On Tuesday, representatives of Liberty Lake Elementary School’s K-Kids club attended the Liberty Lake City Council meeting to accept a proclamation from Mayor Steve Peterson declaring the week of Oct. 21-27 as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Week.”

According to Pat Lutzenberger, advisor for the school’s K-Kids club, more than 40 fifth-grade students participate in the program, which is sponsored and funded by the Liberty Lake Kiwanis.

The proclamation noted that bullying is a learned behavior and occurs in more environments than just the school yard.

“It is important that we acknowledge and heighten awareness about the serious issue and the negative effects of bullying, including the long-term damage it can cause,” the proclamation read.

To educate their classmates about the dangers and consequences of bullying, the K-Kids club members will be putting up anti-bullying posters around the school during the awareness week and distributing blue bracelets with the saying, “We don’t do that here.”

Lutzenberger explained K-Kids is a “sponsored leadership program” of the Kiwanis. As a Kiwanian, she is given $1,500 each year to fund the program at Liberty Lake Elementary.

Police Report The following incidents, arrests, calls for service and citations were reported by the Liberty Lake Police Department Oct. 8-15.

Incidents and arrests • Domestic violence assault — A 33-year-old Spokane woman was arrested at 5:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at the 19000 block of East Nora from domestic violence assault, fourth degree. Officers were dispatched to the address for what was being reported as an argument that turned into a struggle, and then the phone was disconnected. When officers arrived on scene, they determined the woman had assaulted the victim by pushing him. She was booked into the Spokane County Jail.

• Debit card theft — At 2:45 p.m. Oct. 8, LLPD was dispatched to a theft outside STCU at the 2200 block of North Madson Road. The complainant stated he left his debit card in the ATM machine at the drive through, but it was missing when he returned, and it had not been turned into the credit union. The complainant reported he cancelled the card and was informed someone attempted to use the card at a gas station at Sprague and Argonne. The case has been assigned to Detective Bourgeois.

LLPD assisted the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office with an injury accident at the 26000 block of East Wellesley in which two subjects were ejected from the vehicle.

Medstar was contacted to transport one of the individuals, and the other subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

• Agency assist — At 7:40 p.m. Oct. 9, LLPD assisted CPS with an emergency child placement into protective custody at the 1800 block of North Glenbrook.

• Found bicycle — At 10:15 a.m. Oct. 10, LLPD was notified of a found Black Diamond mountain bike in a field in the area of the 1700 block of North Holl Road.

• False alarm — At 11:10 a.m. Oct. 10, LLPD was dispatched to a residential alarm at the 1800 block of North Country Vista Drive. It was determined the alarm was false.

• Trespassing — At 4:40 p.m. Oct. 10, LLPD was dispatched to the 1800 block of North Pepper Lane for a trespassing call. A subject was reportedly refusing to leave the business after being asked several times. Officers arrived on scene and learned three female subjects entered the business and used the phone and computer that are in the lobby area. The subjects were asked to leave and refused and began walking around the lobby. All three subjects were trespassed from the property.

• Reckless golf carts — At 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 10, LLPD was dispatched to reckless golf carts doing circles in the bike lane and in the roadway in the area of Molter and Sprague. The drivers were described as males between 10 and 14 years of age.

Officers located the two subjects and followed them home and contacted their parents about the safety issues and the city ordinance on use of golf carts.

• Drug theft — At noon Oct. 11, LLPD was dispatched to the 1500 block of North Holl Road for a report of a prescription drug theft. The complainant stated that her adult daughter had taken Hydrocodone pills from the house and left, but

did not have information on where the daughter was living.

• Car accident — At 8 a.m. Oct. 11, LLPD was dispatched to a two-car injury collision at Country Vista Drive and Liberty Lake Road. The at-fault driver, who said he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, was issued a citation for negligent driving.

• Theft — At 4:15 p.m. Oct. 12, LLPD was dispatched to the 21500 block of East George Gee for a theft. It was reported a customer had taken his vehicle without paying for the repairs that were done at the dealership. The complainant told officers the suspect went to the cashier to pay for about $550 in repairs and told the cashier he needed to get his checkbook from the vehicle. The suspect used a spare set of keys and drove away without returning to pay. The dealership made numerous attempts to contact the suspect without any success. LLPD has made attempts as well and has not been able to contact the suspect.

