NEW SMITH POINT BRIDGE WILL REPLACE AGING BRIDGE

Groundbreaking on the new Smith Point Bridge in Shirley is expected to begin in 2024. A community informational meeting was held at William Floyd High School to apprise residents about the $111 million Smith Point Bridge Replacement Project.
The current Smith Point Bridge made its official debut on July 4th, 1959, and has been providing direct access from Long Island to Fire Island's Smith Point County Park. Before the 1,216 foot bridge was built, residents and visitors bound for Smith Point traveled via ferry. But the steel-deck drawbridge, which is constructed of reinforced concrete and roadway laid on a steel beam infrastructure is aging where pilings are eroding. There has been increased difficulty for officials to replace electrical equipment for the center of the drawbridge section.
Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella, in whose District the project is located, noted the necessity for the current bridge to be replaced with a new structure. "The current bridge is 62 years old. It is starting to show signs of its age and requires yearly maintenance. In essence," Mazzarella continued, "the
bridge is coming to the end of its useful life."
From a fiscal standpoint, the new bridge will cost $111 million. Mazzarella explained that Suffolk County will bond 20% from within the municipality's capital program, and the remaining 80% of the project's cost will be federally funded. Mazzarella explained, "This funding has been allocated, and will bring jobs to our area." Mazzarella pointed out that "Our beautiful waterfront community will have access to Fire Island for years to come."
Construction on the new replacement bridge is scheduled to begin next year and has a two-year projected timeline for completion. The replacement bridge will be built 125 feet to the west of the existing bridge. The current bridge will remain in use throughout the construction period of the replacement bridge. According to Mazzarella, the Smith Point Bridge Replacement Project has undergone the SEQRA process.
The new bridge will be built with wider shoulders and offer amenities that include a pedestrian-oriented multi use path that will be insulated by a barrier from vehicular traffic. Additionally, the new bridge will

not be a drawbridge. Instead, it will be constructed with a 55 foot high vertical clearance that will allow nautical traffic to navigate freely without interrupting the flow of vehicular traffic on the bridge.
The bridge will also include in its multiuse path, a belvedere, or an observation platform, for pedestrians to enjoy the bay's vistas, well as a place to showcase references to the historical significance of the community. The new design will also provide a fishing pier on the south side of the Narrow Bay which juts approximately 300 feet into the bay.
The new bridge will make landfall on the South in the area of South Point Park, which is presently occupied by
a recreation area. A new and improved recreation area will provide easier access than the current one, and will also include a fishing pier and walking paths.
Summing up the project, Mazzarella stated, "This project is so much more than access to Fire Island with its added features of a shared use path and a fishing pier; the bridge now becomes recreational. The law pedestrian/ bicycle path becomes a place to exercise, or just take a leisurely stroll." Mazzarella added that the pier will be an added benefit for those who enjoy fishing or for others to "enjoy the scenic landscape."
The Smith Point Bridge was named as a nod to William 'Tangier' Smith, governor of Tangier on the coast of Morocco who, in the 17th Century, settled in New York. Through land grants and acquisitions, Colonel Smith acquired the extensive stretch of land known as the Manor of St. George (50 miles of waterfront along the Atlantic Coast). When the New York Supreme Court of Judicature was established by the Colonial Assembly in 1691, Smith was appointed a Justice of the Court and subsequently Chief Justice, a position he held from 1692 until 1701.
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (D-Sag Harbor) issued the following statement after being reappointed as a member of the Assembly Rules; Environmental Conservation; Oversight, Analysis & Investigation; and Transportation Committees. Thiele also chairs the Assembly Local Governments Committee.
Assemblyman Thiele said, “I am very honored to continue serving the people of the East End of Long Island on these prominent committees. These positions give me the opportunity
to promote legislation on a wide range of policy issues, including protecting our water quality, investing in public transportation and infrastructure, fostering sustainable economic development, and supporting our local governments. Each committee I have been assigned to helps me have an even greater impact on behalf of the people of the 1st Assembly District and I look forward to working with my constituents and colleagues to address these pressing issues during the 2023 Legislative Session.”
The Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School sports program ended the year with a myriad of accolades. There were 502 student-athletes who participated in fall sports. Here is a list of notable individual accomplishments.

The William Floyd High School girls’ basketball program has dedicated time off the court to help in the fight against cancer! Student-athletes from both the varsity and junior varsity teams recently came together to help raise over $1200 in the “Score for a Cure/Coaches Versus Cancer” fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The student-athletes hosted a bake sale, sold t-shirts and held a team “shoot-a-thon” to collect donations from family and friends to help raise money, according to Rich Sinclair, head coach, girls’ varsity basketball.
“I would like to thank the players, their families and friends for their help and generosity with fundraising for the American Cancer Society,” said Coach
Sinclair.
As for on the court, the girls’ varsity team is having a great season! The Colonials own a 7-1 league record (8-4 overall), and currently are in second place in Division II! After reaching the playoffs in 2022 for the first time since 2013, William Floyd is wellpositioned for another playoff appearance later this season.
Additionally, junior guard Kayla Gilmore, recently broke the school record for most points scored in a game with 51, in a 6634 victory over Riverhead over the winter break. She surpassed the previous girls’ record held by Maggie Makofsky (42 points in 2000) and the boys’ record held by Robert Hodgson (47 points in 1994). Kayla gave the credit to her teammates.

