the top count. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Tara O’Donnell of the Major Crime Bureau, with investigative assistance from Detectives Michael Langella and Erik Pedersen of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Seventh Squad.

Salvadoran Man Faces Justice After 20 Years on the Lam Derrick Clancy

By Robert Chartuk Residents can rest a little easier after the arrest of a homeless man for allegedly breaking into the homes of two Mastic Beach women and sexually assaulting them. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced that Derrick Clancy, 42, was indicted for the attacks and faces life in prison.

“This defendant’s alleged unconscionable behavior of breaking into the homes of two elderly women and sexually assaulting them is abhorrent,” Tierney said. “My office is committed to protecting our senior population here in Suffolk County from those who would seek to take advantage of or harm them.”

According to Tierney, during the early morning hours of October 10, the first victim, a woman over 70 years old, was alone inside her Mastic Beach home when she heard a noise.

Clancy allegedly broke into the woman’s home by cutting a hole in a window screen. He allegedly physically and sexually assaulted the victim while repeatedly claiming he had a knife. Following the assault, the victim pressed her medical alert system button for help, and Clancy allegedly fled the

home through the same window through which he had broken in.

The victim was treated at a local hospital for her injuries.

The second attack occurred during the early morning hours of October 17, when a woman over 70 years old heard a noise coming from a closet inside her home. When the victim opened the door, she allegedly saw Clancy coming into her home through a window in the closet, Tierney reported. Clancy allegedly physically and sexually assaulted the victim and then fled. She immediately called 911 and was treated at a local hospital for her injuries.

Following an investigation by the Suffolk Police Department and its detectives, the U.S. Marshals Service’s New York/ New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, District Attorney Investigators, and investigators with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Clancy was arrested. The mask and knife that he allegedly used during the first attack were recovered. He was arraigned by County Court Judge Karen M. Wilutis on the following charges: Two counts of Burglary in the First Degree, Class B violent felonies.

By Robert Chartuk Never giving up on the case, investigators with the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office have returned a Salvadoran man to the United States to face justice after being charged with raping his stepdaughter 20 years ago.

According to DA Raymond Tierney, the 47-year-old defendant fled the country in 2003 after being charged with repeated sexual assaults against the 14-yearold girl.

“Thanks to our partnerships with law enforcement agencies here and around the world, our message is clear to those who would prey upon children. There is no safe place for you to hide,” Tierney said. “No matter how long it takes, we will do everything in our power to find you and bring you back to Suffolk County to be held accountable for your actions.”

According to Tierney, the defendant had locked his stepdaughter in a room and forcibly raped her while her mother was at work. He threatened to kill the victim or her mother if she told anyone what he had done.

He continued to rape and sexually abuse her for more than a year until the victim told her friend about the abuse and had the presence of mind to record a conversation between herself and the defendant in which he admitted to having intercourse and taking her for an abortion after she became

pregnant. The victim’s friend gave the recording to her mother, who shared it with the victim’s mother. Upon learning about the abuse of her daughter, the mother confronted the defendant, and he fled from the United States before the police were notified and able to apprehend him.

In 2021, the district attorney’s office was made aware that the defendant may be living in El Salvador. Following an investigation, the District Attorney’s Office began extradition proceedings to return him to Suffolk County with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service and Suffolk County Police Department detectives. He was arraigned by County Court Judge Karen M. Wilutis, who ordered the defendant remanded during the pendency of the case.

The District Attorney’s Office is

not naming the defendant in order to protect the identity of the sexual assault victim. He was charged with: Four counts of Rape in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony.

One count of Sodomy in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony.

Four counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, a Class D violent felony.

One count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A misdemeanor.

This case is being prosecuted

by Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau, with investigative assistance from the United States Marshals Service and Detective Alex Beyrer of the Suffolk County Police Department.

By Robert Chartuk Beating back a multimillion dollar challenge and a decidedly negative campaign by his opponent, Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine emerged victorious in his bid for county executive.

In early, unofficial Board of Elections results, the Republicans also held on to the county legislature’s majority, and Councilman Daniel Panico won Romaine’s seat on the Brookhaven Town Board.

Incumbents Town Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro and Receiver of Taxes Louis Marcoccia held their seats, while the Republicans retained their majority on the town council.

Republicans were looking to add to their majority in the county legislature by picking up the seat formerly held by Democrat Al Krupski, who ran for Southold Town supervisor.

The race pitted Republican Catherine Stark against Democrat Catherine Kent.

Other races too close to call on election night were the northwestern Brookhaven legislative seat vacated by Democrat Kara Hahn, hotly contested by Republican Anthony Figliola against former assemblyman and county legislator Steve Englebright. Also up for grabs was Legislator Sarah Anker’s northeastern Brookhaven seat, which pitted Republican Chad Lennon against Anker’s chief of staff, Democrat Dorothy Cavalier. Unofficial results show Lennon winning.

Republican Dominick Thorne also fended off a challenge to hold onto his seat, which he won in a stunning victory two years ago against the legislature’s presiding officer.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Steps Down Raymond Tierney reinvigorated a task force that included Harrision.

