Liberty Lake resident Bret Ulrich didn’t let inexperience stop him when he decided to build his own guitar.

An optometrist by trade, Ulrich started with a box of lumber, mixed attention to fine details with a lot of patience, and ended up with a customized classical guitar. The hobby combines his passion for woodcraft with the sweet sound of music, something he sees himself fine-tuning for many years to come.

The Splash recently sat down with Ulrich to hear more about his handmade guitar and the things he learned along the way.

I wanted to play something that was a little bit softer on my fingers. I bought a classical guitar — it’s a nylon-string guitar.

The following incidents, arrests, calls for service and citations were reported by the Liberty Lake Police Department Feb. 28 to March 7.

Incidents and arrests: • Theft — At 1:30 p.m. March 2, LLPD responded to a theft complaint at the 24900 block of East Hawkstone Loop. The complainant reported that a computer, a monitor and a paper shredder were stolen during a recent move from California to Liberty Lake, saying the moving company did not deliver the listed items. The moving company reported that no items were left on the truck and doesn’t know what happened to the property.

• Suspended license — A 37-year-old Rathdrum, Idaho, woman was arrested at 3 p.m. March 2 at Appleway Avenue and Spokane Bridge Road for driving with a suspended license and driving with a suspended vehicle registration. Her vehicle was initially stopped for the registration violation.

• Suspended license — A 28-year-old Coeur d’Alene man was arrested at 4:10 a.m. March 3 at the 25000 block of East Appleway Avenue for driving with a suspended license.

• Car vs. pedestrian accident — At 4:30 p.m. March 2, LLPD received report of a car vs. pedestrian accident at the intersection of Molter and Mission. The pedestrian received minor injuries. Detective Ray Bourgeois is investigating the case.

• Child abuse — At 2 p.m. March 5, LLPD received a report of a child abuse case at the 25000 block of Hawkstone Loop. The complainant reported that she believed her ex-husband had abused their child while the child was staying with him in Grant County. LLPD conducted the initial investigation and interviews. The case was forwarded to Grant County, where the alleged abuse occurred, for further investigation.

• Marijuana possession — An 18-yearold Spokane Valley man and a 21-year-old Spokane Valley man were arrested at 5:45 a.m. March 6 at the 2000 block of North Glenbrook Road for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, marijuana.

While on patrol, the arresting officer observed a suspicious vehicle in the area.

When the officer asked why they were parked, the men said they were on their way home from Idaho. The officer noted an odor of marijuana in the vehicle, and one of the vehicle occupants was holding a lighter. When asked if they were smoking marijuana, both subjects admitted to the offense. A small amount of marijuana was recovered from the car along with a smoking device with burned marijuana inside it. Both subjects were issued criminal citations.

• Suspended license — A 31-year-old

Liberty Lake woman was arrested at 5:45 p.m. April 4 at the 800 block of North Knudson Street for driving while her license was suspended.

• Marijuana possession — A 16-yearold Liberty Lake male was arrested at 9:30 p.m. March 5 at the 19700 block of East Shannon Avenue for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles). A second 17-year-old Spokane Valley male was arrested during the same contact for unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. While on patrol in the area, the arresting officer noticed a vehicle parked at a dead end street parked at a 45-degree angle into the roadway with its parking lights on. The officer approached the car and noticed that the interior was filled with smoke.

The subject in the driver seat opened the door when the officer approached and a large amount of smoke came out of the car. The officer recognized the smell of the smoke as marijuana. The driver was detained. The passenger in the car had dropped something along the right side of the seat. As the officer contacted the passenger, he noticed a set of brass knuckles on the right side of the seat, leading to the passenger being detained for the possession of a dangerous weapon. The passenger told the officer that they were both smoking marijuana in the car when contacted. He told the officer that the smoking device was under the driver’s seat of the vehicle and that the brass knuckles did belong to him and admitted to attempting to hide them when the officer approached. Both subjects were released to parental custody.

The Central Valley High School Theatre Department held their opening performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic “The Sound of Music” earlier this week.

Productions continue through Saturday and March 16-18 at 7:30 p.m. and include a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. All performances will be in the school’s on-campus theater.

CVHS theater director Michael Muzatko said students auditioned for their roles in November and have attended rehearsals Monday through Friday since being cast.

More than 200 students auditioned for the 52 roles in this year’s musical, and the productions feature more than 100 student actors, technicians and instrumentalists.

“Usually the musical is our biggest production,” Muzatko said. “We try to include as many people as we possibly can in that one.”