• Suspicious circumstances — At 5:15 a.m. Oct. 13, LLPD was dispatched to a possible residential burglary in progress at the 1800 block of North Cavalier Road. The complainant told 911 she heard somebody talking in the home. The complainant could not see anyone. After a minute, the complainant told 911 she was now hearing voices coming from the front of the house. The complainant looked outside and throughout the house and did not see anyone. Officers checked the house and surrounding area and did not locate anyone.

• Domestic violence — At noon Oct. 14, LLPD was dispatched to the 21200 block of East Country Vista Drive for a domestic violence incident. The complainant reported her 11-year-old daughter was kicking her.

When officers arrived, it was determined that while the complainant was trying to place the child in her bedroom, the child was flailing and protesting. It was determined the assault being reported was not intentional. Information was provided to

the mother, and the officer spoke to the child.

• Vehicle prowl — At 3:30 p.m. Oct. 12, LLPD was dispatched to the 22800 block of East Country Vista Drive for a report of a vehicle prowl and theft. The complainant reported that sometime during the prior evening or early morning hours, tool boxes and tools were removed from the bed of his pickup truck while it was parked at the location.

• DWLS — LLPD officers made three arrests for driving with a suspended license during the reporting period, including: - A 23-year-old Spokane man at 12:10 p.m. Oct. 9 at Appleway and Molter; - A 21-year-old Post Falls man at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at Country Vista Drive and Liberty Lake Road; - A 26-year-old Spokane Valley man at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Appleway and Madson.

Park trail closed for renovation The seven-mile “loop” trail at Liberty Lake Regional Park will be closed to the public next week as crews work to renovate it.

The work, which begins Monday and will continue through Oct. 26, includes blasting rock to widen and level the trail’s tread in an effort to improve public safety. The trail will reopen to the public Oct. 27 unless otherwise posted onsite.

The work is being funded through a $36,860 grant from the Washington State Recreation & Conservation Office. In addition to blasting work, the grant is funding bridge replacement, interpretive signage, habitat restoration and other trail improvements. The Washington Trails Association, Backcountry Horsemen and the Lands Council are partnering with the Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf department in the project.

This November voters get to vote on eight statewide ballot measures. Three are initiatives, where the voters can make a new law.

There is one referendum, a means by which the people can repeal a law just recently passed. The other four are two proposed amendments to the Constitution and, for the first time in Washington State history, the voters are providing input with two advisory votes on tax increases passed by the State Legislature.

The eight measures are: • Initiative measure number 1240 concerns the creation of a public charter school system. If passed, this would be the first time charter schools would be allowed in Washington state.

• Initiative number 1185 makes it harder for the Washington State Legislature to raise taxes or fees. This measure would reestablish existing statutory requirements that require a tax increase to be approved by two-thirds legislative majorities in each chamber (House

and Senate) or receive voter approval.

• Initiative number 502 legalizing marijuana would eliminate state-law criminal and civil penalties concerning marijuana.

The measure would license and regulate marijuana production, distribution and possession for persons 21 and older.

• Referendum 74 is a vote on whether to reject an Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6239 passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor earlier this year. The proposed law would allow same-sex couples to marry, redefining marriage partners as “gender neutral” under state law.

• Engrossed Senate Joint Resolution No. 8221 proposes a constitutional amendment to the Washington State Constitution governing state debt. Beginning July 2014, the amendment would phase down the debt limit in three steps from the current 9 percent to 8 percent and modify the calculation date, calculation period and the term.

• Senate Joint Resolution No. 8223 is a proposed constitutional amendment on investments by the state’s two largest universities,

Shea, Biviano battling for 4th district seat

A dinner table conversation prompted Amy Biviano, Democrat, to challenge incumbent Republican Matt Shea this November for the 4th Legislative District’s Washington State Representative, Position 2.

“I was frustrated by the fact that yet another one of my small business clients was declaring a loss for the year but still had a significant check to write for their B&O taxes,” said Biviano, who owns a CPA firm. “That inequality coupled with the fact that our schools never seem to have the funding support they need was on our minds. My husband reminded me that if I really wanted to change the business environment, it was time someone with tax experience stepped up.”

Biviano’s platform includes spearheading tax reform. She proposes closing special interest tax loopholes so “everyone is paying their fair share.” According to Biviano, large banking institutions pay a lower tax percentage than family-owned businesses.

Republican Shea wants to “get government out of the way of small businesses” to prompt job creation.