The commissioner drew a letter of rebuke from Tierney after appearing at a press conference with attorney John Ray, who represents some of the Gilgo victim families, announcing new evidence in the case.

By Robert Chartuk On the eve of an election that will bring in a new county executive who can name a new chief of the Suffolk Police Department, Commissioner Rodney Harrison announced his resignation.

The former chief of department for the New York City Police, Harrison was an appointment of Democrat Steve Bellone, who cannot run for reelection due to the county’s term limit law.

Succeeding Bellone is Republican Edward Romaine, the Brookhaven supervisor, who said he will seek a new commissioner once he assumes office in January. His nominee will have to be approved by the county legislature, which has maintained its GOP majority in an election where crime was a major issue.

The Bellone administration made assurances that the Gilgo murder investigation would not be impacted by the loss of the police commissioner. A suspect in the case, Massapequa Park architect Rex Heurmann, was arrested after District Attorney

Suffolk’s former top cop began his career with the NYPD as a cadet in 1991. He rose through the ranks and was named the first black Chief of Detectives in the department’s 175-year history.

He hasn’t given any indication of his future plans. Deputy Police Commissioner Risco MentionLewis and Chief of Department Robert Waring are expected to run the Suffolk department during the transition. The police commissioner earns $235,502 per year.

Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School’s National Honor Society inducted 92 new members during a traditional candlelight ceremony, held in the auditorium on Oct. 12.

Of course, both offices joined in the fun and picked costume themes, Disney Villains and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” to get things started. “It is all about the kids and what better way to demonstrate a fun and safe activity than to have the adults get in on the fun as well,” said NYS Senator Dean Murray.

Comptroller Kennedy Claws Back $2.8 Million

By Robert Chartuk Audits of a former management company handling pharmacy benefits for county employees have netted Suffolk taxpayers $2.8 million.

The audit division of Suffolk Comptroller John M. Kennedy’s office clawed back the money from WelldyneRX, Inc. after they revealed that the company did not achieve contracted terms and found substantial shortfalls in rebates, pricing, discounts, and fees due to the county.

“Medical benefit costs are a major portion of the county’s budget, and it is my obligation to ferret out fraud, waste, and abuse to preserve these benefits for the employees of Suffolk County and to ensure that taxpayer funds are not misspent,” Kennedy said. “These audits underscore the need for fiscal management and vendor oversight through audit, especially during a time of record inflation, high taxes, and ever-rising medical expenses.

The county ended its administrative service agreement with WelldyneRX, Inc. in 2021 after seven and a half years of administering the pharmacy benefit

portion of its self-insured medical plan, according to the comptroller.

Last year, the county contracted with Express Scripts, Inc. to administer its pharmacy benefit.

Kennedy’s office, in conjunction with the Plan’s Labor Management Committee, engaged the Segal Group to perform five financial and benefit design audits of Welldyne, revealing issues that led to the company agreeing to refund the $2.8 million back to the county. A prior audit of Welldyne $2.6 million in misspent taxpayer funds. Overall, the comptroller’s audits have yielded over $7 million in recovered funds and recommendations that have resulted in cost-saving measures.

The County’s self-insured employee medical plan covers over 45,000 active employees, spouses, dependent children, dependent survivors, and retirees making it one of the largest medical plans in Suffolk County. The plan has an average yearly spend of over $550 million, which is offset by employee contributions, Kennedy noted.

Since taking office in 2016, his Audit Division has been aggressively auditing each of the vendors that provide benefit services to the plan (major medical/hospital, pharmacy,

Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr. and behavioral health) to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and industry best practices.

Those under the plan when it was managed by WelldyneRX complained of slow service in getting prescriptions filled and bad customer service. “Express Scripts does a better job,” the employee said.

In other good news for the taxpayers, the administration of Gov. Kathy Hochul gave up on an effort to raise the tax New York extracts from pharmacy benefit managers such as Express Scripts.

They were looking to raise the state “dispensing fee” to $10.18, up from the current $2-$3 per prescription.

“When

millions of prescriptions that New Yorkers fill each year, the additional expense for the health system as a whole would have reached into the billions – and ultimately add to what are already some of the highest insurance premiums in the United States,” said Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano, an opponent of the dispensing fee. “We’re glad they gave up on that.”

Eastport’s Charles Wohr Leads Annual Veterans Parade

By Robert Chartuk The Fifth Annual Veterans Day Parade, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the Moriches, marched down Main Street in East Moriches on Sunday with a huge crowd welcoming the participants, including the Center Moriches High School Band, local fire departments, scouts, and elected officials from throughout the area.

Leading the parade to the Soldiers and Sailors Park was Grand Marshal Charles Wohr, who was nominated for the role by American Legion Post 1545. The honoree joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating from Farmingdale High School in 1948 and trained as an aircraft and engine mechanic. He served in Libya and flew missions in support of nuclear weapons testing on the Bikini Island Atoll, as well as missions to South Korea during the war. The East Moriches veteran worked in various defense industry positions and, upon retirement, became a volunteer driver with the Disabled American Veterans.

Also marching in the parade were Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine, Councilman Daniel Panico, state Senator Dean Murray, Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, Legislator James Mazzarella, and council candidate Karen Dunne Kesnig.

