How to build a city Founding Council members pass on memories from City Hall

As a new round of municipal election winners prepare to take office Jan. 3, a trio of city founders are prepared to quietly bow out from Council Chambers. Along with Mayor Wendy Van Orman, Council members Judi Owens and David Crump both decided not to run for re-election this year.

Both got involved on the ground floor, helping start the city from scratch. With more than a decade of experience under their belts, the two sat down with The Splash to reflect on the journey, pass on lessons learned and share goals for the future.

How did you each get involved?

What was it that drew you in?

Owens: My husband actually pushed me out the door because I was pretty involved in state government issues through public school employees. I was interested in that level of government. He said if you’re ever going to

run for office at the state level, you need to go and get involved in this. That very first transition meeting they had right after the city voted to incorporate, I started then.

That was November 2000.

Crump: I think I first started thinking about that when I was a kid. I think Boy Scouts helped me, because I understood service and freedom in my mind is not free — it takes effort. When we moved here and saw an opportunity to actually start a city, I thought that was such a fascinating once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — not only to serve, but an opportunity to learn and experience.

I was at that first meeting Judi was talking about. I even remember where I was sitting.

Owens: The room was packed full. I remember where I was sitting, too. I was right next to Steve Peterson. I’d never met him before that night.

Today’s (Dec. 22) meeting of the Liberty Lake Centennial Rotary Club features a special author appearance. The club will hear from Candace Dempsey, author of “Murder in Italy,” a book about the first Amanda Knox trial.

City offices closed over holidays Liberty Lake Municipal Library will be closed on Saturday and City Hall will be closed on Monday due to Christmas.

In honor of New Year’s, the library will be closed on Dec. 31 and City Hall will be closed on Jan 2.

Support group invites singles to Christmas brunch A support group, Singles Surviving Spouses, is planning a brunch on Christmas morning at a place to be determined.

Those who are single, widowed, divorced or with family out of town are welcome to join.

Police Report The following incidents, arrests, calls for service and citations were reported by the Liberty Lake Police Department Dec. 12-19.

Incidents and arrests: • Theft — A 24-year-old Otis Orchards man was arrested at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 14 at the 1100 block of North Liberty Lake Road for felony theft and possession of marijuana. A manager at the business notified LLPD that an employee was involved in a series of thefts from the store dating back to October 2011. Approximately $1,300 was taken from the business over this time period. Detective Ray Bourgeois contacted the employee at the store regarding the thefts. The man admitted to taking the cash from the business and said he used some of the cash to purchase scratch-off lottery tickets. He then paid himself cash from the register if he obtained a winning ticket. When the subject was taken into custody, officers located a bag of suspected marijuana in the suspect’s coat pocket. He was booked into the county jail.

• Theft — At 8:30 a.m. Dec. 13, LLPD was advised of a theft from a Coke vending machine at the 1100 block of North Liberty Lake Road. The theft occurred

sometime between Dec. 9 and Dec. 11.

An unknown suspect reportedly broke into the vending machine located outside of the business and stole approximately $35 in cash. Officers located the coin mechanism for the vending machine on Dec. 11 on Liberty Lake road near Settler Drive. The suspect appeared to have cut the lock off of the machine then drilled into it to gain access to the coin mechanism. Bourgeois processed the mechanism for fingerprints that are being submitted to the crime lab.

LLPD learned of a similar incident that occurred during the same timeframe in Post Falls. Bourgeois contacted Post Falls Police Department, and they had video of a suspect using the same method breaking into a coke machine. The video also shows a vehicle associated with the suspect. Bourgeois obtained a copy of the video for the case.

• Residential burglary — At 1 p.m. Dec. 13, LLPD was dispatched to the 23500 block of Maxwell Court for a residential burglary. Upon arrival, officers contacted the homeowner, who was standing out in the driveway. He told officers the suspects may still be inside the home. Officers checked and cleared the home and did not locate anyone inside. There were

no signs of forced entry. Several pieces of electronic equipment were taken from the home, including an iPad, iPods, a lap top computer, jewelry and a camera.