As part of its role as a New York State Civic Readiness Pilot School, Bellport High School hosted its second Civics Day on Jan. 13. The informative and engaging event was part of a project known as Generation Citizen that teaches students how to advocate for civic change. All government class students at Bellport High School completed the project.
During the event, held in the school’s library, Generation Citizen students presented projects they have been working on that involved researching an issue in their community, devising
a solution to the issue and then asking community stakeholders to implement a solution. Projects addressed topics such as creating an ambassador program for special education students at the high school, providing student mental health days, introducing students to language before seventh grade and establishing later start times for the school day.
Additionally, students heard from keynote speaker State Senator Dean Murray, who spoke about his career and the importance of being involved in one’s community.
The Bellport Middle School History Club, advised by Romelo Green, recently enjoyed a field trip to the BellportBrookhaven Historical Society.
During the trip, students participated in a tour by Historical Society Director Tricia Foley, who showcased the PostCrowell House, taught its history and discussed the families who owned it dating back to the late 18th century. She also
described the house's architecture, tea and shipbuilding history. The students were able to tour the blacksmith shop and the barn museum, which contained many historical artifacts.
“I found this was a rewarding experience for our History Club members, as it allowed them to research and learn more about our local history in a practical way," said Green.

“We have more people than hymnals!” said Rev. Kimberly Quinn Johnson of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork at the start of a Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Worship Service held last week.
The people in attendance were highly diverse: older and younger, African Americans and whites and Shinnecock Indians.
“It is good to be together and learn more about each other,” said Rev. Johnson. And they learned, too, more about Dr. King. Clergy who spoke also were highly diverse.
Rev. Nancy Remkus of Old Whaler’s Church in Sag Harbor spoke about the book “Martin’s Big Words.” King, she said, “one of the most influential speakers of all time, used words to fight for human rights.” As she talked, she showed pages of the large picture book featuring King’s words and a narrative by Doreen Rappaport. In the book’s opening pages was a typical sign that King encountered as a youngster growing up in the segregationist south: “White Only.” But, the book went on, his mother told him: “You are as good as anyone.”
The book continued: “Martin
said love when others said hate. He said together when others said separate. He said peace when others said war…He said sooner or later we will have to learn to live together.”
It told of the civil rights activists who were committed to nonviolence and “were jailed and beaten and murdered but they continued to march.”
“Love is the key to the problems of the world,” were among King’s words displayed in the book. Said Rev. Remkus: “His big words are alive with us today.”
Dr. King was “the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize,” she noted. He was shot to death in 1968 at only 39 years old.
She was followed by singing and drumming by The Thunderbird Sisters from the Shinnecock Indian Nation.
Then Sensei Michel Engu Dobbs of Ocean Zendo, a Buddhist center, gave a presentation. He said King “would have had his 94th birthday today—and it should have been his 94th birthday today.” He quoted from King’s speeches and King’s emphasis on how “we are all connected.”
Rabbi Dan Geffen of Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor also
quoted Dr. King’s words and read a portion of the speech King gave the night before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. “Well, I don’t know what will happen now; we’ve got some difficult days ahead,” said King. “But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life—longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised
Land. And so I’m happy tonight; I’m not worried about anything; I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
Rabbi Geffen’s eyes filled with tears as he uttered King’s words.
Rev. George Dietrich of Hamptons Lutheran Parish read from Dr. King’s letter from a Birmingham jail in which he was locked up for participating in a demonstration against racism in that Alabama city. In it, Dietrich related, King wrote: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Rev. Adrian J. Pratt of the
Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church, with a guitar, sang a composition he wrote which has the chorus: “Every step that we take, away from hate, is one more step in the direction of peace/ Every step that we take, away from hate, is one more step towards being free.”
Musician Steven Skoldberg of Southampton, also with guitar, sang the “MLK Song” by Mavis Staples. Its last stanza: “In the crawl for justice, I helped somebody run/ In the walk for the hungry, I fed someone/And in the march for peace, tell them I played the drum/ When I have to meet my day.”
A collection basket was passed for contributions to the new Southampton African-American Museum.
The service closed with all those there, standing arm-in-arm, singing “We Shall Overcome,” the anthem of the civil rights movement.
Rev. Johnson then declared: “We leave with hope…We leave with commitment.”
The printed program for the service was topped by a quote of Dr. King: “Change does not roll in on wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”
For some time now we have been living under a form of government where we are told what kind of car to drive, what type of lightbulb to use, and how much water to flush down our toilets. Within the past few weeks a new directive has emerged. We are now being instructed on how to cook our food.
Governor Hochul quietly snuck a proposal to outlaw new gas stoves into a green energy plan she unveiled in during her State of the State address on January 10th. So, now we have been ordered to stop using gas grills and go completely electric.
The ban would severely impact millennials and seniors who have been conditioned to use iron pans which don’t really work that great on electric burners. The Governor’s plan would outlaw gas tops, oil furnaces, and hot water heaters in commercial construction and new homes by 2030. What we are looking at here is a stroke
of genius that would absolutely stymie the restaurant industry. On the bright side, the woke movement will be assuaged. The truth is it is impossible in a restaurant setting to cook efficiently using electric burners.
Besides banning the sale of gas stoves, Hochul’s plan requires all new construction to be at zero-emission beginning in 2025 for smaller buildings and 2028 for larger ones. Hochul’s office confirmed that the plan applies to commercial, residential, and mixed-use building with no exceptions. The statement issued read, “Governor Hochul has been clear that we have to take bold steps on climate to protect the health and safety of our children, and 30% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings.”
The Governor’s office emphasized that the plan only applies to new construction and went on to explain that the plan does not pertain to
Congressional District covering Queens and the Bronx weighed in on the controversial subject. “Did you know that ongoing exposure to NO2 from gas stoves is linked to reduced cognitive performance? Which, I suppose, indicates that chefs are all suffering from low IQs and diminished cognitive ability." (Hmmm….).
existing gas stoves in buildings like restaurants and would mark the beginning of a process to determine appropriate regulations to best protect our planet, our economy, and our health. (Ho hum).
The Executive Director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, which represents some 25,000 eating and drinking establishments, lambasted the Governor’s plan.
“Putting aside whether or not chefs prefer cooking with gas or not, the cost to open up a new restaurant would skyrocket if someone had to convert existing gas equipment into electric, which could be further complicated by whether or not the building had an adequate electrical load.”
The very astute and erudite Democratic Representative from New York’s 14th
It should be noted that all TV chefs, people like Gordon Ramsey, Guy Fieri, Giada de Laurentiis, Rachel Ray, Jamie Oliver, Emeril Lagasse, Paula Deen, et al, cook on gas and that they all appear to be pretty sharp.
It’s my opinion that people who cook know the difference between gas and electric cuisine and many who advocate electric cooking do a lot of eating out and may be frequent patrons of Taco Bell and Wendy’s.