Fiscal Red Flags in Mid-Year Budget Report an entire budget that funds education, health care, child care, and other services that New Yorkers want to make sure are not cut.”

By Robert Chartuk Declining income tax payments, coupled with “historic” Medicaid spending and money for illegal immigrants, has put New York in a fiscal bind, according to a mid-year report from the state’s Division of the Budget. The assessment comes as the state sets spending records with budgets increasing by over $20 billion since Democrat Kathy Hochul has been governor.

After the state received a massive influx of federal COVID relief monies, New York enjoyed a $8.7 billion surplus. “According to today’s mid-year report, we now face a $4.3 billion deficit next year.

Something has to change,” said a statement from the Republicans in the state assembly. “New York Democrats’ pattern of runaway spending cannot continue.”

According to the Division of Budget, tax receipts have come up $800 million short against expectations from the last quarter.

The state is facing budget gaps of $9.1 billion in 2025 and $13.4 billion the following year. Tax receipts are forecast to drop $9.6 billion (8.5 percent) next year as residents grapple with inflation, high fuel prices, and economybusting policies out of Albany and

“We are at capacity,” Hochul said. “I just want to make sure that we're managing expectations.

“The numbers show what we have been saying for the last few years–the Democrats are spending us into oblivion, and it’s getting worse,” said Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano, who points out that state spending has skyrocketed $60 billion in the last five years. “They burned through the COVID money and are now looking at huge deficits. We’ll keep up the pressure to bring spending down and, hopefully, convince fewer people to flee our state.”

Senate Delegation Takes Aim at Saltwater Fishing License

By Robert Chartuk Staring down a state mandate that has local anglers clutching their creels, state Senate Republicans have announced their opposition to a plan by Gov. Kathy Hochul to impose a new saltwater fishing license, a move seen as another money drain from Long Island.

"Long Islanders, like all New York residents, are feeling the crunch when it comes to inflation and simply can't afford another money grab by the state,” retorted Senator Dean Murray, who is leading the opposition.

“We urge the governors to join us in listening to our constituents when they say ‘NO’ to another money grab and ‘NO’ to a tax on saltwater fishing."

The state trolled residents with the unpopular tax once before and retreated after massive public opposition. With former Democrat Senator Brian Foley casting the deciding vote, a fee was imposed in 2009 targeting Long Island, which has the bulk of the state’s saltwater anglers.

Foley was ousted after one term, partly because of the tax and for

caving to New York politicians by imposing a payroll tax to funnel money to the MTA. This time, Long Island’s GOP delegation is keeping the lines of communication taut with the governor in a letter signed by seven senators, including Murray, Patricia CanzoneriFitzpatrick, Jack Martins, Anthony H. Palumbo, Mario R. Mattera, Steven Rhoads, and Alexis Weik.

“We implore you to put a stop to the effort by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to once again impose a requirement on saltwater anglers to pay for a license to fish in state marine waters,” the senators wrote.

“Long Islanders feel that saltwater fishing is their natural right, and they shouldn't have to pay a fee to do it. We live on an island, and fishing is a favorite pastime shared by many families.”

Currently, those 16 or older fishing in freshwater are required to pay a state license fee, with the money supposedly going to conservation and

restocking efforts.

“When the saltwater fee was imposed in 2009, the state was facing a huge financial deficit, and raising fees was a way to increase revenue,” Murray pointed out. “It looks like this new proposal is just taking a page from that same old playbook as the state is, once again, facing a multibillion-dollar deficit.”

“Long Islanders vehemently fought against the fee then, and we know they will do so again. It

is unwarranted and unwanted,” Murray continued. “This is just another of a long list of taxes and fees being imposed on New Yorkers and in this case, clearly targeting Long Islanders.”

The senators noted that the claim that this revenue will go toward enhancing support of the recreational fishing industry is hollow since there have been no calls for help from the fishing community. In fact, a DEC spokesman had described the

recreational fishing industry as being "robust.”

Democrat Senator Monica Martinez, who was not a signatory to the Hochul letter, said, “I am in opposition to imposing fees on anglers unless anglers approve this initiative and revenue is utilized appropriately to improve fishing access and environmental initiatives. The economic and recreational role of fishing on Long Island cannot be understated, and creating barriers to entry will undermine such unless revenue is allocated appropriately."

Long Island’s other Democrat senator, Kevin Thomas, did not respond to requests for his position on the issue.

“A saltwater fishing license?

What a ridiculous idea,” said Victor Lagattolla of Ridge, who was wetting a line recently at Brooklyn Dock in Center Moriches. “We’re tired of sending our tax money to Albany only to be handed down restrictions on what we can catch.” The angler noted that the number of fish you’re allowed to keep “hardly makes it worth it.”

LaLota's "15 Huge Wins" for Suffolk County: Closer Examination Reveals Complex Reality

Representative Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County) from New York's First Congressional District has garnered attention with his recent proclamation of "15 Huge Wins for Suffolk County" in the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill. While the Congressman's statement may sound promising, a deeper dive into the bill's details reveals a more complex and nuanced reality.

