see that, but those are the most memorable. You might have some vague memories of some calls because we get 3,500 a year, so they all kind of blend together. When the patient comes and starts talking about it, it’s easier to remember. That goes back to what makes our work so gratifying.

Q: Talking more about the program, is Northwest Medstar just helicopters?

A: No, we actually have three bases: one in Spokane, one in Moses Lake and one in the TriCities. We have three planes, three helicopters and five ground trucks throughout the region.

The helicopters get the highest use.

There are about 120 staff that work here — that includes administration, staff, respiratory therapists, nurses, pilots, communications specialists that work in the dispatch center.

Q: Is there anything about Northwest Medstar that you wish people knew?

A: What really struck me when I was being recruited for this job was the professionalism and the high level of attention to the quality of the program. You don’t see that everywhere. I’ve always believed that the program I manage should be the program I want to care for my family, too. I would

definitely feel comfortable with any of our teams flying a family member of mine. I don’t know of a higher stamp of approval I could put on it.

Q: What does the future look like for you guys?

A: I hate to say more of the same, but we do consider ourselves a regional program, so we’re not looking to take over other areas or anything. We just want to continue to improve the service in any way we can, find better ways to deliver the service, always making sure that we’re on the cutting edge of new technologies and patient care therapies. That really drives the team — you don’t want to work with people who think everything is good enough.

It’s more fun when you have colleagues who are constantly pushing themselves to do better.

Guns, horses, cultural conflicts, military agendas, peaceful and aggressive tribes, fear and broken promises were all part of the social stew which resulted in the mid-1850s Inland Northwest Indian wars in Washington Territory. This article, the first of a twopart series, begins with some of the conflicts in this territory that perpetuated mistrust and unrest on all sides, specifically conflicts in Walla Walla and northward to the Steptoe Battle near Rosalia. Next month, part two of the series will follow the conflicts on to Four Lakes, the Spokane plains and into Liberty Lake, exiting into northern Idaho at Cataldo Mission.

In 1836, a mission was established near Walla Walla, Wash., by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to reach the Cayuse Indians under the direction of Dr. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman.

The tribe, who believed the Whitmans should be involved in trading goods for the pelts they harvested from the land, did not understand the mission’s intent was to civilize and Christianize the tribes. There was conflict over ownership of the mission lands and payment for its use. When many Cayuse died as a result of an outbreak of measles, some reports claim the tribe believed Dr. Whitman kept the white man’s medicine for themselves and let the Indians die. They also believed the Whitmans plotted during a trip to the east to bring soldiers to the mission to kill the Indians.

On Nov. 29, 1847, the Cayuse attacked the mission, killing 14, including the Whitman family. Other women and children were held hostage, some reportedly given to chiefs as wives or to the tribe as slaves.

Most other regional tribes refused to join the Cayuse in this warfare, and bargaining resulted in the captives’ release. The Cay-

Believing it was futile to deal with the Indians, Steptoe decided to fight but ordered his troops not to fire unless they were fired upon. A second powwow ensued but proved unproductive, except that the Indians declared they would not fight on Sunday. It was Sunday.

With their inadequate supply of ammo and the unexpected number of hostilities, Steptoe returned to the Snake River crossing where he requested reinforcements from Fort Walla Walla. Father Joset, a priest working among the Indians there, told Steptoe the tribes were unhappy with troops being north of the Nez Perce River.

The next day, the tribes began testing the column looking for weaknesses. The probing went on constantly, the battle raged, and soldiers, chiefs and warriors were killed and injured. Indian deaths incited revenge. The ammo-shy army also battled a shortage of water, ineffective howitzers, and horses and pack animals terrorized by battle noise. By evening, some officers suggested a night escape, but Steptoe was not in favor. In the end, however, they buried their dead along with the howitzers, trampled the burial ground with their animals to hide the evidence, and left the battlefield called To-hoto-nim-me Valley near Rosalia, Washington. Steptoe’s retreat proved to be wise. The bodies and the howitzers were later retrieved. Seven men had been killed, 13 injured and one missing in action. More than 25 Indians were killed and many more were wounded.

The battle was over but the war was not, and the hostilities were about to move northward. Liberty Lake would lie in its path.

Letter to the Editor Paying for the disagreeable Terry Lundrigan’s letter (“Rights of all human beings should be equally protected,” March 29 Splash) was thought provoking.

Although I totally disagree with her opinion that birth control is morally

wrong, I share her frustration about paying for things we believe are intrinsically immoral. It’s painful, but we all have to do it all the time.

My personal belief is that eating animals is wrong. The notion that human eggs and embryos have souls, while living non-human animals do not, is impossible

for me to accept. However, these personal beliefs do not stop me from having to pay for meat in school lunches and subsidies for cattle grazing to subsidize your hamburgers.