• Theft — At 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13, LLPD received report of a theft of a scooter from Liberty Lake Elementary School.

• Vehicle prowl — At 8 a.m. Dec. 16, LLPD received report of an attempted vehicle prowl that occurred overnight at the 1900 block of North Aladdin Road. The complainant noticed pry marks around the driver’s side window. Nothing was taken from the vehicle.

• DUI — A 21-year-old Spokane Valley man was arrested at 12:30 a.m. Dec. 16 at Liberty Lake Road and Appleway Avenue for DUI and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, marijuana. His vehicle was initially stopped for a speeding violation. During the contact and investigation, the officer arrested the subject for DUI. While searching the suspect, the officer located a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana in the suspect’s front pocket.

• Ignition interlock — A 36-year-old Otis Orchards man was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Mission Avenue and Harvard Road for operating a vehicle without required ignition interlock.

• Reckless driving — A 21-year-old

Newport man was arrested at 8:40 p.m.

Dec. 15 at the 1400 block of North Liberty Lake Road for reckless driving. The officer observed a silver Scion sliding sideways and accelerating rapidly in the parking lot of Safeway. The vehicle pulled out of the parking lot onto Country Vista Drive without stopping and again accelerated rapidly, drifting sideways across the lanes of travel. The officer got behind the vehicle as it stopped for the red light at Country Vista and Liberty Lake Road.

When the light turned green, the vehicle spun its tires and again accelerated rapidly onto Liberty Lake Road. The officer stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver. When asked about his driving, the driver told officers he was being an idiot and apologized. The driver was arrested for reckless driving.

• Suspended license — A 32-year-old Colville man was arrested at 3:50 p.m.

Dec. 12 at Sullivan Road and Indiana Avenue for driving with a suspended license. The vehicle was stopped during a commercial vehicle emphasis.

• Custody interference — At 3:45 p.m. Dec. 16, LLPD received a report of a possible custodial interference situation at the 1300 block of North Liberty

Council closes year with employee recognition Tenured staff, officers awarded for service to city

Liberty Lake City Council wrapped its final meeting of the year Tuesday recognizing city leaders and staff with special awards for committed service.

Mayor Wendy Van Orman presented five “key” employees who’ve all worked for the city 10 years. These employees include Police Chief Brian Asmus, Police Detective Ray Bourgeois, Community Development Director Doug Smith, Planning and Building Services Manager Amanda Tainio and Chief Building Inspector Wayne Hammond.

Toddler accidentally struck by father’s pickup From staff reports

An 18-month-old girl accidentally struck last week by her father’s pickup is expected to survive, according to a Spokane County Sheriff ’s Department press release.

At about 3:42 p.m. Friday, sheriff ’s deputies responded to a report of a pedestrian versus vehicle collision at the 2400 block of North Chase Lane, which is located east of city limits near Idaho Road.

While in route to the scene, responders learned the parents of an 18-month-old girl had already started to head to the hospital.

The parents flagged down an ambulance in the area of Mission Avenue and Molter Road, where paramedics then took over treatment of the child on the way to the hospital.

While at the hospital, traffic investigators learned the parents were leaving their home when the incident occurred. The father of the child was in a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup getting ready to move their vehicle from the side of their garage. The mother set the toddler down next to the truck to run back into the house for something. The father thought the daughter was still with his wife and proceeded to backup. This is when the toddler was hit and run over by the truck.

The toddler sustained serious head injuries requiring stay in the ICU, but is expected to return home in about a week, a press release stated. Investigators also said alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be a factor in the accident. The father gave a voluntary sample of his blood for analysis.

Asmus said Wilkerson was chosen for his diligence and dedication to the citizens and police department through proactive and aggressive police work as well as dedication to the safety of citizens.