In addition, a 26-piece orchestra made up of students and professional musicians directed by the CVHS director of bands Eric Parker joins the cast to present the story of

The story takes place in Austria in 1938.

Military officer Georg von Trapp, played by Josh Bacheller, hires Maria Ranier, played

by Maitlin Stewart, a free-spirited nun as his governess to look after his over-disciplined children.

Additional cast members include McKayla Crump as Leisl, Andrew Stewart as Fredrich, Ashley Stewart as Louisa, Trey Julian as Kurt, Brooke Hagerty as Brigitta, Amanda Hanson as Marta, Sophia Oye as Gretl, MaKade Claypool as Max Detweiler, Natalie Martinez as Mother Abbess and Tegan Monaghan as Elsa von Schreiber.

Muzatko said students and parent volunteers put in long hours not just rehearsing, but also building sets and finalizing all the details of a successful production.

“The kids end up doing 90 percent of it and basically run the show,” Muzatko said. “This really is their show and they’ve worked very, very hard.”

And all the hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, Muzatko said.

“Our presale tickets have been the largest we’ve ever seen,” Muzatko said. “We’re looking at being half sold before we ever open.”

He said selling out is a possibility, but earlier this week tickets were still available for every show.

Tickets for the show are $10 at the door or may be purchased through the CVHS business office during school business hours.

For an additional $2, patrons may join the von Trapp family in costume in the CVHS commons for “These are a Few of My Favorite Things,” a pre-show tea and pastries gathering.

New library programs to expand collection, boost circulation

The Liberty Lake Municipal Library is settling into 2011, launching two new programs intended to benefit readers and keep operations running smoothly.

The Good Neighbor Donation program kicked off last week to help expand the library’s collection.

“It’s a way for our patrons to help us meet the needs of other readers,” Director of Library Services Pamela Mogen said. “A lot of people have asked how they can help us and this is how.”

The program is intended to make up for cuts felt in the current budget. As part of the program, the public is encouraged to donate a new book, movie or audio book to the library for general circulation. A link on the library’s website, www.libertylakewa.gov/library, will take interested

donors to a list of forthcoming titles requested through the program. Mogen said the list is updated monthly with about 1012 titles.

A No Fine/No Limit program was also introduced at the library last week. The program offers a collection of paperback titles that can be checked out indefinitely with no threat of late fees.

The books must still be brought to the front desk for a statistical checkout, but no record will show up on the borrower’s card. Patrons may take as many as they like for as long as they like. The collection covers most fiction genres.

About 150 books make up the No Fine/ No Limit collection, but Mogen said the library staff expects to see that grow.

I need to make a confession to you, my loyal reader (I think I got one out there). I have … I struggle with … OK, here we go: I am addicted to brackets.

Whew. There, I said it. It feels like there is a 64-pound burden off my back.

You see, this time of the year brings out the best and worst of me. I love filling out brackets. I love the simplicity of brackets. I love that they start with 64 teams in four equal 16-team brackets and how they slowly work their way to a Final Four and ultimately one champion.

It is a beautiful thing.

And in three days, my addiction comes to the forefront as Selection Sunday announces the teams that will make up this year’s NCAA field. They will give them all seeds and slot them into regions and the bracketing will begin.

I will immediately start applying my basic rules of a No. 10 seed into the Sweet Sixteen, a No. 12 seed knocking off a No. 5 seed and a minimum of two No. 1 seeds making it to the Final Four. I will spend hours doing multiple brackets until I narrow it down to one bracket that I will submit in the multiple pools and games I play in (winning Splash Madness being of the utmost importance to me).

But my obsession with brackets doesn’t end there. I love to bracket all kinds of things.

When I was a kid, I used to bracket WWF wrestlers (Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

always won), Nintendo games (Contra in a close one over Double Dribble) and candy bars (Peanut Butter Cups dominated), and to this day I will still bracket nearly anything and everything.

Then it dawned on me what would be the ultimate bracket to do now: Liberty Lake, of course.

What would a bracket of Liberty Lake activities, places and events look like? Being a relative newbie and not having experienced all things Liberty Lake, I drew up a single region and narrowed it down to one champion. Let the debates begin.