The Interior and Environment Appropriations bill underwent rigorous scrutiny in the GOPcontrolled House. After several days of intense debate and over 100 proposed amendments, the bill narrowly passed with a vote of 213 in favor and 203 against it. It is essential to note that the overall funding allocated by the bill represents a 35 percent reduction compared to the fiscal 2023 level, a significant cut that cannot be overlooked.

Don’t Follow the “Leader”: A Lesson in Hypocrisy and Salvation

By Howard Roark During times of chaos and uncertainty we all must find our own personal anchor to windward. What is the force that keeps you from spiraling into the abyss and being dragged down by the forces of evil that are seemingly everywhere? It is difficult to look at what is happening in the world around us and not feel a sense of anger, confusion, and loss. What is our anchor to windward? For many of us it is our family and friends.

What has made the last several years so uniquely difficult is that, in many cases, our family and friends have been divided across some ideological line and the anger and division has eroded our traditional sanctuaries.

For others of us, we find our anchor in the words of the Bible.

This Sunday’s gospel serves as a powerful reminder of where our focus needs to be during times like these. Matthew 23 says: Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be

careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

“Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

This scripture reminds us of

two important ideas. First, our “leaders” are human and bring with them all forms of human failure and sin. They often do not practice what they preach, and we should not follow them blindly. Secondly, we are all responsible and accountable for our own actions. Core principles of kindness, courage, honor, truth and justice seem to be

eroding all around us. But we do not need to participate in that downward spiral. We can choose to be kind. We can choose truth.

We can choose courage to maintain these principles even when the world around us insists we abandon them. This is the part we can all play to right the ship.

Those who humble themselves will be exalted. As we enter an important election week we hope our elected “leaders” find the courage and wisdom to follow these words. But when they inevitably do not, we must all have the courage and wisdom to not follow them down that path.

Ukraine Peace Talks Sought Amid Stalemate

By Robert Chartuk In his 1961 Farewell Address, President Eisenhower warned of the establishment of a “MilitaryIndustrial Complex” that would feed itself through the incitement of wars across the globe. Viewing his comment through the lens of history, the man who helped lead the United States to victory in World War II was right: since the World War ended in 1945, America has engaged in a steady stream of conflicts: Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria–and now Ukraine and the growing prospect of war in the Middle East.

When Russian President Vladamir Putin crossed his military into the Russian-speaking portions of Ukraine in February, the United States rallied around its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and vowed to beat back the assault on Democracy. Public sentiment hailed him as a hero fighting back against his communist foe, and he was showered with billions in U.S.

taxpayer dollars. As long as the money flowed, the nations would be at war.

With the prospect of a new military outlet stemming from the Hamas attack on Israel, the complex may be moving on. Biden administration and European officials are quietly talking to the Ukrainian government about peace negotiations with Russia.

In fiery speeches to Congress and worldwide jet-setting to galvanize international support, Zelenskyy not only called for Putin to withdraw from his latest excursion but also forcing him to give up land he took in Crimea under Obama and try him as a war criminal. The Biden administration fanned the flames by recommending Ukraine to NATO, a line in the sand Putin promised he would not allow to be crossed.

A promised “Spring Offensive” against Russia failed despite billions in war assistance, as thousands of Ukrainians continue to be slaughtered at the front. In light

of the backdoor U.S. entreaties, Zelenskyy plucked a familiar tactic from the world playbook, inviting Donald Trump to his embattled nation to show him why, in just “24 minutes,” peace cannot be made.

The former president has ridiculed the conflict, stating that Putin would never have invaded if he was in the Oval Office and that he could bring both sides together for a settlement in 24 hours, primarily by cutting the money supply. As it stands, Putin believes he can “wait out the West.”

With a growing prospect of increased military involvement across the globe, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin infamously stated that the U.S. could indeed afford wars on all the various fronts, including a possible conflict with China, which is flexing its military might for a takeover of Taiwan. Under Biden, the nation’s national debt has soared to $33.7 trillion, a number that the new speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, says is the top threat to America’s

security. Indeed, to cover $160 billion in new spending that he proposes, Biden would have to print more money and risk driving up inflation even higher or borrow it from countries such as China, which is already trying to unload U.S. promissory notes. To great derision from the Democrats, Johnson has tied any future military funding to cuts in domestic spending, particularly on the IRS, which Biden is infusing with billions to help extract even more from the American taxpayers.

U.S. military supplies to Ukraine have depleted stockpiles, leaving analysts to fear that if China did escalate its activities in the South China Sea, the U.S. response could be less than robust. A solution is music to the ears of the industrial complex: the production of more weapons.

Zelenskyy may be well advised to seek an exit strategy amid reports that he is struggling with recruitment and is facing public

protests about his conscription requirements. Neither army is making strides on the battlefield, which some U.S. officials are now describing as a war of inches.

Reports have Ukraine lasting only to the end of the year. “Any decisions about negotiations are up to Ukraine,” the National Security Council said in a statement. “We are focused on continuing to stand strongly in support of Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence against Russian aggression.”