Among Wilkerson’s accomplishments, he reportedly took on additional assignments in 2011 including commercial vehicle enforcement, fleet maintenance officer and chairman of the radio transmission committee for the region. This year he also updated the field training officer manual and acted as a field-training officer for two new hires.

Chaplain John Thompson was named volunteer of the year for the department.

Officers contacted the ex-husband, who cited an emergency situation and said he wasn’t able to drop off the child as scheduled. He said he had made arrangements to return the child in the morning.

• Suspicious person — At 5:15 p.m.

Dec. 16, LLPD was dispatched to a suspicious person call in the area of Appleway Avenue and Swing Lane. It was being reported that two subjects were parked behind Medicine Man Pharmacy. Officers contacted the subjects and determined they had run out of gas and were waiting for someone they had called to come rescue them.

• Noise complaint — At 3 a.m.

Dec. 17, LLPD was dispatched to a noise complaint at the 21200 block of East Country Vista Drive. A complainant reported a loud argument taking place outside the apartment. Officers contacted the subjects involved and determined several subjects were arriving home from a night out and were being loud. A neighbor yelled out to the subjects they were being loud and that the police were being called. It was determined no crime was committed.

• Felony assault — A 41-year-old Liberty Lake man was arrested at 2:15 a.m. Dec. 17 at the 25000 block of East Hawkstone Loop for felony domestic violence assault, 2nd degree. Offi-

Van Orman later passed recognition on to her husband, thanking him for “being there every midnight when I came home from a late meeting.”

Council member Judi Owens presented Mayor Wendy Van Orman with a community service award commemorating her 10 years of dedication to city development.

The award marked Van Orman’s last meeting.

“She’s done it all with grace and compassion,” Owens said. “She has a gentle nature that is a welcome diversion from typical politicians.”

Owens said she hoped Van Orman would remember her service with fondness and a smile.

“It’s been a pleasure to serve with you, and I’m rooting for all of you guys going cers were dispatched to an assault in progress, where it was being reported a male and female were physically fighting. The complainant reported an older vehicle with loud exhaust that had two kids inside of it had just left the area and the occupants of the vehicle were seen tearing down Christmas decorations in the yard.

Van Orman bids farewell to political arena for now

Since moving to Liberty Lake, Van Orman has served the community in many capacities — both political and not.

She founded the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Liberty Lake at Pavillion Park, sat on an HOA board, and once acted as coordinator for the PTSA at Liberty Lake Elementary School. As a political figure, she helped spearhead incorporation efforts, sat in on numerous regional committees and mentored the Liberty Lake Youth Commission.

“I don’t know that I did balance everything,” Van Orman laughed. “But I got it all accomplished somehow. It’s all stuff that gets me excited to get up in the morning.”

After more than a decade in the political arena, Van Orman announced earlier this year plans to slow down her pace and not run for reelection. Her last Council meeting as mayor was Tuesday.

“She’s done an admirable job keeping us within our means in the midst of some of the worst economic conditions,” Council member Judi Owens said.

This meant tough decision-making at the municipal level that eventually brought her to tears during the 2010 budgeting season. However, out of that difficult budgeting season, she emerged a year later poised to accomplish some of her early goals.

With a sizable ending fund balance for the 2011 budget, the Council decided to pay off the $583,105 Trailhead Golf Course bond last week. The decision will free up an annual $43,582.50 in the general fund.

In addition, city staff has grown to accommodate a financial director position — one written out of the books since 2008.

Perhaps bittersweet for Van Orman, funding for the city administrator position made it into the 2012 budget after four years of campaigning for it, just in time for her exit. The position is meant to aid the mayor in city operations with professional expertise.

Pet adoption fees cut for the holidays SCRAPS is waiving adoption fees for all pets until the end of 2011.

“We would love nothing more than to have an empty shelter once the new year arrives,” Lead Animal Protection Officer Nicole Montano said. “All of our pets will have their adoption fees waived in order to try and empty the shelter.”