The Giants were eliminated this past weekend in an embarrassing performance against the hated Eagles, and the fear now is that one loss will overshadow all the good that this season produced. The Giants had a truly great season, don't let one game make anyone forget that.
Big Blue is ahead of schedule and when you are ahead of your success schedule there will be disappointing exits. The reality though is the Giants should not have even been in that spot. New York came into the playoffs as the least talented playoff team in the field and the team with the preseason longest odds in the NFC playoff teams. What they did have though was an outstanding new head
coach, a dynamic running back and a big one year jump from their quarterback. Now the questions begin for the G-Men. Will Barkley be back? What about Jones? And most urgently, who can they add to the mix to compete with the rest of not only the NFC but their own division, which had 3 playoff teams playing last weekend.
The Giants exit shouldn't cloud the great strides this team made last season, but that blowout loss also should be a wake up call to this franchise that they need to bring in more talent. The off season will be all about Jones and Barkley, but let's not overlook this defense was destroyed, offensive line looked bad at times and the
receiving game was one of the worst in the league.
The Giants were ahead
of schedule this season, but next year there will be expectations. The bar has been set, now it's time for
Daboll and company to make the decisions to exceed that bar.

What do I do with the proceeds from the sale of a property in a Medicaid Asset Protection Trust?
When residential property is owned by a trust, the trustee may sell the property if the terms of the trust permit it. The trust would be the seller of the property and the trustee must sign the listing agreement, contract of sale and closing documents. Upon closing, the net proceeds from the sale are payable to the trust and the trustee handles opening a trust bank account if one does not already exist. The trustee would then deposit the net proceeds into the trust bank account.
Many people transfer their homes to an irrevocable trust to protect the asset for purposes of qualifying for Medicaid long term care. Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts typically provide that the creator of the trust (the Grantor) receives
income from the trust, but not principal. Also, Grantors reserve the right live in any residential property owned by the trust during their lifetime. After the death of the Grantor, the assets either continue for the life of a spouse or pass to the trust beneficiaries.
If a home owned by a Medicaid Asset Protection Trust is sold, the Grantor is not entitled to the proceeds from the sale. But, if the Trustee invests the proceeds from the sale, the Grantor could collect any interest or dividends generated. A Trustee cannot deposit the sales proceeds in any other type of account –to maintain protection the proceeds must be deposited in the name of the irrevocable trust. A Trustee of such a trust can purchase a new residence for the Grantor, which the Grantor has the same right to reside in
for their lifetime.
Note that if the terms of the trust are violated, any assets inside the trust are no longer protected for Medicaid purposes. For most people their home is
the most significant asset in their Medicaid trust. Thus, it is very important to consult an experienced elder law attorney whenever selling or spending trust principal.
At the Grantor's death, the Trustee must distribute the assets held in trust according to the trust beneficiaries. It is advisable for the trustee to account to the trust beneficiaries and have them sign a receipt, release and refunding agreement before making any distributions of the trust funds. This releases the Trustee from any liability for their actions as trustee. A Trustee should seek out an experienced trust attorney to help prepare the necessary documentation.