In the meantime, the toll of war continues to ratchet up, fueled by the $75 billion that has been sent overseas so far, with more expected to follow. Ukraine has reported 70,000 casualties among its military ranks, and 27,000 civilians have been killed or injured. Once the war is over, the rebuilding effort will reach into the trillions as U.S. taxpayers will be asked to pay for the rebuilding of the Ukraine infrastructure and cover the pensions and medical needs of its populace.

Israel Prepares to Root Out Hamas

By Robert Chartuk In response to the worst slaughter of Jewish people since the Holocaust, the Israel Defense Force has the Gaza Strip surrounded in preparation for its military campaign to root out the Hamas terrorists that have ruled the controversial territory since 2007.

The Middle East has been in turmoil since Oct. 7 when the militant group crossed into Israel by air, land, and sea in a coordinated attack that saw thousands, including babies and teenagers at a peace concert, tortured, raped, and killed. The terrorists filmed their atrocities for the greatest effect, and their actions have galvanized the world into two camps: one horrified by the viciousness of the attacks and another in support of the Palestinians against the Jewish state they say have abused the Muslims for years.

Every action by either side is dissected and criticized the world over, and information has proven to be unreliable in the fog of the impending war. Pro-Palestinian protestors railed against a reported bomb attack on a Gaza hospital until it was revealed that it was a Hamas missile that had gone awry and had only landed in the facility's parking lot. Israeli hits on refugee camps at Al-Maghazi and Jabalia killed civilians, with the Israelis arguing that they are fronts for miles of underground tunnels where Hamas leaders have set up operations and are using Palestinians as human shields.

Both sides of the debate wonder how Israel's intelligence and the vast U.S. network were caught so unprepared for the October assault.

Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu has joined with a former opponent to form a war party government that has vowed to totally eliminate Hamas rule in Gaza, while the Muslim Brotherhood, the parent organization of the militant group, has vowed to exterminate Jews not only in Israel but throughout the world. The threats have left many worrying that another attack of the magnitude of 911 could occur, especially with an open U.S. border that could allow Jihadists to connect with sleeper cells that analysts believe have already been established in this country.

President Biden has given mixed signals in his support of Israel calling for a pause in their strikes on Gaza, a move detractors argue will give the militants time to strengthen their defenses. Netanyahu has not called for U.S. military support as the administration focuses on humanitarian assistance and the safe return of hundreds of hostages.

On Capitol Hill, debate has begun over the nation's willingness to take in Palestinian refugees. As Israel escalates its retribution, hundreds of thousands of Gazans have no place to go as surrounding countries, including Egypt bordering to the north, refuse to take them in. Criticism has been directed at Biden for playing both sides by funneling money to Hamas and to Iran, the region's most aggressive sponsor of terrorism.

The house's new speaker, Mike Johnson, roiled the Democrats by tying $14.5 billion in aid to Israel to cuts in the billions they allocated to the IRS to step up audits and tax enforcement here at home. Next on the agenda is a Biden request for

Israeli army armored personnel carrier on the way to the Gaza Strip during fighting between Israel and Hamas.

$106 billion more for the conflict, as well as to support Ukraine and fund the processing of illegal immigrants. Johnson's approach of requiring cuts in other parts of the federal budget to offset new Biden spending is paying off politically, with 16 Democrats joining in to approve the Israel funds.

Other terrorist groups in the region are taking advantage of the Gaza situation in attacks seen as furthering the destabilization of the Middle East. Iranian-backed militias have intensified rocket and drone strikes on U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria, drawing at least one retaliatory hit from American forces. A drone attack against a U.S. site in Syria was the 32nd on U.S. and coalition military forces in Iraq and Syria since Oct. 17, and, to date, there have been at least 17 attacks in Iraq and 15 in Syria. At least 21 service members have been injured by the strafing, according to the Pentagon.

Pro-Palestinian sentiment has been making it increasingly unsafe for supporters of Israel.

Jewish students at Cooper Union in Manhattan's East Village had to be locked inside the library while Pro-Palestine protesters banged on the windows and doors. At Cornell, a student was arrested after threatening to kill the college's Jewish students and "shoot up" the university's kosher dining hall. Demonstrators shut down the Brooklyn Bridge in a massive anti-Israel rally, while the New York Police Department warned Jews to stay home during their recognition of the Shabbos day of rest. Thousands descended on Washington for a rally chanting, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," a mantra seen as a call to attack Jews. The protestors wore black and white keffiyehs, a traditional scarf of Middle Eastern men, as an enormous Palestinian flag was unfurled along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Those in the anti-Israel camp blame its leaders for the horrific conditions in Gaza, a land that was ceded to the Palestinians in 1994 as part of the Oslo Accords.

Hamas took governing control of the strip and its 2.3 million people and fell under criticism for militant activities that funneled foreign aid to combat rather than taking care of the population. Israel, the target of frequent missile launches from Gaza, has been blamed for controlling the resources of the strip and contributing to the poverty of the inhabitants. A Gaza free of militant rule, many argue, will allow it to flourish just as Israel has with its diverse population.

The Biden administration, with a war in Ukraine, China flexing its military muscle, and the Middle East erupting in conflict, dispatched Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Iraq for a meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad. He's also made trips to Israel, Turkey, and Jordan and had a sit-down with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank in frenetic efforts to bring peace to the region.