Liberty Lake Region No. 1 — The Lake (fishing, kayaking, swimming, skiing, beach-bumming) vs. No. 16 — Skate Park (not for everyone but great for those who love to risk injury on wheels) No. 8 — Hiking to the Waterfall (a challenging hike to create fun memories) vs. No. 9 — Liberty Lake Loop (four miles of fun or pain depending on your conditioning) No. 4 — Good Eats (great restaurants where you can taste all flavors and genres of food) vs. No. 13 — The Splash (admittedly a homer pick, but hey, I believe it is a great asset to the community) No. 5 — Community Yard Sale (great bargains and hanging out with neighbors) vs.

No. 12 — The Library (encouraging folks towards a love of reading) No. 3 — Fourth of July (parades, activities, concert and fireworks) vs. No. 14 — City Tree Lighting Ceremony (roasting chestnuts, visiting with Santa and a sleigh ride) No. 6 — Friends of Pavillion Park (terrific group that gives us concerts and movies in the park) vs. No. 11 — Golf Courses (three solid courses in a small community — a win-win) No. 7 — Pocket Parks (little places of joy scattered around the community) vs. No. 10 — Liberty Lake Elementary (a standout school with awesome teachers and staff)

Sports Brief Johnson signs with Tampa Bay Liberty Lake resident and Spokane Chiefs center Tyler Johnson recently signed a threeyear, entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League. Johnson currently leads the Chiefs in goals, assists, power play goals and shorthand goals and sits in second place in the

Western Hockey League for points with 106, just four points behind the league leader.

Johnson, who went undrafted in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, has played four seasons for the Chiefs while also helping lead the USA team to a gold medal during the 2010 Junior World Championships.

or two and it was good, but I could tell that my guitar wasn’t that good. It didn’t have good enough sound.

Then I spent quite a bit of money to get a nicer guitar, and it definitely was an improvement. It was really fun to play, but I could tell there was another level.

I saw that the price for the next level was too high for me. I couldn’t really justify it with a family and all that. So, I naively thought, “Well I’ll just build one. How tough can it be?”

Q: Where did you even begin?

A: I bought a kit from a company called LMI (Luthiers Mercantile International).

They sent me all the components of an excellent guitar.

Q: Was it as easy as you thought it’d be?

A: The kit didn’t say, “Put part A into Part B.” It was more like, “Make this, mill this, make it thinner here.” I realized very soon that I had no idea how to make a guitar.

Before I received the kit, a patient came in and I told her I was building a guitar. She said her husband, Cai Kabrell, built guitars and if I just take my kit to him, he would love to help me put it together. I didn’t really know who he was so I was kind of leery.

Then I got the kit and took everything out, and I was just like, “Oh my gosh.”

Q: It seems like the whole process was pretty overwhelming. What kept you from throwing in the towel?

A: Well, I’ve always been able to look at books and figure things out. So I now have stacks of books on guitar making. As I was reading I thought, “There’s not any one step that’s too difficult; it’s just that I don’t know if I can get my head around it all.” So I called Cai and he said, “I’ve been waiting for you to call!”

Q: How long did it take from start to finish?

A: We took a year and a half and to build a guitar. No one step was too difficult, but it’s thousands of small steps.

Q: Do you think you’ll keep building?

A: Around Thanksgiving last year I took the guitar to a friend who is a professional guitar player. He played it and said the trebles were a little bit too tight and showed me a few things I could fix to make it better. I took it back to Cai and I made a few changes on my own — it definitely sounds better.

Now I know what to do now to make the next one better. I bought another box of lumber, and I’ve got a few tools and a cold garage with a little heater. I go out there after work and just have fun. I’ve got kids and everybody that wants one can have one. I figure I’ll probably do one a year now.

Q: Do you think you’ll ever try to sell you guitars for a profit?

Liberty Lake-based Event Trailers Northwest launched earlier this year, renting customized trailers for tailgating, promotional events and parties.

The flagship trailer, cleverly called the “Porta-Party,” comes equipped with just about everything imaginable for spicing up a party - a 55” TV, surround sound, two beer taps, awning, gas grill, microwave, fire pit, gaming system, satellite TV, DVD player, tables and chairs.

“It’s definitely a unique and different way to have a party,” owner John Leavell said. “It’s pretty cool … the possibilities are limitless.”

as a full-service rental agency.

He brings the trailer to the event, sets it up and comes back for clean up when the party is over.

While Event Trailers Northwest has yet to break into the catering business, Leavell said he plans to eventually find local caterers willing to partner.

Leavell said the business is also available for customizing trailers for personal use.

“Our hope is to eventually have a few trailers available,” Leavell said. “It all depends on how fast the business grows.”

Just months off the ground, Leavell said he’s already booked the Porta-Party for every Spokane Shock and Washington State University football game.