All adoptions will be just the cost of the pet license, $25 for dogs

and $15 for cats. All pets will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, licensed and receive a free veterinary examination.

Adoption fees are normally $87.04 for dogs and $62.70 for cats.

Telect CEO joins Gravity Jack board Two Liberty Lake companies made a connection when Telect President and CEO Wayne Williams announced Dec. 15 he would accept an offer to serve as chairman and board member for Gravity Jack.

“Wayne has been a steady mentor to me since we first began working together in March of 2010,” Gravity Jack President and CEO Luke Richey said in the press release. “It’s exciting to see someone like him believe so heavily in what we’re accomplishing."

By accepting the offer, the two companies advance a cooperative working relationship, developed by a history of collaborative business interaction, a press release said.

Gravity Jack most recently assisted Telect in the development of software for power management to be released by Telect in 2012. Additionally, Telect owns the first printed and positioned copies of Quick Augmented Reality (QAR) codes, Gravity Jack’s patented new technology.

Despite sometimes-rancorous feedback, Van Orman has emerged with a notably calm — and likable — spirit.

“She is a gentle spirit that is just so caring and so focused on doing what is right and what is best for the community,” Owens said.

“You don’t often find someone who has had to take that level of heat and emerge so graciously … she takes everything in stride.”

Beckett noted a knack for weighing all aspects of a situation before jumping to conclusions.

He said she never doubted people or assumed they had ulterior motives when making a case for something before the Council.

“It’s really rare for anybody to leave after being in office that long and not have any personal enemies,” Beckett said. “To be held in that high of esteem is something few people in government achieve, and that will be part of her legacy.”

Looking forward Among the things she said she’d miss most as she steps away from city operations, is the “roll up your sleeves” staff and Council members she interacts with on a regular basis.

“If there’s one thing I can leave the future Council with, it’s think regionally,” Van Orman said.

“We are one region economically,” Van Orman explained. “If you try to stay within your own boundaries, things won’t happen.”

As far as jumping back into politics goes, she said it’s too soon to tell if the city will ever see her name on a ballot again.

“If it hadn’t been such a tough year losing my dad, I would have thrown my hat back in the ring,” Van Orman said. “He was always my cheerleader. I need to take some time to revitalize and recoup.”

In the meantime, she said she’d be spending long overdue time with family and adjusting to a

slower pace. As a new grandmother, she’s looking forward to “watching the world through new eyes.”

Those hoping to see her around town will still be able to find her behind-the-scenes skills back to work come Easter. She said she plans to continue her work with the community-wide Easter Egg Hunt she started in 1997.

“And my phone number hasn’t changed,” she added.

All in all, Van Orman said she’s excited about what the future holds for the city.

“We’ve built on what Steve (Peterson) left when he was mayor, and I know the next Council and staff will do the same,” she said.

“This community will continue to just get better and better.”

Nearly 100 students from Bowdish, Evergreen, Greenacres, Horizon and North Pines middle schools worked November 19 to “Fill the Bus” to benefit the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank. This year’s food drive collected 14,395 pounds of canned and packaged food, 129 frozen turkeys and $2,553 in cash donations.

Crump: I was sitting next to Stan Schwartz, our first city attorney.

Q: Was the involvement gradual? Or did you just jump right in?

A: Owens (laughing): There was nothing gradual. It was like into the deep end immediately.

Crump: It really was. I didn’t understand how much time it would take. Going into it, we had all the committee work, and when we filed for election there was campaigning. We had events and candidate forums.

Owens: The election was in April, and we were sworn in May 7, 2001. We filed for election a couple months or so before the April election, but starting in November it was three or four meetings a week. From there, it actually increased. You thought I couldn’t possibly go to more meetings, but there were actually more meetings to go to. It was just about every other day of the week. We didn’t meet on Sundays, but it was just about every day of the week depending on what committees you were on.

Q: What was the atmosphere like among the group involved in founding the city in those early years?

