STATE YANKS "JIHAD" LICENSE PLATE

From the

In my previous life, I honorably served as the Erie County Comptroller, the taxpayers’ watchdog who eliminated fraud, waste, and abuse within the walls of government.

It’s the same position currently held by John M. Kennedy, Jr,. here in Suffolk County.

While I eventually served nine years and won three countywide elections, I came from the private sector. My mission was to serve as a fresh set of eyes on out-of-control spending by a big bureaucracy to protect taxpayers.

It infuriated me how career politicians had little regard for struggling families who pay to keep the government afloat, who treated taxpayers like an unlimited blank check.

My first idea on how to save

money was actually before I even took office. I was newly elected and meeting with personnel about health care benefits when I was handed a lengthy list of massage therapists and acupuncturists.

That’s when I found out taxpayers were footing the bill for all government employees to receive 12 massages and six acupuncture sessions per year. This is a luxury found nowhere in the private sector.

Keep in mind, I’m all for alternative treatments to surgery that can help people heal at a lower cost.

Close inspection showed most workers were headed to fancy spas and using the perk as a luxury benefit, not an alternative to expensive surgical procedures.

The newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has taken Washington, D.C., by storm over the last three weeks.

As the Trump administration pushes for much-needed transparency in federal taxpayer spending, Democrats watch as their schemes are exposed for the world to see. With each new revelation, outrage spreads across the country.

DOGE’s mission is to identify and eliminate wasteful government spending, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and transparently.

By exposing corruption and mismanagement, DOGE aims to restore public trust and hold officials accountable—something

Americans have long demanded from their government.

This reminds me of when critics attacked Elon Musk for spending $44 billion on Twitter (now X), arguing that the money could have been used to solve world hunger.

By that same logic, we’ve now seen over $100 billion uncovered as wasteful government spending enough to solve world hunger twice over, with money to spare.

Meanwhile, homelessness in the U.S. is estimated to affect between 250,000 and 3 million people, and experts suggest it would take roughly $20 billion to solve the crisis. So, I ask: Why haven’t we done this?

The hypocrisy on display in Washington, D.C., is staggering.

DOGE Report in The South Shore Press

My review showed $1.4 million in taxpayer dollars were spent on this.

Did those savings make a massive dent in a $1.4 billion budget? Of course not, but a constant chipping away of frivolous spending like this sure did, ultimately saving money and finally showing respect to taxpayers who paid the bill in the first place.

For years taxpayers shelled out big bucks for this benefit. The problem: No one bothered to look at the budget, line by line, to ensure tax dollars were being spent wisely.

On a much, much bigger scale, Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are doing exactly that to the federal budget.

The amount of fraud, waste, and abuse they are uncovering is shocking. I firmly believe that up until a few weeks ago, no one within the deep state, Congress, or the White House had ever

DOGE Shakes DC to its Core

If only Democrats fought as hard to end homelessness and hunger as they do to fund projects like gender studies, we might

see real change. Instead, their priorities seem misplaced.

That’s why it’s time for Americans to pay close attention to DOGE and ensure nothing gets swept under the rug. Here at The South Shore Press, we’re committed to keeping you informed.

That’s why I’m proud to announce “The DOGE Report” a special weekly column where Deborah Williams will break down the latest developments and what they mean for you, our valued readers.

The time to rise to the occasion is now, and we’ve gladly taken up that torch. Stay tuned we’re bringing you the facts, unfiltered and unafraid!

South Shore Press EXCLUSIVE: State Yanks

"JIHAD123"

License Plate

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is removing what they admit is a “highly inappropriate plate” with “JIHAD123” on it, after a tipster sent a photo of the plate to the South Shore Press.

After numerous inquiries from the South Shore Press to officials at the NYS DMV pertaining to the validity and appropriateness of the plate, state officials confirmed it was an actual plate they issued, and promised to pull it based on questions and information from the South Shore Press.

“Our system was updated in 1991 to exclude plates containing that word from being issued, however, an error in the system allowed this one to get through. As soon as we became aware of this plate, we took immediate action to remove it from the road and are actively working to adjust the system filter so this never happens again,” said New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Director of Information Walt McClure.

The word “Jihad” is seen by many in the Jewish community as an offensive term promoted by terrorists as a mission to eliminate Israel and kill Jews.

According to the Director

of National Intelligence terrorist guide, Islamic terrorist organizations use the phrase "Jihad" to promote the destruction of Israel.

The European Council on Foreign Relations documents numerous cases where Palestinian/ Islamic terrorist organizations use the specific phrase "Jihad" in their quest to destroy Israel.

When contacted by the South Shore Press and shown the “JIHAD123” license plate issued by the NYS DMV, New York State Assemblyman Kalman Yeger (D-Brooklyn) questioned how it could have ever been issued and gotten past controls to stop it from being on the road.

Yeger wants the NYS DMV to go one step further and refer the plate holder, who the South Shore Press is not identifying, to law enforcement for their review.

“A case can be made that the NYS DMV should immediately forward the identity of this plate holder to the FBI for investigation. It says out loud the state of mind of this person. Anyone who wraps themselves in the cloak of JIHAD should at the very least be on the radar of our top law enforcement agency,” said Assemblyman Yeger exclusively to the South Shore Press.

According to personalized license plate guidelines found on the NYS DMV website, there are specific controls in place to prevent a plate like “JIHAD123” from being issued. They include but are not limited to denying plate requests that:

“Personalized plates bearing a plate number that represents a word, phrase, expression, or that has a meaning, connotation or format that the commissioner deems objectionable shall not be issued.”

Such plates shall include, but need not be limited to, those that the commissioner determines are

(i) obscene, profane, vulgar, repulsive, depraved, or lewd; (iv) are derogatory, contemptuous, degrading, disrespectful or inflammatory; (v) express, describe, advertise, advocate, promote, encourage, glorify, or condone violence, crime or unlawful conduct

Ross Brady, a Jewish member of New York State Conservative Party and a former candidate for Congress wondered to the South Shore Press how the plate “JIHAD123” could have slipped past strict controls.

“Obviously this is a patently

Food Inflation Is Egg-Streme

Still struggling with record inflation over the last few years, consumers have been shellshocked by the soaring cost of eggs. A dozen on Long Island has shot up to $10 as more than 150 million fowl have been euthanized to fight a new strain of bird flu that is sweeping across the nation.

Following the detection of seven bird flu cases in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul shut down markets selling live birds in the city and Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Her order requires the businesses to sell

all inventory, complete cleaning and disinfection procedures, and remain closed until they get a green light from Department of Agriculture and Markets inspectors. Avian influenza can cause sudden death in birds and has a high mortality rate once it infects a flock.

The H5N1 strain of the disease was first identified in geese in China in 1996 and found its way to people in Hong Kong in 1997. With 66 confirmed cases in the U.S., primarily among individuals working closely with poultry or dairy farms, and only one resulting in death, the bird

absurd outcome by a tone deaf bureaucracy. It speaks to either a neglectful or an incompetent bureau of the state of New York. I don’t know if this would happen in another state,” said Brady.

The New York State DMV promised to ensure the “JIHAD123” plate is permanently taken off the road.

“As reflected in our regulations, DMV has zero tolerance for plate combinations that promote violence and that includes plates that contain the word ‘JIHAD’”, said McClure.

As for the Jewish community and reaction to the existence of a “JIHAD123” license plate, many

pointed the South Shore Press in the direction of data that showed anti-Semitic incidents have skyrocketed 360% in the aftermath of the October 7th, 2023 attacks on Israel, according the Anti Defamation League.

“You want to be woke? Maybe they (NYS DMV) should wake up to the fact that we should not be putting JIHAD123 on a plate. Most people look at the word JIHAD and automatically think about hatred and call for the death of Jewish people, but it is more than that. The jihad is against the West. Against the infidels. And those infidels are all of us with westernstyle free thinking Jewish or not,” concluded Ross.

flu is not considered a significant threat to human health.

Its effect on egg prices and the bottom line of local restaurants is another story. Over at the Country Cottage Diner in Center Moriches, owner Jack Schwartz said the wholesale cost of a case of 30 dozen jumped from $35 to more than $200. “We’re holding the line on our menu prices so far, but it hasn’t been easy, especially with the cost of everything else going up,” Schwartz noted.

Also resisting a price hike is Spiro Nikolopoulos at the Moriches Bay Diner. “We don’t want to lose our customers and are keeping prices the same,” he said. “But we’re waiting to see what happens. We’re hoping the inflation starts to go down. If not, we will be forced to change the menu. We don’t want to be the ones who raised prices and then look like we took advantage of the situation when they come back down,” Nikolopoulos said, pointing out that he hasn’t raised prices on his menus in a few years. “Getting all new menus would cost about $6,000,” he said of the multi-page diner offering. “We don’t want to do that.”

As egg prices surged and retailers rationed a limited supply, the epidemic hit at least one Suffolk County farm with a vengeance. Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue made national news when it was ordered to destroy 100,000 birds by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The only duck farm left in a region once famous for its poultry, Crescent let go 45 workers in the wake of the culling. The farm is banking its future on eggs it's been incubating to keep its strain

of Pekin duck alive. Before the outbreak, it had produced about a million birds annually, making up 4.4% of the country’s duck production.

Over at Miloski’s Poultry Farm in Calverton, owner Mark Miloski said the governor’s ban did not affect him. “We’re not a live market selling directly to the public, so we’re not part of that. Everything is fine with our farm. We’re not having any problems.”

Social Media Posts Take Ugly Turn About Proposed Mosque in Shirley

Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the mosque proposed for William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. The Brookhaven Town Board will hold a hearing on the plan February 13 at 3 p.m. at Town Hall in Farmingville.

“Everyone is welcome to attend and can certainly give their views and ask questions about the site plan, parking, traffic, or anything else,” said Supervisor Dan Panico. “However, the law is clear and those who appear and call for the town board to deny this application based on it being a house of worship for people of the Muslim faith will be rebuffed by a town board who respects the constitutionally protected rights of all people.”

The Islaamic Center of Mastic-Shirley plans to build a 35-foot-high, two-story mosque at the corner of Tudor Road. The building will be

approximately 13,000 square feet and feature domed ceilings with two minarets on either side. Residents have expressed concern over off-street parking and the increased traffic the new church could bring.

Supervisor Panico said he was motivated to post his rebuff on social media after more than a hundred comments regarding the proposal appeared on Facebook. Most were supportive of the mosque, while a few crossed the line, Panico noted. “The 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees freedom of religion—not just for your particular religion,” he said, adding that a house of worship on the residentially zoned site does not require a zone change or approval by the town board.

“I feel the need to make this post because I have read some rather disappointing viewpoints as to the interpretation of the law.”

“This is a parkway—a scenic route designed to take you to

the beautiful ocean beach at Smith Point County Park,” Delia Mckernan posted on Shirley and the Mastics. Our Town, Our Community, Our Home! “Instead, our elected officials have allowed it to become an expressway! I'd like to know what are the allotted parking spaces? Will they also be parking on the parkway, which they do now, and it's NOT allowed? People get out there and attend this meeting... TRAFFIC IS RIDICULOUS AS IT IS... this should never have been approved in this location.”

“Funny how everyone forgot about 911 and all is wonderful now,” Vincent Gentile said. His comment was followed by, “Wow, super racist,” from Amanda Green. “Shame on you to cast hate on anyone!” said Donato Sangemino. “There are bad people in every race and religion. Our local Muslim community is just like the rest of us regular folks. Business owners, hard workers, retirees, children and more.”

The Islaamic Center, also called

Masjid Umar Bin Khattaab, was established in 2001 and has grown to about 400 members. Its objective is to “establish and maintain a place of worship for the purpose of congregational prayers (five times daily prayers and weekly Salaatul Jumu’ah) as well as Islamic educational programs in charities for the spiritual development of the Muslim Community.” Muslim leaders are also proposing a 15,000 grave cemetery at the former Spadaro Airport property in East Moriches.

“Safeguarding public health is all about being proactive, and New York State is continuing our coordinated effort to monitor for the Avian Influenza,” Governor Hochul said. “My top priority will always be to keep New Yorkers safe, and I have directed our state agencies to use all available resources to ensure we are taking every measure necessary to keep the risk to the public low. We will continue to take these measured, common sense steps that will curb the spread of bird flu and ultimately protect our communities.”

One answer to the poultry crisis is raising your own. “We believe that people should have the right to enjoy their property and raise chickens responsibly for their families,” said Dan Panico, supervisor for

Brookhaven, which amended the town code last year to allow more birds. Residents can have six hens on lots up to 20,000 square feet and up to 12 for larger properties. No roosters are allowed due to their loud cock-a-doodle-doos. For those looking to keep chickens, they’ll need at least 10 feet between their coops and the neighbors.

“The bottom line is that chickens are an incredible way to upcycle food waste into eggs as a source of nutrition for a family,” Supervisor Panico said. “While the code loosened the prior regulations, we encourage all those who might seek to raise backyard chickens to first educate themselves on best practices and essential implements to protect a flock and maintain a healthy and sanitary backyard. Those who took advantage of

Mark Danowski to Lead St. Patrick's Parade

He’s watched the St. Patrick’s Day Parade march past his business on Main Street in Center Moriches for 21 years. And now Mark Danowski gets to lead the annual event as grand marshal.

“It’s an honor to be following in the footsteps of Clayton Huey, Art Gerhauser, Gerry Sapanaro, and all of the many great leaders of our community who led the parade,” said the local Allstate insurance office owner. The father of five has deep roots in the area, having worked at Heinz Deli as a teen and selling insurance out of the Sears store in Riverhead right after graduating from SUNY New Paltz.