Use of the trailer was also do-

nated to a handful of charity events like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation golf tournament to be held later this year.

He’s even enjoyed the trailer a little himself while celebrating the Super Bowl earlier this year.

“It was snowing and blowing and we were out there around the fire pit,” Leavell said. “It was a blast.”

It was at that party when a friend jokingly christened the trailer with its cheeky moniker.

“Everybody laughed and then I thought, ‘Now wait a minute.

That’s the perfect name because it really is everything you’d ever need for an instant party,’” Leavell said.

Arboretum project gains city funding Deciphering the funds

After six years sitting on the backburner, Liberty Lake’s arboretum — Nature’s Place at Meadowwood — finally scored the necessary funding to become more of a reality for the community.

The Liberty Lake City Council approved $85,760 for the arboretum’s infrastructure Feb. 22. The project includes excavation, grading, electrical installations, paths, parking lots and an extensive irrigation system.

Community Development Director Doug Smith, who will oversee the project, said construction would start as soon as the ground

thawed. He said this could be as soon as a month from now, and the project should wrap up fairly quickly.

“If we had 30 days of perfect, consistent weather, then yeah, we could get it done,” Smith said. “But I’m not going to commit to that because Mother Nature’s plans always take precedent over mine.”

City Council Member and project advocate Judi Owens said she planned to schedule another community volunteer meeting once a timeline for the project was more established.

“I want make sure we get people excited at just the right time so that we can keep the ball rolling,” Owens said.

In fact, keeping the ball rolling has proved to be difficult for the community. The Meadowwood Homeowners Association donated the 2.88 acres of land to the city in 2005, and the area has remained largely untouched since.

“We’ve been told it was going to happen before, but we’ve never had this much support behind it,” former Meadowwood HOA president Colette Seubert said. “I think it’s really going to happen this time.”

Support for the project picked up last December when Owens started rallying community members for support. In fact, when she announced her plans to make 2011 her last year with the City Council, she did it in the same Splash guest column that called for community involvement to make the arboretum a reality.

“It’s been a long time in the planning,” Owens said. “It just kept getting put on the back burner. Until somebody decided to make it a priority, it was just going to sit there.”

While the arboretum made the list of planned city projects, Smith said the list includes about $21 million worth of other proj-

ects waiting for funding. Projects which took precedence over the arboretum, as they were funded since the arboretum was first conceived, include Rocky Hill Park and the building purchase and renovation for the library and police department.

“I could see it as one of those things that just sat on the backburner forever,” Owens said. “I decided to make it a priority and really pushed for it to move forward.”

Adding to the Council member push for the project, community members and homeowners in the surrounding areas rallied for progress, albeit for a different purpose. In the years since the donation, the city has turned the area behind City Hall into the maintenance area for city equipment.

Seubert said the homes along Garden Ridge overlook the area, and owners found the view unsightly.

In light of the struggling economy, Liberty Lake City Council members clarified the source of arboretum funds as money that didn’t come from the general fund, where the income from the utility tax filters in.

At last week’s City Council meeting, Council Member Josh Beckett made special note to the public that funds for the arboretum came as a kickback from a real estate excise tax, monies earmarked for capital projects like road maintenance, parks development and the purchase and renovation of the library and police department building.

The project is funded through the city’s capital projects fund and the special capital projects fund. The city banks 0.5 percent of every real estate transaction within the city into these funds. Although income to the funds has been waning, saving over the years has built up about $500,000.

“Until it was certain we had reliable revenue coming in, we didn’t feel comfortable making recommendations to spend that money,” Community Development Director Doug Smith said.

Smith also noted that the most effective way to use capital projects monies is to leverage them against match grants. The city unsuccessfully applied for a $50,000 grant to go toward plants and public education for plant care, but Smith said they are “always on the lookout” for more grants.

“It has been frustrating, but we also realize that money doesn’t grow on trees,” Seubert said.

Seubert explained that when the land was donated, the HOA was under the impression that the project would start in the next year or so.

Jackie Boardman, a Garden Ridge resident, said recent progress on the arboretum was wonderful, but first and foremost, she’s interested in screening the view of City Hall.

“My focus was fixing the visual for those homes first and then worrying about the rest of the project,” Boardman explained.

“My immediate priority is to get plantings in place to screen off the back of City Hall.”

To garner interest in the issue, Boardman said she wrote letters to the city, took a series of photos and worked to increase awareness among her neighbors.