“I pledge to vote against any bill that would increase the size and scope of state government and to continue finding and

cracking down on fraud, waste and inefficiency,” Shea wrote on his website. “I will also continue pushing back on unconstitutional federal laws using the 10th Amendment.”

In an e-mail, Shea said he wants to get “Washington working again.” He further wants to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the State Constitution, sponsoring bill HJR 4225.

“So we quit passing the buck, literally, to future generations,” Shea wrote about the amendment.

Shea is also for an amendment to the State Constitution making a two-thirds vote requirement to raise taxes permanent. Biviano stated she opposes twothirds majority rules for tax increases.

Both candidates value the importance of education and plan on championing legislation to strengthen the education system.

According to Shea’s website, he believes in a “first-class education in both public and private schools based on four principles: competition, prioritized funding, parental choice and accountability.” He plans to eliminate or reduce unfunded mandates on local school districts to ensure money is getting into the classroom.

“This includes treating hydropower as renewable,” wrote Shea, “which would dramatically cut actual and projected

Supporters say this will provide universities helpful flexibility and increase financial resources. Opponents say it will put higher education funds at risk and gives too much discretion to college officials.

The vote isn’t binding but allows citizens to weigh whether the Legislature did the right thing. Mielke, Roskelley bring experience to race

John Roskelley, a Democrat who previously served nine years as a Spokane County Commissioner, hopes to take the position back from incumbent Republican Todd Mielke. Mielke is campaigning to serve his third term.

Both men resumes reflect extensive experience in the position and claim to have a “common sense approach.”

Roskelley served as commissioner from 1995 to 2004, and Mielke has held down the position since.

“There’s not an issue we agree on,” said Roskelley, citing the stand each takes on political partisanship and the county’s budget.

Roskelley said his main priority, if elected, is to bring democracy back into the office. He stated that as there are currently three Republicans serving on the threeperson commission, his presence would balance out the political landscape.

“We need to have diversity, another voice so both sides of the story are represented,” Roskelley said.

Mielke counters that people of the same party don’t always share the same view.

“It’s more about background and demonstrating leadership,” Mielke said. “At

what level do we bring partisan politics to local government?”

Mielke’s main goal is to improve the transportation infrastructure for the future when the county is continually receiving less funding from the federal and state governments.

“This includes all transportation,” Mielke said. “Roads, sidewalks, paths, public transportation. We’ve got to figure a way to prepare the community for the long term.”

Having served a six-year term on the Growth Management Act Hearing Board, one of Roskelley’s priorities is to ensure the county is in compliance with the state regulation on GMA. According to Roskelley, this is vital because if the county isn’t in compliance it costs taxpayers millions.

Fiscal responsibility is another key issue in this race.

Mielke said the county’s financial position has improved since he has taken office.

“When I took office, the county’s cash reserves were at 8.1 percent,” Mielke said.

“Today in the worst economy, the reserves are 9.45 percent.”

Mielke further pointed out for the last two years the county’s AA bond rating, the highest rating possible, is earning the low-

Republican Mark Richard decided not to pursue a third term as Spokane County Commissioner. Therefore, voters get to choose between two reasonably new faces to the political arena this November, Republican Shelly O’Quinn and Democrat Daryl Romeyn.

O’Quinn brings a varied background with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector working for World Vision, Habitat for Humanity and Inland Northwest Community Foundation. Currently the director of education and workforce for Greater Spokane Incorporated, she has engaged in education, workforce development, public policy and economic development and community initiatives for the past five years.

As a former TV reporter and weatherman, Romeyn believes his experience taught him to get all sides of the story and the importance of knowing the facts. Ac-

cording to the onyourballot.vote411.org website, Romeyn said he knows how to investigate and will use this skill to “follow the money trail in local government, find savings and identify needed reforms.”

Balancing the budget is O’Quinn’s top priority, followed by creating jobs. O’Quinn believes local government can either promote economic vitality or stifle it with legislation.

“An over-taxed, over-regulated business cannot invest in itself, grow and retain or create jobs,” O’Quinn said on her website.

“A balance must be struck between the county government’s need for tax revenue and the tolerance of our economy and citizens to pay tax.”

O’Quinn plans to be responsive and proactive to the business community by improving the systems in which the county operates. She advocates creating a timely permitting process, building a business friendly environment and ensuring basic

City budget promises ‘proactive’ approach to 2013

Telling the City Council that a growing city requires a proactive approach, Liberty Lake Mayor Steve Peterson presented a 2013 budget plan Tuesday that painted a picture of a community on the rebound from a difficult economy and primed to invest longstored resources into capital projects.