The lifelong Manorville resident graduated from Eastport

High School and attended Suffolk Community College before earning his SUNY business degree. He credits his entrance into the insurance field in 1988 to Don Striplan, a broker he had worked with at the Long Island Game Farm when he was 14.

"Don taught me the insurance business, and it's the only job I've ever had after graduating from college," Danowski noted.

According to Sapanaro, treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce of the Moriches, which sponsors the parade, the grand marshal is a very active member, playing an outsized role in keeping Main Street looking good. “He makes sure the plants get watered,” Sapanaro said of the hanging baskets that brighten the downtown where Mark is an officer with the

Beautification Organization. His office also serves as a hub for the chamber, which meets there and takes advantage of its basement storage.

“Mark was a hard worker; I always knew he would go on to great things and become a pillar of the community,” said Bryan Heller, the former Heinz Deli owner.

The leader of the parade is a 17year member of the Manorville Fire Department and a former member of the Eastport-South Manor Sports Association, where he served on the board for 10 years and directed youth basketball. He’s also coached Little League baseball and softball, boys and girls volleyball, and girls lacrosse. His coaching prowess is evident in the success

these code amendments are not only saving food scraps from the garbage pail, but are saving money with the daily collection of the incredible, edible egg.”

“We’re lucky to have neighbors who have chickens. They give us eggs all the time, and they taste much better than the ones you get at the store,” said Amy Weinhauer of Selden. “One friend has an outdoor coop, and he gets fewer eggs in the winter. The other family has a larger setup with heat for the chickens. They get a lot of eggs all year round.”

To report sick birds, unexplained high number of deaths, or sudden drop in egg production, residents are asked to contact the state’s Division of Animal Industry at 518-4573502 or the USDA at 866-5367593.

Main Street means a lot to the marshal, having met his wife, Missy, a few doors down from his business when her parents, the Knerrs, owned Sunrise Restaurant, and she worked at the nearby North Fork Bank. Missy’s now a teacher at the Little Flower School. They have three other children—Emma and twins Alex and Noah—and all of them will be watching the parade except for Alex, who is in Germany serving with the Air Force.

A popular event that paints the town green every March, the parade will go down Main Street on the 21st starting at 2 p.m.. The chamber will host a fundraising dinner at the Rock Hill Country Club on the 14th. For more info, visit their website at MorichesChamber.org.

The American Nightmare: "The Brutalist" Should win Best Picture (PREDICTION)

With one press conference canceled and another event hilariously reported to a full day early, my Friday afternoon slate freed itself up on Feb. 7th. Ergo: this crime reporter and lifestyle columnist hybrid of late could get back to doing what he has historically done best, and used to do damn-near exclusively: watching movies, and writing about them.

AMC Stony Brook 17’s 2:25 p.m. matinee screening of Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” starring Oscar nominees Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce that day let out at 6:15 p.m. You read that right. Clocking in at just over 3-and-a-half hours, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” (2018) thereby left to hold its palpablybrewed pint, “The Brutalist” notably has a 15-minute intermission built into its 70mm film reel and viewing experience.

It’s the first American release to feature such since Quentin Tarantino’s roadshow tour of “The Hateful Eight” (2015), and only the second film I have seen in theaters that sports a peebreak and drink refill queue halftime component since the 50th-anniversary re-release of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968).

Cinephiles and casual moviegoers alike, do believe the hype: it is not as hyperbolic as you may think at first read that actorturned-auteur Corbet’s bona fide breakout is scored to scan as epicscaled as “2001,” and by far more digestible means.

“The Brutalist” tells the tale of László Tóth (Brody, a HungarianJewish visionary-grade architect who narrowly survives the Holocaust. That his initial optical intake of the Statue of Liberty upon his boat’s dock into America at the culmination of the film’s hot open sequence is shot upsidedown is as blatantly fortuitous as the keen and naked eye could suspect.

Tóth and his family pursue “The American Dream,” only to get gobsmacked with the gruesome divide between what immigrants of this era were sold on paper versus what many were unfortunately subjected to when the dream would runneth awry. This includes horror stories where even those with the talent, intellect and drive to be handplucked from the mud under the charitable guise of generosity could be soon enough expected to do the supremely elite’s bidding in exponentially troublesome ways.

Though it literally took me four days to finish the $17.90, 2-lb. Bavarian cinnamon pretzel I ordered ahead of the most scintillating 4 hours of

Anyone who wins an Oscar that “The Brutalist” was nominated for as well will have to answer to Grok’s answer to “lay your hands off my Oscar, or else.”

entertainment I experienced during a news-week cycle where an NFL team featuring the league-best quarterback and the love interest of the most famous person on the planet going for a Super Bowl three-peat, it took me less time to recognize the cinematic greatness being unleashed before my eyes.

Expanding upon conceits also at play within his frontloaded, but nevertheless slept upon “Vox Lux” (2018), wherein Natalie Portman plays a singer whose popstar was born the day she survived a school shooting, Corbet essentially modern melds his own approach to the “Robert Johnson at the Crossroads” legend.

Like Portman’s Celeste admits, László Tóth sells his soul to the Devil (Guy Pearce as Harrison Lee Van Buren, an industrialist both infatuated with and jealous of Toth’s creative boundlessness). Subsequently, he—and we, the audience—must face the wrath of the Devil’s clap-back.

To cope, Tóth surrenders to the drugscape not-so-hidden beneath the surface of the highscope projects his most prolific client commissions him to design. He is ripped at the seams by his conflicting willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of his family’s good living, but also stubbornly indebted to preserving the sanctity of his great and unparalleled creations, a la Howard Roark in Ayn Rand’s classic, “The Fountainhead.”

“The Brutalist” also surpasses Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” (2024) in the consumability department, re: “Fountainhead”-indebted works. Whereas Coppola seeks to sci-fi grip with long-promised concepts galore, Corbet conducts a grounded drama with the loudest of batons, not in Nolan fashion but with a truly original confidence that mirrors his protagonist’s.

the most shocking punch in a film packed with several. What Corbet achieved in defiance of the nine-figure slogs that define this, a potency-diluded era for the theatrical release—which Tarantino recently declared had actually died in 2019—should, and will be studied in film courses moving forward.

“The Brutalist” is an instant classic in every sense of the term, and will be a sure-fire Oscar winner at next month’s Academy Award ceremony, where latenight comic icon and showman extraordinaire Conan O’Brien is expected to display more reverence and less contempt for the cinematic arts than certain hosts of recent memory.

Just as Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” (2008) invites one to imagine said title applies to both its caped-crusader hero and his agent of total chaos foe, “The Brutalist” describes the type of architect Tóth is, and the personality of the hand that feeds—and feasts—upon him.

By this notion, “The Brutalist” also deeply resonates as a metaphor for the creative process itself. This cannot be coincidental, given Corbet’s set presence as a screen actor before the directorial chapter of his Hollywood life, which was surely wrought with countless “no, you can’t make this” deterrents before he made “The Brutalist.”

The somehow mere $10 million-budgeted effort epitomizes the high-art, commercial darling hybrid that green-lights anything a sudden one-man commodity wants to make next, hence how out there the “Mickey 17” trailer seems compared to Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-netting “Parasite” (2019); but hey, we’re not complaining. Its low budget just may be

The only question remains: how many gold statuettes among their 10 nominations will “The Brutalist” take home?

COVID delays kicked Joel Edgerton out of the lead role, and brought Adrien Brody back to where he belongs. If all goes according to mass predictions, a mob mentality we proudly join, history will not remember him as the one-off winner for “The Pianist” (2002), as a Wes Anderson repertory player, or even as NBA Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley in HBO’s criminally canceled far too soon “Winning Time” (2022-2023) series.

The Academy could have easily made a special exception for its submission criteria to allow Brody to contend, because, let’s face it, his turn as “The Godfather of the Showtime Lakers” was as compelling as it gets.

The next big director on the block is Brady Corbet, who I first caught acting opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt in indie-adored Gregg Akari’s “Mysterious Skin” (2004).

That movie devastated me, and so did this.

Trying to keep up with the crookedness in Washington is like trying to drink out of a fire hose, so The South Shore Press is going to help steady the flow for you and have one spot on our website (SouthShorePress. com) and print edition called the “DOGE Report.”

It will be spearheaded by South Shore Press reporter Deborah Williams. She knows a thing or two about the ways of Washington, D.C. at one time working as a former Regional Director for Senate Minority Leader Chuck

Schumer. Williams worked on Capitol Hill, and now she’ll use that national political expertise to break down DOGE and highlight horrible government spending.

You know what they say when it comes to uncovering government corruption: “Sunshine is the best disinfectant.”

The South Shore Press is about to shine a bright light on the work being done by DOGE every week in our newspaper and online, all to show you the waste within the walls of Washington to cut the very abuse being brought to light.

Local Officials Freak Out Over MTA Payroll Tax

They first tried it in 2009, and the public backlash was so heavy they rolled it back. And now, as if New Yorkers aren’t taxed enough, they’re thinking about it again: a payroll tax to shovel more money at the black hole known as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The tax hit small businesses where it hurt the most, and local governments had to pay a levy on top of the taxes they already collected from the citizenry. The state reduced the rate and limited the list of those who have to pay it, but the payroll tax is still lurking. With the new congestion pricing scheme recently imposed to milk motorists in Manhattan, Long Island officials are apoplectic over talk of resurrecting the payroll fee.

“Instead of burdening hardworking taxpayers and businesses with yet another increase, tax or fee, the MTA must take accountability for its longstanding issues of mismanagement, fraud, and waste,” said Senator Dean Murray, who is leading the payroll tax opposition. They are calling for the establishment of a financial control board as a way to bring fiscal responsibility and transparency to the cash-gobbling agency.

The MTA is on track to spend $19.9 billion this year, with a budgetbusting $68.4 billion capital plan on tap. Its Chairman and CEO, Janno

Leiber, has indicated that the agency is facing a $33 billion budget deficit and has not come up with specific plans to address the shortfall. He has suggested that determining funding sources is up to the state legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul.

The state Senate’s Republican Conference reached out to the governor and Democrat leaders in both houses of the legislature to “make it clear that under no circumstances should the full reinstatement of the MTA payroll tax be considered as a solution to closing the MTA’s budget shortfalls.”

To restore fiscal integrity to the MTA, according to the conference, two critical steps should be taken.

First, conducting a forensic audit will provide full transparency into the agency’s finances and uncover waste, fraud, and inefficiencies.

Second, appointing a Financial Control Board to oversee the MTA’s finances will impose strict financial discipline, close budget shortfalls, and implement necessary reforms to keep the agency on a sustainable path. “These measures will help rebuild public trust and ensure the MTA operates efficiently for the millions of New Yorkers who depend on it,” they said.

“The MTA cannot expect the small businesses, workers, and families already besieged with high taxes and the cost of living in New York to pony up every time they

need money,” said Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano. “We’ve had enough. Before we throw another dime into this black hole, the governor must wring out the MTA from top to bottom and tell us where all the money went.”

The Suffolk legislators were joined by Nassau County Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick of the 9th District in their effort to ward off the payroll tax. “The MTA’s long history of fiscal mismanagement is in need of real reform. We must continue to hold the MTA accountable and ensure that taxpayers and businesses are not forced to foot the bill for its ongoing failures,” she said. “It would be simply unacceptable and irresponsible for the state to attempt to address the MTA’s fiscal woes through an increase in the payroll tax rather than focusing on longterm solutions that promote fiscal responsibility and efficiency.”

One area would be cracking down on fare beaters who cheat the system out of an estimated $800 million annually. With New York’s Progressive politicians unwilling to hold felons responsible under their cashless bail and defund the police policies, there’s little hope they’ll go after the turnstile jumpers and toll evaders.

In the Hudson Valley, where the payroll tax would also soak residents, Senator Rob Rolison

lashed out against the idea. “A return to the payroll tax is not a solution for the MTA’s ongoing budgetary struggles and only puts another burden on the backs of Hudson Valley residents and individuals in the entire MTA region.”

Known as the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax, the fee is currently levied against certain employers and self-employed individuals operating within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. This district encompasses the five boroughs of New York City and the surrounding counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland.

Ironically, it was Murray’s

predecessor in the 2nd District, Brian Foley, who cast the deciding vote for the payroll tax. He was part of a Democrat wave that took control of the upper house after 40 years of GOP control, subjecting Long Island to the wrath of the New York City politicians who have been milking the suburbs ever since. After Foley supported a saltwater fishing license, steep increases in motor vehicle fees, and other unpopular measures, the voters rejected his bid for a second term. Senator Murray has set up an online “No MTA Tax Hike Petition” for those wanting to line up against the tax at www.nysenate.gov/ petitions/dean-murray/tell-albanyno-mta-payroll-tax-increase-yearsstate-budget.

Disney Expanding The Senses

Long Islanders always look forward to winter break, it’s one of the few weeks of the year when we can regroup and have some family fun. This time of year, Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort is offering something wonderful for the entire family.

Yes, you have the world famous rides, Frozen Ever After, Soarin’, Test Track, and Guardians of The Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (which I highly recommend), but for anyone with a passion for both art and Disney magic, there’s no better time to visit Disney World than during it's annual Epcot International Festival of the Arts. The festival is an event that brings together incredible food, stunning visual art, captivating performances, and the perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.

This year, the festival is extra special, with the debut of Once Upon A Stage: 30 Years of Disney on Broadway in the freshly made CommuniCore Hall. Long Island has a lot to offer, but this festival is worth every penny and bite. The festival has been running for a few weeks but you still have time

to visit because it ends February 24. The festival showcases some of the best in food and art. You can literally jump right into famous paintings, paint a piece of a large mural showcased throughout the park, watch art demonstrations, and enjoy one of Disney’s creative animators drawing your favorite character right in front of you at the Animation Academy.