At home, protestors are disrupting Congress, where pledges to support the country's long-time ally, Israel, are countered by representatives firmly on the Palestinian side. In a country suffering from the worst inflation in generations, crime waves sweeping across major cities, millions of illegal migrants streaming across the border, and an unfathomable $33.7 trillion national debt, many fear the Middle East turmoil will be the final straw that sends America into a crippling economic recession.

By Nick Cipolla Instead of talking about the struggling Stony Brook Football team, the South Shore Press would like to congratulate Stony Brook Baseball legend and member of their legendary 2012 team that made it to the College World Series Travis Jankowski on helping the Texas Rangers win the 2023 World Series.

The Rangers would win the World Series last week against the underdog Arizona Diamondbacks as the Arlington-based team took the Series in five games.

The former first round pick was a late addition to the World Series Roster as he was added when both Max Scherzer and Adolis Garcia were injured in Game 3 in Arizona.

The milestones didn’t stop there as the 32 year old from Lancaster, Pennsylvania impressed everyone in Game 4 as he went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, helping the Rangers win the game by a score of 11-7.

“To me, someone's gotta step up, right?” Jankowski said in a postgame interview with MLB Network following his performance in the World Series. “There's no replacing Adolis, especially what he has done in the postseason run. I got the news at 2 p.m. before the game, but I was ready to go 15 years ago and it's one of those things you try to step up and enjoy the moment.”

This past offseason, the Rangers decided to take a chance on Jankowski and it certainly paid off for both parties as the franchise won its first ever World Series and Jankowski now enters free agency again with a chance to catch on with either the Rangers or another MLB team in 2024.

"Throughout all the ups and downs during Travis's collegiate and professional career,” Head Coach Matt Senk said in a Press Release by Stony Brook Athletics. “he has always spoken deeply and fondly about what Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Athletics and Stony Brook Baseball has meant to him.”

Following the World Series victory, Jankowski became the only Seawolf to ever be a member of a team that won a major United States pro sports title (the NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, the World Series, and the Stanley Cup are considered the four major championships).

Upset Alert: Smithtown West Girls Soccer Wins Long Island Championship 1-0 over Juggernaut South Side

The 2023 Smithtown West Girls Soccer team has cemented their place in history this past weekend as they knocked off Nassau County Champion South Side High School by a score of 1-0.

“I saw the open shot and I had to take it,” DeMaio said to Newsday following the victory. “I knew once I hit it, it was going in. I knew I needed to get it done. If there was going to be a goal, that was going to be it.”

The Bulls finally are able to get over the hump this year as the last two seasons saw them lose in the late stages of the playoffs to the eventual New York State Champions in the last two seasons as they lost to Ward Melville in 2021 via Penalty Kicks and to the Massapequa Chiefs in 2022 in the Long Island Championship in a 2-1 game.

The Bulls have not been to the State Final Four since 2018 when the team made an unprecedented run to the final four where they lost to Monroe-Woodbury by a score of 1-0.

Although he has not been in the Seawolf red and navy in over a decade, Jankowski continues to make an impact on the Stony Brook Baseball program as he has become an inspiration to many. He is the perfect example of a pro athlete can come from anywhere, if you work hard enough, the scouts will find you.

The lone goal of the game was scored by senior Madison DeMaio who took centerstage when the lights were brightest.

American Hockey Player Dies Overseas from “Accidental” Throat Slashing

By Nick Cipolla A former NHL Hockey player recently died overseas while playing in the United Kingdom due to what many have called a “Freak Accident”.

Adam Johnson – who originally is from a small town in Minnesota – was playing for the UK’s Nottingham Panthers in a match against the Sheffield Steelers when he met his unfortunate demise.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Panthers organization said that they were "truly devastated" to announce that Johnson had died following the "freak accident."

Jankowski was a first round pick following his historic 2012 season where he led the nation in triples and helped get the longshot Seawolves to Omaha as they beat LSU in the Super Regional.

Since being drafted in the first round, Jankowski has bounced around quite a bit as he started his

You’re thinking about him and his family, that’s a tragedy," Blackhawks Rookie Sensation Connor Bedard said to the media about the passing of Johnson. “The hockey community is so tight and such a small world. ... Many people from family members and active professional hockey players reacted to the news on social media or spoke to the media about it after the reports came out.

According to initial reports Johnson died from a freak accident when a blade from an opposing player's skate slashed an important vein in his throat, leaving him to bleed out and die a painful death that has been considered a freak thing that almost never happens in the sport of Hockey.

The player who hit Johnson is none other than Matt Pergrave, a player who has built a reputation as a dirty player during his professional career.

During his time in the Elite Ice Hockey League – or EIHL for short – Pergrave has racked up the most penalty minutes during the 2022-2023 season while also getting ejected from multiple games due to his reckless and dangerous play.

Recently, another video has surfaced on X of Pergrave doing a similar move in a game years earlier in an effort to severely injure a player.