In introducing the budget, Peterson reflected on the growth of the city since he served as its first mayor in 2001, noting a population that has more than doubled and a business workforce that has more than tripled.

“The city’s growing,” he said. “You don’t want to be caught in a position where you are trying to catch up. You’re better off being proactive.”

The budget calls for the city to spend $4.45 million on general fund expenses against anticipated revenues of $4.77 million. Absent from the general fund — but not from the city — is a utility tax that Peterson’s budget moves into the street fund.

The tax was first collected at 6 percent in 2011 before being halved to 3 percent for 2012 during last year’s budget cycle.

“Currently, we are focusing on maintenance/preservation of our streets at about $300,000 to $400,000 a year,” Peterson wrote in a budget introductory message. “The balance of the utility tax funds will be used for more intense capital street fund dollars to rebuild antiquated streets like Valleyway, Liberty Lake (Road), Sprague Avenue and Appleway, which are included in our Capital Facilities Program.”

In past meetings, some Council members have expressed interest in doing away with the utility tax entirely, and Council Member Josh Beckett cited a constituent email

According to an email, Romeyn says he is running for office to “say no to new taxes.”

“We simply can’t afford ‘em,” Romeyn wrote. “There are many seniors on fixed incomes and families struggling.”

He plans to run the county like a business, determining the needs, set funding priorities and look to innovation for savings.

“Make sure the taxpayer gets their money’s worth,” Romeyn wrote.

Part of Romeyn’s business plan involves reducing the number of “failure to appear in court” notices.

O’Quinn also is campaigning against tax increases. She believes all tax increases

Tuesday in asking city staff to provide more information for city leaders as the future of the tax is considered. Beckett said Brandon Hunt of Huntwood emailed the Council his opposition to any continuation of the tax, arguing the large company foots the bill for 10 percent of the community’s total tax burden, and without the tax it would be able to hire another two to three employees.

“That’s what was alleged in the email,” Beckett said in asking for further analysis.

The police department, which makes up 38 percent of the proposed 2013 general fund expenditures, is seeking to add two additional patrol vehicles and one additional officer in 2013, an overall budget increase of 11 percent from $1.54 million to $1.71 million. Police Chief Brian Asmus said the city hasn’t hired a new officer since 2007, a time during which calls for service, cases and the city population have all steadily increased.

He said the expenses associated with a new officer are the main reason for the bump.

“We’re expensive — salary, benefits, the equipment, the training — that increase is basically based on that ask,” Asmus said.

The Council also heard an updated Capital Facilities Plan, listing projects intended to be funded in the city from 2013 to 2018. Some of the projects, such as a roundabout at the Harvard/Mission interchange, would utilize funds that have already been collected.

The 2013 budget presentation was Peterson’s first since returning to the office in January, and it was also the first full budget cycle for Finance Director RJ Stevenson, who participated last year after being hired in September, and City Administrator Katy Allen, who joined the city in June.

LDS congregation receives new leadership The Liberty Lake congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently underwent a leadership change. Richard Kearnes, a 22-year resident of Liberty Lake, was asked to take over as bishop after Adam Nebeker left the position when his family moved out of the area. Kearnes, employed full time by Provident Health & Services, will be assisted in the volunteer position by two counselors, Bill Prince Jr., district facilities manager for Target Stores in the Inland Northwest, and Dr. Greg Brockbank, a local podiatrist.

“We know that here in Liberty Lake our students are respectful, responsible, honest and caring; the anti-bullying program shows that we’re taking a stand, and we just don’t do that here,” she said. “It means we don’t mistreat friends or cheat on a test or disrespect our teachers.”

The K-Kids program has been ongoing at Liberty Lake Elementary for the past 10 years. Lutzenberger explained that at the start of each new school year she puts together a calendar of events.

“We do a lot of the same programs that we’ve done in the past, but I do try to change it up a little bit each year,” she said.

In the past one of the programs was a “No Smoking Campaign,” where the students made up buttons and went to City Hall, where the mayor declared a “Great American Smokeout Day” in Liberty Lake.