This year, the culinary teams have pulled out all the stops and beautifully put together some culinary creations that are as amazing as they are delicious. With nearly 20 extra food booths to try, you will definitely find that perfect dish invoking the chef’s kiss. Some of the new offerings this year include an Enchanted Rose cake made with a milk chocolate rose with a raspberry and rose center, an entire booth dedicated to fictional delights of the tales of Jules Verne, and in the American Pavilion, a Chicken “Pot Pie” with smoked cheddar mornay sauce that everyone is talking about. For my family it’s all about the Rainbow Cake topped with freeze dried Skittles, located in the Odyssey building. It will melt in your mouth with how moist

and delicious it is. My kids, who are 11 and 7, devoured it, and wanted more. In fact, they didn’t leave much for my husband, but ended up buying three of them, they were that good.

Speaking of kids - be sure to buy the Figment’s Brush with the Masters Scavenger Huntit's under $10 each and fun for the whole family, with a special prize at the end. This year is a car decal, and it looks adorable with Figment as the lead. It’s

perfect for them to do, while you eat and enjoy around the park.

My husband and I look forward to this scavenger hunt every year, it keeps them busy while we enjoy what we love about the World Showcase during the festival. These scavenger hunts are available throughout the year during every Festival at Epcot, so be on the look out when you go.

Epcot alone is worth the price of admission on any day, but if you are looking for something

new and fun to try and do, this is an event you do not want to miss! Besides the demonstrations from artists around the world, food booths offering the best in cuisine, every night there is a live Broadway concert in the American Gardens Theater, which features amazing Disney on Broadway talent like you have never seen before, with a few special guests along the way. If this year is not in the cards and you can't make it down, keep this on your calendar for your next vacation because the Festival of the Arts is only getting bigger and better every year.

Whether it’s a trip just for adults, or the entire family, this festival paints the perfect picture of delight. You can go down, have a vacation and take advantage of all these enchanting offerings because, as Figment would say, imagination is a blast! There is a wonderful world of color, taste, and sound that you can unlock all in one day. You can follow our family page on X under @ wdwwishes_ to keep up with Disney news and for more great tips and exciting Walt Disney World events.

Saturday's SCALA Student Art Show in Babylon Exhibited Strong Social Statements

The Suffolk County Art Leaders Association (SCALA) held its annual High School All County and Scholarship Show at Babylon’s Old Town Hall on West Main Street this past Saturday, Feb. 8th.

Under the All County section, teachers from the 16 participating high schools submitted works from three students for the competition.

The Senior Scholarship leg saw one student from each of the schools compete to receive a monetary sum that would aid in the collegiate art program they plan to attend in the fall. Along with three pieces of artwork, they were required to submit an essay response to the following theme: “What Impact Would You Like Your Artwork to Have?”

"They're very grateful for their work being looked upon by others, being recognized, and it gives them a sense of accomplishment,” Shawn Cullinane, President of BACA’s Board of Directors, told The South Shore Press at Babylon Town Hall this weekend.

When asked what advice he would give those with one foot in the art world still needing that extra push to leap into expressing the creative depths of their soul for all to see, Cullinane responded with admirable candidness. He recommends burgeoning artists

work with their teachers in their local schools, and doubles down on the confidence he has held in the exposure his BACA team and SCALA efforts have granted students over the past 13 years.

“Hopefully, students who are even thinking about it [submitting to the art show] will come to see the exhibit that their colleagues and friends are doing. This could encourage them to participate…"

Cullinane served as a judge in the blind judging-based competition once upon a time, but quipped that he’ll “never do it again” because “all of it is good.” He says award and scholarship winners can make headway with college entries, and even gain entry to the specific universities they desire to attend by touting a SCALA-issued accolade.

Meanwhile, BACA member Tricia Mezzcreates, on the other hand, finds the essay “the most beautiful part.” “Reading the essay brings it to life, and really gets in their head, and why they went in this direction” with their art, she said.

As an arts and culture advocacy organization, BACA is proud to consistently fulfill its mission: to encourage student artists not just through the annual art show, but in coordinating live theater, music, blue-grass festivals, and art classes taught at the Annex in North

Babylon.

They have also collaborated with nearby Argyle Theatre on anniversary galas.

In response to “The Media’s Marionette,” courtesy of North Babylon’s Maired Matthews, Mezzcreates said: “...now that’s a statement” while giving the South Shore Press an exclusive walkthrough tour of the full exhibit display ahead of Saturday’s art show.

Just beneath this entry, Matthews also plugs “An Escape from the Inescapable” — similarly emblematic of what a vivid imagination could supply when commenting on a society run amuck thanks to entrapmentgrade dependency on social media. Both Matthews’ prescient pieces were created in Ms. Lambert’s Mixed Media class.

Half Hollow Hills West senior Mark Heeralall also had quite a lot to say about the state of our world with his 3-D Sculpture Class assignment under educator Jeanette Nourry. His “Attack of the Arachnids” is quite literal—a decaying Earth, equipped with a blood-hungry spider on the prowl.

Additional competitive categories included Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Digital Media, and Video/Animation.

Social media over-reliance and global environmental disregard, as depicted in SCALA’s “Mixed Media” and “3-D Sculpture” competitive categories on Saturday.

“Our annual art show enables the visual artwork of our most talented students to be on exhibit and adjudicated for scholarships,” said SCALA president Dr. Diana Cook. “We are very proud of our students, the dedication they show to their craft, and of the support they receive from their teachers, families, and friends.”

The Suffolk County Art Leaders Association brings quality art educational experiences to art educators and art leaders across Suffolk County. For more information, visit SCALAArt.org. All works will be on exhibit at Babylon’s Old Town Hall headquarters (47 W. Main Street) through March 5th.

Steamfitter Richard A. Harkin, 93, Promoted Long Island Economy

Old photographs of Richard A. Harkin show him welding a pipe and then teaching others how to do it. He appears with the governor at a campaign stop and poses in front of some of Long Island’s most significant construction projects, including the Shoreham nuclear power plant. He rose through the ranks of the Steamfitters Local 638 union, becoming a key advocate of the construction trades and a proponent for the region’s economic development. At 93, the workforce icon was remembered by family and friends, including 12 grandchildren and 11 greats.

The Center Moriches resident and Air Force veteran served as a deputy Public Works Commissioner for Suffolk and the director of Energy Management for Ronel Bennett, having won various awards and citations for his work representing the men and women of labor. A member of the Steamfitters executive board, he was the director of the union’s Political Action Committee, as well as a member of the Long Island Mid-Suffolk Business Action Committee, Nassau/Suffolk Building Trades Council, and the 110 Republic Airport Action Team. He was a member of the Long Island

Regional Coordinating Council, Long Island Association's Energy Committee, and was even part of the Committee for Reasonable Government.

“When Governor Mario Cuomo came to Long Island, my dad gave him a hard time for not doing enough for the workers,” his son, Richard, said. “He was involved with everything that had to do with promoting construction and jobs on Long Island.”

His passing was announced by his daughter, Peggy Harkin Reinwald. “He was always willing to try new things, to learn new things,” she said. “His stories were many, and they will live on in us. He was an inspiration to his family on how to live life to the fullest. Thank you, Dad, for everything. You will be missed.”

In winning the Business Action Committee’s Front Page Award, Harkin was recognized for his “dedicated leadership in management-labor cooperation in projects advancing Long Island's economy and quality of life, and for aggressive representation of union positions on political issues.”

Working for the county for 17 years, Harkin was honored by County Executive Steve Levy

for “performing his duties as Assistant to the Commissioner in a consistently professional manner, providing the support necessary for the smooth operation of the

Suffolk County Department of Public Works.”

Harken was president of the Moriches Bay Little League when

the final payment was made on the mortgage to buy its Beachfern Road field, noted his son Richard, who was on the Cubs at the time. He spent many a summer day with his family boating on Moriches Bay and later enjoyed watching radiocontrolled planes and boats.

“He was a good man,” said his Center Moriches neighbor Ed Romaine, the current Suffolk Executive who issued him a proclamation back in 1989 when he was a county legislator. “He was involved in many construction projects and made sure the work was done right, and the workers were treated well.”

In addition to Richard and Peggy, he is survived by sons Arthur and Kevin, grandchildren Kevin, Rich, Scott, Ryan, Shea, Leah, Julia, Sebastian, John, Kerry, Kim, and Mike, along with 11 great-grandchildren. Originally from Greenpoint, Brooklyn, he met his wife, Elizabeth, on a blind date. The couple moved to Center Moriches in 1958, where his wife of 62 years predeceased him.

Straight Out of a Gillian Flynn Novel: Sagamore Aide Arrested for Sexual Conduct with Teenage Human Trafficking Victim, Post-Rescue

The cross between “American Horror Story” and “Twin Peaks: Long Island Edition” did not fade away with a happy ending ride off into the sunset upon an emotionally aching father’s movie-like one-man rescue mission of his month-long missing daughter.

As of Saturday, Feb. 8th, a dozen individuals have now been arrested in connection with the disappearance and sexual exploitation of a 14-year-old girl from East Patchogue.

The victim’s name has been omitted by select organizations at various official stopgaps, given the sensitive nature of the gruesome information being regularly disseminated. Nevertheless, it’s been mass-reported since the moment she was first christened a high-profile missing person back in December that one Emmarae “Emma” Gervasi is the victim of the harrowing human trafficking in question.

With the relentlessness of this case, and as proper authorities diligently and dutifully plow ahead while electing not to comment, Emma and her outspoken father, Frank, have since become the media-tabbed faces of exposing the sick, cruel and twisted nastiness lurking within the darker realm of Long Island suburbia.

Human trafficking is undeniably an international issue. On the local front, heads turn, nay, roll upon each new development that confirms just how many deplorables deal in downright devilish activities nearby.

Emma’s full-custody father’s plentiful, makeshift press conferences self-taped and recorded from the driver's seat of his parked car have rendered him an unlikely online sensation.

In her lone media interview— with Greater Long Island, immediately following a devastating Christmastime amidst the visceral heartbreak of her daughter’s absence, Emma’s schoolteacher mother, Melissa Dervay, said she was on the straight A’s and narrow complications path before a significant traumatic event Emma experienced brought forth a litany of behavioral, mental and substance issues.

Having developed a propensity to run away, Emma’s divorced parents and live-in step-mom were not sure if Emma—who had recently been treated for substance abuse in Minnesota and released under ankle monitor supervision— deliberately fled her East Patchogue home on Dec. 9th.

Emma’s parental triumvirate had thoroughly limited Emma’s social media interactions after she posted sexually suggestive content to Instagram and TikTok, often

scantily clothed or in lingerie. She also once posted a video at 4 a.m. of her driving a car at just 13 years old.

Though she did not own a cellphone at the time of her abduction, the Gervasi patriarch would later divulge in an appearance on “The Dr. Phil Podcast” that Emma found a “workaround” via her stepmom’s iPad. On this device, Emma made contact with nefarious individuals she was too trusting of; on the evening of Dec. 9th, Emma summoned an older man she had been speaking with over Snapchat for a year to report to her home.

She reportedly left her home barefoot and under massive rainfall, and entered the Blue Honda of this predator—the first of 12 criminally charged defendants in the case. Doorbell camera footage from neighboring homes do not prove whether she did so voluntarily, or under the duress of a threat.

Twenty-five days after leaving out her front door to “retrieve something” from a truck in the driveway, as she told her stepmom, Emma was recovered by her father Frank in a vigilante-certified, adrenaline-fueled boatside stampede. Following a wee-hour tip that panned out, Frank's seasidelocked daughter was returned to his arms in a hugging embrace.

Suffolk County Police, understandably “mum's the word” during an open investigation, and emergency medical services responded soon thereafter. Emma Gervasi was found alive, albeit “out of it” and unwell, having been freed from multiple weeks of captivity aboard a 56-foot luxury yacht known as “The Phoenix,” and docked in Islip’s Whitecap Marina.

In the weeks to come, a policeled crackdown upon a cavalcade of crackheads and cretins has successfully been forged. If proven guilty, the dirty dozen suspects are all just as responsible for giving the South Shore, and Long Island in general, a bad name and a worse stench with reverberative linger.

Court reports and second reference-relayed details extracted from statements provided to police by Emma thus far confirm and allege:

Alton Harrel, 35, maintained a year’s worth of online communication with Emma before she got into his car on the night of Dec. 9th. After surveillance footage caught her knocking on motel doors in Bohemia, she was held in a Bellport home by Harrel for the next 24 hours

Shortly thereafter, Emma ended up with Kevin McDonald, 20, Daniel Burke, 63, and Robert Eccleston, 61, in a trailer park home

Francis Buckheit, 64, next held her captive on the aforementioned boat, which he owns, from Dec. 13th until her rescue—a period

in which many visitors either appeared or paid to manipulate, endanger and assault Emma. He was the first arrested, one day after Emma’s rescue

Elizabeth Hunter, 34, and Jackquelyn Comiskey, 52—a grandmother and also the daughter of a decorated late cop honored at Robertaccio’s Funeral Home in Patchogue this past December — offered Emma to Bunice Knight, 47, in exchange for crack cocaine.