A: Owens: It was exciting. It was exciting because there wasn’t a bad idea. Nobody ever threw out a bad idea. Someone would throw out an idea and we’d talk about it, and we weighed out what was good about it, what was bad about it, if we could afford it. We talked about all the ideas. We’d come to a consensus about what was best. There were all these different committees going, and everybody was handling a little different piece of the action.

Crump: There was a positive, nervous energy because it was building and people were building their future. We had never done it before and didn’t know what to do, so we felt that anxiety of not knowing, but it was all in a positive direction and it had a lot of citizen buy-in. People couldn’t give five nights a week, but they could give one night or they could give ideas. People did that.

And there was some angst. People would say, “What are we going to do without a police force? What about our library? How are you going to fund City Hall?”

It was that nervousness, but there was always that underlying attitude of, “Hey, we can build this.”

Q: Did you every feel like you were in over your heads?

A:Owens: Yes, clear up through tonight (laughing).

Crump: Yes. We were in over our heads, but not to the point of drowning. We always felt supported by each other and that we could always go out and find support.

profiles we all knew that. We didn’t know what was ahead of us or underneath us, but we were always moving and there was a sense of making progress.

When we started talking about ordinances and resolutions it was kind of like, oh my gosh, what are those and what do you have to do. We had to start with nothing.

Owens: That part didn’t even come in until right when we were elected. Before that it was just all the investigation of how would we do this. We weren’t even talking about ordinances at that point. Then we got these lists and we called the new cities on the west side, all these cities that had incorporated.

Crump: There’s a lot of different cities that we built off of. We had no shame in plagiarism. We’d take other cities’ work and use that as the foundation. We’d combine them and come out with the best from all of them. We’d take and modify every single resolution and ordinance. I thought that was really noteworthy of our Council. We didn’t just sign off and say, “That’s good.” We hammered through every one of those.

Owens: (Last week) when we finalized our budget we were on Ordinance 196.

Well, there were about 100 that we had to get through in those first few months. After we were sworn in that May, we had so many that had to be completed before we actually incorporated Aug. 31. We couldn’t actually start until we had those in place.

Crump: We were actually meeting three to five times a week, and our meetings would go till midnight. For a while, that was the norm. We found that after midnight we were toast, but we got up to a pretty good stamina.

Owens (laughing): We were all 10 years younger!

Q: Was there ever a moment where you thought, “OK, now we’re really getting somewhere”?

A: Crump: Yes. For me we were sitting at Tierpoint on a really hot day in a hot building that had no roof, only wires, and we hammered out the city mission and vision. We came together really with a focus.

At that point it gave us a real sense of coming together.

For all the other steps, we were going through steps. I just remember how hot it was, but it was so rewarding to get that. It still stands today, and it’s still very good.

Owens: We hammered it out really well, I thought. And we had a good time. We always had a good time. That’s one thing throughout everything is we’ve always had a good time. We’ve laughed and cried.

I’ve cried. I can remember a couple times when we had tough, tough decisions to make, and you just feel overwhelmed.

Crump: Once we got the mission, I felt like that was really a turning point. We felt like we could really do this and we had that

confidence. There was something about that activity. It was not easy.

Q: What are some of the major things you’ve learned along the way?

A: Crump: One thing I learned in government is to trust the process and to listen. You have to trust the process of government. That means listening to the public, Council members and disagreements. That was something that came to me over and over again.

Another thing I learned is if you get to a point where you’re not listening to others, you’ve crossed the line. When you stop listening, the quality of the decisions goes down. It doesn’t mean you have to always do what people ask, but when you stop listening, that’s when I saw myself and other Council members starting to be less effective.

Owens: It’s important to stay open.

There have been times I’ve come in with my opinion leaning one way and then, just based on input during the night, I’ve swung to the complete opposite end by the time we vote. Beyond listening you have to consider the facts and be willing to change your mind.

Crump: There’s meetings where I’ve changed my mind a couple times. That was a good lesson — to come in with an opinion but being open to that changing. … The people that are single topic or focused on one thing, that hurts the productivity of the group.