She said the idea of that program was to get the K-Kids involved in a project that was not only healthy, but also gave them the chance to visit City Hall and the City Council meeting, allowing them the opportunity to learn the basics of how city government works. The K-Kids meet once a month during the school year to help plan their upcoming projects. Some of this year’s projects will include a baby food drive, a food drive prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas and assisting with the “Tree of Sharing.”

The monthly meetings are held after school from 3:10 to 4 p.m. During each meeting, Lutzenberger, Dockrey, Spear and Morgan help the students with the upcoming project.

“We could have 40 kids, or we could have 60 show up, and that’s a lot of kids to try to corral,” Lutzenberger said. “So the three of them are very helpful.”

Lutzenberger explained that each meeting begins with the Pledge of Allegiance and the K-Kids motto. While they enjoy a snack, Dockrey and the teachers explain what they will be doing during the meeting regarding that month’s project.

With the season of trick-or-treating coming up, during the October meeting students will be receiving half-sheets of orange paper with Halloween safety tips printed on them. The tips come from suggestions made by the students themselves at last month’s meeting.

The students will attach glow-sticks to the sheets of paper, place them in plastic bags

and before Halloween the teachers will distribute them to each student in their class.

Lutzenberger credits the local Kiwanis club for the donation allowing her to purchase supplies such as the glow-sticks and bracelets.

“We’ll also take them over to the kindergarten center so that every child in Liberty Lake will have a glow-stick to wear the night of Halloween,” Lutzenberger said.

Spear said the K-Kids will be at Albertsons collecting “Turkey Bucks” in November and December. The Turkey Bucks will be used to purchase a complete holiday meal for any family that needs it.

Spear said her involvement with K-Kids allows her to connect with students in the upper grades. It also enables her to reunite with students she had a couple years earlier and to make a connection with siblings of students she is presently teaching.

But her involvement is spurred mostly by the opportunity to connect students with a sense of community service and a feeling of giving back. As an example, she points to the club’s February baby food drive, which is held annually at Albertsons in Liberty Lake.

“There is something about the kids going out to collect baby food for other kids in need,” she said. “I think it is so powerful for them to think that there are other children out there who are not as lucky as they are.”

A responsibility and a privilege They say it takes a village to raise a child.

But what of the village? In the United States, we have developed a strong culture of individualism, reflective of the American Dream. We are taught to believe that in this country, anything is possible for any individual. One could argue, however, that we have given so much focus on individual achievement that we have lost focus on doing what is best for our local community.

Blame it on the internet, social media or some other device if you will. The point remains: Few of us truly know our neighbors, and even fewer of us invest our support in them.

There is a poverty that exists in the U.S., but it is not for a lack of resources. In our communities, we do not see individuals hiking 10 miles in one direction to gather water for their family. Our restaurants, stores and households throw away enough food every day to feed all our hungry. Then why do roughly 48 percent of adults here in Spokane report missing meals for a lack of money to buy food? (Source: “Odds against tomorrow: Health inequities in Spokane County,” published by Spokane Regional Health District, 2012) The poverty we know and the poverty we have created in our great country is, in a word, relational. Our relational communities are more easily defined by the address books in our smart phones or on our “friends” list on some website than they are on a local map. In a sense, it should be celebrated that we can connect so easily with friends and family all the way around the world and be able to experience and learn from other cultures not always found in one’s local community. It is our loss, how-

ever, when we lose touch with those living within a stone’s throw of our own front door.

Just as it is a both a great responsibility and a tremendous privilege to parent a child, it is just the same to truly be a member of one’s local community. We need to reconnect with our neighbors and with those we sit next to in church. We need to re-learn to share our stories and our struggles. There is a unique sense of fulfillment found while developing these relationships and while watching our community grow, just as there is a unique sense of fulfillment in watching our own children grow and develop.

Consider for example a local organization called Reach for the Future. Just a few short years ago, a group of friends decided they wanted to invest their time and resources into a group of kids in a low-income, Title-1 school so these kids could later attend college at no cost and dream to be anything they wanted to be. These friends reached out to other friends and grew their network of support. They fundraised to pay for these kids’ college education, and in the meantime invested thousands of hours of time volunteering to support these kids through tutoring and mentoring relationships. Just a few years later, these kids (now entering 6th grade) are testing first and second in the State of Washington for reading, writing and math test scores by comparison to their peer groups at all the other Title 1 schools across the state (a monumental jump in their rankings from just three years prior).

The lives of these kids, their families and the Reach volunteers are forever changed.