Frank Gervasi told The NY Post Comiskey called in the anonymous tip. Per suspecting her involvement, he refused to provide Comiskey the $15,000 reward he had been offering for Emma’s safe return

Ralph Knowles, 63, raped, forcibly touched and taunted Emma on the boat, to whom he provided crack cocaine on numerous occasions before and during the assaults

Rebecca Browell, 48, who cohabitates with Knowles, provided drugs to Emma and was aware she was both underage and having sexual relations with adult men

Daniel Soto, 36, had sex with the teen between Dec. 13-20 on the boat

Every individual listed in the bullet-pointed breakdown has been charged with sexual and/or drug-related offenses central to this sprawling saga.

Those on the outside looking in and deeply associated with the case anticipate additional revelations and twists.

"There’s more to the story than is

undue backlash he has received— for instance, implications from Internet commenters that, as a former amateur pornstar, he makes for a problematic new posterboy for “Protect Our Children” campaigns.

“It’s easy to drop comments about my pornos that I made a few years ago – which, who gives a s–t anyway? Those are consensual adults – has nothing to do with me being a father, nothing to do with my family at all,” he said.

Last month, Gervasi told Dr. Phil: “There’s a lot of missing children out here—not just in Suffolk County, but across Long Island.”

“When my daughter went missing, it made us paranoid. It’s a huge problem out here, and across the country.”

“There are predators everywhere… You don’t necessarily need a phone to get in trouble these days. Be diligent, and keep an eye on your children.”

This month, he is not saying as much, perhaps because even after Emma’s rescue, there are likely still more players to hold accountable who have yet to make the perp walk they deserve.

going on here," Knowles' attorney Chase Brown said, in conjunction with sentiments expressed by various other defense attorneys tied to the case. "We look forward to discovery to find out the merit, if any, to these allegations."

Brown hit it right on the money. Days prior to his client’s arrest, arguably the most head-scratching development within the case thus far occurred.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4th, Deshaun McClean, 42—an aide at Sagamore Child Psychiatric Center where Emma was admitted for further evaluation and treatment after being rescued—was charged with making criminal sexual contact with her, as first reported by Newsday.

Court reports that sight surveillance footage at the staterun mental facility and statements provided by the victim-once-again conclude McLean groped Emma on Jan. 9th and Jan. 23rd.

“This poor girl,” a Lake Ronkonkoma mother of three shared in conversation with The South Shore Press.

Other local parents polled were equally melancholic—asking versions of the following:

“What is going on?”

“What is happening to our home?”

“Where can our children feel and be safe?”

Followers of the case of all ages are dialed into its objective wackiness–not just limited to Frank’s “Dr. Phil” spot, but also what he considers the

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney mentioned it in his re-election announcement last month, and Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., and Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina followed suit last week. Suffolk County’s jail has the first human trafficking unit in the nation, which Toulon started in 2018.

"They [human traffickers] find them. They exploit them mentally. They ultimately find a way to meet up with them physically," Commissioner Catalina said. “They offer them drugs and fake love...."They turn around after a period of time and say, 'Hey, now you have to pay me back.”

Meanwhile, attorneys for today’s held defendants posit Emma was not as hopeless or helpless as it seems; that though she was a minor who cannot legally consent to sexual activity with adults, she was complicit in soliciting the presence of drug dealers who she summoned via a phone purchased for her by alleged abuser and captor, Francis Buckeit.

The latter’s lawyer, Michael Ross, adds that Emma’s witness statement is “a sad, horrible tale of a girl who is very lost in life” and “traveling across Suffolk County smoking crack and being with various people.”

Whatever comes next within the investigation into Emma Gervasi’s disappearance and captivity continues to unfold, the truth will surely remain stranger than fiction indeed.

Letitia James: Hospitals Must Perform Sex Change Operations on Kids

A big battle is brewing between President Donald Trump and New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The issue: whether or not hospitals can continue performing sex change operations on children in New York State and across the country.

The new commander in chief signed an executive order called "Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation."

The order bans using puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, and surgical procedures that cause permanent changes to a minor child’s body in the impossible effort to change a person’s sex. It applies to children and teenagers under 19 years old.

Federal funds for hospitals that continue these surgeries would be in jeopardy.

"It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or

support the so-called 'transition' of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures," says the order.

New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James

(D-NY), however, demands New York’s hospitals and physicians continue sex change operations on children, stating that stopping the surgery would be a violation of New York State civil rights laws.

James sent a letter to New

York health care providers saying that hospitals have "obligations to comply with New York state laws," adding that refusing service to "transgender individuals" goes against antidiscrimination laws.

"Electing to refuse services

to a class of individuals based on their protected status, such as withholding the availability of services from transgender individuals based on their gender identity or their diagnosis of gender dysphoria, while offering such services to cisgender individuals, is discrimination under New York law," the letter stated.

Trump's order states: “The blatant harm done to children by chemical and surgical mutilation cloaks itself in medical necessity, spurred by guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which lacks scientific integrity.”

Twenty-two states have banned gender-affirming care for people younger than 18, and much of Western Europe either bans entirely or severely limits sex modification interventions to children under 18. This includes the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Holland, and Sweden.

Man on the Street Asks About Sex Changes for Children

The Attorney General’s decision to defy President Trump’s order and encourage hospitals to continue performing life-altering genderchanging surgeries on children is not just reckless, it’s dangerous. Children should be protected and cherished, not used as political pawns to appease radical activists. Kids deserve time to grow, learn, and develop naturally without being pushed down a path that leads to irreversible harm.”

Angelo Veltri, Save Long Island President, Shoreham

our children.”

The people who push transgender surgeries on children should be arrested. You can’t tell me a nineyear-old wants to change their sex. They are being brainwashed by evil people with political motives. This is not okay. These children are being violated.”

This is actually child abuse, and the fact that the attorney general thinks it's okay is appalling. Letitia James should be focused on making New York safer instead of this woke nonsense. President Trump is trying to make America great again, and this is what he gets from the Democrats? It's pathetic.”

Kelly Tobin, Yaphank

I never thought l would see the day when the attorney general of the state of New York is fighting the president over sex change operations for children. The motivation of the people pushing this is sinister. I’m proud of President Trump for taking a stand. Letitia James should be ashamed of herself.”

The Wokeness of the Democrats has gone way too far, and it’s hard to believe that the attorney general goes along with it. She’s backed by people like George Soros, who don’t have this country’s best interests at heart and are rather diabolical in what they are doing. Seeing how they support sex change operations on kids is all you need to know about where they’re coming from.”

Threat to Democracy: New York Democrats Rushed to Delay Special Elections and then Backed Down

Word leaked about ten days ago that New York Democrats were conniving to delay the special election to replace Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-North Country). This would leave nearly 800,000 New Yorkers without representation in Washington, DC for months.

The bill was introduced late last Friday night and the battle to prevent NY Democrats from subverting current state law, and the will of the voters, began.

Congressman Mike Lawler (R-Hudson Valley), likely opponent of Gov. Hochul next year, said, “New York Democrats are engaged in an effort to subvert democracy and prevent voters from having their voices heard. They want to give Gov. Hochul the ability to delay filling NY21 until November. This is RICO. I’m asking DOJ to investigate immediately.”

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) has been driving the push to change NY election law and keep Elise Stefanik's House seat open for as long as possible.

Lawler sent a letter to the US Department of Justice asking for a racketeering (RICO) investigation and a look into Rep. Jeffries, NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins (D-Westchester) and NYS Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx).

"Governor Kathy Hochul has no interest in fair and honest

government. Her latest assault on New York's Constitutional protections has made it official. It's all power politics all the time now in Albany - Democracy be damned,” said NYS Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar.

Stefanik is set to become the US Ambassador to the United Nations under President Trump necessitating the resignation of her seat in Congress. Under current NY law, Governor Kathy Hochul has 10 days to declare a special election for Stefanik’s seat and an additional 80 to 90 days to hold the election.

“The process for holding special elections was reformed in 2021 after years of governors playing games and refusing to call special elections for political reasons.

The state legislature was right to reform the process in 2021,” says Joe Burns, election law expert and partner at Holtzman Vogel.

“The bill that was introduced by Speaker Heastie and Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins will undo the 2021 reform and result in New Yorkers being disenfranchised and unrepresented.”

The seat is in a solidly Republican district, so why delay? With a slim margin in the House, every seat the Democrats can keep vacant for any extra day, they see as a hardship for Republicans and more importantly, Trump.

The Conservative Party, the Republican Party and many other groups and individuals who support NY laws and the process of

handed, single-party rule.”

The Conservative Party announced its support for any lawsuits needed to defend the rights of New York voters with Kassar saying, “We support Congressman Mike Lawler's call for a RICO investigation of top-to-bottom corruption in New York State government. These naked attempts have been stopped in court, one after another, by the Conservative Party and other defenders of democratic norms.

New York Republican Party Chairman, Ed Cox, said “Power hungry Dems using their single party NY rule and backroom deals to deny NY voters their representation in Congress. Hochul enables this and the continual corruption of NY’s democracy by the Dems ham-

Suddenly Monday afternoon, word leaked out that the ‘Bill is Dead”.

Conservative Party of NYS Chairman, Gerry Kassar, says “My opinion on why this bill will not go forward is that efforts by Republicans, Conservatives, and Good Government people prevailed upon the state legislature to not go forward with legislation to allow Governor Hochul to delay the NY21 election.”

“The bill to delay the special election for the 21st Congressional District is no longer moving forward. It was a terrible piece of legislation in policy & principle,” said Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski ).

Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt (R,C-WNY) said, “While this bill appears to be defeated for now, the Senate GOP will remain vigilant against any effort to bring it back. The fact that Democrats even attempted this sham is proof of how corrupt and desperate the Albany swamp has become.”

“I guess the public outcry was too much for the Democrats on this one,” said Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano. “The voters have caught on to the lengths they will go to in their attempts to stay in power and backed them down. This is a good day for Democracy. Let’s just hope we’ve seen the last of their manipulative behavior.”

“I stood in the NYS Capitol and called out Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries on their BULLSHIT! This is nothing but a corrupt plot to block President Trump and the America First agenda,” said Assemblyman Chris Tague (R,C-Schoharie). nothing but a corrupt plot to block President Trump and the America First agenda,” sais Assemblyman Chris Tague (R,C-Schoharie).

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-Hudson Valley) wants some reassurance that this ill-fated, anti-democratic effort is really dead. Lawler says, “As with everything in New York, it ain’t dead until it’s over. Gov. Kathy Hochul needs to publicly state that she will not support this corrupt scheme and attempt to thwart the will of the voters. She should answer for this publicly and clearly — today.”

South America Crime Fighter Offers U.S. a Hand in Corralling Criminals

Bukele’s crackdown on crime transformed his country from one of the world's most dangerous to one of the safest in South America. His strategy was simple: build a mega-prison and lock up the criminals.

Bukele’s crime-fighting credo has expanded to the U.S. as President Trump is rounding up violators and shipping them out. For felonious immigrants who came in illegally, it’s then back to their country of origin with a stop, if necessary, at the prison in Guantánamo, Cuba. Trump is also considering an offer by the El Salvadoran president to jail them at his Terrorism Confinement Center.

Bukele’s prison is ruled with an iron fist. Inmates have their heads shaved and are handcuffed together by the hundreds when outside of their cells. There are no TVs or cellphones, and visitors are not allowed. The president made completion of the prison a top priority, having promised to end

the gang violence that wracked his country, and was heralded by the citizens for making El Salvador safe again.

Resistance by other countries to take back the criminals deported by Trump evaporated when he threatened them with stiff tariffs.

President Gustavo Petro at first refused to allow planes filled with deportees to land in Colombia, then offered his own plane to transport them after Trump got tough. Mexico and Canada also resisted the repatriation, as well as Trump’s request to stop the flow of fentanyl and other deadly drugs flowing through their countries. His tariff stance softened when Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum stationed 10,000 troops along the southern border, and Justin Trudeau agreed to cooperate.

Trump noted that he has received offers from several countries to jail U.S. detainees for a fee. “It’s a very small fee compared to what we pay to private prisons,” Trump said. “If we could make a deal to get these animals out

of our country, l would do it in a heartbeat. We’re talking about people who hit old ladies in the back of the head with a baseball bat and people who take out a gun and shoot you for no reason or push you in front of a subway. If we could put them in a different country under the supervision of somebody who made a relatively small fee to maintain these people, I’d be glad to do it.”

Nassau Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, has assigned 10 detectives to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and offered the use of his county’s jails to hold prisoners for deportation. His cooperation is a far cry from jurisdictions controlled by Democrats who have vowed to impede Trump’s deportation efforts.

Border Czar Tom Homan blasted Aurora, Colorado officials for leaking information that compromised an ICE raid on members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. The operation aimed to apprehend at least

100 gang members, but due to the leak, only one member was arrested. “This is a dangerous job for the men and women of ICE and Border Patrol and all the DOJ agencies,” Homan said. “To have that type of interference puts our officers at great risk.” The Border Czar warned that individuals

impeding federal operations “may find themselves in a pair of handcuffs.”

Since January 20, the Trump administration has deported about 17,000 illegal immigrants to 121 countries. Millions more will follow, the president said of the aliens allowed in by Joe Biden.

Mental Health Concerns of First Responders Can Be 'Crushing like a Heart Attack'

New York’s first responders are exposed to high-stress situations, traumatic events, and life-threatening environments. Constant exposure to intense scenarios and critical incidents puts them at significant risk for developing mental health conditions.

New York conducted a first responder mental health needs assessment (MHNA) for the first time. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and the Institute for Disaster Mental Health (IDMH) at SUNY New Paltz partnered with the Benjamin Center at SUNY New Paltz to conduct the inaugural survey.

Over 6,000 NYS first responders participated in the survey citing chronic stress as the main factor in any mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, PTSD, burnout, and substance abuse.

“The mental well-being of first responders deserves attention, especially given their critical role in maintaining public safety and providing emergency assistance,” says the report.