The Blue Devils beat West Genesee High School to make the Championship Tournament Tompkins Cortland Community College on Saturday at 12 p.m. It’s Smithtown West’s first trip to the state semifinals since 2018 as the program chases its first state title.

An inquest into the 29-year-old American’s death was opened and adjourned until January 26, 2024 after a brief hearing at Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre on Friday, November 3.

Antaky, Macchia Highlight Victories at Section XI Cross Country Championships

By Nick Cipolla With state championships on the horizon, the very best in Suffolk County gathered at Sunken Meadow State Park one last time this year for the Section XI State Qualifier Meet to see who will move on and compete at the state championship at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School this upcoming weekend.

On the boys side, there weren’t too many surprises in the individual race as Douglas Antaky won the Class A individual championship with ease as he ran 16:09 over the grueling Sunken Meadow 5000 meter course. He was over 11 seconds clear of second place and he will head upstate with an undefeated record in 2023.

Ward Melville senior Brian Liebowitz would secure his spot as one of the individuals in Class A to make the state meet as he ran 16:30 over the 5000 meter distance to place fourth overall.

The big surprise in the men’s race is Commack High School – who lacks a traditional front of the pack superstar – came away with the team county title over Smithtown and Eastport-South Manor with a score of 64 points.

In the boys Class B race, Rocky Point Sophomore Trevor Green pulled off a huge upset over the favorite Jess-Joe Augustine of Mount Sinai as he ran a blistering 16:31 to take home the win.

Augustine would still make it to the state meet as an individual as he placed third overall. Joining them will be Westhampton Beach Senior Trevor Hayes who finished inside the top 5 individuals.

In the boys Class C race, it was all Port Jefferson as they nearly had a perfect score of 15 as they had their top 5 runners place first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth overall.

Junior Colin Veit cruised to victory as he made it to the finish line with a time of 17:14 over the 5000m distance.

Behind him was Max Joyner, Andrew Schretzmayer, Carman Stanton, and

Christopher Nam. The girls Class A race saw William Floyd’s Superstar Athlete Zariel Macchia walk away with the victory as she completed the difficult 5000m course in a blistering 18:42. Macchia seemed to use this as a tune-up race as she looks to defend her Class A State Championship this upcoming weekend.

Behind Macchia, Bellport Junior Ella Masem had a big day as she would place second with a time of 19:12 and secured her spot as an individual at the State Championship meet. Ward Melville’s Anna Probst and Comsewogue’s Madison Cole also made the Bus to VVS High School for the State Meet as they rounded out the individual Qualifiers for the State Championship.

Despite Macchia’s predictable victory, she would not own the fastest time of day as she was outdone by BayportBlue Point’s Sophia McInnes who ran away with the Class B Victory with an incredible time of 18:20 over the 5000m course at Sunken Meadow.

Mount Sinai 8th grader Cali Gabrielson was the runner up and also ran under the 19 minute threshold, an insanely good time for any female runner, especially a girl who has yet to enter her freshman year of High School. Senior Paige Sheiffele will be joining Gabrielson on the trip to the State Meet with a 4th place finish.

Westhampton Beach will also send three individuals as Lily Striebel, Fina DiBasso and Caeden Dorn will also qualify for the State Championship as they were inside the top 5 individual finishers.

In the Class C Race, Center Moriches Sophomore Emma Gold would finish runner up and make it to the State Championship as an individual. Her teammate – and another 8th grader – Claire Castiglione will both make it to the State Meet as Individuals.

Port Jefferson Junior Gwen Connelly will also make the meet as an Individual as she placed 4th overall in the race.

In a rematch of the Longwood Homecoming game, the Lions offensive line dominated the front lines as they controlled the line of scrimmage and advanced to the Division I Semi-Finals.

Nnamdi Nwanyanwu ran for 234 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries to lead host No. 4 Longwood over No. 5 Commack.

Caleib Corbett added two TD runs and Davien Benjamin-Sheffey rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries. Longwood totaled 381 rushing yards behind the offensive line of Michael Duarte, Ryan Morrissey, Greg Princivil, Clint Chichester, Jordan Bennett and Edmond Anderson.

William Floyd: 52 Sachem East: 26

The Colonials (number one seed in Division I) dominated from the opening kickoff as it was an offensive explosion from the opening kickoff.

The top seed will take on rival Longwood in the Division I Semi-Finals.

Ward Melville: 14 Lindenhurst: 10

After a 13-yard touchdown pass to Sebastian Jolley that gave his team a lead earlier in the game, Ethan Burgos would rush for the winning 16-yard touchdown with 10 minutes left to lead Ward Melville over Lindenhurst.

Burgos added 14 carries for 92 yards to lead the Patriots over the Bulldogs.

Sachem North: 42 Walt Whitman: 10

Lucas Singleton rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries to lead host No. 2 Sachem North over No. 7 Walt Whitman. His 80-yard TD run gave Sachem North (7-2) a 1410 lead in the second quarter.

The Case for Yamamoto

The rumor mill didn't even wait for the World Series to end before it started to go into hyperdrive for the coming major league baseball offseason, and at the center of the rumors stand the New York Yankeees.

