n Tuesday, April 22, Denim Day was celebrated at the Chabot College Grand Courtyard, where students and faculty members came together to spread awareness of rape and sexual harassment. “Denim Day is a great way to spread the awareness of sexual assault, and what you wear these days is more important than most people think,” said event organizer Leilani Guerrero. Denim Day was inspired by an incident involving an 18-yearold girl and a 45-year-old man who supposedly raped her as she
was taking her driving lessons. But because she wore tight jeans, the driver was not able to remove her pants. The girl had to help him remove it; thus, the act was not considered as rape but as consensual sex, meaning “no one was forced to have sex with one another,” according to the judge’s ruling. Outraged by the statement, women took action and protested against the decision by wearing jeans to work and elsewhere. The protest came to Peace Over Violence Executive Director Patricia Giggans’ attention. Her reaction prompted her to give honor to the girl and to other women who have been sexually harassed, thus she launched Denim Day. “Denim Day is celebrated to highlight the myths that surround the rape survivors,” said Rose Pierre-Louis, a commissioner for Combat Domestic Violence. Tim Wise: ‘White Privilege’ By Leah Daoud

n Wednesday, April 23, well-known educator Tim Wise lectured on topics of white privilege and institutional racism at the Chabot College Little Theater. As a nationally recognized anti-racism activist, who appears regularly on media outlets such as CNN and MSNBC,
Wise provided valuable social commentary, personal anecdotes and statistics. For all those in the audience, it was readily apparent that Wise is an expert on white privilege. The central idea of the lecture, as Wise described it, was that racism is embedded into the American class structure. “Racism is not about overt hostility. It’s woven into the American national
ideology,” explained Wise. To become truly advanced, we must create a society where equality can flourish, one where cultural interaction is based on the equal worth of the individual. The ideal society is one in which our differences are not divisive but are rather celebrated because they contribute toward diversity. Wise, page 3