First responders self-reported challenges with 94% reporting that stress followed by burnout (90%), and anxiety (87%). Depression (53%) and PTSD (38%) are also concerns. Thoughts of suicide were reported by 16% of first responders. Reports of anxiety were most frequent among emergency communications officials.

Firemen and other first responders are not able to save everyone all the time. Sometimes people do die at a scene and that's traumatic. When that happens there are post-incident briefings.

“Years ago there was an incident where three kids perished in a fire. We got there and the whole front of the house was involved. My guys tried to make entrance into the house,” said Biondi. “We did the best we could. We made it to where the kids were. We carried them. But all three of them had passed away.

“After the fire, around midnight, we had a crisis team at the firehouse sitting down with everyone. Nobody went home. Everybody was sitting around with the crisis team, making sure that everybody was comfortable in dealing with what happened. And then, after that, if you needed more help, then the help

was available.”

The traumatic events first responders are exposed to are the leading cause of stress followed by public perception of the profession and not enough time to spend with family and friends. For municipal first responders, shift work and overtime were stressors.

“If there’s anyone in my department that has a problem we help them through it,” says Bill Biondi, Commissioner of the Mastic Beach Fire Department. “When someone is applying, we make sure that the family is behind them 100%. We tell the family everything that could possibly happen and help them prepare for the job.”

When asked about how you prepare a firefighter for the inevitable fear of going into a fire Biondi said, “You get used to it, You do have to fear, but with today's training, we try to teach everybody with the worst case scenario what could happen if you get yourself into a situation. We always tell everybody to use the buddy system. Don't be a hero by yourself.”

Explaining a reaction to traumatic calls, one first responder stated, “I’m smiling on the outside but sobbing on the inside. I try my

best to seem strong and unbothered. But if someone asked me if I was okay I would probably break.”

Another characterized mental health as “by far the biggest problem in my life...it is crushing like a heart attack.”

The stigma and fear of judgment from peers surrounding mental health issues can discourage first responders from admitting they need help. Stigma was cited by 80% as a reason that keeps responders from seeking care for mental health challenges.

“There are strong stigmas associated with any kind of weakness shown...mental health is seen as a bit of a joke,” said one respondent.

Concerns about potential career impacts, such as loss of security clearances and pistol licenses can deter first responders from seeking help. There is a cultural suppression of males expressing feelings in a male-dominated field. The first responders are also not good at admitting weakness or vulnerability.

Black Conservatives Weigh In for Black History Month - There Is No One Way to Be Black

February is Black History Month and on the heels of the recent presidential election, The South Shore Press will be listening to the points of view of black Conservatives and Republicans that are often overlooked, and even ridiculed, by the mainstream press.

President Donald Trump won more black votes than any Republican candidate in nearly 50 years. Trump’s support among black men under 45 almost doubled compared to 2020, with about 30% in this age group voting for him. In total, 25% of black men

voted for Trump, which was up by several points from the 2020 election.

Lew Mitchell, a member of the Republican Party attending the NYS Conservative Party annual conference, spoke about what he thinks about the concept that, and pressure for, black people to think and vote a certain (approved) way.

“I believe that the socialist power is very concerned with manipulating black people into self-destruction-not only self-destruction but a nationdestroying configuration,” said Mitchell.

Black and brown voters have

been taken for granted by the Democrat Party for a long time. Assumptions that the black community is a monolith in its thinking run strong and, as it turns out, is also wrong.

“There’s definitely a program to manipulate black people into a political configuration that's destructive to the nation-state and destructive to the black people. The Socialist program is about impoverishing black people,” Mitchell said. “There's also a propaganda aspect. Greenwashing is very sophisticated, there's a lot of money behind it, and there's a lot of payoffs for those in the black community that will go along with it for the paycheck.”

During this last election, when Democrats were beginning to worry about the black vote and black men in particular, they sent former President Barack Obama out to scold black men into voting for Kamala Harris.

At an event, Obama essentially said that black men who were not voting for Harris were misogynists, “And you are thinking about sitting out?” he said. “Part of it makes me think — and I'm speaking to men directly — part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren't feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you're coming up with other

alternatives, and other reasons for that.”

More black voters found Trump attractive this time around.

“President Trump is a very downto-earth honest person, he's not a politician and people can see that people recognize that he's not a scripted politician,” said Mitchell about why some black voters, especially black men, left the Democrats behind and voted for Trump.

“The Democrat regime under Biden was so egregious. It's obvious to anybody who's not ideologically stuck in a corner to see the destruction in the last four years alone. The destruction is more visible than it's ever been,"

said Mitchell.

The media is a big part of feeding bias and sometimes outright false information to voters. Mitchell weighed in about how new media, podcasts, and younger black influencers in media and music are becoming a key element in reaching people.

“The media demonization of Trump didn’t stick, some of it sticks, but it didn’t stick the way it normally does. There is an awakening, it's not what it should be, but there is a slow awakening that there is a script that's being fed to black people, and it's becoming more obvious. We're trying to accelerate the awakening.”

Trump Skewers Deep State Agency, Looks to Save Billions

Taxpayers loathe wasteful government spending, especially on bizarre programs that do nothing for them, such as transgender comic books in Peru, DEI in Serbia, and transgender operas in Colombia. These are just a few of the items the Biden administration threw billions at, leading President Trump to declare enough is enough.

With the stroke of a pen, the new boss in the White House shut down a massive purveyor of the waste: the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Looking to save the $43 billion they blow every year, he locked the door to their office and sent the spendthrifts home. The move was one of the first savings identified by the new Department of Government Efficiency, a Trump campaign promise that helped propel him back into office.

USAID was started in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to administer civilian foreign aid and development assistance. In recent times, it’s been criticized as a slush fund that promotes woke ideology and lines the pockets of the deep state.

“Everything they do has to be

in alignment with the national interest and foreign policy of the United States,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who Trump appointed to take over the agency. “The attitude USAID has adopted over the years is, ‘No, we are independent of the national interest; we fund programs irrespective of whether it’s aligned or not aligned with the national interest,' and that’s ridiculous.”

As national attention focused on the wasteful agency, reports emerged that the taxpayer funds were used to go after President Trump. The CIA and other clandestine operators tapped the money pot to disrupt governments across the globe using strategies such as media manipulation and legal tactics that were then turned on Trump. Analysts say USAID funds were used to foment Russia Gate—the ruse that Trump conspired with Vladimir Putin to win the election—and the Ukraine impeachment, where the Democrats accused the president of telling Volodymyr Zelenskyy he would withhold U.S. aid if he didn’t investigate President Biden’s shady dealings with the country.

Trump himself said the agency had been run “by radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out.” The

White House lashed out at a comment by Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar that the move “is what the beginning of a dictatorship looks like,” as well as Sen. Chris Murphy implying that Rubio was lying about the waste, fraud, and abuse within the agency.

“Fact,” the White House wrote, “Ending U.S. taxpayer funding of transgender comic books in Peru, DEI in Serbia, and transgender operas (whatever those are) in Colombia is not akin to a ‘dictatorship.’ It’s holding unelected bureaucrats accountable for their spending decisions.” The president took particular exception to funding that went to the Chinese Communist lab in Wuhan, where he said the COVID-19 virus was developed.

For decades, “USAID has been unaccountable to taxpayers as it funnels massive sums of money to the ridiculous—and, in many cases, malicious—pet projects of entrenched bureaucrats, with nextto-no oversight,” according to the White House, which cited these examples:

• $1.5 million to “advance diversity equity and inclusion in Serbia’s workplaces and business communities”

• $70,000 for the production of a “DEI musical” in Ireland

• $2.5 million for electric vehicles in Vietnam

• $47,000 for a “transgender opera” in Colombia

• $32,000 for a “transgender comic book” in Peru

• $2 million for sex changes and “LGBT activism” in Guatemala

• $6 million to fund tourism in Egypt

• Hundreds of thousands of dollars for a non-profit linked to designated terrorist organizations — even AFTER an inspector general launched an investigation

• Millions to EcoHealth Alliance — which was involved in research

at the Wuhan lab

• “Hundreds of thousands of meals that went to al Qaedaaffiliated fighters in Syria”

• Funding to print “personalized” contraceptives birth control devices in developing countries

• Hundreds of millions of dollars to fund “irrigation canals, farming equipment, and even fertilizer used to support the unprecedented poppy cultivation and heroin production in Afghanistan,” benefiting the Taliban

“The list literally goes on and on—and it has all been happening for decades. Under President Trump, the waste, fraud, and abuse ends now.”

Trump Sovereign Wealth Fund: Investments for the People

Having a successful businessman as president brings an expertise with money not usually seen in the White House. Staring down a humongous national debt set to grow by a trillion dollars every 100 days courtesy of his predecessor, Donald Trump is coming up with some inventive ways to make America wealthy again.

His latest idea is the creation of a Sovereign Wealth Fund that will allow the nation to invest in moneymaking enterprises. Signing an executive order “to promote the long-term financial health and international leadership of the United States,” Trump promised the fund will “maximize the stewardship of our national wealth for the sole benefit of American citizens.”

According to the president, having its own investment account will allow the nation to “promote fiscal sustainability, lessen the burden of taxes on American families and small businesses, establish economic security for future generations, and promote United States economic and strategic leadership internationally.”

Assigning the task to the Secretaries of the Treasury and Commerce, in close coordination with the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, Trump called for a plan in 90 days detailing funding mechanisms, investment

strategies, fund structure, and a governance model. The plan must evaluate the legal considerations for establishing and managing such a fund, including any need for legislation.

Under Trump’s strategy, the nation will tap surplus reserves, natural resource revenues, and trade surpluses to invest in stocks, bonds, real estate, and other assets to generate long-term wealth to help create a “New Golden Age for America.” The government has an extraordinary edge in making these investments, as seen in Trump’s power to shut down TikTok, the lucrative social media app critics

say China uses to spy on the U.S. and manipulate its youth. Trump offered to allow the site to continue operating as long as it transfers it to American ownership and makes the government a 50% partner, a deal that could generate billions.

Members of Congress realized long ago the government's ability to enrich those in the know with the power to move markets. Former President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and many others have been criticized for making millions through the inside information and authority afforded by their offices.

The U.S. will join other nations with substantial government

kitties. With $1.5 trillion in assets, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global is the largest in the world. The account is financed primarily through the country’s oil and gas revenues, taxes, licensing fees, and the state’s interests in petroleum activities. It invests in real estate, renewable energy projects, government and corporate bonds, and stocks such as Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.

The Public Investment Fund in Saudi Arabia, for example, grew its pot to $925 billion, a lot of it from oil money, by investing in real estate, tourism, entertainment, sports, and sustainable development.

Trump has a difficult row to hoe in straightening out the financial mess left by the Biden administration. The national debt weighs in at an economy-crushing $36.4 trillion, and the country continues to bleed money at a torrid pace. The Democrats' Green New Deal policies seek to lock up America’s vast oil and gas reserves and put the nation’s energy future in the hands of other countries, such as Communist China.

Trump’s fighting back by ordering his administration to abide by the bottom line. He’s declared a national energy emergency to Make America Energy Dominant Again, pledged to cut ten regulations for every new regulatory action, and outlined a plan to deliver the largest tax cut in history for hardworking Americans. He’s also creating an External Revenue Service, which will collect money for the taxpayers, versus the IRS, which collects it from the taxpayers. He’s threatened tariffs for better trade deals and is pressuring other nations to pony up to NATO for their own defense instead of U.S. taxpayers carrying the load.

The $43 billion Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency is wringing out of the Agency for International Development is a start as taxpayers hope their billionaire president gets them off the hook for the $323,000 each one owes for the country’s red ink.

The Sports World Reacts to a 'Yuge' Victory for Women

This past week we all watched as dozens of young female athletes surrounded President Trump as he put pen to paper on a new executive order protecting women's sports.

Trump called the order “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” and fittingly signed it on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It was a monumental sigh of relief for so many female athletes and parents around the country, but the response to it all spoke even louder than the signing itself.

The next day the NCAA changed its policy for transgender athletes and said the only people who could compete in women's sports were those who were assigned female at birth. The NCAA policy change begins immediately and applies to all athletes regardless of previous eligibility reviews.

"We strongly believe that clear, consistent, and uniform eligibility standards would best serve today's student-athletes instead of a patchwork of conflicting state laws and court decisions," NCAA President Charlie Baker said. "To that end, President Trump's order provides a clear, national standard."

The NCAA's decision, and President Trump's order was applauded by athletes from every spectrum of sports. Perhaps the biggest advocate for this movement was Riley Gaines. The former Kentucky swimmer, who watched first place be awarded to a biological male, and was forced to change in the locker room with him, was at the White House signing ceremony with Trump. Gaines posted on X, "I can't even begin to tell you how vindicating it feels knowing no girl will ever have to experience what my teammates and I did."

Gaines was not alone in taking to social media to celebrate the victory for women. Ex-tennis great Martina Navratilova wrote, "I hate that the democrats totally failed women and girls on this very clear issue of women's sports being for females only."

Navratilova is certainly not a Trump supporter, but like many saw the injustice being done to women and backed the efforts of the president.

Swimmer Paula Scanlan, who also was forced to get dressed with Lia Thomas, called Trump "the saver of women's sports" and added that "It was a wonderful day. My favorite part was seeing so many young girls there, close enough to touch the shoulder

of the president while he was signing the order."

Michele Tafoya, formerly of ESPN went to social media to talk about the iconic picture of President Trump surrounded by all the young athletes and asked, "Hey, Mark Cuban...remember that time you said Trump never stood on the same stage of a bunch of strong, powerful women?"