Owens: I agree. I think you don’t have to be an expert in every area, but you have to have a working knowledge and you have to be interested in the outcome in every area.

Crump: One thing I started with that I end with, you make a decision now, but you have to think in the back of your head how this is going to weigh 15 years down the road. Personally, I know my vote to pay off the golf course bond will save the city money every year, even though I won’t be on the Council. That was a good decision tonight, and it’ll be a good decision 10 years from now.

Owens: The decisions we made to go into debt — to buy the golf course, to buy the 6.4 acres, to buy City Hall — all the things we’ve decided to do that put us into debt were all good decisions. I don’t regret a single one of them. We had some very intense discussions about the wisdom of doing each of those, and I think every one was a good decision for the city.

Q: With your tenure on the Council, I’m sure you’ve developed incredible bonds with the people you work with. Is that something you’ll miss?

A: Owens: I’m going to miss all of the above. I’m going to miss seeing the chief sitting back in the corner; I’ll miss seeing Margaret. There are people who are here that I don’t see much anywhere else.

here since almost the beginning. These are people that you see, but you don’t have a social relationship with. Nonetheless, they are important parts to your life.

Crump: I’ll miss interaction with service agents — the fire department, police department, the water and sewer district.

I loved my memory of carrying the Ibeam from the World Trade Center. I’ll miss Larry Rider and seeing him back there shaking his head. He can’t stop himself. I’ll miss the interaction on the Council. I’ll miss being able to friendly disagree and agree.

I’ll miss a lot of the people. … I’ll miss Judi. I don’t see her a lot. And Wendy.

That and just sitting listening to Susan and Odin kind of banter back and forth and Cris down on the end and sometimes who knows where Josh is coming from. I’ll see Ryan because we go to the same church.

Q: What do you hope to see in the future as the city moves forward?

A: Owens: I hope they keep moving, and I hope they don’t get so focused on reducing government. I hope we don’t get so caught up with the minimalism that we forget that we’re still a city building. We haven’t built all of the parts of government that exist in other cities. Saying we need to cut back — I don’t think we created anything in Liberty Lake that isn’t essential. … The art budget is an example. The $5,000 is a placeholder, and I don’t think it’s fluffy.

Crump: It’s an investment to the community. It really is. If we didn’t have that, it’d be gone, but we can afford to keep that in there as a placeholder.

Owens: We’re not going to buy anything with $5,000.

Crump: I would like to see Council develop a financial plan and a capital improvement plan so that they can pay down debt. One thing we learned years before, you don’t stagnate. If you’re not growing, you slide down. I hope the Council stays proactive and positive.

Q: Any words of encouragement for those following in your footsteps?

A: Owens: Keep doing it as long as it feels right in your heart and you have the passion for it. If you have that and the opportunity and the time, it’s a good thing.

Experience is good in this particular case.

As long as they have the right heart for the community and the reasons for being on the City Council are pure, I say go for it. I hate politics as usual. Don’t let it turn into that. That can sour your experience faster than anything.

Crump: My advice would be to listen intently. Don’t be afraid to change you’re opinion, and don’t be swayed by singleissue groups. You get a very vocal minority that really only talks about one item.

Listen to that and put it in reference to the big picture. Don’t discount it, but don’t

Comfortably numb for the holidays

I feel comfortable. Yes, it may be 28 degrees and December, but as I walked around our fifth annual Blessings Under the Bridge event, which took place under the bridge of I-90 between Division and Browne, I was in awe of the 500-plus volunteers from all corners of Spokane who found themselves sharing more than just their time with the 500-plus homeless and less fortunate of Spokane.

I see a bit of the Yin and Yang in what takes place before, during and after our event(s). It is hard to determine who or whom is receiving the greatest blessing.

Is it the homeless and less fortunate or is it the volunteers who give of their time to discover one of humanities greatest gifts: serving? I think Mike Kovac, co-founder of BUTB, says it best when he states that we are all homeless in our own way. We are just good at masking and covering up our own “poverty” better than others.