While funding for the project doesn’t necessarily mean the property will be screened anytime soon, Boardman did express an appreciation for the city’s efforts to ease the issue.

“In the last month, they’ve made a big effort to clean things up back there,” Boardman said. “I know everyone would like to get it done, but there’s only so much money.”

Cleaning up the area might have to do for now, as the approved funds only include what Smith calls “hardscaping.”

“What we’re doing is basically putting in all the infrastructure,” Smith said. “What won’t be there are the plantings.”

You just don’t have a track record. So, no, I’m not going to ever sell for money — maybe just for cost of materials.

Q: What is it about the craft that appeals to you?

A: I like the way the guitar sounds. A friend of mine says the classical guitar is the sweetest sounding instrument. To be able to

“I thought the Council was pretty generous to approve what they did just to get the project off the ground,” Smith said.

He noted that additional funding for the project is possible through the city, but he doesn’t anticipate it and won’t recommend it any time soon.

Before volunteers can start getting their hands dirty or bringing in donations, Owens said the city needed to finish up some planning “I want what we do to be very methodical,” Owens said. “I don’t think we can just go about this haphazard and have it turn out the way we want.”

For starters, Owens said a “laundry list” of specific needs must be created, prefer-

ably by a professional. The list will detail what types of trees, benches or fixtures are needed as donations, where they will go and how much they will cost.

Owens also said she envisions the arboretum as a "living memorial," a place for people to honor deceased loved ones in a form of something living and growing. To achieve this, she said another important factor in the planning process would be determining how to permanently mark donated memorials.

City planners and volunteers have a good amount of work ahead of them, but at least they aren’t starting from scratch. Community members started brainstorming ideas for the area soon after the land was donated and a 2008 Washington State University design contest generated sketches for the final product.

I also like making wood shavings. I use two or three different hand planes and I like making piles of shavings, and at the end there’s something that looks like a guitar out of it.

Q: What other hobbies do you enjoy?

A: I’ve made leather fly rod cases before. I sold them in stores, but there’s a point when you can’t charge enough to make it worth your time. You have to slow down and just do it for fun. I love to fly fish — you know making flies, building my own rods and that sort of stuff. I also love to read.

Q: I heard you might also be involved in some volunteer work in the community.

Are you still doing anything like that?

A: When I first came to Liberty Lake, I tried to help start a Rotary Club but the guy I was in contact with couldn’t get it off the ground and then he had to move. Then a Kiwanis group in the valley wanted to start a Liberty Lake club. So they contacted us, and I was one of the founding members of the Liberty Lake Kiwanis Club. We met every week and I got to do a lot of fun things with them for about a year and a half. Since then I’ve not found what I want to do next. I spend a ton of time in our church.

Owens noted the possible learning opportunities that come along with the project. She said she hopes for it to be a place where youth can learn more about native trees and vegetation and how to identify certain species.

“It’s a place to make memories and have memories,” Owens said, noting recollections of going to the arboretum in Spokane when she was dating her now husband.

“Having a place like that close to home will just be invaluable to the community.”

Q: It sounds like you have plenty on your plate to keep you busy. How do you balance everything?

A: You put the big rocks in the jar first.

Then you put in the gravel and you shake it around. Then put in the sand and you shake it around until you fill it up. You know the analogy — you do the important things first and then you plan for the other things and hopefully you can fit them it.

• To Dr. Ross Simonds, for being the latest example of talented Liberty Lake professionals using their skills to serve the less fortunate on an international level. Dr. Simonds recently returned from a weeklong trip providing free dental care and giving out basic dental supplies. It’s not the first such trip he’s taken, and his example is inspirational to us all. Liberty Lake resident Dr. Jon Keeve is another noteworthy example (among others) of a local health professional who donated time in another country. Dr. Keeve, an orthopedic surgeon, was in Haiti last year shortly after that impoverished country’s devastating earthquake.

• To Miranda Kuhlmann, for raising and donating more than $1,000 to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery last month.

Oh, did we fail to mention that Miranda is 8? A talented Liberty Lake artist, she set up a website and sold her own paintings to raise the funds. We’ve been inspired by several members of the youth of this community over the years in their efforts to use their time and talents for something bigger than the latest video game. Props to you, Miranda.

• To three whose example lives on — Ronda Jo Emerson, Betty Johnson and Gene LaLiberte. Page 8 of our March 3 Splash was a tough page to read. It announced the recent deaths of these three incredible individuals, all of whom were well known locally for having huge hearts.