Clay Travis announced a victory saying that "We won. A total victory" and went on to thank the president "for bringing sanity back to sports."

Coach Tommy Tuberville also

celebrated the victory saying that he was honored to be at the signing and that "We will restore title IX." Former MLB catcher Jonathan Lucroy spoke for all the parents who felt the victory when he wrote, "My daughter is 14 and this makes me very happy. Fair competition."

The sports world rejoiced and it finally felt like we all could speak our minds again because of the new presidency. As a father of an athlete, and proud girl dad, it had shook me to my core the past few years to hear about the injuries, unfair play and embarrassment that was being forced upon the female

athletes as I only cringed at the thought that my daughter would have to suffer the same fate. This new signing, and new direction of the country to protect young women is not just a refreshing "win," but there is no greater feeling as a parent than knowing that your child is safe.

Unlike many politicians before him President Trump has delivered on one of his most important executive orders and like him or not he just made children safer. Like all of the sports personalities above I applaud this and applaud President Trump for delivering this so swiftly into his term.

Trump Bans Males From Competing Against Women and Girls in Sports

Eighty percent of Americans do not want males to play against females in sports. After President Trump took office, he aligned federal policy with common sense and what Americans demanded for girls and women in sports.

Trump said, “My administration will not stand by and watch men beat and batter women,” he said. “It’s going to end and nobody’s gonna be able to do a damn thing about it.”

President Trump signed an executive order entitled "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports" banning males (transgender women) from competing against females in sports.

The order says the United States opposes “male competitive participation in women’s sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity, and truth.”

“The war on women’s sports is over,” he said. “With my action this afternoon, we are putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice that if you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations

Transgender Swimmer Lia Thomas and Riley Gaines

of Title IX and risk your federal funding.”

Males will be banned from female sports on the field of play and in locker rooms. Female athletes will no longer have to endure being watched by men in the locker room or see intact males, or any males at all, changing next to them.

Trump’s order requires the Secretary of Education to prioritize “Title IX enforcement actions against educational institutions that deny female students an

equal opportunity to participate in sports and athletic events by requiring them, in the women’s category, to compete with or against or to appear unclothed before males.”

Before any action by the Secretary could even take place, the NCAA acted saying they “will take necessary steps to align NCAA policy in the coming days, subject to further guidance from the administration.”

One has to believe that the NCAA breathed a sigh of relief.

Credit: X/Twitter

They have been under fire for several years under the BidenHarris administration for allowing males to compete against females taking away awards and opportunities from female athletes and causing serious physical harm to others. It seems likely that the NCAA is happy that the president took the leadership on this issue out of their hands.

Fairness in competition, safety, and the basic truth of biologic reality are the key factors. All of these things are grounded in basic

common sense.

Riley Gaines, NCAA swimmer turned advocate for women and girls in sports after she was forced to share a locker room and compete against male athlete, Lia Thomas:

"To see President Trump’s decisive action today...it was a campaign promise of his, issue number 17 on his platform: No men in women sports," Gaines said. "I can't tell you what that means to me. Three years does not seem like a long time, but I feel vindicated, and I feel this overwhelming feeling of gratitude. Foes of this action make the false claim that this is discriminatory against individuals who claim they are transgender by denying them the opportunity to compete in sports. Transgender people can compete in sports in the sex category they were born with no matter how they may outwardly lead their life outside of the playing field. As long as they compete in the sex category aligned with their biological sex, no one is making any other claims or requirements concerning the lifestyle they may choose.

Donald Trump signs an executive order.

President Trump won both the Electoral College and the popular vote in his return to the White House. New York gave him a big chunk of that, and helping beef up the total was his running mate, Senate Candidate Mike Sapraicone. The South Shore Press caught up with the former New York City police detective and security executive at the annual convention of the New York Conservatives in Albany, where he renewed his commitment to winning back the state from the Democrats after putting up a closer-thanexpected fight against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

South Shore Press: You helped sponsor this year’s Conservative convention. What does that say about your continuing involvement in politics?

Sapriacone: I’m staying engaged and fully support the Republicans and Conservatives, the two parties that backed me for senate. They’ve been making steady progress in turning this state around, and I believe we can do it. In fact, we have to do it. New Yorkers pay the highest taxes and fees in the nation. Our government is infected by a selfserving Progressive ideology that doesn’t do anything good for the people. We need to take our state in

Sapraicone Still on the Scene

an entirely different direction, and I’m proud to support anyone who’s fighting for change.

South Shore Press: You were Donald Trump’s running mate in the only two races that were on the ballot statewide. What was it like being on the ticket with the president?

Sapraicone: It was an incredible experience. The president gave it all he’s got in his home state, holding rallies in Harlem, Manhattan, and here on the Island. He really opened people’s eyes about how better off the state and the country could be with leadership focused on the people instead of politics and selfpreservation.

South Shore Press: It looks like the Conservatives are fired up about taking back the state. Would you say they have momentum?

Sapraicone: Certainly; they got President Trump more than 300,000 votes on his way to winning the popular vote in historic fashion. Their endorsed candidates helped maintain GOP control of the House and ended the Democrat supermajority in the state Senate. Having Conservative support is the difference between winning and losing in many local races, and they work hard to get their candidates over the top. President Trump was second only to Richard Nixon in

receiving the most Conservative votes ever in New York, and that’s really saying something.

South Shore Press: What are some of the Conservative issues you ran on that really resonated with the voters?

Sapraicone: They’re tired of the wasteful spending and having to pay taxes so high that people are leaving the state in record numbers. Government spending and Progressive policies caused the inflation. Our leaders should be doing everything possible to fight inflation, not adding $19 billion more in spending like Gov. Hochul has proposed. We are also dead

set against illegal immigration and support the president’s effort to deport those who broke the law, especially the felons and drug dealers the Democrats readily welcomed into our state. The Conservative view also calls for a realistic energy policy, not forcing us to buy electric vehicles and take away our gas stoves and barbecues. We believe in only two sexes, male and female, and are against men in women's sports and boys in girls’ bathrooms.

South Shore Press: You attended a press conference calling out the Democrats for changing election rules in their favor. Can you tell us more about that?

Trump Derangement Syndrome Extends to Melania

Vogue magazine couldn’t contain its anti-Trump bias in a recent article trashing the First Lady. The catty piece by fashion writer Hannah Jackson had nothing nice to say about Melania Trump’s official portrait, declaring that she “looked more like a freelance magician than a public servant.”

The article stuck out like a sore thumb as a “must read” in a publication that gushes over practically everyone else in the fashion world, including a transwoman who blamed her trouble

getting a passport on Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes.

“The sober black-and-white photograph by Régine Mahaux features Trump, the Washington Monument towering over her shoulder, resting her fingers on a reflective black desk and staring down the camera as if to say, ‘You’re fired.’” Jackson wrote. “Indeed, Trump looked more like she was guest starring on an episode of The Apprentice than assuming the role of first lady of the United States.”

The former model sports a black

Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo jacket with satin-trimmed lapels over a white button-up, which she paired with a Ralph Lauren cummerbund and trousers. The look “certainly didn’t help the boardroom pastiche,” Jackson oozed, adding, “It’s perhaps unsurprising that a woman who lived in a gold-encrusted penthouse, whose fame is so intertwined with a reality-television empire, would refuse to abandon theatrics—even when faced with 248 years of tradition.”

Jackson noted that the photograph is noticeably more toned down than Melania’s 2017 White House portrait, which she also trashed. “Unlike the new blackand-white image, Trump’s first portrait was in color, featuring the first lady—face airbrushed into oblivion—wide-eyed, smiling with a hint of teeth, her arms crossed to display a massive diamond wedding ring.” She busts on Melania’s jewelry choices as well, carping: “This time, while the portrait remains more subdued, the Trumps are displaying wealth not through diamond rings but through the coterie of tech CEOs who sat in the front row at the 2025 inauguration, whose combined net worth was over a trillion dollars.”

The Vogue writer also dredged up some of her feelings about the First Lady’s previous fashion choices, dripping: “In 2018, en route to visit children (some of whom were separated from their parents by the Trump administration)

Sapraicone: The Democrats talk about democracy but do everything they can to take away the power of the people. They tried to remove President Trump from the ballot; they threw Biden under the bus for Kamala Harris even though the president won 14 million votes in the primary; and they rearranged the Appellate Court to get the outcome they wanted for the new Congressional districts. The latest is holding off on special elections, denying the citizens representation, until they can hold Democrat primaries. This guarantees that more Democrats will come out to vote to the great disadvantage of the Republicans and Conservatives.

South Shore Press: What do you think of Gov. Hochul’s reelection chances?

Sapraicone: Right now, it doesn't look good for her. She’s underwater in the polls, and rightfully so. She’s gone so far left that she’s lost many moderate Democrats. Her record on the issues—taxes, illegal immigration, inflation, energy, the economy—is terrible. But the election is not until next year, so there’s a way to go. All l know is that we will keep pushing our message that New York can be much better than it is right now, and our future will be much brighter with a new set of leaders.

held in a migrant detention center in McAllen, Texas, the first lady wore a Zara jacket with the message, ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’ emblazoned on the back.” She also revisited 2016 to trash Mrs. Trump for wearing a pink pussybow blouse to a debate between her husband and Hillary Clinton.

“Now, attempting a no-nonsense businesswoman approach in her situationally inappropriate tuxedo, it seems that Melania Trump still struggles with sartorial messaging,” Jackson chirped from her Brooklyn bunker.

Previously media darlings, the Trumps were relentlessly scorned by the press the moment he announced for president in 2015 and dared to question the status quo. The vitriol rose to such a level that their detractors were described as being afflicted with "Trump Derangement Syndrome." Melania messaging that she doesn’t really care about what they say sent them off on a tizzy that reverberates today now that the pair is back in the White House.

HISTORY LESSONS

A few weeks before the threeyear anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this conflict has not shown any signs that it will quickly end. Even as President Donald J. Trump campaigned stating there is an easy way to end this war, both sides are fiercely fighting each other. Whereas the Ukrainians do not have the same resources as the Russians, Vladimir Putin’s forces are physically and psychologically exhausted from a war that has become a “quagmire” for this embattled power.

This fighting has demonstrated the inability of the Russians to equip, train, and lead their soldiers to achieve a total victory. While Trump promised to mediate a peace between both nations, these claims have proven to be unrealistic. Outnumbered and outgunned, from the start, the Ukrainians have used drones to attack Russian enemy military targets and occupy 620 miles of land in the Kursk region. For the first time since World War II, the Ukraine under its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is the first country to occupy Russian land, as this top secret operation gained this territory, it became a strong bargaining chip toward any future peace agreements.

Watching this war unfold, the casualties are immense through the sheer terror that both sides are waging against each other. Estimates have identified Russian casualties at a staggering 615,000 soldiers with 500,000 wounded and 115,000 killed. Whereas Russia can supply more soldiers than Ukraine, they have lost almost 1,200 soldiers a day. The Russian government has offered enlistment bonuses and incentives and has successfully recruited 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers a month. The aggressive assaults on many fixed positions and the refusal of the Ukrainians to bend has decimated Russian army formations. In the rear, organized army units rarely stay together for long, as they are quickly killed and wounded in battle.

To reenforce its major casualties, Putin has utilized hardened criminals from his jails as additional soldiers for the front lines. For many of the 50,000 prisoners that are serving in uniform, their enlistments do not end until the war is over. Many of these prisoner-veterans who have experienced this frightful war fear that their only way home may be in a coffin. A military survivor of these prisoner platoons observed a 25% survival rate, as only 38 survived out of the 100 that he originally fought with in combat. Putin was confident in his

decision to invade Ukraine, as he never realized that his army would struggle to hold its own lines several years later. Even as Putin “saber rattles” against the Western powers, his military has been decimated and embarrassed by the resistance of the Ukrainians who have widely used Western weapons, armaments, training, and intelligence. Russia repeatedly declares that it will defeat NATO and the United States, but there is a lack of confidence, when some of these are reinforcements are provided with limited training, and they are taken from their prison system. The losses have dictated that Putin must rely on the flawed character of these soldiers to aid his war effort.

This flawed plan granted shortterm fighting contracts, less than the regular Russian army, as these prisoners were allowed to go home after six months of military service. After Russian soldiers complained, the enlistments were lengthened. Through the increased carnage of fighting, these contracts changed their agreements to state that these prisoner-soldiers were unable to end their military commitments to the Russian army until the end of the war. There are grievous losses, as one account has seen one of these soldiers get shot twice, receive poor medical treatment, and he was quickly sent back to the front, where he was killed in battle.

Receiving criticism from the public, Putin has stopped signing pardons for these soldiers that have committed a myriad of criminal offenses. Once the war is over, the platoons of prisoners who have survived are expected to have gained a conditional release from their criminal term. But if they are convicted of a future crime, they will be sent back to prison. The use of prisoners is a huge indicator to show how poorly this war is progressing for Putin that his army leaders must count on the negative caliber of these newly appointed soldiers with checkered pasts. These prisoner-soldiers are rudimentarily trained for eight days before they are dispatched to the front lines. Since January 2023, there are over 8,000 of these soldiers that were killed within the “meat grinder” of operations that signified the horrific warfare between these two European nations. Western estimates feel that these numbers are higher as the Russians are known to distort their true numbers.