We should thank our lucky stars that birth control and family planning services are available and affordable. Without

them, we would be forced back into the dark days of botched backroom abortions with coat hangers. Every child should be a wanted child. I am happy to pay taxes that help pay for family planning services.

learn so much about the educational system, about health care, about mental health so that you know what questions to ask and how to advocate best for your child.”

Aside from navigating endless amounts of information, daily life often presents challenges for families living with autism.

“There’s the task of accomplishing even the most mundane of tasks,” Sidell said “Haircuts suddenly become a trial. … When you first try to explain to another mom that your son doesn’t like getting a haircut, there’s a tendency for people to think that’s a normal part of being a young child and they don’t see beyond that.”

Sidell said sensory issues usually go hand-in-hand with autism, whether it’s a limited tolerance for certain smells, sounds or tastes.

“There are studies where they’ve done MRIs on autistic people’s brains while they’re thinking,” Lutes explained. “When you think of something it goes to your short-term memory and then you decide where it needs to go. In an autistic person, their whole brain lights up all at once.”

Sidell said the issues make navigating a child’s environment a challenge every step of the way – sometimes medical issues are left unaddressed because visits to the doctor or dentist are so miserable for everyone involved. Sleep is a challenge. Access to appropriate childcare is a challenge.

In the Different Not Less support group, parents share concerns freely without fear of judgment.

“It’s kind of a trite saying, but I believe in it: The rising tide floats all boats,” he

For Lutes, learning to live with her son’s disorder has been a roller coaster of emotions.

“It’s a pretty scary thing,” Lutes said. “My son has learned to tie his shoes three or four times, and he still can’t remember how to tie them. It’s hard when you celebrate those milestones, and then it’s gone.”

These days, Lutes said she does a good job managing their lifestyles to keep her son from reaching painful breaking points.

Still, challenges pop up around almost every corner.

“We still have a problem with cutting fingernails,” Lutes said. “He doesn’t have very fine motor skills, so I think he’s afraid of cutting them himself, but he doesn’t like for me to do it either because he just can’t stand the feeling after when they’re sensitive and short. So anyone out there who has ideas for cutting finger nails, I’m open.”

Breakthroughs Sidell credited burgeoning early-intervention programs showing promising results for children with autism. For some children, interactive therapies during developmental years may ease difficulties later in life.

The Northwest Autism Center, as well as the University of Washington both operate early intervention programs similar to preschool. According to Sidell, just in recent years these programs have been able to compile research that shows hope for early intervention.

“There is a growing body of research said. “Would a restaurant in Liberty Lake receive the same impact for a Chiefs hockey game as Luigi’s downtown? Probably not. But the amount of taxes that attendees and out-of-town visitors pay help supplement our (region’s) overall tax burden.”

He added that beyond the PFD’s economic impact on the region — estimated at $173 million annually — the facilities allow for “world-class entertainment”

supporting the effectiveness of early intervention in children with autism,” Sidell said. “Some of those children are able to go mainstream and develop readiness for kindergarten skills to help them be successful and able to learn in any environment.”

She noted, however, that sometimes breakthroughs lead to more challenges.

“Some of the ways we used to judge severity even five or six years ago are changing now because we’ve had an opportunity to see the way children respond to certain therapies,” Sidell said. “Those children who were non-verbal and had a lot of behavioral issues used to be considered the highest on the spectrum. … It’s no longer as black and white as that. There’s a lot in between. A real danger is doctors and parents underestimating what the child is capable of.”

For the Liberty Lake parents in Different Not Less, success comes in small portions.

“I think the major breakthroughs are just when you finally find the right help, when you find the right formulation of occupational therapy and treatment,” Lutes said.

“It’s all about setting goals and making sure you meet them, but maybe being a little more particular about some of the milestones when you reach them.”

And of course, there’s power in numbers.

“Healings happen in our group because people just don’t feel so alone,” Lutes said.

Hope for the future As public awareness for autism increases, so does public support. In 2007, the first state to mandate insurance coverage for treatment and intervention was South Carolina. Since then, 29 states have adopted insurance reform laws for autism.

“That is a huge turning point for families,” that is both a regional amenity and a source of regional pride.

McDowell said the PFD’s overall impact of 2,200 local jobs is not just good for the regional economy, but it impacts families across the county.

“I do not have access to where the people working the 2,200 jobs directly attributed to our activities come from, but from experience, I was a city of Spokane firefighter for 20 years but lived out on White

Sidell said. “Washington state is not one of those yet, and I think this is a difficult time to make decisions that carry any kind of a fiscal note. On the other hand, the predictions made by other states have ended up being far beyond what the actual expenses have been.”

Sidell also noted a handful of class action lawsuits won in the past year in the state, ensuring coverage for children with autism under mental health parity laws.