Reports have come out that the Padres are in desperate financial times and that led directly to Juan Soto's name being bandied about. Soto will likely cost $500 million plus, and with the Padres not able to afford him, all eyes now are looking to Brian Cashman and pinstripes. This Soto news could only be minimized by the Otani destination, which will make the slugger the head of a free agent class that most believe the Yanks will have a heavy hand in. Throw in names like Bellinger and Snell and you can see why the rumor mill is so active already.

The one name that continues

tio bubble to the surface for the Yankees, fans may not know much about. Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Despite fans not knowing his career intimately, Brian Cashman knows more than most, after he took a trip to watch him play during this past season.

Yamamoto is everything you would want in a front line starter. He is a 25-yearold pitcher with a stat line that is nearly unbelievable and a pitching arsenal just as impressive. In his seven years in Japan he threw nearly 1,000 innings. Over those innings he put up a mind bending 1.72 ERA. Yamamoto strikes out more than a batter per inning, walks only two per nine and keeps the ball in the park with a 0.3 HR/9 split. What is even crazier about this is he seems to be getting better. His 2023 numbers of a 1.16 ERA are

impressive enough, but he also lowered his walk and home run rates, while increasing his strikeouts per nine.

He is a five pitch pitcher who also goes deep into games. He wants the ball and wants to be out there, something that is increasingly rare in today's game, but the same mentality that Gerrit Cole brings to work every time he takes the bump.

Yamamoto also has not had any injuries at this point in his career, which is also seemingly a dying trait among young pitchers.

In short, Yamamoto seems like the perfect fit for this Yankees team. New York has always been aggressive in the international market and this is a no brainer for them.

Fans will argue if hitting or pitching is the bigger need, but no fans will argue that getting a 25-year-old, with

Any school child knows, or at least believes, a terrible storm or other natural phenomena that causes damage to your property, or, causes your property (your boat) to damage someone else’s (another boat), is an Act of God. Behind this “fact” lies protection for the insurance company that may, or may not, have to pay (check the fine print and be sure of what you are paying for) or for you when your boat sets down on someone else’s during a storm and sinks it.

Or, does it? What are the facts?

The 4-Day Nor’easter of ‘05

Some of you may recall the severe nor’easter we had in the late fall of ’05. I do in particular because my son and I moor our boats in a bite of water east of Gunning Point, along with about a dozen other boaters. During that storm, two of those dozen boats broke loose from their ground tackle. One, my son’s, ended up about 300 yards to windward, way up in a marsh. The other, my neighbor’s (“Joe”), set down on my boat in the storm and sank it. His boat ended up against my dock and sustained considerable damage, just from being banged up against the bollards. After two days of mourning, I said to myself, “Hey, it’s

He came over to the house, hat and checkbook in hand, and offered to pay for the damages. “Joe, don’t be silly. It was an Act of God. No one’s fault. For cripes’ sake, the wind blew for 4 days straight! Go home.”

And, after many, many attempts at redressing what he felt was his fault, he went home*.

What Actually Is an Act of God?

An Act of God from a layman’s point of view is any natural act caused without human intervention – hurricane, tornado, earthquake, lightning, etc. From a legal point of view, it is the same.

However, to seek a defense as an Act of God, there is a second test. There must be no negligent behavior by, for example, the vessel owner that contributed to the accident. There is a presumption of fault under the law, from the start, that a vessel adrift is adrift due to negligence so it is a difficult “beat to windward”

You won’t be surprised to know that the judge, despite several arguments by the marina owner that the vessel could have or should have taken further precautions, ruled in favor of “Trust Me II”’s owner that the facts met the legal test of an Act of God.

Q: A:

My mom has been a recipient of Community Medicaid. As her condition is deteriorating it is clear that she will need long-term care in a nursing facility. I have heard that Community Medicaid will pay for the nursing facility. Is that correct?

No, Community Medicaid will not pay for long termcare in a nursing home. Community Medicaid is the program that covers care at home, such as a personal care aide.

Chronic Medicaid is the program that covers nursing home care.

The requirements and application process for Community and Chronic Medicaid are very different. An applicant's marital status implicates a different set of rules. It is important to know the differences and make sure you have the correct Medicaid in effect.

For 2023, an individual applying for Community Medicaid can have no more than $30,182 in assets, excluding the home if the equity is less than $1,033,000. Qualified funds such as IRAs or 401(K)s are exempt, so long as the applicant is taking minimum distributions, and which are counted towards the monthly income allowance. The applicant's income cannot exceed $1,677 per month - but there are

ways to capture the income using a Pooled Income Trust. While these limitations may seem daunting, the good news about Community Medicaid is that there currently is no look-back period. No look-back means someone looking to get care at home can transfer assets out of their name and be eligible the following month.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that in April of 2020 New York State passed a law introducing a 30-month look-back period for Community Medicaid. The lookback period was originally set to take effect in October 2020, but was delayed. The New York State Department of Health recently announced that the earliest the 30-month look-back period will be implemented, if ever, is mid to late 2025.

To qualify for Chronic Medicaid in 2023 an individual applicant can have no more than $30,182 in assets, and no more than $50.00 per month in income. There is no pooled trust option to protect excess