Zelensky is still not willing to utilize the draft as at least 60,000 soldiers have been killed with 250,000 wounded. Ukraine

Dwindling Russian Military Resources and the Addition of Unpredictable Reinforcements

has two major problems: First, they are not able to continually sustain these losses against the Russians. Secondly, Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants a settlement and could hold future American military aid against Zelenskyy to accept an agreement that could result in the loss of Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy is surely aware that Trump has called for fiscal responsibility and has ordered the streamlining of the government, and he is not supportive of the long-term continued financing and military support of this war. Before Trump was inaugurated, his government and military representatives have contacted both sides to establish the foundation for establishing peace talks. But the hatred of these two nations, the Russian fears that Ukraine will enter NATO, and uncertainty of the redrawing of territorial lines.

To demonstrate the dire conditions that the Russian military has faced through this war is the deployment of North Korean soldiers to reinforce their depleted lines. This is a unique situation, as the North Korean regime is highly secretive about the state of its military and government, and their harsh economic, social, and political conditions within this unpredictable Asian nation. Since the end of the Korean War in 1953, there have been several times that North Korean forces have sent limited forces to fight outside of its borders. While the North Koreans have guarded the demilitarized zone, they have not been fully engaged in any major conflicts since the Korean War ended in an armistice in 1953.

Before the Vietnam War grew into a major conflict, the North Koreans presented the willingness to help North Vietnam. This long-time Communist leadership regime under the Kim Family wanted to hurt the American

military and civilian targets. Now, American war planners have gained the firsthand knowledge of the skills, weaponry, and morale of the North Koreans from its own soldiers that have been recently taken as prisoners. The North Koreans are still considered one of the fiercest enemies of America and it has deployed an estimated 10,000 soldiers to the Ukrainian front lines. The South Korean Intelligence Agency has intently watched the presence, contributions, and losses of their northern neighbor in Ukraine. Through conflicting reports, there are beliefs that North Korean deaths range from 1,000 to 3,000 soldiers.

military during this war. With over 28,000 American soldiers on or near the Korean demilitarized zone, the North Koreans sent over 200 pilots to oppose American aerial power over North Vietnam. The North Koreans were motivated to hurt the American presence in Southeast Asia and to prolong any chance of victory against the North Vietnamese. During the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli military opposed the Arab alliance of nations that gained the aerial aid of North Korean Mig-21 Squadron to defend the southern territory of Egypt. Seasoned Israeli pilots matched the skill of North Korean pilots near the Suez Canal and the Red Sea through this major Middle Eastern war.

Armed with 1.28 million soldiers, on paper, North Korea has an impressive army that does not have any significant recent combat experience. Since the fall of 2024, it is reported that North Koreans were sent into Russia for limited training, as many of these soldiers did not know why they were sent to this nation. While the Ukrainian's army is thinly stretched, this is a hardened force that is willing to accept losses to prevent the capture of strategic locations. And while they must depend on western military and financial assistance, the Ukrainians are a stubborn army that has made Russia pay dearly for this war. As through the scheme with the prisoners, the infusion of the North Koreas is just another attempt to re-enforce the resources of the Russian military.

The North Koreans present an interesting angle toward this war that allows Western specialists the ability to analyze the combat operations of this nation. For the last three years, there has been Chinese military support, the wide-scale use of Iranian drones, and implementation of powerful Russian missiles that target

For the Ukrainians, they have observed the will of the North Koreans to refuse to be taken prisoner and to fight to the bitter end. Recently, a soldier was captured within the “No Man’s Land” area of the Kursk fighting. It has been in the interests of Zelenskyy’s government and special forces to capture North Korean soldiers to learn more about the fighting makeup, morale, and abilities of this enemy. While this war has been financially and militarily expensive for the United States, it has presented immediate and up-to-date intelligence on the fighting abilities of the Russians and North Koreans and has presented a new light on the usefulness of the weapons that has also been given to them by China and Iran. The taking of North Koreans is another source of valuable information that delves into military capabilities of this long-standing enemy to not only the Ukraine, but the United States.

Many of these enemy soldiers are the “crack” or special forces that infiltrate, sabotage, and assassinate government leaders. Although the North Korean deployment of soldiers has placed more pressures on the Ukrainians, they have killed and wounded these Communist forces and provide detailed reports on the strengths and weaknesses of this secretive country. Putin’s forces continue to feel the strains of this war on their soldiers and resources, as reports have surfaced that Yemenis forces were recently sent to Russia to fight the Ukrainians. Trump has exclaimed that he has the vision to establish a peace between these warring nations, but both of these countries hate each other, they continually take heavy casualties, and in the near future, they will most likely not have a peace concluded to end this war.

The answer is that you should provide a copy of your last will and testament (Will) to anyone you feel comfortable giving it to. No one other than the person who is establishing a Will, otherwise known as the Testator, an attorney draftsperson, and the two subscribing witnesses need to see the document before your death. However, at the very least and to prevent missteps, it is a good idea to notify the Executor you are naming that you have signed a Will and where they can locate the original after your death.

The nominated Executor should be a trustworthy individual, so alerting them to the existence of the Will should not be a matter of concern. Depending on the size of your estate or its complexities, you will want to inform the individual that you are naming them as Executor. Someone you think would be a great Executor, may not be up for the challenge. An Executor has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the beneficiaries

of an estate. Depending on each specific situation, the responsibility could include managing investment accounts, selling someone’s home to minimize carrying costs, and more. You also want to name someone who has a good relationship with your beneficiaries to prevent friction through the estate administration process. An Executor will need to be patient, willing to do the groundwork, and willing to listen to the advice of an attorney, accountant or other necessary professionals.

Beyond those that you decide to provide a copy to, no one is entitled to a copy or the original Will prior to your death. After death, only certain individuals have the legal right to obtain a copy of the Will. If you name someone as a beneficiary in the Will, they have the right to obtain a copy. Your chosen Executor has the right to access and obtain a copy. Lastly, if someone would have inherited from you if there was no Will and the intestacy laws applied, he or she may have the right to obtain a copy.

Once a probate petition is filed with the Surrogate’s Court, the Will becomes a public record and can be accessed by any person. Depending on the County in which the probate petition is filed, the records may be available through an online system

As the green and white confetti was still falling from the sky many sports bettors around the country barely allowed themselves a minute to reflect and enjoy the big game win, they were already looking at 2026.

That is what it is like to be a sports bettor, always have to look ahead and see if there is some value to be uncovered. The 2026 odds to win the Super Bowl are out and are already being bet heavily. For some it's a tradition to jump on some early lines, for others it's purely strategic.

This upcoming year's opening lines have quite a few teams bunched at the top, and while there will be a lot of movement with free agency and the NFL Draft having some big impact on the teams, getting an early number can prove to be a smart bet, if you can anticipate the future.

Standing at the top of the odds board are the Eagles and Chiefs. Both opened up at +650 odds to win the next Super Bowl that will

take place in San Francisco, and both took action right away. The Eagles actually took quite a bit and in some books are down to 6 to 1 odds. Right behind them, and depending on which sports book you're using, right next to those odds are the Ravens, Lions and Bills. All opened up at +700, or 7 to 1 odds, and the Lions and Bills saw some quick money on their futures.

Usually it's not the smartest idea to bet the big favorites this early in the season, because there is no value. If they make some big free agent moves, their odds may decrease slightly, but not enough for interest sake. Going from +700 to +650 doesn't do much.

The next group of teams are in that 'value' area. With a move or two this off season their number can be cut in half. Late Wednesday night coming across the screen or as they were scrolling social media the news every Mets fan wanted to hear came to fruition. Pete Alonso and the New York Mets agreed to a contract.

The Polar Bear is right where he belongs and will be manning first base for the Amazin's this season. Alonso agreed to a 2-year $54 million dollar contract with the Mets. He will make $30 million this season and has an opt out after this season.

A fan favorite Alonso has been the face of the franchise for some time now. Despite the Mets attempts to push Francisco Lindor, there is something about Pete and

the Mets fans that is hard to put a value on. Alonso and his agent tried to leverage that into a massive payday, but Cohen and the Mets balked at the idea all winter long.

Alonso was offered a 7-year, $158 million dollar contract in 2023 and that was based on the belief that he could earn even more than that when he became a free agent this offseason. The strategy used by his agent Scott Boras was not one that Mets owner Steve Cohen appreciated. Boras has been known to rub owners the wrong way and has been on the wrong side of many deals recently.

Early winter talks were that Cohen didn't want Pete back and had his mind set on getting Vlad Guerrero from the Jays, but that never came to pass. Then with

No Time To Rest - The 2026 Super Bowl Odds

season at 25 to 1 odds. Lamar resigned and Harbaugh came back and their opening day future odds were down to 12 to 1.

The San Francisco 49ers are at 14 to 1 odds, and that could be some great value if they can stay healthy, but that of course is a big if. The Bengals sit at 16 to 1 and have gotten quite a bit of action after Joe Burrow's 43 TD passes this season, but their #2 wide receiver Tee Higgins is expected to leave in free agency and his return or departure will impact that line. Washington was everyone's favorite upstart team and they sit at 18 to 1 odds to win it all in 2026, but those odds can shift if they are a major player for a top WR or get a big free agent name. The same can be said for the Packers who are at 19 to 1 odds, and had their own starting running back say they need a dynamic top receiver on their team.

Teams in the +2000, or 20 to 1 range always are intriguing. The Los Angeles duo, the Chargers

and Rams both opened up at about 25 to 1 and both of their odds will move depending on free agency.

The Rams plan to trade Cooper Kupp, who will be his replacement is a major story, and the Chargers need a true #1 receiver, if they get one you can expect these odds to be under +2000. The same can be said for Houston who sit right there at 25 to 1 and their beaten up receiver core is something to watch.

The Vikings had the coach of the year and comeback player of the year but their 30 to 1 odds show that odds makers are unsure that the player will return and they can continue that production. It's a whole other world if an untested rookie is under center rather than Sam Darnold. These odds can drastically move. Denver also sits at 30 to 1 and while they have a great defense, dynamic coach and QB of the future in place, they have a shortage of playmakers on offense. Expect that to change and the Denver might open the season at under +2000. The same can be said

for the Bucs who are just over 30 to 1 and questions are already being asked how Baker will react to losing his offensive coordinator.

The Bears have a new head coach to go along with their #1 draft pick at QB and have an exciting future, their 40 to 1 odds are tempting for Bears backers. Miami is at 50 to 1 and their best offensive star has asked for a trade, this is a market to watch. Atlanta will be starting a new QB and they sit at 60 to 1, as does Seattle.

At +6500 are the Cardinals and Dallas. This is purely a prove it before you move the line situation for both teams. The Jets and Steelers will both have new QBs next year and 80 to 1 odds. Getting into the 100 to 1 area are the teams you expect. Jacksonville will have a new coach and Indy has some nice pieces, but both don't seem like bets to be in the title game, but if you convince yourself hard enough maybe you can throw a few bucks down.

rumors circling that the Blue Jays and Mariners would meet Alonso's asking price, reports came out that Alonso told Boras to stop playing games and that he wanted to be a New York Met. That meant taking a smaller deal, but Alonso is back

where he wanted to be and the fans are excited to have their favorite back in the lineup.

That lineup now looks deadly with Alonso, Lindor and of course newly signed Juan Soto. Social

media exploded at the news of Alonso's signing with Mets fans being ecstatic at the move. Alonso has played 6 years for the Mets and put up 226 home runs, 586 RBIs and 493 runs scored.

Stony Brook Are Kings of the Island

The Stony Brook Seawolves basketball team have had a tough season so far, but they gave their fans a memorable moment that they won't soon forget.

Stony Brook entered play for the battle of Long Island against Hofstra at just 6-19 on the season. They had lost 11 of their last 12 contests and were just 1-10 on the road over their last 11 away from home. They also entered the game against the Pride with sports books setting them as a 13-point underdog, but all that changed Saturday night.

The Wolves played their best game of the year and upended Hofstra on the road 80-75. Andre Snoddy led the scoring by putting in 27 points and not far behind him was CJ Luster with 26. The duo were on fire all afternoon. Snoddy also added 12 rebounds and 2 assists while Luster knocked down five 3-pointers.

O'Connor, Wright and Philip all chipped in with 7 and 8 points

and the team's aggressiveness under the basket was evident from the start. Stony Brook hit 27 free throws to just 12 for the Pride. The Wolves shot 49% from the field as they looked deadly accurate in spurts and that accuracy carried over past the 3-point line where they hit an outstanding 53% from deep.

The Wolves have six regular season games left on their schedule with the next game coming against Monmouth at home on Thursday night, and then on the 27th they have a rematch against Hofstra, this time in Suffolk.

The 25th Anniversary Team Gets Two More Members

The Long Island Ducks have announced two more members to be a part of their 25th Anniversary Team. Former pitcher Bill Simas has been chosen as the 12th member of the team and former outfielder Justin Davies has been chosen as the 13th member.

Simas spent parts of three seasons with the Ducks, and was part of the team for their 2004 Atlantic League championship run. Simas then returned to the Flock in 2009 and

2010. Simas was the definition of a franchise closer and still holds the Ducks record with 48 saves. He also appeared in 133 games, making him a mainstay and a fan favorite and his appearance rank seventh in team history. He ended with a 2.59 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 142.2 innings pitched.

When he was on the mound he set the standard for closers in the Atlantic League. He led the league in saves during the 2004 and 2009 seasons, and in 2009 he tied for the fourth-most saves in a single Ducks

season.

Simas is a six-year MLB veteran with the Chicago White Sox. He was selected to play in the 2009 Atlantic League All-Star Game and after his playing career he stayed with the Flock as the Ducks pitching coach.

Davies knows Long Island well as the West Babylon native was playing in his backyard with the Ducks. He was a member of the original Ducks team in 2000 and spent six seasons with the club. During that time, he set franchise records that still stand today, with 348 walks and 149 stolen bases. He also ranks third in team history in runs scored and triples while sitting fourth in hits and games played. His totals for runs, hits and games played stood as franchise records until broken by Ray Navarrete.