As a teacher at Central Valley High School, I love to watch our youth openly serve. Unlike adults, they carry fewer stereotypes about the homeless or even the poor in our community. Unlike adults, they are often more willing to roll up

CVHS Sports Roundup Boys basketball picks up two wins Mariah Cunningham chipped in13 points The CV boys basketball team picked up two league wins, one on a nail biter and another in a blow out. The Bears took a close 44-42 decision over Ferris, which saw them trail by 13 at the half before rallying for the victory. The Bears were led by Austin Rehkow’s 11 points and 5 rebounds, including the clinching field goal late in the game. Anthony Brommer and Gaven Deyarmin both contributed 10 points in the win.

The Bears followed with an easy victory over Mt. Spokane, opening a 44-15 halftime lead while cruising to a 75-49 win. The Bears were paced by Brommer’s 16 points. Beau Byus added 13 points and Deyarmin 10 as the Bears moved to 3-1 in conference play.

Girls basketball team remains unbeaten The CV girls basketball team continued its unblemished start to the season with a 58-35 win over Ferris and a 56-40 win over Mt. Spokane, as it moved to 4-0 in league play and 5-0 overall. Against Ferris, the Bears were led by the tandem of Katie Estey, who had 15 points including three baskets from long range, and Madison Hovren, who also had 15 points. The team’s leading scorer, Brooke Gallaway, chipped in 12 points in the win.

Against Mt. Spokane, the Bears defense limited the Wildcats to 14 points in the first half and cruised to the win behind the inside play of Gallaway, who had 18 points.

Wrestling team splits two league meets The CV wrestling squad split two league dual meets, defeating Shadle Park 61-9 and dropping a 42-40 decision to North Central. Against Shadle, the Bears cruised to the win with pins from Blake Beard at 120 pounds, Colton Orrino at 132 pounds, Kurt Beck at 182 pounds, Kolten Cole at 195 pounds, Lowell Kovacich at 220 pounds and Dan Schoultz at 285 pounds.

Against North Central, the Bears found themselves in an early hole as North Central picked up wins in the first four matches of the night before the Bears fought back to make it close. Ultimately, the team suffered its first league loss of the season, despite pins from Tanner Davis (170 pounds), Beck, Cole and Schoultz.

The Bears also competed at the recent Tri-State wrestling tournament held at North Idaho College, placing 11th with 102 points, far behind tourney champion Mead’s 204 points. The Bears had one champion, Schoultz at 285 pounds. Orrino at 132 pounds and Beck at 182 pounds finished in sixth place, and Davis finished in seventh at 170 pounds.

think that is everyone’s voice. You have to weigh both.

Q: Do you think you’ll ever jump back into government at any time?

A: Crump: Yes. Q: Do you think it will be back at the city level?

A: Crump: Oh, I don’t know how, but it’s a wonderful process. It could be city level; it could be school district; it could be committees. I don’t really have aspirations for state, but I can sure see it when my kids are grown — which really is only four years when I think about it. Then if I have time, yeah. I’ve totally enjoyed the process and the discussions.

Judi: I don’t know. Right now I’m looking forward to retirement in August, but after I’ve had some time and we settle down maybe I’ll think about it. Maybe, but I’m not planning that far ahead in advance right now.

Q: What will you do in your spare time now? Where will we be able to find you guys?

A: Crump: I’ve got two girls who are very active, and I’m going to be able to go to more of their events. I know it sounds corny, but I’ve never done that before. I have four more years to spend with them, and I’m going to do that and I’m going to spend more time with my wife. I don’t have any other agendas. I’ll work hard and spend time with the family; that’s all I want to do.

Owens: I admire those of you who’ve had families through this. My children were already raised, so I had all those opportunities. This was an after-kids thing for me.

Beyond that, I just think I’m going to retire and enjoy it.