Let us not rely on government policy or handouts as the primary solution to our community’s greatest needs. Let us grow more familiar with our own community, and let us experience the struggle and the joy of growing our community together. We are a privileged nation. Just as you and I can attribute our successes and our freedom to countless others, we owe a debt of responsibility to care for and to provide for those who are not currently in a position to do so for his or her own self.

Roskelley claims when he came into office in 1995, the county was half a million dollars in debt with no cash reserves.

After several years using line item budgeting, the commission was able to build up the reserves and increase the county’s bond rating significantly.

“The bond rating came from us,” Roskelley said about the county’s current AA rating. “It took work to build it back up.”

Roskelley claims that over the past eight years, property taxes have raised 13.5 percent.

“That’s outrageous,” Roskelley said. “If property values hadn’t dropped so far, people would notice the increase more.”

Mielke disputes the claim, saying the county opted to take a 1 percent inflation increase in property tax in 20082010.

According to Mielke, if the county doesn’t use the yearly 1 percent increase but can bank it to use at a later date. In 2007, when the Sheriff ’s Department was facing severe reductions, the county voted to use a 10.5 percent banked increase to ensure programs continued, such as school resource officers, detectives designated to prosecute domestic violence crimes and officers tracking sex offenders.

Biviano stated her campaign is based on strengthening family, education and small business.

She further wants to reduce domestic violence by implementing programs that track families.

“Spokane Valley has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in our state,” Biviano said. “This affects all of us.”

Her proposed programs would involve the Sheriff ’s Office, county prosecutors and victim advocates all working together.

According to his website, Shea recognizes public safety as one of his top priorities and was the “prime sponsor of HB 2712 in 2010 to stop the practice of allowing field trips for the criminally insane in the wake of the Phillip Paul escape from the Spokane County Fair.

The bill passed with broad bipartisan support and was eventually signed into law by the governor.”

“That’s 10 percent of the 10 percent allocated for the county,” Mielke said in a phone interview. “It’s not 13.5 percent of the entire pie.”

Mielke explained property tax is divided between the school district, library district and firefighters. The county has 10 percent of the total tax collected. He further added the commissioners have not taken the state-authorized 1 percent increase since 2010.

Candidates voice opposing views on whether to continue to support Greater Spokane Incorporated and its economic development arm.

Mielke serves on the GSI board and plans to continue supporting economic development through GSI. According to Mielke, in the past 10 years GSI has brought 1,700 new jobs to the area.

Roskelley believes a system of accountability should be put in place to track GSI’s progress.

“I want them to show what they’ve done for the community, what impact they’ve made,” Roskelley said about GSI. If GSI is unable to show a noticeable impact with economic development for the community, Roskelley would like to divert the funds to the Sheriff ’s Department.

“With the money allotted, we could put two more deputies on the street,” Roskelley said.

Roskelley said he would at a minimum reduce the salaries for the GSI CEO, who he claims earns an estimated $200,000 a year.

Soccer squad aiming for ‘powerhouse’ status

A young Central Valley girls soccer team placed among the state’s top eight last year, and were it not for a controversial call that wiped out a goal, would have reached the final four.

With all but two players back and an infusion of even more youth, the Bears are positioned to make another run in the postseason.

“The coaches’ goal is we want to be known for soccer,” coach Andres Monrroy said. “We want to be a powerhouse.”

If the Bears make it to state, it will be the team’s third consecutive appearance. They are a win away from earning the top 4A seed into the district playoffs with two matches remaining.

Wednesday, CV (7-0) played fellow unbeaten Mt. Spokane for the GSL title.

There is no star on the team, Monrroy said, with eight sophomores and two freshmen on its 14-player roster.

“What makes us a different team is our chemistry,” Monrroy said. “The girls really trust each other.”

With most of the team returned and the controversial loss still in its memory, CV has something to prove.

“I wouldn’t say we were bitter,” Monrroy said. “We have chips on our shoulder. We know last year we could have been in the final four.”

“U-Hi has a great team with great tradition,” coach Kieran Mahoney told his team. Things went swimmingly given CV’s 1939 triumph, with its five scorers finishing in the top six. Logan Giese led the charge, winning his first individual Greater Spokane League race along the way.

“I’m so proud of him,” Mahoney said. “He’s just one of those kids who has worked incredibly hard for four years now. To win in the GSL, I think, is something special.”