He not only led the Ducks to their first Atlantic League title in 2004, but he was named Championship Series MVP. Davies had the ultimate honor on June 19, 2015, Davies’ #4 jersey became the first jersey number ever to be retired by the Ducks organization.

Mangialino Stands Alone Atop the Record Books

has broken the win record for Comsewogue wrestling.

Mangialino earned win No. 169 this season, beating the old school record. He's been adding to the total since and has more to go at the league and potentially county tournament.

He was on this path very early in his career when experts could envision this record falling. In February 2023, he notched his 97th win and not long after got to the milestone win #100. That season he completed back-to-back league champion status. That is when you could see the sort of career he was already carving out for himself and the school.

Mangialino has earned multiple All-State honors and is now a four-time league champion. This fall he announced where he will be wrestling next season

when he wrote on Instagram, "I’m proud to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career wrestling division 1 at Bloomsburg University. I

would like to thank all my coaches, family, and friends on getting me to this point. Can’t wait for the next chapter!"

record.

The Mustangs ended the season with a perfect 14-0 mark in league play and an impressive 18-2 overall record on the season.

They finished off their year by beating Shoreham-Wading River in a blowout 71-37 this week. That makes six straight wins for this squad and the past two were road victories.

Their defense has been outstanding and it was highlighted by one of their best defensive efforts of the season holding the Wildcats to just 37 points. They have now held eight different teams to 50 points or less

As they enter the playoffs this team is not just a defensive juggernaut. They can score with just about anyone in Suffolk as they have posted 12 games scoring into the 70's and their offense has gotten better as the season has progressed. The Stangs scored 81 and 78 in two of their last five games.

Against Shoreham-Wading River Dominic Pennzello scored 21 points while Brian Vales knocked in 16. Pennzello has scored 17 or more points in each of the last seven games including one 30-point effort and twice had 27 points.

Agostino Keeps the Family Tradition of Winning Going

Mike Agostino has joined some

company.

Agostino earned his 200th career win this past week. Agostino has been coaching at the school for 13 seasons and the school celebrated this huge accomplishment.

Agostino told the district that “It only happens because I have had a bunch of really good players over the years."

He comes from a long line of great coaches. His brother Jack has coached for more than 25 seasons at Amityville. While there he won close to 500 games and is one of only three coaches in New York history to win four consecutive state titles.

His other brother Chris coached more than a decade at Harborfields. He has a state championship under his belt as well.

In March Agostino was also part of some more history when he coached the first ever girls flag football team.

SPORTS Longwood's Senior Night Sends Fans Home Happy

The Longwood Lions held their senior night this week and the Lions senior-laden lineup gave the fans exactly what they wanted as they watched their team on the home floor walk away with a victory.

The Lions beat PatchogueMedford High School by a score of 75-54. The 21-point win made a special night even more special. Players met with their families on the court beforehand and with cheerleaders and fans yelling their names were able to soak up the moment with their parents one last time.

The district said, "A special shoutout and heartfelt thank you to our outstanding senior athletes for their dedication, passion, and hard work over the years. They will be missed, but their achievements and contributions during their last season are unforgettable and will leave a lasting impact on our program and community!

"Congratulations to Imole Akinwale, Shawn Annis, Adam Eljamali, Danye Glenn, Jeremy Lowe, Ryan Mandaro, Brayden Plugues, and Messiah Smith for

Fantasy Baseball - Catching Some Power

Catchers are like tight ends in the fantasy community. You either love them or hate them, and each team's entire draft philosophies rely heavily on your catching approach.

After 30+ years of playing in fantasy leagues I have watched both strategies work to perfection. I have always put a premium on the catching position. I almost always overdrafted the Buster Posey's, Jorge Posada and Joe Mauer's of the world. I am in the camp where having a premiere catcher gives you an edge over the teams with a weak catcher. But, more and more the term position scarcity has gone by the wayside.

The amount of quality catchers has never been greater than right now. William Contreras, Yanier Diaz, Salvador Perez, and Adley Rutschman are all elite backstops. Even players like Cal Raleigh and Will Smith will be taken early in the draft. So where can there be value?

When evaluating a catcher after the top names are off the board you almost have to decide to throw away two categories. Steals are a non-factor with this position, and batting average generally will be brought down by the guys behind the plate. That leaves us in a mode of looking for power, and there are some power bats that can be had later in the draft.

Shea Langeliers is a name that if you put a blind resume out there many people would assume you were talking about a top name like Cal Raleigh. Langeliers is pure power, but with that power also comes some nice counting

stats. Langeliers is Raleigh-lite if you will. Langeliers is entering his prime seasons at just 27 years old. He is moving from the biggest pitchers park in baseball to a more hitter-friendly park in Sacramento, and will be in the middle of a surprisingly good A's lineup. His numbers last year were outstanding for his ADP, and I suspect you can steal him again at cost.

Langeliers just missed the 30 home run mark, falling just short at 29, and his 80 RBIs were a sign that the Oakland lineup wasn't as bad as it seemed. He did hit .224 and his runs scored were low for what his production was, but there are signs that can be built up. A season where he is barely a top 10 catcher on his average draft position, but produces 30+ homers, 90+ RBI and gets into the 70 for runs scored isn't hard to imagine and that is a value play.

Austin Wells is another power bat that could see a nice big leap this year. Wells has long been celebrated for having "the perfect swing for the short porch at Yankee Stadium" and

that beautiful lefty swing certainly had its moments in 2024. Wells was hitting cleanup for a portion of the season and in a lineup with Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, that alone is impressive. Wells now has the full-time job after amassing only 354 at bats last season. He is dynamic behind the plate, which does matter in fantasy because that means he will play more, and the more at bats he gets the more seasoned he will become.

Wells hit 13 home runs over those 350 at bats and with another year under his belt it's not crazy to think he could get to the low 20's for home runs. There is even a case to be made with his slightly above-average exit velo and launch angle, combined with his excellent eye at the plate that he could break out for high 20's in homers. Unlike Langeliers, his counting stats should also be excellent in that Yankee lineup. He had 55 RBIs in just 354 at bats which would be into the 70's last season with a full starters slate of games. That number should come close to 80 this year with the

production bump. His runs scored also will get a jolt because of the lineup he is in. I see an optimistic line of 24 home runs, 80 RBIs, and 70 runs scored. That of course will also come with a low .240's or so batting average, which you can live with for the power output.

The last name on the list is Long Island local Logan O'Hoppe. O'Hoppe is hitting in the middle of an Angels lineup that with a little health could be dangerous this season, but even with all the injuries around him, he still produced very well for a two-catcher league and was a borderline top 10 catcher last season.

O'Hoppe cranked 20 bombs last year with a respectable .244 average. His 56 RBIs with 20 home runs speaks to the poor shape the Angels lineup was in most of the season dealing with injuries. He did however get 64 runs and managed 479 at bats. The Angels will have a healthy Mike Trout to begin the season. They added a power bat in Jorge Soler and overall the offense should be much better than it was last year. O'Hoppe's underlying

The district put out a social media statement saying, "Congratulations to the team and coaching staff, led by Coach Steve Cole, on their remarkable accomplishments."

metrics say he could be much, much better than his stats have shown. His Baseball Savant page reads like a dream. His exit velo, xslugging, xWOBA, hard hit rate, barrel % and sweet spot % are all as red as can be. With a better lineup and some maturation from the 24-yearold the sky is the limit. I'll say he breaks out this season to the tune of 27 homers, .250 avg, with 150 RBIs and runs combined. He should finish inside the top 10 catchers with a chance to be a top 5 steal of the draft.

Getting cheap power from the catcher position later in drafts is a formula that can and has worked. One factor to keep in mind is playing time and how much teams will rest their backstop. Consider this. There have been 40 catcher seasons with 135 games played or more from 2000 to 2010. But, since 2013 there’s only been 10. Teams are resting catchers more and going with almost a two-headed approach. So when you are drafting look not only for production but playing time, because as an old coach used to say the best ability is availability.

No Time To Rest...

The Panthers and Patriots have their QB of the future in place, but this isn't about the distant future as both are +12500 to win it all next season. 150 to 1 sees the bottom rung teams in the Browns, Raiders, and Saints. There are so many moving parts with these teams that Vegas doesn't have a QB and the Saints

as of the day of the big game didn't have a head coach.

And then there is the longest of long shots. The Titans and Giants are 200 to 1 to win it all next season and both have been tied to a new signal caller. This speaks to more of a franchise issue, but also has a lot to do with how little faith odds makers have in their next potential QB.

SPORTS Long Island Gets a New Team

When the general manager for the new football team coming to Long Island says he wants this to be a "Long Island" team that is not just a talking point.

Peter Schwartz, who was named the new GM for the Long Island franchise in the Entertainment Football Association, expressed over and over how much of the Island will be represented on this team and speaking with him you could not be more impressed by his vision.

Schwartz is as knowledgeable as anyone I have spoken to about these different football leagues. Schwartz is best known for his work at WFAN and as a radio personality, but his passion comes through as I spoke to him about football. He expressed that he is "Excited and nervous at the same time, really it's simplistic to say (being named the GM) is a dream come true, but that is what it is for me. I reached a point that I thought this could never be possible and now I get to begin from the start, and with something brand new."

Schwartz is certainly not new

to the arena football world. In fact, it's not a leap to say that he is synonymous with arena football. He was the radio announcer for the Dragons from 2001-2008. After that eight-year run the arena league shut down in 2008. Even though they picked the league back up, the Dragons were not one of the returning teams. He stayed close with the league though doing some TV work after that, and worked part time in the front office, as well as working on the website and wrote articles for the program.

He was a jack-of-all-trades, which makes him a great candidate to now run the new team. Schwartz was hired as youth football liaison, he worked on group tickets and in 2019 worked for another football league called the National Arena League, who had a team in Westchester County.

Then last year the original Arena Football League came back and hired him to get ready for the press conference about their Arena Bowl Game. He was a consultant and public address announcer for the Arena Bowl, which was held in the American Dream Mall in New Jersey. They took the ice

Brothers Bowl to a Title

Eastport-South Manor Jr.-

Sr. High School bowlers Logan Silbert and Alex Silbert took home the crown in the Section Xl High School Doubles Championship this past weekend.

The brothers are both accomplished singles competitors and now have come together to form an unstoppable duo. Having joined the team in eighth grade, the brothers have spent years perfecting their game and their teamwork shows every time they step out there.

Their complementary strengths were on full display throughout the tournament. Logan’s game is based around precision and Alex’s is a consistency-based approach. Both work hand in hand and has led them to this point.

skating rink inside the mall and transformed it into the football field.

When Schwartz heard about a new team coming to Long Island he was caught off guard. A friend from the AFL told him about the plans and he soon became a part of the press conference. He brought interested fans to the event and packed the place with enthusiastic Long Islanders. Five minutes after the press conference it was obvious that he was the man for the job and he was asked to become the GM.

Schwartz's job is not an easy one. He has to get Long Islanders excited about something brandnew. This is a place where there are plenty of sports and entertainment options, but from the looks of their vision, Long Islanders will flock to see the product they are putting

out. This isn't just a football game but a full fan experience Schwartz explained to me. The event will be a whole-day experience. Your day begins with an organized tailgate party outside the Coliseum. Then it's inside to watch the game, but it doesn't end there. After each game there will be an opportunity to get autographs and pictures on the field with the players and dancers. Then after the game they will put on a full 30-45 minute concert.

The concert will be a Long Island-based musical act. Just like the rest of the franchise. The most impressive thing that Schwartz told me is that everything he does will be Long Island-based. He will be hiring a new head coach in the new few weeks. The candidates are all former high school or college coaches from Long Island. That

Mount Sinai = Perfection

head coach will then select each player on the team. But again, Schwartz reiterated that the coach will pick the players, but every single member of the roster will be from Long Island.

This will be Long Island's team. He said the local feel will energize the community to come see their hometown hero's play, and electrify those towns to come see the product they are putting on the field. The team will be out in the community, doing clinics with the PAL league, going to local festivals and parades, and want to be seen and attached to the community.

They have already begun to sell tickets despite the name and logo being weeks away from being selected. They have secured a corporate partner in the Embassy Diner in Bethpage and are looking for more.

Schwartz also told me that there will be open tryouts for those who want to be a part of the team. If you are a Long Island high school graduate that wants to continue your playing career, you can be a part of a true Long Island team. Just go to www.goentfla.com and send an email for when open tryouts will take place.

Long Island has a new team and this is looking like it will be the most local-focused team the area has ever had.

Their victory not only solidified their reputation as rising stars in the high school bowling scene but also showcased the powerful synergy between the two brothers. Logan has had a remarkable year and just last week he was absolutely perfect. Logan was able to bowl a perfect game score of 300.

With each strike, his focus and precision were undeniable, demonstrating his skill and mastery of the sport. It was electric and has been described as such by onlookers as Logan delivered one perfect shot after another, and the crowd was eating up the outstanding performance.

There is a bright future ahead and many more great moments for the brothers, but this championship was special for the duo.

perfect. They ended their season undefeated by beating Kings Park in their last game this week 65-58. The victory clinched the Section XI, League 6 Championship with an unblemished 13-0 record.

Leading the scoring in the season clincher was Collin Bruder who paced the team with an impressive 24 points. Evan Schmit poured in 13 and Gavin Hertz's 11 points gave the team three double-digit scorers.

Ethan Arita chipped in 7 points while Craig Hall and Kyle Larruso had 4 points a piece and Dan Pesce added a bucket in the winning effort.