Emerson was owner of the Otis Grill, where she annually offered a free Thanksgiving meal and was known for extending generosity to everyone from local organizations to strangers in need. Johnson, who with her late husband Floyd once served as grand marshals of Liberty Lake’s Fourth of July parade, was active in her church, family life and community, helping with the formation of Pavillion Park among other accomplishments. LaLiberte was known for putting smiles on the faces of children when he’d dress up as Santa Claus or McGruff the Crime Dog, his prestigious service in the U.S. Air Force and his full-time volunteer efforts with the Spokane Police Department, where he accumulated more than 40,000 hours of public service. Wow. In honoring all of these individuals, may we all be inspired to give back. But then, we’re probably preaching to the choir.

Survey Results Is the city of Liberty Lake business friendly?

The Splash asked this question of readers at www.libertylakesplash.com from March 2-8. As compared to what we normally receive from our surveys — OK, as compared to about anything — this survey didn’t compel a lot of response. Only five people filled out the two-question survey.

From our standpoint, it’s an important question, and one the City Council is considering as it looks to assist businesses (and, in turn, city coffers) in bouncing back from a rough economy. Maybe it’s just not a question that is applicable to every reader (for one that is, check out our next survey).

Thanks to those who took the survey and provided some good feedback. The results: two respondents said the city is business friendly, three said it’s not. Excerpts

from the comments left: • There is a new development at the top of Legacy Ridge that no one can find as no signs are allowed.

• Smaller businesses always close or leave. I would never open a business in Liberty Lake.

• It’s a far better place to obtain permits.

I actually got my permit in record time and knew what was needed so I didn’t have to go back again. Wish I could say the same about other places in Spokane County.

Letter to the Editor Sheriff’s cruiser ignorant of unwanted “no parking” rules One would think the Spokane County Sheriff ’s Department would be somewhat leery of violating the law given its recent unflattering publicity.

I took a photo (Splash letter to the editor policies precluded it from being reprinted here) at 1:45 p.m. Feb. 22 of an unmarked police cruiser parked on South Wright Boulevard in Liberty Lake from about 1:30 to 2:05 p.m. There appeared to be no emergency, no officers were in sight and the car had no light turned on.

Please recall there were “no parking”

signs placed here months ago after the Spokane County Commissioners approved a request to do so from the fire marshal despite neighborhood objection.

One of these signs is visible in the foreground of the photo I captured. By the way, there was ample parking just across the street where parking on the pavement would not have been necessary.

Placing the signs were an immediate issue of safety, according to the fire marshal.

I guess the Spokane County Sheriff and his deputies have no concern whatsoever for our laws or our safety.

First Round The Lake knocks off the Skate Park, although the idea of breaking bones is less terrifying than drowning. Hiking to the Waterfall takes out the Liberty Lake Loop only because the nature scenery tops the housing views.

In the first of back-to-back upsets, The Splash takes out Good Eats only because I have to get paid to eat so I gotta go with the employer on this one. Next up, The Library with all the activities it hosts and offers year round knocks off the one weekend Community Yard Sale.

The second half of the first round opens

with the Fourth of July fireworks defeating the Christmas tree lights in a battle of holidays. The FOPP and their free movies (here is an early plug for Lord of the Rings this summer) projects out to a win over the golf courses (although if I can nail a hole in one this summer, this pick gets flipped).

The next match features an upset with LLES and students learning edging out the Pocket Parks and students playing. The final match-up features the Farmers’ Market, a Saturday morning activity better than cartoons, taking out the HUB and its various events.

Quarterfinals Swimming and skiing on The Lake pulls out an easy quarterfinal victory over Hiking to the Waterfall because diving in is better than marching up. The next game features the No. 12-seeded Library and its love of books securing a victory over the No. 13 seed Splash and its love of community.

take out the FOPP activities in the third quarterfinal matchup, while the artisans of the Farmers’ Market escape over the LLES on a last-second slice of pepperoni pizza prepared in a wood stove.

Semifinals The best of the best square off in the Final Four of Liberty Lake with the Lake itself squaring off with the Library. The Library is an underrated asset to the community, while The Lake is a source of community, fun and exercise for many of those who call Liberty Lake home — The Lake wins.

The second semifinal is a match-up of the Fourth of July activities and the Farmers’ Market. In a matchup that goes down to the wire, patriotism reigns as the Fourth of July pulls off a minor upset.

Championship In a blow out, The Lake wins. Seriously, our whole community is named after it — what other outcome could there be?