“There have been some phenomenal changes in the last 10 years, but particularly in the last five or six years,” Sidell said. “I’m hoping with expanded coverage we’ll see a bigger pool of experienced providers and greater access to appropriate treatment. …

It’s agonizingly slow when you’re raising a child.”

The Different Not Less families are still holding out hope that one day it’ll all end.

“Of course, we hope some day they will find a cure,” Lutes said. “But meanwhile, I’m hoping there will be more support for families and siblings and people in general.

When my son grows up, I hope employers will recognize and understand the values of employees with autism and won’t hold it against him.”

While breakthroughs in research, coverage and early intervention seem promising for young families, Sidell stressed the importance of not stopping there.

“What has been less studied is the need and effectiveness of continued treatment and intervention throughout the lifespan,” she said. “A lot of times when someone graduates from high school and leaves, they regress terribly. That’s a real tragedy. We need to recognize autism as a lifelong disorder.”

CVHS Sports Roundup Baseball team loses doubleheader The CVHS baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Gonzaga Prep by the scores of 5-0 and 6-5 in GSL action last week. The game was a pitchers’ duel as Bear hurler Jake Hochberg and his Bullpup opponent matched zeros through four innings before G-Prep posted a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach as the Bears mustered only four hits on the game.

The second game saw a similar beginning as CV hurler Brady Simmelink matched zeros through four innings with the G-Prep starting pitcher before the Bears posted two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. But the Bullpups rallied for three in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the one-run win. Ryan Leone was the only Bear batter to muster two hits as the Bears only had six for the game.

Soccer team wins another close one The boys soccer team picked up a late game win vs. Mt. Spokane as it scored with just two minutes remaining to ensure a 1-0 win. After a scoreless first 78 minutes of the game, Chris Stokesbary scored off an assist from Lucas Schneidmiller as the Bears picked up their fourth win on the season.

Goalies Alex Yoseph and Aidan Dowling only needed to make one save apiece as the Bears posted the shutout win.

Softball team beats Rogers The CVHS girls fastpitch softball team picked up its third win of the season

against no losses, pounding Rogers High School 11-1. The Bears were led by Carli Riordan, who picked up the win on the mound while also knocking out a home run. Mackenzie Shea had three hits including two doubles, while Kaitlyn Richardson also picked up three of CV’s 13 hits on the game. Rogers was held to two hits on the game.

Track teams race in league match and invitational The boys and girls track teams competed against Shadle Park and Ferris high schools in a GSL match while also competing at the Eastmont Invitational in East Wenatchee during action last week.

In their GSL match, the boys track team lost to Shadle Park 73-72 and Ferris 83-62. The boys had multiple top two finishes with David Brown and Grayson Sykes finishing one and two in the 400 meters, Parker Bowden won the 110 meter hurdles while Drew Brown earned the top spot in the 300 meter hurdles. On the field, JJ Talafili won the shot put with a toss of nearly 50 feet and Cole Jensen and Phillip Terrell went one and two in the high jump, matching the one and two finish of Mark Seely and Ryan Scherich in the triple jump.

The girls track team picked up two wins in its GSL match, beating Shadle Park 96-54 and Ferris 93-57. The girls team swept the sprints as Savannah Hoekstra won the 100 meters, Michelle Nemeth took first in the 200 meters and Allison Jordan won the 400 meters just ahead of teammate Rachel Backsen. Cheer 1: Savannah Hoekstra, Central Valley Track and Field Hoekstra took home first place finishes in each of her four events at the recent Eastmont Invitational, where the CV girls took home second place.

Hoesktra won the long jump and triple jump while also running a leg of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Cheer 2: Mackenzie Shea, Central Valley Softball Shea, a senior, knocked out three hits, including two doubles, as the Bears pounded Rogers High School 11-1 in a GSL game last week. The Bears, who have been battling weather and cancellations throughout the start of the spring season, have gotten off to a 3-0 start.

Cheer 3: Central Valley Boys Golf Team The CV boys golf team won their first GSL match of the season as they shot a team score of 377 to finish four strokes ahead of Mead and Mt. Spokane high schools. The top Bear finisher was Dakota Pearce, who shot a 73 to finish in second place. Danny Nimri finished in a tie for fifth, shooting a 74, Mark Beck finished in a tie for eighth with a 75 while Troy Smith came in a tie for 11th place shooting a 77.

Sports Briefs Men’s golf tournament slated for April 14 The opening day of the Liberty Lake/MeadowWood Men’s Club tournament season is April 14. The first tournament will be a shotgun start at the MeadowWood Golf Club starting at 8 a.m. All paid members are welcome to participate and new members are invited to join and play as well. To become a member, individuals must pay an annual fee of $55 for adults, $10 for juniors and $30 for associates and also complete a club membership application and have a sanctioned handicap. Local churches host 5K Several churches in the Liberty and Newman lake areas will host a 3.1-mile run/walk, a celebration of faith, on June 2.
